Core Glossary

Core Glossary: Job (Hindi Destination Language Package)

This glossary extends, and never contradicts, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. Every term below either (a) reuses a baseline rendering exactly, with a note on any Job-specific semantic-domain difference, or (b) is a new term proposed for this curriculum, with rejected alternatives and a risk tier assigned using the baseline’s own risk methodology (Critical / High / Medium / Low).

Reused Baseline Terms Appearing in Job (No Deviation Permitted)

Term (English)HebrewHindi (exact, from baseline)RiskJob-specific note
Godאֱלֹהִים / אֵל / אֱלוֹהַपरमेश्वरCriticalאֱלוֹהַ (Eloah), the poetic singular form, is Job’s dominant divine title (~41x) and must still render as परमेश्वर.
Sinחָטָא / עָוֹן / פֶּשַׁעपापHighUsed throughout the friends’ speeches and the prologue (1:22; 2:10 and passim).
Mediatorמוֹכִיח / מַלְאָךְ מֵלִיץमध्यस्थHighEstablishes at 9:33; recurs 16:19 (witness) and 33:23 (mediating angel); keep consistent across all three nodes so the Mediator/Redeemer Hope motif’s development is visible.
Restorationשׁוּב / שְׁבוּתबहालीHighJob 42:10, God’s restoration of Job’s fortunes; context must clarify this is gracious, not a mechanical karmic repayment.
Curse (judicial/ritual)קָלַל / אָרַר (cf. also אָלָה, oath-curse)श्राप / श्रापितHigh1:5,11; 2:5,9 (euphemistic “bless” for “curse”); distinguish from शपथ (oath) used for Job’s own self-binding oaths, chs. 27, 31.
Hypocrisy (root)חָנֵף (adjective; cognate concept)कपट(ी)Medium20:5 “the godless/hypocrite” — reuse कपट root from the baseline Galatians entry.
Intercessionפָּלַלमध्यस्थताMedium42:8,10, Job interceding for his friends — resolves the mediator motif narratively.
Resurrection (as a doctrinal category, NOT a specific Job term)(cf. קוּם, חיה)पुनरुत्थानCriticalApplies only if a resurrection-coded rendering is chosen at 19:25-26 or 14:14; NEVER पुनर्जन्म under any circumstance.
Redemption (abstract)(cf. גָּאַל, כֹּפֶר)छुटकाराHighRoot for the new “Redeemer” (agent-noun) term below; NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष.
Power of God(cf. שַׁדַּי contexts)सामर्थ्यHighSee the new “Almighty/Shaddai” entry below — this baseline rule is the reason सर्वशक्तिमान is flagged as a Critical conflict for Job.
GloryכָּבוֹדमहिमाHighJob 19:9 uses כָּבוֹד for Job’s own human honor/dignity, NOT divine glory — flag this semantic-domain difference on every occurrence in Job.
Son of God (Critical, Christ-exclusive)परमेश्वर का पुत्रCriticalMust NOT be used for Job’s בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים (“sons of God” = angels/heavenly council, 1:6; 2:1; 38:7). See new entry below.
Holy Spirit (Third Person, Trinity)पवित्र आत्माCriticalMust NOT be the default rendering for Elihu’s general רוּחַ (“breath/spirit of insight,” 32:8; 33:4). See new entry below.
Revelation (avoid दर्शन)प्रकाशनMediumGoverning precedent for the new “see God” entry below — दर्शन must be avoided there for the identical reason it is avoided here.

