Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Luke 1–24
Methodology & Conventions
This analysis extends 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md to trace every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every parallel to the Romans baseline curriculum found across all 24 chapters of Luke.
- Citation format: normalized as
Book Chapter:Verse(e.g.Isaiah 61:1,Luke 4:18,Romans 4:25). No abbreviations, no Bengali numerals (per the baseline’s cross-reference preservation rule in12_ai_translation_requirements.md). - Connection type tags used in the “OT/NT Connection” column: [Direct Quotation] (verbally cited), [Allusion] (clear echo without verbatim citation), [Typology] (a person/event/institution prefiguring Christ or his work), [Messianic] (a claim or acclamation of messianic identity).
- Every entry that touches a term or doctrine already governed by the Romans baseline is marked [TM-REUSE] and must use the baseline’s exact recorded Manipuri rendering. Every entry that touches a Luke-curriculum term from
08_core_glossary.mdSection B is marked [NEW]. - No chapter is silently omitted. Where a chapter contains no independent OT quotation/allusion beyond material already covered by an earlier chapter, this is stated explicitly.
- This document does not alter any baseline rendering; it identifies where Luke and Romans share an underlying Old Testament source and therefore require identical or explicitly cross-referenced Manipuri renderings (Part 4).
Part 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix
Luke 1 — Infancy Announcements
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 1:17 | John the Baptist as Elijah-forerunner | John the Baptist, Elijah | Malachi 4:5-6 [Typology] | “Spirit and power of Elijah” is prophetic-empowerment continuity, not soul-transfer. Must not be phrased in any way suggesting পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation, forbidden per baseline resurrection entry); John is a distinct person empowered like Elijah, not Elijah’s reincarnation. |
“Reign forever” must be taught as unique, eternal, and unrepeatable — not paralleled to the historic Meitei royal claim of perpetual descent from Pakhangba. |
| Luke 1:35 | Holy Spirit’s overshadowing, incarnating work | Mary, Holy Spirit | Genesis 1:2; Exodus 40:34-35 [Typology] | TM-REUSE থাওয়াই অসেংবা (full form mandatory). Overshadowing signals divine creative presence, not a possession-trance state as experienced by a maibi during Lai Haraoba. |
| Luke 1:46-55 (Magnificat) | Reversal of rich and poor; covenant faithfulness to Abraham | Mary, Hannah, Abraham | 1 Samuel 2:1-10; Genesis 17:7; Micah 7:20 [Direct Allusion] | Foundational text for “Good News to the Poor and Marginalized.” Full economic reversal force (“rich sent away empty,” “lifted up the lowly”) must be preserved, not spiritualized away. |
| Luke 1:68-79 (Benedictus) | Messianic redemption; covenant with Abraham; light in darkness | Zechariah, David, Abraham | Psalm 41:13; Micah 7:20; Malachi 4:2; Isaiah 9:2; Isaiah 60:1-3 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | “Horn of salvation” idiom — TM-REUSE পাংথোক-থেংনবগী অহানবা; explicitly avoids forbidden শক্তি. “Sunrise/dawn from on high” light-imagery must not be conflated with solar or Umang Lai nature-deity symbolism. |
| Luke 1:73 | Oath sworn to Abraham | Abraham | Genesis 22:16-18 [Allusion] | Feeds directly into Romans 4’s Abraham-faith argument; Abraham vocabulary must be kept consistent across both curricula (see Part 4). |
Luke 2 — Birth, Shepherds, Presentation, Boy Jesus in the Temple
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 2:1-7 | Bethlehem birthplace fulfillment (implicit) | Joseph, Mary | Micah 5:2 [Implicit Fulfillment] | Not directly quoted by Luke but universally recognized; supply a catechetical cross-reference note for readers with low Old Testament literacy. |
| Luke 2:14 | Peace and glory announced at Messiah’s advent | angels | Isaiah 9:6-7 [Allusion / Messianic] | TM-REUSE ইনগবা, মতিক চাউবা. Avoid framing as one more festive divine-appearance announcement paralleling the Vaishnava festival calendar (Ras Lila, Krishna Janmashtami), per baseline’s gospel caution. |
