Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Titus (Full Book)
Overview and Method
This analysis covers the entire book of Titus (3 chapters) in the original Koine Greek. It builds directly on the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json) and reuses every established Manipuri rendering exactly where a term recurs (e.g. χάρις = grace = মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং; σωτηρία-family = salvation = অহানবা; δικαιοσύνη = righteousness = অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক; πνεῦμα ἅγιον = Holy Spirit = থাওয়াই অসেংবা). Where Titus introduces vocabulary not covered by the Romans baseline, this document proposes a provisional Manipuri rendering consistent with the baseline’s established word-formation patterns (descriptive compounds over borrowed devotional vocabulary) and assigns a risk tier using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework, flagging items that require confirmation with a Manipuri-speaking theologian before Phase 2 lock-in.
Philological note on “gospel”: the noun εὐαγγέλιον does not lexically occur anywhere in Titus (unlike Romans). The concept is present through κήρυγμα (“proclamation,” 1:3) and the repeated “word/message” vocabulary, but no segment should be tagged with the established gospel term (নুংঙাইবগী পাউ) unless a translator deliberately supplies it as an interpretive gloss — flag any such addition for theologian review.
Philological note on “church”: ἐκκλησία also never occurs in Titus. Elder/overseer qualifications (ch. 1) and household-of-faith language operate without the lexeme itself. The established term কলিসিয়া should only be used where a translator supplies it as a contextual gloss for “the believing community,” and this must be flagged.
Titus is saturated with a distinctive vocabulary cluster largely absent from Romans: σωτήρ (“Savior,” 6x), ἐπιφαίνω/ἐπιφάνεια (“appear/appearing,” 3x), σώφρων-family (“self-controlled,” 6x+), εὐσέβεια (“godliness”), ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (“sound doctrine”), καλὰ/ἀγαθὰ ἔργα (“good works,” 8x+), and παλιγγενεσία (“regeneration,” 1x, hapax-adjacent). These form the backbone of this curriculum’s doctrines and receive the deepest treatment below.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Titus 2:11–3:8
Titus 2:11
Greek: Ἐπεφάνη γὰρ ἡ χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπεφάνη (ἐπιφαίνω) | epephanē (epiphainō) | “was made to appear / shone forth” | to become visible, be manifested, shine forth; used of a dawn or a divine appearance | ”appeared” (ESV/NIV/KJV) | Grace is personified as having broken into history at a specific point (the incarnation); opens an “appearing” motif spanning 2:11, 2:13, 3:4 | CRITICAL. Proposed: ফোংদোকপা (phongdokpa, “made manifest/revealed”), built on the established prophecy-root ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল. Extremely high collision risk with Vaishnava avatar-descent theology (Krishna’s periodic “appearances,” enacted in Ras Lila); must be taught as one unique historical event, not a repeatable divine descent. See doctrine note below. |
| χάρις…ἡ σωτήριος | charis…hē sōtērios | ”grace…the saving/salvific [grace]“ | grace qualified by an adjective meaning “bringing salvation" | "the grace of God that brings salvation” (ESV); “God’s grace…that offers salvation” (NIV) | Grace itself is the acting subject — grace does not merely enable salvation, grace itself has appeared bringing it | CRITICAL. Reuse established মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (grace) exactly; do not substitute কৃপা. Pair explicitly with অহানবা (salvation) as its stated result, since Titus 2:11 personifies grace as agent, an emphasis worth preserving structurally in Manipuri syntax. |
| πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις | pasin anthrōpois | ”to all people/men” | universal scope, no ethnic/social qualifier | ”to all people” (most versions) | Continues Romans’ universal-scope-of-gospel doctrine; no clan, caste, or ethnic boundary | HIGH. Retain unqualified universality per baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine; do not soften given Manipur’s contemporary inter-community sensitivities. |
Titus 2:12
Greek: παιδεύουσα ἡμᾶς ἵνα ἀρνησάμενοι τὴν ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας σωφρόνως καὶ δικαίως καὶ εὐσεβῶς ζήσωμεν ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παιδεύουσα (παιδεύω) | paideuousa (paideuō) | “training/disciplining/educating us” | from παῖς (“child”); to raise, instruct, discipline as a parent/tutor raises a child, sometimes with corrective discipline | ”training us” (ESV/NIV); “teaching us” (KJV) | THE central verb of the curriculum’s first doctrine, “Grace That Trains for Godly Living.” Grace is the subject that actively disciples/disciplines believers into godly character — not a one-time legal transaction only, but an ongoing pedagogical relationship | CRITICAL. Proposed provisional compound: শিংনবা তম্বিহনবা (shingnaba tambihanba, “training/disciplining instruction”), built on tamba (“to teach/learn”) + causative. Must NOT be assimilated to the ascetic self-training (tapasya-style discipline) cultivated by a Vaishnava bhakti devotee to build merit toward divine favor — here grace itself, already given, is the trainer; the believer is the one being trained, not the one earning training’s reward. Requires theologian confirmation before Phase 2 lock-in. |
| ἀσέβειαν (ἀσέβεια) | asebeian | ”ungodliness/impiety” | the negative of εὐσέβεια; irreverence toward God | ”ungodliness” (most versions) | The negative pole of the godliness (εὐσέβεια) theme running through the whole letter | HIGH. Render as negation of the proposed godliness term: তেংবাং মপু ইকায় খুম্নদবা (Tengban Mapu ikai khumdaba, “not reverencing God”). |
| κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας | kosmikas epithymias | ”worldly desires/passions” | ἐπιθυμία = strong desire, often illicit craving; κοσμικός = “belonging to this present world-order" | "worldly passions” (ESV); “worldly desires” (NIV) | Contrasted with the age to come; echoes 3:3’s ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς ποικίλαις | MEDIUM. Descriptive rendering: তালোনগী মমাংগী ঙাক-চাংবা (this-world’s desires/cravings). |
| σωφρόνως, δικαίως, εὐσεβῶς | sōphronōs, dikaiōs, eusebōs | ”self-controlled-ly, justly, godly” | three adverbs summarizing the trained life: toward self (self-mastery), toward neighbor (justice), toward God (piety) | “self-controlled, upright, and godly lives” (ESV) | The threefold fruit that grace’s training produces — a structuring triad worth preserving in translation as a matched set | HIGH (σωφρόνως/εὐσεβῶς), reuse (δικαίως). σωφρόνως: adverbial form of সংযম (sangyam, self-control — see glossary). δικαίως: adverbial form of reused অচুম্বা. εὐσεβῶς: adverbial form of proposed তেংবাং মপু ইকায় খুম্নবা (godliness). |
| ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι | en tō nyn aiōni | ”in the present age” | αἰών = age/era, contrasted with the age to come | ”in this present age” (ESV) | Eschatological framing: godly living happens now, while awaiting the “blessed hope” of v.13 | LOW. Standard temporal phrase: হৌজিক্কী মতম অসিদা (in this present time). |
Titus 2:13
Greek: προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσδεχόμενοι | prosdechomenoi | ”eagerly awaiting/looking for” | to receive to oneself in advance, to await expectantly | ”waiting for” (ESV); “while we wait for” (NIV) | Posture of hope-filled anticipation, not passive resignation or fatalism | LOW. থাজবগী মথौना ঙাকপা (awaiting with confident hope). |
| μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα | makarian elpida | ”blessed hope” | μακάριος = blessed/fortunate; ἐλπίς = confident expectation, not mere wish | ”blessed hope” (most versions) | A settled, certain future confidence grounded in Christ’s promised return, not wishful optimism or fate | MEDIUM. ঙায়রবা আশা (ngayraba asha, “blessed hope”), using loanword আশা (asha) for hope. Must be distinguished from fate-language (ৱাইফম, already forbidden elsewhere in baseline) and from generic worldly optimism. |
| ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης | epiphaneian tēs doxēs | ”the appearing of the glory” | noun form of ἐπιφαίνω (2:11); δόξα = established glory term | ”the appearing of the glory” (ESV); “the glorious appearing” (NIV) | Christ’s future, visible, bodily return in glory — the second “appearing” bracketing this passage with 2:11’s grace-appearing | CRITICAL. ফোংদোকপা (reuse from 2:11) + মতিক চাউবা (established glory term, মতিক চাউবা). Must be taught as one final, singular return, not a repeatable devotional epiphany as staged in Ras Lila performance. |
| τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | tou megalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou | ”of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” | single Greek article (τοῦ) governing both θεοῦ and σωτῆρος, both nouns referring to one person, Jesus Christ (Sharp’s rule construction) | “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (ESV/NIV); some older versions punctuate ambiguously | One of the clearest single-verse deity-of-Christ proof texts in the NT — grammatically, “God” and “Savior” are the same referent: Jesus Christ | CRITICAL. Human theologian review mandatory. Reuse established তেংবাং মপু (God) and জিসু ক্রিস্তো (Jesus Christ); pair with proposed অহানবিরকপা (Savior — see below). The Manipuri rendering must preserve the single-referent grammar (avoid inserting a coordinating structure that could be misread as naming two distinct beings, e.g. “God, and [also] our Savior Jesus Christ” as two separate figures). This directly extends baseline deity_of_christ and sonship_of_christ doctrine risk entries. |
Titus 2:14
Greek: ὃς ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα λυτρώσηται ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀνομίας καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἑαυτῷ λαὸν περιούσιον, ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν | edōken heauton hyper hēmōn | ”gave himself for/on behalf of us” | ὑπέρ = substitutionary/representative “for" | "gave himself for us” (most versions) | Substitutionary self-sacrifice; the historical, once-for-all atoning act | HIGH. মখোয়গী মহুৎতা মশা পীবিখ্রবা (having given himself in our place). Must be linked explicitly to Christ’s historical death, not framed as a devotional self-offering pattern echoing bhakti seva. |
| λυτρώσηται (λυτρόομαι) | lytrōsētai (lytroomai) | “might redeem/ransom” | to release by paying a price; ransom from slavery/captivity | ”redeem” (most versions) | Christ’s death as the price paid to free believers from lawlessness’s bondage | HIGH. Provisional: মমল পীদুনা থাদোকপা (mamal piduna thadokpa, “paying a price to set free”). Must not be framed as appeasement paid to a personified evil power or ancestral/Umang Lai spirit (as in traditional propitiatory offerings); the payment satisfies God’s own justice, given by God’s own initiative. |
| ἀνομίας (ἀνομία) | anomias | ”lawlessness” | negation of νόμος (law); state of being without/against law | ”lawlessness” (ESV); “wickedness” (NIV) | The condition from which believers are redeemed | MEDIUM. য়াথাং য়াদবা (yathang yadaba, “against the law”), built on the reused law term য়াথাং. |
| καθαρίσῃ (καθαρίζω) | katharisē (katharizō) | “might purify/cleanse” | ritual and moral cleansing | ”purify” (ESV); “purify for himself” (NIV) | Christ’s redemptive purpose includes cleansing a people set apart for himself | HIGH. See caution under 1:15 below regarding purity vocabulary; here the sense is unambiguously positive/moral, not ritual, so অসেংবা-family language is safer than শেংবা. Proposed: অসেংবা ওইহনবা (reuse sanctification-adjacent compound) may be repurposed contextually, or a distinct শেংহনবা (shenghanba, “causing to become clean”) — flag for confirmation. |