New Terms Proposed for the Job Curriculum

#Term (English gloss)Hebrew (translit.)Category / DoctrineRiskHindi renderingRejected alternativesNotes
1Satan / the Accuserהַשָּׂטָן (ha-satan)Satan’s Limited Power under God’s SovereigntyHighशैतान (śaitāna)दानव, असुर (rejected: import Hindu demon/anti-god categories with different cosmology)Job 1:6–2:7. Note this is a court title (“the Accuser”) in Job’s earliest usage; LXX renders διάβολος. Satan acts only within God’s explicit permission (1:12; 2:6) — this bounded-permission detail is the doctrinal center of the term and must survive translation.
2Sons of God / heavenly councilבְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים (bene ha-Elohim)Satan’s Limited Power; Sovereignty of GodCriticalस्वर्गदूत / स्वर्गीय सभा के सदस्य (svargadūta / svargīya sabhā ke sadasya)परमेश्वर का पुत्र (forbidden — reserved exclusively for Christ per baseline)Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7. Direct collision risk with the baseline’s Critical son_of_god term. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence; explicit translator note required.
3Blameless / of complete integrityתָּם (tam)Faith and Integrity amid SufferingHighखरा (khārā)सिद्ध (rejected: Hindu/Jain “perfected being” connotation), निर्दोष alone (too narrow, loses “wholeness”)Job 1:1,8; 2:3; foundational premise the whole book defends.
4Uprightיָשָׁר (yashar)Faith and Integrity amid SufferingMediumसीधा / धर्मीPaired stock phrase with תָּם. धर्मी licensed by baseline’s own justification-compound precedent.
5Fear of Godיִרְאַת אֱלֹהִים (yirat Elohim)Faith and Integrity; Wisdom (ch. 28)Mediumपरमेश्वर का भय / प्रभु का भयभय अकेला (rejected without qualifier: risks reading as mere terror)Job 1:1; 28:28; must convey reverential awe, distinct from Hindu bhakti fear-love reciprocity.
6The Almighty (El Shaddai)שַׁדַּי (Shaddai)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodCriticalसर्वसमर्थ परमेश्वर (sarva-samartha Parameśvara)सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर (flagged conflict — common existing Hindi Bible usage, but reintroduces the शक्ति morpheme forbidden by the baseline’s power_of_god entry)31 occurrences across Job, the book’s dominant divine title. Requires explicit Phase 2 theologian adjudication given the tension between established Hindi Bible usage and the baseline’s own Critical prohibition. Translator note mandatory on first occurrence (5:17).
7Sheol / the realm of the deadשְׁאוֹל (she’ol)Problem of Suffering; Mediator/Redeemer Hope (as contrast term)Highअधोलोक / मृतकों का स्थानपाताल (rejected: Hindu mythological netherworld populated by nāgas/asuras)3:13; 7:9; 10:21-22; 14:13; 17:13-16; 26:5-6. Must remain a shadowy, non-mythologized “place of the dead,” consistent across every occurrence.
8Justice / judgmentמִשְׁפָּט (mishpat)Divine Justice; Retribution Theology ChallengedHighन्याय (nyāya)Central theodicy term; distinct from and compatible with the baseline’s धार्मिकता (righteousness) — न्याय names the separate concept of judgment/justice. Frequent throughout (8:3; 9:19; 19:7; 23:4; 27:2; 29:14; 31:13; 32:9; 34:4-6,12,17,23; 35:14; 36:6,17; 37:23; 40:8).
9The wickedרָשָׁע (rasha)Retribution Theology ChallengedHighदुष्ट (duṣṭa)Extensive use across the friends’ speeches and Job’s empirical rebuttal (ch. 21); consistency essential.
10Righteous personצַדִּיק (tsaddiq)Divine Justice; Retribution Theology ChallengedHighधर्मी (dharmī)Reuses the baseline’s own precedent (from “धर्मी ठहराया जाना,” justification) of licensing धर्मी for “a person in right standing,” while धर्म alone remains forbidden.
11Mediator / arbiterמוֹכִיח (mokiach)The Mediator/Redeemer HopeHighमध्यस्थ (REUSED from baseline)दलाल (rejected: commercial “broker/agent” connotation, too transactional)Job 9:33, the motif’s first node.
12Witness in heavenעֵד / שָׂהֵד (ed / sahed)The Mediator/Redeemer HopeHighस्वर्गीय गवाह / साक्षी (svargīya gavāha / sākṣī)दर्शक (rejected: mere “spectator,” too passive for a legal witness)Job 16:19. Flag साक्षी’s overlap with Advaita Vedanta’s “Witness-Consciousness” (sākṣī-caitanya); गवाह is the religiously-safer default.
13Redeemerגֹּאֵל (go’el)The Mediator/Redeemer HopeCriticalछुटकारा देनेवाला (chuṭakārā denevālā)मुक्तिदाता (rejected: contains the forbidden मुक्ति root, would import Hindu liberation-from-samsara theology)Job 19:25 — the curriculum’s core verse. Built directly on the baseline’s छुटकारा (redemption) root. Mandatory theologian review.
14Ransomכֹּפֶר (kopher)The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Atonement (adjacent)Highछुटकारे का दाम / प्रतिफल (chuṭakāre kā dāma / pratiphala)Job 33:24. Legal-financial nuance distinct from גָּאַל’s kinship-redemption nuance; do not collapse the two Hindi renderings into one term.
15Mediating angel / heavenly interpreterמַלְאָךְ מֵלִיץ (mal’akh melitz)The Mediator/Redeemer HopeHighमध्यस्थ स्वर्गदूत (madhyastha svargadūta)परमेश्वर का पुत्र (forbidden, same collision as entry 2)Job 33:23, Elihu’s speech; third node of the mediator-motif cluster.
16Wisdomחָכְמָה (chokmah)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodMediumबुद्धि (buddhi)ज्ञान (rejected: over-weighted toward jnana-marga liberating-knowledge associations), प्रज्ञा (rejected: strong Buddhist technical-term association)12:12; ch. 28 (dedicated poem); 28:28’s programmatic definition.
17Understandingתְּבוּנָה (tevunah)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodLowसमझ (samajha)Ch. 28, paired with चोखमाह.
18Spirit/breath in man (general endowment)רוּחַ (ruach, Elihu’s usage)Sovereignty of God (adjacent)Highआत्मा / श्वास, context-qualified (NOT the capitalized पवित्र आत्मा by default)पवित्र आत्मा unqualified (rejected as default — risks over-reading full Trinitarian pneumatology into Wisdom-literature usage)32:8; 33:4. Mandatory translator note distinguishing this general life-breath/insight endowment from the baseline’s Critical, hypostatic holy_spirit doctrine.
19Behemothבְּהֵמוֹת (behemoth)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodMediumबेहेमोथ (transliterated)Job 40:15-24. Do not associate with Hindu Puranic creatures/avatars.
20Leviathanלִוְיָתָן (livyatan)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodMediumलिव्यातान (transliterated)Job 41. Do not associate with Shesha Naga/Vasuki or other Hindu serpent-cosmology figures.
21I repent / I am comfortedנִחַמְתִּי (nichamti, Niphal of נחם)Repentance and RestorationCriticalमुझे शान्ति/संतोष मिला है (preferred) or मैं अपनी बात से फिर जाता हूँ (alternate, “I retract my case”)मन फिराव unqualified (rejected as an unglossed default — risks implying Job confesses the specific sins his friends alleged, which the epilogue explicitly denies, 42:7-8)Job 42:6, the hinge verse of the doctrine. Mandatory translator note recording both the “repent” and “am comforted” scholarly readings; mandatory theologian review.
22Restoration of fortunesשׁוּב אֶת־שְׁבוּת (shuv et-shevut)Repentance and RestorationHighबहाली (REUSED from baseline)Job 42:10. Context must prevent a karmic-repayment misreading.
23Burnt offeringעוֹלָה (olah)(supporting; Church/worship-adjacent)Mediumहोमबलि (homabali)Job 1:5; 42:8. Distinct semantic domain from the baseline’s Romans 12:1 caution against बलि/यज्ञ — here a literal cultic sacrifice is intended and होमबलि is standard and appropriate.
24Human honor/dignity (non-divine כָּבוֹד)כָּבוֹד (kavod, human sense)Problem of SufferingMediumमहिमा (REUSED, with gloss) / मेरी प्रतिष्ठाJob 19:9. Flag the semantic-domain shift from the baseline’s divine-glory usage on every occurrence.
25Legal dispute / caseרִיב (riv)Divine JusticeMediumमुक़दमा / विवादJob 23:4; recurring courtroom metaphor.
26The poor / afflictedעָנִי (ani)Divine JusticeMediumदीन / दरिद्रJob 24, evidence-against-retribution passage.
27Oath (self-binding legal oath)אָלָה (alah)Faith and Integrity amid SufferingMediumशपथ (śapatha)श्राप (reserved for the baseline’s atonement/curse-bearing sense; not used for Job’s self-binding oaths)Job 27:2ff; ch. 31’s extended oath of innocence.
28Discipline / correctionמוּסָר (musar)Retribution Theology Challenged (Eliphaz’s milder variant)Mediumताड़ना / शिक्षाJob 5:17; anticipates Elihu’s fuller development (chs. 33, 36).
29The godless / hypocriteחָנֵף (chanef)Retribution Theology ChallengedMediumकपटी / अधर्मीJob 20:5; reuses कपट root.
30”I will see/behold” (of God)חָזָה / רָאָה (chazah / ra’ah)The Mediator/Redeemer HopeHighदेखूँगा (dekhūṅgā)दर्शन (forbidden — Hindu devotional viewing-of-a-deity connotation, same logic as baseline’s revelation entry)Job 19:26-27, the core passage’s climax. Must never use दर्शन for Job’s hoped-for vision of God.
31YHWH (the personal covenant name)יהוהSovereignty of God; textual/literary featureHighयहोवा (Yahovā)Confined to the narrative frame (chs. 1-2, 42) and divine speeches (chs. 38-41), plus one dialogue exception (12:9); distinct from generic परमेश्वर and from the poetic dialogues’ preferred אֱלוֹהַ/שַׁדַּי. Consistency of this distinction across all 42 chapters is a literary-theological feature worth preserving in teaching notes.
32Founding/establishing (creation)יָסַד (yasad)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodMediumनींव डालना / स्थापित करनाJob 38:4, the whirlwind speech’s opening rhetorical question.
33To wrong / pervert justiceעָוַת (avat)Problem of Suffering and Divine JusticeHighअन्याय करनाJob 19:6, Job’s direct accusation against God; must not be softened.
34Storm / whirlwindסְעָרָה (se’arah)Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of GodLowझंझावात / तूफ़ानJob 38:1; 40:6, the setting of the divine speeches.
35The days of mortal man (fragility)אֱנוֹשׁ (enosh)Problem of Suffering; Retribution Theology ChallengedMediumमनुष्य / मरणशील मनुष्यJob 4:17; 25:4, frail-mortality vocabulary underlying “can man be righteous before God.”
36Dust (mortality)עָפָר (aphar)The Mediator/Redeemer Hope (19:25); Repentance (42:6, “dust and ashes”)Mediumमिट्टी / धूलJob 19:25; 42:6. Retain the mortality/Genesis 3:19 resonance rather than flattening to a generic “ground/earth.”