| Luke 2:22-24 | Purification and redemption of the firstborn under Torah | Mary, Joseph, Jesus | Leviticus 12:6-8; Exodus 13:2, 12 [Direct Ritual Allusion] | TM-REUSE য়াথাং (law). Jesus’ submission to Torah underlines his real humanity (Incarnation) without becoming a repeatable ritual-consecration pattern; keep distinct from the abhisheka-consecration caution already flagged at Luke 4:18. |
| Luke 2:25-32 (Nunc Dimittis) | Light to the Gentiles; glory to Israel — universal salvation scope | Simeon | Isaiah 42:6; Isaiah 49:6 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | Core text for “Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People.” Pairs directly with Romans’ unity_of_jews_and_gentiles and universal_scope_of_gospel doctrines. Retain unqualified universal scope despite Manipur’s contemporary inter-community sensitivities, per the baseline’s existing caution. |
| Luke 2:34-35 | Sign of contradiction; stumbling-stone motif begins | Simeon, Jesus | Isaiah 8:14-15 [Typology] | Anticipates Romans 9:33’s citation of the same Isaiah stumbling-stone material; flagged for the cross-document consistency rule in Part 4. |
Luke 3 — John the Baptist, Baptism of Jesus, Genealogy
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 3:4-6 | Voice crying in the wilderness; all flesh shall see God’s salvation | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3-5 [Direct Quotation] | The universal “all flesh” clause must be rendered unqualified — parallel to Romans’ universality cautions (Romans 3:23; Romans 10:12-13). TM-REUSE অহানবা for “salvation.” |
| Luke 3:8 | ”God can raise up children of Abraham from these stones” | Abraham | Genesis 17:1-8 (Abrahamic descent) [Allusion] | Ties to Romans 4 and Romans 9’s argument that Abrahamic sonship is by faith, not physical descent; must not be read through the lens of Meitei yumnak (clan) descent as though lineage itself were salvifically decisive. |
| Luke 3:22 | ”You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” | Jesus, voice from heaven | Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 42:1 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | Direct parallel to Romans 1:4 (“declared to be the Son of God … by his resurrection”). TM-REUSE তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা — must render identically in both curricula (see Part 4). |
| Luke 3:23-38 | Genealogy to Adam, “son of God” | Adam, David, Abraham | Genesis 5:1-32; 1 Chronicles 1:1-27 [Typology] | Parallels Romans 5:12-21’s Adam/Christ typology; recommend teaching the two texts together as a cross-curriculum theological unit. |
Luke 4 — Temptation; Nazareth Synagogue (Core Passage); Capernaum Ministry
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 4:4 | ”Man shall not live by bread alone” | Jesus, Satan | Deuteronomy 8:3 [Direct Quotation] | Establishes Scripture itself as the weapon against temptation; ties to Inspiration of Scripture doctrine. |
| Luke 4:8 | ”Worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve” | Jesus, Satan | Deuteronomy 6:13 [Direct Quotation] | Reinforces exclusive worship — directly undercuts any syncretistic reading placing Christ alongside Umang Lai deities or as one more object of Vaishnava bhakti devotion. |
| Luke 4:10-12 | Satan misquotes Psalm 91; Jesus corrects with Deuteronomy 6:16 | Jesus, Satan | Psalm 91:11-12; Deuteronomy 6:16 [Direct Quotation, contested] | Models faithful handling of Scripture against manipulative misquotation — relevant to Inspiration of Scripture doctrine teaching. |
| Luke 4:16-21 | Messianic self-disclosure via Isaiah’s Jubilee/Servant text | Jesus, Isaiah | Isaiah 61:1-2; Isaiah 58:6 [Direct Quotation / Messianic — CORE PASSAGE] | See 07_semantic_analysis.md Part 1 for full verse-by-verse treatment. This is the curriculum’s theological anchor and governs the reading of every other passage in this matrix. |
| Luke 4:25-27 | Elijah/widow of Zarephath; Elisha/Naaman — Gentile-inclusion typology provoking violent rejection | Elijah, Elisha, widow of Zarephath, Naaman | 1 Kings 17:8-16; 2 Kings 5:1-14 [Typology / Messianic] | Critical for “Savior for All Nations” doctrine — Jesus’ very first sermon already anticipates Gentile inclusion and provokes local rejection. Teach as a thematic parallel to Romans 9-11’s Israel/Gentile argument, but do not map onto contemporary Manipur ethnic-community tensions. |
Luke 5 — Calling of Peter; Leper; Paralytic; Levi; New Wine