| λαὸν περιούσιον | laon periousion | ”a people for his own possession” | περιούσιος = “special, one’s own”; echoes LXX Exodus 19:5 covenant language | ”a people for his own possession” (ESV); “a people that are his very own” (NIV) | Covenant-people identity language, deliberately echoing Israel’s Exodus covenant status now applied to the church | HIGH. তেংবাং মপুগী মশাগী ফুরুপ (Tengban Mapugi mashagi phurup, “a people [group] that is God’s own”), building on the established ফুরুপ (clan/people-group) term. Needs explicit Old Testament covenant-background teaching, similar to the baseline’s seed_of_david note. |
| ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων | zēlōtēn kalōn ergōn | ”zealous for good works” | ζηλωτής = zealot, one eagerly devoted; καλὰ ἔργα = good works | ”zealous for good works” (ESV); “eager to do what is good” (NIV) | The purpose-clause climax: redemption’s goal is a people passionately devoted to good works — sets up the grace/works relationship developed through 3:5-8 | CRITICAL. ফজবা থবক (good works — see glossary) + ঙাক্লবা/হোৎনবা (eager/zealous for). Must be taught as the fruit of redemption, never its ground; direct link to grace doctrine’s forbidden bhakti-merit framing. |
Titus 2:15
Greek: Ταῦτα λάλει καὶ παρακάλει καὶ ἔλεγχε μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς. μηδείς σου περιφρονείτω
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παρακάλει (παρακαλέω) | parakalei | ”exhort/encourage/urge” | context-sensitive: entreaty or encouragement | ”exhort” (ESV); “encourage” (NIV) | Reuse baseline’s exhort entry pattern (থাওয়াই পীবা for encouragement, হায়জবা for entreaty); here encouragement-sense fits | LOW. Reuse থাওয়াই পীবা. |
| ἔλεγχε (ἐλέγχω) | elenche | ”rebuke/expose/convict” | to bring to light, refute, correct | ”rebuke” (ESV); “correct” (NIV) | Authoritative correction of error, paired with teaching and encouragement | MEDIUM. ফাজানা কায়েদা য়াথিংনা (rebuke/correct plainly). |
| μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς | meta pasēs epitagēs | ”with all authority/command” | ἐπιταγή = authoritative command (also 1:3, of God’s command) | “with all authority” (ESV) | Titus’s teaching authority is derivative — delegated from the same divine commission named in 1:3 | MEDIUM. মথৌ পুম্নমক্কী মতাংদা (with full/complete authority), distinguished from the political ক্ষমতা used for civil government in ch.3. |
Titus 3:1
Greek: Ὑπομίμνησκε αὐτοὺς ἀρχαῖς ἐξουσίαις ὑποτάσσεσθαι, πειθαρχεῖν, πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἑτοίμους εἶναι
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρχαῖς ἐξουσίαις | archais exousiais | ”to rulers, to authorities” | ἀρχή = ruling office/ruler; ἐξουσία = delegated power/right to act | ”rulers and authorities” (ESV); “rulers and authorities” (NIV) | Civil government, echoing Romans 13:1-7 | MEDIUM. লৈবাক্কী মপুশিং (rulers of the land) + ক্ষমতা (civil authority/power, loanword). Must not be read as endorsing the historic Meitei king’s own claimed divine-descent (Pakhangba-lineage) authority; this is the general biblical principle that civil order is instituted by God, not a specific royal-theology claim. |
| ὑποτάσσεσθαι (ὑποτάσσω) | hypotassesthai (hypotassō) | “to be subject/submit” | to arrange under, place in a subordinate but voluntary ordered relationship | ”be submissive to” (ESV); “be subject to” (NIV) | THE central verb of the “Submission to Authority” doctrine, recurring for wives (2:5), slaves (2:9), and citizens (3:1) | HIGH. ইনবা (inba), reusing the same root already used in the baseline’s obedience_of_faith compound (থাজবগী ইনবা). Must be taught as voluntary gospel-shaped conduct, not equated with clan/village lup elder-deference structures or caste-inflected social hierarchy sometimes reinforced in aspects of Manipuri Vaishnava social order. |
| πειθαρχεῖν (πειθαρχέω) | peitharchein | ”to obey [those in] authority” | compound of πείθομαι (obey) + ἀρχή (rule) | “to obey” (ESV) | Reinforces ὑποτάσσω with an explicit obedience-to-rulers sense | MEDIUM. ইনবা (paired/near-synonym; may render with a slightly stronger obedience nuance, য়াথাং ইনবা). |
