Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 John
English → Manipuri | Phase 1, Step 4
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for 1 John, chapters 1–5, extending the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json without contradiction and remaining fully consistent with the 1 John doctrine_risk_registry.json (28 doctrines: 12 Critical, 12 High, 3 Medium, 1 Low). The core passage, 1 John 4:7-21 (God is Love / Love for the Brethren), is the theological anchor of this curriculum but not its scope boundary: every chapter of 1 John is analyzed below, first to last, including sections that carry forward doctrine already established elsewhere in the book or introduce no new Critical/High term. Risk tiers, Manipuri doctrine names, and review routing below are copied verbatim from doctrine_risk_registry.json and must not be altered in Phase 2.
Methodology
Each chapter of 1 John is walked verse-section by verse-section. For each section:
- Active doctrine(s) are identified against the registry’s 28 entries.
- Sections that introduce no new doctrine or Critical/High term are explicitly marked [REVIEWED — no new doctrinal load] rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
- Translation risk reasoning is grounded specifically in the live dual religious landscape of Manipur (Sanamahism/Umang Lai/maibi-maiba practice and Gaudiya Vaishnavism/Ras Lila/murti veneration), consistent with the baseline Romans package and the 1 John registry.
Chapter 1: Fellowship, Light, and Confession
1:1-4 — Prologue: Eyewitness Testimony
- Doctrine:
eyewitness_testimony_apostolic_witness(High) - The tactile “heard, seen, looked upon, touched” language is 1 John’s strongest anti-docetic argument, establishing the Word of Life’s concrete historicity before any doctrinal exposition begins.
- Translation risk: Given the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei sacred manuscripts, apostolic testimony’s textual/historical concreteness carries added cultural weight for a Meitei audience with its own memory of contested/lost sacred writings; must be taught as historically anchored, not merely devotionally authoritative.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
1:5-7 — God is Light; Walking in the Light
- Doctrines:
god_is_light(Critical);walking_in_the_light(High);fellowship_with_god_and_one_another(High) - Translation risk: God’s holy nature as “light” must be kept distinct from the ceremonial visual splendor of Ras Lila staging, designed to evoke Krishna’s own divine radiance for worshippers. “Walking in light” must be taught as ongoing relational/moral integrity, not ritual-purity maintenance comparable to preparatory washing before Lai Haraoba or temple worship.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
1:8-10 — Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
- Doctrine:
confession_and_forgiveness_of_sin(High) - Translation risk: Confession (ফোংনা হায়বা) must be genuine, specific acknowledgment of sin to a personal God, not a generalized ritual-purification declaration paralleling Lai Haraoba purification rites.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
Chapter 2: Advocate, Commandment, Antichrist
2:1-2 — Christ our Advocate; Propitiation
- Doctrines:
advocate_intercession_of_christ(Critical);propitiation(Critical);universal_scope_of_propitiation(High) - Translation risk: Christ’s advocacy must not be confused with the recognized maiba/maibi ritual-intermediary role between community and Umang Lai/ancestral spirits. Propitiation (বলি-compound) must never appear bare, since বলি is the standard word for Vaishnava naivedya temple offerings and Umang Lai appeasement offerings — both human-initiated appeasement of a deity of uncertain favor, the reverse of 1 John’s point that God himself supplies the propitiation. “Whole world” scope must retain unqualified universality.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
2:3-6 — Keeping His Commandments; Walking as Christ Walked
- Doctrines:
walking_in_the_light(High, continued);fellowship_with_god_and_one_another(High, continued) - [REVIEWED — reinforces 1:5-7 doctrine, no new term]
- Review routing: Human theologian (per governing doctrine).
2:7-11 — The Old/New Commandment; Love and Hatred of the Brother
- Doctrine:
love_for_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(Critical);walking_in_the_light(High) - Translation risk: Love/hatred toward “the brother” is measured relationally, not by yumnak clan-lineage loyalty; hatred is equated with remaining in darkness.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
2:12-14 — Address to Little Children, Fathers, Young Men
- [REVIEWED — pastoral address reinforcing assurance and victory-over-the-evil-one themes already covered under
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_lifeanddevil_as_defeated_enemy; no new doctrinal term introduced] - Review routing: Native speaker review (pastoral tone/register only).
