Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 2 John (Full Book) | English → Manipuri
Scope Note
2 John is a single-chapter, 13-verse epistle. Per the PRD full-book-coverage mandate, this analysis treats the entire letter, first verse to last. Because the book contains only one chapter, the “chapter-by-chapter” requirement is satisfied by:
- Section A — verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage, 2 John 1:4–11 (the theological anchor for this curriculum: Walking in Truth and Love; Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ).
- Section B — full coverage of the remaining verses of the same (only) chapter, 2 John 1:1–3 and 1:12–13, which fall outside the core passage but are still part of the book and carry load-bearing terms (e.g. χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη, ἐκλεκτή, χαρά).
There is no second chapter to report as “reviewed, no new terms” — 2 John has exactly one chapter, and this document accounts for all thirteen of its verses.
All terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json (grace, peace, God, Father, Son of God, Jesus, Christ/Messiah, fellowship, incarnation, sin, election) reuse the recorded Manipuri rendering exactly, per the hard rule. New terms proposed here follow the baseline’s descriptive-compound methodology and are flagged for confirmation with a Manipuri-speaking theologian where noted, consistent with baseline practice (e.g. “covenant,” “imputed righteousness”).
Section A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 John 1:4–11
2 John 1:4
Gloss: “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| rejoiced | Ἐχάρην (echarēn), root χαίρω (chairō) | “I was made glad / I rejoiced” | Joy ranging from simple gladness to festive celebration; root shared with χαρά (v.12) and the greeting formula χαίρειν (vv.10-11) | rejoiced, was glad, was overjoyed | The elder’s pastoral joy at seeing believers persevere in truth — relational, not ritual, joy | নুংঙাইবা (nungngaiba) — verb form নুংঙাইখি | High. নুংঙাইবা is deliberately reused from the baseline’s নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (“gospel,” lit. “joyful news”) rather than হরাওবা, the ordinary Manipuri word for festive rejoicing that is also the root of Lai Haraoba, the major Sanamahi forest-deity festival. Using হরাওবা here would risk directly evoking that festival name in a doctrinally loaded context. |
| children | τέκνων (teknōn), sg. τέκνον | ”born ones, offspring” | Literal children; metaphorically, spiritual children/congregation members under the author’s pastoral care | children, sons, followers | Believers under the elder’s spiritual oversight, echoing the corporate “children of God” language elsewhere in the NT | মচা (macha) / pl. মচাশিং | Medium. Context-sensitive between literal offspring and spiritual congregation members; must be read alongside the baseline’s adoption doctrine (মচা ওইনা লৌবা) without over-theologizing every occurrence as formal adoption language. |
| walking | περιπατοῦντας (peripatountas), root περιπατέω | ”walking about, going on foot” | Metaphorical for ongoing conduct/lifestyle, a common NT idiom for habitual moral-spiritual behavior | walking, living, conducting themselves | Truth is not merely believed but lived out continuously — the letter’s central behavioral metaphor | চৎপা (chatpa) | Medium. Natural Manipuri verb for “to walk/go,” extended metaphorically for conduct. Must be distinguished from the ritual processional “walking” undertaken during Lai Haraoba observances at Umang Lai sacred groves; translator notes should clarify this is ethical/relational conduct, not ritual movement. |
| truth | ἀληθείᾳ (alētheia), dat. of ἀλήθεια | ”that which is not hidden/concealed; reality” | Doctrinal truth about Christ; also faithfulness, sincerity, reality as opposed to falsehood | truth, truthfulness, reality | The apostolic message about who Jesus Christ is (cf. v.7); truth is both propositional (right doctrine) and relational (lived faithfulness) | অচুম্বা (achumba) | High. অচুম্বা is the morpheme already embedded in the baseline’s অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (“righteousness”), so it carries an existing Christian-doctrinal association. It must be explicitly distinguished from সত্য (Sanskrit-derived, common in Vaishnava cosmological usage — e.g. Satya Yuga, “the age of truth”) to avoid readers hearing a cyclical cosmic-order concept rather than truth centered on Christ’s person and work. |
