Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Obadiah (Hindi)
This glossary catalogs every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across the whole book (Obadiah 1:1–21). Terms already established in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked [REUSED] and MUST be rendered exactly as recorded there. New terms introduced by Obadiah are marked [NEW] and are proposed for addition to translation memory at the version increment following this Phase 1 run.
| # | Term (English gloss) | Original (Hebrew) | Transliteration | Hindi Rendering | Doctrine | Risk | TM Status | Notes / Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Day of the LORD | יוֹם־יְהוָה | yôm-YHWH | यहोवा का दिन | Day of the Lord for All Nations | Critical | [NEW] | Single highest-stakes term in the book. Must use यहोवा (covenant name), never प्रभु. Established BSI OV/NV OT convention (cf. Amos 5:18, Joel). Theologian review every occurrence. |
| 2 | LORD (YHWH, covenant name) | יְהוָה | YHWH | यहोवा | (foundational, all doctrines) | Critical | [NEW] | Governs all four occurrences in the book (1:1,4,8,15,18,21 and implicitly throughout). Distinct from baseline lord entry (प्रभु, for κύριος); pair the two terms with an explicit cross-reference note so translators do not collapse OT יְהוָה into NT קύριος vocabulary without comment. |
| 3 | Lord GOD (Adonai YHWH) | אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה | ʾAdōnāy YHWH | प्रभु यहोवा | Day of the Lord / foundational | Critical | [NEW] | Combined sovereign-title + covenant-name; never collapse to a single word (1:1). |
| 4 | Kingdom shall be the LORD’s | וְהָיְתָה לַיהוָה הַמְּלוּכָה | wehāyetâh laYHWH hammelûkâh | राज्य यहोवा का होगा | The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | Critical | [NEW] | The book’s climax (1:21). Ties to baseline kingdom_of_god (परमेश्वर का राज्य) as the same ultimate sovereignty in later canonical stage; theologian note required explaining OT/NT continuity without conflating the two surface forms. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 5 | Saviors / deliverers | מוֹשִׁעִים | môshiʿîm | उद्धारकर्ता | The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | Critical | [NEW] | Built on baseline salvation root (उद्धार, Critical, NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष). Plural human deliverers (Judges-type figures) — mandatory translator note distinguishing from Christ’s unique, singular saving work in the NT. |
| 6 | Vision (prophetic superscription) | חָזוֹן | chazôn | दर्शन | Foundational / Inspiration of Scripture | High | [NEW — flagged] | Established Hindi convention for prophetic-book titles (cf. यशायाह का दर्शन), yet दर्शन was explicitly rejected in the Galatians baseline for ἀποκάλυψις (revelation) due to Hindu devotional-sight (darshan) connotation. Retain दर्शन here as the fixed literary-genre title term, but attach a mandatory translator note distinguishing this technical superscription usage from a devotee’s self-attained mystical sight — Obadiah receives, not attains, this vision from a personal, sovereign God. Theologian review required. |
| 7 | Pride (of heart) | זְדוֹן לִבְּךָ | zedôn libbekhā | मन का घमण्ड | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | High | [REUSED root] | Extends baseline boasting (घमण्ड, established for Romans 3:27 καυχάομαι) to a related but distinct Hebrew pride/arrogance term. Central to the doctrine title; theologian review recommended. |
| 8 | Eagle | נֶשֶׁר | nesher | उकाब | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | High | [NEW] | MUST NOT use गरुड़ — the mythological eagle-vehicle of Vishnu in Hindu tradition. उकाब is the neutral established Hindi term for a large raptor and avoids this collision. |
| 9 | Violence | חָמָס | chamas | हिंसा | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | High | [NEW] | Standard, non-syncretic Hindi term (contrast with अहिंसा is culturally well understood and poses no risk here). Must not be softened to संघर्ष/झगड़ा. Carries the full weight of the doctrine title. |
