Core Glossary

Core Glossary: 1 Samuel

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all 31 chapters of 1 Samuel, with citation, risk tier, and Hindi rendering. Terms marked “(reused)” are already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json and MUST be used exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are proposed for these. All new terms are proposed in a manner designed never to contradict the baseline.

Risk tier definitions (per baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json):

  • Critical — mistranslation destroys/alters essential doctrine; mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
  • High — significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; mandatory theologian review.
  • Medium — reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — minor imprecision; automated review sufficient.

Cross-Cutting Risk Notes for Phase 2

  1. Group C (Kingship/Anointing) and Group D5 (obedience-vs-sacrifice thesis) carry the highest doctrinal density in the book and should receive priority in back-translation QA.
  2. Terms shared with the Romans/Galatians baseline (Groups A2–A3, B1–B2, D7, D10, D14–D15, F4–F5, F6, G2, G6-related खतना, H3, H6, K3, K15) must be checked programmatically against translation_memory.json before any new 1 Samuel-specific entry is finalized, to guarantee zero contradiction.
  3. New Critical entries requiring mandatory theologian review at every occurrence: A1 (यहोवा), A8 (नाचम/पछताना), C3 (अभिषिक्त vs. मसीह boundary), C6, C8 (अस्वीकार करना), D1/D5 (बलिदान/obedience thesis), D11 (हेरम), E1 (यहोवा का आत्मा), E4 (डरना/भय), G3 (यहोवा के युद्ध), H1 (भूत-सिद्धि), H2 (अधोलोक, never पाताल).
  4. Terms requiring a mandatory accompanying translator note (per the AI Translation Requirements’ footnote convention): C3/C5 boundary; A8 (नाचम’s two senses in the same chapter); D1/D2 (ritual-sacrifice vs. Hindu homa/yajna); H1/H2 (occult/Sheol vs. Indian cosmology); F1 (chesed’s untranslatability).

See 07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-by-verse (core passage) and chapter-by-chapter argumentation supporting every entry above.

Critical Risk Terms

Salvation

Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. RESERVED in 1 Samuel exclusively for typological/contrastive teaching commentary about Christ’s spiritual salvation; NEVER applied to the book’s national/military deliverances (see national_deliverance entry, which uses रक्षा/बचाना instead).

Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Renders אֲדֹנָי (Adonai) throughout 1 Samuel. Must remain lexically distinct from यहोवा (the personal covenant name, YHWH) and परमेश्वर (Elohim, generic ‘God’).

God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Renders אֱלֹהִים (Elohim) throughout 1 Samuel. Kept lexically distinct from यहोवा (YHWH) and प्रभु (Adonai) so the doctrine of God’s specific, self-revealing covenant identity is not flattened into a generic Hindi term for ‘the divine.‘

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Cited in 1 Samuel translator notes as the same divine Person continuous with यहोवा का आत्मा (Spirit of the LORD) — see spirit_of_the_lord entry — using the OT narrative’s own idiom rather than the fuller NT designation, but never suggesting a different or impersonal being.

Messiah

Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: Masīha
Doctrine: The Anointed King as a Type of the Messiah
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त व्यक्ति, देव-दूत

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. ABSOLUTELY RESERVED for the eschatological/technical Christ referent. NEVER applied to Saul or David within the 1 Samuel narrative text — see anointed_one_historical for the required historical-office term (अभिषिक्त). This is the single highest-stakes lexical boundary in this curriculum.

Propitiation

Approved rendering: प्रायश्चित्त
Transliteration: prāyaścitta
Doctrine: Atonement
Rejected alternatives: तुष्टीकरण

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Cited in 1 Samuel only to distinguish it from the guilt_offering entry (אָשָׁם, asham, ch. 6): asham names a literal OT ritual category, never to be conflated with this NT Christological atonement term.

Yahweh

Approved rendering: यहोवा
Transliteration: Yahowā
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Name and Personal Presence
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान, प्रभु (reserved for Adonai), परमेश्वर (reserved for Elohim)
Original: יהוה
Category: God

New entry for this OT curriculum; the established BSI OV rendering of the Tetragrammaton. Must remain lexically distinct from प्रभु (Adonai) and परमेश्वर (Elohim) so the doctrine of God’s specific, self-revealing covenant identity is not flattened into a generic Hindi religious term for ‘the divine.’ Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.

