Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Thessalonians (Full Book) | English → Manipuri
Method and Governing Constraints
This analysis follows the Koine Greek text of 2 Thessalonians chapter by chapter, treating the core passage (2:1-12) verse-by-verse and every other chapter section-by-section for load-bearing theological vocabulary.
Governing rule: any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json for Manipuri MUST be reused exactly, with no new coinage. New terms required by 2 Thessalonians’ distinctive doctrines (the Day of the Lord, the man of lawlessness, perseverance under persecution, God’s righteous judgment, standing firm in the traditions) are proposed here in the same descriptive-compound style the baseline package established (e.g. মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং for “grace”), and are marked provisional — pending theologian/native-speaker confirmation exactly as the baseline itself did for terms like ৱারেপ্পা (“covenant”) and পীথোকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (“imputed righteousness”).
Manipuri’s live dual religious landscape (Sanamahism — Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai, Lai Haraoba, the maibi priestess; and Gaudiya Vaishnavism — Krishna-Radha devotion, the Ras Lila) is engaged throughout, per baseline convention, as it bears on 2 Thessalonians’ eschatological and adversarial-figure material — territory the Romans package did not need to cover in depth.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | parousia | episynagōgē |
| Literal meaning | ”a being-alongside”; arrival, presence | ”a gathering-together-upon” |
| Semantic range | A ruler’s ceremonial arrival/visit; personal presence; in NT eschatology, Christ’s second coming | Assembling, collecting together |
| English variants | ”coming,” “advent,” “arrival" | "gathering,” “being gathered together” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The bodily, visible, future return of Christ — the event the whole chapter defends against premature claims that it has already occurred | The church’s being gathered to Christ at his return (cf. 1 Thess 4:16-17) |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | CRITICAL. Propose মপু ইবুংগোগী লাকপা (Mapu Ibungogi lakpa, “the Lord’s coming”) — provisional. Reuses established মপু ইবুংগো (“Lord,” Critical, baseline). Must be taught as a single, unique, bodily historical return, categorically distinct from Krishna’s repeated avatar-descents enacted in the Ras Lila tradition (cf. baseline’s অবতার prohibition for “incarnation”). Do NOT let “coming” be read as one more cyclical divine appearance. | Propose পুন্না খোম্জিনবা (punna khomjinba, “gathering together”) — Medium, provisional. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | hēmera tou Kyriou | saleuthēnai | enestēken |
| Literal meaning | ”day of the Lord" | "to be shaken/rocked” (as by an earthquake) | “has stood-in/has become present” |
| Semantic range | OT prophetic day of divine visitation, judgment, and vindication; NT: the eschatological day of Christ’s return and judgment | Destabilized, thrown into confusion | Already arrived, currently present |
| English variants | ”Day of the Lord,” “that Day" | "shaken,” “unsettled,” “alarmed" | "is here,” “has come,” “is at hand” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The central subject of the whole passage: false teachers claimed this Day had already arrived; Paul corrects this with two prerequisite events (apostasy, revealing of the lawless one) | Believers’ minds must not be destabilized by a false claim about the Day | The false claim being corrected: “is already present,” not merely “is imminent” |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | CRITICAL. (Mapu Ibungogi numit, “the Lord’s Day”) — provisional, built on established মপু ইবুংগো. Must be explicitly distinguished in teaching notes from: (a) any Vaishnava eschatological expectation tied to the end of the Kali Yuga cycle and a further avatar-descent, and (b) any cyclical Sanamahi cosmological renewal framework. This Day is a singular, linear, once-for-all historical event of judgment and vindication, not a recurring or cyclical cosmic turning point. | High. Propose নিংথিনা হোংহনবা (ningthina honghanba, “to be greatly shaken/destabilized”) — descriptive, Medium-High risk of mere imprecision, no cultural-collision risk. | Handled contextually; no separate glossary entry needed — render with a simple perfect/completive verb form (“has already come”). |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | apostasia | ho anthrōpos tēs anomias | ho huios tēs apōleias | apokalyphthē |
| Literal meaning | ”a standing-away-from”; defection, revolt | ”the man of lawlessness" | "the son of destruction/ruin" | "be uncovered, unveiled” |
| Semantic range | Political/military rebellion; religious falling-away from the true faith | A person characterized by, and embodying, ἀνομία (lawlessness) | A Hebraic idiom: one wholly characterized by, destined for, ἀπώλεια (destruction/ruin) — cf. Judas in John 17:12 | Disclosure of something previously hidden; used elsewhere of God’s or Christ’s self-disclosure |
