Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 1 Peter (Full Book) | English → Manipuri
Curriculum: 1 Peter 1–5 Core passage: 1 Peter 1:3–9 Method: Every Old Testament quotation and allusion in 1 Peter is catalogued chapter by chapter, together with messianic references, Old-Testament typology fulfilled in Christ, and parallels to the Romans curriculum already established in this Language Package (the only other curriculum with completed Phase 1 artifacts at this time). Citations are normalized to “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g. “Isaiah 28:16”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 9:33”) for consistent lookup across Phase 2 tooling. Where 1 Peter and Romans independently quote or allude to the same Old Testament source, a rendering-consistency rule is recorded so Phase 2 translation of both curricula produces identical Manipuri wording for the shared source text.
Part A — Old Testament Quotations and Allusions, by Chapter
| # | 1 Peter Passage | OT Source | Theme | Related Character | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 Peter 1:16 | Leviticus 19:2 (cf. Leviticus 11:44-45; 20:7,26) | Holiness in Conduct | Moses / Israel at Sinai | Direct quotation | Grounds Christian ethics in God’s own character, not a ritual purity code. Must use baseline অসেংবা (holy) and distinguish from ritual-purity preparation practiced before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship (per baseline “holy” notes). |
| 2 | 1 Peter 1:24-25 | Isaiah 40:6-8 | Living Hope of the Resurrection (imperishable word as new-birth “seed”) | Isaiah | Direct quotation | The contrast “grass withers… word remains forever” must reinforce, not compete with, the CRITICAL new-birth/অনৌবা মপোকপা distinction from পুনর্জন্ম; this is about a Word that endures, not a soul that cycles. |
| 3 | 1 Peter 2:3 | Psalm 34:8 | Living Hope / Faith | David | Direct quotation (“tasted that the Lord is good”) | “Taste” is experiential, relational language for God’s goodness; avoid any rendering suggesting ritual tasting of consecrated offerings (Vaishnava prasad, which is literally tasted/eaten as a devotional act) — this is a metaphor for personal experience of God’s kindness, not a ritual food-sharing practice. |
| 4 | 1 Peter 2:6 | Isaiah 28:16 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood / Deity of Christ | Messianic (the “stone in Zion”) | Direct quotation | SHARED with Romans 9:33. See Rendering-Consistency Rule 1 below. Critical: this stone is Christ himself; must not be softened into “a wise foundational teaching” abstracted from his person. |
| 5 | 1 Peter 2:7 | Psalm 118:22 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood / Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | David (royal/enthronement psalm); Messianic | Direct quotation | Rejection-then-exaltation pattern (also quoted by Jesus of himself in the Gospels, e.g. Matthew 21:42 — future curriculum cross-reference). Must retain the reversal shape: rejected by men, chosen and precious to God. |
| 6 | 1 Peter 2:8 | Isaiah 8:14 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood / Deity of Christ | Messianic | Direct quotation | SHARED with Romans 9:33. See Rendering-Consistency Rule 1 below. Christ divides humanity by response to him — must not be flattened into a morally neutral “obstacle” image. |
| 7 | 1 Peter 2:9 | Exodus 19:5-6; Isaiah 43:20-21; Isaiah 61:6 | The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood | Moses / Israel at Sinai | Allusion (compound covenant-identity formula) | CRITICAL: see full priesthood cautions already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md (#54, #56) — must never be heard through the Brahmin পুরোহিত temple-office model; every believer, not a specialist caste, is in view. |
| 8 | 1 Peter 2:10 | Hosea 1:6,9; Hosea 2:23 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood / Unity of Jews and Gentiles (baseline doctrine) | Hosea | Direct quotation | SHARED with Romans 9:25-26. See Rendering-Consistency Rule 2 below. |
