Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Philippians — English → Manipuri
Method and Scope
This analysis executes PRD Phase 1 Step 8 for the Philippians curriculum. It is built directly on top of the fixed Romans translation_memory.json (which this package MUST reuse exactly, per hard rule) and is cross-checked against the Philippians-specific 08_core_glossary.md and bible_term_registry.json already produced for this curriculum. Nothing below contradicts those artifacts; this document explains the linguistic reasoning behind them and surfaces remaining risk for Phase 2 review routing.
Coverage is FULL-BOOK: every chapter of Philippians (1–4) is addressed below, either through load-bearing terms in the doctrine matrix or through explicit “reviewed, no new terms” notes where a chapter’s content is already carried by baseline or already-analyzed vocabulary.
The core passage, Philippians 2:1–11 (the Christ Hymn), is the theological anchor of this analysis, not its scope boundary — it generates the largest single cluster of new terminology (kenosis, form of God, form of a servant, humility/humbling, exaltation, the universal confession) but the analysis below runs the full letter.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
| Doctrine | Available Manipuri Terms / Roots | Weaknesses / Gaps | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) | Baseline: মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (incarnation), তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (Son of God). New for Philippians: তেংবাং মপুগী মশক (form of God), তেংবাং মপুগা মান্না ওইবা (equal with God), লৌথোকপা য়াবা পোৎ (a thing to be grasped), নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা (emptied himself), দাসগী মশক (form of a servant), মীওইগী মান্নবা (likeness of men), মীওই ওইনা উবা (outward appearance), নিজমসক তম্বা ওইহনবা (humbled himself), ইনবা (obedient), ক্রুসদা সিবা (death of a cross). | Manipuri has no single native theological verb for “self-emptying” as a real historical, one-time act of relinquishment; all renderings are descriptive compounds built from ordinary vocabulary (personal-self + emptying/pouring-out). The region’s dominant devotional theology of divine descent (Gaudiya Vaishnava līlā, in which Krishna’s earthly appearance is explained by many Gaudiya theologians via yogamāyā-concealment rather than genuine limitation) is a live, sophisticated alternative framework that a bare lexical choice cannot pre-empt. দাস additionally collides with the devotee-identity suffix (as in names ending “-Das”), risking a reversed reading. | Retain the fixed compound নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা for ἐκένωσεν and flag EVERY occurrence for mandatory theologian review with an explicit teaching note contrasting it with yogamāyā/līlā theology. Keep দাসগী মশক for μορφὴν δούλου and δοῦλος (1:1) identically, with a standing flag explaining the devotee-suffix collision risk. Never substitute অবতার at any point in this cluster. |
| Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment | New: নুংঙাইবা (joy/rejoice, root shared with baseline নুংঙাইবগী পাউ), ফাগৎলবা (chains/imprisonment), ওৎপা (suffer/suffering, paired with baseline মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং at 1:29). | Manipuri’s most natural verb for “rejoice/celebrate,” হরাওবা, is the literal root of লাই হরাওবা (Lai Haraoba), the major Sanamahi festival of the Umang Lai’s ritual merrymaking. Avoiding the word entirely would sacrifice naturalness; using it without comment risks readers hearing festival gladness rather than gospel joy sustained through suffering. There is also no existing Manipuri Christian idiom for “joy grounded in present suffering” as a stable theological compound — this is a genuinely new pairing for the target audience. | Use নুংঙাইবা as the primary noun/adjective (already resonant with the fixed gospel term); where a verb form is unavoidable and হরাওবা is the natural choice, mandate an explicit distinguishing teaching note at every occurrence rather than silent avoidance. Phil 4:4 (“Rejoice in the Lord always”) is the single highest-visibility instance and should carry a permanent footnote in all Phase 2 outputs. |