Divine Regret

Approved rendering: पछताना / मन बदलना
Transliteration: pachatānā / mana badalanā
Doctrine: Divine Providence and the Language of Divine Regret
Original: נָחַם
Category: God

נָחַם (nacham), 15:11,35 (‘the LORD regretted’), qualified by 15:29’s denial that God is ‘a man, that he should change his mind’ (same root, different sense). पछताना used for the accommodated grief-language of vv.11,35; बदलना/मन बदलना for the explicit denial of fickleness in v.29. MANDATORY theologian review and translator note at every occurrence, explaining this is anthropopathic language about God’s grief-response to sin, not a change in his unchanging character or foreknowledge. High risk of assimilation to Hindu devotional narratives of appeasable, changeable deities.

Anointed One Historical

Approved rendering: अभिषिक्त
Transliteration: abhiṣikta
Doctrine: The Anointed King as a Type of the Messiah
Rejected alternatives: मसीह (reserved exclusively for Christ)
Original: מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Messianic Typology

מָשִׁיחַ (mashiach) applied to Saul/David (2:10,35; 12:3,5; 16:6; 24:6,10; 26:9,11,16,23). NEW COINAGE, never मसीह. If collapsed into मसीह, the doctrinal category ‘Messiah’ dilutes to ‘any anointed Israelite king,’ undermining Christ’s uniqueness. Typological connection taught in prose commentary only, never lexically merged. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. Gloss on first occurrence (2:10) as ‘अभिषेक किया गया राजा.‘

Anoint Verb

Approved rendering: अभिषेक करना
Transliteration: abhiṣeka karanā
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Original: מָשַׁח
Category: Messianic Typology

מָשַׁח (mashach), the pivotal verb of chs. 9-10, 15-16, 24, 26. Must be rendered identically at every occurrence (9:16; 10:1; 15:1,17; 16:3,12,13; 24:6,10; 26:9,11,16,23) so the reader tracks Saul’s anointing, its revocation-in-effect, and David’s anointing as one coherent theological thread.

The Lords Anointed Title

Approved rendering: यहोवा का अभिषिक्त
Transliteration: Yahowā kā abhiṣikta
Doctrine: Reverence for the LORD’s Anointed
Original: מְשִׁיחַ יהוה
Category: Messianic Typology

מְשִׁיחַ יהוה (meshiach YHWH), the formal royal title first articulated at 12:3,5, invoked by David’s refusal to harm Saul (24:6,10; 26:9,11,16,23). Built on अभिषिक्त; must remain distinct from मसीह. Teaches reverence for the divinely-established office even under a personally disqualified holder — anticipating, not equating to, the true King’s inviolable holiness.

Reject Ma As

Approved rendering: अस्वीकार करना
Transliteration: asvīkāra karanā
Doctrine: The Danger of Rejecting God as King
Rejected alternatives: ठुकराना (acceptable synonym but must not be mixed inconsistently with अस्वीकार करना), अनसुना कर देना, अस्वीकृत करना (variant form, avoid mixing), था नाराज़/असंतुष्ट था (softened alternatives, forbidden)
Original: מָאַס
Category: Kingship

מָאַס (ma’as), the central verb of this doctrine, describing both Israel rejecting God (8:7) and God rejecting Saul (15:23,26; 16:1,7) — a deliberate lexical mirror. MUST be rendered identically at every occurrence across the whole book. Never soften to ‘was displeased with,’ ‘set aside,’ or ‘turned away from.’ Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.

Sacrifice Zevach

Approved rendering: बलिदान
Transliteration: balidāna
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: זֶבַח
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

זֶבַח (zevach), a literal Mosaic-covenant sacrifice — Samuel’s cover errand (16:2) and central to the ch. 15 thesis. Distinct from the baseline’s NT metaphorical living_sacrifice (जीवित बलिदान). Risk: readers may import Hindu yajna/homa assumptions of ritual efficacy or merit-transfer. Mandatory translator note distinguishing ‘literal covenant sacrifice under the Law, not merit-earning ritual.‘

Obey Shama

Approved rendering: सुनना / आज्ञा मानना
Transliteration: sunanā / ājñā mānanā
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: שָׁמַע
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

שָׁמַע (shama) — Hebrew has no separate word for ‘obey’; hearing a covenant command IS obeying it. Thesis-term of 15:22, first substantially appearing at 12:14-15. Render consistently (paired) from ch. 12 through ch. 15 so the semantic link between ‘hearing’ and ‘obeying’ is not lost.