| Contextual theological meaning | A definite, future, large-scale rebellion against God/the faith that must precede the Day of the Lord | The chief eschatological human agent of opposition to God, later called “the lawless one” (v.8) and widely identified in Christian tradition with “antichrist” | Underscores his certain, ultimate destruction — deliberately mirrored against the true “Son of God” | This figure’s appearance is a disclosure/unveiling, deliberately echoing the language used of Christ’s own “revealing” (ἐπιφάνεια, v.8) |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. Propose থাজবাদগী হেনগৎপা (thajabadagi hengatpa, “rebellion away from the faith”) — provisional, new coinage. | CRITICAL. Propose য়াথাং য়াদবা মীওই (yathang yadaba miwoi, “lawless man”), built on established য়াথাং (“law,” Medium, baseline). See doctrine note below — this is the single highest-collision-risk new figure in the curriculum. | CRITICAL. Propose অমাংবগী মচানুপা (amangbagi machanupa, “son of destruction/ruin”) — deliberately structured to parallel and contrast with established তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (“Son of God,” Critical, baseline). This structural parallel should be taught explicitly: a counterfeit son set against the true Son. | High. Render with the established prophecy-root ফোংদোকপা (cf. baseline ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল, “prophecy”), context-marked “উকহনবা” (revealed/shown) — provisional. |
DOCTRINAL RISK NOTE — Man of Lawlessness (Critical, grounded reason): Manipuri Vaishnava devotional narrative (expressed liturgically through the Ras Lila tradition) is structured around a recurring pattern of a demonic self-exalting adversary (e.g., Kamsa opposing the infant/youth Krishna, Hiranyakashipu opposing Narasimha) who is destroyed by a divine avatar’s appearing. A Meitei reader coming from this background risks unconsciously assimilating “the man of lawlessness is destroyed at the Lord’s coming” into this familiar avatar-versus-demon narrative pattern — treating Christ’s return as one more avatar intervention in a recurring mythic cycle rather than the single, unrepeatable, historical consummation of all things. This must be named and taught explicitly, not merely translated around.
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | antikeimenos / hyperairomenos | sebasma | naos | apodeiknynta |
| Literal meaning | ”the one opposing” / “the one exalting himself over" | "an object of reverence/worship" | "sanctuary, inner shrine” (distinct from ἱερόν, the wider temple precinct) | “demonstrating, exhibiting proof” |
| Semantic range | Active, personal, ongoing opposition to God; self-elevation above every rival | Any venerated object, image, or being | The dwelling-place of deity; used of the Jerusalem Temple’s inner sanctuary and, metaphorically, of the church as God’s temple (1 Cor 3:16) | Public self-attestation, staged demonstration |
| Contextual theological meaning | The lawless one’s defining acts: opposition and self-deification | He displaces every rival object of worship | He enthrones himself in God’s own dwelling-place — the ultimate act of usurping blasphemy | He stages his divine claim publicly, as a performed proof |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. Propose মথন্তা থোকপা অমসুং মশা চাউহনবা (mathanta thokpa amasung masha chauhanba, “opposing and self-exalting”) — provisional. | High. Propose খুরুমবা মখোল (khurumba makhol, “an object of reverence”) — provisional; must not default to a term implying a legitimate deity-image, given the density of both Vaishnava murti/image veneration and Umang Lai object-veneration in Meitei religious life. | High — see doctrinal note below. Propose তেংবাং মপুগী লাইশাং (Tengban Mapugi laishang, “God’s sanctuary/shrine”) — provisional. | Medium. Descriptive rendering, e.g. মশা তেংবাং মপু ওইবা উৎপা (masha Tengban Mapu oiba utpa, “showing/proving himself to be God”) — Low collision risk once the “God” term itself is protected (see below). |
DOCTRINAL RISK NOTE — Temple of God (High, grounded reason): The baseline package already forbids মন্দির (Vaishnava temple) as a substitute for “church,” and forbids উমাং লাই থাবা (the Umang Lai sacred grove shrine) likewise. ναός in 2:4 requires its own careful handling distinct from both: it names either the (then-standing, later-destroyed) Jerusalem Temple or, by extension, God’s dwelling among his people. The proposed তেংবাং মপুগী লাইশাং must be explicitly taught as neither a Vaishnava মন্দির nor a Sanamahi sacred-grove শাং, to prevent the passage being heard as “the lawless one seizes a familiar physical shrine” rather than its actual claim: total usurpation of the place and rights that belong to God alone. Flagged for human theologian review given the interpretive complexity (literal end-times temple vs. symbolic reading) layered atop the cultural-collision risk.