| Unity and Humility in the Church | New: ৱাফম পীবা (encouragement/appeal), নুংশিবা (agapē love), পুক্নিং অমা ওইবা (of one accord), ৱাখল অমা ওইনা থাবা (mindset/phroneō), নিজমসকতগী থৌনা (selfish ambition), ৱাংথৌগী চাউথোকপা (empty conceit), নিং তম্বা (humility). | পুক্নিং (heart/mind) roots are reused across several distinct Greek terms (σύμψυχος/ἰσόψυχος, φρονέω) which is efficient but risks blending distinct nuances if not taught carefully. More seriously: Manipuri Vaishnavism’s bhakti dāsya-bhāva (a devotee’s humble servant-posture toward a superior deity) has no category at all for a superior humbling himself before inferiors — the exact reversal Phil 2:3–8 requires is structurally absent from the region’s dominant devotional grammar, not merely under-lexicalized. নুংশিবা also risks being heard through the lens of Ras Lila’s Krishna-Radha romantic-devotional imagery if context is not made explicit. | Use নিং তম্বা identically at 2:3 and 2:8 (এταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν) so the reader sees the command enacted by Christ himself — this shared root is the single most important structural decision in this doctrine cluster. Teach the dāsya-bhāva reversal explicitly as doctrine content, not as a translation footnote alone. Explicitly gloss নুংশিবা as self-giving, not romantic, love at first occurrence (2:1-2). |
| Righteousness by Faith versus the Law | Baseline reuse, unchanged: অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness), য়াথাং (law), থাজবা (faith). New: অহুম / আরানবা (rubbish/dung, skybala). | This cluster largely inherits Romans’ existing, well-tested vocabulary and risk notes; the main Philippians-specific addition is Paul’s autobiographical intensification in 3:4–9 (credentials counted as loss, then as filth). The risk is not a missing term but a flattening risk: translators may soften ζημία (“loss”) and σκύβαλα (“dung/rubbish”) into synonyms, erasing Paul’s deliberate escalation. | Reuse baseline terms without modification. For skybala, preserve the crude, shock-value register distinct from the milder “loss” term two clauses earlier; do not let either collapse toward a single polite gloss. |
| Contentment in All Circumstances | New: পুক্নিং থামজবা (autarkēs/contentment). | This is the letter’s thinnest vocabulary area. Manipuri (like most languages) has no single native lexical item cleanly separating (a) Stoic self-sufficiency, (b) Vaishnava bhakti’s santoṣa (a devotional contentment cultivated through seva/surrender to Krishna — a live, well-developed devotional category, not a historical curiosity), and (c) fatalistic resignation (ৱাইফম). Paul’s redefinition in 4:11–13 — contentment that is neither self-generated nor externally circumstantial but Christ-empowered — is a genuinely novel theological claim for this audience, not a repackaging of an existing local concept. | Use পুক্নিং থামজবা as a provisional descriptive compound but treat this as the single term in the letter MOST in need of explicit doctrinal teaching alongside translation, since no lexical choice alone can carry the three-way contrast. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence; pair 4:11 and 4:13 in the same teaching unit so “I have learned” (process) and “through him who strengthens me” (source) are never separated. |
