Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Matthew 1–28 (English → Manipuri)
Methodology Note
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion in Matthew, every messianic reference and typological pattern, and every point of contact with the Romans Language Package (the destination language’s existing curriculum). Citations are normalized in standard “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 7:14”) for consistency with the YouVersion-aligned citation convention already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Every occurrence of a quotation shared between Matthew and Romans carries a mandatory rendering-consistency rule (Section D) so that a Manipuri reader moving between the two curricula recognizes the same underlying Scripture text. Full-book coverage is maintained: every chapter of Matthew appears in Section A, even where a chapter contributes only reused vocabulary rather than a fresh OT citation (noted explicitly as “reviewed, no new citation”).
PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter
Chapter 1 — Genealogy and Birth
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 1:1 | Davidic Covenant / Abrahamic Covenant | Abraham, David | Genesis 12:1-3; 22:18; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 | ”Son of David” opens the Gospel’s inclusio with 28:19’s “all nations”; use established দাউদ (David) root; Abraham here is covenant ancestor, not yet the justification-by-faith argument developed in Romans 4 — keep the two teaching moments distinct. |
| Matthew 1:1-17 | Grace-shaped lineage; Gentile inclusion foreshadowed | Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba (“Uriah’s wife”) | Genesis 38; Joshua 2; Ruth 4; 2 Samuel 11 | Handle these women’s histories with pastoral care, not sensationalism; their inclusion anticipates the Gentile-inclusion and grace doctrines developed fully in Romans 4 and 9-11. |
| Matthew 1:23 | Incarnation / Immanuel | — | Isaiah 7:14 | Critical: pairs with the baseline incarnation entry; render “God with us” without any avatar-adjacent language (see 08_core_glossary Immanuel entry). |
Chapter 2 — Magi, Flight to Egypt, Herod
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 2:1-12 | Kingship / worship of the Messiah | Magi, Herod | Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob,” possible allusion) | Critical: προσκυνέω (worship/homage) first appears here; establish the worship-vs-ordinary-homage distinction from the outset (see glossary entry). |
| Matthew 2:6 | Messianic birthplace | — | Micah 5:2 | Render “ruler” consistent with the kingship theme; do not let it echo Pakhangba-lineage royal ideology. |
| Matthew 2:15 | Recapitulation of Israel / Exodus typology | Israel (as God’s son) | Hosea 11:1 | High: Hosea’s “my son” originally names corporate Israel; Matthew applies it typologically to Jesus, who recapitulates Israel’s story. Hosea is reused with a different verse and purpose at Romans 9:25-26 (Hosea 1:10; 2:23, “not my people… my people,” on Gentile inclusion) — flag a translator note so the two Hosea citations are not conflated across curricula. |
| Matthew 2:16-18 | Innocent suffering / lament | Rachel | Jeremiah 31:15 | Jeremiah 31 is also the New Covenant chapter (31:31-34), quoted again at Matthew 26:28 — note this deliberate intra-Matthean canonical link for teaching. |
| Matthew 2:23 | ”He shall be called a Nazarene” | — | Possible allusion, Isaiah 11:1 (netzer/“branch”) | Medium: uncertain single OT referent; footnote as a scholarly-debated allusion, not a fixed formula quotation. |
Chapter 3 — John the Baptist, Baptism of Jesus
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 3:3 | Forerunner | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 | Standard fulfillment formula; reuse baseline prophet vocabulary. |
