Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Philippians (Full Book) — English → Manipuri
Scope and Method
This analysis covers the entire book of Philippians, chapters 1–4, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Philippians 2:1–11 (the Christ Hymn), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level section covering its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in Philippians, and destination-language (Manipuri) rendering risk.
Governing rule: Any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json MUST be reused exactly, without modification. These are marked [BASELINE REUSE] below. New terms proposed for this Philippians curriculum are marked [NEW] and carry a provisional Manipuri rendering pending theologian/native-speaker confirmation, following the same provisional-coinage convention the baseline itself uses (e.g., for “covenant,” “imputed righteousness”).
Manipur’s live dual religious landscape — Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai, Lai Haraoba, the maibi) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion, Ras Lila, bhakti, kṛpā) — remains the controlling framework for all risk assessment, exactly as in the Romans package. Philippians introduces a third zone of specific risk not prominent in Romans: the Christ Hymn’s κένωσις/μορφή vocabulary intersects directly with Vaishnava avatar and līlā (divine play/descent) theology, and Meitei historic kingship vocabulary intersects directly with Philippians’ “citizenship in heaven” language.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Philippians 2:1–11
Philippians 2:1
Greek: εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ, εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης, εἴ τις κοινωνία πνεύματος, εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί
| Field | παράκλησις (paraklēsis) | κοινωνία πνεύματος (koinōnia pneumatos) | σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί (splanchna kai oiktirmoi) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”calling alongside”; encouragement, comfort, exhortation | ”fellowship/partnership of the Spirit" | "inward parts/bowels” (seat of emotion) and “acts of pity/mercy” |
| Semantic range | comfort, consolation, appeal, exhortation | shared participation, joint partnership, communion | deep compassion, tender mercy, gut-level affection |
| English variants | encouragement / consolation / comfort | fellowship of the Spirit / participation in the Spirit | affection and compassion / tenderness and mercy |
| Contextual theological meaning | Paul appeals to what believers already possess in Christ as motivation for unity (leads into vv. 2–4) | Shared life produced by the one Holy Spirit indwelling all believers — the ground of appeal for like-mindedness | The relational warmth that should exist among believers, modeled on Christ’s own compassion |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] Medium. No exact prior term; propose descriptive compound. | [BASELINE REUSE] কোইনōnia = লোইনবা (loinaba, “fellowship”). Render as থাওয়াই অসেংবাগী লোইনবা (Thawai Asengbagi loinaba) — “fellowship of the Holy Spirit,” using the fixed থাওয়াই অসেংবা (never bare থাওয়াই, per baseline forbidden-substitution rule, since bare থাওয়াই risks Sanamahi ancestral/Umang Lai spirit associations). | [NEW] Medium. Propose পুক্নিং চেংবা অমসুং চীংনবা (pukning chengba amasung chingnaba, “compassion of heart and mercy”). |
Manipuri gloss draft: যদি ক্রিস্তোদা থাওয়াই পীবগী ৱাফম লৈবা, অদুগা নুংশিবগী পুক্নিং চেংবা লৈবা, অদুগা থাওয়াই অসেংবাগী লোইনবা লৈবা, অদুগা পুক্নিং চেংবা অমসুং চীংনবা লৈবা…
Philippians 2:2
Greek: πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαράν, ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε, τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες, σύμψυχοι, τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες
| Field | φρονέω (phroneō) | ἀγάπη (agapē) | σύμψυχος (sympsychos) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | to think, to set one’s mind on, to hold an attitude/disposition | selfless, giving love | ”co-souled,” one in soul/spirit |
| Semantic range | mindset, orientation, attitude, way of thinking/valuing | love as deliberate self-giving commitment (distinct from erotic or merely affectionate love) | unity of inner disposition, being of one accord |
| English variants | be of the same mind / have this attitude / think this way | love | of one accord / united in spirit / one soul |
| Contextual theological meaning | The verb that structurally governs the whole unit (repeated in vv. 2, 5); the “mindset” Christ himself models in vv. 6–8 | The self-giving love that should characterize the church, patterned on Christ’s self-giving in v. 7-8 | The relational unity Paul urges as the practical outworking of shared mindset |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] High. This verb is the structural hinge connecting church unity (2:2) to Christ’s example (2:5); it must be rendered with the SAME Manipuri verb/compound in both places or the hymn’s logic is lost. Propose ৱাখল অমা ওইনা থাবা (wakhal ama oina thaba, “having one and the same mindset/thought”). Flag for theologian review: consistency across 2:2 and 2:5 is doctrinally load-bearing. | [NEW] High. No entry in baseline (Romans TM has no standalone “love” term). Propose নুংশিবা (nungshiba), the ordinary Manipuri word for love, but flag: unlike থাজবা (faith) which was deliberately distinguished from ভক্তি (bhakti), agapē-love here has no bhakti-specific rival term, so নুংশিবা should be safe, but require explicit contextual note that this is self-giving, not romantic/erotic love, given Ras Lila’s cultural saturation with Krishna-Radha romantic-devotional love imagery. | [NEW] Medium. Propose পুক্নিং অমা ওইবা (pukning ama oiba, “being of one heart/mind”), building on পুক্নিং (heart/mind), matching the “Unity” doctrine. |
Philippians 2:3
Greek: μηδὲν κατ’ ἐριθείαν μηδὲ κατὰ κενοδοξίαν, ἀλλὰ τῇ ταπεινοφροσύνῃ ἀλλήλους ἡγούμενοι ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν
| Field | ἐριθεία (eritheia) | κενοδοξία (kenodoxia) | ταπεινοφροσύνη (tapeinophrosynē) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | factional self-seeking, hired partisan labor | ”empty-glory,” vain conceit | ”low-mindedness,” lowliness of mind |
| Semantic range | selfish ambition, rivalry, party-strife | vanity, empty pride, self-promotion | humility, modesty, self-effacement |