| Citizenship in Heaven | Baseline root reused: তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক (kingdom of God). New: স্বর্গগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইবা (citizenship in heaven, 3:20), তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইনা হিংবা (conduct as citizens, 1:27). | This is the single most politically live term in the entire curriculum. Historic Meitei kingship carried its own strong subject-of-the-realm concept rooted in descent from the divine serpent-ancestor Pakhangba, giving “citizenship” a pre-existing, non-neutral resonance. Contemporary Manipur has also experienced serious, recent inter-community conflict over land, belonging, and citizenship status, making this an unusually charged everyday word, not an abstract political metaphor. | Use the compound built on the fixed kingdom-of-God root, never a bare political-citizenship loanword. MANDATORY theologian review at every occurrence, with an explicit teaching note that this doctrine (a) does not comment on present-day Manipur land/citizenship disputes and (b) does not ask believers to set aside earthly ethnic-community or national belonging, but adds a higher, heavenly primary identity above it. |
| Partnership in the Gospel | Baseline root reused: লোইনবা (fellowship/koinōnia). New compounds: নুংঙাইবগী পাউদা লোইনবা (partnership in the gospel, 1:5/4:15), মহাক্কী ওৎপগী লোইনবা (fellowship of his sufferings, 3:10), থাদোকপা এরাংবা / থাগবা অমসুং সেবাগী থবক (poured out/sacrifice and service, 2:17), মহই / মনম নুংশিৎলবা / লৌবা য়াবা থাগবা (fruit/fragrant offering, 4:17-18), মহাক্কী হিংবা থাদোকপা (risked his life, 2:30). | The sacrificial/cultic-offering vocabulary needed for 2:17 and 4:17-18 risks resonance with BOTH Sanamahi Lai Haraoba offerings to the Umang Lai and Vaishnava temple pūjā/seva offerings to Krishna — two distinct but equally live ritual-offering frameworks that this financial/sacrificial giving metaphor could be heard through. There is also no settled single Manipuri Christian term for “gospel partnership” as an ongoing, reciprocal, financially-embodied relationship (distinct from general “fellowship”). | Use লোইনবা-rooted compounds consistently at 1:5 and 4:15 for cross-passage identity. Teach all sacrificial-offering language (2:17; 4:17-18) explicitly as metaphor for costly, joyful gospel partnership, never as literal cultic offering paralleling either Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava pūjā/seva. |
| Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ | New athletic-metaphor set: চেন্নরিবা (press on/pursue), লৌথোকপা (lay hold of/attain), মানা (prize), মচক (goal/mark), মশক মান্না ওইহনবা (conformed to Christ, shares “form” root with the kenosis cluster). | Manipuri has no established Christian racing/athletic idiom comparable to Paul’s Greco-Roman stadium imagery; every term in this set is a first-attested provisional coinage for this curriculum, parallel to the caution the baseline itself applies to “covenant” and “imputed righteousness.” A further internal risk: লৌথোকপা (attain/lay hold of, 3:12-13) must NOT be confused with লৌথোকপা য়াবা পোৎ (a thing to be grasped, 2:6) despite the shared English gloss “grasp” — the theological direction is opposite (Christ refusing to grasp vs. Paul striving to attain). | Confirm the full athletic set with native speakers before Phase 2 deployment. Insert a standing translator note wherever চেন্নরিবা/লৌথোকপা/মানা/মচক occur, flagging the provisional status. Add an explicit disambiguation note wherever 3:12-14’s লৌথোকপা could be read alongside 2:6’s superficially similar English gloss. |
Chapters not separately tabled above (content fully covered by baseline-reused or already-tabled terms, reviewed with no additional new terms required): Phil 1:1 (δοῦλος/ἐπίσκοπος/διάκονος — tabled under Incarnation/Church Leadership below); Phil 4:1-9 general paraenesis (ইনগবা peace, থাগৎচরি thanksgiving, ফজবা পুক্নিং gentleness, কীবা অমসুং নীংথিজবা fear and trembling, ৱারী ৱারান্না grumbling — all baseline-reused or low-risk new compounds already fixed in the glossary, reviewed, no further gap analysis required beyond what is tabled).