| commandment | ἐντολὴν (entolēn), acc. of ἐντολή | ”that which is charged/commanded” | A specific injunction, distinct from νόμος (the Law/Torah as a whole code); here, the apostolic/dominical command to love | commandment, instruction, charge | The command to love one another, received “from the beginning” (v.5) — apostolic tradition, not new legislation | য়াথাং (yathang) | High. Same lexeme as the baseline’s রেণ্ডারিং for “law” (Mosaic Law/Torah, Romans register). Reused here because it is the natural Manipuri word for “rule/command,” but a translator note MUST clarify that in 2 John য়াথাং refers to the apostolic command to love, not the Mosaic law-code, to prevent readers importing Romans’ Torah-fulfillment discussion into this very different context. |
| Father | πατρός (patros), gen. of πατήρ | ”father” | God as personal Father; distinct from a human father | Father, the Father | The commandment’s ultimate source is God the Father himself, grounding ethical instruction in divine origin | ইপা (Ipa) — reused exactly from baseline | Critical (per baseline). Reuse ইপা unchanged; do not substitute a royal-divine-lineage title or devotional honorific. |
2 John 1:5
Gloss: “And now I ask you, lady, not as though writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ask/beseech | ἐρωτῶ (erōtō), root ἐρωτάω | ”I ask, request” | Ranges from neutral inquiry to earnest appeal/entreaty | ask, beseech, request, urge | Pastoral appeal, not command by raw authority — persuasive, relational tone | হায়জবা (haijaba) | Low. Already established for “intercession” contexts in the baseline (মখোয়গী মফমদা হায়জবা); reused here for a direct personal appeal. |
| lady | κυρία (kyria), fem. of κύριος | ”lady, mistress” (fem. form of “lord”) | An honorific address to a woman of standing, or a personification of a local congregation | lady, madam | Almost certainly either a specific respected woman or a personification of a house-church community under her care | ইকায়খুম্লবা নুপী (ikayakhumlaba nupi, “an honored/respected woman”) | Medium. Avoid লেইমা (“lady/queen”), the ordinary Manipuri honorific for a woman of rank, because লেইমা is also embedded in the name of Leimarel Sidabi, a major Sanamahi goddess figure; using it here risks an unintended goddess association in a greeting addressed to a Christian recipient. |
| new commandment | ἐντολὴν καινὴν (entolēn kainēn) | “a fresh/previously-unknown command” | Emphasizes novelty; here negated — this is NOT a new command | new commandment, novel instruction | The command to love is not an innovation but apostolic tradition “from the beginning” | য়াথাং অনৌবা (yathang anouba) | Medium. Compound built on the already-flagged য়াথাং; keep the negation (“not as though…new”) clear so learners do not read love-command as a post-apostolic innovation. |
| from the beginning | ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς (ap’ archēs) | “from the origin/start” | The start of the apostolic movement or of the readers’ instruction in the faith | from the beginning, from the first | Continuity with the earliest apostolic teaching, a key theme of the letter’s perseverance doctrine | অহoubদগী (ahoubadagi) | Low. Straightforward temporal phrase; no significant syncretism risk, though translators should avoid phrasing that evokes Sanamahi/Vaishnava creation-cosmology “beginning of the world” narratives — this is about apostolic teaching’s origin, not cosmogony. |
| love one another | ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους (agapōmen allēlous) | “let us love one another” | Mutual, reciprocal love within the believing community | love one another, love each other | The content of the “old/new” commandment; communal, self-giving love modeled on Christ | নুংশিবা (nungshiba) — reciprocal: “অমাগা অমাগা নুংশিনবা” | High. নুংশিবা is the ordinary warm Manipuri word for love, chosen over প্রেম (prem), the Sanskrit-derived term strongly associated in Manipuri Vaishnavism with the romantic/devotional Krishna-Radha love celebrated in the Ras Lila tradition. প্রেম risks importing a specific devotional-erotic frame; নুংশিবা keeps the register relational/familial-communal, matching Romans’ baseline choice not to use ভক্তি for faith-related terms. |
2 John 1:6
Gloss: “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love (noun) | ἡ ἀγάπη (hē agapē) | “the love” | The defining Christian virtue/practice, self-giving and obedience-expressed | love, charity (archaic) | Love is defined here not as sentiment but as obedient conduct — love and obedience are fused, not opposed | নুংশিবা (nungshiba) — same as v.5 | High. Same rationale as v.5; consistency required across the letter (this verse explicitly defines love as walking in obedience — a definition that must not be softened into feeling-only language). |