Obedience Better Than Sacrifice

Approved rendering: सुनना बलिदान से उत्तम है
Transliteration: sunanā balidāna se uttama hai
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: טוֹב… מִזֶּבַח שְׁמֹעַ
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

טוֹב…מִזֶּבַח שְׁמֹעַ (15:22), the thesis-verse of this doctrine. The Hindi must preserve the exact comparative structure, never loosened into presenting obedience and sacrifice as two equally valid options. India’s ritual-performance environment (yajna, puja, vrata) makes this verse especially vulnerable. Mandatory theologian review.

Spirit Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का आत्मा
Transliteration: Yahowā kā ātmā
Doctrine: The Spirit of the LORD and Empowerment for Service
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
Original: רוּחַ־יהוה
Category: Spirit and Heart

רוּחַ־יהוה (ruach-YHWH), the personal, divine, empowering presence active for leadership/prophecy/deliverance (10:6,10; 11:6; 16:13; departs at 16:14). Theologically continuous with the reused baseline पवित्र आत्मा (same divine Person across Testaments) but preserving the OT’s own idiom. Never an impersonal force, never bhoot/pretatma folk-possession. The permanence marker at 16:13 (‘from that day forward,’ उस दिन से लेकर आगे तक) contrasting with its withdrawal from Saul (16:14) must never be flattened.

Fear Yare

Approved rendering: डरना / भय
Transliteration: ḍaranā / bhaya
Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)
Original: יָרֵא
Category: Spirit and Heart

יָרֵא (yare), ranging from sinful fear-of-man/danger (Samuel’s fear of Saul, 16:2; Israel’s army before Goliath, 17:11,24) to reverential fear-of-the-LORD elsewhere. Context must disambiguate which sense is active; chs. 16-17 must read unambiguously as the negative, paralyzing sense for the doctrine’s contrast with David’s faith to register.

Battles Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा के युद्ध
Transliteration: Yahowā ke yuddha
Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)
Original: מִלְחֲמוֹת יהוה
Category: Warfare and Deliverance

מִלְחֲמוֹת יהוה (milchamot YHWH), David’s thesis-claim ‘the battle is the LORD’s’ (17:47). Must retain declarative, confident force; do not soften into a general statement about divine help alongside human effort.

Medium Necromancer

Approved rendering: भूत-सिद्धि करनेवाली स्त्री
Transliteration: bhūta-siddhi karanevālī strī
Doctrine: The Peril of Occult Practice
Rejected alternatives: तांत्रिक (borrows a specific, tradition-loaded technical term), ज्योतिषी (wrong category — astrology, not necromancy)
Original: אוֹב
Category: Occult and Judgment

אוֹב (ov), forbidden under the Law (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6); Saul consults one at Endor (28:7-25). Occult mediumship is a live, widely practiced phenomenon in the Indian context (tantra, bhoot-siddhi, planchette practices); the text’s catastrophic verdict must not be softened. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.

Sheol

Approved rendering: अधोलोक (मृतकों का स्थान)
Transliteration: adholoka (mṛtakoṃ kā sthāna)
Doctrine: The Peril of Occult Practice
Rejected alternatives: पाताल (Puranic Patala-loka, the netherworld realm of nagas — absolutely forbidden)
Original: שְׁאוֹל
Category: Occult and Judgment

שְׁאוֹל (Sheol), the realm/abode of the dead (28:13-15), not yet the fully differentiated heaven/hell of later revelation. NEVER पाताल, which carries specific, unrelated Puranic cosmological content. Mandatory translator note clarifying Sheol is not identical to any culturally-specific Indian cosmological realm.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used in 1 Samuel only for cross-reference/contrast when teaching covenant_loyalty_chesed (20:14-15), to show why חֶסֶד must NOT be rendered अनुग्रह: chesed is covenant-loyalty between persons, not the soteriological unmerited-favor category this term protects.