2:15-17 — Do Not Love the World
- Doctrine:
overcoming_the_world(High) - Translation risk: κόσμος as moral-system must be distinguished from the created world/nature reverence embedded in Umang Lai sacred-grove practice; the world’s “lust” and “pride” are not ritually neutralized through maibi mediation or Umang Lai propitiation but overcome through abiding relationship with God.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
2:18-23 — Antichrists and the Denial of the Son
- Doctrines:
incarnation_and_antichrist(Critical);sonship_of_christ(Critical);deity_of_christ(Critical, implied in Father/Son denial logic) - Translation risk: Antichrist must not be flattened into a generic evil-spirit/asura figure from the populated Meitei spirit-world; its defining content is specifically the Christological denial that Jesus is the Christ, and that the Son reveals the Father. This is the doctrinal hinge verse for the entire curriculum’s title doctrine.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
2:24-27 — The Anointing Abides
- Doctrine:
anointing_of_holy_spirit(High) - Translation risk: Must not be rendered with অভিষেক (Vaishnava murti-consecration ritual), which would suggest a one-time ceremonial rite performed on believers rather than the Spirit’s own ongoing indwelling teaching ministry.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
2:28-29 — Abiding in Him; Born of Him
- Doctrines:
new_birth(Critical);fellowship_with_god_and_one_another(High, “abide”) - Translation risk: “Born of him” (গেন্নাও root) must never be conflated with পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), the term already forbidden in the baseline package. New birth here is introduced as the interpretive key for all of chapter 3’s ethical tests.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
Chapter 3: Children of God, Love in Deed, Confidence
3:1-3 — Children of God; Hope of Christlikeness
- Doctrine:
children_of_god_adoption(High) - Translation risk: Full inheritance-rights child-status is not a settled category within traditional yumnak (clan) kinship, where inheritance runs through birth lineage; the “not yet appeared what we shall be” hope must not be read through a bhakti aspiration toward eventual nearness to/absorption into Krishna’s presence.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
3:4-10 — Sin as Lawlessness; the Seed of God; Children of the Devil
- Doctrines:
sin_as_lawlessness(Medium);new_birth(Critical, continued);devil_as_defeated_enemy(High) - Translation risk: Sin is defined relationally against God’s revealed will (য়াথাং), not an impersonal cosmic order (ধর্ম). The devil must be taught as a specific, personal, morally responsible, already-defeated enemy — not one troublesome spirit among the populated Meitei spirit-world that could be ritually placated or negotiated with by a maibi/maiba.
- Review routing: Human theologian (Critical/High elements govern); Native speaker review sufficient for the Medium
sin_as_lawlessnesselement alone.
3:11-18 — Love in Deed and Truth; Cain as Warning; Compassion
- Doctrines:
love_for_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(Critical);compassion_and_practical_love(Low) - Translation risk: “Laying down one’s life” for the brethren establishes the self-giving pattern that 4:7-21 will ground in God’s own character; Cain’s fratricide is the negative type-case for hatred of a brother. Compassion/practical love carries minor risk beyond consistent terminology with the God-is-Love doctrine.
- Review routing: Human theologian (Critical governs the section); Automated review sufficient for the Low-tier compassion element specifically.
3:19-24 — Assurance Before God; Confidence and the Spirit Given
- Doctrines:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical, “reassure our heart”);perfected_love_casts_out_fear(High, anticipatory);anointing_of_holy_spirit(High, “by the Spirit he has given us”) - Translation risk: Assurance before a God who “knows all things” must not be reframed as anxious devotional-merit accounting (bhakti standing) or ritual-favor uncertainty toward the Umang Lai.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
Chapter 4: Testing the Spirits, and the Core Passage — God is Love
4:1-6 — Testing the Spirits
- Doctrines:
testing_the_spirits(Critical);spirit_of_truth_and_error(High) - Translation risk: The single most direct engagement point in 1 John with a live, currently practiced Meitei religious phenomenon. Believers are commanded to test — neither automatically trust nor reflexively dismiss — spirit-claims, giving biblically grounded footing for evaluating maibi trance-possession claims during Lai Haraoba without importing an external polemical framework. The test given is specifically Christological (confessing Jesus Christ come in the flesh), not experiential, moral, or based on the prestige of the claimed source (maibi oracular utterance or independent Vaishnava scriptural-philosophical authority). Bare থাওয়াই (not থাওয়াই অসেংবা) is required here per the contextual-use rule in
08_core_glossary.md. - Review routing: Human theologian (mandatory joint review with native-speaker input per glossary note).