Do not substitute alternatives.”). All Critical-risk entries above (Almighty/Shaddai, Sons of God, Redeemer, “I repent”/“I am comforted”) require explicit human theologian adjudication before Phase 2 processing of their respective passages may proceed.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान
Original: אֱלֹהִים / אֵל / אֱלוֹהַ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. In Job renders all three Hebrew forms אֱלֹהִים/אֵל/אֱלוֹהַ, including the poetic singular אֱלוֹהַ (Eloah), Job’s dominant dialogue divine title (~41 occurrences). Do not introduce a separate Hindi term for Eloah.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थान
Transliteration: punaruttāna
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म, पुनर्जीवन
Original: (cf. קוּם, חיה; doctrinal category, not a single fixed Job lexeme)
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Repentance and Restoration (adjacent)

Inherited from Romans package exactly. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. Applies to Job only if resurrection-coded vocabulary is deliberately chosen at the disputed 19:25-26 (he_will_stand) or 14:14 (will_he_live_again); Job’s Hebrew leaves both genuinely disputed between a legal-vindication and a bodily-resurrection reading — do not overclaim a settled doctrine.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā putra
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का अंश, देव-पुरुष

Inherited from Romans package exactly; reserved exclusively for Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal Sonship. MUST NOT be used for Job’s בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים (‘sons of God’ = angelic heavenly council, 1:6; 2:1; 38:7) — see the new sons_of_god entry, which renders that phrase with different Hindi vocabulary specifically to avoid this Critical collision.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
Original: (baseline Trinity term, contrasted here with Elihu’s רוּחַ)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly; reserved for the personal, hypostatic Third Person of the Trinity. MUST NOT be the default rendering for Elihu’s general רוּחַ (‘breath/spirit of insight,’ 32:8; 33:4) — see the new spirit_of_insight entry, which uses a context-qualified phrase instead.

Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Original: אֲדֹנָי
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. In Job renders אֲדֹנָי at the wisdom poem’s programmatic axiom (28:28, ‘the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom’) — an OT divine title parallel to Eloah/Shaddai, not the specifically NT Lordship-of-Christ confession; the Hindi word is unchanged but translators must not import Romans 10:9 christological content into this occurrence.

Righteousness

Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य, न्याय
Original: צֶדֶק / צְדָקָה / צָדַק
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged; Divine Justice

Inherited from Romans package exactly. NEVER धर्म. In Job renders צֶדֶק/צְדָקָה/צָדַק throughout the friends’ recurring challenge (‘can a man be righteous/more just than God?’ 4:17; 9:2; 25:4) — the retribution theologians’ foundational premise, which the whole book contests; render this thesis with full argumentative force.

Almighty Shaddai

Approved rendering: सर्वसमर्थ परमेश्वर
Transliteration: sarva-samartha Parameśvara
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर
Original: שַׁדַּי (אֵל שַׁדַּי)
Category: God

New term for this curriculum. Renders שַׁדַּי (‘the Almighty’), Job’s most frequent divine title (31 occurrences, the highest concentration in Scripture). CRITICAL CONFLICT: the common existing Hindi Bible rendering सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर reintroduces the शक्ति (Shakti) morpheme the baseline power_of_god entry forbids as the Hindu divine feminine cosmic energy. Built instead on the baseline’s sanctioned सामर्थ्य root. Requires explicit theologian sign-off and a translator’s note on first occurrence (5:17), inherited by all subsequent occurrences (6:4; 8:3,5; 11:7; 13:3; 15:25; 21:15,20; 22:3,17,23,25-26; 23:16; 27:2,10-11,13; 29:5; 31:2,35; 32:8; 33:4; 34:10,12; 35:13; 37:23; 40:2).

Sons Of God

Approved rendering: स्वर्गदूत / स्वर्गीय सभा के सदस्य
Transliteration: svargadūta / svargīya sabhā ke sadasya
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty
Rejected alternatives: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Original: בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים
Category: Satan’s Limited Power; Sovereignty

New term for this curriculum. Renders בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים (1:6; 2:1; 38:7), angelic members of God’s heavenly council. CRITICAL COLLISION: a literal rendering is identical in Hindi to the baseline’s Critical son_of_god term, reserved exclusively for Christ. Mandatory theologian review and translator’s note on every occurrence.