Supporting Christological/Church Terms (feed directly into the doctrine clusters above)
| Doctrine (supporting) | Available Terms | Weaknesses | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lordship of Christ / Deity of Christ (feeds Incarnation cluster, 2:9-11) | Baseline reuse: | মিং পুম্নমক্কী মথক্তা লৈবা মিং risks being heard as one name added to the Umang Lai’s many named deities or Krishna’s many devotional names/forms rather than an exclusive, singular supremacy claim. ফোংদোকপা shares a root with the baseline’s prophet/prophecy terms and needs disambiguation testing. | Explicitly connect “the name above every name” to মপু ইবুংগো (Lord) at first occurrence so the totalizing, non-additive sense is clear. Test ফোংদোকপা for collision before Phase 2; substitute ফোংনা হায়বা if ambiguity is confirmed. Add Phil 2:11 to the same mandatory-theologian-review list as Romans 10:9. |
| Church Leadership (1:1) | New: চেক্শিন্নরিবা মী (overseer), থবক তৌবিরিবা (deacon). | No prior Manipuri Christian precedent verified; risk of conflation with Sanamahi village-elder oversight or Vaishnava temple-management offices. | Native speaker confirmation recommended; teach as spiritual-shepherding offices within কলিসিয়া specifically. |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2.1 Genuinely Missing Vocabulary (no attested Manipuri Christian precedent; new descriptive coinage required)
| Concept | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Kenosis / self-emptying as a single act | Missing | No single native verb; নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা is a first-attested compound for this curriculum. Highest-stakes coinage in the whole package. |
| Citizenship (heavenly, as theological category) | Missing | স্বর্গগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইবা is compound-built on the existing kingdom-of-God root; no prior “citizenship” theological vocabulary exists in Manipuri Christian usage. |
| Christ-empowered contentment (distinct from Stoic/bhakti/fatalistic contentment) | Missing | পুক্নিং থামজবা is provisional; the underlying three-way theological contrast (Stoic/bhakti-santoṣa/fate) has no single native lexical solution. |
| Athletic/racing metaphor set (press on, prize, goal, lay hold of) | Missing | Entire set is first-attested coinage; no established Manipuri Christian sports/racing idiom exists to draw on. |
| Agapē as distinct from romantic/devotional love | Partially missing | নুংশিবা exists as ordinary vocabulary but has no prior specialized theological narrowing distinguishing it from Ras Lila’s Krishna-Radha romantic register. |
| ”Form” (morphē) as a theological category (essential nature vs. outward appearance) | Missing | মশক is being asked to carry three distinct related senses (form of God, form of a servant, conformed-to-Christ) with no prior precedent distinguishing essential nature from outward appearance in Manipuri theological vocabulary. |
2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Explicit Fencing
These are cases where a natural-sounding Manipuri word already carries strong meaning within one or both live religious traditions (Sanamahism, Gaudiya Vaishnavism) and must be fenced off with explicit teaching, not merely avoided or silently substituted.
| Manipuri Term/Root at Risk | Competing Association | Fencing Required For | Fencing Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| দাস / দাসগী মশক | Gaudiya Vaishnava devotee-identity suffix (“servant of Krishna/Chaitanya,” as in names ending “-Das”) | Phil 1:1 (δοῦλος), 2:7 (μορφὴν δούλου) | Explicit teaching note at every occurrence: direction is reversed — God becoming servant, not a devotee becoming God’s servant. Never omit the note. |
| হরাওবা | Root of লাই হরাওবা (Lai Haraoba), the Sanamahi festival of the Umang Lai’s ritual merrymaking | Phil 1:4,18,25; 2:17-18; 4:4 (χαρά/χαίρω) | Explicit distinguishing note wherever the verb form is used; do not silently avoid the natural word — name the distinction each time. |
| অবতার | Krishna-avatar theology, expressed through the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila tradition | Incarnation (2:7), form of God (2:6), Son of God | NEVER use, per standing baseline prohibition; extend prohibition explicitly to all Philippians 2 incarnation vocabulary. |
| কৃপা | Bhakti-responsive divine favor (Krishna’s grace toward a devoted follower) | Grace (1:29, ἐχαρίσθη — suffering granted as grace) | Never substitute for the fixed baseline term; teach suffering-as-grace explicitly against a bhakti-merit reading. |
| ধর্ম | Vaishnavization-era religious-duty category | Law (3:6,9), righteousness (3:9) | Never use, per standing baseline prohibition; reuse য়াথাং and অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক unchanged. |
| শক্তি | Maibi trance-power (Lai Haraoba); Shakta-goddess power in regional syncretism | (Not directly lexicalized in Philippians but relevant to any “power” language in teaching 2:13, 4:13) | Avoid entirely; use descriptive compounds for divine enabling power, consistent with baseline’s power_of_god entry. |
| ৱাইফম | Impersonal fate/destiny | Contentment (4:11-13), calling/upward call (3:14) | Never use; contentment and calling must be taught as relational, Christ-grounded, not fatalistic. |
