Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Titus (English → Hindi)
Methodology
This analysis proceeds in two parts, per the PRD Phase 1 Step 1 mandate:
Part A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse (Titus 2:11–3:8). Every load-bearing term receives full treatment: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English gloss variants, contextual theological meaning in Titus, and the Hindi destination-language rendering with its risk tier.
Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Whole-Book Study (Titus 1–3). Every chapter of Titus is analyzed for load-bearing theological vocabulary not already covered in the core-passage treatment. Where a chapter section overlaps the core passage’s verse range, that overlap is noted explicitly rather than repeated.
Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there; this is noted at each occurrence as “[TM: reused].” New terms introduced by Titus are proposed with a risk tier consistent with the baseline’s risk methodology (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and are candidates for addition to the translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 / Phase 2.
A special caution applies throughout: Titus is a Pastoral Epistle saturated with (a) a “health” metaphor for doctrine (ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία, “sound/healthy teaching”), (b) household/social-order vocabulary (submission, elders, masters) that intersects sensitively with Indian social hierarchy and caste structures, and (c) two of the most dangerous single lexical items in the entire New Testament for a Hindi-Hindu-background audience: ἐπιφάνεια (appearing/epiphany — collision with avatāra) and παλιγγενεσία (regeneration — whose Greek components literally mean “again” + “birth,” i.e., precisely the two morphemes of the forbidden Hindi term पुनर्जन्म, reincarnation). These receive elevated treatment below.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Titus 2:11–3:8
Titus 2:11
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ | charis tou theou | God’s unearned favor/gift | unmerited favor; grace-gift | ”grace of God” | The efficient cause of salvation and of godly living alike (2:12) — not a static gift but an active, personified agent that “trains” (v.12). | अनुग्रह [TM: reused] | High (baseline) |
| ἐπεφάνη | epephanē (aor. pass. of ἐπιφαίνω) | “shone forth / became visible” | to appear, be manifested, become openly visible (of light, of a person, of a deity in Hellenistic usage) | “appeared,” “has been revealed,” “was manifested” | Grace is not an abstract principle but a historical, objective event — the Christ-event. Paired with 2:13 (Christ’s future ἐπιφάνεια) and 3:4 (God’s kindness “appeared”), this verb-family frames the whole core passage between two “appearings”: grace’s past appearing (2:11) and Christ’s future appearing (2:13). | प्रकट हुआ है (prakaṭa huā hai) | High — Hellenistic ἐπιφάνεια vocabulary was used of a deity’s periodic visible manifestation to devotees, structurally similar to the Hindu concept of avatāra (a deity’s periodic descent/appearance in the world) or darśan (visible manifestation of the divine to a devotee). NEVER use अवतरण or अवतार-family vocabulary. प्रकट होना (a general disclosure verb, “to become visible/be revealed”) avoids the avatar-specific connotation. Requires a translator note on first use distinguishing a one-time, historical, bodily event from a repeatable cyclical divine descent. |
| σωτήριος | sōtērios | ”saving,” “bringing salvation” | adjective form related to σωτηρία/σωτήρ | ”bringing salvation,” “salvation-bringing” | Grace itself is characterized as inherently salvific — grace and salvation are inseparable; grace does not merely offer the possibility of salvation but effects it. | उद्धार लाने वाला / उद्धारदायक (uddhāra lāne vālā) | Critical (extends baseline उद्धार) |
| πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις | pasin anthrōpois | ”to/for all humans” | universal scope — every human being without ethnic, social, or caste distinction | ”for all people,” “to all men” | Echoes the Romans universal-scope-of-gospel doctrine: grace’s saving appearance has no caste, class, or ethnic boundary. Must not be softened to “for all kinds of people” (implying categories) rather than “for every single person.” | सब मनुष्यों के लिये (saba manuṣyoṅ ke liye) | High — universality must be retained unqualified, per baseline universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine. |
Titus 2:12
“…training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παιδεύουσα | paideuousa (pres. ptc. of παιδεύω) | “training/educating/child-rearing (as an active discipler)“ | to educate, discipline, train (often of a parent training a child); can carry a disciplinary/corrective nuance elsewhere (Hebrews 12) but here is positively pedagogical | ”training,” “teaching,” “disciplining,” “instructing” | THE key term for the curriculum doctrine “Grace That Trains for Godly Living.” Grace itself — not the law, not human willpower — is the active subject that trains believers into godly character. This directly reverses any works-based or merit-based sanctification model. | प्रशिक्षित करता है / सिखाती है (praśikṣit karatā hai) | High — Must not be rendered with a term suggesting self-achieved ascetic discipline (तपस्या, “austerity/penance,” is explicitly forbidden here) — grace must remain the grammatical agent doing the training, not the believer’s own effort. This is the doctrinal hinge distinguishing grace-empowered sanctification from a karma/tapasya self-training model. |
| ἀρνησάμενοι | arnēsamenoi | ”having renounced/denied” | to renounce, disown, reject | ”renouncing,” “denying,” “having rejected” | The negative counterpart to positive godly living — a decisive turning-away, parallel to but distinct from baseline repentance (मन फिराव). | अस्वीकार करके / त्याग करके (asvīkāra karake) | Medium |
| ἀσέβειαν | asebeian | ”ungodliness/impiety” | lack of reverence toward God; the opposite of εὐσέβεια | ”ungodliness,” “impiety,” “irreverence” | Direct antonym of the letter’s key virtue-term εὐσέβεια (godliness); see godliness entry below. | अभक्ति / भक्तिहीनता (abhakti) | High — mirrors the risk profile of its antonym (see below). |
| κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας | kosmikas epithymias | ”worldly desires/passions” | desires oriented toward this present, passing world-order | ”worldly passions,” “worldly lusts” | Parallels baseline flesh caution (शरीर की अभिलाषाएँ) — desires rooted in the present fallen age, not the physical body itself. | संसारिक अभिलाषाएँ (saṃsārik abhilāṣāeṅ) | Medium — must not read as body-negation/asceticism (matter itself is not evil); the fault is the age’s orientation, not embodiment. |
| σωφρόνως καὶ δικαίως καὶ εὐσεβῶς | sōphronōs kai dikaiōs kai eusebōs | ”self-controlled-ly, justly, godly-ly” | a triad of adverbs describing the whole of godly conduct: toward self (self-control), toward others (justice), toward God (godliness) | “self-controlled, upright, and godly” | Structural triad summarizing the entire ethical content of grace’s training. | संयम से, धार्मिकता से, और भक्ति से (saṃyam se, dhārmikatā se, aur bhakti se) | High (compound of self-control [Medium], धार्मिकता [Critical, TM reused], and भक्ति/godliness [High]) |
| ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι | en tō nyn aiōni | ”in the present age” | the current world-order, as opposed to the age to come | ”in this present age,” “in the current world” | Sets up the “already/not yet” eschatological frame completed by v.13’s future hope. | इस वर्तमान युग में (isa vartamāna yuga meṅ) | Low-Medium — युग (yuga) carries strong Hindu cosmological connotation (cyclical world-ages: Satya, Kali Yuga, etc.); context must make clear this is a linear historical epoch bounded by Christ’s first and second appearing, not a point within an endless cosmic cycle. |
Titus 2:13
