07 — Semantic Analysis: Philemon (Koine Greek → Manipuri)
Curriculum: Philemon
Core passage: Philemon 1:8–21
Book structure note: Philemon consists of a single chapter of 25 verses. Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, this document treats the entire letter, first verse to last, organized into three sections: the Opening/Salutation (1:1–7), the Core Passage treated verse-by-verse (1:8–21), and the Closing (1:22–25). No verse is left unanalyzed. Every load-bearing theological or culturally sensitive term in every section is documented with the same field set used for the core passage.
Baseline dependency: This analysis assumes translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json from the Romans Language Package as the governing authority. Every term already recorded there (grace, faith, God, Lord, Father, Jesus, Christ/Messiah, church, saints, fellowship, thanksgiving, exhort, intercession, obedience of faith, peace, holy) is reused exactly and is marked “REUSED FROM BASELINE” below rather than re-derived. Only terms not already governed by the baseline receive new proposed renderings in this document, to be added to translation memory as new entries pending theologian confirmation per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Occasion note: Paul writes from prison, appealing to Philemon, a slave-owner and house-church host, on behalf of Onesimus, Philemon’s runaway slave who has become a believer and Paul’s own “child” in the faith. The letter’s Greek text repeatedly plays on Onesimus’s name (Ὀνήσιμος, “useful/profitable”) — this wordplay is a load-bearing rhetorical device, not decoration, and is flagged wherever it occurs.
PART 1 — Opening / Salutation (Philemon 1:1–7)
v.1 — Παῦλος δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφός, Φιλήμονι τῷ ἀγαπητῷ καὶ συνεργῷ ἡμῶν
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| δέσμιος | desmios | ”a bound one” | prisoner, captive, one in chains | ”prisoner” (ESV/NIV), “bondsman” (some renderings) | Paul’s self-identification is not shame but a badge of gospel identity — he writes not with apostolic title but as a chained man, which sets the letter’s tone of appeal rather than command. Foreshadows the δοῦλος wordplay in v.16. | বন্দী (bandi). Risk: High. New term. Must be kept visibly distinct from দাস (slave, see v.16) despite Paul’s intentional rhetorical echo between his own bonds and Onesimus’s bondage — conflating the two words in Manipuri would either flatten the wordplay or wrongly imply Paul was legally enslaved. Reason for High tier: this term anchors the “Intercession and Appeal” doctrine — Paul’s chosen posture of appeal-from-weakness rather than command-from-authority. |
| ἀδελφός | adelphos | ”brother” (from the same womb) | biological brother; fellow believer; spiritual kinsman | ”brother” (all major versions) | Timothy is named as a “brother” — establishing at the letter’s very opening the kinship-across-hierarchy theme that reaches its climax in v.16 when Onesimus, a slave, receives the same title. | ইচিল-ইনাউ (ichil-inao). Risk: High. New term. Meitei kinship vocabulary (ইচিল = elder sibling, ইনাউ = younger sibling) is tied concretely to yumnak (clan) lineage and real inheritance obligations; extending it to spiritual kinship — and later to a runaway slave — is a culturally radical claim that must be taught explicitly, not softened to a generic “friend/companion” term. Singular vocative usage (as in v.20) needs native-speaker confirmation. |
| ἀγαπητός | agapētos | ”beloved, dearly loved” | one who is the object of ἀγάπη-love; dear, esteemed | ”beloved” (KJV/ESV/NASB), “dear friend” (NIV) | Philemon is addressed with covenantal, self-giving love-language before Paul makes any request — establishing the relational, not transactional, basis for everything that follows. | নুংশিরাবা (nungshiraba, “one who is loved,” built on the root নুংশিবা, “to love”). Risk: Medium. New term. See ἀγάπη note below (v.5) for the fuller collision risk this root carries. |
| συνεργός | synergos | ”fellow worker, co-laborer” | ministry partner, colleague in gospel work | ”fellow worker” (ESV/NASB), “co-worker” (NIV) | Philemon is not merely a wealthy patron but a gospel co-laborer with Paul — this status is precisely what Paul later leverages in v.17 (“if you consider me a partner”). | থবক লোইনবা (thouba loinaba, “work-partner,” built on the baseline term লোইনবা for fellowship). Risk: Low. |
v.2 — καὶ Ἀπφίᾳ τῇ ἀδελφῇ, καὶ Ἀρχίππῳ τῷ συστρατιώτῃ ἡμῶν, καὶ τῇ κατ᾽ οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησίᾳ
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀδελφή | adelphē | ”sister” | biological sister; fellow female believer | ”sister” (all major versions) | Apphia (likely Philemon’s wife) is given full standing as a named addressee and spiritual kinswoman, not a silent household attachment. | ইচেল (ichel, tentative — “sister”). Risk: Medium. New term; provisional rendering following Meitei sibling-term convention parallel to ইচিল-ইনাউ above. Confirm exact naturalness for spiritual (non-blood) usage with a Manipuri-speaking theologian before wide deployment. |