| 10 | Brother (Jacob/Esau kinship) | אָח / אָחִיךָ | ʾāch / ʾāchîkhā | भाई | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | Critical | [NEW] | Must remain literal kinship language (1:10,12) — the oracle’s moral force depends on Edom’s violence being against a literal brother-nation, not a generic foreign enemy. Never generalize to “neighbor” or “another people.” |
| 11 | Gloated / rejoiced (over a brother’s ruin) | שָׂמַחְתָּ | sāmachtā | आनन्दित हुआ / हँसा (culpable sense) | Judgment on Pride and Violence / God’s Justice for the Oppressed | Medium | [NEW] | Must carry the negative, culpable schadenfreude sense; distinguish from ordinary आनन्द (joy) elsewhere used positively in this Language Package. |
| 12 | Nations (hostile, under judgment) | גּוֹיִם | gôyim | राष्ट्र | Day of the Lord for All Nations | High | [NEW — cf. REUSED pattern] | Distinct from baseline gentiles (अन्यजाति, reserved for Jew/Gentile unity doctrine). Here denotes the nations collectively as objects of universal judgment; keep unqualified and universal in scope (1:15-16). |
| 13 | Recompense / reward (returned on one’s own head) | גְּמֻלְךָ | gemulkhā | तेरा फल/बदला | Day of the Lord for All Nations | Medium | [NEW] | Just divine recompense, proportionate (lex talionis), not personal vengeance — pairs conceptually with baseline wrath_of_god note distinguishing क्रोध from बदला (revenge). |
| 14 | Holy mountain (Zion) | הַר קָדְשִׁי | har qodshî | मेरा पवित्र पर्वत | Day of the Lord / God’s Justice for the Oppressed | High | [REUSED] | Reuses baseline holy (पवित्र) exactly. Zion as God’s own sanctuary-mountain, desecrated by Edom’s triumphalism (1:16). |
| 15 | Mount Zion (proper name) | הַר־צִיּוֹן | Har Tzîyôn | सिय्योन पर्वत | God’s Justice for the Oppressed / Kingdom | Low | [NEW] | Established Hindi Bible proper name; low risk. |
| 16 | Deliverance / escaped remnant | פְּלֵיטָה | peleitâh | बचे हुए लोग | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | High | [REUSED] | Reuses baseline remnant entry exactly (established for Romans 9:27; 11:5) — grace-preserved, not self-achieved. |
| 17 | Survivor (antonym of remnant, applied to Edom) | שָׂרִיד | sārîd | कोई भी शेष न रहेगा (नहीं) | Judgment on Pride and Violence / Day of the Lord | High | [NEW] | Deliberate antonym-contrast with #16; keep visible so the total-judgment/total-preservation contrast (1:17-18) is not flattened. |
| 18 | Possess / inheritance (territorial) | יָרַש / מוֹרָשָׁה | yārash / môrāshâh | अधिकार में लेना / मीरास | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | Medium | [NEW] | Literal, territorial land-possession; must be kept distinct from the Galatians baseline’s spiritual-inheritance terms (वारिस, प्रतिज्ञा) so readers do not conflate Israel’s land-restoration with NT spiritual inheritance. |
| 19 | Exile / captivity | גָּלוּת | gālût | बँधुआई | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | Medium | [NEW] | Standard established Hindi OT term; covenant-curse-and-restoration background (Deuteronomy 28-30). |
| 20 | Cut off forever | נִכְרַת לְעוֹלָם | nikhrat le-ʿôlām | सर्वदा के लिए मिटा दिया जाएगा | Judgment on Pride and Violence | High | [NEW] | Total, irrevocable judgment language; sets up the remnant/no-remnant contrast (#16, #17). |
| 21 | Covenant / treaty allies | בְּרִית (in political-alliance sense) | berît | वाचा/संधि | Judgment on Pride and Violence (betrayal by allies) | Medium | [REUSED, disambiguated] | TM-consistent with baseline covenant (वाचा), used here in the ordinary political-alliance sense rather than the Abrahamic/Davidic theological sense; light disambiguating note recommended. |
| 22 | Wise men (of Edom) | חַכְמֵי אֱדוֹם | chakhmê ʾEdôm | बुद्धिमान लोग | Judgment on Pride and Violence | Low | [NEW] | Edom’s proverbial wisdom (cf. Job 2:11); stripped away as part of judgment (1:8). |
| 23 | Mighty men / warriors | גִּבּוֹרִים | gibbôrîm | वीर/शूरवीर | Judgment on Pride and Violence | Low-Medium | [NEW] | Military elite dismayed in judgment (1:9). |
| 24 | Day of calamity | יוֹם אֵידוֹ | yôm ʾêdô | विपत्ति/अनर्थ का दिन | Day of the Lord / God’s Justice for the Oppressed | Medium | [NEW] | Distinct from but semantically adjacent to יוֹם־יְהוָה (#1); keep the two visibly related without collapsing into one phrase. |