“…waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσδεχόμενοι | prosdechomenoi | ”eagerly awaiting/expecting” | to wait for with anticipation and welcome | ”awaiting,” “looking for,” “expecting” | Active, hope-filled expectation, not passive resignation or fatalistic waiting. | आशा से रुके/बाट जोहते हुए (āśā se prateekṣā karate hue) | Low-Medium |
| μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα | makarian elpida | ”blessed hope” | ἐλπίς = confident expectation grounded in a reliable promise (not wishful thinking) | “blessed hope,” “happy expectation” | Ties directly to 1:2’s “hope of eternal life” and 3:7’s “hope of eternal life” — an inclusio around the whole letter. See दोdicated ἐλπίς entry in Ch.1 below. | धन्य आशा (dhanya āśā) | Medium (see ἐλπίς entry) |
| ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης | epiphaneian tēs doxēs | ”the appearing/manifestation of the glory” | the visible, glorious future coming of Christ | ”appearing of the glory,” “glorious appearing” | The Second Coming, the eschatological bookend to grace’s first ἐπιφάνεια in v.11. | महिमा का प्रकट होना (mahimā kā prakaṭa honā) | High — महिमा [TM: reused, महिमा High] combined with प्रकट होना carries the same avatar-collision caution as v.11’s ἐπεφάνη. Must be read as the singular, final, visible return of the one Lord Jesus Christ, never a repeatable divine manifestation. |
| τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | tou megalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou | ”of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” | grammatically (Sharp’s rule construction: single article governing both “God” and “Savior”) one person is named by both titles | ”our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” | THE central Christological affirmation of the letter. Jesus Christ is directly called “great God,” identifying him as fully divine, not merely “a divine being” or “God’s representative.” This is a Critical-risk deity-of-Christ text. | हमारे महान परमेश्वर और उद्धारकर्ता यीशु मसीह (hamāre mahān Parameśvara aur uddhārakartā Yīśu Masīha) | Critical — The Hindi must preserve the single-referent grammatical structure: “our great God and Savior” both describe Yīśu Masīha as one person, not two beings (“our great God, and [also] our Savior Jesus Christ”). A Hindi rendering that inserts a comma/conjunction implying two distinct referents would sever this direct affirmation of Christ’s deity. Mandatory theologian review. परमेश्वर [TM: reused, Critical]. |
| σωτῆρος | sōtēros | ”Savior” (title, noun) | deliverer, rescuer; in the Hellenistic world also a title of emperors and deities (sōtēr) | “Savior” | New key term — Titus’s dominant Christological/theological title (used 6x: 1:3,4; 2:10,13; 3:4,6), applied identically to both “God our Savior” (the Father, 1:3; 2:10; 3:4) and “Jesus Christ our Savior” (1:4; 2:13; 3:6). The deliberate parallel use of the identical title for both Father and Son is itself an argument for Christ’s deity, alongside 2:13’s direct “great God” title. | उद्धारकर्ता (uddhārakartā) | Critical (new entry; extends baseline उद्धार) — Must be rendered identically every time it is applied to either the Father or the Son, to preserve Paul’s deliberate title-sharing argument. Any inconsistency (e.g., translating “Savior” one way for God and another way for Christ) would erase this Christological argument. |
Titus 2:14
“…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὃς ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν | hos edōken heauton hyper hēmōn | ”who gave himself for/on behalf of us” | substitutionary self-giving | ”who gave himself for us” | Parallels the baseline Galatians entry gave_himself_for_me exactly in form (Christ’s self-substitution). | जिसने अपने आप को हमारे लिये दे दिया (jisane apane āpa ko hamāre liye de diyā) | High — [TM: pattern reused from gave_himself_for_me]; direction of the gift runs from God to sinners, never the reverse (not a devotee’s offering to a deity). |
| λυτρώσηται | lytrōsētai | ”might redeem/ransom” | to release by paying a price; deliverance-by-purchase | ”redeem,” “ransom,” “deliver” | Redemption from lawlessness specifically — a decisive, price-paid rescue, not gradual self-improvement. | छुड़ाए (chuṛāe) | High — [TM: reuses छुटकारा/redemption family]; never मुक्ति/मोक्ष. |
| πάσης ἀνομίας | pasēs anomias | ”all lawlessness” | ἀνομία = “without-law-ness,” transgression against law as such (distinct from ἁμαρτία, general sin/missing-the-mark) | “all lawlessness,” “every kind of wickedness” | Frames redemption as deliverance from a condition of being fundamentally opposed to God’s order, not merely from isolated bad deeds. | सब प्रकार के व्यवस्था-उल्लंघन / अधर्म (saba prakāra ke vyavasthā-ullaṅghana) | High (new entry) — Baseline explicitly rejects अधर्म as a rendering for “sin” (पाप) precisely because it imports Hindu dharma-cosmology (implying a lack of cosmic dharma-duty rather than transgression against God’s revealed law). The same caution extends to ἀνομία. व्यवस्था-उल्लंघन (“transgression of the Law,” built on the established व्यवस्था term) is the doctrinally safer construction; अधर्म should be avoided or used only with an explicit clarifying gloss. Flag for theologian review. |
| καθαρίσῃ | katharisē | ”might purify/cleanse” | ritual and moral cleansing | ”purify,” “cleanse,” “make clean” | Christ’s own cleansing action creates a holy people — echoes OT purification imagery but accomplished once-for-all by Christ, not by ongoing ritual works. | शुद्ध करे (śuddha kare) | High (new entry) — शुद्ध carries ritual-purity connotations (per baseline’s caution against शुद्ध for “holy”). Must be anchored with context/note making clear this is Christ’s completed cleansing work through his self-giving (v.14a), not a repeatable ritual purification (cf. Hindu shuddhi rites) that the people perform on themselves. |
| λαὸν περιούσιον | laon periousion | ”a people for his own possession” | LXX-echoing covenant term (Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 14:2, 26:18) — God’s own treasured, particular people | ”a people for his own possession,” “his very own people,” “a peculiar people” | Christ’s redemptive purpose culminates in forming a covenant community — continuity between Israel’s covenant identity and the church. | अपनी निज प्रजा (apanī nija prajā) | Medium (new entry) — Must be read as an inclusive New Covenant identity open to all who believe (cf. baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles), not an ethnic-privilege or caste-like exclusive category. |
| ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων | zēlōtēn kalōn ergōn | ”zealous of good works” | ζηλωτής = one who is eagerly devoted to; καλὰ ἔργα = good/noble deeds | ”zealous for good works,” “eager to do good” | THE key phrase for “Sound Doctrine and Good Works.” Good works are the fruit and purpose of redemption, never its cause. | भले कामों का उत्साही (bhale kāmoṅ kā utsāhī) | High (new entry) — उत्साह [TM: reused, zeal, Medium]. भले काम (“good works,” never भले कर्म) must use काम consistently throughout Titus (occurs six times: 1:16; 2:7,14; 3:1,8,14) per the baseline’s absolute रule that कर्म is forbidden for ἔργα (imports merit-accumulation cosmology). This is the single most frequent load-bearing phrase in the letter and must be rendered identically every time. |
Titus 2:15
“Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| λάλει | lalei | ”speak” | to speak, declare | ”speak,” “declare” | Titus’s teaching mandate. | बोल / कह (bola) | Low |
| παρακάλει | parakalei | ”exhort/encourage” | [TM: reused, exhort, प्रोत्साहित करना/विनती — context-sensitive per baseline note] | “exhort,” “encourage,” “urge” | Positive pastoral encouragement. | प्रोत्साहित कर (protsāhita kara) | Low [TM: reused] |
| ἔλεγχε | elenche | ”rebuke/reprove/refute” | to expose fault, correct, refute wrong teaching or conduct | ”rebuke,” “reprove,” “correct,” “refute” | Corrective authority paired with encouragement — the full range of pastoral speech; recurs at 1:9,13 against false teachers. | उलाहना दे / दोषी ठहरा (ulāhanā de) | Medium (new entry) — tone must remain corrective-pastoral, consistent across 1:9,13; 2:15; not merely harsh scolding, but firm doctrinal correction. |
| μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς | meta pasēs epitagēs | ”with all authority/command” | ἐπιταγή = authoritative command (also 1:3; 3:1 note) | “with all authority,” “with full authority” | Titus’s teaching carries derived apostolic authority, not merely personal opinion. | पूरे अधिकार के साथ (pūre adhikāra ke sātha) | Medium (new entry) |
| περιφρονείτω | periphroneitō | ”let him disregard/despise” | to look down on, treat with contempt | ”disregard,” “despise,” “look down on” | Warns against undermining pastoral authority because of Titus’s relative youth or lower status. | तुझे तुच्छ न जाने (tujhe tuccha na jāne) | Low |
Titus 3:1
“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρχαῖς ἐξουσίαις | archais exousiais | ”rulers, authorities” | governmental/civil power structures | ”rulers and authorities,” “government” | [TM: reused, governing_authorities, शासन के अधिकारी, Medium] | शासन के अधिकारी (śāsana ke adhikārī) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| ὑποτάσσεσθαι | hypotassesthai | ”to be subject to/submit” | to place oneself under, arrange oneself under an order; voluntary ordered submission (middle/passive), not forced subjugation | ”be submissive,” “be subject to,” “submit” | THE key term for “Submission to Authority.” Recurs at 2:5 (wives to husbands), 2:9 (slaves to masters), 3:1 (believers to civil rulers) — a consistent household/social-order vocabulary. | अधीन होना (adhīna honā) | High (new entry) — Must convey voluntary, God-ordered submission within a structure, distinct from (a) caste-based enforced subordination assumed permanent and unchangeable by birth, and (b) any implication of inherent inferiority of the one submitting. Tone must remain non-contemptuous (cf. baseline weak_in_faith tone precedent). Given the gender and social-hierarchy dimensions across all three occurrences, flag every instance for combined theologian and native speaker review. |
| πειθαρχεῖν | peitharchein | ”to obey [authority]“ | to obey a ruler/authority (distinct from general πείθω, “persuade/obey”) | “be obedient,” “obey authorities” | Reinforces ὑποτάσσεσθαι with active compliance. | आज्ञा मानना (ājñā mānanā) | Medium (new entry) |
| πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἑτοίμους | pros pan ergon agathon hetoimous | ”ready for every good work” | ἀγαθόν, synonym of καλόν — “good" | "ready for every good work” | Reuses the good-works vocabulary (see 2:14 note): submission to authority is not passive but positively expressed in good deeds toward society. | हर एक भले काम के लिये तैयार (hara eka bhale kāma ke liye taiyāra) | High (reuses good_works entry) |
Titus 3:2
“…to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μηδένα βλασφημεῖν | mēdena blasphēmein | ”to slander/blaspheme no one” | to speak evil of, defame; same root as “blasphemy” against God, here directed at people | ”speak evil of no one,” “slander no one” | Extends reverence-for-persons ethics into daily speech. | किसी की निन्दा न करना (kisī kī nindā na karanā) | Low-Medium |
| ἀμάχους | amachous | ”not quarrelsome/peaceable” | ἄμαχος, negated μάχη (“battle/fight”) | “peaceable,” “not quarrelsome” | Contrasts with the μάχας νομικάς (“legal battles”) of 3:9 — consistency of the “avoid strife” theme across the letter. | झगड़ालू न हो (jhagaṛālū na ho) | Low (new entry) |
| ἐπιεικεῖς | epieikeis | ”gentle/considerate/reasonable” | forbearing, not insisting on one’s own rights | ”gentle,” “considerate,” “reasonable” | Part of the relational-virtue cluster required of all believers, echoing elder qualifications (1:7-8). | उदार / कोमल स्वभाव के (kōmala svabhāva ke) | Low (new entry) |
| πραΰτητα | prautēta | ”gentleness/meekness” | strength held in restraint, not weakness | ”gentleness,” “meekness” | [TM: term-family reused — baseline uses नम्रता for πραΰτης-family in restore_gently, Galatians 6:1] | नम्रता (namratā) | Low [TM: term reused] |
Titus 3:3
“For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀνόητοι | anoētoi | ”foolish/without understanding” | lacking spiritual perception | ”foolish,” “senseless” | Sets up the “before/after” contrast structure completed in v.4-7 — the letter’s own micro-narrative of salvation. | निर्बुद्धि / मूर्ख (nirbuddhi) | Low |
| ἀπειθεῖς | apeitheis | ”disobedient” | ἀπειθέω, refusing to obey/believe; antonym-family of the baseline obedience_of_faith | ”disobedient” | Contrasts with obedience-of-faith doctrine (baseline विश्वास की आज्ञाकारिता, High). | आज्ञा न माननेवाले (ājñā na mānanevāle) | Medium (antonym of TM-reused doctrine) |
| πλανώμενοι | planōmenoi | ”being led astray/deceived” | to wander, be deceived | ”led astray,” “deceived,” “going astray” | The pre-conversion condition of spiritual wandering, echoing 1:14’s rejection of “myths.” | भटकते हुए (bhaṭakate hue) | Low |
| δουλεύοντες | douleuontes | ”serving as slaves to” | [TM: reused, slavery family, दासत्व/दास] | “enslaved to,” “serving,” “slaves to” | The pre-conversion self was enslaved to passions — contrasted with the freedom secured in Christ (extends baseline Galatians freedom/slavery antithesis, though “freedom” is not explicit in Titus’s text). | दास बने हुए (dāsa bane hue) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς ποικίλαις | epithymiais kai hēdonais poikilais | ”various passions and pleasures” | ἡδονή = pleasure (root of “hedonism”) | “various passions and pleasures” | Sensory/appetitive bondage prior to grace’s training (2:12 reversal). | विभिन्न अभिलाषाओं और सुखों (vibhinna abhilāṣāoṅ aura sukhoṅ) | Low (new entry) |
| κακίᾳ καὶ φθόνῳ…μισοῦντες ἀλλήλους | kakia kai phthonō…misountes allēlous | ”malice and envy…hating one another” | vice list culminating in mutual hatred | ”malice and envy…hating one another” | Direct antithesis of baseline brotherly_love (भाईचारे का प्रेम) — the pre-conversion state is defined by its absence. | दुष्टता और डाह…एक दूसरे से बैर रखनेवाले (duṣṭatā aura ḍāha) | Low-Medium |
Titus 3:4
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared…”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χρηστότης | chrēstotēs | ”kindness/goodness” | [TM: reused, kindness_of_god, कृपा, Medium] | “kindness,” “goodness” | God’s character, not human merit, is the ground of the “before/after” transformation. | कृपा (kṛpā) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| φιλανθρωπία | philanthrōpia | ”love for humankind” | φιλ- (love) + ἄνθρωπος (humanity) — benevolent disposition toward people as such | ”loving kindness,” “love for mankind,” “philanthropy” | Distinct from generic secular philanthropy — this is God’s own saving disposition toward humanity, revealed concretely in Christ, not detached humanitarianism. | मनुष्यों के प्रति प्रेम (manuṣyoṅ ke prati prema) | Medium (new entry) — must not be flattened into humanitarian benevolence divorced from the gospel (cf. baseline christ_centered_ministry caution against “humanitarian service divorced from the gospel”). |
| ἐπεφάνη | epephanē | ”appeared” | [same verb as 2:11 — see full note there] | “appeared” | Third occurrence of the epiphaneia-family verb, completing the pattern (grace appeared 2:11; glory will appear 2:13; kindness appeared 3:4) — a deliberate structural inclusio around the whole core passage. | प्रकट हुई (prakaṭa huī) | High [see 2:11 note; same avatar-collision caution applies] |
| τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ | tou sōtēros hēmōn theou | ”of God our Savior” | [see σωτήρ entry, 2:13] | “God our Savior” | Applies the same “Savior” title to God the Father — completes the Father/Son title-sharing pattern. | हमारे उद्धारकर्ता परमेश्वर (hamāre uddhārakartā Parameśvara) | Critical [TM: reused rendering from 2:13’s उद्धारकर्ता entry — must be identical] |
Titus 3:5
“…he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.”
This is the doctrinal center of gravity of the entire letter and one of the highest-risk verses in the whole curriculum.