| walk / walk in it | περιπατῶμεν / περιπατῆτε (root περιπατέω) | “we might walk / you should walk” | See v.4 | walk, live, conduct ourselves | Repeated for emphasis: love is inseparable from ongoing obedient conduct | চৎপা (chatpa) | Medium. Same as v.4; consistency of rendering required since this verse structurally repeats the verb twice for rhetorical emphasis. |
| commandments | τὰς ἐντολὰς (tas entolas), pl. | ”the commands” | Plural form encompassing the whole body of apostolic ethical instruction, summarized as love | commandments, instructions | The commandments are summarized/fulfilled in the single command to love — echoes the “love fulfills the law” theme found elsewhere in the NT | য়াথাংশিং (yathangshing) | High. Same flagged term as vv.4-5; plural form. Translator note should tie this explicitly to the “obedience of faith” doctrine already established in the baseline Romans package (থাজবগী ইনবা) so the curriculum reads as theologically continuous with Romans. |
2 John 1:7
Gloss: “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in flesh; this is the deceiver and the antichrist.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| deceivers | πλάνοι (planoi), sg. πλάνος | ”wanderers, ones who lead astray” | Those who mislead others into doctrinal error, often deliberately | deceivers, imposters, seducers (archaic) | Specific false teachers denying Christ’s incarnation, the letter’s central warning | অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই (aranba tambiba miwoi, “person who teaches falsehood”) | Critical. This descriptive compound is provisional and should be confirmed with a Manipuri-speaking theologian before wide deployment, following the same caution the baseline applied to novel compounds (e.g. “imputed righteousness”). It must convey deliberate doctrinal falsehood, not a morally bad person in general (that sense is covered separately by পাপ/sin vocabulary), and must not be confused with accusations against a traditional মৈবা/মৈবী ritual specialist, whose social role is unrelated to this doctrinal category. |
| went out into the world | ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸν κόσμον | ”went forth into the world” | Movement outward from the church into the wider society/public sphere | went out into the world, spread abroad | The deceivers’ teaching is actively circulating in public discourse, not confined to a fringe | তৈবাং লৈবাক্তা থোরক্লি (taibang leibakta thorakli) | Medium. “World” (তৈবাং লৈবাক) must be distinguished from the cosmological “world” of Sanamahi creation narratives (the Sanamahi/Pakhangba account of the universe’s origin); here it denotes the present social-religious sphere the church must discern, not cosmogony. |
| confess | ὁμολογοῦντες (homologountes), root ὁμολογέω | ”to say the same thing, to acknowledge/agree” | Public, definite affirmation of a truth-claim, not private opinion | confess, acknowledge, admit | Open, verbal affirmation of the true nature of Jesus Christ — the doctrinal test the letter proposes | ফোংদোকপা (phongdokpa) | High. Reuses the root already established in the baseline for প্রফেসি/prophecy vocabulary (ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল, “declaration”), extending it here to mean “openly declare/affirm as true.” Must be distinguished from a maibi’s trance-utterance declarations during Lai Haraoba, which are oracular, not doctrinal-propositional. |
| Jesus Christ coming in flesh | Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί | ”Jesus Christ coming in flesh” | The doctrinal core of the Incarnation: the eternal Son’s real, permanent assumption of human nature and historical arrival | Jesus Christ come/coming in the flesh, Jesus Christ has come in human flesh | The specific heresy in view (likely proto-Gnostic/docetic) denied that Christ truly took on real human flesh; this is the same doctrine as the baseline’s Incarnation entry | জিসু ক্রিস্তোনা মীওইগী মহৈ লৌরকপা (Jisu Christona miwoigi mahai lourakpa) — built directly on the baseline’s মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা | CRITICAL. This is the letter’s doctrinal center and must reuse the baseline Incarnation rendering exactly, with the FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION rule enforced without exception: NEVER use অবতার. Because Manipuri Vaishnavism’s living Ras Lila tradition celebrates Krishna’s repeated avatar-descents as prestigious, actively performed religious identity, this verse’s denial-of-the-incarnation warning must be taught as: Christ’s incarnation was a real, permanent, one-time assumption of a genuine physical human body (হাক্চাং/flesh), not a temporary or repeatable divine appearance. Every occurrence requires human theologian review. |