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 5:12-14 | Leper cleansed; “show yourself to the priest as Moses commanded” | leper, Moses | Leviticus 14:1-32 [Ritual Allusion] | Confirms Torah’s continuing institutional authority even as Jesus inaugurates a greater cleansing; keep distinct from indigenous ritual-purity systems (Sanamahi/Vaishnava). |
| Luke 5:33-35 | Bridegroom imagery in the fasting question | Jesus | Hosea 2:19-20; Isaiah 62:5 [Typology / Messianic] | Messiah as bridegroom of God’s people. Must NOT be rendered with vocabulary evoking the Radha-Krishna romantic-devotional imagery central to Ras Lila; the marital-covenant sense must remain doctrinal (God’s covenant faithfulness), not erotic-devotional. |
Luke 6 — Sermon on the Plain
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 6:3-4 | David eating the showbread | David | 1 Samuel 21:1-6 [Direct Allusion] | Establishes Jesus’ authority to interpret Sabbath law as greater than David’s precedent; ties to Lordship of Christ / “Lord of the Sabbath” (TM-REUSE মপু ইবুংগো). |
| Luke 6:20-26 | Beatitudes and Woes — reversal ethic | — | Isaiah 61:1-3 (echo); Psalm 1:1-6 (contrast form) [Allusion] | Core “Good News to the Poor” text; retain full reversal force per baseline caution against softening in either a prosperity or purely future-only direction. |
| Luke 6:27-36 | Love of enemies; mercy modeled on the Father’s character | — | Leviticus 19:18 (background); Exodus 34:6-7 (divine mercy) [Allusion] | Feeds the newly surfaced Critical “Love of God and Neighbor” doctrine (নুংশিবা) flagged in 08_core_glossary.md Section B; must never be rendered with প্রেম-adjacent vocabulary. |
Luke 7 — Centurion’s Faith; Widow of Nain; John’s Question; Sinful Woman
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 7:22 | Answer to John: blind see, lame walk, poor have good news preached — a direct reprise of the core passage’s own Isaiah material | John the Baptist | Isaiah 35:5-6; Isaiah 61:1 [Direct Allusion / Messianic — reprises core passage] | Must use the SAME Manipuri vocabulary established at Luke 4:18 for “good news to the poor” (মথৌ তাবা + নুংঙাইবগী পাউ), “blind” (মিত্তাবা), etc. This is an internal-consistency rule, not merely a cross-curriculum one. |
| Luke 7:27 | ”I send my messenger before your face” | John the Baptist | Malachi 3:1 [Direct Quotation / Messianic] | Confirms John’s forerunner role; keep messenger vocabulary distinct from the apostle (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা) term reserved for Christ’s later-commissioned sent ones. |
Luke 8 — Parable of the Sower; Calming the Storm; Legion; Woman with the Issue of Blood; Jairus’s Daughter
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 8:10 | ”Seeing they may not see; hearing they may not understand” | — | Isaiah 6:9-10 [Direct Quotation] | Parallels Romans 11:8’s hardening language (which itself combines Deuteronomy 29:4 and Isaiah 29:10) — a thematically related judicial-hardening motif. Flag for theologian review given its doctrinal weight alongside election themes. |
Luke 9 — Sending of the Twelve; Feeding the 5,000; Peter’s Confession; Transfiguration; Cost of Discipleship Sayings
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 9:30-31 | Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus at the Transfiguration | Moses, Elijah, Jesus | Exodus 24:15-18; Exodus 34:29-35; 1 Kings 19:8-18 [Typology / Messianic] | The Law and the Prophets testify to Christ. Teach as fulfillment typology — NOT as Jesus being one great teacher among two others in a lineage; avoid any guru-lineage parallel or avatar-sequence reading. |
| Luke 9:35 | ”This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him” | voice from heaven | Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 42:1; Deuteronomy 18:15 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | Deuteronomy 18:15’s “prophet like Moses” typology converges here with Sonship. TM-REUSE তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা + তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (election). |
| Luke 9:54 | ”Shall we call fire down from heaven?” | James, John, Elijah | 2 Kings 1:10 [Allusion, explicitly corrected by Jesus] | Jesus rejects the Elijah-precedent his disciples invoke; teaches that the kingdom advances by mercy, not by prophetic judgment-fire — relevant to the non-coercive character of “Kingdom of God Present and Future.” |
Luke 10 — Sending of the Seventy; Good Samaritan; Mary and Martha