| 25 | Crossroads / mountain pass (ambush site) | פֶּרֶק | pereq | चौराहा/घाटी का मुहाना | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | Low-Medium | [NEW] | Concrete ambush imagery (1:14); intelligible in Indian hill-terrain context, no special syncretism risk. |
| 26 | As though they had not been (totality idiom) | הָיוּ כְּלוֹא הָיוּ | hāyû keloʾ hāyû | जैसे वे कभी थे ही नहीं | Day of the Lord for All Nations | Medium | [NEW] | Idiom of total annihilation of the nations under judgment; keep as complete negation, not softened to “diminished” or “weakened.” |
| 27 | Jacob (house of) | בֵּית יַעֲקֹב | Bêt Yaʿaqôv | याकूब का घराना | God’s Justice for the Oppressed / Kingdom | Low | [NEW] | Established Hindi proper name (याकूब); “house of” formula standard. |
| 28 | Esau (house of / mount of) | בֵּית עֵשָׂו / הַר עֵשָׂו | Bêt/Har ʿÊsāv | एसाव का घराना / एसाव का पहाड़ी देश | All four doctrines (Edom = descendants of Esau) | Low | [NEW] | Established proper name; theological identity as Jacob’s twin brother (Genesis 25) is load-bearing context, not merely a place-name — see #10. |
| 29 | Joseph (house of) | בֵּית יוֹסֵף | Bêt Yôsêf | यूसुफ का घराना | Judgment on Pride and Violence (v. 18 fire imagery) | Low | [NEW] | Established proper name. |
| 30 | Edom (nation) | אֱדוֹם | ʾEdôm | एदोम | All four doctrines | Low | [NEW] | Established Hindi Bible proper name for the nation descended from Esau. |
| 31 | Drink (the cup of judgment) | שָׁתָה / לָעָה | shātâh / lāʿâh | पीना / निगल जाना | Day of the Lord for All Nations | Medium | [NEW] | Stock prophetic idiom (cup of judgment, cf. Jeremiah 25; Isaiah 51:17); brief translator gloss recommended so the judicial metaphor is not lost on readers unfamiliar with the convention. |
| 32 | Geographic/tribal proper names (Negev, Shephelah, Philistines, Ephraim, Samaria, Benjamin, Gilead, Canaanites, Zarephath, Sepharad, Teman) | הַנֶּגֶב, הַשְּׁפֵלָה, פְּלִשְׁתִּים, אֶפְרַיִם, שֹׁמְרוֹן, בִּנְיָמִין, גִּלְעָד, כְּנַעֲנִים, צָרְפַת, סְפָרַד, תֵּימָן | (various) | नेगेव, शपेला, पलिश्ती, इफ्राईम, शमरोन, बिन्यामीन, गिलाद, कनानी, सारफत, सफारद, तेमान | God’s Justice for the Oppressed (restoration geography) | Low | [NEW] | Established Hindi Bible geographic forms; consistency check against BSI OV recommended but no doctrinal risk. |

Key Cross-Cutting Notes for Phase 2
- यहोवा vs. प्रभु: Obadiah requires the OT covenant-name transliteration यहोवा throughout, kept distinct from (but explicitly cross-referenced to) the baseline lord (प्रभु) and kingdom_of_god (परमेश्वर का राज्य) entries. This is the book’s central translation-memory extension.
- उद्धारकर्ता (deliverers, 1:21) must never be allowed to imply competing saviors alongside Christ’s unique उद्धार; mandatory note on every occurrence.
- भाई (brother, 1:10,12) must remain literal kinship language; this is the moral hinge of the entire indictment against Edom.
- उकाब, not गरुड़, for “eagle” (1:4) — a Hindu-deity-vehicle collision unique to this book, not previously encountered in the Romans/Galatians baseline.
- बचे हुए लोग / शेष न रहेगा (remnant / no-survivor) contrast (1:17-18) must be preserved as a deliberate antonym pair.
- दर्शन for the book’s superscription (1:1) reopens, in a narrower and different sense, a term the Galatians baseline flagged as forbidden for revelation/apokalypsis — theologian adjudication is required to confirm the superscription usage is safe and to draft the distinguishing note.
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
[Inherited from Romans package.] Established term. In Romans 10:9 the confession ‘Jesus is Lord’ = यीशु प्रभु है. Must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship; add context notes distinguishing from Hindu deity usage. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: प्रभु is the translated half of the compound title प्रभु यहोवा (1:1) and must never be substituted for, or used interchangeably with, यहोवा (the covenant name) elsewhere in this book — see yhwh_covenant_name below.