| antichrist | ὁ ἀντίχριστος (ho antichristos) | “against/instead-of Christ” | A specific eschatological opponent-figure and, by extension, anyone who denies Christ’s true identity | antichrist, the Antichrist, opponent of Christ | The one who sets himself against or in place of the true Christ by denying his incarnation | এণ্টিক্রিস্তো (Antikristo) — transliteration, glossed as ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা (“opponent of Christ”) | CRITICAL — new registry entry required. This term must be explicitly distinguished, in translator notes, from the Vaishnava eschatological expectation of Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu expected to appear at the end of the current age (Kali Yuga) to destroy evil and renew the world. An “opponent/rival of Christ” figure could otherwise be assimilated by Meitei Vaishnava readers into an expected-final-avatar framework; 2 John’s ἀντίχριστος is a denier of Christ’s true incarnation, not a rival redeemer-avatar figure awaited within an ongoing cycle. Human theologian review required for every occurrence. |
2 John 1:8
Greek: βλέπετε ἑαυτούς, ἵνα μὴ ἀπολέσητε ἃ εἰργασάμεθα, ἀλλὰ μισθὸν πλήρη ἀπολάβητε. Gloss: “Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| watch yourselves | βλέπετε ἑαυτούς (blepete heautous) | “see/look to yourselves” | Vigilance, self-guarding attentiveness against a specific threat | watch yourselves, take heed to yourselves, look to yourselves | A call to active doctrinal vigilance against the deceivers just named | চেক্সিন্নবা (cheksinnaba) | Medium. Standard vigilance vocabulary; low syncretism risk but should be framed as doctrinal watchfulness (guarding against false teaching), not superstitious protective vigilance against spiritual harm of the kind associated with Umang Lai propitiation practices. |
| lose | ἀπολέσητε (apolesēte), root ἀπόλλυμι | ”destroy, lose, forfeit” | Loss of a previously-gained reward/standing, not annihilation of personal existence | lose, forfeit, destroy | The danger is forfeiting the fruit of faithful ministry/discipleship through doctrinal compromise | মাংহনবা (manghanba) | Medium. Must be read as loss of reward/fruit, not as a threat to eternal security itself (which the baseline’s assurance_of_salvation doctrine addresses separately); avoid implying salvation itself is at stake by works-loss. |
| worked for | εἰργασάμεθα (eirgasametha), root ἐργάζομαι | ”we worked, labored, accomplished” | Effort expended in ministry/teaching, producing durable spiritual fruit | worked for, accomplished, labored for | The apostolic/pastoral labor invested in the readers’ spiritual formation | থবক (thabak) | Medium. Must be distinguished from সেবা (bhakti devotional service performed to build divine favor); this is ministry labor whose fruit can be lost through doctrinal compromise, not merit accumulated toward salvation. |
| full reward | μισθὸν πλήρη (misthon plērē) | “full/complete wage, payment for labor” | The full measure of the reward due for faithful service; not salvation itself, but a reward for perseverance | full reward, complete wages, full recompense | Eschatological reward for perseverance in truth, distinct from the free gift of salvation | থবকী মানুং (thabakki manung, “the reward of labor”) | Medium — flag for native speaker confirmation. No settled attested Manipuri Bible term found for this specific sense of eschatological reward; the descriptive compound proposed here should be checked against the current printed Manipuri Bible (as the baseline instructs for proper names) before finalization. Care must be taken not to blur this reward-for-perseverance concept with grace/justification vocabulary already fixed as unmerited
