Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 2 John | English → Manipuri
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the entire book of 2 John (one chapter, 13 verses), extending the Romans baseline’s doctrine-risk methodology to this curriculum. It is generated in lockstep with doctrine_risk_registry.json (already produced for this curriculum): every doctrine name, risk tier, and review-routing assignment below is identical to that registry. This file adds the supporting-passage detail, translation-risk reasoning, and full-chapter coverage confirmation required by Phase 1 Step 4; it does not introduce, rename, or re-tier any doctrine.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly:
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient. (No doctrine in 2 John is assigned Low risk; the book’s density of Christological and ecclesial content keeps every identified doctrine at Medium or above.)
1. Full-Chapter Coverage Confirmation
2 John has a single chapter. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, every verse of that one chapter is accounted for below — no verse is silently passed over, and the letter’s short length means the “chapter” and the “book” coincide exactly.
| Verse Range | Section | Doctrines Active in This Section | Coverage Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1-3 | Greeting: sender, addressee, election, truth, grace-mercy-peace | Election of Believers; Corporate Permanence of Truth in the Community; Trinitarian Source of Grace, Mercy, and Peace; Deity and Sonship of Christ (implicit in “Son of the Father”) | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:4 | Joy at children walking in truth | Joy in Christian Fellowship; Walking in Truth and Love | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:5-6 | The command to love one another; love defined as obedience | Walking in Truth and Love; The Apostolic Commandment to Love | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:7 | Warning: deceivers deny Christ’s coming in the flesh; the antichrist | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Antichrist and the Denial of Christ’s True Nature | Reviewed — load-bearing (doctrinal center of the book) |
| 1:8 | Watch yourselves; do not lose a full reward | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ; Reward for Faithful Perseverance | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:9 | Abiding vs. going ahead; possessing the Father and the Son | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ; Deity and Sonship of Christ | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:10-11 | Hospitality test: do not receive or greet false teachers | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Hospitality Greeting Customs as Doctrinal Signal | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:12 | Desire for face-to-face fellowship; joy made complete | Joy in Christian Fellowship | Reviewed — load-bearing |
| 1:13 | Closing greeting from “the children of your elect sister” | Election of Believers; Hospitality Greeting Customs as Doctrinal Signal | Reviewed — load-bearing |
Conclusion: No section of 2 John is doctrine-neutral. Because the letter is a single tightly-argued pastoral unit, all 13 verses contribute to at least one of the 13 doctrines catalogued below; there is no chapter or section to flag as “reviewed, no new terms.”
2. Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Manipuri Doctrine Name | Key Terms | Supporting Passages (2 John) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Walking in Truth and Love | High | অচুম্বা অমসুং নুংশিবগী মফমদা চৎপা | truth, love, walking, commandment | 1:1, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6 | অচুম্বা (truth) must be kept distinct from Sanskrit-derived সত্য, tied in Meitei religious memory to Vaishnava Satya Yuga cosmology, so that truth reads as Christ-centered rather than as a marker of a cyclical cosmic epoch. নুংশিবা (love) must be kept distinct from প্রেম, the term carrying strong Krishna-Radha devotional-romantic association through the living, UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila tradition, so believer-to-believer love is not heard as devotional-romantic love. Both terms recur three times in the letter’s first six verses; any inconsistency across those occurrences would be immediately noticeable to a careful reader and must be avoided. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The Apostolic Commandment to Love | High | নুংশিনবগী য়াথাং | commandment, new commandment, from the beginning, love one another | 1:5, 1:6 | য়াথাং is the identical lexeme the Romans baseline fixed for the Mosaic Law/Torah. Reusing it here without a translator note risks readers importing Romans’ Torah-fulfillment argument into 2 John, where the referent is the apostolic love-command received “from the beginning” of Christian teaching, not the Sinai law-code. The verse’s own negation (“not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning”) must be rendered so it cannot be misread as admitting the command is a late innovation. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | Critical | মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা য়াদবা অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওইশিংদা চেকসিন্নবা | deceiver, confess, Jesus Christ coming in flesh, incarnation, world | 1:7 | CRITICAL — this is the doctrinal center of the book and must reuse the Romans baseline’s incarnation term (মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা) unchanged, with the forbidden-substitution rule enforced absolutely: NEVER অবতার. Because Manipuri Vaishnavism’s living Ras Lila tradition celebrates Krishna’s repeated avatar-descents as prestigious, actively performed religious identity (not a distant abstraction), this verse’s warning must be taught as targeting denial of a real, permanent, one-time assumption of genuine human flesh — not denial of a temporary or repeatable divine appearance of the kind enacted in devotional dance. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Antichrist and the Denial of Christ’s True Nature | Critical | ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা (এণ্টিক্রিস্তো) | antichrist, deceiver | 1:7 | CRITICAL — must be explicitly distinguished, at every occurrence, from the Vaishnava eschatological expectation of Kalki, Vishnu’s final avatar awaited at the close of the current age (Kali Yuga) to destroy evil and renew the world. A thin gloss of “antichrist” as merely “an opponent of Christ” risks Meitei Vaishnava readers assimilating the figure into an expected-final-avatar framework rather than recognizing 2 John’s specific claim: the antichrist is a denier of Christ’s real incarnation, not a rival or future redeemer-avatar within an ongoing cycle. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | High | ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবাদা লৈথিবা | abide, teaching of Christ, goes ahead, does not have God, watch yourselves | 1:8, 1:9 | লৈথিবা (“abide/remain”) occurs three times in v.9 alone and carries the doctrinal weight of the passage; it must convey settled, continuous relationship with Christ’s teaching, not a temporary stay, and must not resonate with a household deity or ancestral spirit “remaining” resident in a home shrine, a live category in Sanamahi household religion. হেন্না চৎপা (“goes ahead”) must be framed specifically as doctrinal overreach — claiming advanced spiritual insight while abandoning core teaching about the incarnation — not general disobedience. তেংবাং মপু লৈতে (“does not have God”) is a maximally strong claim and must not be softened, per the baseline’s doctrinal-preservation rules. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | High | থাগৎপা অমসুং তম্বিবা য়েংসিনবা | receive into house, greeting formula, shares in evil works, does not bring this teaching | 1:10, 1:11 | Meitei culture places strong customary weight on guest-honor and the মামাংদা খুরুমজরি greeting form; withholding formal hospitality/greeting from a denier of the incarnation must be explicitly taught as a doctrinal refusal (withholding formal ministry-endorsement from a specific false teacher), not as license for general inhospitality toward strangers or an ethnically-coded exclusion — a distinction of real pastoral importance given contemporary inter-community sensitivities in Manipur. The test named is specifically doctrinal (denial of Christ’s incarnation), not general disagreeableness or social preference. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Reward for Faithful Perseverance | Medium | লৈথিবগী থবকী মানুং | lose, worked for, full reward | 1:8 | The reward in view is for faithful perseverance in ministry/discipleship, not salvation itself, and must not be blurred with the baseline’s fixed unmerited-grace vocabulary (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং) nor with Vaishnava সেবা (devotional service performed to build bhakti standing with Krishna). No settled printed-Bible precedent for “full reward” was found in current Manipuri Christian literature; the provisional compound থবকী মানুং requires native-speaker confirmation before wide deployment. | Native speaker review |
| 8 | Election of Believers | High | তেংবাং মপুনা খনবা মীওইশিং | elect lady, elect sister, elect | 1:1, 1:13 | Reuses the root of the Romans baseline’s corporate election doctrine (তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা) but applies it here to individual women, bracketing the letter at vv.1 and 13. Must convey God’s gracious, personal choosing rather than social rank, and must avoid resonance with either the historic Meitei royal-divine-lineage selection tradition (the Pakhangba-descent claim of Meitei kingship) or, since the address is to a woman, with লেইমা/Leimarel Sidabi Sanamahi goddess associations. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Deity and Sonship of Christ | Critical | ক্রিস্তোগী তেংবাং মপু অমসুং মচানুপা ওইবা | Son of God, Father and Son, Jesus Christ the Son of the Father | 1:3, 1:9 | CRITICAL — 1:3 explicitly names Jesus Christ as co-equal source of grace, mercy, and peace alongside the Father, and 1:9 makes possessing the Son inseparable from possessing the Father. Both claims must reuse the Romans baseline’s Critical-tier rendering unchanged (তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা) and must never be softened into “a great avatar” or “a favored spirit within the Umang Lai pantheon.” | Human theologian |