| συστρατιώτης | systratiōtēs | ”fellow soldier” | comrade-in-arms; one who shares military hardship and struggle | ”fellow soldier” (ESV/NASB/NIV) | Archippus is cast as a comrade in the spiritual battle of gospel ministry — a metaphor of shared struggle, not literal warfare. | লান্মী লোইনবা (lanmi loinaba, “soldier-companion”). Risk: Low. Note: metaphorical solidarity in gospel labor, not literal militancy. |
| ἡ κατ᾽ οἶκόν ἐκκλησία | hē kat’ oikon ekklēsia | ”the assembly according to [the] house” | a local congregation meeting in a private home | ”the church that meets in your house” (NIV/ESV) | The church (κλησία — REUSED FROM BASELINE, কলিসিয়া) here meets in Philemon’s own home; this domestic setting is precisely where the drama of receiving Onesimus back “as a brother” will be publicly tested, in front of the very congregation Philemon hosts. | যুমদা লেপ্পা কলিসিয়া (yumda leppa kalisiya, “the church that meets/stands in the house,” built on the baseline term কলিসিয়া). Risk: Medium. Must be clearly distinguished from a fixed ritual worship-site — this is an early, pre-institutional house-gathering, not to be pictured on the model of a মন্দির (Vaishnava temple) or an Umang Lai sacred-grove worship site, per the baseline’s existing “church” guidance. |
v.3 — χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
All four terms — χάρις (grace), εἰρήνη (peace), θεός πατήρ (God the Father), κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός (Lord Jesus Christ) — are REUSED FROM BASELINE exactly: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (grace, Critical), ইনগবা (peace, Medium), তেংবাং মপু / ইপা (God/Father, Critical), মপু ইবুংগো / জিসু / ক্রিস্তো (Lord/Jesus/Christ, Critical). No new terms introduced.
v.4-5 — εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου πάντοτε, μνείαν σου ποιούμενος ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν μου, ἀκούων σου τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ τὴν πίστιν, ἣν ἔχεις πρὸς τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| εὐχαριστῶ | eucharistō | ”I give thanks” | gratitude expressed to God | ”I thank” (all major versions) | REUSED FROM BASELINE: থাগৎচরি (thagatchari), Low risk. | |
| προσευχή | proseuchē | ”prayer” | general prayer/petition to God | ”prayers” (all major versions) | The general noun for prayer, broader than the baseline’s “intercession” (praying specifically on behalf of another). | হায়জবা (haijaba — reusing the verb root already embedded inside the baseline’s intercession compound মখোয়গী মফমদা হায়জবা). Risk: Low. Must be kept distinct, per the baseline’s existing intercession note, from petitions traditionally carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi or maiba. |
| ἀγάπη | agapē | ”love” | self-giving, covenantal, other-directed love (distinct from ἔρως/romantic desire or φιλία/friendly affection) | “love” (all major versions) | Philemon’s ἀγάπη toward the saints is the relational soil out of which Paul’s whole appeal grows (cf. v.9, “for love’s sake I appeal”). This term governs the entire letter’s persuasive strategy. | নুংশিবা (nungshiba). Risk: High. New term — a notable gap in the baseline, which never defined a standalone term for ἀγάπη. Grounded collision risk: Manipuri Vaishnavism’s devotional life is substantially organized around prema-bhakti, the romantic, longing devotional love between Krishna and Radha enacted in the Ras Lila dance tradition (itself UNESCO-recognized and royally patronized since Bhagyachandra). নুংশিবা is also the ordinary Meitei word used in romantic and devotional song contexts. Philemon’s ἀγάπη — committed, self-giving covenantal love expressed in costly practical action (releasing/restoring a slave) — must be taught as categorically distinct from Krishna-Radha romantic-devotional love, not assumed to carry the same connotation by default. |
| πίστις | pistis | ”faith, trust” | REUSED FROM BASELINE: থাজবা (thajaba), High risk. Object here is “toward the Lord Jesus,” consistent with baseline’s requirement that faith’s object always be specified. | | | |
| ἅγιοι | hagioi | ”saints, holy ones” | REUSED FROM BASELINE: অসেংবা মীওই (asengba miwoi), High risk. | | | |
v.6 — ὅπως ἡ κοινωνία τῆς πίστεώς σου ἐνεργὴς γένηται ἐν ἐπιγνώσει παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ τοῦ ἐν ἡμῖν εἰς Χριστόν
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| κοινωνία τῆς πίστεως | koinōnia tēs pisteōs | ”partnership/fellowship of the faith” | shared participation in gospel work flowing from shared faith; more active/task-oriented than general social fellowship | ”partnership that comes from your faith” (NIV), “sharing of your faith” (ESV) | This is not passive camaraderie but active gospel partnership — the very partnership Paul will invoke in v.17 to ask Philemon to receive Onesimus “as a partner.” | থাজবগী লোইনবা (thajabagi loinaba, built from baseline’s থাজবা + লোইনবা). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from general social fellowship — this is specifically shared stake and labor in gospel ministry. |
