Executive Summary
01 Executive Summary — Gospel of John → Manipuri
Why it matters
The Manipuri (Meiteilon) Bible study translation pipeline is extending from Romans to John, and John raises the stakes: this Gospel carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier Christological and pneumatological doctrine yet analyzed for this language pair, anchored in a core passage (John 3:1-21, Nicodemus and the New Birth) that alone touches 12 of the curriculum’s 44 registered doctrines. Manipur’s Meitei audience approaches this material from two live, currently practiced non-Christian traditions — Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai, Lai Haraoba’s maibi trance-priestesses) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion, avatara theology, the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila) — not a single Hindu-majority backdrop with an animist footnote. John’s own vocabulary of heavenly descent, “lifting up,” and the seven declarative “I Am” statements sits closer to avatara theology’s literal meaning (“descent”) than anything in the Romans baseline required, and John 3:14’s bronze-serpent typology collides directly with Pakhangba, the positively venerated ancestral serpent-deity of Sanamahi cosmology — a risk with no parallel anywhere in the Romans package.
Key findings
- 44 doctrines registered across all 21 chapters of John (
doctrine_risk_registry.json): 23 Critical, 18 High, 3 Medium, 0 Low — meaning 41 of 44 doctrines (93%) require human theologian review, and the remaining 3 require native speaker review; John introduces zero automated-only doctrines, a materially higher review burden than the Romans baseline. - 80 terms registered in the John-extended
bible_term_registry.json: 35 Critical, 29 High, 15 Medium, 1 Low — 64 terms (80%) fall in the Critical/High tier requiring theologian-level scrutiny. - 25 terms are inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (God, Jesus, Lord, Son of God, Holy Spirit, Father, grace, salvation, resurrection, incarnation, etc.); 57 new terms are introduced by John’s own vocabulary, all newly seeded into
assets/translation_memory.json(v1) for this curriculum. - The core passage alone (John 3:1-21) anchors 12 doctrines, 8 of them Critical — the single densest doctrinal concentration identified in either curriculum to date.
- A distinct new risk cluster — the Son’s heavenly descent, being “lifted up,” and the seven “I Am” statements — spans chapters 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, and 18 and must be taught as one connected teaching unit, not isolated verses.
Risks
- Serpent typology (John 3:14) is the single most Manipuri-specific risk surveyed to date: Pakhangba, Sanamahi’s ancestral serpent-deity and royal-lineage marker, is positively venerated, while Numbers 21’s bronze serpent is a judgment-image with the opposite valence. No cultural bridge exists; only dedicated, non-optional translator training closes this gap.
- Avatara collision (descend/ascend from heaven, chs. 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18): Sanskrit avatara literally means “descent,” and Krishna’s periodic “coming down,” celebrated in the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila, is a live, prestigious devotional practice, not a historical footnote.
- New birth vs. পুনর্জন্ম (John 3:3-8): the nearest lexical neighbor to “born again” is rebirth/reincarnation vocabulary shared by both traditions; this is the curriculum’s own core passage, making it the highest-exposure risk in the whole project.
- Holy Spirit as Counselor vs. maibi trance-mediation (chs. 14-16): bare থাওয়াই risks activating Sanamahi’s populated ancestral/nature-spirit world; the compound must never drop অসেংবা.
- Agapē love vs. Ras Lila prema (3:16; 13:34-35; 15:9-13; 17:23-26): judged equal in weight to the Romans baseline’s grace/bhakti collision, but the shared native word for love makes this risk harder to fence than grace was.
- Absolute “I Am” (8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6,8): a purely grammatical gap — Manipuri has no unmarked emphatic construction echoing Exodus 3:14 — meaning the deity-claim can silently disappear without a mandatory translator’s note at every occurrence.
- Heaven (স্বর্গ) and wrath of God (অসাউবা) are both PROVISIONAL, unresolved collision points with no clean native alternative, requiring recurring translator apparatus rather than a one-time lexical fix.
Opportunities
- Nicodemus’s own confusion (John 3:4) offers a built-in, textually native teaching hook for the ἄνωθεν (“again”/“from above”) double sense — the curriculum can dramatize the very ambiguity a flat rendering would erase.
- John’s own in-text glosses (1:41 “Messiah…which means Christ”; 1:38 “Rabbi…which means Teacher”) model exactly the kind of explicit term-explanation this curriculum needs and can be highlighted as a translation methodology precedent from within Scripture itself.
- The high concentration of Critical doctrine in John 1, 3, 8, 10, 14, and 20 allows Phase 2/3 materials to sequence the descent/avatara collision cluster, the serpent typology, and the love/prema collision as three connected, reusable teaching units rather than scattering them across unrelated lessons.
- John 20:31’s purpose statement (“that you may believe…and have life in his name”) gives this curriculum a thesis-level anchor verse parallel in weight to Romans 1:16-17, strengthening cross-curriculum consistency planning.
Recommended actions
- Route all 41 theologian-required doctrines and 64 Critical/High terms through human theologian review before any Phase 2 segment is marked approved; do not allow Medium-tier review routing to substitute.
- Commission dedicated (not merely footnoted) translator training on the Numbers 21 / Pakhangba serpent-typology collision before translating any segment touching John 3:14.
- Confirm all PROVISIONAL renderings (Word/Logos, heaven, descend/ascend from heaven, new birth, light, wrath of God, Counselor, Lamb of God, good shepherd, true vine, it is finished, overcome the world, sign, darkness) with a Manipuri-speaking theologian before Phase 2 deployment, exactly as the baseline required for covenant, fellowship, and imputed_righteousness.
- Enforce the mandatory (not optional) translator’s-note requirements at every occurrence of the absolute “I Am,” new birth, the bronze serpent, and descend/ascend-from-heaven language, per
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Fix cross-document-consistent renderings for John 3:16, 8:58, 10:30 (paired with 14:28), 14:6, 17:3, 20:28, and 20:31 now, before parallel Phase 2 processing begins, to prevent divergent renderings across curriculum files.