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 10:15 | Capernaum’s coming judgment | — | Isaiah 14:13-15 [Allusion] | Judgment-oracle language against pride; keep categorically distinct from Hades/Naraka afterlife categories (see Luke 16 note below). |
| Luke 10:27 | The Great Commandment: love God (Deuteronomy 6:5) + love neighbor (Leviticus 19:18) | lawyer, Jesus | Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18 [Direct Double Quotation] | CRITICAL cross-curriculum rendering-consistency point. Leviticus 19:18 is also directly quoted in Romans 13:9. The Manipuri rendering of “love your neighbor as yourself” MUST be word-for-word identical in the Luke and Romans curricula. See Part 4, Rule 1. |
Luke 11 — The Lord’s Prayer; Beelzebul Controversy; Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 11:29-32 | Sign of Jonah; Queen of Sheba and Solomon | Jonah, Solomon, Queen of Sheba | Jonah 1:17-3:10; 1 Kings 10:1-13 [Typology / Messianic] | Jonah’s three days in the fish anticipates the Resurrection sign; “something greater than Jonah/Solomon is here” is an implicit but strong messianic self-claim. Treat as Critical for Messianic Promise doctrine, parallel to messianic_promise in the baseline registry. |
| Luke 11:49-51 | ”The blood of all the prophets, from Abel to Zechariah” | Abel, Zechariah | Genesis 4:8-10; 2 Chronicles 24:20-22 [Direct Allusion] | Canonical bookends (the first- and last-murdered prophet in Hebrew Scripture’s traditional ordering). Supply a translator’s note since Meitei readers will not intuit the Hebrew canon’s book order. |
Luke 12 — Fear Not; Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit; Rich Fool; Anxiety; Faithful Steward
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 12:53 | Household division along family lines | — | Micah 7:6 [Direct Allusion] | Ties to “Cost of Discipleship” doctrine — family loyalty subordinated to allegiance to Christ; sensitive given the centrality of yumnak (clan) loyalty in Meitei social structure. |
Luke 13 — Repent or Perish; Barren Fig Tree; Bent Woman Healed; Narrow Door; Lament over Jerusalem
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 13:19 | Mustard seed growing into a tree; birds nesting in its branches | — | Ezekiel 17:23; Daniel 4:10-12 [Typology] | Kingdom-growth imagery drawing on Old Testament tree-of-nations imagery; avoid conflating with Umang Lai sacred-grove tree symbolism. |
| Luke 13:34-35 | Lament over Jerusalem; “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” | Jerusalem | Psalm 118:26 [Direct Quotation / Messianic] | First of two occurrences of Psalm 118:26 in Luke (reappears at Luke 19:38); keep an identical rendering in both places (internal consistency rule). |
Luke 14 — Sabbath Healing; Humility at Banquets; Great Banquet Parable; Cost of Discipleship
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 14:8-10 | Seating at the wedding feast | — | Proverbs 25:6-7 [Direct Allusion] | Reversal ethic tying directly into “Good News to the Poor and Marginalized.” |
| Luke 14:11 | ”Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” | — | Ezekiel 21:26; Proverbs 3:34 [Allusion] | This exact reversal-saying recurs verbatim at Luke 18:14 (Pharisee and tax collector); keep the Manipuri rendering identical in both places. |
Luke 15 — Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, Prodigal Son
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 15:3-7 (Lost Sheep) | God himself as the seeking shepherd | God as shepherd | Ezekiel 34:11-16; Psalm 23:1-6 [Typology] | Foundational Old Testament background for God’s own shepherding character; feeds directly into Luke 19:10, the Gospel’s programmatic mission-summary verse. |
| Luke 15:11-32 (Prodigal Son) | The Father’s compassionate, initiative-taking love for the wayward | God as Father | Hosea 11:1-4 (God’s fatherly love for wayward Israel) [Typological Allusion] | Reinforces TM-REUSE ইপা’s warmth. The father’s running to embrace his son is a decisive reversal of typical patriarchal honor-protocol in both the ancient Mediterranean and contemporary Meitei cultural context — worth an explicit cultural note in curriculum materials. |
Luke 16 — Unjust Steward; Rich Man and Lazarus; Divorce Teaching