| Field | τὸ κατέχον (to katechon) | καιρός (kairos) |
|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | to katechon | kairos |
| Literal meaning | ”the restraining thing” (neuter participle) | “appointed/opportune time” (distinct from χρόνος, mere clock-time) |
| Semantic range | Something that holds back, restrains, delays | A divinely-appointed, qualitatively significant moment |
| English variants | ”what restrains,” “the restraining power/force" | "his own time,” “the proper season” |
| Contextual theological meaning | An unnamed restraining influence (widely debated in the history of interpretation — governing authority, the Holy Spirit’s restraining presence, or a divine decree) that currently holds back the full manifestation of the lawless one | The lawless one’s appearing is set within God’s sovereign timetable, not accidental or uncontrolled |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. Propose থিংজিনবা (thingjinba, “the one/thing that holds back”) — provisional, deliberately left as a neutral descriptive term (not identified with any specific agent in the translation itself, matching the deliberate ambiguity of the Greek). Curriculum notes must state plainly that this restrainer is NOT to be identified with any Sanamahi guardian-spirit function (the Umang Lai are traditionally understood as protective territorial deities) nor with a maibi’s ritual gate-keeping role in Lai Haraoba; whatever else it denotes, it operates entirely under God’s sovereign control, per v.6’s “his own kairos.” | Medium. Render with established providence-adjacent vocabulary; reuse baseline’s তেংবাং মপুগী থৌরাং (“providence”) register rather than a fate-flavored term — never ৱাইফম. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | mystērion tēs anomias | energeitai | ho katechōn |
| Literal meaning | ”the mystery/secret of lawlessness" | "is operating, is at work" | "the one who restrains” (masculine personal participle, contrast with neuter τὸ κατέχον in v.6) |
| Semantic range | A hidden divine or spiritual reality not yet fully disclosed | Active, ongoing operative power | A personal restraining agent |
| Contextual theological meaning | Lawlessness is already secretly, presently active in the world, though not yet unveiled in its full, personified form | Its present covert operation contrasts with the coming public, unveiled operation of the lawless one | The shift from neuter (v.6) to masculine (v.7) has fueled much debate about whether a personal agent (e.g., the Holy Spirit, or a governing figure) is intended |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. Propose য়াথাং য়াদবগী লোৎলবা ৱারী (yathang yadabagi lotlaba wari, “the hidden/secret matter of lawlessness”) — provisional new coinage; no direct baseline “mystery” term exists yet in the Romans package, so this curriculum should coordinate with any future Romans “mystery” entries (e.g. Rom 11:25) for consistency. | Medium. Reuse baseline compound root পাংথোক-থেংনবা (“power/working,” cf. power_of_god) in verbal form: পাংথোকই (pangthokei, “is working/operating”). | Same rendering as τὸ κατέχον (v.6) with gender/agency left equally open in Manipuri, since Manipuri does not grammatically mark this distinction — flag for theologian note explaining the Greek nuance is lost in translation and must be supplied in commentary, not forced into the text. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | ho anomos | anelei | katargēsei | epiphaneia |
| Literal meaning | ”the lawless one" | "will destroy/slay" | "will nullify, render inoperative" | "a shining-forth, manifestation” |
| Semantic range | Shorthand title for the man of lawlessness | Kill, do away with, by violence or decree | Abolish, bring to nothing, render powerless | Used of a ruler’s state visit or a god’s manifestation; NT: Christ’s appearing, both at his first coming (2 Tim 1:10) and his second (here, and Titus 2:13) |
| Contextual theological meaning | Effortless, total, verbal destruction of the lawless one — “the breath of his mouth” recalls Isaiah 11:4’s messianic judgment | Christ’s return itself, in its very appearing, is what abolishes the lawless one — no cosmic battle is needed | The double phrase “epiphany of his parousia” stacks two manifestation-words for emphasis | |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | Same as য়াথাং য়াদবা মীওই / ᱬ shorthand form (see v.3) — Critical. | High. Render with a strong destruction verb, e.g. হাৎহনবা (hathanba, “cause to be killed”) or মাংহনবা (manghanba, “cause to vanish/perish”) — provisional; must convey effortless divine authority, not a contest of powers. | Medium. Propose মাংহনবা (manghanba, “nullify, cause to vanish”) — provisional, same root as ἀνελεῖ rendering; theologian should confirm whether distinct Manipuri verbs are preferable for the two Greek verbs. | High. Reuse established ফোংদোকপা root (prophecy/revealing) combined with মপু ইবুংগোগী লাকপা (“the Lord’s coming,” see v.1) — e.g., মপু ইবুংগোগী লাকপগী ফোংদোকপা. Must be taught, again, as unique and singular — deliberately NOT to be rendered with any language resembling repeated avatar-manifestation. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | energeia / dynamis | sēmeia kai terata pseudous | apatē | adikia | apollymenois |