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς | ouk ex ergōn tōn en dikaiosynē ha epoiēsamen hēmeis | ”not from works done in righteousness which we did” | explicit exclusion of human moral achievement as the ground of salvation | ”not because of righteous works we had done,” “not by works of righteousness” | THE central verse for “Salvation by Grace not Works.” Direct structural parallel to baseline works_of_the_law/imputed_righteousness (Romans/Galatians): human-performed righteous deeds are explicitly excluded as the basis of salvation. | न धार्मिकता के उन कामों के कारण जो हमने किये (na dhārmikatā ke una kāmoṅ ke kāraṇa jo hamane kiye) | Critical — धार्मिकता [TM: reused, Critical]; काम not कर्म is mandatory here above all other occurrences in the letter, since this verse is the letter’s flattest possible parallel to “जैसा कर्म वैसा फल” folk theology; रендering with कर्म would make the verse assert “not by good karma we accumulated,” an almost exact inversion into a karma-theology affirmation-by-negation that a Hindu-background reader could misread as merely restating a Hindu principle rather than excluding it altogether. |
| κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος | kata to autou eleos | ”according to his own mercy” | [TM: reused, mercy, दया, Medium] | “according to his mercy” | The positive ground replacing works: God’s own mercy, not human merit. | उसकी दया के अनुसार (usakī dayā ke anusāra) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς | esōsen hēmas | ”he saved us” | [TM: reused, salvation/save family, उद्धार, Critical] | “he saved us” | Completed, definite past action — salvation is an accomplished divine act, not an ongoing uncertain process dependent on accumulating merit across a lifetime (or lifetimes). | हमें उद्धार दिया (hameṅ uddhāra diyā) | Critical [TM: reused] |
| διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας | dia loutrou palingenesias | ”through the washing/bath of regeneration” | λουτρόν = a washing, bath (probably alluding to baptism as the visible sign); παλιγγενεσία = “again-birth,” “re-genesis,” a new-creation birth | ”washing of regeneration,” “washing of new birth,” “bath of rebirth” | THE single highest-risk phrase in Titus. See extended notes below. | पुनरुत्थान-रूपी नये जन्म का धोना — see extended note | CRITICAL — dual maximum-risk term |
| καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου | kai anakainōseōs pneumatos hagiou | ”and renewal of/by the Holy Spirit” | ἀνακαίνωσις = making new again; distinct action but same event as παλιγγενεσία (one event, two aspects: washing/new-birth + Spirit’s renewing) | “renewal of the Holy Spirit,” “renewing by the Holy Spirit” | The efficient personal agent of the new birth is explicitly named: the Holy Spirit, a distinct divine Person — not an impersonal life-force or the believer’s own inner ātman. | और पवित्र आत्मा के द्वारा नये किए जाने से (aura Pavitra Ātmā ke dvārā naye kie jāne se) | High (new entry; related to but distinct from baseline renewing_of_the_mind, Romans 12:2, which describes ongoing sanctification renewal — this is the Spirit’s initial regenerating renewal). पवित्र आत्मा [TM: reused, Critical]. |
Extended note on λουτρὸν παλιγγενεσίας (washing of regeneration):
This phrase combines two independently dangerous elements:

λουτρόν (“washing/bath”): The baseline
baptismentry explicitly forbids स्नान (“ritual bathing”) as a rendering, precisely because it would evoke Hindu ritual purification bathing (tīrtha-snāna — e.g., bathing in the Ganges to wash away sin), one of the most widespread and deeply embedded religious practices in the Indian context. A literal rendering of λουτρόν as स्नान would present the gospel as functionally equivalent to sacred-river bathing. The rendering must either (a) use the established बपतिस्मा transliteration with a clarifying phrase connecting it to the once-for-all washing accomplished by Christ, or (b) use a descriptive phrase such as “धोए जाने” (being washed/cleansed) firmly anchored by context to the Spirit’s regenerating action, never a self-performed ritual act. -
παλιγγενεσία (“regeneration”): Composed of πάλιν (“again”) + γένεσις (“birth/becoming/genesis”) — these are exactly the two morphemes that compose the forbidden Hindi term पुनर्जन्म (पुन: “again” + जन्म “birth” = reincarnation). This is not merely a doctrine at risk of drifting toward this term through translator carelessness (as with the baseline
resurrectionandnew_birthentries); the Greek word’s own etymology is the literal semantic equivalent of the forbidden Hindi calque. A translator working word-by-word from Greek roots could arrive directly at पुनर्जन्म without any doctrinal error in the individual word choices — making this the single most etymologically dangerous term in the entire Titus curriculum, more dangerous even than ἀνάστασις (resurrection) or the Galatians new-birth vocabulary, because there the risk was of drift, but here the risk is of direct calque derivation.
Recommended Hindi treatment: Use the established baseline new_birth rendering नया जन्म (never a literal “again-birth” calque), reinforced with the qualifier “आत्मिक” (spiritual) if needed for clarity — नया जन्म देनेवाला धोना (a washing that gives new birth) — and mandate a translator note on every occurrence distinguishing this once-for-all, Spirit-wrought, non-repeatable new birth from the cyclical rebirth (पुनर्जन्म) of Hindu/Buddhist reincarnation doctrine. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence, no exceptions.
Titus 3:6
“…whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐξέχεεν | execheen | ”poured out” | ἐκχέω, to pour out abundantly (cf. Acts 2:17-18 quoting Joel — Pentecost language) | “poured out,” “lavished” | The Spirit’s giving is generous, personal, and abundant — not a metered transaction or a force channeled by ritual technique. | उंडेल दिया (uṇḍela diyā) | Medium (new entry) — must retain the Spirit as a personal divine gift given by a personal God, not an impersonal energy/shakti “poured” like a substance; guards against baseline power_of_god caution against शक्ति. |
| πλουσίως | plousiōs | ”richly/abundantly” | generosity of the gift | ”richly,” “abundantly,” “generously” | Emphasizes the lavishness of grace, matching 2:11’s universal scope. | भरपूर मात्रा में (bharapūra mātrā meṅ) | Low |
| διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν | dia Iēsou Christou tou sōtēros hēmōn | ”through Jesus Christ our Savior” | [σωτήρ, see 2:13 entry] | “through Jesus Christ our Savior” | Third and final application of the Savior-title-sharing device: the Spirit is poured out through the same person named “our great God and Savior” in 2:13. | हमारे उद्धारकर्ता यीशु मसीह के द्वारा (hamāre uddhārakartā Yīśu Masīha ke dvārā) | Critical [TM: reused rendering, must match 2:13/3:4 exactly] |
Titus 3:7
“…so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs, having the hope of eternal life.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δικαιωθέντες | dikaiōthentes | ”having been justified” | [TM: reused, justification, धर्मी ठहराया जाना, Critical] | “having been justified” | Forensic declaration of righteous status — never abbreviated to mere pardon. | धर्मी ठहराए जाकर (dharmī ṭaharāe jākara) | Critical [TM: reused, exact compound phrase mandatory] |
| τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι | tē ekeinou chariti | ”by his grace” | [TM: reused, grace, अनुग्रह, High] | “by his grace” | The instrumental means of justification, explicitly grace (not works, completing v.5’s exclusion). | उसके अनुग्रह से (usake anugraha se) | High [TM: reused] |
| κληρονόμοι γενηθῶμεν | klēronomoi genēthōmen | ”might become heirs” | [TM: reused, heir, वारिस, Medium — from Galatians baseline] | “become heirs,” “might be made heirs” | Inheritance-status flows from justification by grace, not from earned family merit (parallels the baseline heir caution against merit-earned inheritance readings, e.g. dutiful family service in Indian custom). | वारिस बनें (vārisa baneṅ) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| κατ᾽ ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίου | kat’ elpida zōēs aiōniou | ”according to the hope of eternal life” | [ἐλπίς see Ch.1 entry; ζωὴ αἰώνιος TM: reused, eternal_life, अनन्त जीवन, High] | “hope of eternal life” | Closes the letter’s inclusio begun at 1:2. Eternal life remains a gift-hope grounded in God’s promise, never liberation-immortality achieved through merit. | अनन्त जीवन की आशा के अनुसार (ananta jīvana kī āśā ke anusāra) | High [TM: reused eternal_life; ἐλπίς new entry, Medium] |
Titus 3:8
“The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are good and profitable for people.”