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 16:29-31 | ”They have Moses and the Prophets … neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead” | Moses, Lazarus, rich man | (thematic — sufficiency of the Old Testament canon) [Allusion] | Anticipates unbelief even in the face of Christ’s own Resurrection; reinforces the Critical Inspiration of Scripture doctrine’s sufficiency claim. |
Luke 17 — Forgiveness Seven Times; Ten Lepers; Kingdom Within/Among You
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 17:26-29 | ”As it was in the days of Noah … as it was in the days of Lot” | Noah, Lot | Genesis 6:5-8:22; Genesis 19:1-29 [Direct Typology] | Eschatological judgment typology; must be taught as real historical events, not as legendary parallels to any local flood/origin narrative — verify with a native theologian whether any Sanamahi cosmological narrative could be wrongly conflated here. |
| Luke 17:32 | ”Remember Lot’s wife” | Lot’s wife | Genesis 19:26 [Direct Allusion] | Warning against turning back from kingdom commitment; ties to “Cost of Discipleship” doctrine. |
Luke 18 — Persistent Widow; Pharisee and Tax Collector; Rich Young Ruler; Blind Beggar
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 18:14 | ”Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled…” (reprise from Luke 14:11) | Pharisee, tax collector | Ezekiel 21:26; Proverbs 3:34 [Allusion, reprise] | Keep rendering identical to Luke 14:11. |
| Luke 18:20 | The Decalogue quoted to the rich ruler | rich ruler | Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20 [Direct Quotation] | Establishes continuity with Mosaic ethical Law even as Jesus calls for a response beyond law-keeping (Luke 18:22); ties to Kingdom/discipleship-cost teaching. |
| Luke 18:38-39 | ”Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me” | blind beggar | (Davidic Messianic title) [Messianic] | Popular messianic acclamation. TM-REUSE দাউদগী চা-চাহি. |
Luke 19 — Zacchaeus; Ten Minas; Triumphal Entry; Temple Cleansing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 19:10 | ”The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” | Zacchaeus | Ezekiel 34:16 (God himself seeking the lost sheep) [Typology / Messianic — THESIS VERSE] | This is Luke’s programmatic mission-summary statement, structurally equivalent in weight to Romans 1:16-17. Apply the same cross-document consistency discipline the baseline gives Romans’ thesis text (see Part 4, Rule 5). |
| Luke 19:38 | ”Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord” | crowds | Psalm 118:26 (reprise of Luke 13:35) [Direct Quotation / Messianic] | Keep an identical rendering to Luke 13:35. |
| Luke 19:46 | ”My house shall be a house of prayer … a den of robbers” | Jesus | Isaiah 56:7; Jeremiah 7:11 [Direct Double Quotation] | Temple cleansing; ties “Prayer and Dependence on God” doctrine to the Temple’s original, God-given purpose. |
Luke 20 — Authority Question; Wicked Tenants; Caesar’s Tax; Resurrection Debate; Son of David/Lord
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 20:17 | ”The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” | Jesus | Psalm 118:22 [Direct Quotation / Messianic] | Cross-curriculum consistency flag: Romans 9:33 quotes the related Isaiah 8:14 / Isaiah 28:16 “stone of stumbling” material on the same theological theme (Israel’s rejection of its own Messiah). Not verbally identical but doctrinally the same motif — both curricula should cross-reference each other in teaching notes (see Part 4, Rule 2). |
| Luke 20:37 | ”God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob” (resurrection proof) | Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob | Exodus 3:6 [Direct Quotation] | Resurrection doctrine argued directly from the Torah; reinforces the baseline’s Critical resurrection-vs-rebirth distinction (never পুনর্জন্ম). |
| Luke 20:42-43 | ”The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand…” | David | Psalm 110:1 [Direct Quotation / Messianic] | Critical translation problem, flagged for human theologian review: Manipuri’s single TM-REUSE term মপু ইবুংগো would render BOTH “the LORD” (YHWH) and “my Lord” (the Messiah) identically in one verse, collapsing a distinction the passage depends on. Recommend glossing the first occurrence explicitly as তেংবাং মপু (God) and reserving মপু ইবুংগো for the second (“my Lord,” the Messiah), with an explicit translator note. |
Luke 21 — Widow’s Mite; Temple’s Destruction; Signs of the End; Watchfulness