| Matthew 3:17 | Sonship / Deity of Christ declared | The Father (voice from heaven) | Psalm 2:7 (allusion, royal sonship); Isaiah 42:1 (allusion, servant well-pleasing) | Critical: combines the royal-messianic (Psalm 2) and servant (Isaiah 42) OT streams in one divine declaration; render son_of_god term exactly per baseline. |
Chapter 4 — Temptation, Call of Disciples, Early Ministry
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 4:4 | Scripture as final authority; true Israel | Jesus, Satan | Deuteronomy 8:3 | Jesus succeeds in the wilderness where Israel failed (Deuteronomy background); ties to Authority-of-Jesus’-Teaching doctrine. |
| Matthew 4:6 | Scripture misused | Satan | Psalm 91:11-12 | High: demonstrates Scripture can be twisted by the tempter; teach discernment, not isolated proof-texting. |
| Matthew 4:7, 4:10 | Right worship / testing God | Jesus, Satan | Deuteronomy 6:16; 6:13 | — |
| Matthew 4:15-16 | Light to the Gentiles | — | Isaiah 9:1-2 | Ties to the universal/Gentile-inclusion strand, parallel to Romans 15:8-12’s Isaiah catena on Gentile hope. |
Chapter 5 — The Sermon on the Mount Begins (Core Passage, vv.1-12, plus vv.13-48)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 5:3-11 | Beatitudes / kingdom character | — | Isaiah 61:1-3 (comfort for mourners, Spirit-anointed proclamation, allusion); Psalm 37:11 (direct source of “inherit the earth,” v.5) | Critical: teach Jesus himself as the Isaiah 61 anointed proclaimer (cf. Luke 4:18-19, referenced pedagogically); Psalm 37:11 must be the recognized OT anchor for মালেম (“earth,” see glossary) in v.5. |
| Matthew 5:17-48 | Law fulfilled, not abolished (six “antitheses”) | Moses | Exodus 20:13-14; Deuteronomy 5:17-18; 6:16; 24:1; Leviticus 19:12,18; Numbers 30:2; Exodus 21:24 | Critical: quotes/alludes to the Decalogue and Levitical law repeatedly; Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor”) recurs at Matthew 19:19 and 22:39 and, cross-curriculum, at Romans 13:9 — see mandatory consistency rule, Section D. |
| Matthew 5:34-35 | Heaven as God’s throne | — | Isaiah 66:1 (allusion) | Reinforces স্বর্গ (heaven) as God’s throne/dwelling, not a merit-attained svarga-paradise — direct textual support for the heaven-term caution in the glossary. |
Chapter 6 — Prayer, Fasting, Treasure, Anxiety
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 6:9-13 | The Lord’s Prayer | — | Echoes covenant-name theology (Exodus 3:14-15) and Jewish Kaddish-prayer patterns; not a direct formula quotation | Medium: high-frequency devotional text; render with total consistency across all curriculum materials per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule. |
| Matthew 6:25-34 | Trust in providence | — | Echoes Psalm 104’s creation-provision theme (allusion) | Ties to baseline providence term; contrast with impersonal fate (ৱাইফম), as in the baseline. |
Chapter 7 — Judging, Narrow Gate, Authority
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 7:23 | Final rejection | — | Possible allusion, Psalm 6:8 | Medium; ties to Judgment doctrine. |
| Matthew 7:28-29 | Authority of Jesus’ teaching (discourse-closing formula) | — | No direct OT citation; contrasted with scribal derivative authority | Critical: names the Authority-of-Jesus’-Teaching doctrine directly; this closing formula recurs at 11:1; 13:53; 19:1; 26:1, marking the five-discourse structure (see 10_biblical_theme_map.md). |
Chapter 8 — Healing Miracles Begin
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 8:11 | Gentile inclusion at the messianic banquet | Abraham, Isaac, Jacob | Isaiah 25:6-9 (messianic banquet, allusion) | High: anticipates Romans 11’s Gentile grafting; teach as continuous with, not a replacement of, Israel’s own hope. |