| ἐνεργής | energēs | ”effective, active, operative” | working power that produces visible effect | ”effective” (ESV/NASB), “active” (some renderings) | Faith-partnership is meant to bear fruit in concrete action — precisely what Paul is about to ask Philemon to do regarding Onesimus. | পাংথোকপা (pangthokpa — reusing the পাংথোক root from baseline’s power_of_god compound তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা). Risk: Low. |
| ἐπίγνωσις | epignōsis | ”full/precise knowledge” | deepened, experiential knowledge (intensive form of γνῶσις) | “knowledge” (KJV), “full understanding” (NASB) | | মপুং ফাবা খংবা (mapung phaba khangba, “complete knowledge”). Risk: Low. |
| ἀγαθόν | agathon | ”good, good thing” | moral goodness, a good deed | ”every good thing” (ESV/NASB) | | অফবা (aphaba). Risk: Low. |
v.7 — χαρὰν γὰρ πολλὴν ἔσχον καὶ παράκλησιν ἐπὶ τῇ ἀγάπῃ σου, ὅτι τὰ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἁγίων ἀναπέπαυται διὰ σοῦ, ἀδελφέ
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| χαρά | chara | ”joy” | gladness, rejoicing | ”joy” (all major versions) | Paul’s joy is a direct fruit of Philemon’s love in action toward fellow believers — an emotional register the letter will return to at its climax (v.20, “let me benefit… refresh my heart”). | হরাওবা (haraoba). Risk: Medium. New term. Grounded collision note: হরাওবা is the ordinary Meitei word for “joy/rejoicing/merrymaking” and is also the literal root of “Lai Haraoba,” the major Umang Lai festival name (the “rejoicing of the gods,” featuring the maibi’s ritual trance dance). This is the plain, unavoidable native word for joy — parallel to the baseline’s treatment of ইনগবা (peace) despite its Lai Haraoba associations — but translator notes should clarify that the joy in view is joy in gospel-fruit and love-in-action, not festival merrymaking or ritual ecstasy. |
| παράκλησις | paraklēsis | ”comfort, encouragement, consolation” | encouragement, consolation, exhortation (same root as παρακαλέω) | “encouragement” (ESV/NIV), “consolation” (KJV) | | Draws on the baseline’s exhort entry থাওয়াই পীবা (encouragement sense). Risk: Low. |
| σπλάγχνα | splanchna | ”bowels, inward parts” (lit.); by extension, the seat of deep emotion/affection | compassion, tender affection, one’s inmost being | ”hearts” (most modern versions), “bowels” (KJV, literal) | A vivid Greek/Hebraic idiom for the seat of compassion — here, the saints’ inmost being has been “refreshed” by Philemon’s love. This same word returns at the letter’s emotional peak, describing Onesimus himself (v.12) and Paul’s own heart (v.20). | থমোই (thamoi, “heart/inner feeling/mind”). Risk: Medium. New term, appearing three times in this short letter (vv.7, 12, 20) as a structural thread. Render idiomatically as “heart/inmost being,” not literally as bodily organs; ensure consistency across all three occurrences per the theological-consistency rules established in the Language Package. |
| ἀναπαύω | anapauō | ”to refresh, give rest to" | | "refreshed” (ESV/NIV), “the bowels of the saints are refreshed” (KJV) | | থমোই ঙাংহনবা (thamoi nganghanba, “give rest/relief to the heart”). Risk: Low-Medium. Keep this verb consistent with its recurrence in v.20. |
| ἀδελφός | adelphos | Vocative “brother” — see v.1 note. Same term, ইচিল-ইনাউ. Risk High (reused within this document). | | | | |
PART 2 — Core Passage: Philemon 1:8–21 (verse-by-verse)
v.8 — Διὸ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον
“Therefore, though I could be bold and order you to do what is required…” (ESV, paraphrased)
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| παρρησία | parrēsia | ”all-speech, freedom/boldness of speech” | boldness, confidence, authority to speak or act plainly | ”boldness” (KJV/ESV), “confidence” (NASB), rendered as “I could be bold” (NIV) | The rhetorical hinge of the whole letter: Paul explicitly has the standing (as Onesimus’s spiritual father and Philemon’s apostolic mentor) to command outright, but deliberately sets that standing aside. This choice is the doctrine of “Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another” in miniature. | হায়নবগী মথৌ চাউবা (haynabagi mathou chauba, “the standing/right to command”). Risk: Medium. New term. Must never be rendered with শক্তি (forbidden per baseline — associated with maibi trance-power) nor as ordinary political authority; the doctrinal point is precisely that Paul chooses NOT to exercise this standing. |
| ἐπιτάσσω | epitassō | ”to command, order, direct” | authoritative command, official directive | ”command” (KJV/NASB), “order” (ESV/NIV) | The road not taken by Paul — contrasted with παρακαλῶ in v.9-10. | য়াথাং পীবা (yathang piba — reusing the baseline’s য়াথাং, “law/command,” root). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἀνῆκον | anēkon | ”what is fitting, one’s duty” | propriety, obligation, what is owed morally | ”what is proper/required” (ESV), “convenient” (KJV, archaic), “what ought to be done” (NASB) | Philemon’s Christian duty toward Onesimus, held in tension with the freely-chosen love Paul actually wants (v.14). | চৎনবা মথৌ (chatnaba mathou — reusing চৎনবা, “conduct,” from the baseline’s righteousness compound অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক). Risk: Low. |
