Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Zephaniah (English → Hindi)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across all three chapters of Zephaniah, with the core passage (3:14-17) terms marked accordingly. Terms already fixed by the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE REUSE] and MUST NOT be altered. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW] and require the same enforcement discipline going forward once approved.

Risk tiers follow the baseline definitions exactly: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

New Foundational Term: The Divine Name

Term IDHebrew (Translit.)Hindi RenderingRiskDoctrineRef.Notes
yhwhיהוה (YHWH)यहोवा (Yahovā)CriticalAll four core doctrinesThroughout (30+ occurrences)[NEW] Established BSI Old Version rendering of the Tetragrammaton, distinct from परमेश्वर (Elohim/theos, baseline) and प्रभु (Adonai/Kyrios, baseline). This three-way distinction (यहोवा / परमेश्वर / प्रभु) must be maintained consistently; collapsing यहोवा into परमेश्वर erases the personal covenant-name emphasis central to Zephaniah’s rhetoric (“YHWH your God,” “YHWH your King,” 3:15,17).

Core Passage Terms (Zephaniah 3:14–17)

MediumDay of the Lord (reversal)3:14[NEW] Same root as the war-alarm sense used earlier (1:16); translator note distinguishing senses required.

CriticalDay of the Lord; foreshadows Lordship of Christ3:15[NEW] Direct apposition — YHWH himself is King, not a separate human ruler. Consistency point with baseline kingship_of_jesus (यीशु का राजत्व) for future NT cross-reference.
CriticalDay of the Lord; God’s Joyful Love3:5, 3:15, 3:17[NEW] MUST be rendered identically at all three occurrences to preserve the chiastic Judge-to-Savior structure.
MediumDay of the Lord (restoration)3:15[NEW]

CriticalGod’s Joyful Love; Day of the Lord as Restoration3:17[NEW] MUST embed उद्धार (baseline salvation root, never मुक्ति/मोक्ष). Warrior imagery (गिब्बोर) risks collision with Hindu divine-warrior-avatar imagery (Rama/Krishna); translator note required clarifying this is YHWH himself, already “in her midst,” not a separate avatar.
CriticalGod’s Joyful Love for His People3:17[NEW] Core doctrinal anchor term. Mandatory theologian review and translator footnote on every occurrence; do not silently resolve.
CriticalGod’s Joyful Love3:17[NEW] Closes the inclusio with sing_aloud (3:14, same रנן root); Hindi rendering must audibly echo the 3:14 rendering.

Critical Risk Terms

Salvation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: NEVER use मुक्ति or मोक्ष — these carry Hindu liberation from samsara meaning. उद्धार = deliverance by God through Christ. In Zephaniah this root is embedded in mighty_savior (3:17, גִּבּוֹר יוֹשִׁיעַ) and must remain the salvation-root shared with all NT vocabulary the learner will later encounter, since ישע is the same root behind the name Yeshua/Jesus.

Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: Remnant and Repentance

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: Never use धर्म. In Zephaniah this OT ethical/practice sense (righteous covenant conduct, 2:3; 3:5) complements without contradicting the NT forensic sense; धर्म remains absolutely forbidden in both senses. Governs do_justice_seek_righteousness_seek_humility and yhwh_righteous_in_her_midst below.

Condemnation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: daṇḍa kī ājñā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Original: מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, judicial sentence, cf. Romans 8:1’s forensic verdict)
Category: Day of the Lord

Inherited from Romans package. Forensic verdict; cross-referenced by judgments_removed (Zephaniah 3:15), which depicts this very verdict being judicially lifted. Consistency with this baseline forensic register is required so 3:15 reads as genuine legal acquittal, not vague sentiment.

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. In Zephaniah this must be kept strictly distinct from the personal covenant name यहोवा (see yhwh below) and from प्रभु (Adonai). Never भगवान. Appears combined with the covenant name in yhwh_your_god (3:17).

Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. In the compound divine title אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה (Zephaniah 1:7) render as प्रभु यहोवा so both title and personal name remain visible; never collapse to a single generic term. स्वामी remains excluded even in footnote glosses on Baal’s ‘lord/master’ double meaning (see baal below), to avoid any accidental echo with YHWH’s own exclusive lordship vocabulary.

Yhwh

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā
Doctrine: Covenant Name of YHWH
Rejected alternatives: परमेश्वर (collapses the personal covenant name into the generic term), प्रभु (collapses the personal name into the Adonai title), ईश्वर, भगवान
Original:
Category: God

[NEW] Established Bible Society of India Old Version rendering of the Tetragrammaton. Used over 30 times in Zephaniah. MUST remain strictly distinct from परमेश्वर (god, Elohim/theos) and प्रभु (lord, Adonai/kyrios) throughout the book; collapsing यहोवा into either erases the personal, relational, covenant-naming force the book exploits deliberately (e.g. ‘YHWH your God,’ ‘YHWH… King of Israel’). This three-way distinction is the single highest-leverage translation control in this curriculum.

Yhwh Your God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā terā Parameśvara
Doctrine: Covenant Name of YHWH
Rejected alternatives: तेरा परमेश्वर (dropping यहोवा loses the personal-name force), यहोवा (alone, dropping the relational possessive)
Original:
Category: God

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:17. Both यहोवा and परमेश्वर must appear together; using only one collapses either the personal-name force or the relational-possessive force, both load-bearing in the verse anchoring the doctrine of God’s Joyful Love.

King Of Israel Yhwh

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Isrāela kā rājā Yahovā
Doctrine: Divine Kingship of YHWH
Rejected alternatives: इस्राएल का एक राजा यहोवा (inserting एक demotes YHWH to one king among several)
Category: God

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:15. Direct apposition — YHWH himself, not a separate human ruler, is Israel’s King. Word order must make this unambiguous; never insert एक, a serious risk given Hindi’s rich vocabulary for revered divine-king figures (e.g. Rama). Cross-reference baseline kingship_of_jesus for NT continuity.

In Your Midst

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: tere/uske bīca meṃ
Doctrine: God’s Presence in the Midst of His People
Rejected alternatives: मध्य में, अंदर, के भीतर (near-synonyms that would fragment the deliberate 3:5/3:15/3:17 chiasm)
Original: בְּקִרְבֵּךְ / בְּקִרְבָּהּ
Category: God

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:5, 3:15, 3:17. MUST be rendered with this exact phrase at all three occurrences to preserve the deliberate chiastic movement from Judge-present-amid-sin (3:5) to Savior-present-amid-restored-joy (3:15, 3:17). Any variation is a structural translation error, not a stylistic choice.

Yhwh Righteous In Her Midst

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā uske bīca meṃ dharmī hai
Doctrine: God’s Presence in the Midst of His People
Category: God

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:5. First occurrence of the in_your_midst chiasm; बीच में must exactly match 3:15 and 3:17. धर्मी reuses the धार्मिकता root, never धर्म.

Day Of The Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā kā dina
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: प्रलय (Hindu cyclical cosmic dissolution), युग-परिवर्तन (yuga-cycle transition), कयामत (Islamic apocalyptic register unsuited to this covenant-specific formula)
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] The book’s central organizing category (1:7,14 and throughout). MUST never be assimilated to Hindu cyclical cosmic-dissolution (pralaya/yuga) concepts, which are impersonal and endlessly repeating. This is a single, personal, morally-grounded, non-recurring divine intervention. Translator note required on first occurrence (1:7); must match that_day_formula rendering exactly.

That Day Formula

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: usa dina
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: तब, उस समय, उस घड़ी (idiomatic variants that would obscure the fixed formula’s recurrence)
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Recurring formula at 1:7,10,14; 2:2-3; 3:8,11,16. Must be rendered identically at every occurrence so the reader recognizes the SAME Day that introduces judgment in ch.1 is the Day that accomplishes restoration at 3:16.