| English variants | selfish ambition / strife / rivalry | vain conceit / empty pride / vainglory | humility / lowliness of mind |
| Contextual theological meaning | The opposite disposition to the unity urged in v. 2 | The opposite disposition to Christ’s self-emptying in v. 7 (note the root κενο- shared with κενόω in v. 7 — a deliberate wordplay: false “emptying” of vanity vs. Christ’s true self-emptying) | The positive virtue Christ embodies (v. 8, ἐταπείνωσεν) — this is the doctrinal center of “Unity and Humility in the Church” |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] Medium. Propose নিজমসকতগী থৌনা (nijamasaktagi thouna, “self-serving ambition/rivalry”). | [NEW] High. Propose ৱাংথৌগী চাউথোকপা (wangthougi chauthokpa, “empty/hollow self-exaltation”). Theologian note: preserve the Greek wordplay for teaching purposes — vain “emptiness” (κενοδοξία) is the false counterfeit of Christ’s true self-emptying (κενόω, v. 7); Manipuri roots differ (ৱাংথৌ vs. ৱাংথোকপা) so the wordplay itself does not transfer and must be taught explicitly, not assumed. | [NEW] CRITICAL. This is the doctrinal keyword of the “Unity and Humility” theme and directly anticipates ἐταπείνωσεν in v. 8. Propose নিং তম্বা (ning tamba, literally “lowering the heart/mind” — নিং = heart/mind, তম্বা = to be/make low). MUST be rendered with a root compatible with v. 8’s ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν so the reader sees Christ practicing what Paul commands. Theologian review required: this term has no ready equivalent in either Sanamahi or Vaishnava devotional vocabulary — Vaishnava bhakti prizes dāsya-bhāva (servant-attitude toward Krishna) but as a devotee’s posture toward a superior deity, never a god’s posture toward inferior beings, which is precisely the reversal Philippians 2 depicts and must be taught explicitly as a reversal. |
Philippians 2:4
Greek: μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστος σκοποῦντες, ἀλλὰ [καὶ] τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι
| Field | σκοπέω (skopeō) |
|---|---|
| Literal meaning | to look at, fix attention on, take aim at |
| Semantic range | to consider, regard, be intent on (same root as σκοπόν, “goal,” in 3:14) |
| English variants | look out for / regard / be concerned with |
| Contextual theological meaning | Practical unity: attentiveness redirected from self-interest to others’ interest |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] Low. Propose য়েংবা (yengba, “to look at/consider”). Note the same Greek root (σκοπ-) recurs at 3:14 (σκοπόν, “the goal”); Manipuri need not share a root here, but a translator note should flag the Greek wordplay for teaching purposes. |
Philippians 2:5
Greek: τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
| Field | φρονεῖτε (repeat of v. 2’s φρονέω) | ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (en Christō Iēsou) |
|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”think/hold this mindset" | "in Christ Jesus” |
| Semantic range | see v. 2 | union with Christ; also locative/instrumental sense (“as also seen in Christ Jesus”) |
| Contextual theological meaning | The hinge verse: commands believers’ mindset to match Christ’s own, described in vv. 6–8 | [BASELINE REUSE — doctrine “Christian Identity in Christ”] Same construction category as Romans’ ἐν Χριστῷ passages (6:1–11, 8:1, 12:5) |
| Manipuri rendering risk | CRITICAL — same rendering as v. 2’s ৱাখল অমা ওইনা থাবা required. If translators drift to a different Manipuri verb here, the hymn’s central command (“have Christ’s mindset”) is severed from its motivating unity command in v. 2. | Standard “ক্রিস্তো জিসুদা” (Christo Jisuda) construction, consistent with Romans’ established Christ-union phrasing. |
Philippians 2:6
Greek: ὃς ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ
| Field | μορφή θεοῦ (morphē theou) | ὑπάρχων (hyparchōn) | ἁρπαγμόν (harpagmon) | ἴσα θεῷ (isa theō) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”form/shape of God" | "existing, being” (present participle — continuous, ongoing state) | “a thing seized/grasped/plundered" | "equal things to God” (adverbial, “on equal terms with God”) |
| Semantic range | outward form expressing inward essence/nature (not mere appearance) | pre-existence, essential being | something to be forcibly grasped, or something already held and exploited | full equality of status/nature |
| English variants | form of God / nature of God | being / existing | a thing to be grasped / something to cling to / something to exploit | equal with God |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ’s essential, pre-incarnate divine nature — this is the CRITICAL doctrinal anchor for the Deity of Christ, prior to any self-emptying | Continuous, timeless divine existence — grounds the pre-existence of the Son, tied to Romans’ “Sonship of Christ” doctrine | Christ did NOT regard his equality with God as something to selfishly exploit for his own advantage — this is the pivot into v. 7’s self-emptying | Full ontological equality with God the Father — must not be softened |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose তেংবাং মপুগী মশক (Tengban Mapugi mashak, “the form/shape of Tengban Mapu”), built on the FIXED baseline term তেংবাং মপু (god). Theologian note: this must be sharply distinguished from the Vaishnava doctrine of viśvarūpa — Krishna’s temporary revealed cosmic form shown to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, and from the general avatar concept in which a deity assumes visible form for a specific, time-bound purpose. μορφή θεοῦ names Christ’s ETERNAL, essential nature, not a temporary theophany. | [NEW] High. Propose লैরবা লৈবা (leiraba leiba, “having continuously existed,” an imperfective/continuous construction) to preserve the eternal pre-existence sense; must not be flattened into a simple past tense that could read as a bounded episode (echoing the bounded avatar-descent pattern). | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose লৌথোকপা য়াবা পোৎ (loutokpa yaba pot, “a thing that may be seized/taken for oneself”). Theologian note: this verse’s logic (Christ had a right to divine glory but did not exploit it) has no ready parallel in either Sanamahi or Vaishnava thought and must be explicitly taught, not assumed transferable. | [BASELINE REUSE — Deity of Christ, Critical] Build on তেংবাং মপু: propose তেংবাং মপুগা মান্না ওইবা (Tengban Mapuga manna oiba, “being equal with God”). Must never be softened to “like God” or “similar to God” — full ontological equality is the doctrinal point. |