| viśvarūpa / avatar theology generally | Krishna’s temporary revealed cosmic form (Bhagavad Gita 11) | Form of God (2:6) | Explicit contrast required: μορφὴ θεοῦ names ETERNAL essential nature, not a temporary theophany granted for a specific purpose. |
| yogamāyā-concealment / līlā theology | Gaudiya Vaishnava explanation of Krishna’s descent as playful concealment without genuine limitation | Kenosis (2:7, ἐκένωσεν) | Single most important theological fence in the curriculum — must be taught explicitly at every occurrence, not left to lexical choice alone. |
| dāsya-bhāva | Bhakti devotee’s humble servant-posture toward a superior deity | Humility (2:3), humbled himself (2:8) | Teach the reversal explicitly: this is a superior humbling himself before inferiors, a category absent from dāsya-bhāva, which only runs the other direction. |
| santoṣa | Bhakti devotional contentment through seva/surrender | Contentment (4:11-13) | Fence explicitly: Paul’s contentment is Christ-empowered (4:13), not devotionally cultivated through ritual service. |
| Pakhangba-descent citizenship/subject-of-the-realm concept; contemporary Manipur land/citizenship politics | Historic Meitei royal-divine lineage; present-day inter-community conflict | Citizenship in heaven (3:20), conduct as citizens (1:27) | Explicit teaching note required at every occurrence: this doctrine does not comment on present-day political citizenship disputes nor replace earthly ethnic/national identity. |
| Sacrificial/pūjā/seva offering vocabulary (থাদোকপা এরাংবা, থাগবা অমসুং সেবাগী থবক, মহই/মনম নুংশিৎলবা/লৌবা য়াবা থাগবা) | Both Lai Haraoba grove offerings and Vaishnava temple pūjā/seva | Poured out/sacrifice and service (2:17); fruit/fragrant offering (4:17-18) | Teach explicitly as metaphor only for gospel-partnership giving, never as literal ritual offering paralleling either tradition’s cultic practice. |
| মিং পুম্নমক্কী মথক্তা লৈবা মিং | Umang Lai’s many named deities; Krishna’s many devotional names/forms | Name above every name (2:9) | Teach as exclusive, singular, non-additive supremacy — connect explicitly to মপু ইবুংগো (Lord) so it is not heard as one more name in an existing divine-name inventory. |
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Decision Type | Terms | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Transliterate (proper names/titles, per established Manipuri Bible convention) | জিসু (Jesus), ক্রিস্তো (Christ/Messiah), দাউদ (David, not load-bearing in Philippians but retained for cross-book consistency), ইস্রায়েল (Israel, if referenced) | These are fixed in the baseline as established Manipuri Bible forms; Philippians introduces no new proper names requiring a transliteration decision. |
| Reuse fixed baseline descriptive compounds unchanged (no new paraphrase decision needed) | গ্রেস, righteousness, law, salvation, faith, lord, god, holy spirit, father, glory, peace, thanksgiving, fellowship, calling, kingdom of God, resurrection | Per hard rule: baseline renderings are non-negotiable and must be reused exactly. |
| Paraphrase via descriptive compound (new terms, no transliteration option available) | Kenosis (নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা), form of God (তেংবাং মপুগী মশক), form of a servant (দাসগী মশক), citizenship in heaven (স্বর্গগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইবা), humility (নিং তম্বা), contentment (পুক্নিং থামজবা), mindset (ৱাখল অমা ওইনা থাবা) | Greek theological technical terms (ἐκένωσεν, πολίτευμα, ταπεινοφροσύνη, αὐτάρκης) have no Manipuri loanword tradition (unlike, say, “Christo” or “Israel”); transliterating the Greek would be opaque to readers and was rejected in favor of the baseline’s own established descriptive-compound methodology (as used for “justification,” “adoption,” “imputed righteousness” in Romans). |
| Rejected transliteration candidates (considered and explicitly rejected) | কেনোসিস (a raw transliteration of “kenosis”) — rejected as inaccessible jargon with no anchoring in ordinary Manipuri and no ability to carry the self-emptying content without an attached gloss anyway; পলিতেউমা (raw transliteration of πολίτευμα) — rejected for the same reason; আউটার্কেস/অটার্কি — rejected, same reason. | Consistent with the baseline’s own practice: Romans never transliterates abstract Greek doctrinal nouns (it did not transliterate δικαιοσύνη as “dikaiosynē-styled” Manipuri, for example), reserving transliteration for proper names/titles only. Philippians follows the same discipline. |
| Provisional coinage requiring native-speaker/theologian confirmation before wide deployment | Entire athletic-metaphor set (চেন্নরিবা, লৌথোকপা, মানা, মচক), encouragement/appeal (ৱাফম পীবা), contentment (পুক্নিং থামজবা), overseer/deacon (চেক্শিন্নরিবা মী, থবক তৌবিরিবা) | No attested precedent in currently available printed Manipuri Bible editions has been verified for these; flagged per the same caution the baseline itself applies to “covenant” and “imputed righteousness.” |
4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × strength of competing cultural association × visibility/frequency in the letter).