Judgments Removed

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā ne tere viruddha ṭharāe gae daṇḍa kī ājñāoṃ ko dūra kara diyā hai
Doctrine: The Judicial Removal of Condemnation and Fear
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:15. The forensic pivot of the whole book. Must read as a genuine judicial reversal parallel to baseline condemnation (दण्ड की आज्ञा) being lifted, never a vague emotional statement that God ‘feels better.’ Structural hinge of the Judgment-to-Restoration doctrine.

Mighty Savior

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parākramī uddhārakartā
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: अवतार (forbidden per baseline incarnation prohibition, extended by analogy), वीर-अवतार-style Sanskritic heroic-title loan
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:17 (גִּבּוֹר יוֹשִׁיעַ). MUST embed उद्धार (baseline salvation root; never मुक्ति/मोक्ष). The warrior term risks direct collision with Hindu divine-warrior-avatar imagery (Rama/Krishna as Vishnu’s warrior incarnations). Mandatory translator note: this is the SAME यहोवा already declared present ‘in her midst’ (3:15,17), not a separate warrior-deity or dispatched avatar.

God Rejoices Over You

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vaha tujha para harṣita hokara ānanda karegā
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: a static ‘God is pleased’ formula (flattens the active exultation verb)
Category: God’s Joyful Love

Core doctrinal anchor. Must not be flattened into static pleasure-language, and must not be assimilated to Hindu bhakti līlā (a deity’s independent divine play, typically not tied to a specific covenant partner) — this joy is relationally directed ‘over you,’ the specific covenant people.

He Will Quiet You In Love

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vaha apane prema meṃ tujhe śānta karegā
Doctrine: Textual Crux: Divine Silence/Renewal in Love (Zephaniah 3:17)
Rejected alternatives: वह अपने प्रेम में मौन/चुप रहेगा (literal MT alternative, recorded as footnote option, not primary), वह अपने प्रेम में तुझे नया करेगा (minority scholarly emendation, recorded as footnote option, not primary)
Original: יַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:17 (יַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ). Genuine Masoretic Text textual-critical crux (MT ‘be silent’ vs. proposed emendation יְחַדֵּשׁ ‘renew’). Mandatory theologian review and translator footnote naming both readings on every occurrence; never silently resolved in the main rendering.

Exult With Singing

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vaha tujha para gītoṃ ke sātha magana hogā
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Category: God’s Joyful Love

Closes the inclusio begun at sing_aloud (3:14, same רנן root); MUST audibly echo the 3:14 rendering via shared गीत/जयजयकार vocabulary, or the passage’s central literary vehicle for God’s joyful love is severed.

Seek The Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā ko khojo
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance: Seeking the Lord
Rejected alternatives: आत्म-खोज (inward self-realization seeking), ज्ञान-मार्ग (the path to liberating self-knowledge)
Original: בַּקְּשׁוּ אֶת־יְהוָה
Category: Repentance and Seeking

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:3 (בַּקְּשׁוּ אֶת־יְהוָה). The book’s central positive imperative. Must be sharply distinguished from Hindu spiritual-search vocabulary framing seeking as an interior journey toward the self; the object sought is a distinct, personal, covenant-making God, wholly Other, consistent with baseline faith’s insistence on a specific Person as object.

Do Justice Seek Righteousness Seek Humility

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nyāya karo…dhārmikatā ko khojo…namratā ko khojo
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance: Seeking the Lord
Original: עֲשׂוּ מִשְׁפָּט…
Category: Repentance and Seeking

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:3 (עֲשׂוּ מִשְׁפָּט… धार्मिकता reused exactly per baseline; धर्म absolutely forbidden. This triad must not read as merit-accumulating religious performance earning shelter from judgment — it is the practiced shape of a relationship already initiated by seeking YHWH earlier in the same verse, not a substitute path to standing before him.