Faith

Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, आस्था, भरोसा

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reused for David’s trust in YHWH (בָּטַח, batach, 17:37) rather than introducing भरोसा, keeping David’s trust-in-a-specific-person dynamic doctrinally continuous with the NT faith doctrine this OT narrative anticipates. See trust_batach entry below.

Holy

Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मल

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applied to the ark’s sacred status (6:19-20), holy bread (21:1-6), and general covenant holiness. Must not narrow to ritual-purity-only connotations (शुद्ध/shuddhi); this is moral-relational set-apartness before a personal God.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: सफाई, शुद्धिकरण

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Cited in 1 Samuel only for contrast with the occasion-specific ritual consecration קִדֵּשׁ (qiddesh, 16:5) — see consecrate_qiddesh entry — which is a one-time ceremonial preparation, not this ongoing Spirit-worked doctrine.

Prophet

Approved rendering: भविष्यद्वक्ता
Transliteration: bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: Samuel’s Role as Prophet and Judge
Rejected alternatives: ज्योतिषी
Original: נָבִיא
Category: Prophetic Office

Inherited from Romans package; risk elevated from the baseline’s Low tier to High in this curriculum because Samuel’s prophetic office (3:20) is structurally central to legitimating the anointing/deposing of kings. Never confuse with ज्योतिषी (astrologer/fortune-teller).

Covenant

Approved rendering: वाचा
Transliteration: vācā
Doctrine: Covenant Loyalty and Friendship
Rejected alternatives: अनुबंध, समझौता

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used for the Ark of the Covenant (वाचा का सन्दूक, chs. 4-6) and for Jonathan and David’s covenant-friendship (18:3; 20:8,16).

Election

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का चुनाव
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā cunāva
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति, किस्मत

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Renders בָּחַר (bachar) at David’s selection (16:8-10). The sevenfold repeated formula ‘यहोवा ने इसे नहीं चुना’ must be rendered identically at every repetition to preserve the escalating narrative suspense.

Sin

Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Divine Judgment on Corrupt Religious Leadership
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Underlies Eli’s sons’ corruption (ch. 2) and Saul’s disobedience (chs. 13, 15) as moral transgression before a personal God, not ritual impurity or bad karma.

Idolatry

Approved rendering: मूर्तिपूजा
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Gods (Dagon)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applied to Dagon-worship (ch. 5). Handle pastorally in Hindu-background contexts but do not soften the narrative’s clear verdict of YHWH’s incomparable supremacy.

Repentance

Approved rendering: मन फिराव
Transliteration: mana phirāva
Doctrine: Samuel’s Role as Prophet and Judge
Rejected alternatives: पश्चाताप

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Renders שׁוּב (shuv) at Samuel’s call to Israel to turn from idols at Mizpah (7:3-6).

Wrath Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का क्रोध
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā krodha
Doctrine: Divine Judgment on Corrupt Religious Leadership
Rejected alternatives: बदला

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Governs the implicit judgment throughout 1 Samuel (on Eli’s house, on Dagon/the Philistines, on Saul); never personal revenge (बदला, used correctly elsewhere in this book only for condemned HUMAN vengeance — see vengeance_naqam) or capricious anger.

Sovereignty

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की संप्रभुता
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī samprabhutā
Doctrine: Divine Providence and the Language of Divine Regret
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Governs the reading of Saul’s entire downward narrative (chs. 13-31); ties to the divine_regret entry so 15:11/15:35’s נָחַם is never read as evidence of a changeable God.

Providence

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का विधान
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā vidhāna
Doctrine: Divine Providence and the Language of Divine Regret
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, कर्म का नियम

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Never भाग्य (fate) or karma language; anchors the mandatory translator note required at every occurrence of divine_regret (15:11,29,35).

Kingship Of Jesus

Approved rendering: यीशु का राजत्व
Transliteration: Yīśu kā rājatva
Doctrine: The Anointed King as a Type of the Messiah

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used ONLY in typological teaching commentary connecting David’s kingship forward to Christ’s eternal kingship; never applied within the translated 1 Samuel narrative text itself.

Sorcery

Approved rendering: जादू-टोना
Transliteration: jādū-ṭonā
Doctrine: The Peril of Occult Practice

Inherited from Romans/Galatians package, unchanged. Applied by extension to the necromancy of ch. 28 alongside the new divination_qesem and medium_necromancer entries.