| Original | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | Pistos ho logos | ”faithful/trustworthy is the word” | a fixed Pastoral-Epistles formula marking an authoritative, reliable summary statement (recurring 1 Tim 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11) | “this is a trustworthy saying,” “the saying is faithful” | Marks 3:4-7 as a settled creedal/confessional summary of the gospel — not Paul’s personal opinion but received, authoritative teaching. | यह वचन विश्वासयोग्य है (yaha vacana viśvāsayogya hai) | Medium (new entry) — विश्वास [TM: reused, faith family]; flag for cross-document consistency if other Pastoral Epistles are later added to this curriculum, since the same formula recurs there. |
| διαβεβαιοῦσθαι | diabebaiousthai | ”to insist confidently/affirm strongly” | to speak with strong confident assertion | ”insist on,” “speak confidently of,” “affirm strongly” | Titus is to teach these truths with full confidence, not tentatively. | दृढ़ता से कहना (dṛḍhatā se kahanā) | Low |
| φροντίζωσιν | phrontizōsin | ”may be careful/intent” | to be thoughtfully concerned about, give careful attention to | ”be careful to,” “be intent on,” “be concerned to” | Deliberate, attentive pursuit of good works — not incidental or accidental. | ध्यान रखें (dhyāna rakheṅ) | Low |
| καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι | kalōn ergōn proistasthai | ”to devote themselves to good works” | προΐστημι, to engage in, to be devoted to, to practice diligently | ”devote themselves to good works,” “engage in good works” | Final restatement of the letter’s good-works refrain, now explicitly as the fruit and outcome of belief (“those who have believed God”), never its precondition. | भले कामों में लगे रहें (bhale kāmoṅ meṅ lage raheṅ) | High [TM: reused, good_works entry — काम, never कर्म] |
| οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷ | hoi pepisteukotes theō | ”those who have believed God” | [TM: reused, faith/believe family, विश्वास, High] | “those who have believed God,” “believers” | The sequence is fixed: belief precedes and grounds the pursuit of good works, not the reverse. | जिन्होंने परमेश्वर पर विश्वास किया है (jinhoṅne Parameśvara para viśvāsa kiyā hai) | High [TM: reused] |
| καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις | kala kai ōphelima tois anthrōpois | ”good and profitable/beneficial to people” | ὠφέλιμος = beneficial, advantageous | ”good and profitable for people,” “good and useful to everyone” | Practical, this-worldly benefit is not opposed to spiritual truth — sound doctrine issues in tangible social good. | अच्छे और मनुष्यों के लिये लाभदायक (acche aura manuṣyoṅ ke liye lābhadāyaka) | Low (new entry) |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Whole-Book Study
Chapter 1 (Titus 1:1–16)
Chapter 1 introduces Paul’s greeting (1:1–4), the qualifications for elders/overseers (1:5–9, a distinct curriculum doctrine), and a rebuke of false teachers (1:10–16). None of this range overlaps the core passage; all terms below are new to this analysis.
1:1–4 — Greeting and apostolic identity
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Servant of God δοῦλος θεοῦ doulos theou slave/bondservant of God | ”servant of God,” “slave of God” | Paul’s self-identification frames all subsequent authority as derived from total ownership by God, not self-appointed status. | परमेश्वर का दास (Parameśvara kā dāsa) | Medium [TM: reused, slavery family] |
| Apostle ἀπόστολος apostolos [TM: reused, प्रेरित, Medium] | “apostle” | Delegated, sent authority. | प्रेरित (prerita) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| Elect (of God) ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ eklektōn theou God’s chosen ones | ”God’s elect,” “God’s chosen” | [TM: reused, election family, परमेश्वर का चुनाव, High] — Paul’s ministry serves the faith of God’s sovereignly chosen people. | परमेश्वर के चुने हुए लोग (Parameśvara ke cune hue loga) | High [TM: reused] |
| Knowledge of the truth ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας epignōsin alētheias precise/full knowledge of the truth | ”knowledge of the truth,” “full knowledge of truth” | Objectively revealed apostolic truth to be known relationally, not liberating self-realization attained through spiritual insight. | सत्य का ज्ञान (satya kā jñāna) | High (new entry) — ज्ञान (jñāna) carries strong Advaita Vedanta connotations of liberating gnosis attained through one’s own spiritual practice/insight (jñāna-mārga). Must be anchored by context as revealed, apostolic, relational truth received by faith — parallel caution to the baseline known_by_god entry (“known BY God,” not self-attained jñāna). |
| Godliness εὐσέβεια / εὐσεβῶς eusebeia reverent piety toward God, godly character | ”godliness,” “piety” | See dedicated treatment: this is one of the letter’s most frequent and theologically loaded recurring terms (1:1; 2:12; cf. 1:12’s ἀσέβειαν, ungodliness). | भक्ति (bhakti) | High (new entry) — भक्ति is the established BSI Hindi rendering, but it is also the primary term for Hindu devotional religion (bhakti-mārga, devotional love toward a chosen personal deity as one of the three classical paths to liberation, alongside jñāna and karma marga). Every occurrence requires a translator note distinguishing NT godliness (reverent, Spirit-produced Christlike character flowing from grace, cf. 2:12) from generic devotional bhakti toward any deity. Flag for theologian review. |
| Promised ἐπηγγείλατο epēngeilato [TM: reused, promise, प्रतिज्ञा, High] | “promised” | God’s unconditional pledge, prior to and outranking any human merit. | प्रतिज्ञा की (pratijñā kī) | High [TM: reused] |
| God who never lies ὁ ἀψευδὴς θεός ho apseudēs theos the God who does not lie | ”the God who never lies,” “God, who cannot lie” | God’s own truthfulness grounds the reliability of the hope of eternal life — connects to the “trustworthy saying” formula at 3:8. | परमेश्वर जो झूठ नहीं बोलता (Parameśvara jo jhūṭha nahīṅ bolatā) | Low-Medium |
| Manifested (his word) ἐφανέρωσεν ephanerōsen made visible/revealed | ”manifested,” “made known,” “revealed” | A distinct verb from ἐπιφαίνω (2:11 family) but conceptually related — God’s word disclosed at the appointed time through preaching. | प्रकट किया (prakaṭa kiyā) | Medium (new entry) — keep visually/lexically distinct from the ἐπιφαίνω family where possible, though both share प्रकट root; note the distinction in any glossary entry. |
| Proclamation/preaching κήρυγμα kērygma the message preached, the act of heralding | ”preaching,” “proclamation,” “message” | The authorized public announcement entrusted to Paul; connects to baseline evangelism/mission doctrines. | प्रचार (pracāra) | Low-Medium [TM: term-family reused from mission] |
| Genuine child γνησίῳ τέκνῳ gnēsiō teknō true/legitimate child (spiritual, of Titus) | “true child,” “genuine son [in the faith]“ | Titus’s spiritual (not biological) sonship to Paul in the common faith. | सच्चे पुत्र (sacce putra) | Low |
1:5–9 — Qualifications for Elders
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elder πρεσβύτερος presbyteros an elder (church office) | “elder,” “presbyter” | KEY doctrine term. The office Titus is to establish “in every town” (1:5) — the same office described with the synonymous title ἐπίσκοπος in 1:7. | प्राचीन (prācīn) | High (new entry) — प्राचीन is the established Hindi Christian term for the church office. Must be distinguished from (a) generic secular “old/elderly person” (बुज़ुर्ग), and (b) Hindu village-panchayat elder authority or guru-veneration models where an elder’s authority is unquestionable by virtue of age/lineage rather than by meeting the specific moral/doctrinal qualifications Paul lists (1:6-9). Distinguish also from πρεσβύτης (2:2, “older man,” non-office) — see below. |
| Appoint καταστήσῃς katastēsēs to establish, put in place, appoint to office | ”appoint,” “put in charge,” “install” | Formal ecclesial installation into recognized office, not informal social deference. | नियुक्त करना (niyukta karanā) | Low (new entry) |
| Overseer ἐπίσκοπος episkopos one who watches over/superintends | ”overseer,” “bishop” | Used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος in 1:5-7 for the same local-church office — NT usage predates later hierarchical “bishop over many churches” development. | अध्यक्ष (adhyakṣa) | High (new entry) — Must be read as functionally identical to प्राचीन (elder) in this text, describing shepherding oversight of a single local congregation — not a monarchical bishop ranking over multiple congregations (anachronistic later ecclesiology), and not a guru-figure whose authority rests on personal charisma or spiritual attainment rather than the listed moral qualifications. Flag for theologian review given long church-historical debate over this term’s referent. |
| God’s steward θεοῦ οἰκονόμον theou oikonomon manager/administrator of God’s household | ”God’s steward,” “manager of God’s household” | [TM: term-family reused — baseline guardians_stewards, भण्डारी, Galatians 4:1-2] The elder/overseer manages what belongs to God, not a personal domain. | परमेश्वर का भण्डारी (Parameśvara kā bhaṇḍārī) | Medium [TM: reused] |
| Blameless ἀνέγκλητος anenklētos above reproach, not open to accusation | ”blameless,” “above reproach” | Repeated qualification standard (1:6,7) — moral credibility as a precondition for spiritual authority. | निर्दोष (nirdoṣa) | Medium (new entry) |
| Husband of one wife μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ mias gynaikos anēr a one-woman man | ”husband of one wife,” “faithful to one wife” | Marital fidelity as a qualification; handle with pastoral sensitivity given diverse marital histories in convert populations. | एक ही पत्नी का पति (eka hī patnī kā pati) | Medium — flag for native speaker review given pastoral sensitivity around this qualification in diverse convert contexts. |
| Insubordinate/rebellious ἀνυπότακτα anypotakta not-submissive, unruly | ”insubordinate,” “rebellious,” “disobedient” | Direct antonym of ὑποτάσσω (3:1 etc.) — the submission doctrine’s negative pole, applied here to disqualifying children’s conduct and to false teachers (1:10). | अनाज्ञाकारी / अधीन न रहनेवाला (anājñākārī) | Medium (antonym of key submission entry) |
| Self-controlled / disciplined virtue cluster σώφρονα, δίκαιον, ὅσιον, ἐγκρατῆ sōphrona, dikaion, hosion, egkratē self-controlled, just, devout/holy, self-disciplined | ”self-controlled, upright, holy, disciplined” | A cluster of overlapping “holiness/self-mastery” virtues required of elders; ὅσιος is distinct from ἅγιος (holy, cultic/relational set-apartness, baseline पवित्र) — it denotes personal devout piety. ἐγκράτεια (self-control) is also one of the baseline’s nine Fruit of the Spirit qualities (Galatians 5:23). | संयमी, न्यायी, भक्त, आत्मसंयमी (saṃyamī, nyāyī, bhakta, ātma-saṃyamī) | Medium — note terminological overlap risk between ὅσιος (भक्त/धार्मिक) and ἅγιος (पवित्र, TM); glossary should record the distinction so translators do not collapse both into पवित्र. ἐγκράτεια must be kept consistent with the baseline फल-of-the-Spirit self-control quality, distinct from Hindu ascetic brahmacharya self-mastery pursued for liberation. |
| Elder vice-list (disqualifying) αὐθάδη, ὀργίλον, πάροινον, πλήκτην, αἰσχροκερδῆ authadē, orgilon, paroinon, plēktēn, aischrokerdē arrogant, quick-tempered, drunkard, violent, greedy for gain | ”arrogant, quick-tempered, a drunkard, violent, greedy for gain” | A disqualifying vice-list contrasted with the virtue-list — standard Hellenistic moral-catalogue genre; low individual theological risk but collectively define unfitness for spiritual authority.