High Risk Terms

Remnant

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bace hue loga
Doctrine: Election
Original:
Category: Remnant

Inherited from Romans package. In Zephaniah this exact phrase MUST be used for both Hebrew synonyms שְׁאֵרִית (2:7) and שְׁאָר (3:13) despite their different roots, so the remnant motif in remnant_house_of_judah and remnant_of_israel below reads as one unified concept.

Law

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vyavasthā
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

Inherited from Romans package. NEVER use धर्म (Hindu dharma). Governs violence_to_the_law (Zephaniah 3:4).

Holy

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

Inherited from Romans package. Governs the ironic negative use at Zephaniah 3:4 (prophets_reckless_priests_profane), where legitimate priests profane what is पवित्र.

Kingship Of Jesus

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yīśu kā rājatva
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: cf. מֶלֶךְ (melekh) applied to YHWH at Zephaniah 3:15
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced by king_of_israel_yhwh (Zephaniah 3:15) for consistency when this OT curriculum is studied alongside NT materials identifying Jesus with this same divine kingship.

Worship

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ārādhanā
Doctrine: Worship
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: Restoration

Inherited from Romans package. NEVER पूजा. Governs serve_with_one_accord (Zephaniah 3:9), the promised unified worship of the restored nations.

Conscience

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: viveka
Doctrine: Conscience
Rejected alternatives:
Original: cf. בּוֹשׁ (bosh, shame-sense) / συνείδησις
Category: Judgment on Complacency

Inherited from Romans package. Governs knows_no_shame (Zephaniah 3:5); distinguish from Vedantic विवेक as philosophical discrimination between real/unreal — context must keep the moral-conscience sense before a personal God plain.

Providence

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā vidhāna
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πρόνοια (cf. Zephaniah 1:12’s denial and 3:17’s affirmation of divine action)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. In Zephaniah, this doctrine is denied by the false creed at 1:12 (false_creed_no_divine_action) and decisively affirmed at 3:15-17.

Faith

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives:
Original: cf. אמן / בטח roots (contrasted with חסה, chasah, ‘take refuge’)
Category: Repentance and Seeking

Inherited from Romans package. Deliberately NOT used for Zephaniah’s seek_the_lord (בַּקְּשׁוּ, 2:3) or take_refuge_in_the_name (חָסוּ, 3:12), which use distinct Hebrew roots and register; विश्वास is reserved here as the reference point against which those two terms must be kept lexically distinct, per baseline’s insistence that the object of trust is always a specific Person.

Idolatry

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability

Inherited from Romans package. Handle pastorally in Hindu-background contexts (mūrti veneration, iṣṭa-devatā practice) but do not soften Zephaniah 1:4-6; 3:1-4’s direct condemnation of Baal-worship, astral worship, and syncretism.

Sin

Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives:

Inherited from Romans package. General moral-transgression vocabulary underlying Zephaniah’s judgment oracles throughout; distinguish from ritual impurity (अशुद्धता, reserved sense) and from bad karma. Note the special convergence with covenantal defilement at woe_rebellious_defiled (3:1), where अशुद्ध carries both moral and covenantal force simultaneously.

Wrath Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā krodha
Doctrine: Judgment
Rejected alternatives: बदला

Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Zephaniah 1:14-18’s escalating ‘day of wrath, day of trouble and distress’ imagery; God’s settled righteous judgment against covenant unfaithfulness, never personal revenge (बदला) or capricious anger, and never impersonal karmic retribution.

Repentance

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mana phirāva
Doctrine: Repentance
Rejected alternatives:

Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Zephaniah 2:1-3’s call to national self-examination and seeking YHWH; turning of the whole life toward God, not merely feeling remorse (पश्चाताप) or performing penance/merit-earning ritual.

False Creed No Divine Action

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā na bhalāī karegā, na burāī
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Category: God

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:12. A quoted, CONDEMNED false creed, not the book’s own theology; must be clearly marked as an error being refuted in any surrounding study material. Directly opposes baseline providence. Risk heightened by resemblance to common Hindi fatalistic भाग्य-resignation speech.