| Matthew 8:17 | Servant’s healing ministry | Suffering Servant | Isaiah 53:4 | Critical: first direct Isaiah 53 quotation in Matthew; the same Servant’s atoning death (Isaiah 53:5-12) is echoed later at 20:28 and 27:12-14 — one unified Servant identity, not three separate figures. |
Chapter 9 — Calling of Matthew, Mercy over Sacrifice
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 9:13 | Mercy over ritual sacrifice | — | Hosea 6:6 | High: directly supports Righteousness-Exceeding-the-Pharisees doctrine; do not read as devaluing ritual/sacrifice categorically, but as prioritizing heart-mercy over ritual performance emptied of it — a relevant caution given active Sanamahi and Vaishnava ritual-observance contexts. Reused verbatim at 12:7. |
Chapter 10 — The Twelve Sent Out
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 10:1-4 | Twelve apostles / new-Israel symbolism | Twelve tribes of Israel | Genesis 49 (typological background) | Medium: the Twelve symbolically reconstitute/represent Israel; reuse baseline apostle term. |
| Matthew 10:35-36 | Division within households | — | Micah 7:6 | Medium; direct quotation supporting the cost-of-discipleship doctrine. |
Chapter 11 — John’s Question, Lament, Invitation to Rest
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 11:5 | Messianic signs | — | Isaiah 35:5-6; 61:1 | High: John’s question answered by direct allusion to Isaiah’s messianic-age signs; reinforces the Messianic-Promise doctrine. |
| Matthew 11:10 | Forerunner / Elijah typology begun | Malachi’s messenger | Malachi 3:1; Exodus 23:20 (combined) | High: sets up the Elijah-John typology completed at 11:14 and 17:11-13. |
| Matthew 11:23 | Judgment-oracle pattern | Sodom | Genesis 19 (allusion); Isaiah 14:13-15 (fall-of-the-proud pattern, allusion) | Medium. |
Chapter 12 — Sabbath Controversies, Son of Man, Sign of Jonah
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 12:7 | Mercy over sacrifice (reuse) | — | Hosea 6:6 | High (reuse from 9:13). |
| Matthew 12:18-21 | Servant of the Lord, hope for the Gentiles | Suffering Servant | Isaiah 42:1-4 | Critical: full Servant Song quoted; directly parallels Romans 15:8-12’s use of Isaiah servant/Gentile-hope material — render “Gentiles will hope in his name” consistently with any Romans-curriculum treatment of the same Isaiah material. |
| Matthew 12:40 | Sign of Jonah — burial/resurrection typology | Jonah | Jonah 1:17; 2:1-10 | Critical: three-days-three-nights typology directly prefigures the Resurrection doctrine; render consistently with baseline resurrection vocabulary (সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা); this typological “sign” must not be confused with any cyclical rebirth motif. |
| Matthew 12:41-42 | Greater than Jonah / Solomon | Jonah, Solomon, Queen of Sheba | Jonah (whole book, allusion); 1 Kings 10:1-13 | Medium: a fortiori messianic argument. |
Chapter 13 — Parables of the Kingdom
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 13:14-15 | Hardening of hearing/seeing | — | Isaiah 6:9-10 | Critical: this exact text is quoted again at Romans 11:8 (there combined with Deuteronomy 29:4 and Isaiah 29:10) concerning Israel’s partial hardening. Mandatory rendering-consistency rule (Section D); teach the doctrine consistently across curricula as partial and purposive, not final rejection (cf. Romans 11:11-12, 25-26). |
| Matthew 13:35 | Parables as hidden revelation | — | Psalm 78:2 | Medium. |
| Matthew 13:43 | Righteous shining like the sun | — | Daniel 12:3 (allusion) | Medium; ties to Judgment-and-End-of-Age doctrine. |
Chapter 14 — Death of John, Feeding of 5,000, Walking on Water
Reviewed: no new OT formula quotation. Reuses προσκυνέω (worship, ch.2) and son_of_god (baseline) at 14:33 — Critical (reuse).