Philippians 2:7
Greek: ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος
| Field | ἐκένωσεν (ekenōsen) | μορφὴν δούλου (morphēn doulou) | ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων (homoiōmati anthrōpōn) | σχήματι (schēmati) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”he emptied himself” (aorist, a single completed act) | “the form of a slave/servant" | "in the likeness of men" | "in outward fashion/appearance” |
| Semantic range | to empty, pour out, make void, divest of privilege | slave, bondservant, one owned by and wholly obligated to a master | resemblance, likeness (implies genuine similarity, not illusion) | shape, appearance, guise, outward bearing |
| English variants | emptied himself / made himself nothing / laid aside his privileges | form of a servant / form of a slave / bondservant’s nature | likeness of men / human likeness | outward appearance / human form / manner |
| Contextual theological meaning | THE CENTRAL KENOSIS TERM. Christ’s voluntary self-limitation in taking on human nature — not a loss of deity, but an addition of a servant’s nature and a laying aside of the outward display of divine privilege | Christ, who was in the μορφή of God (v.6), takes the μορφή of a δοῦλος — the same word Paul uses of himself and Timothy in 1:1 (δοῦλοι Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ), a deliberate structural echo | Genuine, real human nature — not illusion, not mere appearance (guards against docetism) | Guards against reading ὁμοιώματι as illusory: σχήματι confirms a real, observable, ordinary human bearing |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] CRITICAL — the single highest-stakes term in this curriculum. Propose নিজমসক ৱাংথোকপা (nijamasak wangthokpa, “emptying himself,” ৱাংথোকপা = “to empty out, pour out”). MANDATORY THEOLOGIAN REVIEW. This must be sharply distinguished from Vaishnava līlā theology, in which Krishna’s earthly appearance is understood by many Gaudiya theologians as a joyful divine PLAY (līlā) in which Krishna’s full divine nature and power (and even his yogamāyā-concealed opulences) remain intact and are never actually relinquished or limited — the very opposite of κένωσις’s claim that Christ genuinely laid aside the outward exercise/display of divine privilege. This is not a cosmetic wording difference; it is the single point where Philippians 2 most directly contradicts the region’s dominant devotional theology of divine descent, and it must be taught explicitly, not left for the word choice alone to carry. | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose দাসগী মশক (dasgi mashak, “the form of a servant/slave”), OR থবক তৌবগী মশক (thabak toubagi mashak, “the form of one who serves”). Theologian review required on TWO grounds: (1) দাস (das) is the standard Bengali/Manipuri loanword for “servant/slave” but is ALSO the common devotee-identity suffix in Gaudiya Vaishnavism (e.g., names ending “-Das” marking one as a “servant of Krishna/Chaitanya”); using দাস here risks the reader hearing “Christ became a devotee” rather than “the eternal Son took on a servant’s nature” — the theological direction is precisely reversed (God becoming servant, not a person becoming God’s servant) and must be flagged in a translator note at every occurrence. (2) This is the same root as δοῦλος in 1:1 (Paul, Timothy as δοῦλοι Χριστοῦ); the Manipuri rendering MUST be identical in both places to preserve Paul’s deliberate self-comparison to Christ’s own humility. | [NEW] High. Propose মীওইগী মান্নবা (miwoigi mannaba, “resembling/like a human being”). Cross-reference with the FIXED baseline term মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (incarnation, “taking on human form/nature”) — the two terms must cohere: ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων here is describing the same historical event the baseline calls “incarnation.” | [NEW] High. Propose মীওই ওইনা উবা (miwoi oina uba, “being seen/found as a human”). Theologian note: this term functions specifically to rule out docetism (Christ only appeared human) — pair with ὁμοιώματι so that together they teach REAL humanity, avoiding any reading that could align with a temporary, non-substantial theophany. |
Philippians 2:8
Greek: καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ
| Field | ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν (etapeinōsen heauton) | ὑπήκοος (hypēkoos) | θανάτου σταυροῦ (thanatou staurou) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”he humbled himself” (aorist, deliberate self-action) | “obedient, submissive" | "death of a cross” — i.e., specifically crucifixion |
| Semantic range | self-abasement, voluntary lowering of status | compliant, submissive to authority | the most degrading, criminal form of Roman execution |
| English variants | humbled himself | obedient / submissive | death on a cross / death by crucifixion |
| Contextual theological meaning | Directly enacts the ταπεινοφροσύνη Paul commanded in v. 3 — Christ is the pattern, not merely the motivation | Christ’s obedience culminates the self-emptying — note the shared root with Romans’ ὑπακοή πίστεως (obedience of faith), though this is a distinct grammatical form describing Christ’s own obedience, not the believer’s | The specific, shameful, historical mode of death — Paul adds “even death of a cross” as a rhetorical intensification, since crucifixion was reserved for slaves and the worst criminals, tying back to the δοῦλος (slave) status of v. 7 |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] CRITICAL — must share the root with v. 3’s নিং তম্বা. Propose নিজমসক তম্বা ওইহনবা (nijamasak tamba oihanba, “made himself low”), matching the baseline’s causative pattern (cf. অচুম্বা ওইহনবা, “justification/made righteous”). This morphological parallel is intentional: Christ’s self-humbling and the believer’s forensic “being-made-righteous” share the same -ওইহনবা causative structure, reinforcing that both are divine/self acts, not human achievements. | [NEW] High. Propose ইনবা (inaba, “obedient/submissive”) — note the shared root with the FIXED baseline term থাজবগী ইনবা (obedience of faith); flag that here the obedience described is Christ’s own perfect, active obedience, not the believer’s faith-response, and must not be conflated in teaching materials. | [NEW] High. Propose ক্রুসদা সিবা (krusada siba, “dying on the cross”), transliterating ক্রুস (krus/cross) per established regional Bible-translation convention, paired with সিবা (to die). Theologian note: this specific death (a criminal’s, slave’s death) must not be softened into a generic “sacrifice” or “passing away,” since the shamefulness of the mode of death is precisely Paul’s rhetorical point, reinforcing the δοῦλος theme of v. 7. |