Utterly Sweep Away

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: maiṃ saba kucha pūrī taraha miṭā dūṅgā
Doctrine: Universal/Cosmic Scope of Judgment
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:2-3. Emphatic doubled Hebrew construction (אָסֹף אָסֵף) deliberately reversing the Genesis creation catalogue. A flattened single-verb rendering would understate the un-creation scope and risk limiting the judgment to Judah’s politics rather than YHWH’s sovereignty over all creation.

Day Of Sacrifice

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā kā balidāna
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:7-8. An ironic JUDGMENT image (the guilty as sacrificial victims, foreign armies as invited diners) — NOT to be confused with positive worship-offering register; a translator note distinguishing this from consecrated worship language is required.

Host Of Heaven

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ākāśa kī senā
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original:
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:5. Must not be softened toward, or confused with, the continuing Indian Navagraha (nine-celestial-body) devotional astrology tradition; a flat neutral-cosmology gloss would obscure that this names condemned idolatry, not scientific description. Route for theologian review.

Swear By Yhwh And Malkam

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā kī aura Malkāma kī bhī śapatha khānevāle
Doctrine: Judgment on Religious Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: a simple either/or apostasy contrast (loses the simultaneity)
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:5. The precise sin condemned is simultaneous double allegiance, not outright rejection of YHWH. The ‘and also’ simultaneity must be preserved — softening it erases the syncretism-specific critique, directly relevant where converts may retain other devotional practices alongside professed biblical faith.

Turned Back From Yhwh

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā ke pīche calane se muṛa jānevāle
Doctrine: Judgment on Religious Syncretism
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:6. Covenant-defection language describing prior allegiance now abandoned; distinguished from those who never sought YHWH — this distinction must survive translation.

Complacency On The Dregs

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apanī talachaṭa para jame hue loga
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: एक आलसी व्यक्ति (bare ‘lazy person,’ loses the specific charge)
Original: הַקֹּפְאִים עַל־שִׁמְרֵיהֶם
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:12. Central doctrine metaphor: settled practical unbelief that YHWH will act in history at all, not mere laziness — resonates uncomfortably with fatalistic भाग्य-based resignation in Hindi cultural idiom. Retain the extended descriptive phrase, not a single word.

Woe Rebellious Defiled

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: hāya, balavāī aura aśuddha nagarī!
Doctrine: Judgment on Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:1. अशुद्ध here denotes genuine moral/covenantal defilement, not the baseline’s reserved ritual-impurity sense (अशुद्धता); a clarifying note is required so this convergence is not softened into a merely ceremonial charge.

Prophets Reckless Priests Profane

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uske bhaviṣyadvaktā utāvale haiṃ; uske yājakoṃ ne pavitra vastu ko apavitra ṭharāyā hai
Doctrine: Judgment on Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Rejected alternatives: a rendering of अपवित्र as mere carelessness (understates active desecration)
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:4. Reuses baseline भविष्यद्वक्ता and पवित्र exactly. This shows judgment on idolatry/complacency operating inside the legitimate religious establishment itself, not only among outright pagan idolaters — अपवित्र ठहराना must denote active desecration.

Violence To The Law

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: unhoṃne vyavasthā ke viruddha upadrava kiyā hai
Doctrine: Judgment on Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:4 (חָמְסוּ תוֹרָה). Reuses व्यवस्था exactly per baseline law; never धर्म. Corrupt leaders actively pervert Torah rather than merely neglecting it.

Call On Name Of Yhwh

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā ke nāma se prārthanā karanā
Doctrine: Purified Worship Extended to the Nations
Category: Restoration

Shares its underlying formula with Joel 2:32/Romans 10:13’s salvation-confession ‘call on the name of the Lord.’ Flagged for cross-curriculum consistency: this Hindi rendering should align with however that NT formula is or will be rendered in Romans materials in this Language Package.