4:7-21 — CORE PASSAGE: God is Love; Love for the Brethren; Perfected Love Casts Out Fear This is the curriculum’s theological anchor and carries the highest concentration of Critical/High doctrine in the book.
- 4:7-8:
god_is_love(Critical) — God’s essential nature; the one who does not love does not know God.- Translation risk: নুংশিবা (agapē) must be explicitly distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s prema — the passionate, romanticized divine love between Krishna and Radha enacted in the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila. God’s love is self-giving essence prior to and independent of any devotee’s responsive love, not a bhakti-elicited favor absorbed into the devotional economy.
- 4:9-10:
sonship_of_christ(Critical);propitiation(Critical);divine_initiative_in_love(High)- Translation risk: μονογενής (“only Son,” 4:9) directly confronts avatar theology’s sequence of Vishnu’s descents culminating (in some Vaishnava schemes) with Krishna — there is no other, no second, no repeatable descent. “Not that we loved God, but that he loved us” (4:10) parallels the baseline Grace doctrine’s rejection of bhakti-responsive কৃপা: love is never self-generated toward God first.
- 4:11-13:
love_for_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(Critical);fellowship_with_god_and_one_another(High, “abide in us”)- Translation risk: Mutual indwelling (menō/লৈরকপা) collides with both Sanamahi household-deity residency concepts and maibi trance-possession phenomenology; must be taught as relational, permanent divine indwelling grounded in the Spirit, not episodic ritual possession.
- 4:14-16:
sonship_of_christ(Critical);god_is_love(Critical, “God is love” restated);fellowship_with_god_and_one_another(High)- Translation risk: The confession that “the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world” must retain a personal, historical, once-for-all sending, not a recurring divine-descent pattern.
- 4:17-18:
perfected_love_casts_out_fear(High)- Translation risk: Confidence/boldness on the day of judgment rests on being “as he is” — Christ’s finished standing — not ritual boldness earned by placating the Umang Lai or accumulated bhakti-devotional merit. Must also not contradict “fear of the LORD” wisdom-tradition language elsewhere in Scripture; this is specifically dread of condemnation, not reverent awe.
- 4:19-21:
divine_initiative_in_love(High);love_for_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(Critical, “if anyone says ‘I love God’ and hates his brother”)- Translation risk: Love for the unseen God is tested by love for the seen brother; this must be taught as the diagnostic test of new birth, not an independent second commandment alongside it.
- Review routing: Human theologian (mandatory for the entire core passage; this section requires the highest reviewer priority in Phase 2 Step 17).
Chapter 5: Faith’s Victory, Threefold Witness, Assurance, Idols
5:1-5 — Born of God; Overcoming the World Through Faith
- Doctrines:
new_birth(Critical);children_of_god_adoption(High);overcoming_the_world(High);love_for_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(Critical, “loves the parent loves the child”) - Translation risk: Victory over the world is located specifically in faith that Jesus is the Son of God, not ritual protective power sought via maibi mediation or Umang Lai propitiation against misfortune, nor devotional attainment within bhakti practice.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
5:6-12 — The Threefold Witness; God’s Testimony Concerning His Son
- Doctrines:
threefold_witness_and_testimony(Medium);sonship_of_christ(Critical);assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical, “he who has the Son has life”) - Translation risk: The water/blood/Spirit testimony refers to a historical, once-for-all event (Christ’s baptism and death) and its meaning, not ongoing revelatory utterance comparable to maibi trance testimony or guru/scriptural-lineage authority claims within Vaishnava tradition.
- Review routing: Human theologian (Critical elements govern the section); Native speaker review sufficient for the Medium threefold-witness element in isolation.
5:13-15 — Written So You May Know; Confidence in Prayer
- Doctrines:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical, the book’s stated purpose verse);confidence_in_prayer(Medium) - Translation risk: “That you may know you have eternal life” directly answers standing-anxiety otherwise attached to devotional-merit frameworks. Confidence in prayer according to God’s revealed will must be distinguished from petitions traditionally carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi/maiba, and from ritual-guaranteed-outcome expectations within bhakti devotional practice.