Philippians 2:9
Greek: διὸ καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
| Field | ὑπερύψωσεν (hyperypsōsen) | τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα (to onoma to hyper pan onoma) |
|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”highly exalted, super-exalted” (an intensive compound: ὑπέρ + ὑψόω) | “the name that is above every name” |
| Semantic range | supreme exaltation, elevation to the highest possible position | supreme rank/authority denoted by a name; here likely referring to the divine Name itself (κύριος, standing for YHWH in the LXX) |
| English variants | highly exalted / super-exalted / exalted to the highest place | the name above every name / the highest name |
| Contextual theological meaning | God’s reversal-response to Christ’s self-humbling — exaltation follows humiliation as the pattern for believers also (cf. Romans’ resurrection/glory themes) | The name given is almost certainly κύριος (Lord) — see v. 11; this is the same title fixed in the Romans baseline for exclusive divine Lordship |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] High. Propose য়াম্না মথাংদা ৱাংহনবা (yamna mathangda wanghanba, “greatly raised up on high”). Theologian note: pair explicitly with v. 8’s humbling so learners see the full humiliation-exaltation pattern (a genuinely new theological shape for readers from either Sanamahi or Vaishnava backgrounds, where divine status is not something lowered and then restored through suffering). | [NEW] CRITICAL — must connect directly to the FIXED baseline term মপু ইবুংগো (Lord). Propose মিং পুম্নমক্কী মথক্তা লৈবা মিং (ming pumnamakki mathakta leiba ming, “the name that is above all names”), with an explicit translator note identifying this name as মপু ইবুংগো (Lord) per v. 11. Must NEVER be rendered in a way that could suggest a name added to an existing pantheon of divine names (a live risk given the Umang Lai’s many named deities and the many names/forms attributed to Krishna in Vaishnava devotional literature). |
Philippians 2:10
Greek: ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
| Field | κάμψῃ γόνυ (kampsē gony) | ἐπουρανίων, ἐπιγείων, καταχθονίων (epouraniōn, epigeiōn, katachthoniōn) |
|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”should bend the knee" | "of heavenly [beings], earthly [beings], and under-the-earth [beings]“ |
| Semantic range | to kneel in submission, worship, or homage | a three-tiered cosmology encompassing every conceivable order of being |
| English variants | bow the knee / kneel | in heaven, on earth, and under the earth / every created being everywhere |
| Contextual theological meaning | Universal homage to the exalted Christ, echoing Isaiah 45:23 (every knee shall bow to YHWH) — applied directly to Jesus, a strong deity claim | Total cosmic scope: no being, in any realm, is exempt from acknowledging Christ’s Lordship — relevant to the Umang Lai’s populated spirit-world and the Vaishnava cosmology of many heavens/lokas |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] High. Propose খুরু কুন্সিন্নবা (khuru kunsinnaba, “to bend/bow the knee”). | [NEW] High. Propose স্বর্গগী, তলবগী, অমসুং লৈমাইগী মখাদা লৈবা পুম্নমক (swargagi, talbagi, amasung leimaigi makhada leiba pumnamak, “all in heaven, on earth, and under the earth”). Theologian note: this verse’s totalizing scope MUST be taught as including — not excluding — the Umang Lai and any spirit realm recognized in Sanamahi cosmology and the many lokas/heavens of Vaishnava cosmology; Christ’s Lordship is not one claim among several regional cosmological authorities but supreme over all of them. |
Philippians 2:11
Greek: καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός
| Field | ἐξομολογήσηται (exomologēsētai) | Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός (Kyrios Iēsous Christos) | εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός (eis doxan theou patros) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal meaning | ”should confess/acknowledge openly" | "Jesus Christ is Lord" | "to the glory of God the Father” |
| Semantic range | public, formal confession/acknowledgment (often used of confessing sin OR praising God) | the supreme confession of exclusive divine Lordship | God’s honor/purpose as the ultimate goal of Christ’s exaltation |
| English variants | confess / acknowledge / declare | Jesus Christ is Lord | to the glory of God the Father |
| Contextual theological meaning | Universal, verbal confession — parallels but is textually distinct from Romans 10:9’s ὁμολογήσῃς… κύριον Ἰησοῦν; both must render “Lord” identically per the Theological Consistency Rules | CRITICAL — must be verbatim-identical in doctrinal weight to Romans 10:9’s confession, using the FIXED baseline term মপু ইবুংগো. | [BASELINE REUSE] glory = মতিক চাউবা (matik chauba); father = ইপা (Ipa) — both fixed terms apply directly. |
| Manipuri rendering risk | [NEW] High. Propose ফোংদোকপা (phongdokpa, “to declare/confess openly”), building on the existing baseline root used in তোঙান তোঙানবা ফোংদোকপা (prophet) and ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল (prophecy); here used verbally for public confession. Theologian note: confirm this does not collide with the প্রফেসি/prophet sense; if ambiguity arises in testing, a distinct compound (e.g., ফোংনা হায়বা, “to say openly”) should be substituted. | CRITICAL. ক্রিস্তো জিসু মপু ইবুংগো নি (Christo Jisu Mapu Ibungo ni). Must use মপু ইবুংগো exactly per baseline; NEVER ঠাকুর. Cross-reference Romans 10:9’s escalation rule (mandatory theologian review) — this verse must be added to that same escalation list for Philippians. | মথৌ চাউবা তেংবাং মপু ইপাগী মতিক চাউবগী (mathou chauba Tengban Mapu Ipagi matik chaubagi) or simplified তেংবাং মপু ইপাগী মতিক চাউবগী — glory belongs to God the Father as the ultimate purpose of the entire hymn. |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1
Chapter 1 introduces the letter’s setting (Paul’s imprisonment), its leadership vocabulary, its partnership theme, and the joy-in-suffering theme that runs through the whole book.