| 9 | 1 Peter 2:12 | Isaiah 10:3 (background: “day of visitation”) | Holiness in Conduct | Isaiah | Allusion | ”Day of visitation” = the day God’s just, personal scrutiny is revealed; must not be rendered as an impersonal reckoning-of-fate (ৱাইফম), consistent with baseline “providence” caution. |
| 10 | 1 Peter 2:22 | Isaiah 53:9 | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | Suffering Servant (Messianic) | Direct quotation | Christ’s sinlessness is the necessary qualification for substitution; must retain পাপ (baseline sin) precisely — “he committed no sin” cannot be softened to “he did little wrong.” |
| 11 | 1 Peter 2:23-24 | Isaiah 53:4-5,7,12 | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | Suffering Servant (Messianic) | Direct quotation / close paraphrase | Foundational Isaiah 53 text; must hold BOTH the exemplary sense (silent endurance, 2:23) and the substitutionary sense (bore our sins, 2:24) together — see 07_semantic_analysis.md entry “bore our sins in his body.” |
| 12 | 1 Peter 2:25 | Isaiah 53:6; Ezekiel 34:5-6,11-16 | Elders and Humility (Shepherd-Christology) | Suffering Servant / Ezekiel’s shepherd oracle | Allusion | CRITICAL Manipuri collision — see Shepherd entry in 08_core_glossary.md (#73); Ezekiel 34’s shepherd-of-Israel background must anchor the image, not Govinda/cowherd devotional imagery. |
| 13 | 1 Peter 3:6 | Genesis 18:12 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | Sarah / Abraham | Allusion (historical example) | Sarah’s submission is presented as free and honorable, not coerced; must be taught alongside the “joint heirs” equality statement (1 Peter 3:7) per the Gender Language Handling rule. |
| 14 | 1 Peter 3:10-12 | Psalm 34:12-16 | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | David | Direct quotation | ”Seek peace and pursue it” — reuses baseline ইনগবা (peace); “eyes of the Lord on the righteous” reuses baseline অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness) root. |
| 15 | 1 Peter 3:14-15 | Isaiah 8:12-13 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | Isaiah | Allusion / near-direct quotation | ”Have no fear of them, nor be troubled” reuses the কিবা (reverent fear) distinction already flagged: fear God alone, not human threat or ritual dread of offended spirits. |
| 16 | 1 Peter 3:18-20 | Genesis 6:1-8:19 (Noah, the flood, the ark) | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | Noah | Typology | CRITICAL — see full “spirits in prison” caution in 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md (#47). The Genesis 6 “sons of God” background (Genesis 6:1-4) is the most probable referent for the imprisoned spirits and must be taught as a closed, historical, judged category, sharply distinct from Sanamahi’s living, ritually-accessible ancestral/Umang Lai spirit-world. |
| 17 | 1 Peter 3:22 | Psalm 110:1 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | David (royal/Messianic psalm) | Allusion | ”Right hand of God” — idiom of supreme exalted authority; reuses baseline মপু ইবুংগো (Lord) framework. Must not be read as merely one honored seat among several divine figures. |
| 18 | 1 Peter 4:8 | Proverbs 10:12 | Holiness in Conduct | Solomon | Allusion / paraphrase | ”Love covers a multitude of sins” reuses নুংশিবা (love, flagged Ras Lila-collision term) and পাপ (baseline sin); this is forgiving, covenant-community love, not romantic devotional love. |
| 19 | 1 Peter 4:17 | Ezekiel 9:6; Malachi 3:1-3 | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | Ezekiel / Malachi | Allusion | ”Judgment begins at the household of God” — a purifying, not merely punitive, judgment; distinguish from impersonal karmic retribution. |
| 20 | 1 Peter 4:18 | Proverbs 11:31 (LXX) | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | Solomon | Direct quotation | ”If the righteous is scarcely saved…” reuses baseline অহানবা (salvation) and অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness); must not be read as suggesting salvation itself is uncertain or earned through difficulty — the force is rhetorical (how much worse for the ungodly), not soteriological doubt. |