Humble And Lowly People

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dīna aura daridra prajā
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original:
Category: Remnant

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:12 (עַם־עָנִי וָדָל). Direct restatement of the remnant’s defining spiritual-posture character; vocabulary must remain consistent with humble_of_the_land (2:3) so readers recognize the same recurring remnant theme.

Remnant Of Israel

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Isrāela ke bace hue loga
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:13 (שְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵל). MUST use the identical baseline remnant phrase बचे हुए लोग used for שְׁאֵרִית at 2:7 (remnant_house_of_judah), despite the differing Hebrew root, so the remnant motif reads as unified.

Grieve For Appointed Feasts

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: niyata utsavoṃ ke liye śoka karanevāle
Doctrine: The Restoration of Israel’s Fortunes
Original:
Category: Restoration

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:18 (נוּגֵי מִמּוֹעֵד). One of the most textually and lexically difficult phrases in the book; English versions diverge significantly. Mandatory theologian/scholar review; never present a single confident rendering without a translator’s note acknowledging the difficulty.

Humble Of The Land

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pṛthvī ke dīna loga
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original:
Category: Remnant

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:3 (עַנְוֵי הָאָרֶץ). Spiritual posture, not economic status alone; the remnant identified by humility. Must not be rendered as a purely socio-economic descriptor, which would obscure the spiritual-posture sense central to the remnant doctrine.

Remnant House Of Judah

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahūdā ke gharāne ke bace hue loga
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Category: Remnant

Reuses baseline remnant exactly; must match the Hindi wording used for remnant_of_israel (3:13) so the motif reads as unified across chapters 2 and 3.

Medium Risk Terms

Mercy

Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Mercy of God

Inherited from Romans package. Kept distinct from अनुग्रह (grace). Relevant to Zephaniah’s ḥesed/simchah covenant-love register underlying 3:17, though not the primary rendering used there (see god_rejoices_over_you).

Silence Before The Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Prabhu Yahovā ke sāmane śānta raho
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:7. Dual divine title אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה rendered प्रभु यहोवा so the baseline lord-title and the transliterated personal name both remain visible. Native speaker review to ensure reverent dread, not casual quiet.

Enemy Cleared Away

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: tere śatru ko dūra kara diyā hai
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:15. Concrete historical/military deliverance paired with the forensic clause above; low collision risk.

Fear No More

Approved rendering:
Doctrine: The Judicial Removal of Condemnation and Fear
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:15. Total removal of dread; the totality (‘again’/‘no more’) must not be softened into a temporary or partial reassurance.

Fear Not

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mata ḍara
Doctrine: The Judicial Removal of Condemnation and Fear
Original:
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:16. Classic divine-reassurance formula. Must not be rendered as mere psychological calm achievable via meditative technique (cf. baseline peace/शांति caution); confidence grounded in a relational promise from a God present ‘in her midst.‘

Sing Aloud

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: gāo / ūṅce śabda se gāo
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. First half of the joy inclusio; shares its root with exult_with_singing (3:17). Must use a shared गीत/जयजयकार vocabulary family with 3:17 so the inclusio (people’s song answered by God’s own song) remains audible.

Shout Acclaim

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: jayajayakāra karo
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Same Hebrew root elsewhere signals a war-alarm (1:16); translator note required distinguishing this joyful sense so readers do not carry residual dread into the joy oracle.

Exult

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: praphullita ho / magana ho
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Must register greater intensity than rejoice; a flat synonym-repeat would erase the deliberate escalation across the passage’s four imperatives.

Baal

Approved rendering: बाल
Transliteration: Bāla
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original:
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:4. Transliterated proper name (Canaanite storm/fertility deity). Mandatory footnote on first occurrence explaining the deliberate Hebrew ‘lord/master’ double meaning; never use स्वामी even in the gloss, per the baseline लord entry’s prohibition.

Idolatrous Priests

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mūrtipūjaka yājaka
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original:
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:4 (כְּמָרִים). Used exclusively pejoratively of pagan/syncretistic cultic priests; distinguished sharply from legitimate याजक condemned separately at 3:4.