| Holding fast the trustworthy word / sound teaching τοῦ πιστοῦ λόγου…τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ tou pistou logou…tē didaskalia tē hygiainousē the trustworthy word…the healthy/sound teaching | ”the trustworthy message…sound doctrine” | KEY doctrine term for “Sound Doctrine.” ὑγιαίνω = “to be healthy” (medical metaphor); ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία = teaching that produces spiritual health, as opposed to teaching that is diseased/corrupting. First of five occurrences in Titus (1:9,13; 2:1,2,8). | विश्वासयोग्य वचन…खरी शिक्षा (viśvāsayogya vacana…kharī śikṣā) | High (new entry) — खरी शिक्षा (“sound/genuine teaching”) is proposed as the primary rendering; स्वस्थ शिक्षा (“healthy teaching,” literally preserving Paul’s health metaphor) is a viable alternative that some reviewers may prefer for retaining the vivid body-health image. Whichever is chosen, it MUST be used identically at all five occurrences (1:9,13; 2:1,2,8) — this is the letter’s central positive doctrinal-content term, paired throughout with the “good works” refrain to form the curriculum’s core doctrine “Sound Doctrine and Good Works.” |
| Rebuke those who contradict τοὺς ἀντιλέγοντας ἐλέγχειν tous antilegontas elenchein [ἐλέγχω, see 2:15 entry] | “rebuke those who contradict/oppose” | The elder’s teaching authority includes doctrinal correction of opponents. | विरोध करनेवालों को उलाहना देना (virodha karanevāloṅ ko ulāhanā denā) | Medium [term reused from 2:15] |
1:10–16 — False teachers and the corrupted conscience
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Empty talkers / deceivers ματαιολόγοι, φρεναπάται mataiologoi, phrenapatai vain/futile talkers, mind-deceivers | ”empty talkers,” “deceivers” | Descriptive polemic against the false teachers, largely from the circumcision party [TM: circumcision, खतना, Medium, reused]. | बकवादी, धोखा देनेवाले (bakavādī) | Low |
| Ruining whole households ὅλους οἴκους ἀνατρέπουσιν holous oikous anatrepousin overturning entire households | ”upsetting whole families,” “ruining households” | False teaching has concrete social/familial destructive consequences, not merely abstract doctrinal error. | पूरे घरानों को बिगाड़ना (pūre gharānoṅ ko bigāṛanā) | Low |
| Shameful gain αἰσχροῦ κέρδους χάριν aischrou kerdous charin for the sake of shameful/dishonest profit | ”for shameful gain,” “for dishonest profit” | Financial motive behind false teaching — echoes the elder-disqualification vice αἰσχροκερδής (1:7). | अशुद्ध लाभ के लिये (aśuddha lābha ke liye) | Low |
| Myths μύθοις mythois myths, fables | ”myths,” “fables” | KEY term for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies.” Here specifically “Jewish myths” (Ἰουδαϊκοῖς μύθοις) — legendary/speculative religious narrative contrasted with revealed truth (ἀλήθεια). Recurs conceptually at 3:9 (γενεαλογίας). | कल्पित कहानियाँ (kalpita kahāniyāṅ) | Medium-High (new entry) — In the Indian context “myth” readily maps onto itihāsa/purāṇa narrative traditions held sacred within Hinduism (Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata, Purāṇas). The source text’s target is specifically “Jewish myths and human commandments” (1:14), not a generalized claim about all non-Christian religious narrative. Render descriptively and contextually anchored (“यहूदी कल्पित कहानियों,” Jewish fables) rather than as a bare unqualified “myths,” to avoid the appearance of a blanket dismissal of Hindu sacred narrative that the source text does not itself make. Handle with the same pastoral care as the baseline idolatry entry’s caution. |
| Commandments of men ἐντολαῖς ἀνθρώπων entolais anthrōpōn human-originated commands | ”commandments of men,” “human rules” | Human religious tradition contrasted with divine revelation — parallel to but distinct from baseline law_as_guardian/Torah discussions (this is human tradition, not Mosaic law). | मनुष्यों की आज्ञाएँ (manuṣyoṅ kī ājñāeṅ) | Low |
| Turning away from the truth ἀποστρεφομένων τὴν ἀλήθειαν apostrephomenōn tēn alētheian [ἀλήθεια, see 1:1 entry family] | “turning away from the truth” | Objective, singular truth abandoned in favor of speculation — resonates with baseline truth_of_the_gospel caution against pluralist “one perspective among many” softening. | सत्य से मुँह मोड़ना (satya se muṅha moṛanā) | Medium (term-family reused) |
| Pure / defiled καθαρὰ…καθαροῖς / μεμιαμμένοις kathara…katharois / memiammenois clean/pure…defiled/polluted | ”pure…to the pure”; “defiled” | Reworks ritual purity language (καθαρός family, echoing 2:14’s καθαρίσῃ) into a statement about inward moral/spiritual condition — “to the pure all things are pure,” a deliberately paradoxical proverb undercutting ritual-purity legalism itself. | शुद्ध…शुद्धों के लिये / अशुद्ध किए हुए (śuddha…aśuddha kie hue) | Medium-High — Ironically, this verse itself argues AGAINST a ritual-purity framework, making it a valuable teaching opportunity for Hindu-background readers steeped in purity/impurity (śuddha/aśuddha) categories, but also a passage that could be badly misread if the paradox is lost; requires careful contextual framing/note. |
| Mind and conscience νοῦς…συνείδησις nous…syneidēsis mind…conscience | ”mind and conscience” | συνείδησις [TM: reused, conscience, विवेक, High] — moral awareness before God, corrupted by unbelief; νοῦς (mind) is a new but low-risk companion term. | मन…विवेक (mana…viveka) | High (विवेक TM: reused); मन new, Low |
| Profess to know God but deny by works High] | “profess to know God, but deny him by their works” | The confession/works gap — inverse warning to 3:8’s confession-then-good-works pattern; false profession is exposed by conduct. |
| Disqualified / unfit ἀδόκιμοι adokimoi failing the test, unqualified | ”disqualified,” “unfit,” “worthless” | Ironic reversal of the elder-qualification vocabulary of 1:5-9 — these false teachers fail every test of fitness for good works. | अयोग्य / परखे जाकर निकम्मे (ayogya) | Low |
Chapter 2 (Titus 2:1–10)
Verses 2:11–15 belong to the core passage and are treated in full above; this section covers only 2:1–10.