v.9 — διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην παρακαλῶ, τοιοῦτος ὢν ὡς Παῦλος πρεσβύτης, νυνὶ δὲ καὶ δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ
“…yet for love’s sake I would rather appeal to you — I, Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀγάπη | agapē | See v.5 above. REUSED WITHIN THIS DOCUMENT: নুংশিবা, High risk. Here it is explicitly named as the ground of Paul’s method of appeal rather than command. | | | | |
| παρακαλῶ | parakalō | ”I appeal/exhort/beseech” | ranges from gentle encouragement to urgent entreaty, depending on context (same root as παράκλησις) | “I appeal” (ESV/NIV), “I beseech” (KJV) | Here the entreaty/beseeching sense is active — Paul is pleading, not instructing. This matches the baseline’s own guidance for its “exhort” entry: “use হায়জবা for beseeching contexts.” | হায়জবা (haijaba). Risk: Medium. This is the correct context-sensitive application of the baseline’s exhort guidance (see baseline notes on থাওয়াই পীবা vs হায়জবা); do not use থাওয়াই পীবা here, which is reserved for the encouragement/edification sense. |
| πρεσβύτης | presbytēs | ”old man” (some manuscripts read πρεσβευτής, “ambassador”) | elder, aged man; textual-critical alternative: envoy/ambassador | ”an old man” (most versions), “ambassador” (marginal reading, some translations) | Either reading strengthens Paul’s rhetorical self-lowering: he appeals as an old, physically weakened man (or, alternatively, as an authorized-but-humble envoy), not as a commanding apostolic figure. | Render descriptively as হায়রিবা মিওই (hairiba miwoi, “an aged/elderly person”) with a translator note flagging the textual variant (ambassador reading). Risk: Low. Manuscript-variant footnote required, not a doctrinal risk per se. |
| δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ | desmios Christou Iēsou | ”a prisoner of Christ Jesus” | see v.1 note | ”prisoner of Christ Jesus” (all major versions) | REUSED WITHIN THIS DOCUMENT: বন্দী (bandi) + ক্রিস্তো জিসু (baseline). Risk: High. Paul’s imprisonment “belongs to” Christ — an identity marker, not mere circumstance. | |
v.10 — παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου, ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς, Ὀνήσιμον
“I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my chains”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| τέκνον | teknon | ”child” | offspring; by extension, spiritual protégé/convert | ”child” (all major versions) | Onesimus is Paul’s spiritual son, converted through Paul’s ministry while imprisoned — a paternity metaphor distinct from, but conceptually adjacent to, the baseline’s “adoption” doctrine (মচা ওইনা লৌবা). | মচা (macha, “child”). Risk: Medium. New term. As with the baseline’s adoption note, Meitei kinship and yumnak (clan) identity runs through birth lineage; spiritual fatherhood language here should be taught explicitly as a distinct, non-competing category, not assumed as a ready cultural equivalent to blood sonship. |
| ἐγέννησα | egennēsa | ”I begat/fathered” (aorist of γεννάω) | to bring forth, to cause to be born (literal or spiritual) | “whom I have begotten” (KJV/ESV), “who became my son” (NIV) | | পোকহনবা (pokhanba, “caused to be born”). Risk: Medium. Paired with মচা above; spiritual-fatherhood metaphor. |
| δεσμοί | desmoi | ”chains, bonds” | plural of δέσμιος’s root; literal imprisonment | ”chains” (ESV/NIV), “bonds” (KJV) | Onesimus was converted precisely during Paul’s imprisonment — turning Paul’s suffering into the occasion of new spiritual birth. | শাক্লো (shaklo, “chains/bonds,” descriptive). Risk: Low, paired with বন্দী. |
| Ὀνήσιμος | Onēsimos | ”useful, profitable” (proper name) | A common slave name in the Roman world, chosen (ironically, per the master) for its meaning | ”Onesimus” (transliterated in all versions) | The name itself becomes the letter’s central wordplay, activated fully in v.11. | অনীষিমস (Onishimas — provisional transliteration; confirm against a printed Manipuri Bible edition before finalizing, per the baseline’s proper-name verification convention). Risk: Low (proper name), but the wordplay it enables is High-value rhetorically — see v.11. |
v.11 — τὸν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ δὲ σοὶ καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον
“…who was formerly useless to you but is now useful both to you and to me”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἄχρηστος | achrēstos | ”useless, unprofitable” | worthless, of no benefit | ”useless” (ESV/NIV), “unprofitable” (KJV) | Direct wordplay on Ὀνήσιμος (“useful”) — Paul plays on the slave’s own name to describe his past uselessness and present usefulness, framing conversion itself as the turning point. | অকানবা (akanba, “unprofitable/not useful” — negative of কানবা). Risk: Medium. This is primarily a literary-device risk, not a doctrinal-collision risk: the translation requirement is to preserve the wordplay’s rhetorical force (ideally via a translator’s footnote explaining the Onesimus name-pun, since Manipuri cannot reproduce the Greek pun directly), not merely to convey the propositional content. |