| 21 | 1 Peter 5:5 | Proverbs 3:34 | Elders and Humility | Solomon | Direct quotation | ”God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” directly links baseline grace (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং) to humility (নিংতম্বা ওইবা); must retain grace’s unmerited-favor sense here, not a reward-for-humility-as-merit reading. |
| 22 | 1 Peter 5:7 | Psalm 55:22 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | David | Allusion | ”Cast your anxiety on him” ties to baseline তেংবাং মপুগী থৌরাং (Providence); God’s personal care, not fate. |
| 23 | 1 Peter 5:8 | Psalm 22:13; Amos 3:8 (roaring lion image); background Job 1:7 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | David / Amos / Job | Allusion | See CRITICAL “devil/adversary” caution already flagged (08_core_glossary.md #79) — deliberately avoid লাই-root and bare থাওয়াই vocabulary. |
Part B — Messianic References and Old Testament Typology
| Type (OT) | Antitype (1 Peter) | Passage(s) | Doctrine | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passover/sacrificial lamb without blemish (Exodus 12:5,46; Leviticus 22:19-21) | Christ, “a lamb without blemish or spot” | 1 Peter 1:19 | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | Reuses য়াওগী মচা (lamb, High risk). Once-for-all; never assimilated to a repeated indigenous or Vaishnava offering pattern. |
| Suffering Servant (Isaiah 52:13-53:12) | Christ’s silent, righteous, substitutionary suffering | 1 Peter 2:21-25; 3:18 | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | The controlling OT text for the entire letter’s suffering theology; Isaiah 53 is quoted or echoed at least five separate times across chapters 1–3. |
| Rejected stone become cornerstone (Psalm 118:22); stone in Zion (Isaiah 28:16); stone of stumbling (Isaiah 8:14) | Christ rejected by men, chosen and precious to God | 1 Peter 2:4-8 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood; Deity of Christ | Triple-stone testimonia; shared verbatim OT sources with Romans 9:33 — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 1. |
| Noah, the ark, the flood (Genesis 6:1-8:19) | Baptism as the corresponding reality (ἀντίτυπον) that now saves | 1 Peter 3:20-21 | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | The flood judged the disobedient and delivered the few through water; baptism’s meaning is explicitly clarified by Peter himself (3:21b) as an appeal for a good conscience, not water’s ritual power. |
| Shepherd of Israel (Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23; Isaiah 40:11) | Christ the Shepherd and Overseer of souls; Chief Shepherd over under-shepherd elders | 1 Peter 2:25; 5:2-4 | Elders and Humility | CRITICAL Manipuri collision with Govinda/cowherd Krishna devotion (Ras Lila) — mandatory distinguishing note at both occurrences. |
| Covenant nation at Sinai — “a kingdom of priests, a holy nation” (Exodus 19:5-6) | The church as royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s own people | 1 Peter 2:9-10 | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | The letter’s central corporate-identity statement; Exodus 19 is the direct OT anchor. |
| Sarah’s submission to Abraham, calling him “lord” (Genesis 18:12) | Wives’ voluntary, gospel-motivated submission | 1 Peter 3:5-6 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | Must be taught with 1 Peter 3:7’s “joint heirs” statement to avoid a demeaning reading. |
| Adam’s disobedience / general OT pattern of exile and sojourning (Genesis 3; 1 Chronicles 29:15; Psalm 39:12) | Believers as “elect exiles,” “sojourners and exiles” | 1 Peter 1:1; 2:11 | Living Hope of the Resurrection (identity dimension) | Theological identity as heavenly citizens; must not be mapped onto contemporary Manipur ethnic-displacement politics (per baseline mission-doctrine caution). |
Part C — Cross-Curriculum Parallels to Romans (and Future Curricula)
| 1 Peter Passage | Romans Parallel | Shared Theme | Rendering-Consistency Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Peter 2:6,8 | Romans 9:33 | Christ as stumbling stone / cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16 + Isaiah 8:14) | MUST render identically — see Rule 1. |
| 1 Peter 2:10 | Romans 9:25-26 | Gentile inclusion as God’s people (Hosea 1:6,9; 2:23) | MUST render identically — see Rule 2. |
