Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — 3 John (Manipuri / Meiteilon)

Why it matters

3 John is the shortest book in the New Testament by Greek word count, but for Manipuri translation it is disproportionately high-risk: a single 14-verse personal letter surfaces 9 High-risk doctrines and one new Critical-adjacent term collision (this letter’s own coinage for “loves to be first” had to be deliberately engineered to avoid colliding with the baseline’s fixed word for “salvation”). This letter also introduces two genuinely new collision risks with Manipur’s live, currently practiced dual religious landscape — Sanamahism and Gaudiya Vaishnavism — that the Romans baseline package did not anticipate: ritual imitation of divine action (Ras Lila) colliding with 3 John’s central command to “imitate…good,” and clan/village hierarchical-authority norms colliding with the letter’s condemnation of Diotrephes’ self-seeking leadership. Every doctrine and term below extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package.

Key findings

  • Full-book coverage achieved trivially and completely: 3 John’s core passage (1:1-14) is coextensive with the entire book; no chapter was skipped, and this is documented explicitly in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md and analysis/11_doctrine_analysis.md.
  • Doctrine risk profile: 11 doctrines identified — 0 Critical, 9 High, 1 Medium, 1 Low. All 9 High-risk doctrines require human theologian review; 1 Medium-risk doctrine (Spiritual Fatherhood) requires native speaker review; 1 Low-risk doctrine (Personal Greeting) requires only automated review.
  • Term risk profile: of the terms newly introduced or specifically re-flagged for this book, 1 is Critical (God, inherited from Romans), 9 are High (elder, truth, soul, testify/testimony, stranger/traveling minister, the Name, loves-to-be-first, cast out/expel, imitate), 19 are Medium, and 16 are Low — consistent across assets/bible_term_registry.json, analysis/08_core_glossary.md, and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json.
  • One deliberate new coinage required theologian-grade engineering: φιλοπρωτεύω (“loves to be first,” 3 John 1:9) has no existing pejorative Meitei equivalent, since Meitei clan/village culture more readily has vocabulary praising first-rank assertiveness as a virtue. The coined compound হন্না ওইনবা পাম্মি was built specifically on হন্না (“first”) rather than on অহানবা (“salvation”) to prevent a serious cross-term collision — the single most consequential lexical decision in this curriculum.
  • Truth (অচুম্বা) is the letter’s dominant theme-word (6 occurrences) and was deliberately built on the same morpheme as the Romans baseline’s righteousness compound, giving strong cross-curriculum consistency, but its personification in 1:12 (“the truth itself testifies”) requires explicit fencing against a live populated-spirit-world misreading.

Risks

  • Imitate (মতুং ইনবা, 3 John 1:11) vs. Ras Lila: the letter’s central ethical command sits directly on top of a prestigious, UNESCO-recognized, actively performed Vaishnava devotional tradition of ritually reenacting Krishna’s divine acts. Without a mandatory teaching fence, “imitate the good” risks being heard as devotional reenactment rather than ordinary moral imitation.
  • Elder (অহল) and cast out/expel (কলিসিয়াদগী থাদোকপা) vs. Meitei clan/village authority custom: both terms sit on top of real, currently exercised social-authority categories (hereditary clan/village-chief elder status, Sanamahi ritual-elder roles tied to Apokpa veneration and Lai Haraoba leadership, and village-council powers of expulsion/ostracism). Without explicit fencing, Diotrephes’ condemned behavior could be misread as ordinary or even admirable leadership.
  • Testify/testimony (সাক্ষী পীবা) vs. maibi oracular trance-testimony: Lai Haraoba spirit-possession “testimony” is a live, currently practiced phenomenon, not a historical curiosity; ordinary factual-moral attestation must be sharply and repeatedly distinguished from it.
  • Stranger/traveling minister (লম্বীগী মী) vs. contemporary Manipur inter-community sensitivity: hospitality language risks being read as commentary on present-day ethnic/migrant dynamics rather than gospel-partnership obligation.
  • Soul (থাওয়াই, bare) vs. Holy Spirit and Sanamahi spirit-world: this is the letter’s only occurrence of this root, with no surrounding co-text to disambiguate it, making the mandatory three-way distinction (soul / Holy Spirit / Sanamahi spirit-beings) especially load-bearing at 3 John 1:2.

Opportunities

  • Strong cross-curriculum term reuse: অচুম্বা (truth), থাজবা-family terms (faithful act, obedience-of-faith root for “imitate”), মচা (spiritual children, sharing the Romans 8 adoption root), and কলিসিয়া (church) all reuse baseline Romans morphemes, reinforcing vocabulary consistency for learners moving between the two curricula.
  • A short, high-relational-warmth letter is well suited to modeling personal discipleship vocabulary (beloved, friend, greeting by name) that can anchor future curricula’s treatment of individual pastoral care within the church.
  • The Diotrephes/Demetrius contrast offers a ready-made, concrete teaching structure for church leadership formation in the Manipuri context, provided the leadership-pride and church-discipline-abuse doctrines are taught with the explicit cultural fencing this analysis specifies.
  1. Route all 9 High-risk doctrines (Hospitality, Imitating Good, Church Leadership and Pride, Abuse of Church Discipline, Commendation of Faithful Witness, Truth and Fellowship, Soul and Bodily Well-Being, the Name of Christ, Doing Good as Evidence) to human theologian review before Phase 2 translation is finalized, per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json.
  2. Obtain explicit human theologian confirmation of the new coinage হন্না ওইনবা পাম্মি (“loves to be first”) before any wide deployment, given its zero-precedent status in existing Manipuri Bible-translation literature.
  3. Require the mandatory teaching-fence notes specified in analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md (imitate/Ras Lila; elder/clan authority; cast-out/village-council custom; soul/Holy Spirit/Sanamahi spirit-world; the Name/ritual name-invocation; testimony/maibi oracle) to accompany every occurrence in curriculum materials, not merely as optional footnotes.
  4. Carry the মরূপ (“friend”) vs. ইচিল-ইনাও (“brothers”) distinction and the শব্দ-level ফত্তবা/κακός-πονηρός nuance forward into Phase 2 segment-level translator notes so back-translation reviewers can verify these are preserved in context despite shared Manipuri lemmas.
  5. Confirm ৩ যোহন / “3 যোহন” as the fixed citation form for this book before Phase 2 begins, and verify against a current printed Manipuri Bible edition per the Translation Landscape assessment.