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος (doulos) | doulos | slave, bondservant | one wholly owned by / obligated to a master; self-designation of humility | servant / slave / bondservant | Paul and Timothy’s self-identification (1:1); DELIBERATELY echoes the same word used of Christ in 2:7 | [NEW] CRITICAL. Must use the SAME rendering as 2:7’s দাসগী মশক / থবক তৌবগী মশক root, i.e., দাস or থবক তৌবা, so the reader can see Paul modeling Christ’s own humility. Flag the দাস/Vaishnava-devotee-suffix collision risk noted above at every occurrence. |
| ἐπίσκοπος (episkopos) | episkopos | overseer, one who watches over | church office: overseer/bishop | overseer / bishop | Church leadership structure named at the letter’s opening (1:1) — new for this curriculum (not in Romans) | [NEW] Medium. Propose চেক্শিন্নরিবা মী (chekshinnariba mi, “one who watches over/oversees”). Distinguish clearly from the Sanamahi мibu/village-elder oversight role and from any Vaishnava temple-management office; this is a spiritual shepherding office within the local কলিসিয়া (church, baseline fixed term), not an administrative or ritual-custodial post. |
| διάκονος (diakonos) | diakonos | one who serves, minister | church office: deacon; also generic “servant/minister” | deacon / minister/servant | Paired with ἐπίσκοπος as the second named church office (1:1) | [NEW] Medium. Propose থবক তৌবিরিবা (thabak touba-riba, “one who serves/ministers,” office sense). Distinguish from δοῦλος (a status/identity word) — διάκονος here names a functional church office, not a status claim. |
| κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον (koinōnia eis to euangelion) | koinonia eis to euangelion | ”fellowship/partnership toward the gospel” | shared participation in gospel work — giving, praying, laboring together | partnership in the gospel / fellowship in the gospel | Central to the “Partnership in the Gospel” doctrine (1:5); the Philippians’ financial and prayer support for Paul is itself gospel partnership | [BASELINE REUSE + NEW compound]. Build directly on fixed নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel) + লোইনবা (fellowship): নুংঙাইবগী পাউদা লোইনবা (nungngaibagi paoda loinaba). High priority for cross-document consistency; this exact compound should also be used at 4:15. |
| χαρά / χαίρω (chara / chairō) | chara / chairō | joy / to rejoice | gladness, delight; in Paul’s usage often explicitly independent of circumstance | joy / rejoice / gladness | Introduced here (1:4, 1:18, 1:25) as the letter’s dominant emotional key even from prison — foundational for “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose নুংঙাইবা (nungngaiba) as the primary noun/adjective for “joy,” reusing the same root already embedded in the FIXED baseline gospel term নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (“news of joy”) — this maximizes consistency and minimizes new-word risk. However: the ordinary Manipuri verb “to rejoice/make merry” is হরাওবা (harauba), which is also the literal root of লাই হরাওবা (Lai Haraoba), the great Sanamahi festival of “the gods’ merrymaking.” Theologian/native-speaker review required: if হরাওবা is used for Christian “rejoicing” (as natural usage may demand in some verses), every such use must be taught as joy grounded in Christ’s finished work and present suffering-endured-in-hope (1:29–30, 4:4), explicitly distinguished from festival merrymaking honoring the Umang Lai. Do not silently avoid the natural word — name the distinction. |
| δεσμά (desma) | desma | bonds, chains | literal imprisonment; also figurative bondage | chains / imprisonment / bonds | Paul’s literal Roman imprisonment (1:7, 13, 14, 17), reframed as gospel-advancing rather than gospel-hindering | [NEW] Medium. Propose ফাগৎলবা (phagatlaba, “having been bound/imprisoned”). Low doctrinal collision risk, but pair consistently with the “Joy in Suffering” note above — imprisonment is the concrete occasion for the letter’s joy theme, not incidental background. |
| πολιτεύεσθε (politeuesthe) | politeuesthe | ”conduct yourselves as citizens” | to live out one’s civic/communal identity in a manner worthy of it | let your conduct be / conduct yourselves as citizens | (1:27) The verb form of the noun πολίτευμα in 3:20; anticipates “Citizenship in Heaven” | [NEW] High. Propose তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইনা হিংবা (Tengban Mapugi leipakki miwoi oina hingba, “living as a citizen of God’s kingdom”), built on the fixed baseline term তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক (kingdom of God). Cross-reference 3:20 below; render with a shared root. |
| πάσχειν (paschein) | paschein | to suffer | to undergo suffering, hardship, affliction | suffer / suffering | (1:29–30) Suffering for Christ is presented as a grant/gift (ἐχαρίσθη) alongside faith — directly ties “Joy” and “Suffering” doctrines together | [NEW] High. Propose ওৎপা (otpa, “to suffer/endure pain”) — theologian note: Paul’s framing of suffering AS GRACE-GIVEN (ἐχαρίσθη … τὸ … πάσχειν) should be rendered using the fixed baseline grace term মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং wherever this construction appears, reinforcing (against a bhakti-merit framework) that even suffering for Christ is unearned gift, not devotional achievement. |
Chapter 2 (verses 12–30; verses 1–11 treated above as the core passage)