Salvation
Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा
[Inherited from Romans package.] CRITICAL: NEVER use मुक्ति or मोक्ष — these carry Hindu liberation from samsara meaning. उद्धार = deliverance by God through Christ. छुटकारा may be used for ‘redemption’ in specific contexts. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: this is the root of साविors_deliverers (उद्धारकर्ता, 1:21); the Critical-tier prohibition on मुक्ति/मोक्ष extends automatically to that derived term.
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान
[Inherited from Romans package.] परमेश्वर (Supreme Lord) is the BSI OV standard. ईश्वर is used in some contexts; both are acceptable but परमेश्वर is preferred for doctrinal precision. भगवान has broad Hindu deity usage — avoid. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: परमेश्वर must NOT be substituted for यहोवा at any of the book’s six covenant-name occurrences (1:1,4,8,15,18,21); it remains the generic term for cross-reference/bridging notes only.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: यहोवा का दिन
Transliteration: yôm-YHWH / yahovā kā dina
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: प्रभु का दिन, समय का अंत (generic ‘end of time’)
Original: יוֹם־יְהוָה
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:15 (implied 1:8,11-14). Single highest-stakes term in the book. Fixed OT prophetic technical phrase for a decisive, imminent, universal act of divine judgment/vindication — not a calendar date, and not to be assimilated to cyclical yuga/pralaya cosmology. Must render यहोवा का दिन identically at every occurrence and cross-reference established Hindi Amos/Joel renderings. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence, explicit and implied.
Yhwh Covenant Name
Approved rendering: यहोवा
Transliteration: YHWH / Yahovā
Doctrine: The Covenant Name and Sovereignty of YHWH
Rejected alternatives: प्रभु (as substitute), परमेश्वर (as substitute), ईश्वर (as substitute)
Original: יְהוָה
Category: God
Obadiah 1:1,4,8,15,18,21. The covenant name (Tetragrammaton), transliterated per established BSI OV/NV OT convention. Must be kept distinct from the baseline lord (प्रभु, NT κύριος) and god (परमेश्वर, generic) entries — collapsing यहोवा into either would erase covenant-name-specific force. A theologian note must make OT/NT continuity explicit wherever both vocabularies appear in the same lesson; consistency across all six occurrences is itself load-bearing, since every Critical doctrine in this book depends on it.
Adonai Yhwh Title
Approved rendering: प्रभु यहोवा
Transliteration: ʾAdōnāy YHWH / Prabhu Yahovā
Doctrine: The Covenant Name and Sovereignty of YHWH
Rejected alternatives: प्रभु (alone), यहोवा (alone)
Original: אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה
Category: God
Obadiah 1:1. Combined sovereign-title-plus-covenant-name formula opening the book. Never collapse to a single word — losing either half loses either the sovereignty claim or the covenant-relational claim asserted together.
Kingdom Belongs To The Lord
Approved rendering: राज्य यहोवा का होगा
Transliteration: wehāyetâh laYHWH hammelûkâh / rājya Yahovā kā hogā
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: राज्य परमेश्वर का होगा, राज्य प्रभु का होगा
Original: וְהָיְתָה לַיהוָה הַמְּלוּכָה
Category: Kingdom
Obadiah 1:21. The book’s climactic closing clause. Must retain यहोवा (never परमेश्वर or प्रभु alone). Mandatory theologian note required connecting this explicitly to the baseline kingdom_of_god entry (परमेश्वर का राज्य) as the same ultimate divine sovereignty in its later canonical proclamation, without silently merging the two surface forms. Mandatory theologian review without exception; treat on par with the baseline’s fixed-rendering rule for Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28.
Saviors Deliverers
Approved rendering: उद्धारकर्ता
Transliteration: môshiʿîm / uddhārakartā
Doctrine: Human Deliverers and the Uniqueness of Christ’s Salvation
Original: מוֹשִׁעִים
Category: Salvation
Obadiah 1:21. Plural human agents raised up on Mount Zion to judge Edom and deliver God’s people (Judges-type figures). Built on the same उद्धार root as the baseline Critical salvation entry (NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष). MANDATORY translator note required on EVERY occurrence distinguishing these historical, human, plural OT deliverers from Christ’s unique, singular, final उद्धार — without the note, this verse risks being read through India’s multi-avatar/multi-deliverer religious assumptions as endorsing plural, competing saviorhood.