| 10 | Trinitarian Source of Grace, Mercy, and Peace | Critical | ইপা অমসুং মচানুপাদগী মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং, নিংবারী, ইনগবা | grace, mercy, peace, God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son | 1:3 | The greeting names grace and peace using the Romans baseline’s fixed Critical/Medium-risk terms, plus newly introduced “mercy” (নিংবারী, no settled precedent — confirm before deployment). Grace must never collapse into কৃপা, Krishna’s bhakti-responsive favor toward a devoted follower; peace must never collapse into devotional calm or Umang Lai ritual harmony. That all three gifts are sourced jointly “from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father” is itself a high Christological claim requiring careful, unqualified rendering — this is not a routine epistolary greeting formula. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Joy in Christian Fellowship | Medium | ক্রিস্তান লোইনবাগী নুংঙাইবা | rejoiced, joy, face to face | 1:4, 1:12 | নুংঙাইবা must be used consistently at both bracketing occurrences (v.4 and v.12) and must never be rendered হরাওবা, the ordinary Manipuri word for festive rejoicing that is also the root of Lai Haraoba, the major Sanamahi forest-deity festival name; substituting হরাওবা would risk directly evoking that festival within a doctrinally loaded pastoral-joy context. | Native speaker review |
| 12 | Corporate Permanence of Truth in the Community | Medium | মীওই পুম্নমক্কী মনুংদা লৈথিবা অচুম্বা | all who have come to know the truth, abiding in us forever | 1:1, 1:2 | Truth’s settled, completed possession (perfect-tense খংবা) and its permanent residence “forever” (মতম পুম্নমক্তা) ground the letter’s confident, non-negotiable opening tone; phrasing must avoid implying tentative or partial understanding of the truth, and “forever” must be checked against existing “eternal life” renderings rather than left as an untested provisional compound. | Native speaker review |
| 13 | Hospitality Greeting Customs as Doctrinal Signal | Medium | খুরুমজরি য়াদবগী তম্বিবাগী মরি | greeting formula, khurumjari, does not bring this teaching | 1:10, 1:11, 1:13 | খুরুমজরি is a socially mandatory Meitei politeness form; withholding it (vv.10-11) is a serious act in Meitei social context and must be explicitly taught as a doctrinal refusal rather than ordinary rudeness, while the warm closing greeting of v.13 (same custom root) must be understood as functioning in the opposite, affirming direction — same custom, opposite doctrinal signal, and this contrast should be made explicit in teaching notes. | Native speaker review |
3. Risk Summary (Matches doctrine_risk_registry.json)
| Risk Tier | Doctrines at This Tier | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Antichrist and the Denial of Christ’s True Nature; Deity and Sonship of Christ; Trinitarian Source of Grace, Mercy, and Peace | Human theologian — every occurrence |
| High | Walking in Truth and Love; The Apostolic Commandment to Love; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Election of Believers | Human theologian |
| Medium | Reward for Faithful Perseverance; Joy in Christian Fellowship; Corporate Permanence of Truth in the Community; Hospitality Greeting Customs as Doctrinal Signal | Native speaker review |
| Low | (none) | — |
Totals: 4 Critical, 5 High, 4 Medium doctrines identified across 2 John’s single chapter — 9 doctrines requiring human theologian review, 4 requiring native speaker review, 0 requiring automated-only review. These figures and every doctrine name/tier above are drawn directly from, and remain fully consistent with, the accompanying doctrine_risk_registry.json.
4. Cross-Cutting Observations for Phase 2 Planning
- Highest-density risk verse: 1:7 alone carries two Critical doctrines (Incarnation-denial, Antichrist) and touches a third (Deity and Sonship of Christ, by implication). Any Phase 2 segment containing 1:7 must be routed to human theologian review without exception, per the escalation rules already established in the Romans baseline’s
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Bracketing structure: Election (v.1, v.13) and Joy (v.4, v.12) both bracket the letter; translation memory must enforce identical renderings at both occurrences of each term to preserve the letter’s literary symmetry for Manipuri readers.
- New collision risks beyond the Romans baseline: the Antichrist/Kalki-avatar collision (1:7) and the নুংঙাইবা/হরাওবা–Lai Haraoba collision (1:4, 1:12) are specific to this curriculum and have no counterpart entry in the Romans-era forbidden-substitution list; both must be added to an updated forbidden-substitution list before Phase 2 begins.