Chapter 15 — Tradition vs. Heart-Purity, the Canaanite Woman
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 15:4 | Honoring parents (Decalogue) | Moses | Exodus 20:12; 21:17 | High: same commandment recurs at Matthew 19:19; render consistently within Matthew at minimum, noting Ephesians 6:2 quotes it elsewhere in the canon (pedagogical cross-reference only, out of curriculum scope). |
| Matthew 15:8-9 | External vs. internal religion | — | Isaiah 29:13 | High: central proof-text for Righteousness-Exceeding-the-Pharisees and the শেংবা/অসেংবা (ritual-purity vs. heart-holiness) distinction flagged at Matthew 5:8. |
| Matthew 15:24 | Mission priority: “lost sheep of Israel” | — | Ezekiel 34:1-16 (shepherd/lost-sheep motif, allusion) | Medium: parallels Romans 1:16’s “to the Jew first and also to the Greek” — teach the Israel-first-then-nations pattern consistently across both curricula. |
Chapter 16 — Peter’s Confession, the Church, First Passion Prediction
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 16:16 | Messianic/Sonship confession | Peter | Climactic confession, no single OT citation | Critical (reuse messiah/son_of_god terms); this confession and Romans 10:9’s confession are both flagged for verbatim cross-document consistency by the baseline, though their content differs — teach both as expressions of one confessional pattern. |
| Matthew 16:19 | Keys of the kingdom | — | Isaiah 22:22 (allusion, “the key of the house of David… he shall open, and none shall shut”) | High: Davidic-steward imagery undergirds “keys” language, tying the Son-of-David theme to the Church-and-Church-Discipline doctrine. |
| Matthew 16:27 | Recompense at the Son of Man’s coming | — | Psalm 62:12; Proverbs 24:12 (allusion) | Medium; must not be read as works-salvation — recompense reveals, rather than earns, standing (teach consistently with Romans 2:6’s use of the same pattern). |
Chapter 17 — The Transfiguration
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 17:5 | Divine sonship declaration; prophet-like-Moses | The Father | Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 42:1 (reuse, 3:17); Deuteronomy 18:15 (allusion, “listen to him”) | Critical: adds Mosaic-prophet typology to the Sonship declaration; teach Jesus as the definitive Prophet who fulfills and surpasses Moses. |
| Matthew 17:11-12 | Elijah typology fulfilled in John | Elijah, John the Baptist | Malachi 4:5-6 | High: completes the Elijah-John thread begun at 11:10,14. |
Chapter 18 — Church Discipline, Forgiveness
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 18:16 | Witness procedure for church discipline | Moses | Deuteronomy 19:15 | High: direct legal-procedural quotation underlying the Church-Discipline doctrine. |
| Matthew 18:22 | Unlimited forgiveness | — | Rhetorical inversion of Genesis 4:24 (Lamech’s sevenfold vengeance) | Medium: worth noting as a deliberate reversal for teaching richness. |
Chapter 19 — Marriage, Rich Young Man, Eternal Life
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 19:4-5 | Marriage as creation ordinance | Adam, Eve | Genesis 1:27; 2:24 | High: creation-order typology; a useful (though argumentatively distinct) bridge to Romans 1:20’s creation-reveals-God theme. |
| Matthew 19:18-19 | Decalogue plus love command | Moses | Exodus 20:12-16; Leviticus 19:18 | Critical: Leviticus 19:18 recurs at 22:39 and, cross-curriculum, at Romans 13:9 — mandatory identical rendering, Section D. |
Chapter 20 — Workers in the Vineyard, Ransom Saying
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 20:28 | Ransom / substitutionary atonement | Suffering Servant | Isaiah 53:10-12 (allusion: “makes many righteous,” “bore the sin of many,” “poured out his life”) | Critical: the single most important cross-curriculum atonement-typology link. Directly parallels Romans 5:19 (“by one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous”) and Romans 4:25 (“delivered up for our trespasses”). Teach as one unified biblical-theological thread — the Isaiah 53 Servant — underlying both Matthew’s ransom saying and Romans’ justification argument. |