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε (sōtērian katergazesthe) | soterian katergazesthe | ”work out [your] salvation” | to bring to full effect, work through to completion | work out your salvation | (2:12) NOT salvation-by-works; Paul immediately grounds it in God’s own working (v.13, “God who works in you”) | [BASELINE REUSE — CRITICAL]. Salvation = ফিক্সড অহানবা. Render as নিংথীনা লৈরিবা অহানবা মপুং ফাহনবা (ningthina leiriba ahanba mapung phahanba, roughly “bring to completion the salvation you [already] have”). MANDATORY theologian flag: this verse is a live risk for being reread as salvation achieved through effort/merit, which would collapse directly into the very bhakti-devotional-achievement framework the baseline’s grace entry explicitly warns against (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6 pattern). Verse 13 (θεὸς ὁ ἐνεργῶν, “God who works [in you]”) must be translated in the same breath to prevent this misreading. |
| φόβου καὶ τρόμου (phobou kai tromou) | phobou kai tromou | ”fear and trembling” | reverent awe, not terror | fear and trembling / reverent awe | (2:12) The manner of Christian obedience — seriousness, not anxiety | [NEW] Low. Propose কীবা অমসুং নীংথিজবা (kiba amasung ningthijaba, “fear/reverence and trembling”). |
| γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν (goggysmōn kai dialogismōn) | goggysmon kai dialogismon | ”grumblings and disputings” | complaint, murmuring; contentious reasoning/arguing | grumbling and arguing / complaining and disputing | (2:14) Practical outworking of the humility/unity command from vv. 1–4 | [NEW] Low. Propose ৱারী ৱারান্না অমসুং ঈশাগী ৱারী (wari warana amasung ishagi wari, “murmuring and self-justifying argument”). |
| σπένδομαι / θυσία καὶ λειτουργία (spendomai / thysia kai leitourgia) | spendomai / thysia kai leitourgia | ”I am being poured out [as a libation]” / “sacrifice and service” | sacrificial, cultic imagery: a drink-offering poured out alongside another’s offering | poured out like a drink offering / sacrifice and service | (2:17) Paul frames his possible martyrdom as a libation poured out upon the Philippians’ own sacrificial “priestly service” of faith | [NEW] High. Propose থাদোকপা এরাংবা (thadokpa erangba, “a poured-out offering”) for σπένδομαι, and থাগবা অমসুং সেবাগী থবক (thagaba amasung sebagi thabak) for θυσία καὶ λειτουργία. Theologian note: sacrificial-offering vocabulary here risks resonance with BOTH Sanamahi Lai Haraoba offerings to the Umang Lai and Vaishnava temple pūjā/seva offerings to Krishna; must be explicitly taught as a metaphor for costly, joyful gospel service, not a literal cultic act performed for divine favor. |
| ἰσόψυχος (isopsychos) | isopsychos | ”equal-souled,” like-minded | sharing the same disposition/concern | like-minded / of one soul/mind | (2:20, of Timothy) reinforces the unity vocabulary (σύμψυχος, v.2) applied to Timothy’s genuine concern | [NEW] Low. Propose পুক্নিং মান্না ওইবা (pukning manna oiba, “having an equal/like heart”), sharing the পুক্নিং root with v.2’s unity term for consistency. |
| παραβολεύομαι (paraboleuomai) | paraboleuomai | ”to risk, gamble [one’s life]“ | to hazard oneself, expose to danger | risked his life / gambled his life | (2:30, of Epaphroditus) Physical risk taken in gospel partnership — reinforces “Partnership in the Gospel” | [NEW] Low. Propose মহাক্কী হিংবা থাদোকপা (mahakki hingba thadokpa, “risking/laying down his life”). |
Chapter 3
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σκύβαλα (skybala) | skybala | rubbish, dung, refuse | crude/vulgar term for waste, excrement | rubbish / garbage / dung | (3:8) Paul’s former religious credentials, deliberately described in the crudest possible term, discarded for Christ | [NEW] Medium. Propose অহুম (ahum, “filth/refuse”) or আরানবা (aranaba, “rubbish”). Theologian note: preserve the deliberate crudeness/shock value — do not soften into a polite term such as “loss,” which is used for a separate, milder Greek word (ζημία) two clauses earlier; the intensification from ζημία (“loss”) to σκύβαλα (“rubbish/dung”) is Paul’s rhetorical point and must be visible in translation. |
| δικαιοσύνη ἐκ νόμου / διὰ πίστεως Χριστοῦ (dikaiosynē ek nomou / dia pisteōs Christou) | dikaiosyne ek nomou / dia pisteos Christou | ”righteousness from/out of the Law” / “through faith of Christ” | law-based righteousness (works, performance) vs. faith-based righteousness (gift, trust) | righteousness from the law / righteousness through faith in Christ | (3:9) The doctrinal core of “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law” — DIRECTLY parallel to Romans 3–4 | [BASELINE REUSE — CRITICAL, mandatory exact reuse]. righteousness = অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক; faith = থাজবা; law = য়াথাং. Render: য়াথাংদগী লাকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness from the law) vs. ক্রিস্তোদা থাজবগী মখাদা লাকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness through faith in Christ). This passage should be cross-flagged with Romans 3:21–4:25 for identical theological handling: NEVER let য়াথাং collapse into ধর্ম, and NEVER let the faith-clause read as bhakti-devotional achievement. |