Redeemer

Approved rendering: छुटकारा देनेवाला
Transliteration: chuṭakārā denevālā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: मुक्तिदाता
Original: גֹּאֲלִי (root גָּאַל)
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

New term for this curriculum — the core passage’s central term. Renders גֹּאֵל (19:25), ‘my kinsman-redeemer,’ a legally-defined next-of-kin extended metaphorically to a divine vindicator. Built directly on the baseline’s छुटकारा root; NEVER मुक्तिदाता, which would contain the forbidden मुक्ति root and import Hindu liberation-from-samsara theology into the book’s most doctrinally weighted verse. Mandatory translator’s note distinguishing the go’el’s legal-kinsman nuance from a vague ‘savior’ and from मोक्ष/मुक्ति concepts, recording both the literary-kinsman background and the traditional Christological reading without overclaiming either as textually settled.

He Will Stand

Approved rendering: खड़ा होगा
Transliteration: khaṛā hogā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: पुनरुत्थान-family verb (without theologian sign-off)
Original: יָקוּם (root קוּם)
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Core Passage

New term for this curriculum — core passage. Renders יָקוּם (root קוּם, 19:25b), ‘he will arise/stand up.’ Recommended as the safer default, permitting the vindicator/legal-advocate reading without prematurely importing full bodily-resurrection doctrine the Hebrew does not unambiguously assert here. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. If a पुनरुत्थान-family verb is used instead, it requires explicit theologian sign-off given genuine scholarly disagreement over which sense the verse intends.

In Without My Flesh

Approved rendering: अपने ही शरीर में
Transliteration: apane hī śarīra meṃ
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: शरीर के बिना (unqualified disembodied rendering as the sole text)
Original: מִבְּשָׂרִי (מִן + בָּשָׂר)
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Core Passage

New term for this curriculum — the single most contested crux in the book. Renders מִבְּשָׂרִי (19:26), where מִן is genuinely ambiguous between ‘from within my flesh’ (embodied) and ‘away from my flesh’ (disembodied). Follows historic Hindi Bible tradition (BSI OV/NV, paralleling KJV) with an embodied-hope reading, while a mandatory translator’s note records the alternative scholarly ‘without my flesh’ reading. This is not the baseline’s technical Pauline sarx sense; flag this semantic-domain difference on every occurrence.

Repent Or Comforted

Approved rendering: मुझे शान्ति मिली है / मैं अपनी बात से फिर जाता हूँ
Transliteration: mujhe śānti milī hai / maiṃ apanī bāta se phira jātā hūṃ
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: मन फिराव (unqualified default)
Original: נִחַמְתִּי (Niphal of נחם)
Category: Repentance and Restoration

New term for this curriculum — the epilogue’s hinge verse. Renders נִחַמְתִּי (42:6, Niphal of נחם), genuinely disputed between ‘I retract/relent’ and ‘I am comforted/console myself.’ Do NOT default to the baseline’s मन फिराव (built for NT metanoia, turning from specific committed sin) without a substantial adapting note, since that could misleadingly imply Job confesses the specific sins his friends alleged — explicitly denied by the epilogue (42:7-8). Mandatory translator’s note recording BOTH readings; mandatory theologian review.

Though He Slay Me Crux

Approved rendering: यद्यपि वह मुझे मार डाले, तौभी मैं उस पर भरोसा रखूँगा
Transliteration: yadyapi vaha mujhe māra ḍāle, taubhī maiṃ usa para bharosā rakhūṃgā
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Rejected alternatives: मुझे कोई आशा नहीं (the despairing ‘I have no hope’ Kethiv reading, rendered as sole text)

New term for this curriculum. Renders 13:15’s Kethiv/Qere crux (הֵן יִקְטְלֵנִי … אֲיַחֵל), where the Masoretic written/read tradition diverges on a single letter (לוֹ ‘in him’ vs. לֹא ‘not’), inverting the verse between defiant trust and despairing resignation. Recommend the traditional, historically dominant reading consistent with established Hindi Bible tradition and the verse’s canonical devotional use, while a mandatory translator’s note records the textual variant. Theologian review required on every occurrence.

High Risk Terms

Sin

Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता
Original: חָטָא / עָוֹן / פֶּשַׁע
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Renders חָטָא/עָוֹן/פֶּשַׁע throughout Job. The narrator’s explicit statement that Job did not sin (1:22; 2:10) is foundational evidence against the friends’ retribution theology.

Mediator

Approved rendering: मध्यस्थ
Transliteration: madhyastha
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: दलाल
Original: מוֹכִיח
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

Inherited from the Galatians mediator entry exactly. In Job renders מוֹכִיח at its first occurrence (9:33), the motif’s first node; keep consistent with witness_in_heaven (16:19) and mediating_angel (33:23) so the progressive development toward the redeemer entry (19:25) remains visible.

Restoration

Approved rendering: बहाली
Transliteration: bahālī
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration
Original: שׁוּב אֶת־שְׁבוּת (or שְׁבִית) אִיּוֹב
Category: Repentance and Restoration

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Renders שׁוּב אֶת־שְׁבוּת אִיּוֹב (42:10). Context must make clear this is God’s gracious sovereign initiative, not mechanical merit-repayment for Job’s endurance — the epilogue condemns the friends’ retribution theology (42:7-8) even as it restores Job.

Curse

Approved rendering: श्राप / श्रापित
Transliteration: śrāpa / śrāpita
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Original: קָלַל / אָרַר
Category: Faith and Integrity; Retribution Theology (euphemism pattern)

Inherited from the Galatians curse entry exactly. Renders קָלַל/אָרַר in Job’s prologue, including the ironic scribal euphemism where ‘bless’ (בֵּרֵךְ) substitutes for ‘curse’ (1:5,11; 2:5,9). Keep distinct from the new oath entry (शपथ), reserved for Job’s own self-binding legal oaths (chs. 27, 31).

Redemption

Approved rendering: छुटकारा
Transliteration: chuṭakārā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Original: (root גָּאַל; cf. also כֹּפֶר)
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Supplies the root for the new redeemer entry (גֹּאֵל) and is conceptually distinct from the new ransom entry (כֹּפֶר) — do not collapse the two Hebrew legal concepts into one Hindi rendering. NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī sāmarthya
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति, ताकत
Original: (cf. שַׁדַּי contexts; גְּבוּרָה/כֹּח in the divine speeches)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. NEVER शक्ति. This is the governing rule that makes Job’s most frequent divine title (שַׁדַּי, 31 occurrences) require the new almighty_shaddai adjudication below, since the common existing Hindi rendering सर्वशक्तिमान reintroduces exactly the forbidden शक्ति morpheme.