Living Sacrifice

Approved rendering: जीवित बलिदान
Transliteration: jīvita balidāna
Doctrine: Consecration
Rejected alternatives: बलि, यज्ञ

Inherited from Galatians/Romans package, unchanged. Cited in 1 Samuel only to distinguish it from sacrifice_zevach: the baseline term names a NT metaphor deliberately avoiding बलि/यज्ञ, whereas 1 Samuel’s बलिदान names a real, literal Israelite cultic act under the Law.

Lord Of Hosts

Approved rendering: यहोवा सेनाओं का परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Yahowā senāoṃ kā Parameśvara
Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)
Rejected alternatives: सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर (generic ‘Almighty,’ loses military-sovereignty content)
Original: יהוה צְבָאוֹת
Category: God

First occurs 1:3,11; climactic at 17:45 (David’s rebuttal to Goliath). Must not be flattened to a generic honorific; ties to परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य (baseline power_of_god family).

Word Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का वचन
Transliteration: Yahowā kā vacana
Doctrine: The Prophetic Call and the Word of the LORD
Original: דְּבַר־יהוה
Category: God

3:1’s ‘the word of the LORD was rare’ sets the stage for Samuel’s prophetic renewal. Must read as objective divine disclosure to a commissioned prophet, not a devotee’s self-attained mystical insight (parallels the baseline’s caution on प्रकाशन, never दर्शन/साक्षात्कार).

Seer

Approved rendering: भविष्यद्रष्टा
Transliteration: bhaviṣyadraṣṭā
Doctrine: Samuel’s Role as Prophet and Judge
Rejected alternatives: दर्शी, दृष्टा
Original: רֹאֶה
Category: Prophetic Office

רֹאֶה (ro’eh), 9:9’s own gloss: ‘the prophet was formerly called a seer.’ Coined parallel to the reused भविष्यद्वक्ता; NEVER दर्शी/दृष्टा, which collide with the Hindu rishi’s self-attained meditative darshan-vision. Mandatory translator note at first occurrence (9:9) distinguishing this as an old title for the same divinely-commissioned office, not mystical self-realization.

King

Approved rendering: राजा
Transliteration: rājā
Doctrine: The Transition from Judges to Monarchy
Original: מֶלֶךְ
Category: Kingship

מֶלֶךְ (melek). Lexically simple but doctrinally loaded: Indian cultural memory of sacrally-legitimated, largely unaccountable kingship is the OPPOSITE of Israel’s covenantally-accountable monarchy. No substitute term exists; require accompanying commentary at every major occurrence (chs. 8, 10, 12, 15) asserting subordination to परमेश्वर का राज्य.

Kingdom Kingship

Approved rendering: राज्य / राजत्व
Transliteration: rājya / rājatva
Doctrine: The Transition from Judges to Monarchy
Original: מַמְלָכָה / מְלוּכָה
Category: Kingship

מַמְלָכָה / מְלוּכָה. 13:14 declares Saul’s kingdom ‘will not continue.’ Shares a root with the reused baseline राज्य (kingdom_of_god); must be distinguished contextually as a specific, revocable human dynasty, not God’s own eternal reign.

Man After Gods Own Heart

Approved rendering: अपने ही मन का मनुष्य
Transliteration: apane hī mana kā manuṣya
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Original: אִישׁ כִּלְבָבוֹ
Category: Kingship

אִישׁ כִּלְבָבוֹ (ish kilvavo), 13:14 — proleptically names David’s qualifying criterion before he is introduced by name. Must be cross-referenced explicitly with the हृदय (heart) criterion of 16:7 in teaching material.

Burnt Offering

Approved rendering: होमबलि
Transliteration: homabali
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: עוֹלָה
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

עוֹלָה (olah), an offering wholly consumed by fire; Saul’s unauthorized burnt offering (13:9-12) usurps priestly/prophetic prerogative. Risk of evoking Hindu homa/havan fire-ritual efficacy; mandatory translator note clarifying this is the Israelite Mosaic burnt offering under covenant law, not a parallel efficacious fire-rite.