Gloss: “Everyone who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| goes ahead / transgresses | ὁ προάγων (ho proagōn), root προάγω | ”the one going forward/ahead” | To go beyond or run ahead of received teaching, i.e., doctrinal overreach into innovation/error | goes beyond, does not abide, transgresses, runs ahead | Departing from apostolic teaching under the guise of spiritual “progress” — a direct warning against doctrinal innovation | হেন্না চৎপা (henna chatpa, “going too far ahead”) | High. Must be framed as doctrinal overreach specifically, not general moral failure; the semantic nuance (claiming advanced spiritual insight while abandoning core teaching) is theologically significant for the “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ” doctrine and should not collapse into simple disobedience vocabulary. |
| abide / abiding | μένων (menōn), root μένω | ”remaining, staying, continuing” | Continuous, settled dwelling — remaining in a state or relationship over time, not a momentary act | abide, remain, continue | Persevering fidelity to apostolic teaching as the mark of genuine relationship with God | লৈথিবা (leithiba, “to continue remaining”) | High — flag for native speaker confirmation. This verb is doctrinally load-bearing (repeated three times in vv.9 alone) and underlies the whole “Perseverance” doctrine of the curriculum. It must convey settled, continuous relationship, not a temporary or conditional stay, and must not be confused with the concept of a household deity or ancestral spirit “remaining” resident in a home shrine, a live category in Sanamahi household religion. Recommend confirming this exact verb form against a printed Manipuri Bible (John’s Gospel “abide in me” passages, if translated, would be the most relevant precedent). |
| the teaching of Christ | τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ | ”the teaching/doctrine of Christ” | The body of authoritative apostolic instruction originating in and about Christ | the teaching of Christ, Christ’s doctrine | The doctrinal content (especially about Christ’s incarnation) that must be preserved unaltered | ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা (Christogi tambiba) | High — new registry entry. Must be distinguished from a Vaishnava guru’s spiritual instruction within the guru-parampara (teacher-lineage) tradition and from a মৈবা’s traditional ritual instruction; “the teaching of Christ” names a fixed, apostolic, once-given body of doctrine, not an evolving lineage of living spiritual guidance. |
| does not have God | θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει | ”does not have God” | A strong idiom denying any genuine relationship with God | does not have God, is without God, has no relationship with God | Departure from Christ’s teaching severs, not merely weakens, one’s relationship with God — a strong, non-negotiable claim | তেংবাং মপু লৈতে (Tengban Mapu leite, “does not have/is without God”) | Critical. This claim must not be softened; the baseline’s DOCTRINAL PRESERVATION RULES require preserving strong doctrinal statements without qualification. তেংবাং মপু reused exactly per baseline. |
| Father…Son | τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν | ”the Father and the Son” | Both persons of the Godhead, held together — genuine knowledge of the Father is inseparable from right belief about the Son | the Father and the Son | Right doctrine about Christ (the Son) is inseparable from genuine relationship with God (the Father) | ইপা…তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা — reused exactly from baseline | Critical (per baseline). Both terms reused unchanged. |
2 John 1:10
Greek: εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει, μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν καὶ χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε· Gloss: “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not say ‘greetings’ to him.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| comes to you | ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς | ”comes/arrives to you” | A traveling teacher arriving, likely seeking hospitality per the itinerant-teacher custom of the early church | comes to you, arrives, visits | The practical situation the letter addresses: itinerant teachers seeking a base of support and legitimation via hospitality | মৈবাক্তা লাক্লি (makhaakta lakli / আপনাদা লাক্লি) | Low. Straightforward narrative verb; no doctrinal risk beyond consistency. |