Glory

Approved rendering: महिमा
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: देव-ज्योति, प्रकाश
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Renders כָּבוֹד in its usual divine-radiance sense in Job’s divine speeches; however at 19:9 the identical Hebrew word instead names Job’s own stripped social honor (non-divine sense) — see the new human_honor entry, and flag this semantic-domain shift on every occurrence (19:9; 29:1-25).

Creator

Approved rendering: सृजनहार
Transliteration: sṛjanahāra
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा
Original: עֹשֶׂה
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Renders עֹשֶׂה (‘maker’) in Job’s divine speeches (chs. 38-41) and at 4:17; 35:10 (‘God my Maker’). Never a Hindu creator-deity name.

Sovereignty

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की संप्रभुता
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī samprabhutā
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति
Original: (theological category; cf. 1:12, 2:6, 42:2)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. In Job this is the theological category governing Satan’s bounded permission (1:12; 2:6) and the whirlwind speeches (chs. 38-41); Job’s entire argument depends on suffering being governed by a personal, addressable God, never impersonal fate or karma.

Providence

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का विधान
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā vidhāna
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, कर्म का नियम
Original: (theological category; cf. 42:2 “I know that you can do all things”)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package exactly. In Job this covers God’s personal governance extending even to Job’s specific losses and restoration (42:2); must be distinguished from the friends’ mechanical retribution theology, in which outcomes automatically track merit.

Faith

Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, आस्था, भरोसा

Inherited from Romans package exactly, but flagged for Job-specific semantic extension: in Job, विश्वास-type trust operates as sustained trust without the object’s reasons ever being disclosed, sustained through direct complaint rather than settled confidence in a recoverable promise. Gloss Job-specific occurrences accordingly; do not imply Job’s trust functions identically to NT saving faith in a recoverable gospel promise. See the new steadfastness_integrity entry for the complementary doctrine-label term.

Flesh

Approved rendering: शरीर
Transliteration: śarīra
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: देह (in sarx contexts)
Original: בָּשָׂר
Category: Sin (baseline domain); Mediator/Redeemer Hope (Job-specific domain)

Inherited from Romans package exactly, but flagged for a distinct Job-specific semantic domain: in Job (6:4; 7:20; 19:26) בָּשָׂר plainly denotes the literal physical body in pain, NOT the baseline’s technical Pauline sarx sense of self-reliant fallen human nature. Do not import ‘flesh vs. Spirit’ theology into Job’s dialogues.

Yhwh

Approved rendering: यहोवा
Transliteration: Yahovā
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Original: יהוה
Category: God

New term for this curriculum. Renders God’s personal covenant name יהוה, confined in Job to the narrative frame (chs. 1-2, 42) and the divine speeches (chs. 38-41), plus one dialogue exception (12:9). Distinct from the generic परमेश्वर the human debaters prefer (Eloah/Shaddai/El). This alternation is a deliberate literary-theological signal and must not be flattened by substituting परमेश्वर throughout.

Satan

Approved rendering: शैतान
Transliteration: śaitāna
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty
Rejected alternatives: दानव, असुर
Original: הַשָּׂטָן
Category: Satan’s Limited Power

New term for this curriculum, though an already-established Hindi Christian loanword. Renders הַשָּׂטָן (‘the Accuser’), a heavenly prosecutorial office-title in Job’s earliest OT usage, not yet the fully personified NT ‘Devil’ (LXX διάβολος). Avoid दानव/असुर, which import an independent Hindu demon/anti-god cosmology. The bounded-permission detail (‘only do not touch his life,’ 2:6) is the doctrine’s theological center and must survive translation on every occurrence (1:6-12; 2:1-7).

Blameless

Approved rendering: खरा
Transliteration: khārā
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Rejected alternatives: सिद्ध, निर्दोष (alone)
Original: תָּם
Category: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering

New term for this curriculum. Renders תָּם (1:1,8; 2:3), moral wholeness/integrity, not sinlessness in an absolute sense. Rejects सिद्ध (Hindu/Jain ‘spiritually perfected, self-liberated being’ connotation) and निर्दोष alone (too narrow, loses ‘wholeness’). Foundational: Job’s blamelessness is God’s own prior testimony (1:1,8), not a self-achieved status, so his suffering cannot be deserved punishment.

Justice

Approved rendering: न्याय
Transliteration: nyāya
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: מִשְׁפָּט
Category: Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice

New term for this curriculum. Renders מִשְׁפָּט, the book’s central theodicy term (Bildad’s opening question, ‘Does God pervert justice?’ 8:3). न्याय is distinct from and safe alongside धार्मिकता (righteousness) — the baseline only forbids न्याय as a substitute for righteousness itself. Occurs throughout every speech-cycle (8:3; 9:19; 19:7; 23:4; 27:2; 29:14; 31:13; 32:9; 34:4-6,12,17,23; 35:14; 36:6,17; 37:23; 40:8); consistency essential.

Wicked

Approved rendering: दुष्ट
Transliteration: duṣṭa
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Original: רָשָׁע
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged

New term for this curriculum. Renders רָשָׁע. Job’s empirical observation (ch. 21) that the wicked often prosper and die peacefully is the book’s sharpest challenge to simple retribution theology. Must render consistently (15:20; 18:5; 20:5; 21:7,16-17; 22:18; 24:6; 27:7,13; 34:8; 36:6,17; 38:13,15) since inconsistency would obscure the empirical argument, a risk compounded in Hindi where folk retribution reasoning (‘जैसा कर्म वैसा फल’) could otherwise be read as confirming, rather than being contested by, these verses.

Righteous Person

Approved rendering: धर्मी
Transliteration: dharmī
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Original: צַדִּיק
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged; Divine Justice

New term for this curriculum. Renders צַדִּיק, a person in right legal/moral standing, contrasted with wicked (רָשָׁע) throughout the debate. Reuses the baseline’s own licensed precedent (from धर्मी ठहराया जाना) for धर्मी as ‘a person in right standing,’ while धर्म alone remains forbidden as a rendering of righteousness/law.