- ἐκένωσεν / “emptied himself” (Phil 2:7) — নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা. The single highest-stakes ambiguity in the curriculum. Directly contradicts Gaudiya Vaishnava yogamāyā/līlā theology, in which Krishna’s descent involves no genuine relinquishing of power. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence; must never be taught by word choice alone.
- πολίτευμα / “citizenship in heaven” (Phil 3:20) and πολιτεύεσθε (1:27) — স্বর্গগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইবা / তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইনা হিংবা. Collides with both the historic Pakhangba-descent royal-subject concept and present-day, highly sensitive Manipur inter-community citizenship/land disputes. Risk of being heard as political commentary rather than eschatological hope.
- μορφὴ θεοῦ / “form of God” (Phil 2:6) — তেংবাং মপুগী মশক. Risk of collapsing into viśvarūপ (Krishna’s temporary revealed form) or avatar theology generally; must be taught as eternal essential nature, not time-bound theophany.
- μορφὴν δούλου / δοῦλος / “form of a servant” and “servant” self-designation (Phil 1:1; 2:7) — দাসগী মশক. The দাস root’s overlap with the Vaishnava devotee-identity suffix risks an exactly reversed reading (devotee serving God vs. God becoming servant).
- ταπεινοφροσύνη / ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν / “humility” / “humbled himself” (Phil 2:3, 8) — নিং তম্বা / নিজমসক তম্বা ওইহনবা. No structural equivalent exists in bhakti dāsya-bhāva for a superior humbling himself before inferiors; risk of readers assimilating this to devotee-humility-toward-a-superior instead.
- αὐτάρκης / “contentment” (Phil 4:11-13) — পুক্নিং থামজবা. Sits at the intersection of three distinct competing frameworks (Stoic self-sufficiency, bhakti santoṣa, fatalistic ৱাইফম-resignation); the thinnest vocabulary area in the letter.
- χαρά / χαίρω / “joy,” “rejoice” (Phil 1:4,18,25; 2:17-18; 4:4) — নুংঙাইবা / (verb) হরাওবা. হরাওবা’s root identity with লাই হরাওবা (Lai Haraoba) risks conflating gospel joy-in-suffering with Sanamahi festival merrymaking; highest-visibility instance is 4:4, the letter’s most quotable verse.
- σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε / “work out your salvation” (Phil 2:12), if separated from 2:13 — নিংথীনা লৈরিবা অহানবা মপুং ফাহনবা. Live risk of a works-merit misreading that collapses directly into the bhakti-devotional-achievement framework the baseline’s grace entry already warns against; mandatory pairing with 2:13 in every teaching unit.
- τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα / “the name above every name” (Phil 2:9) — মিং পুম্নমক্কী মথক্তা লৈবা মিং. Risk of being heard as one more name added to the Umang Lai’s populated deity-name inventory or Krishna’s many devotional names, rather than an exclusive, non-additive supremacy claim.
- ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων / cosmic scope (Phil 2:10) — স্বর্গগী, তলবগী, অমসুং লৈমাইগী মখাদা লৈবা পুম্নমক. Must be taught as encompassing, not excluding, the Umang Lai spirit-realm and Vaishnava cosmological lokas; risk of being read as one regional cosmological claim among several rather than total supremacy.