| does not bring this teaching | ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει | ”does not carry/bring this teaching” | Failing to hold or transmit the true apostolic doctrine about Christ | does not bring/hold this teaching, does not teach this doctrine | The visible doctrinal test for withholding hospitality — denial of Christ’s incarnation specifically (linking back to v.7) | তম্বিবা অসি পুরক্তে (tambiba asi purakte) | High. Same term as v.9’s ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা; consistency required. The test is specifically doctrinal (denial of the incarnation), not general disagreeableness or ethnic/social difference — an important clarification given Manipur’s contemporary inter-community sensitivities (cf. baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel caution). |
| do not receive into house | μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν | ”do not take/receive him into the house” | Refusal of formal hospitality/lodging, which in the ancient church context functioned as public endorsement of a traveling teacher’s ministry | do not receive him into your house, do not welcome him into your home, do not take him in | Withholding the formal, legitimizing hospitality reserved for genuine teachers — this is about doctrinal endorsement, not general kindness to strangers in need | য়ুমদা লৌরদবা (yumda lourdaba, “do not receive/take into the house”) | High. Meitei culture places strong customary weight on guest-honor and hospitality norms; this verse must be carefully framed as refusing a specific act of formal doctrinal endorsement (hosting/sponsoring a traveling teacher’s ministry), not as license for general inhospitality, which would contradict broader biblical and cultural hospitality values. Native speaker and theologian review both recommended. |
| do not say “greetings” | χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε | ”do not say to him, ‘Rejoice!’” (standard Greek epistolary/verbal greeting formula) | A formulaic salutation of welcome and blessing, functioning here as a further mark of public endorsement | do not greet him, do not wish him well, do not say “God bless you,” give him no greeting | Withholding even the ordinary greeting formula as a symbolic refusal to bless or endorse the false teacher’s mission | খুরুমজরি নংদা মহাক্কী মফমদা তুংশিন্না তম্মু নত্তে (a rendering conveying “do not extend the customary greeting/blessing to him”) | Medium. খুরুমজরি (khurumjari) is a socially mandatory Meitei politeness form; withholding it is a serious, doctrinally-loaded act in Meitei social context — this actually strengthens rather than weakens the force of the passage, but translators must make explicit that this is a doctrinal, not merely social, refusal, since ordinary Meitei etiquette would treat withheld greeting as a serious insult. |
2 John 1:11
Greek: ὁ λέγων γὰρ αὐτῷ χαίρειν κοινωνεῖ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ τοῖς πονηροῖς. Gloss: “For the one who says ‘greetings’ to him shares in his evil works.”
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| shares/participates | κοινωνεῖ (koinōnei), root κοινωνέω/κοινωνία | ”has fellowship with, shares/participates in” | Same root as positive Christian “fellowship” elsewhere; here used in a strongly negative sense | shares in, participates in, is a partner in | Extending hospitality/endorsement to a denier of the incarnation makes one a partner in that person’s wrongdoing — fellowship-language used as warning, not blessing | লোইনবা (loinaba) — reused root from baseline “fellowship” | Medium — context-critical. লোইনবা is fixed in the baseline as Low-risk positive “fellowship” (shared participation in Christ). Its reuse here in an explicitly negative sense (sharing in evil works) requires a clear contextual flag so learners do not associate the word itself with wrongdoing generally; the doctrinal point is that ordinary fellowship-language cuts both ways depending on with whom one shares. |
| evil works | τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῖς τοῖς πονηροῖς | ”his evil/wicked works” | Deeds characterized by moral wickedness, specifically here the deceiver’s doctrinal deception and its effects | evil deeds, wicked works | The concrete consequence of denying Christ’s incarnation is itself framed as morally evil action, not neutral theological error | থবক ফত্তবা (thabak phattaba) | Low. ফত্তবা (phattaba, “bad/evil”) is standard vocabulary; principal risk is ensuring থবক (works/deeds) here is read as morally freighted, distinct from its neutral use in v.8 (“what we have worked for”). |
Section B — Full Book Coverage: 2 John 1:1–3 and 1:12–13 (Remaining Verses, Same Single Chapter)
These verses fall outside the core passage (1:4–11) but complete full-book coverage of the letter’s one chapter.
