Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — Obadiah (Hindi)

Purpose

This document executes Phase 1 Step 4 (Doctrine Analysis) for the book of Obadiah, destination language Hindi. It provides (a) verse-by-verse/pericope-by-pericope full-book coverage confirming that every part of Obadiah 1:1–21 has been reviewed for doctrinal and translation risk, and (b) a doctrine matrix that is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same 13 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. The four curriculum-anchor doctrines (Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People; The Day of the Lord for All Nations; God’s Justice for the Oppressed; The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord) are supplemented by nine supporting doctrines surfaced across the book’s 21 verses, ensuring no chapter or section is silently skipped. Obadiah is a single-chapter book; “full-book coverage” is therefore executed at the pericope level below, tracing vv.1–21 from first to last.

Coverage confirmation: All 21 verses of Obadiah are accounted for across the eight pericopes above. No verse range contributes zero doctrinal or terminological content; even the lowest-risk pericope (vv.8–9) is explicitly retained here as “reviewed — Low risk, automated review sufficient” rather than omitted.

Part B: Doctrine Matrix

The following matrix reproduces, without alteration, the 13 doctrines, risk tiers, and review routing established in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, adding the specific translation risk rationale required by Phase 1 Step 4.

#DoctrineSupporting Passages (Obadiah)Risk LevelTranslation RiskReview Routing
1Judgment on Pride1:2–4, 1:3Criticalमन का घमण्ड must carry defiance-of-God force, not mere social vanity; नेशर (eagle) must render उकाब, never गरुड़ (Vishnu’s mythological vehicle), or the judgment image gains an unintended quasi-divine elevation.Human theologian
2Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)1:10–14Criticalभाई must stay strictly literal kinship (Jacob/Esau); drift toward generic “neighboring people” erases the fratricide-specific gravity of the charge and its Genesis 25/Cain-Abel resonance.Human theologian
3The Day of the LORD for All Nations1:15–16Criticalयहोवा का दिन must never become प्रभु का दिन — severing the covenant-name anchor; राष्ट्र must stay unqualified and universal, not narrowed to Edom’s neighbors.Human theologian
4God’s Justice for the Oppressed1:17, 1:19–20Highबचे हुए लोग / कोई भी शेष न रहेगा must remain a visible antonym pair; अधिकार में लेना must stay distinct from Galatians-baseline spiritual-inheritance vocabulary (वारिस, प्रतिज्ञा).Human theologian
5The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord1:21Criticalराज्य यहोवा का होगा must retain यहोवा (never परमेश्वर/प्रभु alone); requires an explicit theologian note bridging to the baseline परमेश्वर का राज्य entry without conflating OT/NT surface forms.Human theologian
6Human Deliverers and the Uniqueness of Christ’s Salvation1:21Criticalउद्धारकर्ता (plural human deliverers) built on the Critical उद्धार root risks implying competing saviors beside Christ absent a mandatory clarifying note on every occurrence.Human theologian

8Inspiration of Prophetic Revelation1:1Highदर्शन is the established BSI superscription term, yet the Galatians baseline forbids दर्शन for ἀποκάλυψις due to Hindu devotional-sight connotations; a mandatory note must distinguish received revelation from self-attained mystical sight.Human theologian

Part C: Cross-Doctrine Dependency Notes

  1. यहोवा (Doctrine 7) underlies Doctrines 1, 3, 5, 6. Every Critical doctrine in this book ultimately depends on consistent, non-substitutable use of the covenant name. A single mistranslation of यहोवा as प्रभु or परमेश्वर in any one of its six occurrences (1:1,4,8,15,18,21) has ripple effects across the pride-judgment, day-of-the-LORD, and kingdom-belonging doctrines simultaneously. Theologian review of यहोवा occurrences should therefore be treated as a single review pass covering all dependent doctrines, not six isolated checks.
  2. Doctrines 4 and 6 share the उद्धार root and must be reviewed together: बचे हुए लोग (remnant) in v.17 sets up the expectation resolved by उद्धारकर्ता (deliverers) in v.21. A theologian reviewing v.21 in isolation, without the v.17 remnant-contrast in view, may miss that the “saviors” are the means by which the remnant’s deliverance is executed, not a second, independent doctrine.
  3. Doctrine 2 (violence against God’s people) and Doctrine 11 (schadenfreude) are the same narrative unit (1:10–14) split by risk tier only because भाई carries Critical stakes while आनन्दित हुआ carries Medium stakes; reviewers should read vv.10–14 as one continuous indictment, not four unrelated verses.
  4. Doctrine 8 (दर्शन) is unique in this registry as a term the wider Language Package elsewhere forbids (for ἀποκάλυψις in Galatians). Its retention here for the superscription genre-label must be adjudicated once, in writing, by the reviewing theologian, and that adjudication note should be attached to the Phase 2 translation memory entry so it is not re-litigated per occurrence.
  5. Doctrine 9 (recompense) and Doctrine 3 (Day of the LORD) occur in the same verse (1:15) and should be reviewed as a single segment; separating them risks translating “the Day of the LORD is near” and “as you have done, it shall be done to you” with inconsistent registers of divine justice (impersonal cosmic timing vs. personal judicial recompense) when both must read as the acts of one personal sovereign God.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Judgment on Pride