Chapter 21 — Triumphal Entry, Temple Cleansing, Judgment Parables
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 21:5 | Humble, riding king | — | Zechariah 9:9; Isaiah 62:11 | Critical: messianic kingship fulfilled in humility, not conquest; ties Son-of-David/kingship doctrine to the cross, not to a Pakhangba-style conquest-royal ideology. |
| Matthew 21:9,15-16 | Hosanna acclamation | — | Psalm 118:25-26; Psalm 8:2 | High: Psalm 118:26 recurs at 23:39 as a still-future acclamation at the Second Coming — teach as a deliberate bookend (rejected now, acclaimed at the parousia). |
| Matthew 21:13 | Temple’s true purpose | — | Isaiah 56:7; Jeremiah 7:11 | High: “a house of prayer for all nations” (Isaiah 56:7) anticipates Gentile inclusion, tying the Temple text directly to the Great Commission doctrine. |
| Matthew 21:33-41 | Vineyard parable / Israel’s unfaithfulness | Tenants | Isaiah 5:1-2,7 (Song of the Vineyard) | Critical: directly parallels Romans 11’s olive-tree imagery of Israel as God’s cultivated people; teach both as complementary pictures of covenant unfaithfulness and God’s continuing purpose, not contradictory ones. |
| Matthew 21:42 | The rejected cornerstone | — | Psalm 118:22-23 | Critical: this exact text is quoted again (combined with Isaiah 8:14 and 28:16) at Romans 9:33 regarding the “stumbling stone.” Mandatory identical rendering, Section D; cross-reference the Matthew and Romans lessons explicitly. |
Chapter 22 — Wedding Banquet, Caesar, Greatest Commandment, Resurrection Debate
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 22:24 | Levirate marriage | Moses | Deuteronomy 25:5-6 | Medium. |
| Matthew 22:32 | Resurrection proof from Torah | Abraham, Isaac, Jacob | Exodus 3:6 | High: God’s covenant faithfulness to the patriarchs implies resurrection hope. Romans 4 uses the same patriarchs for a different doctrinal payload (justification by faith); do not conflate the two arguments. |
| Matthew 22:37,39 | The Great Commandment | Moses | Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18 | Critical: both texts are quoted identically at Romans 13:9-10 in Paul’s “love fulfills the law” argument. Mandatory rendering-consistency rule, Section D. |
| Matthew 22:44 | Messiah greater than David | David | Psalm 110:1 | Critical: David’s own psalm testifies the Messiah is David’s “Lord,” resolving the Son-of-David tension (fully human descendant, yet divine Lord); teach alongside Romans 1:3-4’s parallel two-stage (flesh/Spirit) Christology. |
Chapter 23 — Woes against Scribes and Pharisees
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 23:35 | Righteous blood, Abel to Zechariah | Abel, Zechariah | Genesis 4:8-10; 2 Chronicles 24:20-22 | Medium: canonical first-to-last bookends (Hebrew canon order) marking persistent rejection of God’s messengers. |
| Matthew 23:37-39 | Lament over Jerusalem; future acclamation | — | Psalm 118:26 (reuse from 21:9) | High: bookends present rejection with future acclamation at the parousia. |
Chapter 24 — The Olivet Discourse
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 24:15 | Abomination of desolation | Daniel | Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 | Critical: teach as a definite, historically anchored yet also eschatologically climactic event, not a vague cyclical catastrophe pattern. |
| Matthew 24:29 | Cosmic judgment signs | — | Isaiah 13:10; 34:4 | High: stock “Day of the LORD” imagery. |
| Matthew 24:30 | The Son of Man’s coming | — | Daniel 7:13-14; Zechariah 12:10-12 | Critical: the definitive Son-of-Man/parousia text; render consistently with the established মীওইগী মচানুপা and ক্রিস্তোগী অমুক লাক্লগনি terms. |