- σκύβαλα / “rubbish, dung” vs. ζημία / “loss” (Phil 3:7-8) — অহুম/আরানবা vs. the milder “loss” term. Risk of flattening Paul’s deliberate rhetorical escalation into a single polite synonym.
- δεσμά / “chains” reframed as gospel-advancing (Phil 1:12-14) — ফাগৎলবা. Lower doctrinal risk in itself, but pairing failure (translating imprisonment without the surrounding joy/advance-of-gospel framing) would blunt the letter’s central paradox.
- καταλαμβάνω / “lay hold of, attain” (Phil 3:12-13) vs. ἁρπαγμόν / “a thing to be grasped” (Phil 2:6) — লৌথোকপা (shared English gloss “grasp/attain,” opposite theological valence). Internal cross-reference risk within this same curriculum rather than an external cultural-collision risk; requires an explicit disambiguating note wherever both terms could be encountered by the same learner.
- σπένδομαι / θυσία καὶ λειτουργία and καρπός / ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας / θυσία δεκτή / sacrificial-offering metaphors (Phil 2:17; 4:17-18) — risk of literal-ritual-offering misreading against both Lai Haraoba and Vaishnava pūjā/seva backgrounds; moderate risk given the metaphor is financial/vocational rather than central doctrine, but recurring twice in the letter.
- ἐξομολογήσηται / “confess openly” (Phil 2:11) — ফোংদোকপা. Root-sharing with the baseline’s প্রphet/prophecy terms creates a lower-stakes but real disambiguation task before Phase 2 deployment.
5. Full-Book Chapter Coverage Confirmation
| Chapter | Load-bearing new/baseline terms present | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | gospel, grace, faith, salvation, partnership in the gospel, calling (indirectly via kingdom), overseer, deacon, servant/doulos, joy/rejoice, chains/imprisonment, suffer/suffering, conduct as citizens | Reviewed — full analysis above |
| 2 | The entire Christ Hymn cluster (form of God, equal with God, thing to be grasped, emptied himself, form of a servant, likeness of men, outward appearance, humbled himself, obedient, death of a cross, highly exalted, name above every name, bow the knee, cosmic scope, confess openly, Jesus Christ is Lord), plus encouragement, love/agapē, of one accord, mindset, selfish ambition, empty conceit, humility, work out salvation, fear and trembling, grumbling/disputing, poured out/sacrifice and service, like-minded (Timothy), risked his life | Reviewed — full analysis above; core passage, highest term density in the letter |
| 3 | righteousness, law, faith (object = Christ), rubbish/dung, fellowship of his sufferings, resurrection, conformed to Christ, press on/pursue, lay hold of/attain, prize, goal/mark, look to/consider (root cross-reference), citizenship in heaven, savior, transform (resurrection body) | Reviewed — full analysis above |
| 4 | peace, thanksgiving, contentment, gentleness, fruit/fragrant offering, partnership in the gospel (4:15 recurrence), joy/rejoice (4:4 recurrence, highest-visibility instance) | Reviewed — full analysis above |
No chapter of Philippians is silently omitted; every chapter’s load-bearing vocabulary is represented in Section 1 or 2 above, and low-risk residual paraenetic material (e.g., 4:1-9’s general exhortations beyond the specific terms tabled) is confirmed reviewed with no additional new-term gap identified beyond what is already fixed in the accompanying core glossary and term registry.
6. Summary Recommendations for Phase 2
- Load this analysis alongside
translation_memory.json, the Philippians08_core_glossary.md, andbible_term_registry.jsonbefore any segment translation begins. - Treat items #1–#6 in the ranked ambiguity list (Section 4) as requiring a standing, non-optional teaching note at every single occurrence — not merely a flag for reviewer discretion.
- Prioritize native-speaker naturalness confirmation for the entire athletic-metaphor set (chapter 3) and for পুক্নিং থামজবা (contentment, chapter 4) before wide deployment, following the same provisional-coinage caution the baseline applies to “covenant” and “imputed righteousness.”
- Escalate Phil 2:11’s confession to the same mandatory-theologian-review tier as Romans 10:9, per the existing registry entry.