Hindi name: घमण्ड पर परमेश्वर का न्याय
Key terms: pride_of_heart, eagle
Review routing: Human theologian

Edom’s pride is self-security against God himself (‘who shall bring me down to the ground?’), not ordinary vanity. मन का घमण्ड extends the baseline घमण्ड root (Romans 3:27) into a defiance-of-God register that must not be flattened into mere social arrogance. Compounding the risk, the eagle image (नेशर) must render as उकाब, never गरुड़ — गरुड़ is Vishnu’s mythological eagle-vehicle in Hindu tradition, and using it here would attach an unwanted quasi-divine, elevated-status association to the very image meant to depict pride about to be humbled by YHWH.

Violence against God’s People (Fratricidal Betrayal)

Hindi name: परमेश्वर की प्रजा के विरुद्ध हिंसा (भाईचारे का विश्वासघात)
Key terms: violence, brother, gloated_rejoiced, cut_off_forever
Review routing: Human theologian

The moral weight of the entire oracle depends on भाई (brother) being kept strictly literal — Edom’s crime is not aggression against a foreign enemy but violence, gloating, and active betrayal against a literal kin-nation (Jacob/Esau, Genesis 25). If भाई drifts toward a generalized ‘neighboring people,’ the fratricide-specific gravity of the charge (and its parallel to Cain-and-Abel-type violence, Genesis 6:11,13) is lost, and हिंसा risks being read as ordinary geopolitical conflict rather than covenant-kin betrayal.

The Day of the LORD for All Nations

Hindi name: सब राष्ट्रों के लिए यहोवा का दिन
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, yhwh_covenant_name, nations_goyim, recompense, drink_cup_of_judgment, totality_idiom
Review routing: Human theologian

This is the book’s theological pivot: Edom’s specific judgment is universalized to all nations under a fixed technical phrase, यहोवा का दिन, which must never be rendered प्रभु का दिन. Substituting प्रभु would sever the phrase’s covenant-name anchor and its established continuity with the Hindi OT prophetic tradition (Amos, Joel). राष्ट्र must remain unqualified and universal in scope; softening ‘all nations’ to a limited set of surrounding peoples would erase the very universalizing move the passage makes.

The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord

Hindi name: राज्य का यहोवा के अधीन होना
Key terms: kingdom_belongs_to_the_lord, saviors_deliverers, yhwh_covenant_name
Review routing: Human theologian

The book’s climactic clause, राज्य यहोवा का होगा, must retain यहोवा (never परमेश्वर alone or प्रभु alone) to preserve its OT covenant-name force while a mandatory theologian note connects it to the baseline kingdom_of_god entry (परमेश्वर का राज्य) as the same ultimate sovereignty in a later canonical stage. Compounding the risk, the plural human ‘saviors’ (उद्धारकर्ता, môshiʿîm) who act as Zion’s agents must never be allowed, absent a clarifying note, to appear as competing saviors alongside Christ’s unique, singular उद्धार — a serious risk given the baseline’s Critical-tier prohibition on diluting उद्धार’s exclusivity.

Human Deliverers and the Uniqueness of Christ’s Salvation

Hindi name: मानवीय उद्धारकर्ता और मसीह के उद्धार की अद्वितीयता
Key terms: saviors_deliverers
Review routing: Human theologian

उद्धारकर्ता is built directly on the same उद्धार root as the baseline Critical salvation entry (never मुक्ति/मोक्ष). Because Obadiah 1:21 names these deliverers in the plural as human agents (Judges-type figures), every occurrence requires a mandatory translator note clarifying that these are historical, human, Zion-based agents of deliverance distinct from — and anticipatory of, not competing with — Christ’s unique and final उद्धार in the New Testament. Without this note, Hindi readers accustomed to multiple avatars/deliverers in devotional traditions could read this verse as endorsing plural saviorhood.

The Covenant Name and Sovereignty of YHWH

Hindi name: यहोवा का वाचा-नाम और उसकी सम्प्रभुता
Key terms: yhwh_covenant_name, adonai_yhwh_title
Review routing: Human theologian

Obadiah’s entire prophetic authority rests on being YHWH’s own speech-act (‘for the LORD has spoken,’ v. 18). यहोवा must be used consistently across all six occurrences (explicit and formulaic) and must never be interchanged with प्रभु (reserved for the baseline’s NT κύριος confession) or परमेश्वर (the baseline’s generic God term) without an explicit cross-reference note establishing OT/NT theological continuity. Inconsistent transliteration across the book would fracture the reader’s sense that one and the same sovereign God speaks, judges, and restores from v. 1 to v. 21.