Brother
Approved rendering: भाई
Transliteration: ʾāch / ʾāchîkhā / bhāī
Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Rejected alternatives: पड़ोसी राष्ट्र (neighboring nation), सामान्य जन (generic people/foreign nation)
Original: אָח / אָחִיךָ
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:10,12. Literal kinship term (Jacob/Esau, twin brothers, Genesis 25). Must remain strictly literal throughout; never generalize to ‘neighboring people’ or ‘fellow nation.’ The entire moral force of the oracle — and of the doctrine ‘Violence against God’s People’ — depends on Edom’s aggression being against a literal brother, categorically worse than ordinary foreign hostility. Zero tolerance for generalization.
High Risk Terms
Holy
Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मल
[Inherited from Romans package.] पवित्र = set apart for God; morally pure. शुद्ध has ritual purity connotations. Use पवित्र consistently. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: reused exactly in holy_mountain (मेरा पवित्र पर्वत, 1:16), Zion’s God-owned sanctuary status desecrated by Edom.
Covenant
Approved rendering: वाचा
Transliteration: vācā
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: अनुबंध, समझौता
[Inherited from Romans package.] Relational covenant bond; more than a legal contract. Established in BSI OV. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: base term for covenant_alliance (1:7), used there in the ordinary political-treaty sense — must be disambiguated from this theological Abrahamic/Davidic sense; संधि is preferred alongside वाचा in that specific verse.
Remnant
Approved rendering: बचे हुए लोग
Transliteration: bace hue loga
Doctrine: Election
[Inherited from Romans package.] Romans 9:27; 11:5. The remnant chosen by grace — keep the grace-not-works basis explicit. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: reused exactly for remnant_deliverance (פְּלֵיטָה, 1:17); must form a deliberate antonym pair with no_survivor (1:18).
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का क्रोध
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā krodha
Doctrine: Judgment
Rejected alternatives: बदला
[Inherited from Romans package.] Romans 1:18. God’s settled, righteous judgment against sin; never personal revenge (बदला) or capricious anger. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: this क्रोध/बदला distinction governs recompense (गְּמֻלְךָ, 1:15) — the object recompensed may be called बदला, but the surrounding clause must read as this same righteous-judgment register, not vindictive payback.
Sovereignty
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की संप्रभुता
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī samprabhutā
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति
[Inherited from Romans package.] Spelling adjudicated v2: संप्रभुता (anusvara form). God’s personal rule; never impersonal fate/karma. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: conceptually underlies kingdom_belongs_to_the_lord (1:21); this generic sovereignty vocabulary may be used in theologian commentary/notes bridging to that verse but must never replace राज्य यहोवा का होगा as the verse’s actual rendering.
Prophetic Vision
Approved rendering: दर्शन
Transliteration: chazôn / darśana
Doctrine: Inspiration of Prophetic Revelation
Original: חָזוֹן
Category: Revelation
Obadiah 1:1. Established Hindi Bible convention for prophetic-book superscriptions (cf. यशायाह का दर्शन). Reopens, in a narrower and different grammatical role, a term the Galatians baseline explicitly rejected for ἀποκάλυψις (see revelation entry) due to Hindu devotional darshan connotations. MANDATORY translator note required distinguishing this fixed literary-genre title (received from a personal, sovereign, initiating God) from a devotee’s self-attained mystical/devotional sight. Theologian adjudication required to confirm this narrow exception is safe and to memorialize the distinction so it is not re-litigated per occurrence.
Pride Of Heart
Approved rendering: मन का घमण्ड
Transliteration: zedôn libbekhā
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride
Original: זְדוֹן לִבְּךָ
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:3. Insolent, God-defying self-exaltation rooted in geographic/military self-security (‘who shall bring me down?’), the direct textual anchor of the doctrine. Extends the baseline घमण्ड root (Romans 3:27, a milder disqualified-boasting sense) to this much more forceful register; must not be read as mere vanity. Theologian review recommended to confirm sufficient force is retained.
Eagle
Approved rendering: उकाब
Transliteration: nesher / ukāba
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride
Rejected alternatives: गरुड़
Original: נֶשֶׁר
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:4. Stock prophetic image of soaring self-exaltation. MUST NOT render as गरुड़ — the mythological eagle-deity/vahana (mount) of Vishnu in Hindu tradition; using it here would attach an unwanted quasi-divine, exalted-status association to an image of pride about to be humbled by YHWH. उकाब is the neutral, established, non-syncretic Hindi word for a large raptor. This substitution must be locked at the translation-memory/validation-rule level, not left to per-translator judgment.