| εὔχρηστος | euchrēstos | ”useful, profitable, serviceable” | beneficial, of good service | ”useful” (ESV/NIV), “profitable” (KJV) | | কানবা (kanba, “useful/profitable”). Risk: Medium, paired with ἄχρηστος above; same footnote requirement. |
v.12 — ὃν ἀνέπεμψά σοι, αὐτόν, τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα
“I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀναπέμπω | anapempō | ”to send back, send up” | to send (back) to a superior or to one’s origin | ”I am sending him back” (ESV/NIV) | Paul is voluntarily returning Onesimus — not keeping him, though he legally could try to. This act itself models costly reconciliation. | হন্দোকপা (handokpa, “send back”). Risk: Low. |
| σπλάγχνα | splanchna | See v.7. REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: থমোই, Risk Medium. Here applied directly to Onesimus himself — Paul identifies his own inmost affection so closely with Onesimus that sending him is like sending part of himself. This is the emotional and rhetorical center of the letter’s appeal for reconciliation. | | | | |
v.13 — ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέχειν, ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ μοι διακονῇ ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
“I wanted to keep him with me, so he could minister to me in your place while I am in chains for the gospel”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| κατέχω | katechō | ”to hold fast, retain, keep” | to detain, possess, hold in one’s control | ”keep” (ESV/NIV), “retain” (NASB) | | থমখিবা (thamkhiba, “kept/retained”). Risk: Low. |
| διακονέω | diakoneō | ”to serve, minister to” | to render service, assist, wait upon | ”minister to” (ESV/NASB), “help” (NIV) | Onesimus’s service pictures believing service rendered freely out of love, in contrast to servitude compelled by ownership. | থবক তৌবা (thouba touba, “render service/do work”). Risk: Medium. Must NOT be rendered সেবা, the term for ritual devotional service in Manipuri Vaishnavism explicitly rejected in the baseline’s obedience_of_faith entry (service performed to build bhakti standing). Onesimus’s service flows from freely-given love and gratitude, not devotional merit-accumulation. |
| δεσμοὶ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου | desmoi tou euangeliou | ”chains of the gospel” | imprisonment undergone specifically because of gospel proclamation | ”chains for the gospel” (ESV/NIV) | Combines বন্দী/শাক্লো (chains, above) with the baseline’s নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel). Risk: Low, compositional term. | |
v.14 — χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι, ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον
“But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your good deed would not be by compulsion but of your own free will”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| γνώμη | gnōmē | ”opinion, consent, judgment” | mind, will, considered decision | ”consent” (ESV/NASB), “will” (some renderings) | Paul refuses to force Philemon’s hand even indirectly — a structural safeguard for the letter’s whole “Grace-Motivated Obedience” doctrine. | মায়োক্নবা (mayoknaba, “agreement/consent”). Risk: Low. |
| ἀνάγκη | anankē | ”necessity, compulsion, constraint” | external force, obligation imposed from outside | ”compulsion” (ESV/NASB), “constraint” (KJV) | The explicit negative pole of the letter’s central ethical claim: goodness done under compulsion is not the goodness Paul is seeking from Philemon. | চেৎনা ইনবা (chetna inba, “forced compliance/compulsion”). Risk: High. New term, doctrine-defining for “Grace-Motivated Obedience.” Confirm exact phrasing with a Manipuri-speaking theologian; must be sharply distinguished from ἑκούσιον below, and this contrast itself must never be softened. |
| ἑκούσιον | hekousion | ”voluntary, of one’s own will” | freely chosen, uncoerced | ”of your own free will” (ESV/NASB), “voluntary” (some renderings) | The positive pole: Philemon’s goodness toward Onesimus must spring from freely-given love, mirroring how salvation itself is received (grace, not compulsion). | নিজমখাদগী (nijamakhadagi, “of one’s own accord”). Risk: High. New term. Paired directly with the baseline’s forbidden-alternative logic for obedience_of_faith: this voluntary goodness must never be reframed as সেবা (ritual devotional service performed to build bhakti standing) — the same forbidden substitution applies here with equal force, since Philemon’s decision is being explicitly protected from becoming an act of religious merit-accumulation. |
| ἀγαθόν | agathon | See v.6. REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: অফবা, Risk Low. | | | | |
v.15 — τάχα γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο ἐχωρίσθη πρὸς ὥραν ἵνα αἰώνιον αὐτὸν ἀπέχῃς
“For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a while, that you might have him back forever”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| χωρίζω | chōrizō | ”to separate, divide” | to part, be estranged, run away | ”separated” (ESV/NASB), “was parted” (KJV) | Paul reframes Onesimus’s flight in providential terms, without excusing the wrongdoing named explicitly in v.18. | খায়দোকপা (khaidokpa, “separated/divided”). Risk: Low. |