| Literal meaning | ”working” / “power, ability" | "signs and wonders of falsehood" | "deceit, trickery" | "unrighteousness, injustice" | "those being destroyed/perishing” |
| Semantic range | Active operative power (same root as ἐνεργεῖται, v.7); δύναμις elsewhere names God’s own saving power (Rom 1:16) | Miraculous phenomena; elsewhere used of genuine apostolic/divine signs — here explicitly counterfeit (“of falsehood”) | Fraud, deception for gain | Wrongdoing, the opposite of δικαιοσύνη (“righteousness”) — a related but distinct term from ἁμαρτία (“sin”) | Those on the path to final destruction/ruin (present participle, ongoing state) |
| Contextual theological meaning | The lawless one’s power is derivative and Satanic, not self-generated or divine — a deliberate, false mirror of God’s own power | Real supernatural phenomena, but deceptive in origin and purpose — a direct counterfeit of true Spirit-given signs | The whole operation is fraudulent, aimed at those already perishing | Names the moral character of the deceived, without yet using ἁμαρτία | Describes their trajectory and present state — echoes 1:9’s “eternal destruction” |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. δύναμις here MUST be rendered with clear attribution to Satan, never with the baseline’s established God’s-power compound (তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা) without the Satanic qualifier explicit in the clause — propose সাতানগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা (Satan-gi pangthok-thengnaba). This is the one place in the curriculum where the “power” root must carry a negative referent; flag every occurrence for theologian review to guard against confusion with the Romans 1:16 usage. | CRITICAL. Propose লোনবা খুদম অমসুং আংকপা থবক (lonaba khudam amasung angba thabak, “false signs and wondrous works”) — provisional. Must be sharply distinguished from থাওয়াইগী খুদোল (“spiritual gifts,” baseline Medium) and, per baseline convention, from the ritual/oracular phenomena (শক্তি) attributed to a maibi in Lai Haraoba trance, and from miracle-claims embedded in Vaishnava devotional narrative. These are real supernatural phenomena but satanically-sourced counterfeits, not neutral “miracles” to be assessed on spectacle alone. | High. Propose অশোইবা (ashoiba, “deception”) — provisional. | Medium. Distinct from established পাপ (“sin,” baseline High); propose অচুম্বা নত্তবা (achumba nattaba, “not-righteousness/unrighteousness”), built on established অচুম্বা root. Theologian should confirm whether Romans-curriculum learners will track this distinction or whether a simplifying note is preferable. | High. Propose মাংবা (mangba, “perishing/being destroyed”) — provisional; must never be softened into a this-worldly “losing one’s way” sense, nor associated with cyclical rebirth. |
| Field | ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας | σωθῆναι (sōthēnai) | ἐνέργεια πλάνης | πιστεύσαντες (of a lie) | κριθῶσιν (krithōsin) | εὐδοκήσαντες (eudokēsantes) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | agapē tēs alētheias | sōthēnai | energeia planēs | pisteusantes | krithōsin | eudokēsantes |
| Literal meaning | ”the love of the truth" | "to be saved" | "a working of deception/error" | "having believed” (here, the lie) | “may be judged/condemned" | "having taken pleasure/delight in” |
| Semantic range | Genuine love for, and reception of, revealed truth | The standard NT salvation-vocabulary verb | πλάνη: wandering, error, deceit; ἐνέργεια: the same “working/operation” root as v.7,9 | The normal faith-verb πιστεύω, here used ironically of misplaced trust | Judicial condemnation, adverse verdict | Willing, pleasurable consent |
| Contextual theological meaning | Rejecting saving truth, by choice, is what opens the door to deception | The rejected alternative to being deceived — the passage’s whole point is that this deception has eternal consequences | A judicial, not arbitrary, divine act: God actively confirms those who have already rejected the truth in the self-deception they chose — a hardening/judgment-in-kind, not indiscriminate deceiving of the innocent | Deliberately ironic use of the “faith” verb-root for belief in a lie, underscoring that saving faith and this counterfeit “faith” are opposite objects of the same act of trust | Final judgment for unbelief and love of unrighteousness | Their condemnation rests on willing, pleasurable choice, not mere ignorance |