| 1 Peter 2:13-17 | Romans 13:1-7 | Submission to governing authorities | Use identical key terms: ইনবা (submit), নিংথৌ (king/emperor), generic মপু (master, disambiguated from মপু ইবুংগো). Both curricula share the same CRITICAL political-sensitivity caution already recorded in the Romans baseline notes on “law”/government passages and this curriculum’s “Submission to Authority” doctrine. |
| 1 Peter 3:18 | Romans 3:25; Romans 5:6-8 | Christ’s substitutionary death for the unrighteous/ungodly | Consistent atonement vocabulary: অচুম্বনা অচুম্বা নত্তবাগীদমক্তা (the righteous for the unrighteous) must not diverge conceptually from Romans’ propitiation/justification language even though the specific compound is new to this curriculum. |
| 1 Peter 1:3-5 | Romans 8:18-25 | Future glory/hope guaranteed but not yet fully unveiled | Consistent হিংবা আশা (living hope) and মতিক চাউবা (baseline glory) usage across both curricula. |
| 1 Peter 1:6-7 | Romans 5:3-5 | Suffering produces tested, proven character; hope does not disappoint | Consistent চাংদন য়েংবা (trial/testing) vocabulary; both passages teach a purposive, non-karmic view of hardship. |
| 1 Peter 2:5 | Romans 12:1 | Believers’ lives/bodies as spiritual offering/worship | থাওয়াইগী ইরাত্ত (spiritual sacrifices) should conceptually align with Romans 12:1’s “living sacrifice, spiritual worship” language if/when a future Romans curriculum revision adds that verse’s specific rendering; flag for terminology-team alignment. |
| 1 Peter 2:9 | Romans 9:25-26; Romans 11:5 (remnant) | Chosen/elect people of God | Consistent তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (election, baseline) root; never ৱাইফম (fate) in either curriculum. |
| 1 Peter 1:20 | Romans 8:29-30 | Foreknowledge preceding calling/redemption | Consistent তেংবাং মপুগী হান্না খংবা (foreknowledge); both anchor providence in personal divine purpose, not impersonal fate. |
| 1 Peter 5:5 | Romans 12:3,10,16 | Mutual humility within the church | Consistent নিংতম্বা ওইবা (humility). |
| 1 Peter 4:8 | Romans 13:8-10 | Love as the community’s governing ethic | Consistent নুংশিবা (love), with the same Ras Lila-collision caution applying in both curricula wherever ἀγάπη is used relationally. |
| 1 Peter 1:14-16 | Romans 12:1-2 | Transformed, holy conduct as the shape of the Christian life | Consistent চৎনবিরাক (conduct) and অসেংবা (holy). |
| 1 Peter 3:9 | Romans 12:17-21 | Non-retaliation; overcoming evil with blessing/good | New term needed for “do not repay evil for evil” (pending Phase 2 coinage); flag for consistency with any future Romans 12:17-21 rendering. |
| 1 Peter 5:8 | Romans 16:20 | The defeat/subjection of Satan/the adversary | Consistent য়েক্লবা লান্মী (adversary/devil, CRITICAL term); Romans 16:20’s promise of the adversary being “crushed” should use compatible defeat-language when that curriculum reaches Phase 2. |
| 1 Peter 3:18-22 | (no direct Romans parallel) | Christ’s cosmic supremacy over spiritual powers | Note for future curricula: Ephesians, Colossians (already tagged in this Language Package’s broader scope) will require this same “spirits/powers subjected to Christ” vocabulary; flag ফোংদোকপা (proclaim) and স্বর্গদূত অমসুং পাংথোক-থেংনবাশিং (angels/powers) for reuse when those books reach Phase 1. |
Note on scope: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, and the remaining Pauline epistles are listed in this Language Package’s broader tag scope but have not yet received completed Phase 1 cross-reference artifacts. Where 1 Peter shares source material with those books (e.g. Psalm 118:22 is also quoted by Jesus in Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17), this is noted here as pending future cross-reference confirmation once those curricula reach this Phase 1 step, not as a present inconsistency.
Part D — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
These rules bind Phase 2 translation of BOTH the Romans and 1 Peter curricula. They must be entered into the shared translation memory as fixed quotation-level entries (distinct from single-term entries) before either curriculum’s Phase 2 processing of the affected verses begins.