| κοινωνία παθημάτων αὐτοῦ (koinōnia pathēmatōn autou) | koinonia pathematon autou | ”fellowship/participation in his sufferings” | shared experiential participation in Christ’s sufferings | fellowship of his sufferings / sharing in his sufferings | (3:10) Extends the κοινωνία root from 1:5 and 2:1 into suffering — links “Partnership in the Gospel” and “Joy in Suffering” doctrines directly to union with Christ | [BASELINE REUSE]. Build on fixed লোইনবা (fellowship): মহাক্কী ওৎপগী লোইনবা (mahakki otpagi loinaba). |
| σύμμορφος (symmorphos) | symmorphos | ”co-formed, formed together with” | conformed to, sharing the same form/pattern | conformed to / become like | (3:10, 21) Shares the μορφή root with the core passage (2:6–7); believers are conformed to Christ’s death now and his glorious body at the resurrection | [NEW] High. Propose মশক মান্না ওইহনবা (mashak manna oihanba, “made to have a matching form”), deliberately sharing the মশক (mashak, “form”) root with the core passage’s তেংবাং মপুগী মশক and দাসগী মশক. This root-sharing is intentional: believers are conformed to the same self-emptying/exaltation pattern Christ himself walked. Theologian review recommended to confirm the root transfers naturally across both passages. |
| διώκω / καταλαμβάνω / βραβεῖον / σκοπόν (diōkō / katalambanō / brabeion / skopon) | dioko / katalambano / brabeion / skopon | ”I pursue/press on” / “I lay hold of/attain” / “prize” / “goal, mark” | athletic/racing imagery: pursuit of a finish-line prize | press on / press toward the goal / prize / the goal, the mark | (3:12–14) The doctrinal core of “Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ” | [NEW] High (as a set). Propose: press on = চেন্নরিবা (chennariba, “continuing to run/press on”); attain/lay hold of = লৌথোকপা (loutokpa); prize = মানা (mana, “reward/prize”); goal/mark = মচক (machak, “target/aim”). Theologian note: this athletic metaphor is culturally novel (no established Manipuri Christian athletic-race idiom is attested); confirm naturalness with native speakers before wide deployment, following the same provisional-coinage caution the baseline applies to “covenant” and “imputed righteousness.” |
| πολίτευμα (politeuma) | politeuma | ”commonwealth, citizenship, homeland” | one’s civic community of belonging; the political/social body one belongs to and is governed by | citizenship / commonwealth / homeland | (3:20) “Our citizenship/commonwealth is in heaven” — the doctrinal core of “Citizenship in Heaven”; a direct contrast to the Roman colony-citizenship Philippi’s residents prized | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose স্বর্গগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই ওইবা (swargagi leipakki miwoi oiba, “being a citizen/member of heaven’s kingdom”), built on the fixed তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক (kingdom of God) + স্বর্গ (swarga, the standard regional Christian loanword for “heaven”). MANDATORY THEOLOGIAN REVIEW, on cultural-political grounds distinct from the Vaishnava/Sanamahi religious risks that dominate elsewhere in this package: historic Meitei kingship carried its own strong “citizenship”/subject-of-the-realm concept rooted in descent from the divine serpent-ancestor Pakhangba and allegiance to the ningthou (king) — and Manipur’s present-day political landscape (including recent, sensitive inter-community conflict over land, identity, and belonging within the state) makes “citizenship” an unusually live and non-neutral word. Teach explicitly that heavenly citizenship (a) does not compete with, replace, or relativize any believer’s earthly ethnic-community or national identity, and (b) is not a claim about territorial or political sovereignty within Manipur. This doctrine must never be taught in a way that could be heard as commentary on present-day inter-community land or citizenship disputes. |
| σωτήρ (sōtēr) | sōtēr | savior, deliverer, rescuer | a title of protection/rescue applied to gods, emperors, and benefactors in the Greco-Roman world | Savior | (3:20) “We await a Savior” — ties directly to the fixed baseline salvation term | [NEW] CRITICAL. No baseline entry exists for the personal title “Savior” (only the abstract noun অহানবা, salvation, is fixed). Propose অহানবিবা (ahanbiba, “the one who saves/rescues,” an agentive form built on the same root as অহানবা, following the same agentive pattern as তবিদগী থাবিরকপা, “apostle”). Theologian note: must be distinguished from Vishnu’s role as cosmic preserver/protector in Vaishnava theology (a title-bearing, ongoing cosmic function) — Christ as সৌtēr is a personal, historically anchored Savior who will personally return (3:20’s imminent expectation), not an impersonal sustaining cosmic principle. |
| μετασχηματίσει (metaschēmatisei) | metaschematisei | ”he will transform/refashion” | change in outward form/fashion | will transform / will change | (3:21) Shares the σχῆμα root with 2:7 (σχήματι) — resurrection body as the final transformation counterpart to the incarnation’s assumption of human σχῆμα | [NEW] High. Propose ৱাংথোকহনবা (wanghanba — note: distinct coinage from ৱাংথোকপা, “empty,” used in 2:7, to avoid confusion) or simply হোংদোকহনবা (hongdokhanba, “will cause to be changed/transformed”). Cross-reference the FIXED baseline term সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা (resurrection): this transformation is bodily and glorious, continuing — never to be confused with পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), per the baseline’s standing prohibition. |