- Review routing: Human theologian (Critical governs); Native speaker review sufficient for the Medium prayer-confidence element alone.
5:16-17 — Sin Unto Death / Sin Not Unto Death
- [REVIEWED — extends
confession_and_forgiveness_of_sin(High) doctrine already established at 1:8-10; no new registry entry required, but this passage is exegetically difficult and should carry a translator note flagging pastoral sensitivity around the “sin unto death” distinction, since an imprecise rendering could be misheard as a this-worldly curse/misfortune category resembling Umang Lai taboo-violation consequences] - Review routing: Human theologian (per governing High-risk doctrine; flag for careful translator note).
5:18-20 — Confident Summary: Kept, Not of the World, Knowing the True God
- Doctrines:
new_birth(Critical);devil_as_defeated_enemy(High, “the evil one does not touch him”);deity_of_christ(Critical);sonship_of_christ(Critical);assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical, “this is the true God and eternal life”) - Translation risk: This capstone deity statement must not be softened into an exalted-teacher or avatar Christology; it directly reinforces the baseline Romans package’s Critical Deity of Christ doctrine and must be rendered with full theological weight as the book’s closing confessional summary.
- Review routing: Human theologian.
5:21 — “Little Children, Keep Yourselves from Idols”
- Doctrine:
exclusive_worship_rejection_of_idols(Critical) - Translation risk: The single most direct closing collision point for a Meitei audience — murti veneration is central and currently practiced in Manipuri Vaishnava temple worship (including in connection with Ras Lila devotional life), and consecrated representations are present in Sanamahi sacred-grove practice. This closing verse must be framed as a positive call to exclusive worship of তেংবাং মপু, not a blanket cultural denunciation of Meitei religious life. Given its position as the book’s final verse, this passage carries outsized weight for how the entire curriculum is received by a Meitei audience.
- Review routing: Human theologian (mandatory joint theologian/native-speaker review, per glossary note).
Full Doctrine Matrix (All 28 Doctrines, Whole-Book Coverage)
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk (grounded reason) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | God is Light | 1:5-7; 2:8-11 | Critical | Must be distinguished from Ras Lila’s staged ceremonial radiance evoking Krishna’s own divine splendor; this is a defining ontological claim about God’s essence, not incidental imagery. | Human theologian |
| 2 | God is Love | 4:7-8; 4:16 | Critical | নুংশিবা must be distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s prema (Radha-Krishna romantic/devotional love, Ras Lila); God’s love is self-giving essence, not devotee-elicited favor. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Fellowship with God and One Another | 1:3; 1:6-7; 4:12-13 | High | Overlaps bhakti’s aspiration to intimate communion with Krishna and Sanamahi’s ritual communion with the Umang Lai via Lai Haraoba; must be relational/moral, grounded in confessed sin and walking in light. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | 1:9-10; 2:1-2; 5:16-17 | High | Confession must be genuine acknowledgment to God, not a generalized ritual-purification declaration; forgiveness grounded in Christ’s propitiatory blood, not ritual absolution. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Propitiation (Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice) | 2:2; 4:10 | Critical | বলি is the standard word for Vaishnava naivedya offerings and Umang Lai appeasement offerings — human-initiated appeasement of a deity of uncertain favor; 1 John’s point is the reverse: God himself supplies the propitiation. Never render bare বলি. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | 2:9-11; 3:10-18; 4:7-8; 4:20-21 | Critical | Love for fellow believers is evidence, not the means, of new birth; “brethren” crosses yumnak clan-lineage identity, the primary traditional Meitei kinship category. | Human theologian |
| 7 | New Birth (Born of God) | 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1; 5:4; 5:18 | Critical | Must never be conflated with পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), already forbidden in the baseline package as Vaishnava cyclical-rebirth doctrine; new birth is one-time, non-repeatable. | Human theologian |
| 8 | The Incarnation and Antichrist | 4:2-3; 2:18-23 | Critical | Denial of Christ’s permanent, unique incarnation (vs. a repeatable divine descent/avatar) is antichrist’s defining mark; must not flatten into a generic evil-spirit/asura figure. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Deity of Christ | 5:20 | Critical | The book’s capstone deity statement (“the true God and eternal life”) must not soften into an exalted-teacher or avatar Christology. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Sonship of Christ | 4:9; 4:15; 5:5; 5:10-12; 5:20 | Critical | μονογενής (“only Son”) directly confronts avatar theology’s sequence of Vishnu’s descents culminating in Krishna; there is no other, no second. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Advocate/Intercession of Christ | 2:1 | Critical | Must not be confused with the maiba/maibi’s recognized ritual-intermediary role with the Umang Lai or ancestral spirits; advocacy is the risen Son’s own perpetual intercession. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | 1:2; 2:25; 3:14-15; 5:11-13; 5:20 | Critical | Eternal life must never be taught as মোক্ষ or devotional absorption into/nearness to Krishna (Vaikuntha/Goloka); 1 John’s present-possession assurance answers standing-anxiety otherwise attached to devotional-merit frameworks. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Overcoming the World | 2:15-17; 4:4; 5:4-5 | High | Victory is located in faith in Jesus’s Sonship, not ritual protective power via maibi mediation or Umang Lai propitiation, nor bhakti devotional attainment. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Testing the Spirits | 4:1-6 | Critical | The most direct engagement point with a live Meitei religious practice; believers must test (not automatically trust or dismiss) spirit-claims, giving biblical footing for evaluating maibi trance-possession claims. Test is specifically Christological. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Spirit of Truth and Spirit of Error | 4:6 | High | Contrast with claims to alternative spiritual authority (maibi oracular utterance, independent Vaishnava scriptural-philosophical truth-claims); test remains Christological content, not source-prestige. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Children of God / Adoption | 3:1-2; 3:10; 5:1-2 | High | Same collision as baseline Adoption doctrine; full inheritance-rights child-status is not settled within traditional yumnak (clan) kinship, where inheritance runs through birth lineage. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Sin as Lawlessness | 3:4 | Medium | Sin is defined relationally against God’s revealed will (য়াথাং), not an impersonal cosmic order (ধর্ম); reinforces baseline’s rejection of ধর্ম vocabulary. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | The Devil as a Defeated, Personal Enemy | 3:8-10; 4:4; 5:18-19 | High | Must be a specific, personal, morally responsible, already-defeated enemy, not one troublesome spirit among the populated Meitei spirit-world that might be ritually placated. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Divine Initiative in Love (Grace Parallel) | 4:10; 4:19 | High | God’s love/initiative precedes and is not conditioned on human response, paralleling baseline’s Grace doctrine’s rejection of bhakti-responsive কৃপা. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Perfected Love Casts Out Fear | 4:17-18 | High | Assurance rests on being “as he is” (Christ’s finished standing), not ritual boldness earned by placating the Umang Lai or accumulated bhakti-devotional merit; distinct from “fear of the LORD” reverence. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Anointing of the Holy Spirit (Teaching Ministry) | 2:20; 2:27 | High | Must not use অভিষেক (Vaishnava murti-consecration ritual), which would suggest a ceremonial rite performed on believers rather than the Spirit’s own indwelling instructional work. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Threefold Witness and Assurance via Testimony | 5:6-11 | Medium | Testimony to a historical, once-for-all event, not ongoing revelatory utterance comparable to maibi trance testimony or guru/scriptural authority claims. | Native speaker review |
| 23 | Exclusive Worship and Rejection of Idols | 5:21 | Critical | The most direct closing collision point — murti veneration is central and currently practiced in both Manipuri Vaishnava temple worship and Sanamahi sacred-grove practice; frame as invitation to exclusive worship, not blanket denunciation. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Universal Scope of Propitiation | 2:2 | High | Extends propitiation to “the whole world,” relevant to baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine; must retain unqualified universality. | Human theologian |
| 25 | Walking in the Light (Sanctified Conduct) | 1:6-7; 2:9-11 | High | Habitual moral conduct consistent with God’s holy nature; not ritual-purity maintenance (preparatory washing before Lai Haraoba or temple worship). | Human theologian |
| 26 | Eyewitness Testimony and Apostolic Witness | 1:1-4 | High | The tactile eyewitness emphasis is 1 John’s strongest anti-docetic argument; given the 1729 Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning, teach with sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory around lost/contested sacred texts. | Human theologian |
| 27 | Confidence in Prayer / Answered Requests | 5:14-15 | Medium | Confidence according to God’s revealed will; distinguish from petitions carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi/maiba, and from ritual-guaranteed-outcome expectations in bhakti practice. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Compassion and Practical Love | 3:17-18 | Low | Practical, materially active love toward brothers in need; minor risk beyond terminological consistency with the God-is-Love doctrine. | Automated review |

- 1 John 4:1-6 (Testing the Spirits) — most direct live engagement with maibi trance-possession discernment; mandatory joint theologian/native-speaker review.