Witness In Heaven

Approved rendering: स्वर्गीय गवाह
Transliteration: svargīya gavāha
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: साक्षी, दर्शक
Original: עֵד / שָׂהֵד
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

New term for this curriculum. Renders עֵד/שָׂהֵד (16:19), the mediator motif’s second node — a heavenly witness Job claims even now testifies on his behalf. साक्षी is rejected as the default here because it is also Advaita Vedanta’s technical term for the impersonal ‘Witness-Consciousness’ (sākṣī-caitanya); गवाह is the safer, personal-legal-witness default. दर्शक (‘mere spectator’) rejected as too passive for a legal witness.

Mediating Angel

Approved rendering: मध्यस्थ स्वर्गदूत
Transliteration: madhyastha svargadūta
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Original: מַלְאָךְ מֵלִיץ, אֶחָד מִנִּי־אָלֶף
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

New term for this curriculum. Renders מַלְאָךְ מֵלִיץ, אֶחָד מִנִּי־אָלֶף (33:23-24), Elihu’s ‘mediating angel, one among a thousand’ — the motif’s third node. Combines मध्यस्थ (mediator) with स्वर्गदूत (see sons_of_god), deliberately avoiding परमेश्वर का पुत्र, the same Critical collision documented there, since this figure is a created angelic intermediary, not the eternal Son.

Ransom

Approved rendering: छुटकारे का दाम / प्रतिफल
Transliteration: chuṭakāre kā dāma / pratiphala
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Original: כֹּפֶר
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Atonement (adjacent)

New term for this curriculum. Renders כֹּפֶר (33:24), a legal-financial price paid to avert a deserved penalty, distinct from גָּאַל’s kinship-redemption nuance. Flag the conceptual distinction from the redeemer entry in a translator’s note so the two related-but-distinct Hebrew legal concepts are not collapsed into one identical Hindi rendering.

See God

Approved rendering: देखूँगा
Transliteration: dekhūṅgā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: दर्शन
Original: אֶחֱזֶה (root חָזָה) / רָאָה
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Core Passage

New term for this curriculum — core passage. Renders אֶחֱזֶה (root חָזָה, 19:26-27), Job’s climactic hoped-for personal beholding of God. NEVER दर्शन, which carries strong devotional-Hindu connotations (a devotee’s ritual viewing of a deity’s image/presence) and would recast Job’s unique climactic hope as routine bhakti temple-practice — mirrors the baseline’s identical caution against दर्शन for ‘revelation.’ Extend this fence to every other ‘seeing/witnessing God’ passage in Job (13:24; 23:8-9).

Not A Stranger

Approved rendering: और कोई पराया नहीं
Transliteration: aura koī parāyā nahīṃ
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Original: וְלֹא־זָר
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Core Passage

New term for this curriculum — core passage. Renders וְלֹא־זָר (19:27), Job’s insistence that the one he will see is personally recognized and known, not unfamiliar. Must not be softened to a vague ‘someone else’; supports the doctrine’s culmination in unmediated, personal encounter with a known God, not impersonal appeasement of an unknown power.

Whom I Myself Shall See

Approved rendering: जिसे मैं आप देखूँगा
Transliteration: jise maiṃ āpa dekhūṅgā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Original: אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי אֶחֱזֶה־לִּי
Category: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope; Core Passage

New term for this curriculum — core passage. Renders אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי אֶחֱזֶה־לִּי (19:27a), an intensely emphatic first-person construction (doubled pronoun plus reflexive ‘for myself’). The emphatic personal construction must survive translation rather than collapsing into a flat statement, central to the doctrine’s emphasis on direct relational encounter.

Sheol

Approved rendering: अधोलोक / मृतकों का स्थान
Transliteration: adholoka / mṭtakoṃ kā sthāna
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Rejected alternatives: पाताल
Original: שְׁאוֹל
Category: Problem of Suffering; Mediator/Redeemer Hope (contrast term)

New term for this curriculum. Renders שְׁאוֹל, the shadowy OT underworld realm common to all the dead, not a place of reward/punishment. NEVER पाताल, a specific, populated Hindu mythological netherworld inhabited by nāgas and asuras. Must remain consistent across every occurrence (3:13; 7:9; 10:21-22; 14:13; 17:13-16; 26:5-6) since Sheol functions as the contrast-term against which ch. 19’s Redeemer Hope moves toward more than mere Sheol-rest.

Pervert Justice

Approved rendering: अन्याय करना
Transliteration: anyāya karanā
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: עָוַת
Category: Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice

New term for this curriculum. Renders עָוַת (19:6), Job’s direct accusation that God ‘has wronged’ him — the sharpest challenge yet to divine justice, immediately preceding the Redeemer-hope confession in the same chapter. Must not be softened; Job’s protest-language is load-bearing for the Faith-and-Integrity doctrine, which includes honest complaint as compatible with faith.

Spirit Of Insight

Approved rendering: समझने की आत्मा (परमेश्वर की ओर से)
Transliteration: samajhane kī ātmā (Parameśvara kī ora se)
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: पवित्र आत्मा (unqualified default)
Original: רוּחַ
Category: Sovereignty of God (adjacent); Wisdom

New term for this curriculum. Renders Elihu’s רוּחַ (32:8: ‘there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding’; 33:4), the God-given breath/life-principle granting human understanding, distinct from the hypostatic Holy Spirit. Mandatory translator’s note distinguishing this general endowment from the baseline’s Critical holy_spirit doctrine on every occurrence.

Steadfastness Integrity

Approved rendering: दृढ़ता
Transliteration: dṛḍhatā
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering

New supporting term for this curriculum’s doctrine label, distinct from विश्वास. Names sustained trust-without-resolution (13:15’s crux; ch. 31’s cumulative self-defense) as a standalone concept, since the baseline’s विश्वास is defined as trust in a specific person with a recoverable object — Job’s posture is broader, encompassing persistent complaint alongside trust.

Search Out

Approved rendering: थाह लेना / खोज करना
Transliteration: thāha lenā / khoja karanā
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders חָקַר (11:7; 5:27; 28:27; 38:16), the recurring ‘can you fathom’ rhetorical structure central to the incomprehensibility doctrine. Zophar’s use is accusatory, but the divine speeches later affirm the underlying claim as simply true, not a rebuke reserved for Job alone.