- Term reuse discipline: য়াথাং (commandment) and খনবা (elect/election) both reuse baseline lexemes in a distinct sense from their Romans usage (Mosaic Law; corporate election of the church, respectively). Every segment using either term in 2 John must carry a translator note clarifying the in-context sense, consistent with the Glossary Enforcement Priority Order already defined for this Language Package.
This document extends, and must be read together with, 08_core_glossary.md and doctrine_risk_registry.json for this curriculum. It is intended for merge into the updated translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in a subsequent Phase 1 step, and to be loaded as part of the Phase 2 pre-flight checklist alongside the Romans baseline’s 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Manipuri name: মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা য়াদবা অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওইশিংদা চেকসিন্নবা
Key terms: deceiver, confess, Jesus Christ coming in flesh, incarnation, world
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: this is 2 John’s doctrinal center and must reuse the Romans baseline’s incarnation rendering (মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা) exactly, with the forbidden-substitution rule enforced without exception — NEVER অবতার. Because Manipuri Vaishnavism’s living Ras Lila tradition celebrates Krishna’s repeated avatar-descents as prestigious, actively performed religious identity, this verse’s denial-of-the-incarnation warning must be taught as targeting the denial of a real, permanent, one-time assumption of genuine human flesh, not a temporary or repeatable divine appearance of the kind devotionally enacted in dance.
Antichrist and the Denial of Christ’s True Nature
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা (এণ্টিক্রিস্তো)
Key terms: antichrist, deceiver
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: must be explicitly distinguished, in every occurrence, from the Vaishnava eschatological expectation of Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu awaited at the end of the current age (Kali Yuga) to destroy evil and renew the world. Presenting ‘antichrist’ as merely an ‘opponent of Christ’ risks Meitei Vaishnava readers assimilating the figure into an expected-final-avatar framework; 2 John’s antichrist is specifically a denier of Christ’s real incarnation, not a rival redeemer-avatar within an ongoing cycle.
Deity and Sonship of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী তেংবাং মপু অমসুং মচানুপা ওইবা
Key terms: Son of God, Father and Son, Jesus Christ the Son of the Father
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 1:3 explicitly names Jesus Christ as co-equal source of grace, mercy, and peace alongside the Father, and 1:9 makes possessing the Son inseparable from possessing the Father. Both claims must reuse the Romans baseline’s Critical-tier renderings unchanged (তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা) and must not be softened into ‘a great avatar’ or ‘a favored spirit within the Umang Lai pantheon.‘
Trinitarian Source of Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Manipuri name: ইপা অমসুং মচানুপাদগী মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং, নিংবারী, ইনগবা
Key terms: grace, mercy, peace, God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s greeting names grace and peace with the Romans baseline’s fixed Critical/Medium-risk terms, plus a newly introduced ‘mercy’ (নিংবারী, no settled precedent, confirm before deployment). Grace must never collapse into কৃপা, bhakti-responsive favor from Krishna to a devoted follower; peace must never collapse into devotional calm or Umang Lai ritual harmony. All three being sourced jointly ‘from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father’ is itself a high Christological claim requiring careful, unqualified rendering.
High Risk Doctrines
Walking in Truth and Love
Manipuri name: অচুম্বা অমসুং নুংশিবগী মফমদা চৎপা
Key terms: truth, love, walking, commandment
Review routing: Human theologian
Truth (অচুম্বা) must be distinguished from সত্য, the Sanskrit-derived term tied to Vaishnava Satya Yuga cosmology, so truth is heard as centered on Christ’s person, not a cyclical cosmic-order category. Love (নুংশিবা) must be distinguished from প্রেম, the term strongly associated with the Krishna-Radha devotional love celebrated in the living Ras Lila tradition, so believer-to-believer love is not read through a romantic-devotional frame. Both terms recur three times each within the letter’s first six verses, making cross-verse consistency doctrinally important.
The Apostolic Commandment to Love
Manipuri name: নুংশিনবগী য়াথাং
Key terms: commandment, new commandment, from the beginning, love one another
Review routing: Human theologian
য়াথাং is the same lexeme fixed in the Romans baseline for the Mosaic Law/Torah; a translator note must clarify that here it names the apostolic love-command received ‘from the beginning’ of the church’s teaching, not the Sinai law-code, to prevent readers importing Romans’ Torah-fulfillment discussion into a different context. The negation (‘not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning’) must be kept clear so learners do not read the love-command as a post-apostolic innovation.
Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবাদা লৈথিবা
Key terms: abide, teaching of Christ, goes ahead, does not have God, watch yourselves
Review routing: Human theologian
লৈথিবা (‘abide/remain’) is repeated three times in v.9 alone and is doctrinally load-bearing; it must convey settled, continuous relationship with Christ’s teaching, not a temporary stay, and must not be confused with a household deity or ancestral spirit ‘remaining’ resident in a home shrine, a live category in Sanamahi household religion. ‘Goes ahead’ (হেন্না চৎপা) must be framed as doctrinal overreach specifically — claiming advanced spiritual insight while abandoning core teaching about the incarnation — not general disobedience. ‘Does not have God’ (তেংবাং মপু লৈতে) is a strong claim that must not be softened per the baseline’s doctrinal preservation rules.
Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Manipuri name: থাগৎপা অমসুং তম্বিবা য়েংসিনবা
Key terms: receive into house, greeting formula, shares in evil works, does not bring this teaching
Review routing: Human theologian
Meitei culture places strong customary weight on guest-honor and the মামাংদা খুরুমজরি greeting; withholding formal hospitality/greeting from a denier of the incarnation must be taught explicitly as a doctrinal refusal (of formal ministry-endorsement), not a license for general inhospitality toward strangers or an ethnically-coded exclusion, given contemporary inter-community sensitivities in Manipur. The test named is specifically doctrinal (denial of Christ’s incarnation), not general disagreeableness.
Election of Believers
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুনা খনবা মীওইশিং
Key terms: elect lady, elect sister, elect
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the root of the Romans baseline’s corporate election doctrine (তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা) but here applied to individual women, bracketing the letter (vv.1, 13). Must convey God’s gracious personal choosing, not social rank, and must avoid resonance with either the historic Meitei royal-divine-lineage selection tradition (the Pakhangba-descent claim of Meitei kingship) or, given the address to a woman, with লেইমা/Leimarel Sidabi Sanamahi goddess associations.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Reward for Faithful Perseverance
Manipuri name: লৈথিবগী থবকী মানুং
Key terms: lose, worked for, full reward
Review routing: Native speaker review
The reward in view is for perseverance in ministry/discipleship, not salvation itself; must not be blurred with the baseline’s fixed unmerited-grace vocabulary (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং) nor with Vaishnava সেবা, devotional service performed to build bhakti standing. No settled printed-Bible precedent exists for ‘full reward’ in Manipuri; confirm before deployment.
Joy in Christian Fellowship
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তান লোইনবাগী নুংঙাইবা
Key terms: rejoiced, joy, face to face
Review routing: Native speaker review
নুংঙাইবা must be used consistently at both bracketing occurrences (v.4 and v.12) and never রেণ্ডার as হরাওবা, the ordinary Manipuri word for festive rejoicing that is also the root of Lai Haraoba, the major Sanamahi forest-deity festival name; substituting হরাওবা would risk evoking that festival directly in a doctrinally loaded pastoral-joy context.
Corporate Permanence of Truth in the Community
Manipuri name: মীওই পুম্নমক্কী মনুংদা লৈথিবা অচুম্বা
Key terms: all who have come to know the truth, abiding in us forever
Review routing: Native speaker review
Truth’s settled, completed possession (perfect-tense খংবা) and its permanent residence ‘forever’ (মতম পুম্নমক্তা) ground the letter’s confident, non-negotiable tone; phrasing must avoid implying tentative or partial understanding, and ‘forever’ must be checked against existing ‘eternal life’ renderings rather than left as an untested provisional compound.
Hospitality Greeting Customs as Doctrinal Signal
Manipuri name: খুরুমজরি য়াদবগী তম্বিবাগী মরি
Key terms: greeting formula, khurumjari, does not bring this teaching
Review routing: Native speaker review
খুরুমজরি is a socially mandatory Meitei politeness form; withholding it (v.10-11) is a serious act in Meitei social context that must be explicitly taught as a doctrinal refusal rather than ordinary rudeness, while the warm closing greeting of v.13 (খুরুমই, same custom) must be understood as functioning in the opposite, affirming direction — same custom, opposite doctrinal signal.