| αἰώνιος | aiōnios | ”eternal, forever, age-lasting” | unending, permanent (contrasted here with πρὸς ὥραν, “for an hour/a while”) | “forever” (ESV/NIV), “for ever” (KJV) | The temporary separation is reframed as producing a permanent restored relationship — pointing toward the eternal, unbreakable brotherhood declared in v.16. | ফাওবা (phauba, “forever/until completion”). Risk: Low. |
| ἀπέχω | apechō | ”to have fully, possess, receive in full” | to have back completely, receive what is due | ”have him back” (ESV/NIV), “receive” (KJV) | | মপুং ফাবা ফংবা (mapung phaba phangba, “fully receive/obtain”). Risk: Low. |
v.16 — οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλ᾽ ὑπὲρ δοῦλον, ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν, μάλιστα ἐμοί, πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον σοί, καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ
“No longer as a slave, but more than a slave — a beloved brother, especially to me, but even more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| δοῦλος | doulos | ”slave, bondservant” | a person legally owned by another; one in servitude (also used metaphorically elsewhere in the NT for “servant of Christ”) | “slave” (ESV/NASB/NIV), “servant” (KJV, softening) | This is the doctrinal center of gravity for “Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power”: Paul does not abolish the word or deny the social reality it names, but declares that the gospel transforms the relationship itself — Onesimus’s fundamental identity is no longer defined by his legal status. | দাস (das). Risk: CRITICAL. Grounded, specific collision: In Manipuri Gaudiya Vaishnavism, দাস is a live, prestigious devotional self-designation — dasya-bhava, the “servant-mood” of bhakti devotion to Krishna, is a recognized spiritual path, and many Manipuri Vaishnava devotional names carry “Das” as an honorific suffix. Using দাস here risks either (a) importing devotional-status connotations that soften the letter’s actual claim about real chattel slavery and its abolition-in-Christ, or (b) being misheard as praise (as in Vaishnava usage) rather than a description of an unjust social bondage that the gospel overturns relationally. There is no fully clean native alternative; দাস must be retained as the only viable term for the literal social category, but this curriculum must explicitly teach the distinction: Onesimus’s দাস-status was real, painful, legally enforced servitude — not a devotional honorific — and the gospel’s answer is not to relabel bondage piously but to declare it relationally abolished (“no longer as a slave… but a brother”). Also distinguish sharply from বন্দী (Paul’s own “prisoner” status, vv.1/9), a related but legally distinct category. |
| ἀδελφὸς ἀγαπητός | adelphos agapētos | ”beloved brother” | REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: ইচিল-ইনাউ (High) + নুংশিরাবা (Medium). This is the letter’s theological climax: the same kinship-and-love vocabulary applied to Timothy (a free apostolic colleague, v.1) is now applied without qualification to a runaway slave. | | | |
| σάρξ | sarx | ”flesh” | here: the natural, human, social/relational sphere (contrasted with ἐν κυρίῳ, “in the Lord,” the spiritual/eternal sphere) — NOT the sinful-nature sense σάρξ can carry elsewhere in Paul | ”flesh” (KJV/ESV, literal), “as a man” (NIV, paraphrased) | Onesimus is now a genuine brother in both spheres — the ordinary human/social relationship and the spiritual one — a double affirmation, not a spiritualizing-away of the real social relationship. | হাক্চাংগী মতাংদা (hakchanggi matangda, “in respect of the flesh/body,” i.e., the natural/human-relational sense). Risk: Medium. New term; the baseline Romans package contains no σάρξ entry at all, so this is this curriculum’s first formal introduction of the word. Must be clearly distinguished from any future Pauline-corpus usage of σάρξ for “sinful human nature” — here it names the ordinary social/familial sphere, not moral corruption. |
v.17 — εἰ οὖν με ἔχεις κοινωνόν, προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ
“So if you consider me a partner, receive him as you would receive me”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| κοινωνός | koinōnos | ”partner, sharer, participant” | one who shares fully in a common enterprise or status; an equal co-participant | ”partner” (ESV/NIV/NASB) | The rhetorical crescendo: Philemon must extend to Onesimus the same welcome he would give Paul himself — full equal-partner reception, not conditional tolerance. | লোইনবা মীওই (loinaba miwoi, “partner/co-participant person,” built on the baseline’s লোইনবা). Risk: Medium. Must convey genuinely equal-partner status (paralleling κοινωνία τῆς πίστεως in v.6), not a lesser or provisional welcome. |