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 21:24 | ”Jerusalem trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled” | — | Daniel 9:26-27; Zechariah 12:3 (background) [Allusion] | Handle with pastoral care; avoid contemporary geopolitical over-application given Manipur’s own history of contested territory and inter-community relations. |
| Luke 21:27 | ”The Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” | Son of Man | Daniel 7:13-14 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | TM-REUSE-adjacent মীওইগী মচানুপা + মতিক চাউবা; this is a unique, future, glorious return — not a repeatable avatar-descent. |
Luke 22 — Last Supper; Gethsemane; Betrayal; Peter’s Denial; Trial before Sanhedrin
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 22:20 | ”This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” | Jesus | Jeremiah 31:31-34; Exodus 24:8 [Direct Allusion / Typology — CRITICAL] | New covenant fulfillment; apply the baseline’s atonement/propitiation escalation rule (originally set for Romans 3:25) to this passage as well — human theologian review required every occurrence. |
| Luke 22:37 | ”He was numbered with the transgressors” | Jesus, Isaiah | Isaiah 53:12 [Direct Quotation / Messianic — CRITICAL] | Jesus explicitly applies Suffering Servant identity to himself. Direct parallel to Romans 4:25 and Romans 5:19’s own allusions to Isaiah 53 — rendering-consistency rule required (see Part 4, Rule 3). |
| Luke 22:69 | ”The Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God” | Jesus | Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13 [Direct Allusion / Messianic] | Same Psalm 110:1 material as Luke 20:42-43 — keep consistent; note the same double-Lord translation caution does not arise here since only one “Lord”-type term is at stake, but flag for theologian review as Critical Christology. |
Luke 23 — Trial before Pilate/Herod; Crucifixion; Penitent Thief; Jesus’ Death
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 23:34 | ”Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” | Jesus | Isaiah 53:12b (intercession for transgressors, echo) [Allusion] | Models “Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins” doctrine from the cross itself. |
| Luke 23:34b | ”They cast lots to divide his garments” | soldiers | Psalm 22:18 [Direct Allusion] | Part of the crucifixion narrative’s dense weave of Psalm 22 echoes. |
| Luke 23:35 | Mocking rulers: “if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One” | rulers | Psalm 22:7-8 [Allusion / Messianic] | Same Psalm 22 echo-cluster. |
| Luke 23:46 | ”Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” | Jesus | Psalm 31:5 [Direct Quotation] | Applies the baseline’s mandatory bare-থাওয়াই disambiguation rule (see 07_semantic_analysis.md, ch.23): this is Jesus’ own human spirit, not the Holy Spirit. |
Luke 24 — Resurrection; Emmaus Road; Commissioning; Ascension
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 24:26-27 | ”Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things … beginning with Moses and all the Prophets” | Jesus, two disciples | (whole-Old-Testament typological summary) [Messianic / Typology] | This is the programmatic hermeneutical key for every typological entry in this matrix: all Scripture converges on Christ’s suffering and glory. Recommend using this verse as the curriculum’s explicit teaching anchor for the whole cross-reference approach. |
| Luke 24:44 | ”Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled” | Jesus | (threefold Hebrew canon reference) [Messianic] | Reinforces the Critical Inspiration of Scripture doctrine, with its particular Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning sensitivity per the baseline. |
| Luke 24:46-47 | ”The Christ should suffer and on the third day rise … repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations” | Jesus | Hosea 6:2 (third-day pattern, background); Isaiah 53:1-12 (suffering); Isaiah 49:6 (light to the nations) [Typology / Messianic] | Summarizes the whole curriculum’s doctrinal spine in one verse: messianic suffering + bodily Resurrection + universal repentance-and-forgiveness proclamation to all nations — the Old Testament roots of the Great Commission. |
Part 2 — Messianic Reference Index
The following passages constitute explicit or near-explicit claims/acclamations of Jesus’ messianic identity and require Human theologian review per the baseline’s escalation rules (any segment containing Messianic Promise references).