- 1 John 5:21 (Idols) — closing verse; most direct collision with currently practiced murti veneration in both Vaishnava and Sanamahi contexts; mandatory joint theologian/native-speaker review.
- 1 John 2:18-23 and 2:1-2 — Incarnation/Antichrist and Advocate/Propitiation doctrine, foundational to correctly framing the rest of the book’s Christology.
- 1 John 5:16-17 — pastorally difficult passage requiring a careful translator note despite carrying no new registry entry.
This document extends, and must remain fully consistent with, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (1 John) and the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json. Critical Risk Doctrines
God is Light
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপু মংঙাল ওইবা
Key terms: light, darkness, god
Review routing: Human theologian
This foundational ontological claim about God’s holy moral nature must be kept distinct from the ceremonial visual splendor of Ras Lila staging, explicitly designed to evoke Krishna’s own divine radiance for worshippers — a collision already flagged in baseline’s ‘glory’ entry, applying with even more force here since this is a defining statement of God’s essence, not incidental imagery.
God is Love
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপু নুংশিবা ওইবা
Key terms: love, god, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Agape (নুংশিবা) must be explicitly distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s prema — the passionate, romanticized divine love between Krishna and Radha enacted in the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila. God’s love is self-giving essence prior to and independent of any devotee’s response, not a bhakti-elicited favor collapsed into the devotional economy.
Propitiation (Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice)
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী পাপ কোকহনবগী বলি
Key terms: propitiation, blood_of_christ, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
বলি is the standard word for Vaishnava temple naivedya offerings and for Umang Lai appeasement offerings at Lai Haraoba — both human-initiated appeasement of a deity/spirit of uncertain favor. 1 John’s point is the reverse: God himself initiates and supplies the propitiation. Must always appear in the full compound, never as bare বলি.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Manipuri name: থাজবা ঈচিন-ঈনাওবু নুংশিবা তেংবাং মপুদগী পোকপগী ফাউরিবা
Key terms: brother, love, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Love for fellow believers is evidence, not the means, of new birth. ‘Brethren’ (থাজবা ঈচিন-ঈনাও) crosses yumnak clan-lineage identity, the primary traditional Meitei kinship category; the church as a new, faith-based sibling-family transcending biological/clan kinship must be taught explicitly.
New Birth (Born of God)
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুদগী পোকপা
Key terms: born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Must never be conflated with পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), the term already forbidden in the baseline package for resurrection because it names Vaishnava cyclical-rebirth doctrine. New birth is a one-time, non-repeatable, non-cyclical spiritual event.
The Incarnation and Antichrist
Manipuri name: মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা অমসুং এন্টিক্রিস্তো
Key terms: incarnation, antichrist, confession_of_christ, deny
Review routing: Human theologian
Denial of Christ’s permanent, unique incarnation (as opposed to a repeatable divine descent/avatar) is the defining mark of antichrist. Antichrist must not be flattened into a generic evil-spirit/asura figure — its content is specifically Christological denial.
Deity of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী তেংবাং মপু ওইবা
Key terms: true_god, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
1 John’s capstone deity statement (‘the true God and eternal life’) must not be softened into an exalted-teacher or avatar Christology; it directly reinforces baseline’s Critical Deity of Christ doctrine.
Sonship of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী মচানুপা ওইবা
Key terms: son_of_god, only_begotten_son
Review routing: Human theologian
μονογενής (‘only Son,’ 4:9) directly confronts avatar theology’s sequence of Vishnu’s descents culminating in Krishna within Manipuri Vaishnavism; there is no other, no second.