Violence
Approved rendering: हिंसा
Transliteration: chamas / hiṃsā
Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Rejected alternatives: संघर्ष, झगड़ा
Original: חָמָס
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:10. Violent, unjust wrongdoing rupturing covenant/kinship obligation. हिंसा is the standard, non-syncretic Hindi term (its antonym अहिंसा is a major Hindu/Jain ethical concept, but हिंसा itself carries no competing religious connotation). Flagged High not for syncretism but because this word carries the full weight of a named curriculum doctrine; must never be softened to संघर्ष (conflict) or झगड़ा (quarrel).
Nations Goyim
Approved rendering: राष्ट्र
Transliteration: gôyim / rāṣṭra
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD for All Nations
Original: גּוֹיִם
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:15-16. Nations collectively, universal objects of the Day of the LORD’s judgment. Kept DISTINCT from the baseline gentiles entry (अन्यजाति), which is reserved for the NT Jew/Gentile unity doctrine. Must not be softened to ‘some nations’ or ‘the surrounding peoples,’ which would undercut the doctrine’s universal claim.
Holy Mountain
Approved rendering: मेरा पवित्र पर्वत
Transliteration: har qodshî
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: הַר קָדְשִׁי
Category: God
Obadiah 1:16. Zion, God’s own sanctuary-mountain, desecrated by Edom’s triumphalist plundering. Reuses baseline पवित्र exactly; must not drift toward शुद्ध (ritual purity).
Remnant Deliverance
Approved rendering: बचे हुए लोग
Transliteration: peleitâh
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: פְּלֵיטָה
Category: Election
Obadiah 1:17. Those who escape and are preserved through judgment on Zion. Reuses the baseline remnant entry EXACTLY (established Romans 9:27; 11:5) — grace-preserved, not self-achieved. Forms a deliberate antonym pair with no_survivor (1:18); this contrast must remain visible.
No Survivor
Approved rendering: कोई भी शेष न रहेगा
Transliteration: sārîd
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: שָׂרִיד
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:18. Technical antonym of remnant_deliverance, denoting the total absence of any survivor of the house of Esau. Keep this contrast visible across vv.17-18: total, irrevocable judgment for the unrepentant oppressor versus total, gracious preservation for God’s people.
Cut Off Forever
Approved rendering: सर्वदा के लिए मिटा दिया जाएगा
Transliteration: nikhrat le-ʿôlām
Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Original: נִכְרַת לְעוֹלָם
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:10. Total, irrevocable judgment pronounced on Edom for violence against Jacob. Compounds मिटा देना (erase/wipe out) with सर्वदा के लिए (forever) — double-marking totality AND permanence. Sets up the remnant/no-survivor contrast completed in vv.17-18; must not be softened to a temporary setback.
Medium Risk Terms
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का राज्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का राष्ट्र
[Inherited from Romans package.] God’s sovereign reign. Distinguish from political kingdom concepts. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: this NT-register term must be explicitly, but not silently, bridged to kingdom_belongs_to_the_lord (राज्य यहोवा का होगा, 1:21) via a mandatory theologian note establishing OT/NT canonical continuity without merging the two surface forms.
Israel
Approved rendering: इस्राएल
Transliteration: Isrāela
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
[Inherited from Romans package.] Proper name; BSI established form. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: base form for israel_children (इस्राएल की सन्तान / इस्राएली, 1:20).
Revelation
Approved rendering: प्रकाशन
Transliteration: prakāśana
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: दर्शन (darshan, devotional sight of a deity), साक्षात्कार (mystical self-realization)
[Inherited from Romans package.] Galatians 1:12,16; 2:2. God’s objective disclosure grounding Paul’s apostolic authority, not a devotional/mystical attainment. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: this entry’s explicit rejection of दर्शन is the direct precedent creating tension with prophetic_vision (חָזוֹן, 1:1), where दर्शन is nonetheless retained for the fixed OT superscription genre-label. The two cases are distinguished, not contradictory: theologian sign-off required to keep this narrow exception isolated to Obadiah’s superscription usage only.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: अन्यजाति
Transliteration: anyajāti
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: विदेशी
[Inherited from Romans package.] Non-Jews; established BSI term. Use राष्ट्र (nations) in mission contexts. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: must be kept DISTINCT from nations_goyim (राष्ट्र, 1:15-16); अन्यजाति is reserved for the NT Jew/Gentile unity doctrine and must not be used for Obadiah’s hostile-nations-under-judgment referent.