2 John 1:1–2
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| the elder | Ὁ πρεσβύτερος (ho presbyteros) | “the elder/older one” | A title of pastoral/apostolic authority in the early church, distinct from mere age | the elder, the presbyter | The author’s self-designation, carrying recognized apostolic-pastoral authority over multiple congregations | কলিসিয়াগী অহল (kalisiyagi ahal, “elder of the church”) | Medium — new registry entry. Must be distinguished from a general village or clan (yumnak) elder, a significant traditional Meitei social-authority role, and from a traditional ritual elder overseeing Umang Lai worship or Lai Haraoba proceedings; this title designates recognized apostolic/pastoral church authority specifically. |
| elect lady | ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ (eklektē kyria) | “chosen/elect lady” | Either a specific respected woman or, plausibly, a personification of a local congregation as a corporate “lady” | elect lady, chosen lady, the elect lady, “the Lady” (personified church) | Addressee(s) of the letter, described first by God’s gracious choosing before any social status | তেংবাং মপুনা খনবা ইকায়খুম্লবা নুপী (Tengban Mapuna khanba ikayakhumlaba nupi) | High. ἐκλεκτός (elect/chosen) here reuses the same root as the baseline’s abstract election doctrine (তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা), applied to a person; must convey God’s gracious personal choosing (echoing corporate election), not mere social rank/nobility, and must avoid any resonance with the Meitei royal-divine-lineage selection tradition (the historic Pakhangba-descent claim of Meitei kingship) or, per v.5’s note, with লেইমা/Leimarel goddess associations. |
| whom I love in truth | οὺς ἐγὼ ἀγαπῶ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ | ”whom I love in truth” | Genuine, sincere love, grounded in and consistent with shared doctrinal truth | whom I love in truth, whom I truly love | Love and truth named together as inseparable from the letter’s opening line — the theme stated before it is developed | নুংশিবা…অচুম্বাদা (nungshiba…achumbada) | High. Same terms as vv.4-6; establishes the letter’s programmatic pairing of love and truth from its very first sentence. |
| all who have come to know the truth | πάντες οἱ ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν | ”all who have known the truth” | Settled, possessed knowledge (perfect tense: a completed action with ongoing effect) of doctrinal truth about Christ | all who know the truth, all who have come to know the truth | The community of true believers is defined by shared, settled knowledge of the truth, not private opinion | অচুম্বা খংলবা মীওই পুম্নমক (achumba khanglaba miwoi pumnamak) | Medium. খংবা (khangba, “to know”) is standard; the perfect-tense nuance (settled, possessed knowledge, not ongoing uncertainty) should be preserved in phrasing rather than implying tentative or partial understanding. |
| abiding in us…forever | τὴν μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν…εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα | ”remaining in us…into the age/forever” | Permanent, unending residence/possession of truth in the believing community | abiding in us forever, remaining with us forever | Truth is not a temporary possession but a permanent inheritance of the believing community — grounds the letter’s confident, non-negotiable tone | লৈথিবা (leithiba)…মতম পুম্নমক্তা (matam pumnamakta, “for all time/forever”) | Medium — flag for confirmation. Same abiding-verb as v.9 (consistency required); “forever” phrase proposed provisionally and should be checked against an existing printed Manipuri Bible rendering of αἰών elsewhere (e.g., in Gospel/Epistle “eternal life” passages) before finalization. |
2 John 1:3
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| grace | χάρις (charis) | “favor freely given” | Unmerited favor | grace | Unmerited divine favor granted to believers, sourced in both Father and Son | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং — reused exactly from baseline | Critical (per baseline). Reuse unchanged; distinguish from bhakti-responsive কৃপা. |
| mercy | ἔλεος (eleos) | “compassion toward the suffering/wretched” | Compassionate pity, especially toward those in a condition of need or distress; distinct in nuance from χάρις’s “unearned favor” | mercy, compassion | God’s compassionate response to human need and weakness, given alongside (not instead of) grace | নিংবারী (ningbari) — new registry entry | Medium. Distinct from grace (unmerited favor toward the guilty) — mercy specifically emphasizes compassion toward suffering/misery. No settled Manipuri Christian precedent found; recommend confirming নিংবারী against current printed Manipuri Bible before finalizing, and clearly distinguishing from grace in teaching materials so the two are not treated as synonyms. |