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sound doctrine τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ tē hygiainousē didaskalia [see full entry, Ch.1 §1:9] | “sound doctrine” | Second occurrence (2:1); Titus’s own teaching must match this standard before he instructs the various household groups. | खरी शिक्षा (kharī śikṣā) | High [term reused from 1:9] |
| Older men πρεσβύτας presbytas older/elderly men (age, not office) | “older men” | Distinct from πρεσβύτερος (church office, 1:5) though same root — a social-age category addressed with its own virtue-list (sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith/love/endurance). | बूढ़े पुरुष / बुज़ुर्ग पुरुष (būṛhe puruṣa) | Medium (new entry) — glossary must record the elder-office vs. older-man distinction explicitly, since both derive from the same Greek root and a Hindi translator could conflate प्राचीन (elder-office) with this simple age-category term. |
| Sober-minded, dignified, endurance νηφαλίους, σεμνούς, ὑπομονῇ nēphalious, semnous, hypomonē sober, dignified/respectable, endurance/patience | ”sober-minded, dignified…endurance” | Virtue-cluster for older men; ὑπομονή (endurance) recurs as a broader NT perseverance concept. | संयमी, गंभीर, धीरज (saṃyamī, gambhīra, dhīraja) | Low |
| Sound in faith, love, endurance ὑγιαίνοντας τῇ πίστει τῇ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ὑπομονῇ hygiainontas tē pistei tē agapē tē hypomonē [ὑγιαίνω, health-metaphor family; πίστις TM reused; ἀγάπη new] | “sound in faith, love, and steadfastness” | Extends the “health” metaphor from doctrine (1:9) to personal character — a person, not only teaching, can be “healthy” or “sick” in faith. | विश्वास, प्रेम, और धीरज में खरे (viśvāsa, prema, aura dhīraja meṅ khare) | Medium — विश्वास [TM: reused High]; प्रेम new entry, Low-Medium (see below). |
| Love ἀγάπη agapē selfless, willed love | ”love” | A new baseline-level entry — general Christian love, not previously given a standalone TM entry (only baseline brotherly_love, philadelphia-specific, exists). Frequent in Titus 2:2,4. | प्रेम (prema) | Low-Medium (new entry) — established, low-collision term, but distinct from baseline brotherly_love (भाईचारे का प्रेम, philadelphia-specific) and should be recorded separately to avoid confusion between generic ἀγάπη and the specific philadelphia term. |
| Older women πρεσβύτιδας presbytidas older/elderly women | ”older women” | Parallel age-category to πρεσβύτας, given its own virtue instructions and a teaching role toward younger women (2:3-4) — notable early instance of women explicitly commissioned to teach other women. | बूढ़ी स्त्रियाँ / बुज़ुर्ग स्त्रियाँ (būṛhī striyāṅ) | Low (new entry) |
| Reverent in behavior ἱεροπρεπεῖς hieroprepeis befitting sacred things, reverent | ”reverent in behavior,” “as is fitting for holy women” | Contains the ἱερός (“sacred/priestly”) root — describes dignified, godly demeanor. | पवित्रता के योग्य / भक्तिमय स्वभाव (pavitratā ke yogya) | Medium (new entry) — could evoke priestly/ritual propriety (cf. Hindu pujari ritual decorum); must be read as general godly dignity of character, not ritual performance. |
| Not slanderers, not slaves to wine μὴ διαβόλους μὴ οἴνῳ πεπολωμένας mē diabolous mē oinō pepōlōmenas not slanderers, not enslaved to wine | ”not slanderers, not slaves to much wine” | διάβολος here used adjectivally (“slanderer”), same root as “the devil” (ὁ διάβολος) elsewhere — worth noting the wordplay for teaching purposes, though the sense here is simply “slanderer.” | निन्दा करनेवाली नहीं, दाखमधु की दासी नहीं (nindā karanevālī nahīṅ) | Low |
| Teachers of good / train the young women καλοδιδασκάλους…σωφρονίζωσιν τὰς νέας kalodidaskalous…sōphronizōsin tas neas teachers of what is good…train/counsel the young women to be sensible | ”teachers of good…to train young women” | Establishes intergenerational discipleship structure within the church, parallel to grace’s own “training” (παιδεύω, 2:12) function — older women mirror grace’s pedagogical role at the human level. | अच्छी बातें सिखानेवाली…जवान स्त्रियों को समझाएँ (acchī bāteṅ sikhānevālī) | Low-Medium |
| Loving husbands, loving children, pure, working at home φιλάνδρους, φιλοτέκνους, ἁγνάς, οἰκουργοὺς philandrous, philoteknous, hagnas, oikourgous husband-loving, child-loving, chaste/pure, home-working | ”to love their husbands and children, to be pure, working at home” | Domestic virtue-cluster for younger wives; ἁγνός (“pure/chaste”) is a distinct purity-family term from both ἅγιος (holy, TM पवित्र) and καθαρός (clean, 2:14/1:15). | अपने पतियों और बच्चों से प्रेम करनेवाली, पवित्र/सतीत्व, घर के काम में लगी रहनेवाली (pavitra/satītva) | Medium (new entry, ἁγνός specifically) — three overlapping purity-family Greek terms (ἅγιος/καθαρός/ἁγνός) risk collapsing into one Hindi word (पवित्र or शुद्ध) if not carefully distinguished in the glossary; ἁγνός here carries a specifically sexual/marital-fidelity nuance that सतीत्व (chastity) captures more precisely than generic पवित्र. |
| Submissive to their own husbands ὑποτασσομένας τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν hypotassomenas tois idiois andrasin [ὑποτάσσω, see 3:1 full entry] | “submissive to their own husbands” | Second of three ὑποτάσσω occurrences (2:5, 2:9, 3:1) — the domestic instance, requiring the same care regarding voluntary God-ordered submission versus caste/gender-hierarchical subordination. | अपने-अपने पतियों के अधीन रहनेवाली (apane-apane patiyoṅ ke adhīna rahanevālī) | High [term reused from 3:1 entry — flag every occurrence] |
| So that the word of God may not be reviled ἵνα μὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ βλασφημῆται hina mē ho logos tou theou blasphēmētai [βλασφημέω, see 3:2 entry] | “so that the word of God may not be reviled/maligned” | The practical rationale throughout ch.2’s household instructions: consistent godly conduct protects the gospel’s public credibility — echoes 2:10’s κοσμέω (adorn) motif. | ताकि परमेश्वर के वचन की निन्दा न हो (tāki Parameśvara ke vacana kī nindā na ho) | Medium (term-family reused) |
| Example/pattern τύπον typon model, pattern, example | ”example,” “pattern,” “model” | Titus himself is to be a living pattern of the sound teaching he proclaims (2:7) — doctrine and life inseparable. | आदर्श (ādarśa) | Low (new entry) |
| Integrity, dignity, sound speech beyond reproach ἀφθορίαν, σεμνότητα, λόγον ὑγιῆ, ἀκατάγνωστον aphthorian, semnoteta, logon hygiē, akatagnōston incorruptibility, dignity, healthy/sound speech, not condemnable | ”integrity, dignity, sound speech that cannot be condemned” | λόγον ὑγιῆ extends the health-metaphor (ὑγιαίνω family) from doctrine to personal speech. | खराई, गंभीरता, खरी बात, निर्दोष (kharāī, gambhīratā, kharī bāta, nirdoṣa) | Medium (health-metaphor family term reused/extended) |
| Slaves submissive to their masters δούλους…δεσπόταις ὑποτάσσεσθαι doulous…despotais hypotassesthai [ὑποτάσσω, see 3:1; δοῦλος TM reused] | “slaves…submissive to their masters” | Third ὑποτάσσω occurrence — extends submission doctrine into the master-slave household relationship, the most socially sensitive of the three contexts for a contemporary Indian audience given caste-labor dynamics. | दास…अपने स्वामियों के अधीन (dāsa…apane svāmiyoṅ ke adhīna) | High [term reused from 3:1; flag every occurrence] |