| Matthew 24:31 | Gathering the elect | — | Deuteronomy 30:4; Zechariah 2:6 (allusion) | High: reuse baseline election term তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা. |
Chapter 25 — Parables of Judgment
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 25:1-13 | Bridegroom / wedding banquet | — | Isaiah 62:5; Hosea 2:19-20 (covenant-marriage imagery, allusion) | Medium. |
| Matthew 25:31-46 | Final judgment, sheep and goats | — | Ezekiel 34:17-22 (shepherd separating flock, allusion); Daniel 7:13-14 (Son of Man enthroned) | Critical: the judgment climax; a personal divine tribunal, not an impersonal karmic mechanism. |
Chapter 26 — Last Supper, Gethsemane, Betrayal, Trial
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 26:26-29 | Last Supper / New Covenant blood | Moses, Jeremiah | Exodus 12 (Passover, typology); Exodus 24:8 (covenant-blood formula); Jeremiah 31:31-34 (New Covenant) | Critical: “blood of the covenant” directly echoes Exodus 24:8 and invokes Jeremiah 31:31; reuse baseline covenant term ৱারেপ্পা exactly. A foundational old-covenant/new-covenant hinge; conceptually resonant with (though not textually identical to) Romans 9-11’s covenant-fulfillment argument. |
| Matthew 26:31 | Shepherd struck, sheep scattered | — | Zechariah 13:7 | High: predicts the disciples’ abandonment; part of the Passion’s fulfillment pattern. |
| Matthew 26:64 | Son of Man enthroned | — | Daniel 7:13; Psalm 110:1 (combined) | Critical: Jesus’s own testimony under oath, combining the Gospel’s two central Christological OT texts. |
Chapter 27 — Crucifixion and Death
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 27:9-10 | Thirty pieces of silver, potter’s field | Jeremiah, Zechariah | Zechariah 11:12-13; Jeremiah 19:1-13; 32:6-9 | High: a composite citation attributed to Jeremiah — a known interpretive puzzle; use a translator note acknowledging the composite source rather than treating it as a single-source citation error. |
| Matthew 27:12-14 | Silent before accusers | Suffering Servant | Isaiah 53:7 | Critical: completes the Isaiah 53 Servant typology begun at 8:17 and 12:18-21. |
| Matthew 27:35 | Divided garments | — | Psalm 22:18 | Critical: part of the extended Psalm 22 crucifixion cluster. |
| Matthew 27:39,43 | Mocking; “let God deliver him” | — | Psalm 22:7-8 | Critical (cluster). |
| Matthew 27:46 | Cry of dereliction | — | Psalm 22:1 | Critical: must be rendered as a genuine, anguished cry within orthodox Trinitarian bounds (the Son truly bearing sin’s judgment, not a fracture within the Godhead); flag for theologian review given its doctrinal weight and pastoral sensitivity. |
| Matthew 27:51 | Torn temple curtain | — | Echoes Exodus 26:31-33 (the veil’s original function); theological fulfillment, not a quotation | High: direct access to God secured; conceptually resonant with Romans 5:1-2’s “access… into this grace.” |
Chapter 28 — Resurrection and the Great Commission
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew 28:18 | All authority given | — | Daniel 7:14 (allusion, “dominion and glory and a kingdom… given to him”) | Critical: direct fulfillment of Daniel 7’s Son-of-Man enthronement, now realized in the risen Christ’s own words. |
| Matthew 28:19-20 | Great Commission / blessing to all nations | Abraham (implicit) | Genesis 12:3; 22:18 (“all nations/families of the earth blessed”) | Critical: closes the inclusio opened at 1:1’s “son of Abraham.” The single strongest Matthew-Romans macro-parallel in the book — directly parallel to Romans 4’s Abraham-as-father-of-all-who-believe argument and Romans 15:8-12’s Gentile-inclusion catena. |
PART B — Messianic Typology Summary