Rule 1 — The Stone Testimonia (Isaiah 28:16 + Isaiah 8:14, combined in Romans 9:33; separately in 1 Peter 2:6,8). Romans 9:33 fuses Isaiah 28:16 (“whoever believes in him will not be put to shame”) with Isaiah 8:14 (“a stone of stumbling, a rock of offense”) into a single composite citation. 1 Peter 2:6 and 2:8 quote the same two Isaiah verses separately, as part of a three-stone catena that also includes Psalm 118:22. Rule: The clause “whoever believes in him will not be put to shame” (Isaiah 28:16b) must be rendered identically wherever it occurs in either curriculum. Likewise “a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense” (Isaiah 8:14b) must be rendered identically in both. The surrounding sentence structure may differ (Romans’ fused citation vs. 1 Peter’s separated citations), but the shared clauses themselves must be word-for-word consistent in Manipuri.
Rule 2 — The Hosea “Not My People / My People” Formula (Hosea 1:6,9; 2:23, quoted in Romans 9:25-26 and 1 Peter 2:10).
Both Romans 9:25-26 and 1 Peter 2:10 quote Hosea to describe Gentile inclusion into God’s people. Rule: The formula “once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people” (and its converse, “once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy”) must use identical Manipuri vocabulary in both curricula, built on baseline অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ (Gentiles) and the new mercy term থমোইদা তাবা চানবি (mercy, distinct from grace) established in this curriculum’s 08_core_glossary.md.
Rule 3 — Submission-to-Authority Core Vocabulary (Romans 13:1-7 and 1 Peter 2:13-17; 3:1-7; 5:5). Both curricula treat civil/household/ecclesial submission as voluntary, gospel-motivated, Christ-imitating conduct — never passive fatalism, never endorsement of injustice. Rule: ইনবা (submit/submission) and নিংথৌ (king/ruler) must be used identically across both curricula’s treatment of governing authority, and both curricula’s translator notes must carry the same mandatory human-theologian-review flag given Manipur’s historical and contemporary sensitivity around governing authority.
Rule 4 — Substitutionary Atonement Core Vocabulary (Romans 3:24-25; 5:6-8 and 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18). Both curricula assert Christ’s death as a substitution for sinners (“the righteous for the unrighteous,” “Christ died for the ungodly”). Rule: Terms built on the বাseline অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness) root and this curriculum’s অচুম্বনা অচুম্বা নত্তবাগীদমক্তা (the righteous for the unrighteous) compound must remain conceptually and lexically aligned; if Romans’ Phase 2 output later coins its own explicit “propitiation” rendering, that term must be cross-checked against 1 Peter’s substitution vocabulary for consistency before either is finalized.
Rule 5 — General Citation Format.
All Old Testament and cross-curriculum citations in Phase 2 output and reviewer materials must use the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” format demonstrated throughout this document (e.g. “Isaiah 28:16”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 9:33”, “1 Peter 2:6”), matching the YouVersion reference system already mandated in the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Arabic numerals only; no Bengali numerals in citations.
Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
All five chapters of 1 Peter have been reviewed for Old Testament quotations, allusions, typology, and messianic reference. Every direct quotation identified by standard critical consensus (Leviticus 19:2; Isaiah 40:6-8; Psalm 34:8; Isaiah 28:16; Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 8:14; Hosea 1:6,9/2:23; Isaiah 53:4-9,12; Psalm 34:12-16; Proverbs 10:12; Proverbs 11:31; Proverbs 3:34) and every major typological/allusive connection (Exodus 19:5-6; Genesis 18:12; Genesis 6-8; Psalm 110:1; Ezekiel 34; Isaiah 8:12-14; Psalm 55:22; Psalm 22:13/Amos 3:8) has been catalogued above with theme, character, connection type, and Manipuri-specific translation sensitivity. Two quotation sources (the stone testimonia and the Hosea formula) were confirmed as directly shared with the Romans baseline curriculum and given binding cross-curriculum rendering-consistency rules.