| προσλαμβάνω | proslambanō | ”to receive, take to oneself, welcome” | to accept into fellowship, take in warmly | ”receive” (ESV/NASB), “welcome” (NIV) | | লৌখৎপা (loukhatpa, “welcome/accept fully”). Risk: Medium. Central “Forgiveness and Reconciliation” doctrine term — this is the concrete, embodied act the whole letter is building toward. |
v.18 — εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει, τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ἐλλόγα
“And if he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge it to me”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀδικέω | adikeō | ”to do wrong, wrong someone, act unjustly” | commit injustice/injury against another | ”wronged” (ESV/NASB/NIV) | Paul does not minimize or excuse Onesimus’s wrongdoing (likely theft and/or flight) — the reconciliation offered is not achieved by pretending no wrong occurred. | অন্যায় তৌরবা (anyay tourabа, “having done wrong/injustice”). Risk: Medium. |
| ὀφείλω | opheilō | ”to owe, be indebted” | financial or moral debt | ”owes” (all major versions) | | ঋণ থাবা (rin thaba, “to owe a debt”). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐλλογάω | ellogaō | ”to charge to one’s account, credit, put down in a ledger” | a commercial/legal accounting term — to enter a debt formally against someone’s name | ”charge it to me” (ESV/NIV), “put that on my account” (NASB) | CRITICAL theological weight: this is the same accounting/crediting metaphor-family used for the doctrine of imputation elsewhere in the New Testament (compare the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry, পীথোকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক — “righteousness credited,” built on the identical legal-ledger logic). Here Paul enacts, in miniature and in his own person, a real-life picture of substitutionary satisfaction: Onesimus’s actual debt is to be transferred to and settled by Paul. This is not a mere figure of speech in this curriculum’s doctrinal scheme — it is a live, embodied illustration of the gospel’s own accounting logic. | ঐগী ঋণ ওইনা ইকপা (aigi rin oina ikpa, “record/credit it as my debt”). Risk: CRITICAL. Must be flagged for human theologian review every occurrence; the curriculum should explicitly draw the line from this verse to the baseline’s imputed_righteousness doctrine rather than translating it as a merely incidental financial idiom. |
v.19 — ἐγὼ Παῦλος ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί, ἐγὼ ἀποτίσω· ἵνα μὴ λέγω σοι ὅτι καὶ σεαυτὸν μοι προσοφείλεις
“I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it — not to mention that you owe me your very self”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀποτίνω | apotinō | ”to pay back in full, repay” | full financial settlement of a debt | ”I will repay it” (ESV/NASB/NIV) | Paul personally guarantees the debt named in v.18 — a concrete, legally binding pledge, not a vague sentiment. | হন্দোকপা (handokpa, “pay back/repay”). Risk: Low. |
| προσοφείλω | prosopheilō | ”to owe besides, be indebted in addition” | an intensified form of ὀφείλω | ”you owe me even your own self” (ESV) | Paul reminds Philemon (gently but pointedly) that Philemon’s own conversion likely came through Paul’s ministry — a debt far exceeding whatever Onesimus owes. | হেন্না ঋণ লৈবা (henna rin leiba, “owe even more,” reusing ঋণ from v.18). Risk: Low. |
v.20 — ναί, ἀδελφέ, ἐγώ σου ὀναίμην ἐν κυρίῳ· ἀνάπαυσόν μου τὰ σπλάγχνα ἐν Χριστῷ
“Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ὀνίνημι | oninēmi | ”to benefit, profit, have joy/use of” | to derive advantage or benefit from someone/something | ”let me benefit from you” (ESV), “may I have joy of thee” (KJV) | A final, poignant wordplay: ὀναίμην shares its root with Ὀνήσιμος’s own name (“useful/beneficial”). Paul asks Philemon to let Paul himself now experience the “usefulness” that Onesimus’s name promises — completing the wordplay begun in v.11. | কানবা ফংবা (kanba phangba, “obtain benefit,” reusing কানবা from v.11). Risk: Medium. Same literary-device risk as v.11; a translator’s footnote on the name-based wordplay is strongly recommended here as the wordplay’s climactic reappearance. |
| ἀναπαύω / σπλάγχνα | anapauō / splanchna | See v.7/v.12. REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: থমোই ঙাংহনবা (Low-Medium) + থমোই (Medium). The letter’s emotional throughline (Philemon’s love refreshing the saints’ hearts, v.7; Onesimus himself called Paul’s “heart,” v.12) culminates here in Paul’s direct personal appeal: “refresh MY heart.” | | | | |
v.21 — πεποιθὼς τῇ ὑπακοῇ σου ἔγραψά σοι, εἰδὼς ὅτι καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις
“Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| πείθω (perfect πεποιθώς) | peithō | ”to persuade; (perfect) to be confident, trust” | confident trust based on known character | ”confident” (ESV/NASB/NIV), “having confidence” (KJV) | | থাজরিবা (thajariba, “trusting/being confident,” built on the baseline’s থাজবা root). Risk: Low. Note: same root as saving faith but a distinct, interpersonal-trust sense here; context makes the distinction clear. |