| Typological Pattern | OT Root | Matthew Fulfillment | Cross-Curriculum (Romans) Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| True Israel / new Exodus | Hosea 11:1; Exodus narrative | Matthew 2:15; 4:1-11 (wilderness testing) | Romans 9-11’s Israel argument shares the Israel-as-God’s-son category, applied corporately there and typologically-individually here; do not conflate the two applications. |
| New Moses / greater Lawgiver | Deuteronomy 18:15-19 | Matthew 5-7 (mountain discourse); 17:5 | Romans’s law/righteousness argument (baseline law entry) presupposes the same Mosaic law Matthew shows Jesus fulfilling. |
| Son of David, humble king | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 110:1 | Matthew 1:1; 21:5; 22:44 | Romans 1:3-4’s “descended from David… declared Son of God” is the same two-stage Davidic-then-divine Christology. |
| Suffering Servant | Isaiah 42:1-4; 53:1-12 | Matthew 8:17; 12:18-21; 20:28; 27:12-14 | Romans 4:25; 5:19; 10:16 draw on the identical Servant Song material for the doctrines of justification and atonement. |
| Passover Lamb / covenant blood | Exodus 12; 24:8 | Matthew 26:17-29 | Conceptually undergirds the atonement categories Romans 3:24-25 discusses using sacrificial/propitiation language (not a direct textual quotation match). |
| Jonah’s sign (death/burial/resurrection) | Jonah 1:17; 2:1-10 | Matthew 12:40 | Romans’s resurrection doctrine (baseline Critical term) shares the same “raised on the third day” pattern, though Romans does not cite Jonah directly. |
| Daniel’s Son of Man, enthroned with dominion | Daniel 7:13-14 | Matthew 24:30; 26:64; 28:18 | Romans does not cite Daniel 7 directly, but its Lordship-of-Christ doctrine (Romans 10:9; 14:9) describes the same universal, enthroned authority. |
| Abrahamic blessing to all nations | Genesis 12:3; 22:18 | Matthew 1:1; 28:19 | Romans 4:16-17 (Abraham as father of all who believe) and Romans 15:8-12 (Gentile-inclusion catena) draw on the identical Abrahamic promise. |
PART C — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum: Shared Old Testament Quotations
| OT Text | Matthew Occurrence(s) | Romans Occurrence(s) | Doctrinal Function in Each | Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Psalm 118:22-23 | Matthew 21:42; 21:9/23:39 (v.26) | Romans 9:33 (combined with Isaiah 8:14; 28:16) | Matthew: the rejected stone becomes the cornerstone (Christ’s own vindication). Romans: the same stone becomes a stumbling block for unbelieving Israel. | Render Psalm 118:22-23 (and v.26) identically in both Language Packages; cross-reference the two lessons explicitly so learners see one Scripture serving two connected purposes. |
| Isaiah 6:9-10 | Matthew 13:14-15 | Romans 11:8 (combined with Deuteronomy 29:4; Isaiah 29:10) | Both describe partial, purposive hardening, not final divine rejection. | Render identically; teach the “partial and purposive” qualification consistently in both curricula (cf. Romans 11:11-12, 25-26). |
| Leviticus 19:18 | Matthew 5:43; 19:19; 22:39 | Romans 13:9 | Both curricula use “love your neighbor as yourself” as the summary of the law’s relational demand. | Render identically in every occurrence across both Language Packages. |
| Deuteronomy 6:5 | Matthew 22:37 | (Thematic background to Romans 12:1’s whole-life devotion; not directly quoted in Romans) | Whole-hearted covenant love as the first commandment. | No direct quotation-consistency rule required, but teach the shared root behind both texts. |
| Exodus 20 commandments (murder, adultery, steal) | Matthew 5:21,27; 19:18 | Romans 13:9 | Both use the Decalogue as a summary of relational obligation fulfilled in love. | Render the commandment list identically wherever it recurs within Matthew; align with any future Romans-curriculum rendering. |
| Isaiah 53 (Suffering Servant, esp. 53:4,7,10-12) | Matthew 8:17; 12:18-21 (Isaiah 42 companion song); 20:28; 27:12-14 | Romans 4:25; 5:19; 10:16 (quoting Isaiah 53:1) | Matthew narrates the Servant’s identity and death; Romans draws the doctrinal conclusion (justification, atonement). | Treat as one unified Servant-typology thread across both curricula; cross-reference lessons explicitly. |