| Passage | OT Source | Messianic Claim | Manipuri Term(s) Required | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luke 1:32-33 | 2 Samuel 7:12-16 | Eternal Davidic throne | দাউদগী চা-চাহি, তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক [TM-REUSE] | Critical |
| Luke 2:11 | (Davidic/royal title) | “Christ the Lord” born in David’s city | ক্রিস্তো মপু ইবুংগো [TM-REUSE] | Critical |
| Luke 2:25-32 | Isaiah 42:6; 49:6 | Light to the Gentiles, glory to Israel | মাংঙাল, অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ, মতিক চাউবা [reuse] | High |

Part 3 — Typological Patterns
| Type | OT Anchor | Fulfillment in Luke | Doctrine Tie | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adam | Genesis 1-3; Genesis 5:1-32 | Luke 3:23-38 (genealogy to Adam, “son of God”) | Universal Human Accountability [TM-REUSE]; parallels Romans 5:12-21 | Teach alongside Romans 5 as one unit; Adam’s universal headship, not a cyclical myth. |
| Moses / the Prophet like Moses | Deuteronomy 18:15 | Luke 9:30-35 (Transfiguration); Luke 24:27, 44 | Inspiration of Scripture; Fulfillment of Prophecy [TM-REUSE] | Christ fulfills, does not merely resemble, Moses; avoid a “great teacher among great teachers” framing. |
| David / Davidic king | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 110:1 | Luke 1:32-33; 18:38-39; 20:41-44 | Davidic Covenant; Lordship of Christ [TM-REUSE] | See Psalm 110:1 double-Lord caution above (Part 1, Luke 20). |
| Elijah / Elisha | 1 Kings 17-19; 2 Kings 1, 5 | Luke 1:17 (John the Baptist); Luke 4:25-27; 9:30, 54 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Savior for All Nations | Elijah-typology must never be phrased as reincarnation; Gentile-inclusion miracles (Zarephath, Naaman) directly anticipate Luke’s “all nations” doctrine. |
| Jonah | Jonah 1:17-3:10 | Luke 11:29-32 | Resurrection of Christ; Messianic Promise | The “sign of Jonah” (three days) anticipates bodily Resurrection — keep resurrection vocabulary reserved (সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা), not generalized to the Jonah narrative itself. |
| The Suffering Servant | Isaiah 52:13-53:12 | Luke 22:37; 23:34 (echo) | Atonement; Messianic Promise; parallels Romans 4:25, 5:19 | See Part 4 Rule 3 — direct rendering-consistency requirement with Romans. |
| The Seeking Shepherd | Ezekiel 34:11-16; Psalm 23 | Luke 15:3-7; 19:10 | Jesus as Savior for All People (the “lost”) | Luke 19:10 is the Gospel’s thesis-equivalent verse (see Part 4 Rule 5). |
| The Compassionate Father | Hosea 11:1-4 | Luke 15:11-32 | Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins; Compassion | TM-REUSE ইপা; father’s initiative models God’s own character, not a generic parable morality. |
| The Bridegroom | Hosea 2:19-20; Isaiah 62:5 | Luke 5:33-35 | (Christ’s identity) | Must not evoke Ras Lila romantic-devotional imagery. |
| The Rejected Cornerstone | Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 8:14; Isaiah 28:16 | Luke 20:17-18 | Messianic Promise; parallels Romans 9:33 | See Part 4 Rule 2. |
| The New Covenant / Sinai Covenant Blood | Exodus 24:8; Jeremiah 31:31-34 | Luke 22:20 | New Covenant (Critical, escalated per baseline atonement rule) | Distinguish from indigenous sacrificial-offering ritual logic; once-for-all, not repeatable. |
Part 4 — Parallels to Romans & Rendering-Consistency Rules
Because both Romans and Luke draw on shared Old Testament source texts, and because both curricula will circulate together within the same Manipuri-speaking church community, the following passages require identical or explicitly cross-referenced Manipuri renderings. These rules extend (and do not override) the baseline’s own “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
| Rule # | Luke Passage | Romans Passage | Shared OT Source | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Luke 10:27 | Romans 13:9 | Leviticus 19:18 | The Manipuri rendering of “love your neighbor as yourself” MUST be word-for-word identical in both curricula. Recommend building this rendering on TM-REUSE নুংশিবা (see 08_core_glossary.md Section B) rather than any প্রেম-adjacent vocabulary. |
| 2 | Luke 20:17-18 | Romans 9:33 | Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 8:14; Isaiah 28:16 | Not verbally identical citations, but the same “stumbling stone / rejected-yet-foundational stone” theological motif concerning Israel’s response to the Messiah. Both curricula’s teaching notes should explicitly cross-reference each other; the underlying “stone” imagery in Manipuri must avoid unintended resonance with any stone/serpent imagery associated with the Pakhangba foundation-myth tradition — confirm with a native theologian. |