Ark Of The Covenant

Approved rendering: वाचा का सन्दूक
Transliteration: vācā kā sandūka
Doctrine: The Departure of God’s Glory (Ichabod)
Original: אֲרוֹן (הַבְּרִית)
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

אֲרוֹן (הַבְּרִית), the sacred chest of God’s manifest presence (chs. 4-6). Built on the reused baseline वाचा. Must never be presented as a magical object whose mere presence secures divine favor — Israel’s superstitious ark-handling (ch. 4) foreshadows the obedience-versus-ritual theme of ch. 15.

Devoted To Destruction Cherem

Approved rendering: सर्वनाश के लिये अर्पित करना
Transliteration: sarvanāśa ke liye arpita karanā
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: חֵרֶם
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

חֵרֶם (cherem), the command against Amalek Saul disobeys (ch. 15). Mandatory theologian review; must not be presented apart from its unique redemptive-historical, covenant-lawsuit context (Amalek’s specific hostility, Exodus 17; Deuteronomy 25) or as a general ethical norm for warfare.

Divination Qesem

Approved rendering: तंत्र-मंत्र
Transliteration: tantra-mantra
Doctrine: The Peril of Occult Practice
Rejected alternatives: भावी कथन (softens the shock of the equation)
Original: קֶסֶם
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

קֶסֶם (qesem), forbidden occult means of hidden knowledge; shockingly equated with rebellion at 15:23. Ties to the baseline’s जादू-टोना (sorcery) family; the rhetorical shock must not be softened.

Rebellion Meri

Approved rendering: बलवा / विद्रोह
Transliteration: balavā / vidroha
Doctrine: The Danger of Rejecting God as King
Original: מְרִי / מָרַד
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

מְרִי / מָרַד (meri/marad), covenant defiance against YHWH’s rule (12:15; 15:23). Tightly linked to, but lexically distinct from, reject_ma_as: this describes the CHARACTER of the rejection (the covenant-legal charge), not the ACT of rejecting a person/office.

Evil Spirit

Approved rendering: दुष्ट आत्मा
Transliteration: duṣṭa ātmā
Doctrine: The Spirit of the LORD and Empowerment for Service
Original: רוּחַ רָעָה
Category: Spirit and Heart

רוּחַ רָעָה (ruach ra’ah), a tormenting spirit permitted by God as an instrument of judgment upon Saul (16:14; 18:10; 19:9). Must not be confused with यहोवा का आत्मा, nor assimilated to generic Hindu bhoot/pretatma folk-possession categories; context must show this spirit operates only within, and under, YHWH’s sovereign permission.

Heart Lev

Approved rendering: हृदय
Transliteration: hṛdaya
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Rejected alternatives: दिल (too narrowly emotional/sentimental)
Original: לֵב / לֵבָב
Category: Spirit and Heart

לֵב / לֵבָב (lev/levav), the seat of will, intellect, moral character, and hidden motive — broader than emotion. The doctrinal center of the core passage (16:7). Requires a translator note explaining the Hebrew’s fuller cognitive-volitional breadth for catechetical material.

Trust Batach

Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)
Rejected alternatives: भरोसा (explicitly rejected by the baseline faith entry)
Original: בָּטַח
Category: Spirit and Heart

בָּטַח (batach), David’s confident reliance on YHWH’s character and prior deliverances (17:37). Aligned with the reused baseline विश्वास rather than भरोसा for doctrinal continuity with the NT faith doctrine.

Covenant Loyalty Chesed

Approved rendering: स्थिर प्रेम
Transliteration: sthira prema
Doctrine: Covenant Loyalty and Friendship (Chesed)
Rejected alternatives: अनुग्रह (soteriological grace, wrong category), दया (mere compassion, too narrow), कृपा (non-grace kindness, too narrow)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: Covenant and Loyalty

חֶסֶד (chesed), combining loyalty, love, mercy, and covenant faithfulness; no single Hindi word captures the full breadth. Jonathan’s appeal for ‘the chesed of the LORD’ (20:14-15). NEW COINAGE. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence explaining chesed’s untranslatable breadth and its distinctness from the three adjacent baseline terms.