| Manipuri rendering & risk | High. Propose অচুম্বাগী নুংশিবা (achumbagi nungshiba, “love of the truth”) — provisional, built on established অচুম্বা root and general নুংশিবা (“love”). | Reuse established অহানবা root — verbal form অহানহনবা/সোইদোকপা context permitting; Critical per baseline salvation entry — never মোক্ষ. | CRITICAL. Propose অশোইবগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা (ashoibagi pangthok-thengnaba, “a working of deception”) — provisional. See doctrinal note below: this is the single most theologically delicate phrase in the passage. | Render with established থাজবা root but the clause must make unmistakably clear the object is a lie (ৱাফম, “the lie/falsehood”), e.g. ৱাফমদা থাজবা — flag High risk of the verb alone reading as ordinary saving faith if the object is dropped. | High. Propose ৱাযেংহনবা (wayenghanba, “to be judged”) — new coinage feeding into the “God’s Righteous Judgment” doctrine term (see Chapter 1 section below). | Medium. Propose অচুম্বা নত্তবদা নুংঙাইবা (achumba nattabada nungngaiba, “delighting in unrighteousness”) — provisional. |
DOCTRINAL RISK NOTE — “God sends a strong delusion” (Critical, grounded reason): This phrase is exceptionally vulnerable to two distinct misreadings in the Manipuri context. (1) Read through a fatalistic lens, it could collapse into ৱাইফম (impersonal fate) — precisely the term the baseline forbids for “election,” “calling,” and “providence.” (2) Read through the bhakti-devotional lens, “believing a lie” and being judged for it could be assimilated to a karma-style automatic cosmic consequence rather than a personal, judicial divine response to a specific, willful rejection of God’s own revealed truth. Teaching notes must state plainly: this is God’s righteous, judicial response — in kind — to a choice already freely made (v.10, “did not receive the love of the truth”), not an arbitrary or impersonal mechanism. This connects directly to the curriculum’s “God’s Righteous Judgment” doctrine (see Chapter 1) and must be flagged for human theologian review at every occurrence.
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Thanksgiving, Perseverance under Persecution, God’s Righteous Judgment
2 Thessalonians 1 introduces the letter’s thanksgiving (1:1-4), then moves directly into the doctrine of God’s righteous judgment against persecutors and the coming glory of Christ (1:5-12).
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χάρις (1:2) | charis | favor freely given | Unmerited favor | ”grace” | Standard epistolary greeting; God’s unmerited favor as the letter’s opening note | Reuse baseline exactly: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং — Critical (baseline) |
| εἰρήνη (1:2) | eirēnē | peace | Relational, covenantal peace | ”peace” | Peace with God through Christ, in the greeting formula | Reuse baseline exactly: ইনগবা — Medium (baseline) |
| πατήρ (1:1-2) | patēr | father | Personal, relational Father | ”Father” | God as Father, source of grace and peace with the Lord Jesus Christ | Reuse baseline exactly: ইপা — Critical (baseline) |
| πίστις (1:3-4) | pistis | trust, faith | Personal trust; here, “your faith grows exceedingly" | "faith” | The Thessalonians’ faith, actively growing amid persecution | Reuse baseline exactly: থাজবা — High (baseline) |
| ἀγάπη (1:3) | agapē | love | Self-giving love; here, mutual love “abounding” among believers | ”love,” “charity” | Love among believers as evidence of genuine faith | New — propose নুংশিবা (nungshiba) — Medium, no direct baseline equivalent; standard Meitei word for love, low collision risk but must be distinguished in teaching from bhakti-love (a devotee’s love toward Krishna) when this doctrine is later connected to “love of the truth” (2:10). |
| θλῖψις / διωγμός (1:4,6) | thlipsis / diōgmos | pressure/affliction; pursuit/persecution | Suffering under hostile pressure; official or social persecution | ”persecutions and afflictions,” “tribulations,” “trials” | The Thessalonians’ endurance of real, ongoing persecution — the doctrinal anchor for “Perseverance under Persecution” | New — propose নেংশিনবা (nengsinba, “persecution/oppression”) — High. Grounded reason: this doctrine must be taught as suffering for the faith, distinguished from any suffering framed as karmic consequence for past wrongdoing (a live interpretive category in Manipur’s Vaishnava-influenced popular thought) or as ritual ordeal endured for religious merit. |