Will He Live Again

Approved rendering: यदि मनुष्य मर जाए, तो क्या वह फिर जीवित होगा?
Transliteration: yadi manuṣya mara jāe, to kyā vaha phira jīvita hogā?
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope

New term for this curriculum. Renders 14:14’s אִם־יָמוּת … הֲיִחְיֶה, Job’s open resurrection-hope question — the seed that flowers into the confident assertion of 19:25. Must remain phrased as Job’s genuine open question at this point in the book; the translation must let the book’s argument develop, not collapse ch. 14 into ch. 19’s later confidence. Never use पुनर्जन्म.

Fear Of The Lord Is Wisdom

Approved rendering: प्रभु का भय ही बुद्धि है
Transliteration: Prabhu kā bhaya hī buddhi hai
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders 28:28’s programmatic axiom (יִרְאַת אֲדֹנָי הִיא חָכְמָה), the book’s own resolution of the wisdom-search: true wisdom is reverent relationship with God, not intellectual achievement. Reuses प्रभु (inherited lord entry) and भय/बुद्धि (fear_of_god, wisdom entries); this is a load-bearing summary verse for the whole curriculum’s pedagogical arc.

Can Man Be Righteous Before God

Approved rendering: क्या मनुष्य परमेश्वर से अधिक धर्मी हो सकता है?
Transliteration: kyā manuṣya Parameśvara se adhika dharmī ho sakatā hai?
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged

New term for this curriculum. Renders 4:17/9:2/25:4’s recurring challenge (אֱנוֹשׁ … מֵאֱלוֹהַ יִצְדָּק), the foundational premise of the friends’ retribution theology — that no human can claim innocence before God, therefore suffering must be deserved. This premise is precisely what the whole book contests; render with full argumentative force, not softened.

Medium Risk Terms

Hypocrisy

Approved rendering: कपट
Transliteration: kapaṭa
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Original: (cognate to חָנֵף)
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged

Inherited from the Galatians hypocrisy entry exactly. Applied in Job to Zophar’s חָנֵף accusation (20:5) rather than Peter’s table-fellowship withdrawal; see the new godless_hypocrite entry for the specific noun form.

Intercession

Approved rendering: मध्यस्थता
Transliteration: madhyasthatā
Doctrine: The Mediator/Redeemer Hope
Rejected alternatives: शफाअत
Original: פָּלַל
Category: Mediator/Redeemer Hope (narrative resolution); Repentance and Restoration

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Renders פָּלַל at 42:8,10, Job’s prayer for his friends — the narrative resolution of the whole Mediator/Redeemer motif: the one who longed for a mediator becomes, modestly, a mediating intercessor himself.

Upright

Approved rendering: सीधा / धर्मी
Transliteration: sīdhā / dharmī
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Original: יָשָׁר
Category: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering

New term for this curriculum. Renders יָשָׁר, paired with תָּם as a stock covenant-faithfulness phrase (1:1,8). धर्मी is licensed here by the baseline’s own justification-compound precedent (धर्मी ठहराया जाना) for ‘a person in right standing’; धर्म alone remains forbidden.

Fear Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का भय
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā bhaya
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Rejected alternatives: भय अकेला (unqualified)
Original: יִרְאַת אֱלֹהִים / יִרְאַת אֲדֹנָי
Category: Faith and Integrity; Wisdom

New term for this curriculum. Renders יִרְאַת אֱלֹהִים/יִרְאַת אֲדֹנָי (1:1; 28:28). Must convey reverential awe combined with obedient life-orientation, distinct from Hindu bhakti’s reciprocal fear-love devotional exchange (bhay-bhakti), which operates on an appeasement/reciprocal-favor logic foreign to Job’s covenant relationship with the one true God.

Dust

Approved rendering: मिट्टी / धूल
Transliteration: miṭṭī / dhūla
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration
Original: עָפָר
Category: Mediator/Redeemer Hope (19:25); Repentance and Restoration (42:6)

New term for this curriculum. Renders עָפָר (19:25; 42:6’s ‘dust and ashes’), frequently associated with mortality and the grave (Genesis 3:19). Retain the mortality resonance rather than flattening to a generic ‘ground/earth’ — this resonance matters both at the core passage and at the repentance hinge verse.

Wisdom

Approved rendering: बुद्धि
Transliteration: buddhi
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: ज्ञान, प्रज्ञा
Original: חָכְמָה
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders חָכְמָה (12:12; the dedicated poem of ch. 28; 28:28’s programmatic definition). The established Hindi Bible rendering; rejects ज्ञान (over-weighted toward jnana-marga liberating-knowledge associations) and प्रज्ञा (strong Buddhist technical-term association). बुद्धि also names a faculty in Samkhya-Vedanta psychology (buddhi-tattva); clarify biblical wisdom is relational (28:28), not an innate faculty cultivated through meditation.

Behemoth

Approved rendering: बेहेमोथ
Transliteration: behemoth
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Rejected alternatives: जल-हस्ती (hippopotamus gloss)
Original: בְּהֵמוֹת
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Transliterated rendering of בְּהֵמוֹת (40:15-24), evidence of God’s sovereign mastery over what humans cannot master. A translator’s note must clarify this is a real or quasi-real created animal under God’s mastery, not to be assimilated to any Hindu mythological creature, avatar, or Puranic beast.

Leviathan

Approved rendering: लिव्यातान
Transliteration: livyātāna
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Original: לִוְיָתָן
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Transliterated rendering of לִוְיָתָן (ch. 41), the climactic illustration of untamable power nonetheless entirely subject to God. Do not associate with Hindu serpent-cosmology figures such as Shesha Naga or Vasuki, which carry a stabilizing/supportive cosmic function opposite to Leviathan’s chaos-monster-subdued-by-God role.

Founding Earth

Approved rendering: नींव डालना / स्थापित करना
Transliteration: nīṃva ḍālanā / sthāpita karanā
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Original: יָסַד
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders יָסַד (38:4), the whirlwind speech’s opening rhetorical question (‘Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?’). This recurring rhetorical-question structure (chs. 38-41) must retain its unanswerable, humbling force rather than implying a ‘correct’ human answer.

Burnt Offering

Approved rendering: होमबलि
Transliteration: homabali
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration
Original: עוֹלָה
Category: Worship/Ritual (Job-specific, supporting)

New term for this curriculum. Renders עוֹלָה (1:5; 42:8), a wholly-consumed literal cultic sacrifice offered by the friends at God’s command, with Job interceding for them. Distinct semantic domain from the baseline’s Romans 12:1 living_sacrifice caution against बलि/यज्ञ, which applies only to metaphorical ‘living sacrifice’ language; Job 42:8 intends a literal sacrifice, so होमबलि is standard and appropriate here.