| ὑπακοή | hypakoē | ”obedience, compliance” | submission to authority or to a request, out of respect or love | ”obedience” (all major versions) | Distinct from, but thematically related to, the baseline’s obedience_of_faith (থাজবগী ইনবা), which names obedience flowing from saving faith in a soteriological sense. Here ὑπακοή names Philemon’s expected obedience to Paul’s personal appeal — the letter’s whole point is that this obedience must be the fruit of freely-given love (v.14), not compelled compliance, making this verse the doctrinal anchor for “Grace-Motivated Obedience.” | ইনবা (inba, “obedience/compliance”). Risk: High. New term, standalone from the baseline’s obedience_of_faith compound; the curriculum must teach explicitly that this interpersonal obedience is not devotional সেবা (rejected, per baseline) or externally compelled duty (ἀνάγκη, rejected in v.14), but the natural fruit of ἀγάπη already described throughout the letter. |
PART 3 — Closing (Philemon 1:22–25)
v.22 — ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἑτοίμαζέ μοι ξενίαν· ἐλπίζω γὰρ ὅτι διὰ τῶν προσευχῶν ὑμῶν χαρισθήσομαι ὑμῖν
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ξενία | xenia | ”hospitality, guest room, lodging” | a place/provision prepared for a guest | ”guest room” (ESV/NIV), “lodging” (KJV/NASB) | Paul expects release and a future visit — hospitality is the concrete, practical form Christian fellowship takes. | ওকপগী য়ুম (okpagi yum, “guest room”). Risk: Low. Meitei hospitality customs provide natural cultural resonance here. |
| χαρίζομαι | charizomai | ”to grant as a favor, give freely” (same root as χάρις, grace) | to bestow a gift/favor, often as an act of grace or forgiveness | ”I will be given to you” (ESV), “granted to you” (NASB) | A quiet wordplay: Paul’s own hoped-for release is itself pictured as an act of grace (χάρις) — the same category of unmerited gift Paul has been describing all along regarding Onesimus. | Render with a phrase built on the baseline’s grace-verb sense: তেংবাং মপুনা পীগনি (Tengban Mapuna pigani, “God will grant/give [me]”). Risk: Low-Medium. Thematic note: preserve the grace-root echo where possible in translator commentary, even though a one-to-one Manipuri wordplay is unlikely to be achievable. |
| προσευχή | proseuchē | See v.4. REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: হায়জবা, Risk Low. | | | | |
v.23–24 — ἀσπάζεταί σε Ἐπαφρᾶς ὁ συναιχμάλωτός μου ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, Μᾶρκος, Ἀρίσταρχος, Δημᾶς, Λουκᾶς, οἱ συνεργοί μου
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| ἀσπάζομαι | aspazomai | ”to greet, salute” | conventional epistolary greeting | ”greets you” (ESV/NIV) | | খুরুমজরি (khurumjari, “greets,” from খুরুম, a standard Meitei greeting/respect term). Risk: Low. |
| συναιχμάλωτος | synaichmalōtos | ”fellow prisoner-of-war, fellow captive” | one captured together with another (a stronger term than δέσμιος — literally “co-captive-taken-by-the-spear”) | “fellow prisoner” (ESV/NIV) | A distinct, more intense captivity-term than δέσμιος (v.1/9); Epaphras shares Paul’s captivity itself, not merely gospel-labor. | লোইনবা বন্দী (loinaba bandi, “companion-prisoner,” built on বন্দী). Risk: Low. |
| συνεργός | synergos | See v.1. REUSED WITHIN DOCUMENT: থবক লোইনবা, Risk Low. | | | | |
v.25 — ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|
| χάρις | charis | REUSED FROM BASELINE: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং, Critical. Standard epistolary benediction. | | | | |
| πνεῦμα | pneuma | ”spirit” | here: the human spirit/inner person of the addressee(s) — NOT the Holy Spirit | ”your spirit” (all major versions) | Important technical distinction for this curriculum: the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule states বেয়ার (bare) থাওয়াই must never stand in for the Holy Spirit, since bare থাওয়াই can denote ancestral or Umang Lai nature-spirits in Sanamahi belief. That rule concerns using bare থাওয়াই as a substitute for the divine Holy Spirit. Here, however, πνεῦμα legitimately denotes Philemon’s own human spirit/inner being — a different referent altogether, correctly rendered with bare থাওয়াই. | থাওয়াই (thawai, used alone, correctly, here). Risk: Medium. New clarifying note required for translators: this is the one legitimate context in this curriculum where bare থাওয়াই is the correct choice — translators must not mistakenly append অসেংবা (which would wrongly imply “may the Holy Spirit be with your Holy Spirit,” a category error) nor treat this occurrence as violating the baseline’s Holy Spirit rule, which governs a different referent entirely. |
Summary: Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
Philemon’s single chapter has been analyzed in full: vv.1–7 (Opening/Salutation), vv.8–21 (Core Passage, full verse-by-verse), vv.22–25 (Closing). Every verse contributes load-bearing vocabulary; no verse or section required a “no new terms” notation. Terms already governed by the Romans baseline (grace, faith, God, Father, Lord, Jesus, Christ/Messiah, church, saints, fellowship, thanksgiving, exhort, intercession, peace, obedience of faith, holy) are reused exactly and not re-derived. All newly introduced terms are compiled with full risk annotation in 08_core_glossary.md.