Advocate/Intercession of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তো ৱার শাংদোকপিবা
Key terms: advocate, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s unique advocacy before the Father must not be confused with the maiba/maibi’s recognized ritual role as intermediary between a community and the Umang Lai or ancestral spirits. Advocacy is the risen Son’s own perpetual intercession grounded in his own righteousness, not a human ritual office.
Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Manipuri name: অহানবা অমসুং লোমদবা হিংবগী থাজবা
Key terms: salvation, eternal_life, confidence_boldness
Review routing: Human theologian
Eternal life must be taught as reconciled, resurrection-order communion with the personal God, never as মোক্ষ (liberation from the rebirth-cycle) nor devotional absorption into or nearness to Krishna in Vaikuntha/Goloka. 1 John’s present-possession assurance (‘that you may know you have eternal life’) answers standing-anxiety otherwise attached to devotional-merit frameworks.
Testing the Spirits
Manipuri name: থাওয়াইশিং চেকশিন য়েংবা
Key terms: test_the_spirits, spirits_tested, false_prophet
Review routing: Human theologian
The single most direct engagement point in 1 John with a live Meitei religious practice: believers are commanded to test, not automatically trust or dismiss, spirit-claims. This gives biblically-grounded footing for evaluating maibi trance-possession claims during Lai Haraoba without importing an external polemical framework. The test given is specifically Christological (confessing Jesus come in the flesh), not experiential or moral.
Exclusive Worship and Rejection of Idols
Manipuri name: মুরুত্তিদগী থোকহনবা অমসুং তেংবাং মপু খক্তবু খুরুম্জবা
Key terms: idols, true_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The single most direct closing collision point for a Meitei audience — murti veneration is central and currently practiced in Manipuri Vaishnava temple worship (including in connection with Ras Lila devotional life), and consecrated representations are present in Sanamahi sacred-grove practice. Must be framed as an invitation to exclusive worship of তেংবাং মপু, not blanket cultural denunciation. Mandatory joint theologian/native-speaker review.
High Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with God and One Another
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগা অমসুং অমাগা অমাগা লোইনবা
Key terms: fellowship, abide, walk_conduct
Review routing: Human theologian
κοινωνία/লোইনবা overlaps both bhakti’s aspiration to intimate communion with Krishna and Sanamahi’s ritual communion with the Umang Lai maintained through Lai Haraoba; must be taught as relational, moral fellowship grounded in confessed sin and walking in the light, not ritual or devotional communion.
Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Manipuri name: পাপ ফোংনা হায়বা অমসুং ময়ামদা কোকপা
Key terms: confession_of_sin, forgiveness, cleanse
Review routing: Human theologian
Confession (ফোংনা হায়বা) must be a genuine, specific acknowledgment of sin to God, not a generalized ritual purification declaration; forgiveness (ময়ামদা কোকপা) is grounded in Christ’s propitiatory blood, not ritual absolution or Lai Haraoba purification rites.
Overcoming the World
Manipuri name: মালেমবু ন্গম্বা
Key terms: world_system, overcome, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Victory is located specifically in faith in Jesus’s Sonship, not ritual protective power sought via maibi mediation or Umang Lai propitiation against misfortune, nor devotional attainment within bhakti practice.
Spirit of Truth and Spirit of Error
Manipuri name: অচুম্বাগী থাওয়াই অমসুং অশোয়বগী থাওয়াই
Key terms: truth, spirits_tested
Review routing: Human theologian
Contrast with claims to alternative spiritual authority (maibi oracular utterance, independent Vaishnava scriptural-philosophical truth-claims); the test remains Christological content, not source-prestige.
Children of God / Adoption
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী মচা ওইবা
Key terms: children_of_god, brother
Review routing: Human theologian
Same collision as baseline’s Adoption doctrine — full inheritance-rights child-status is not a settled category in traditional yumnak (clan) kinship, where inheritance runs through birth lineage; must be taught explicitly, not assumed to transfer automatically from the Romans curriculum.
The Devil as a Defeated, Personal Enemy
Manipuri name: সয়তানবু ন্গমখ্রবা
Key terms: devil, overcome
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be taught as a specific, personal, morally responsible, already-defeated enemy, not one troublesome spirit among the populated Meitei spirit-world (an Umang Lai malevolent nature-spirit or wandering ancestral spirit) that might be ritually placated or negotiated with.