National Deliverance

Approved rendering: रक्षा / बचाना
Transliteration: rakṣā / bacānā
Doctrine: National Deliverance versus Spiritual Salvation
Rejected alternatives: उद्धार (reserved exclusively for NT spiritual salvation)
Original: יָשַׁע / תְּשׂוּעָה
Category: Warfare and Deliverance

יָשַׁע / תְּשׂוּעָה (yasha/teshu’ah), rescue from military/national danger (Saul at Jabesh-Gilead 11:13; David from Goliath 17:37,47). Establishes the book-wide convention: national/military deliverance is NEVER उद्धार, preserving the baseline’s doctrinal precision against conflating this-worldly rescue with spiritual reconciliation with God.

Inquire Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा से पूछना
Transliteration: Yahowā se pūchanā
Doctrine: Legitimate versus Illegitimate Inquiry of God
Original: שָׁאַל בַּיהוה / דָּרַשׁ
Category: Priestly Instruments

שָׁאַל בַּיהוה / דָּרַשׁ, seeking divine guidance through legitimate means (23:2,4; 30:8), deliberately contrasted with Saul’s illegitimate necromantic inquiry (ch. 28). This ch.23/28/30 juxtaposition (legitimate vs. illegitimate) is a deliberate structural contrast requiring preservation; India’s plural religious landscape often treats astrology, mediums, and temple prayer as pragmatically interchangeable, so the text’s moral distinction must not be flattened.

Medium Risk Terms

Mercy

Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Character of God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Kept distinct from अनुग्रह (grace) and स्थिर प्रेम (chesed, covenant loyalty).

Approved rendering: शांति
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: चैन, सुकून

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used as Samuel’s greeting formula at Bethlehem (16:5, שָׁלוֹם) reassuring the elders of no hostile prophetic intent.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का राज्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā rājya
Doctrine: The Transition from Judges to Monarchy
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का राष्ट्र

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used in doctrinal commentary to distinguish God’s own eternal, unconditional reign from the revocable human राज्य/राजत्व (kingdom_kingship entry) of Saul’s or David’s dynasty.

David

Approved rendering: दाऊद
Transliteration: Dāūda
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Original: דָּוִד
Category: Proper Names

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Same BSI OV proper name form; risk elevated to Medium in 1 Samuel given David’s centrality to the curriculum’s core doctrine.

Israel

Approved rendering: इस्राएल
Transliteration: Isrāela
Doctrine: The Transition from Judges to Monarchy

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged.

Circumcision

Approved rendering: खतना
Transliteration: khatanā
Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Base for the compound uncircumcised_taunt entry (खतनारहित) used of the Philistines’ ethnic-religious taunt (17:26,36; 31:4).

Blessing Of Abraham

Approved rendering: आशीष
Transliteration: āśīṣa
Doctrine: Vengeance Belongs to the LORD
Rejected alternatives: आशीर्वाद (guru/elder reciprocal-favor connotation)

Inherited from Romans/Galatians package, unchanged. Reused as the base rendering pattern for Abigail’s spoken blessing at 25:33 — see blessing_berakhah entry — deliberately avoiding आशीर्वाद’s reciprocal-favor connotation.

Deacon

Approved rendering: सेविका
Transliteration: sevikā
Doctrine: Church as God’s People

Inherited from Romans package. The masculine form सेवक (noted in the baseline entry) is the pattern used for David’s self-designation as YHWH’s servant — see servant_of_the_lord entry.

Hand Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का हाथ
Transliteration: Yahowā kā hātha
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Gods (Dagon)
Original: יַד־יהוה
Category: God

Idiom for God’s active, often judicial, intervention (chs. 4-6). Render naturally; do not over-literalize into a bodily image of God.

Judge Office

Approved rendering: न्यायी / न्यायाधीश
Transliteration: nyāyī / nyāyādhīśa
Doctrine: Samuel’s Role as Prophet and Judge
Original: שֹׁפֵט
Category: Prophetic Office

שֹׁפֵט (shophet), the civil-military-spiritual office of the pre-monarchic period; Samuel is explicitly named the last of the shophetim (7:15-17). Distinguish from the baseline’s forensic ‘condemnation’ (दण्ड की आज्ञा), an unrelated courtroom-verdict term. Gloss on first use (ch. 7) as a leader combining military and spiritual leadership.

Call Formula Hineni

Approved rendering: मैं यहाँ हूँ
Transliteration: maiṃ yahāṃ hūṃ
Doctrine: The Prophetic Call and the Word of the LORD
Original: הִנֵּנִי
Category: Prophetic Office

הִנֵּנִי (hineni), spoken three times by young Samuel (3:4-10). Keep simple and direct; do not expand into an elaborate devotional formula not present in the spare Hebrew original.