| ὑπομονή (1:4) | hypomonē | remaining-under; endurance | Steadfast endurance under trial, not passive resignation | ”patience,” “endurance,” “perseverance” | The specific virtue commended: active, faith-fueled endurance, not fatalistic resignation | New — propose থেংনবা (thengnaba, “endurance/standing firm under pressure”) — High. Must be distinguished from resignation to ৱাইফম (fate); endurance here is confident hope in a certain future vindication, not stoic acceptance. |
| βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (1:5) | basileia tou theou | kingdom of God | God’s sovereign reign | ”kingdom of God” | Suffering now is evidence believers will be counted worthy of the kingdom | Reuse baseline exactly: তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক — Medium (baseline) |
| δίκαιον (1:5-6) / ἐκδίκησις (1:8) | dikaion / ekdikēsis | righteous / just; a repayment-in-kind, vengeance | Judicial rightness; punitive repayment matching the crime | ”just,” “fair” / “vengeance,” “retribution” | The core doctrinal claim of the chapter: it is just — a matter of God’s own righteous character — that he repay affliction to those who afflict, and relief to those afflicted | CRITICAL, new coinage. (Tengban Mapugi achumba wayengba, “God’s righteous judgment”) as the doctrine-level term, built on established Grounded risk reason: this must be taught as a personal, moral, forensic act of a holy God — not an impersonal karma-mechanism (a live and well-developed category in Manipuri Vaishnava-influenced popular thought, where wrongdoing generates automatic cosmic consequence apart from any personal divine decision). Flag every occurrence for human theologian review. For ἐκδίκησις specifically, propose সেয়ৎ পীবা (seyat piba, “repaying/giving back what is due”) — High. |
| ἀποκάλυψις (1:7) | apokalypsis | unveiling, revealing | Disclosure of what was hidden | ”revelation,” “revealing” | Christ’s future revealing “from heaven with his mighty angels” — the moment righteous judgment is executed | High. Reuse established prophecy-root ফোংদোকপা (baseline: ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল, “prophecy”) in the compound মপু জিসুগী ফোংদোকপা (“the revealing of the Lord Jesus”) — must be distinguished from a maibi’s oracular “revealing” in Lai Haraoba trance. |
| πυρὶ φλογός (1:7-8) | pyri phlogos | flame of fire | Judgment-fire imagery, echoing Isaiah/Daniel theophany language | ”flaming fire,” “blazing fire” | The visible, awesome manner of Christ’s judgment-coming | Medium. Descriptive, মৈ চমকপা (mei chamkaba, “burning/blazing fire”) — low collision risk as a natural-image term, but avoid staging language that could evoke Ras Lila’s own use of ceremonial fire/light imagery to evoke divine radiance (cf. baseline’s caution under “glory”). |
| ὄλεθρον αἰώνιον (1:9) | olethron aiōnion | everlasting ruin/destruction | Final, unending destruction, “away from the presence of the Lord" | "eternal destruction,” “everlasting ruin” | The final state of those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel — contrasted directly with “salvation” | CRITICAL, new coinage. Propose লৌশিং মাংবা (loising mangba, “eternal destruction/ruin”) — must never be rendered in any way suggesting dissolution into, or absorption by, an impersonal ultimate reality (a live risk given the Vaishnava moksha-adjacent conceptual field the baseline already flags for “salvation”). This is conscious, personal, unending separation from God’s presence, not extinction or merger. |
| δόξα (1:9-10,12) | doxa | glory | God’s/Christ’s radiant honor and presence | ”glory” | Christ’s glorious appearing; believers glorifying and being glorified in him | Reuse baseline exactly: মতিক চাউবা — High (baseline) |
| ὑπακούω τῷ εὑαγγελίῳ (1:8) | hypakouō tō euangeliō | to obey the gospel | Faith-responsive obedience to the good news | ”obey the gospel” | Judgment falls on those who do not know God AND do not obey the gospel — two linked, not separate, failures | Reuse baseline exactly: থাজবগী ইনবা (obedience_of_faith) combined with established নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel) — High (baseline) |
| κλῆσις (1:11) | klēsis | calling | God’s summons | ”calling” | Paul prays they be counted worthy of “this calling” | Reuse baseline exactly: কৌবগী থৌদাং — High (baseline) |
| ἔργον πίστεως / δύναμις (1:11) | ergon pisteōs / dynamis | work of faith / power | Faith-produced action; God’s own power | ”work of faith,” “power” | God fulfilling every good purpose and faith-work “by his power” (here, God’s own, unqualified) | Reuse established থাজবা and, for δύναμις here (God’s own power, not Satan’s, contrast with 2:9), reuse baseline তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা (power_of_god) — High (baseline); flag the contrast with 2:9’s Satanic δύναμις for teaching purposes. |
Chapter 2 (verses 13-17) — Election, Sanctification, Comfort, and the Traditions