Malkam

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Malkāma
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original:
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:5. Transliterated proper name of the Ammonite national deity; footnote identifying it required for readers unfamiliar with the ANE background.

Foreign Attire

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: videśī vastra
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original:
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:8. Symbol of religious-cultural assimilation to idolatrous nations; native speaker review to keep the assimilation-critique force clear rather than reading as mere fashion critique.

Leaping Over Threshold

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ḍevaḍhī ko phāndanevāle
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Original: הַקֹּפְצִים עַל־הַמִּפְתָּן
Category: Idolatry

[NEW] Zephaniah 1:9. Obscure ANE cultic allusion (cf. 1 Samuel 5:5); requires explanatory footnote, since a literal rendering alone is opaque without the historical background.

Oppressing City

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: atyācārī nagara
Doctrine: Judgment on Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Rejected alternatives: dove-city / gentle-city rendering (homograph misreading)
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:1 (הָעִיר הַיּוֹנָה, from ינה ‘to oppress,’ NOT from יוֹנָה ‘dove’). Mandatory translator note flagging the homograph risk to prevent an inverted ‘gentle city’ rendering.

Predatory Leadership

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uske hākima garajanevāle siṃha haiṃ, uske nyāyī sāṃjha ke bheḍiye haiṃ
Doctrine: Judgment on Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Rejected alternatives: भ्रष्ट अधिकारी (abstract paraphrase that domesticates the imagery)
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:3. Predatory-animal metaphors for corrupt, exploitative leadership; retain the vivid imagery rather than an abstract paraphrase.

Knows No Shame

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vaha lajjā nahīṃ jānatā
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:5. Diagnostic of a hardened, seared conscience; related to baseline conscience (विवेक). Distinguish from mere social embarrassment.

Pure Speech For Nations

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: śuddha vāṇī
Doctrine: Purified Worship Extended to the Nations
Original:
Category: Restoration

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:9 (שָׂפָה בְרוּרָה). Moral-spiritual purification of worship-speech content and intent, not a literal Babel-reversal into one shared tongue.

Serve With One Accord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: eka mana se uskī sevā karanā
Doctrine: Purified Worship Extended to the Nations
Rejected alternatives: एक कंधे से उसकी सेवा करना (literal ‘shoulder’ calque, unnatural in Hindi)
Category: Restoration

Idiom for unified, cooperative worship; reuses baseline worship (आराधना) semantic field. Render naturally, not with a literal shoulder calque.

Take Refuge In The Name

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yahovā ke nāma kī śaraṇa leṃge
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: भरोसा/विश्वास (would blur this refuge-image into the technical baseline faith register)
Original:
Category: Remnant

Refuge-language from a distinct Hebrew root (חסה); deliberately avoid भरोसा/विश्वास to keep three distinct Hebrew idioms (seek, trust/faith, take refuge) from collapsing into one Hindi word.

Remnant Moral Transformation

Approved rendering:
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: לֹא־יַעֲשׂוּ עַוְלָה…
Category: Remnant

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:13. Positive moral fruit of the remnant’s restored relationship with YHWH; must be read as a RESULT of restoration (per 2:3’s command now fulfilled), never a precondition earning remnant status.

Lie Down Untroubled

Approved rendering:
Doctrine: The Restoration of Israel’s Fortunes
Category: Restoration

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:13. Stock covenant-blessing formula for total security (cf. Leviticus 26:6; Micah 4:4); if this Language Package expands to those books, reuse this exact Hindi phrase for cross-reference consistency.

Burden Of Reproach

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: usa para nindā kā bojha thā
Doctrine: Reversal of Reproach into Honor
Category: Honor and Shame

Flag for honor/shame native-speaker review consistent with reproach_taunts (2:8); keep the reversal-link to made_praise_and_a_name visible.