| peace | εἰρήνη (eirēnē) | “peace, well-being” | Relational, covenantal peace with God | peace | Peace with God as a triune-sourced greeting-blessing, alongside grace and mercy | ইনগবা — reused exactly from baseline | Medium (per baseline). Reuse unchanged; distinguish from bhakti calm or Umang Lai ritual harmony. |
| God the Father…Jesus Christ the Son of the Father | παρὰ θεοῦ πατρός, καὶ παρὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός | ”from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father” | Both Father and Son named as co-equal sources of grace, mercy, and peace | God the Father…Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father | A high, explicit statement of the Son’s deity and equal status as source of divine blessing alongside the Father — directly relevant to the Sonship/Deity of Christ doctrines | তেংবাং মপু ইপা…জিসু ক্রিস্তো, ইপাগী মচানুপা — all reused exactly from baseline | Critical (per baseline, deity_of_christ / sonship_of_christ doctrines). All four terms (God, Father, Jesus, Christ/Son-of-God phrase) reused unchanged. |
| truth and love | ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ | ”in truth and love” | The relational-doctrinal sphere in which grace, mercy, and peace operate | in truth and love | Closes the greeting by restating the letter’s programmatic pairing, anchoring the whole epistle’s ethical vision | অচুম্বা অমসুং নুংশিবগী মফমদা (achumba amasung nungshibagi mafamda) | High. Same terms as above; this is the third occurrence of the truth-love pairing in three verses, underscoring its structural importance for the “Walking in Truth and Love” doctrine. |
2 John 1:12
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| paper and ink | διὰ χάρτου καὶ μέλανος | ”through paper and ink” | Literal ancient writing materials (papyrus sheet and carbon-based ink) | paper and ink, pen and paper | A purely practical, cultural detail; no doctrinal content | চাদর অমসুং মে (chadar amasung me) | Low. Cultural/historical detail only; no theological weight, but a brief cultural note may help readers unfamiliar with ancient letter-writing conventions. |
| face to face / mouth to mouth | στόμα πρὸς στόμα (stoma pros stoma) | “mouth to mouth” | Greek idiom for direct, in-person, unmediated conversation | face to face, in person, mouth to mouth | The elder prefers unmediated personal fellowship over written correspondence for matters requiring nuance and warmth | মমাংদা মমাংদা (mamangda mamangda, “face to face”) | Low. Idiom-handling case per baseline instructions: render the natural Manipuri equivalent (“face to face”) rather than the literal “mouth to mouth,” which would sound unnatural and mildly comic in Manipuri. |
| joy…complete/fulfilled | ἡ χαρὰ ἡμῶν πεπληρωμένη ᾗ | ”our joy might be made full/complete” | Joy brought to its full, intended measure through realized fellowship | that our joy may be complete/full | Relational, realized joy anticipated at future face-to-face fellowship — echoes v.4’s opening joy, bracketing the letter | নুংঙাইবা মপুংফাবা ওইনবা (nungngaiba mapungphaba oinaba) | High. Same reasoning as v.4: use নুংঙাইবা, never হরাওবা, to avoid the Lai Haraoba festival-name collision. This bracketing repetition (joy at v.4, joy at v.12) makes consistent rendering especially important for this short letter. |
2 John 1:13
Greek: Ἀσπάζεταί σε τὰ τέκνα τῆς ἐκλεκτῆς σου ἀδελφῆς.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering | Risk & Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| greets | Ἀσπάζεταί (aspazetai), root ἀσπάζομαι | ”greets, sends greetings” | Standard epistolary closing greeting formula | greets, sends greetings | Closing fellowship greeting, distinct in force from the withheld χαίρειν greeting of v.10 (that one was a doctrinal refusal; this one is warm, ordinary fellowship) | খুরুমই (khurumei) | Low. Standard closing greeting; contrast with v.10’s withheld greeting should be noted for teaching purposes (same custom, opposite doctrinal function) but carries no independent syncretism risk itself. |
| elect | τῆς ἐκλεκτῆς (tēs eklektēs) | “of the elect/chosen [sister]“ | See v.1 note on ἐκλεκτός | elect, chosen | A second occurrence of election-language applied to an individual, bracketing the letter (vv.1, 13) with the same doctrinal theme | খনবা (khanba) | High. Same rationale as v.1; consistency required across both occurrences. |
| sister | τῆς…ἀδελφῆς (tēs…adelphēs) | “sister” | Either a literal biological/family sister of the “elect lady,” or a fellow-believer described in familial terms | sister, your sister | Familial-spiritual kinship language for a fellow believer or literal relative | ইচেল (ichel) | Low. Standard kinship term; context-sensitive between literal and spiritual-familial sense, parallel to the τέκνα (children) ambiguity in v.1 and v.4. |
End of full-book coverage. 2 John’s single chapter (13 verses) has been treated in its entirety: Section A covers the core passage (1:4–11) verse-by-verse; Section B covers the remaining verses (1:1–3, 1:12–13). No chapter of this book contributes zero new terms — 2 John’s brevity means nearly every verse is doctrinally load-bearing.