Verses 1-12 are treated fully in Part 1 above. Verses 13-17 shift from warning to reassurance and exhortation, introducing the “traditions” doctrine.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εἵλατο (2:13) | heilato | he chose | God’s sovereign choosing | ”chose,” “has chosen” | God’s choice of believers “from the beginning” for salvation | Reuse baseline exactly: তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (election) — High (baseline) |
| ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος (2:13) | hagiasmō pneumatos | in sanctification of the Spirit | The Spirit’s sanctifying work as the means of the choice’s outworking | ”sanctification by/through the Spirit” | Election and sanctification are joined, not opposed | Reuse baseline exactly: অসেংবা ওইহনবা (sanctification) + থাওয়াই অসেংবা (holy_spirit) — both High/Critical (baseline) |
| πίστις ἀληθείας (2:13) | pistis alētheias | belief of the truth | Genuine, saving trust that has truth as its object | ”belief in the truth,” “faith in the truth” | Contrasted directly and deliberately with 2:11-12’s “believing the lie” — the passage’s central positive/negative pairing | High. Reuse established থাজবা + new অচুম্বা (“truth,” see below) — flag for theologian review as the deliberate structural counterpart to the core passage’s climactic warning. |
| ἀλήθεια (2:13, 2:10) | alētheia | truth | That which is real/reliable, as opposed to deception | ”truth” | The saving truth of the gospel, as opposed to “the lie” (v.11) | High, new term sharing a root with an established baseline term. Propose অচুম্বা (achumba) as the standalone noun/adjective for “truth,” the same root morpheme used in established অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (“righteousness”) and অচুম্বা ওইহনবা (“justification”). Flag explicitly for theologian confirmation that this shared root does not blur “truth” and “righteousness” into a single undifferentiated concept for Manipuri readers — the two must remain distinguishable in context. |
| περιποίησιν δόξης (2:14) | peripoiēsin doxēs | obtaining of glory | Gaining/possessing glory as a future inheritance | ”obtain the glory,” “share in the glory” | Believers’ called destiny: to obtain Christ’s own glory | Reuse established মতিক চাউবা (glory) — High (baseline) |
| παράδοσις (2:15) | paradosis | that which is handed down | Authoritative apostolic teaching transmitted orally or in writing | ”traditions,” “teachings" | "Hold fast to the traditions you were taught, whether by word or by our letter” — the doctrinal anchor for “Standing Firm in the Traditions” | CRITICAL, new coinage — see doctrinal note below. Propose পাউদম তম্বীরকপা (paodam tambirakpa, “handed-down teaching/instruction”) — provisional. |
| στηρίξαι (2:17) | stērixai | to establish, make firm | Strengthening, confirming | ”establish,” “strengthen” | Prayer that God would comfort hearts and establish believers “in every good word and work” | Medium, new coinage. Propose চেৎহনবা (chetnhanba, “cause to stand firm/strengthen”) — provisional. |
| παρακαλέσαι (2:16-17) | parakalesai | to comfort/encourage | Consolation and exhortation | ”comfort,” “encourage” | Christ and the Father’s own comfort as the ground of steadfastness | Reuse baseline exactly: থাওয়াই পীবা (exhort) — Low (baseline) |
| ἐλπὶς ἀγαθή (2:16) | elpis agathē | good hope | Confident, well-founded expectation of future good | ”good hope” | The believer’s settled confidence, grounded in grace, contrasted with the false, destabilizing “hope” of 2:2’s premature Day-of-the-Lord claim | Medium, new coinage. Propose অফবা আশা (aphaba asha, “good hope”), building a standalone আশা (“hope”) entry — Medium risk, must be distinguished from worldly or fatalistic hope. |
DOCTRINAL RISK NOTE — “Standing Firm in the Traditions” (Critical, grounded reason): παράδοσις names authoritative apostolic teaching about Christ and the gospel, transmitted by Paul’s own preaching and letters. In the Manipuri context this word-category risks two distinct forms of assimilation: (1) into Sanamahi customary practice — ancestral custom (চাংলোন-type observance) passed down through clan (yumnak) and community memory and centered on Umang Lai worship and Lai Haraoba observance; and (2) into Vaishnava tradition — scripturally and ritually transmitted practice (śāstra-based teaching, guru-paramparā-style transmission, and temple/seva custom) surrounding Krishna devotion. “Standing firm in the traditions” must be taught as fidelity to a specific, closed, apostolic body of Christ-centered doctrine, not participation in an ongoing, living, communally-transmitted ritual-custom stream of the kind both indigenous traditions actively maintain. This doctrine must be flagged for human theologian review at every occurrence, given that it is also one of the five doctrines named for this curriculum.