Lame And Outcast

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: laṅgaḍe / nikāle hue loga
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: הַצֹּלֵעָה / הַנִּדָּחָה
Category: Remnant

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:19 (הַצֹּלֵעָה / הַנִּדָּחָה). Figures for the weak, marginalized, scattered among God’s people, specifically gathered and honored; must read as compassionate covenant restoration, not a stigmatizing label.

Made Praise And A Name

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: maiṃ unheṃ praśaṃsā aura nāma kā kāraṇa banāūṅgā
Doctrine: Reversal of Reproach into Honor
Category: Honor and Shame

Direct reversal of reproach_taunts/burden_of_reproach; keep the explicit reversal-link visible in the Hindi phrasing.

Restore Your Fortunes

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: jaba maiṃ tumhārī baṃdhuāī ko lauṭā lāūṅgā
Doctrine: The Restoration of Israel’s Fortunes
Original: בְּשׁוּבִי אֶת־שְׁבוּתֵיכֶם
Category: Restoration

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:20 (בְּשׁוּבִי אֶת־שְׁבוּתֵיכֶם). Stock prophetic restoration formula (cf. Jeremiah 29:14; 30:3; 33:11; Amos 9:14); record for reuse in any future prophetic-literature curricula.

Gather Yourselves

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apane āpako ikaṭṭhā karo
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance: Seeking the Lord
Original: הִתְקוֹשְׁשׁוּ וָקוֹשּׁוּ
Category: Repentance and Seeking

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:1 (הִתְקוֹשְׁשׁוּ וָקוֹשּׁוּ). Rare, textually difficult reflexive verb possibly related to ‘stubble/chaff.’ Flag the lexical obscurity in a translator note; do not over-specify an uncertain etymology in the main rendering.

Perhaps Be Hidden

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: śāyada tuma chipa sako / baca sako
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance: Seeking the Lord
Original:
Category: Repentance and Seeking

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:3 (אוּלַי תִּסָּתְרוּ). Preserve the tentative ‘perhaps’ — theologically deliberate divine freedom in mercy, not a hedge to smooth into a guaranteed formula.

My Possession

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: merī nija bhāga / merī mīrāsa
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original:
Category: Remnant

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:9 (נַחֲלָתִי). Covenant-property language; direction of possession (God possessing his people/land) must be kept clear to avoid confusion with baseline adoption’s inheritance-received-BY-the-believer framing, which runs the opposite direction.

Reproach Taunts

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nindā / ulāhanā
Doctrine: Reversal of Reproach into Honor
Original: חֶרְפָּה / גִדּוּפִים
Category: Honor and Shame

[NEW] Zephaniah 2:8 (חֶרְפָּה / גִדּוּפִים). Insults and mockery directed at God’s people by neighboring nations, later reversed into honor at 3:18-20; flag for native speaker honor/shame review; do not flatten into a purely legal or physical-harm term.

Low Risk Terms

Prophet

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives:
Original:
Category: Judgment on Complacency

Inherited from Romans package. Used ironically of corrupt prophets at Zephaniah 3:4; do not confuse with astrologer/fortune-teller.

Boasting

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ghamaṇḍa
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: καυχάομαι (semantic parallel to גָּאוֹן)
Category: Honor and Shame

Inherited from Romans package. Reused for Moab’s גָּאוֹן (pride) at Zephaniah 2:10.

Hands Not Weak

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: tere hātha ḍhīle na hoṃ
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Original: אַל־יִרְפּוּ יָדָיִךְ
Category: Day of the Lord

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:16. Natural Hindi idiom for discouragement; no significant doctrinal risk.

Rejoice

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ānandita ho
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Standard joy vocabulary.

Daughter Of Zion

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Siyyona kī beṭī
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Corporate personification of the covenant people; established personification idiom.

Daughter Of Jerusalem

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yarūśalema kī beṭī
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Synonymous parallelism with daughter_of_zion.

With All Heart

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apane sāre mana se
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original:
Category: God’s Joyful Love

[NEW] Zephaniah 3:14. Echoes Shema-pattern whole-hearted devotion; standard idiom.