Divine Initiative in Love (Grace Parallel)
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুনা হানবা নুংশিবা
Key terms: love
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s love/initiative precedes and is not conditioned on human response, paralleling baseline’s Grace doctrine’s rejection of bhakti-responsive কৃপা; love is never self-generated toward God first.
Perfected Love Casts Out Fear
Manipuri name: মপুং ফাবা নুংশিবনা কিবা থোকহনবা
Key terms: perfected_love, fear_of_judgment, confidence_boldness
Review routing: Human theologian
Assurance/confidence rests on being ‘as he is’ (Christ’s finished standing), not ritual boldness earned by placating the Umang Lai or accumulated bhakti-devotional merit; must also not contradict ‘fear of the LORD’ wisdom tradition language elsewhere in Scripture — this is specifically dread of condemnation.
Anointing of the Holy Spirit (Teaching Ministry)
Manipuri name: থাওয়াই অসেংবাগী থৌনবগী থৌদাং
Key terms: anointing, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be rendered with অভিষেক, the regional term for ceremonial murti-consecration ritual in Vaishnava temple practice, which would suggest the Spirit’s teaching ministry is a temple-consecration ritual performed on believers rather than the Spirit’s own indwelling instructional work.
Universal Scope of Propitiation
Manipuri name: মালেম পুম্নমক্কীদমক্তা পাপ কোকহনবগী বলি
Key terms: propitiation, world_system
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends propitiation’s scope to ‘the whole world,’ directly relevant to baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine (Critical); must retain unqualified universality without collapsing κόσμος into either the negative world-system sense or a clan/community-bounded scope.
Walking in the Light (Sanctified Conduct)
Manipuri name: মংঙালদা চৎনবা
Key terms: light, walk_conduct, holy
Review routing: Human theologian
Habitual moral conduct consistent with God’s holy nature; must not be understood as ritual purity maintenance (preparatory washing before Lai Haraoba or temple worship) but ongoing relational integrity with God and fellow believers.
Eyewitness Testimony and the Reliability of Apostolic Witness
Manipuri name: উকপা অমসুং তাবা সাক্ষী
Key terms: word_of_life, witness_testimony, manifested
Review routing: Human theologian
The tactile, eyewitness emphasis (‘heard, seen, looked upon, touched’) is 1 John’s strongest anti-docetic argument. Given the historical burning of indigenous Meitei sacred manuscripts (Puya Meithaba, 1729), this apostolic testimony’s concrete historicity should be taught with sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory around lost/contested sacred texts, per baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine note.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Sin as Lawlessness
Manipuri name: পাপ য়াথাং য়াদবা ওইবা
Key terms: lawlessness, sin, law
Review routing: Native speaker review
Sin is defined relationally against God’s revealed will (য়াথাং), not against an impersonal cosmic order (ধর্ম); reinforces baseline’s explicit rejection of ধর্ম vocabulary.
Threefold Witness and Assurance via Testimony
Manipuri name: অহুম মখলগী সাক্ষী
Key terms: witness_testimony, water_witness, blood_of_christ, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
Testimony to a historical, once-for-all event (Christ’s baptism and death) and its meaning, not ongoing revelatory utterance comparable to maibi trance testimony or guru/scriptural authority claims within Vaishnava tradition.
Confidence in Prayer / Answered Requests
Manipuri name: হায়জবগী চিংনবা লৈতবা
Key terms: confidence_boldness, petition
Review routing: Native speaker review
Confidence in prayer according to God’s revealed will; distinguish from petitions traditionally carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi or maiba on a community’s behalf, and from ritual-guaranteed-outcome expectations within bhakti devotional practice.
Low Risk Doctrines
Compassion and Practical Love
Manipuri name: থমোইদা নুংঙাইতবা অমসুং চৎনবগী নুংশিবা
Key terms: compassion, love, lay_down_life
Review routing: Automated review
Practical, materially active love toward brothers in need; standard ethical exhortation building on established love vocabulary, minor risk beyond maintaining terminological consistency with the God is Love doctrine.