| 3 | Luke 22:37 | Romans 4:25; Romans 5:19 | Isaiah 53:12 (and the wider Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Servant Song) | Both curricula describe Christ’s atoning death using Suffering Servant categories. The Manipuri vocabulary for “given up,” “for our transgressions,” “made righteous/many made righteous” should be coordinated across curricula so that a reader recognizes the same theological thread in both books. Escalate to human theologian review in both places. |
| 4 | Luke 3:22; Luke 9:35 | Romans 1:4 | Psalm 2:7 | TM-REUSE তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (son_of_god) must be used identically at all three loci; do not introduce a Luke-specific variant for the baptismal/transfiguration declarations. |
| 5 | Luke 19:10 | Romans 1:16-17 | Ezekiel 34:16 (background) / (Luke’s own programmatic statement) | Luke 19:10 (“the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost”) functions in the Luke curriculum exactly as Romans 1:16-17 functions in the Romans curriculum: the single-sentence thesis statement of the whole book. Apply the baseline’s “same rendering across all documents” discipline (originally reserved for Romans 1:16-17, Romans 8:28, and Romans 10:9-10) to Luke 19:10 as well. |
| 6 | Luke 3:6 (quoting Isaiah 40:5) | Romans 3:23; Romans 10:12-13 | Isaiah 40:5 (Luke); general universality principle (Romans) | Both curricula insist on unqualified universal scope (“all flesh,” “no distinction,” “everyone who calls”). Ensure Manipuri renderings in both curricula consistently avoid any softening qualifier, per the baseline’s explicit instruction not to soften universality language given Manipur’s inter-community sensitivities. |
| 7 | Luke 20:42-43; Luke 22:69 | Romans 10:9; Romans 8:34 | Psalm 110:1 | Both curricula depend on Psalm 110:1’s “the LORD said to my Lord” for Christ’s exalted Lordship. See Part 1’s Luke 20:42-43 note for the double-Lord translation strategy (distinguishing তেংবাং মপু from মপু ইবুংগো within a single verse); apply the same strategy wherever Romans cites or alludes to Psalm 110:1. |
| 8 | Luke 22:20 | (Romans’ broader covenant theology; baseline covenant term) | Jeremiah 31:31-34; Exodus 24:8 | The Luke-curriculum term অনৌবা ৱারেপ্পা (“new covenant”) is built directly on the baseline’s TM-REUSE ৱারেপ্পা (covenant). Any future Romans-curriculum discussion of covenant renewal must use this same compound rather than coining an independent alternative. |
| 9 | Luke 1:55, 1:73; Luke 3:8; Luke 16:22-31; Luke 19:9; Luke 20:37 | Romans 4:1-25; Romans 9:6-9 | Genesis 15:6; Genesis 17:1-8; Genesis 22:16-18 | Both curricula make Abraham the paradigm of faith-not-lineage righteousness. Abraham-related vocabulary (father of faith, children of Abraham, promise to Abraham) should be coordinated across curricula so a learner encountering Abraham in Luke recognizes the same figure and argument later in Romans. |
| 10 | Luke 4:16-30; Luke 24:47 | Romans 9-11 | Isaiah 42:6; Isaiah 49:6; Isaiah 61:1-2 | Both curricula anchor Gentile inclusion in Isaiah’s Servant-and-Nations material. TM-REUSE অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ (gentiles) and the doctrine framing of unity_of_jews_and_gentiles / universal_scope_of_gospel must be applied identically; Luke’s Nazareth-sermon rejection scene (Luke 4:28-30) and Romans 11’s olive-tree argument should be taught as complementary treatments of the same theological problem (Israel’s response to Gentile inclusion), not as unrelated topics. |
Part 5 — Coverage Statement
All 24 chapters of Luke have been reviewed for Old Testament quotations, allusions, messianic references, and typological patterns. Chapters containing no independent cross-reference material beyond items already logged under an earlier chapter (for example, Luke 18:14’s exact reprise of Luke 14:11, or Luke 19:38’s exact reprise of Luke 13:35) are explicitly marked “(reuse)” or “(reprise)” above rather than re-analyzed from first principles, consistent with the Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate. No chapter has been silently omitted. Part 4’s ten rendering-consistency rules must be loaded alongside translation_memory.json and 08_core_glossary.md before any Phase 2 segment translation of either the Luke or Romans curricula proceeds.