Gloated Rejoiced
Approved rendering: आनन्दित हुआ / हँसा
Transliteration: sāmachtā
Doctrine: Schadenfreude and Moral Accountability
Original: שָׂמַחְתָּ
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:12. Culpable schadenfreude over a brother’s ruin, not passive complicity. Must carry the negative, culpable sense, since आनन्द (joy) is used positively elsewhere in this Language Package; the clause’s negative object (‘your brother’s day,’ ‘the sons of Judah’s destruction’) must remain grammatically explicit so the term is not misread as innocent happiness.
Recompense
Approved rendering: तेरा फल/बदला
Transliteration: gemulkhā
Doctrine: Divine Recompense (Lex Talionis Justice)
Original: גְּמֻלְךָ
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:15. Just, proportionate divine recompense returned on the doer’s own head — lex talionis structure. Must read as God’s judicial verdict, not personal vengeance (बदला’s dominant everyday sense) nor impersonal कर्म-फल. Always frame with यहोवा as the explicit administering agent.
Possess Inheritance
Approved rendering: अधिकार में लेना / मीरास
Transliteration: yārash / môrāshâh
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: יָרַש / מוֹרָשָׁה
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:17,19-20. Legal, territorial possession of ancestral land restored to the house of Jacob. Must be kept DISTINCT from the Galatians baseline’s spiritual-inheritance terms (वारिस, प्रतिज्ञा) — Obadiah’s referent is literal, historical, geographic land, not the NT believer’s spiritual inheritance in Christ. Keep anchored to explicit place-names in every occurrence.
Exile Captivity
Approved rendering: बँधुआई
Transliteration: gālût
Doctrine: Exile and Covenant Restoration
Original: גָּלוּת
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:20. Technical covenant-curse-and-restoration term (Deuteronomy 28-30; Jeremiah 29); the very people once exiled become restoration’s agents — a grace-driven reversal, not a merely political fortune-reversal.
Covenant Alliance
Approved rendering: वाचा/संधि
Transliteration: berît
Doctrine: Betrayal by Covenant Allies
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:7. Ordinary political/personal treaty-alliance — same root as the theological covenant but used here in its secular-treaty sense (Edom’s own confederates who betray it). संधि (treaty) is the preferred primary choice in this specific verse to visibly separate it from the baseline वाचा’s Abrahamic/Davidic theological register; a light disambiguating note is recommended wherever both senses could be confused.
Day Of Calamity
Approved rendering: विपत्ति/अनर्थ का दिन
Transliteration: yôm ʾêdô
Doctrine: Schadenfreude and Moral Accountability
Original: יוֹם אֵידוֹ
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:13. Jacob’s historical day of disaster/ruin, over which Edom gloated. Semantically adjacent to but DISTINCT from the technical यहोवा का दिन (day_of_the_lord); keep the two phrases visibly related without collapsing them into one — one denotes Judah’s historical calamity, the other the eschatological universal judgment it anticipates.
Totality Idiom
Approved rendering: जैसे वे कभी थे ही नहीं
Transliteration: hāyû keloʾ hāyû
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD for All Nations
Original: הָיוּ כְּלוֹא הָיוּ
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:16. Idiom of total annihilation — the nations under judgment will be as though they had never existed. Must be kept as complete, retroactive negation of existence, not softened to ‘diminished’ or ‘weakened,’ which would understate the totality asserted and could suggest cyclical fading rather than decisive judgment.
Drink Cup Of Judgment
Approved rendering: पीना / निगल जाना
Transliteration: shātâh / lāʿâh
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD for All Nations
Original: שָׁתָה / לָעָה
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:16. Stock prophetic idiom of ‘drinking the cup’ of God’s judgment (cf. Jeremiah 25:15-29; Isaiah 51:17). A brief translator gloss is recommended so the judicial cup-metaphor is not lost on readers unfamiliar with this OT convention.
Israel Children
Approved rendering: इस्राएल की सन्तान / इस्राएली
Transliteration: Benê Yisrāʾêl
Doctrine: Exile and Covenant Restoration
Original: בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:20. Children of Israel, whose exiled host becomes the agent of restored territorial possession. Reuses baseline इस्राएल exactly; theological usage here must remain unambiguous despite contemporary political sensitivity around the proper name.