| Hosea (11:1 and 1:10/2:23) | Matthew 2:15 (Hosea 11:1) | Romans 9:25-26 (Hosea 1:10; 2:23) | Matthew: Israel/Messiah recapitulation. Romans: Gentile inclusion into God’s people. | Same prophetic book, different verses and different doctrinal use — flag a translator note in both curricula to prevent conflation. |
| Genesis 12:3; 22:18 (Abrahamic blessing to nations) | Matthew 1:1; 28:19 | Romans 4:16-17; 15:8-12 | Both curricula root Gentile inclusion in the Abrahamic promise. | Teach as the same covenant promise; no single fixed quotation-string required, but the theological link should be made explicit in both curricula’s teaching notes. |
| Psalm 110:1 | Matthew 22:44; 26:64 | (Not directly quoted in Romans; thematically undergirds Romans 10:9’s Lordship confession) | Both affirm Christ’s supreme, enthroned Lordship. | No quotation-consistency rule required; note the thematic link for teaching continuity. |
| ”To the Jew first” pattern | Matthew 15:24 | Romans 1:16 | Both affirm a consistent Israel-then-nations missionary/salvation-historical pattern. | Teach consistently across curricula; no direct shared quotation, but a shared salvation-historical principle. |
PART D — Mandatory Rendering-Consistency Rules
- Psalm 118:22-23 / 118:26 — Render identically wherever quoted (Matthew 21:9,42; 23:39; and any future Romans 9:33 material). The “cornerstone” image must use the same Manipuri lexeme in both curricula.
- Isaiah 6:9-10 — Render identically at Matthew 13:14-15 and any Romans 11:8 material; the accompanying doctrinal note (“partial, purposive hardening, not final rejection”) must appear in both curricula’s teacher notes.
- Leviticus 19:18 / Deuteronomy 6:5 — Render identically at every Matthean occurrence (5:43; 19:19; 22:37,39) and align with any Romans 13:9-10 rendering.
- Isaiah 53 Servant material — Render 53:4, 53:7, and the 53:10-12 allusion behind Matthew 20:28 with a single consistent register and vocabulary set across all three Matthean occurrences (8:17; 20:28; 27:12-14), and note the shared root with Romans 4:25; 5:19; 10:16 in teacher-facing material.
- Hosea 11:1 vs. Hosea 1:10/2:23 — Never allow translators to default to a single “Hosea quotation” memory entry; these are two distinct verses serving two distinct doctrines (Israel/Messiah recapitulation in Matthew; Gentile inclusion in Romans) and must be tracked as separate translation-memory entries.
- Genesis 12:3 / 22:18 (Abrahamic blessing formula) — Use a single stable Manipuri rendering of “all nations/families of the earth” wherever this promise is invoked (Matthew 1:1 background; 28:19; any Romans 4 or 15:8-12 material), consistent with the baseline’s established গentiles term অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ where “nations” appears.
- Daniel 7:13-14 — Render identically at Matthew 24:30; 26:64; 28:18, since all three are the same underlying vision applied at three narrative moments (prophetic anticipation, trial testimony, resurrection commission).
- Zechariah 9:9 — Render identically wherever cited or referenced (21:5); do not let translation drift introduce conquest-king connotations foreign to the text’s deliberate humility emphasis.
- Jeremiah 31:31-34 / Exodus 24:8 (covenant-blood formula) — Render Matthew 26:28’s “blood of the covenant” using the baseline covenant term ৱারেপ্পা exactly; this is a Critical-risk term requiring theologian review at this occurrence.
- Psalm 22 cluster (vv.1,7-8,18) — Render as a recognizable unified cluster across Matthew 27:35,39,43,46, preserving the psalm’s own internal echoes so a Manipuri reader can perceive the crucifixion as this psalm’s fulfillment, not four unrelated citations.