| κλῆσις … ἄνω (klēsis … anō) | anō klēsis | ”the upward call” | God’s summons directed toward a heavenly goal | the upward call / heavenly calling | (3:14) Reuses the calling vocabulary of Romans 1:1, 1:6-7, 8:28-30 | [BASELINE REUSE — High]. Use fixed কৌবগী থৌদাং (calling): মথাক্তগী কৌবগী থৌদাং (mathaktagi koubagi thoudang, “the calling from above/the upward calling”). |
Chapter 4
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| αὐτάρκης (autarkēs) | autarkes | self-sufficient, content | contentment independent of external circumstance; in Stoic usage, self-sufficiency achieved by will — Paul redefines its source | content / self-sufficient | (4:11) The doctrinal core of “Contentment in All Circumstances” — Paul explicitly redefines Stoic self-sufficiency as Christ-sufficiency in v. 13 | [NEW] CRITICAL. Propose পুক্নিং থামজবা (pukning thamjaba, “settledness/satisfaction of heart”). MANDATORY theologian review: this term must be explicitly distinguished from (a) Stoic self-generated contentment (the term’s original Greco-Roman background), (b) Vaishnava bhakti’s santoṣa (devotional contentment cultivated through surrender/seva to Krishna), and (c) any reading of contentment as passive resignation to ৱাইফম (fate) — the baseline’s standing prohibition on fate-language (see “providence,” “election”) applies here too. Paul’s contentment in 4:13 is explicitly Christ-empowered, not self-generated or fate-accepted. |
| εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ … ἡ ὑπερέχουσα πάντα νοῦν (eirēnē tou theou hē hyperechousa panta noun) | eirene tou theou he hyperechousa panta noun | ”the peace of God … which surpasses all understanding/mind” | God-given peace exceeding rational comprehension | the peace of God which surpasses understanding | (4:7) Extends the fixed baseline peace concept beyond Romans 5:1’s forensic “peace with God” into experiential guarding of heart and mind | [BASELINE REUSE]. peace = ইনগবা. Render: তেংবাং মপুগী ইনগবা, য়েংশিনবা পুম্নমক্তগী হেন্না চাওবা (Tengban Mapugi ingba, yengshinba pumnamaktagi henna chauba, “the peace of God, greater than all understanding”). Note distinct nuance from Romans 5:1’s judicial peace: here it is experiential/guarding peace (4:7’s φρουρήσει, “will guard,” military imagery) — flag this nuance for teaching, not for re-translation of the fixed term itself. |
| εὐχαριστία (eucharistia) | eucharistia | thanksgiving | grateful acknowledgment | thanksgiving | (4:6) “with thanksgiving” in the context of prayer replacing anxiety | [BASELINE REUSE — Low]. thanksgiving = থাগৎচরি (thagatchari), used exactly as in Romans. |
| ἐπιεικές (epieikes) | epieikes | gentleness, reasonableness, forbearance | yielding, gracious moderation toward others | gentleness / graciousness / forbearance | (4:5) “Let your gentleness be known to all” | [NEW] Low. Propose ফজবা পুক্নিং (phajaba pukning, “a gracious/good heart/disposition”) or নীংথিনা লৈबा (ningthina leiba). |
| καρπός / ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας / θυσία δεκτή (karpos / osmē euōdias / thysia dektē) | karpos / osme euodias / thysia dekte | ”fruit” / “fragrant aroma” / “acceptable sacrifice” | agricultural and sacrificial metaphors for the Philippians’ financial gift to Paul | fruit / fragrant offering / acceptable sacrifice | (4:17–18) The Philippians’ gift described in cultic/sacrificial terms — reinforces “Partnership in the Gospel” | [NEW] Medium. Propose মহை (mahei, “fruit”); মনম নুংশিৎলবা (manam nungshitlaba, “sweet-smelling fragrance”); লৌবা য়াবা থাগবা (louba yaba thagaba, “an acceptable offering”). Theologian note: as with 2:17’s sacrificial vocabulary, teach explicitly as metaphor for generous gospel-partnership giving, not as a literal cultic offering paralleling Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava pūjā offerings. |
| χαίρετε (chairete) | chairete | ”rejoice!” (imperative) | command form of the joy vocabulary introduced in ch.1 | rejoice! | (4:4) “Rejoice in the Lord always” — the letter’s summary command, closing the “Joy” doctrine arc begun in ch.1 | [BASELINE-INTERNAL REUSE — CRITICAL]. Must use the SAME নুংঙাইবা root established in Chapter 1’s analysis above, with মপু ইবুংগোদা (mapu Ibungoda, “in the Lord”) specifying the object of joy — joy in the Lord specifically, not generalized festival gladness. Re-apply the হরাওবা/Lai Haraoba caution note from Chapter 1 here as well, since this is the letter’s most quotable, most publicly recited verse. |
Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage
All four chapters of Philippians have been analyzed. Every chapter introduced new load-bearing theological vocabulary; no chapter is a bare repetition of prior material, though several terms (κοινωνία, δοῦλος, μορφή/σχῆμα, calling, joy) recur across chapters by deliberate authorial design and have been cross-referenced accordingly for rendering consistency. All terms already fixed in the Romans baseline (gospel, grace, faith, righteousness, salvation, law, lord, god, jesus, christ, holy_spirit, glory, father, peace, thanksgiving, resurrection, fellowship, calling, kingdom_of_god, obedience_of_faith-adjacent forms) have been flagged [BASELINE REUSE] and must be carried forward without modification. See 08_core_glossary.md for the consolidated glossary table with final risk ratings.