Approved rendering: मुक़दमा / विवाद
Transliteration: muqadamā / vivāda
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: רִיב
Category: Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice

New term for this curriculum. Renders רִיב (23:3-7), Job’s wish to formally present his ‘case’ before God as before a court. Reinforces the recurring legal/courtroom metaphor running from the mediator entry (9:33) through the redeemer entry (19:25) to the oath entry (ch. 31).

The Poor

Approved rendering: दीन / दरिद्र
Transliteration: dīna / daridra
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: עָנִי
Category: Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice

New term for this curriculum. Renders עָנִי (ch. 24; 29:12-17; 31:16-23), socioeconomically vulnerable persons whose oppression by the wicked Job cites as evidence against simple retribution theology. Must read as descriptive social-economic vulnerability, not acquire an unintended caste-associated connotation of deserved low-birth status.

Discipline

Approved rendering: ताड़ना / शिक्षा
Transliteration: tāṛanā / śikṣā
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Original: מוּסָר
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged

New term for this curriculum. Renders מוּסָר (5:17; developed further at ch. 36), Eliphaz’s milder retribution variant — corrective instruction, sometimes painful but constructive, though Eliphaz still applies it accusingly to Job. Distinguish from purely punitive retribution proper.

Godless Hypocrite

Approved rendering: कपटी / अधर्मी
Transliteration: kapaṭī / adharmī
Doctrine: Retribution Theology Challenged
Original: חָנֵף
Category: Retribution Theology Challenged

New term for this curriculum. Renders חָנֵף (20:5), one inwardly irreligious/impious despite outward function; Zophar’s term for the wicked whose prosperity he insists is only temporary. कपटी reuses the कपट root licensed by the baseline’s Galatians hypocrisy entry.

Oath

Approved rendering: शपथ
Transliteration: śapatha
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering
Rejected alternatives: श्राप (reserved for pronounced curses)
Original: אָלָה
Category: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering

New term for this curriculum. Renders אָלָה (27:2ff.; ch. 31’s extended oath of innocence), a self-imprecatory legal oath. Reserve श्राप exclusively for the pronounced-curse sense (see the inherited curse entry); Job’s oaths are self-binding legal assertions of innocence, not curses pronounced on another.

Mortal Man

Approved rendering: मनुष्य / मरणशील मनुष्य
Transliteration: manuṣya / maraṇaśīla manuṣya
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: אֱנוֹשׁ
Category: Problem of Suffering; Retribution Theology Challenged

New term for this curriculum. Renders אֱנוֹשׁ (4:17; 25:4), frail mortal humanity underlying the friends’ recurring ‘can mortal man be righteous before God?’ challenge. Keep the fragility/mortality nuance rather than a neutral ‘person.‘

Human Honor

Approved rendering: प्रतिष्ठा / सम्मान
Transliteration: pratiṣṭhā / sammāna
Doctrine: The Problem of Suffering and Divine Justice
Original: כָּבוֹד (human sense)
Category: Problem of Suffering

New term for this curriculum. Renders כָּבוֹד in its human sense (19:9; recalled at 29:1-25), Job’s own social standing/dignity, stripped away by his suffering. Distinguish explicitly from the inherited glory entry’s divine-radiance sense so readers do not assume Deity-of-Christ-adjacent theology is in view.

Miserable Comforters

Approved rendering: दुःखदायक शान्तिदाता / झूठी सान्त्वना देनेवाले
Transliteration: duḥkhadāyaka śāntidātā / jhūṭhī sāntvanā denevāle
Doctrine: Faith and Integrity amid Suffering

New term for this curriculum. Renders מְנַחֲמֵי עָמָל (16:2), Job’s ironic naming of his friends’ failed comfort. Needed to distinguish counterfeit, accusatory comfort from genuine सांत्वना elsewhere in Scripture.

Counsel

Approved rendering: सम्मति / मंसा / योजना
Transliteration: sammati / maṃsā / yojanā
Doctrine: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders עֵצָה (38:2, ‘who is this that darkens counsel’), opening the divine speeches. Needs a stable rendering distinct from generic ‘advice’ to carry the weight of God’s own purposive plan being obscured by ignorant speech.

Curse God And Die

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर को शाप दे और मर जा
Transliteration: Parameśvara ko śāpa de aura mara jā
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty

New term for this curriculum. Renders 2:9’s קַלֵּל אֱלֹהִים וָמֻת, Job’s wife’s counsel of despair. Reuses the inherited curse-family vocabulary (श्राप) and sets up the euphemistic use of ‘bless’ for ‘curse’ recurring at 1:5,11 and 2:5,9.

Low Risk Terms

Understanding

Approved rendering: समझ
Transliteration: samajha
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Original: תְּבוּנָה
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders תְּבוּנָה, a near-synonym of חָכְמָה, paired with it throughout ch. 28.

Whirlwind

Approved rendering: झंझावात / तूफ़ान
Transliteration: jhaṃjhāvāta / tūfāna
Doctrine: The Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God
Original: סְעָרָה
Category: Sovereignty and Incomprehensibility of God

New term for this curriculum. Renders סְעָרָה (38:1; 40:6), the storm setting from which the LORD finally speaks. Low doctrinal collision risk.

Skin For Skin

Approved rendering: चमड़ी के बदले चमड़ी
Transliteration: camaṛī ke badale camaṛī
Doctrine: Satan’s Limited Power under God’s Sovereignty

New term for this curriculum. Renders 2:4’s obscure proverbial idiom עוֹר בְּעוֹר, Satan’s cynical second-challenge claim that self-preservation motivates all apparent piety. Retained literally with an explanatory gloss note, since no natural Hindi equivalent conveys the same cynicism.

Doubling Of Fortunes

Approved rendering: दो गुना
Transliteration: do gunā
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration

New term for this curriculum. Renders מִשְׁנֶה (42:10), the literal doubling of Job’s former possessions, emphasizing the completeness of God’s restorative grace. Provided the restoration doctrine’s Critical framing (repent_or_comforted, restoration) governs the surrounding interpretive context, this term itself carries low translation risk as plain narrative description.