Chapter 3 — Prayer, Idleness, Discipline, and Benediction
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ λόγος τοῦ Κυρίου (3:1) | ho logos tou Kyriou | the word of the Lord | The gospel message | ”the word of the Lord” | Prayer request that the gospel “run” and be glorified | Reuse established নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel) and মপুগী ৱারী (Lord’s word) as a compound — High (baseline gospel term applies) |
| πιστός (3:3) | pistos | faithful, trustworthy | Reliable, dependable character | ”faithful" | "The Lord is faithful” — God’s own faithful character as the ground of believers’ protection | Medium, new coinage. Propose থাজবা য়াবা (thajaba yaba, “trustworthy/faithful”), built on established থাজবা root. |
| ὁ πονηρός (3:3) | ho ponēros | the evil one | Either moral evil generally or, personified, Satan | ”the evil one,” “evil” | Believers guarded by the Lord “from the evil one” | Medium, new coinage. Propose ফত্তবা (phattaba, “the evil one/what is evil”) — flag: must be distinguished from any specific named evil spirit-figure in Sanamahi belief, kept general/personal per the biblical sense. |
| παραγγέλλομεν (3:4,6,10,12) | parangellomen | we command/charge | Apostolic authoritative instruction | ”command,” “charge,” “instruct” | Apostolic authority directing church practice — related to, but distinct from, the “traditions” of 2:15 | Medium, new coinage. Propose য়াথাং পীবা (yathang piba, “giving command/charge”), built on established য়াথাং (“law”) root — flag for theologian note distinguishing apostolic pastoral command from the Mosaic Law doctrine already covered under baseline’s “law” entry. |
| ἀτάκτως (3:6,11) | ataktōs | disorderly, out of rank | Undisciplined, not “in step,” idle/disruptive conduct | ”walking disorderly,” “idleness” | The specific pastoral problem addressed: believers who had stopped working, citing (likely) the nearness of the Day of the Lord | Low, new coinage. Propose য়াম্না তোকপা চৎনবা (yamna tokpa chatnaba, “disorderly conduct”) — no significant cultural-collision risk. |
| ἐργαζόμενοι (3:10-12) | ergazomenoi | working | Ordinary daily labor | ”work,” “labor" | "If anyone will not work, let him not eat” — a concrete ethical corrective | Low. Propose থবক তৌবা (thabak touba, “doing work”) — standard vocabulary. |
| περιεργαζομένους (3:11) | periergazomenous | being busybodies | Meddling in others’ affairs instead of one’s own work | ”busybodies” | The specific disorderly conduct in view: idleness manifesting as meddling | Low, new coinage. Propose অতোপ্পাগী থবকতা চাংশিনবা (atoppagi thabakta changsinba, “meddling in others’ work”) — no significant risk. |
| ἐγκακήσητε (3:13) | egkakēsēte | grow weary/lose heart | Discouragement leading to giving up | ”grow weary in doing good” | Positive exhortation balancing the correction of v.6-12 | Low, new coinage. Propose অফবা তৌবদা লু-হন্দবা (aphaba toubada lu-handaba, “growing tired/discouraged in doing good”) — no significant risk. |
| νουθετεῖτε ὡς ἀδελφόν (3:15) | noutheteite hōs adelphon | admonish as a brother | Corrective instruction within, not exclusion from, the family of faith | ”admonish/warn as a brother” | Church discipline framed relationally, not punitively | Reuse established থাওয়াই পীবা (exhort) — Low (baseline) |
| εἰρήνη (3:16) | eirēnē | peace | Relational peace | ”peace" | "The Lord of peace himself give you peace” — closing benediction echoing 1:2 | Reuse established ইনগবা (peace) — Medium (baseline) |
| ὁ ἀσπασμὸς τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί (3:17) | ho aspasmos tē emē cheiri | the greeting with my own hand | Paul’s personal handwritten signature, marking authentic letters against forgeries | ”my own handwriting” | Ties directly to the letter’s opening concern (2:2) about false claims “as if from us” — an authenticity marker relevant to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine (baseline High) | High — reuse baseline doctrine framing. No new term needed; flag for theologian note connecting this verse to baseline’s “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine entry, given 2 Thessalonians’ explicit concern about counterfeit apostolic communication (2:2). |
| χάρις (3:18) | charis | grace | Unmerited favor | ”grace” | Closing benediction | Reuse baseline exactly: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং — Critical (baseline) |
Summary of New Terms Requiring Confirmation
All terms marked “new coinage” or “provisional” above are proposed extensions of the baseline package’s descriptive-compound style and morpheme inventory. None have yet been confirmed against a printed Manipuri Bible or by a native-speaking theologian. Per baseline practice (cf. its own hedges on ৱারেপ্পা “covenant” and পীথোকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক “imputed righteousness”), every such term must be confirmed before Phase 2 translation begins, and every Critical/High risk new term must be routed through human theologian review before first use. See analysis/08_core_glossary.md for the consolidated list with risk tiers and doctrine mapping.