| Master δεσπότης despotēs lord/master (of a household or slave) | “master,” “lord [of a servant]“ | A human household-authority title, distinct in referent from θεός/κύριος. | स्वामी (svāmī) | Medium (new entry, important caution) — The baseline lord entry explicitly rejects स्वामी as a rendering for κύριος/God specifically because of its strong association with Hindu guru/ascetic titles (e.g., “Swami” as a common form of address for Hindu religious teachers and renunciants). Here स्वामी is being used for a different, human referent (a slave’s earthly master) where it is contextually appropriate — but translators and reviewers must be alert that the same Hindi word carries this dual baseline-sensitive history, and the surrounding context must make unmistakably clear that this is a human employer, never a divine or guru title. |
| Well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering εὐαρέστους, μὴ ἀντιλέγοντας, μὴ νοσφιζομένους euarestous, mē antilegontas, mē nosphizomenous pleasing well, not contradicting, not stealing/embezzling | ”well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering” | Practical household-servant virtue list. | प्रसन्न करनेवाले, बहस न करनेवाले, चोरी न करनेवाले (prasanna karanevāle) | Low |
| Showing all good faith / trustworthiness πᾶσαν πίστιν ἐνδεικνυμένους ἀγαθήν pasan pistin endeiknymenous agathēn demonstrating all good faith/trustworthiness | ”showing all good faith,” “demonstrating complete trustworthiness” | πίστις here in its “trustworthiness/faithfulness” sense (distinct from but related to saving faith), applied to slaves’ workplace conduct. | पूरी सच्चाई और विश्वासयोग्यता दिखानेवाले (pūrī saccāī aura viśvāsayogyatā dikhānevāle) | Medium [term-family reused, विश्वास] |
| Adorn the doctrine τὴν διδασκαλίαν…κοσμῶσιν tēn didaskalian…kosmōsin to adorn/beautify the teaching | ”adorn the doctrine,” “make the teaching attractive” | κοσμέω, “to adorn” (root of “cosmetic,” “cosmos”) — a slave’s godly conduct makes the gospel attractive and credible to outside observers; ties the Sound-Doctrine and Good-Works doctrines together explicitly at the household level. | शिक्षा को शोभा दें (śikṣā ko śobhā deṅ) | Medium (new entry) — a vivid, positive image worth preserving carefully; must not be flattened to a bland “make the teaching look good,” losing the “beautify/adorn” nuance. |
Chapter 3 (Titus 3:9–15)
Verses 3:1–8 belong to the core passage and are treated in full above; this section covers only 3:9–15.
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foolish controversies μωρὰς…ζητήσεις mōras…zētēseis foolish investigations/debates | ”foolish controversies,” “foolish disputes” | KEY term for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies.” ζήτησις (investigation/debate) becomes destructive when directed at speculative, unprofitable questions rather than the “sound doctrine” (ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία) Titus is elsewhere commanded to teach and defend. | मूर्खतापूर्ण विवाद (mūrkhatāpūrṇa vivāda) | Medium-High (new entry) — Must be carefully distinguished from the doctrinal rebuking/refuting of false teaching that Titus is repeatedly commanded to do (1:9,13; 2:15) — Paul is not counseling avoidance of all theological engagement, only speculative, divisive, unprofitable debate. Nuance required so this term does not become a blanket excuse to avoid necessary doctrinal correction. |
| Genealogies γενεαλογίας genealogias genealogies, lineage-records | ”genealogies” | Speculative ancestral/lineage disputation, likely tied to Jewish-myth speculation (cf. 1:14); low independent theological weight but part of the “avoid” list. | वंशावली विवाद (vaṅśāvalī vivāda) | Low (new entry) |
| Quarrels and legal battles ἔρεις καὶ μάχας νομικὰς ereis kai machas nomikas strife/quarrels and law-related fights | ”quarrels and quarrels about the law” | Disputes specifically over Mosaic-law interpretation (νομικός, law-related) — echoes ch.1’s circumcision-party controversy (1:10,14) and reinforces the “avoid divisive controversies” doctrine with a specific referent: legalistic disputation, not doctrine itself. | झगड़े और व्यवस्था के विषय में वाद-विवाद (jhagaṛe aura vyavasthā ke viṣaya meṅ vāda-vivāda) | Medium (term-family reused, व्यवस्था) |
| Unprofitable and worthless ἀνωφελεῖς καὶ μάταιοι anōpheleis kai mataioi not beneficial, futile/empty | ”unprofitable and worthless,” “useless and futile” | Direct antonym-contrast with 3:8’s ὠφέλιμα (“profitable”) — a deliberate literary bracket around the whole passage: good works are profitable (ὠφέλιμα, 3:8), divisive disputes are unprofitable (ἀνωφελεῖς, 3:9). | निष्फल और व्यर्थ (niṣphala aura vyartha) | Low (new entry) |
| Divisive/factious person αἱρετικὸν ἄνθρωπον hairetikon anthrōpon a person characterized by factions/divisions | ”a divisive person,” “a person who causes divisions” | KEY term. Root of the later technical term “heretic,” but here the sense is factious/divisive — a person who fractures church unity through persistent quarrelsomeness, addressed pastorally (two warnings, then avoidance) rather than through a later doctrinal heresy-trial framework. | विभाजन करनेवाला / फूट डालनेवाला (vibhājana karanevālā) | High (new entry) — Must NOT be rendered with a generic “heretic” term implying wrong-religion status (which would risk importing a धर्म-based religious-identity framing foreign to Paul’s actual, narrower pastoral concern with intra-church factiousness). Flag for theologian review given the term’s later loaded church-historical usage (heresy trials), which should not be retrojected onto this pastoral-discipline text. |
| Warning, admonition νουθεσίαν nouthesian admonition, warning | ”warning,” “admonition” | Part of the graduated, patient pastoral-discipline process (two warnings before avoidance) — models restorative rather than punitive church discipline, consistent with the baseline restore_gently tone (Galatians 6:1). | चितावनी (citāvanī) | Low |
| Self-condemned αὐτοκατάκριτος autokatakritos self-condemning, condemned by his own [conduct] | “self-condemned” | The divisive person’s own persistent behavior, not an external verdict alone, constitutes the condemnation. | अपने आप को दोषी ठहरानेवाला (apane āpa ko doṣī ṭharānevālā) | Low (new entry) |
| Devote themselves to good works / not be unfruitful καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι…ἵνα μὴ ὦσιν ἄκαρποι kalōn ergōn proistasthai…hina mē ōsin akarpoi devote to good works…so they are not unfruitful | ”devote themselves to good works…so as not to be unfruitful” | Final restatement of the good-works refrain (3:14), paired with ἄκαρπος (“unfruitful”) — a fruit-bearing metaphor that must be handled with the same care as the baseline fruit_of_the_spirit caution against कर्म-फल collision, even though the underlying Greek word here (καρπός) is not the identical construction. | भले कामों में लगे रहें ताकि निष्फल न रहें (bhale kāmoṅ meṅ lage raheṅ tāki niṣphala na raheṅ) | High (good_works entry reused) + Medium (ἄκαρπος, new entry — avoid फल-based phrasing that could evoke कर्म-फल merit-accumulation, even in this negated form) |
| Grace be with you all Ἡ χάρις μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν hē charis meta pantōn hymōn [TM: reused, grace, अनुग्रह, High] | “Grace be with you all” | Standard epistolary benediction closing the letter; retains the universal “all” (πάντων) scope consistent with 2:11’s πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις. | अनुग्रह तुम सब के साथ रहे (anugraha tuma saba ke sātha rahe) | High [TM: reused] |
Note on 3:12–13: Proper names (Ἀρτεμᾶν/Artemas, Τυχικόν/Tychicus, Ζηνᾶν/Zenas, Ἀπολλῶν/Apollos, Νικόπολιν/Nicopolis) and the minor occupational term νομικός (“lawyer,” Ζηνᾶν τὸν νομικόν, “Zenas the lawyer”) carry no independent doctrinal risk. Use established Hindi Bible transliterations per the baseline transliteration standard; no new glossary entries required.