High Risk Doctrines

God’s Justice for the Oppressed

Hindi name: पीड़ितों के लिए परमेश्वर का न्याय
Key terms: remnant_deliverance, no_survivor, holy_mountain, possess_inheritance, exile_captivity
Review routing: Human theologian

God’s vindication of the oppressed (Jacob’s fleeing refugees, hunted by Edom in vv. 12-14) is expressed through the deliberate antonym pair बचे हुए लोग (remnant, reused exactly from the baseline Romans 9:27/11:5 entry) versus कोई भी शेष न रहेगा (no survivor, applied to Edom). If this contrast is flattened or the terms are used interchangeably, the passage’s central justice-claim — total preservation for the wronged, total judgment for the unrepentant oppressor — collapses. अधिकार में लेना (territorial possession) must also stay distinct from the Galatians baseline’s spiritual-inheritance vocabulary (वारिस, प्रतिज्ञा) to avoid conflating literal land-restoration with NT spiritual inheritance.

Inspiration of Prophetic Revelation

Hindi name: भविष्यवाणी की प्रेरणा
Key terms: prophetic_vision, obadiah_prophet_name
Review routing: Human theologian

The established Hindi Bible convention renders the prophetic-book-superscription term חָזוֹן as दर्शन (cf. यशायाह का दर्शन), yet the Galatians baseline explicitly forbade दर्शन for ἀποκάλυψις/revelation because दर्शन carries the Hindu devotional connotation of a devotee’s self-attained visionary sight of a deity. Retaining दर्शन here for the fixed superscription genre-label requires a mandatory translator note clarifying that Obadiah received this vision from a personal, initiating, sovereign God rather than attaining it through his own devotional practice — otherwise this book’s opening word could be misread as endorsing a mystical-attainment model of revelation the wider Language Package elsewhere rejects.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Divine Recompense (Lex Talionis Justice)

Hindi name: परमेश्वर का प्रतिफलात्मक न्याय
Key terms: recompense, day_of_the_lord
Review routing: Native speaker review

गेमुल्खा must be rendered so as to preserve proportionate, personal, divine justice (‘as you have done, it shall be done to you’), not capricious बदला-style personal revenge. This is a lower-stakes lexical concern than the Critical terms above, since the surrounding यहोवा का दिन phrase already anchors the judgment as God’s own act; native speaker review can confirm the tone of बदला in context remains judicial rather than vindictive.

Exile and Covenant Restoration

Hindi name: बँधुआई और वाचा की बहाली
Key terms: exile_captivity, possess_inheritance, israel_children
Review routing: Native speaker review

बँधुआई is a standard, low-ambiguity Hindi Old Testament term, but the doctrinal nuance — that the very people once exiled under covenant curse become the agents of covenant-promised restoration — is a grace-driven reversal that a native speaker reviewer should confirm reads clearly, rather than as a merely political reversal of fortune.

Schadenfreude and Moral Accountability

Hindi name: दूसरे की विपत्ति पर आनन्द मनाने का उत्तरदायित्व
Key terms: gloated_rejoiced, day_of_calamity
Review routing: Native speaker review

आनन्दित हुआ/हँसा must retain its culpable, gloating sense in this context, distinct from आनन्द’s ordinarily positive use elsewhere in this Language Package (e.g., baseline thanksgiving/joy contexts). A native speaker reviewer should verify the surrounding clause makes the culpability unmistakable rather than reading as neutral emotional description.

Betrayal by Covenant Allies

Hindi name: वाचा-मित्रों का विश्वासघात
Key terms: covenant_alliance, thieves_and_raiders
Review routing: Native speaker review

बेरीत here is used in its ordinary political-alliance sense rather than the Abrahamic/Davidic theological covenant sense carried by the baseline वाचा entry. A native speaker should confirm the disambiguating context (Edom’s own treaty allies, not God’s covenant with Israel) is clear so readers do not read a theological covenant into a purely political betrayal.

Low Risk Doctrines

The Stripping of Human Wisdom and Might

Hindi name: मानवीय बुद्धि और शक्ति का हटाया जाना
Key terms: wise_men, mighty_men
Review routing: Automated review

God strips Edom of the two resources nations typically trust for security — proverbial wisdom and military strength. बुद्धिमान लोग and वीर/शूरवीर are standard Hindi vocabulary with no competing religious connotation; automated review is sufficient to confirm accurate, natural rendering.