Man Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का जन
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā jana
Doctrine: Divine Judgment on Corrupt Religious Leadership
Rejected alternatives: परमेश्वर का भक्त
Original: אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים
Category: Prophetic Office

אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים (ish ha-Elohim), 2:27; 9:6-10. NEVER परमेश्वर का भक्त — भक्त imports a Hindu devotional-worshipper connotation inappropriate for a commissioned prophetic messenger bearing an authoritative message.

Manner Of The King

Approved rendering: राजा की रीति
Transliteration: rājā kī rīti
Doctrine: The Transition from Judges to Monarchy
Original: מִשְׁפַּט הַמֶּלֶךְ
Category: Kingship

מִשְׁפַּט הַמֶּלֶךְ (mishpat ha-melek), Samuel’s catalogue of royal abuses (8:11-18). Must be framed as covenant-theological warning, not neutral political/civics commentary.

Guilt Offering

Approved rendering: दोष बलि
Transliteration: doṣa bali
Doctrine: Obedience versus Sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22)
Original: אָשָׁם
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

אָשָׁם (asham), a specific Levitical sacrifice for guilt-reparation, parodied syncretistically by the Philistines’ golden tumors/mice (6:3-8). Distinguish from the baseline’s NT propitiation (प्रायश्चित्त); this names a literal OT ritual category.

Consecrate Qiddesh

Transliteration: pavitra karanā
Doctrine: Holiness and Reverence for God’s Presence
Original: קִדֵּשׁ
Category: Sacrifice and Ritual

Doctrine: Covenant Loyalty and Friendship (Chesed)
Original: אָהַב
Category: Covenant and Loyalty

אָהַב (ahav), covenantal, loyal love/friendship between Jonathan and David (18:1,3; 20:17), not romantic love.

Blessing Berakhah

Approved rendering: आशीष
Transliteration: āśīṣa
Doctrine: Vengeance Belongs to the LORD
Rejected alternatives: आशीर्वाद (guru/elder reciprocal-favor connotation)
Original: בְּרָכָה
Category: Covenant and Loyalty

בְּרָכָה (berakhah), Abigail’s spoken pronouncement of favor (25:33). Aligned with the baseline blessing_of_abraham आशीष rather than आशीर्वाद.

Doctrine: Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)
Original: חָרַף
Category: Warfare and Deliverance

Transliteration: śapatha
Doctrine: National Deliverance versus Spiritual Salvation
Original: אָלָה
Category: Warfare and Deliverance

אָלָה (alah), Saul’s rash, self-binding oath (ch. 14). Distinct from the baseline Galatians curse (श्राप, a judicial curse-sentence pronounced on another) — this is a self-binding vow.

Doctrine: The Danger of Rejecting God as King
Original: דָּמִים
Category: Occult and Judgment

Vengeance Naqam

Approved rendering: बदला
Transliteration: badalā
Doctrine: Vengeance Belongs to the LORD
Original: נְקָמָה / נָקָם
Category: Occult and Judgment

נְקָמָה / נָקָם (neqamah/naqam), human, self-executed retaliation David is persuaded to renounce (25:26,31,33; cf. 24:12; 26:10). Usage here is doctrinally CORRECT (the text itself condemns this human vengeance); distinct from the baseline’s separate caution against बदला specifically describing God’s own righteous wrath (a different referent — see wrath_of_god).

Ephod

Approved rendering: एपोद
Transliteration: epoda
Doctrine: Legitimate versus Illegitimate Inquiry of God
Original: אֵפוֹד
Category: Priestly Instruments

אֵפוֹד (ephod), the priestly garment/instrument for inquiring of the LORD (23:6,9; 30:7). Transliterated; no natural Hindi descriptive equivalent exists without an awkward multi-word gloss.

Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Original: מַרְאֶה / קוֹמָה / אַדְמוֹנִי / יְפֵה עֵינַיִם

Teaching note advisable: appearance was not the BASIS of God’s choice, not that appearance is irrelevant to narrative description.

Servant Of The Lord

Transliteration: sevaka
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Choice of David
Original: עֶבֶד (יהוה)
Category: Messianic Typology