Low Risk Terms
Boasting
Approved rendering: घमण्ड
Transliteration: ghamaṇḍa
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
[Inherited from Romans package.] Romans 3:27. Excluded by the law of faith. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: root extended (with escalated force and risk tier) into pride_of_heart (मन का घमण्ड, 1:3); Obadiah’s usage is far more forceful — insolent, God-defying self-exaltation, not mere disqualified self-congratulation — and must be read with that wider register in this book.
Prophet
Approved rendering: भविष्यद्वक्ता
Transliteration: bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ज्योतिषी
[Inherited from Romans package.] God’s spokesperson; do not confuse with astrologer/fortune-teller. Use नबी (nabi) for OT prophets in informal/note contexts. RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: Obadiah himself functions in this role; see obadiah_prophet_name and prophetic_vision below.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: भविष्यवाणी
Transliteration: bhaviṣyavāṇī
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: भविष्यफल
[Inherited from Romans package.] God-inspired declaration; distinct from astrological predictions (भविष्यफल). RELEVANCE TO OBADIAH: applicable background term for the book’s genre as a whole, distinct from the technical superscription noun चाज़ोन (rendered दर्शन, not भविष्यवाणी).
Mount Zion
Approved rendering: सिय्योन पर्वत
Transliteration: Har Tzîyôn
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Original: הַר־צִיּוֹן
Category: Kingdom
Obadiah 1:17,21. Established Hindi Bible proper name; site of both deliverance/holiness (1:17) and the future exercise of divine kingship (1:21).
Wise Men
Approved rendering: बुद्धिमान लोग
Transliteration: chakhāmîm
Doctrine: The Stripping of Human Wisdom and Might
Original: חֲכָמִים
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:8. Edom’s proverbial wise counselors (cf. Job 2:11, Eliphaz the Temanite), stripped away in judgment. Low risk; no competing religious-vocabulary collision.
Mighty Men

Transliteration: gibbôrîm
Doctrine: The Stripping of Human Wisdom and Might
Original: גִּבּוֹרִים
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:9. Edom’s professional warrior elite, dismayed and stripped of strength. Standard Hindi military vocabulary; no theological collision.

Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Original: פֶּרֶק
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:14. The mountain pass/crossroads where Edom stationed itself to ambush and hand over Judean refugees. Concrete geographic/military ambush imagery, naturally intelligible in Indian hill-terrain context; no syncretism risk.
House Of Jacob
Approved rendering: याकूब का घराना
Transliteration: Bêt Yaʿaqôv
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: בֵּית יַעֲקֹב
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:17-18. Covenant people descended from Jacob, restored possessors and agents of judgment on Esau. Established Hindi proper-name-plus-‘house of’ formula.
House Of Esau
Approved rendering: एसाव का घराना / एसाव का पहाड़ी देश
Transliteration: Bêt/Har ʿÊsāv
Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Original: בֵּית עֵשָׂו / הַר עֵשָׂו
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:8-9,18-19,21. Edom, descended from Esau, Jacob’s twin brother. Low lexical risk, but the theological identity as literal twin-brother-nation is load-bearing context (see brother entry), not merely a place-name label.
House Of Joseph
Approved rendering: यूसुफ का घराना
Transliteration: Bêt Yôsêf
Doctrine: Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)
Original: בֵּית יוֹסֵף
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:18. Named alongside the house of Jacob as a consuming flame against Esau in the fire-metaphor of judgment. Established Hindi proper name.
Edom
Approved rendering: एदोम
Transliteration: ʾEdôm

Category: Covenant
Throughout Obadiah. The nation descended from Esau, primary addressee and object of judgment. Established Hindi Bible proper name.
Thieves And Raiders
Approved rendering: चोर / रात के लुटेरे
Transliteration: gannāvîm / shôdedê laylâh
Doctrine: Betrayal by Covenant Allies
Original: גַּנָּבִים / שׁוֹדְדֵי לַיְלָה
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:5. Ordinary criminals who would at least leave gleanings behind — a rhetorical foil escalating the indictment against Edom’s total betrayal by its own allies. Standard Hindi vocabulary; no theological collision.
Geographic Proper Names
Approved rendering: नेगेव, शपेला, पलिश्ती, इफ्राईम, शमरोन, बिन्यामीन, गिलाद, कनानी, सारफत, सफारद, तेमान