| ἔργον ἀγαθὸν | ergon agathon | ”good work” | synonym-set with καλὰ ἔργα | ”good work” (most versions) | First of many good-works refrains in Titus | HIGH. ফজবা থবক (reuse from glossary). |
Titus 3:2
Greek: μηδένα βλασφημεῖν, ἀμάχους εἶναι, ἐπιεικεῖς, πᾶσαν ἐνδεικνυμένους πραΰτητα πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βλασφημεῖν (βλασφημέω) | blasphēmein | ”to speak evil of/slander” | to defame, revile; can target God (blasphemy proper) or people | ”to speak evil of no one” (ESV) | Extends beyond doctrinal blasphemy to ordinary defamation of any person, including political opponents | MEDIUM. কায়দা ৱারী নংবা (to speak evil of someone), distinct from the graver sense used when God/the Word is the object (2:5). |
| πραΰτητα (πραΰτης) | prautēta | ”gentleness/meekness” | strength held under control, not weakness | ”gentleness” (most versions) | The public posture Christians owe even unbelieving civil society | LOW. নুংঙাইবা পুক্নীং (gentle disposition). |
Titus 3:3
Greek: Ἦμεν γάρ ποτε καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀνόητοι, ἀπειθεῖς, πλανώμενοι, δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς ποικίλαις, ἐν κακίᾳ καὶ φθόνῳ διάγοντες, στυγητοί, μισοῦντες ἀλλήλους
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις | douleuontes epithymiais | ”enslaved to desires/passions” | δουλεύω = to serve as a slave | ”slaves to various passions” (ESV) | Pre-conversion bondage, contrasted with the freedom brought by grace’s appearing (3:4-7) | MEDIUM. ঙাক-চাংবগী মনাই ওইবা (being a slave to desires). |
| πλανώμενοι (πλανάω) | planōmenoi | ”being led astray/deceived” | to wander, be deceived | ”led astray” (ESV) | Universal pre-Christian condition — “we ourselves” includes Paul and Titus, a rhetorically important admission | LOW. ৱারোই লাংলবা (having gone astray). |
| μισοῦντες ἀλλήλους | misountes allēlous | ”hating one another” | mutual hostility | ”hating one another” (ESV) | The self-description functions as the dark backdrop against which grace’s appearing (v.4) shines | LOW. অমাগা অমাগা য়েংথিবা (hating one another). |
Titus 3:4
Greek: ὅτε δὲ ἡ χρηστότης καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία ἐπεφάνη τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χρηστότης | chrēstotēs | ”kindness/goodness” | benevolent disposition in action | ”kindness” (most versions) | God’s kindness, not human merit, is the moving cause of 3:5’s salvation | MEDIUM. থৌগাল (thougal, kindness/favor shown in action). |
| φιλανθρωπία | philanthrōpia | ”love for mankind” | compound of φιλέω (love) + ἄνθρωπος (mankind); literally “philanthropy" | "love” (ESV); “love for mankind” (NIV) | Emphasizes the sheer breadth of God’s benevolent love toward humanity as such, not toward a devotee class | MEDIUM. মীওই পুম্নমক্তা নিংশিংবা (love toward all humankind). |
| ἐπεφάνη | epephanē | ”appeared” | (as in 2:11, 2:13) | “appeared” (most versions) | Third occurrence of the “appearing” motif — closes the bracket opened at 2:11 | CRITICAL. ফোংদোকপা (reuse — see 2:11 note above). |
| τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ | tou sōtēros hēmōn theou | ”of God our Savior” | (as in 1:3, 2:10) | “God our Savior” (most versions) | Establishes God the Father, no less than Christ, as “Savior” — the title is shared across Father and Son in this letter | CRITICAL. তেংবাং মপু অহানবিরকপা (God the Savior/rescuer). See glossary entry for Savior. |
Titus 3:5
Greek: οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς, διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ | ouk ex ergōn tōn en dikaiosynē | ”not from/by works [done] in righteousness” | negates any human righteous-deed basis for salvation | ”not because of works done by us in righteousness” (ESV) | THE key verse for “Salvation by Grace not Works.” Directly parallels Romans 3:20, 28; 4:4-5; 11:5-6 | CRITICAL. য়াথাংদা চৎনবিরাক ফোংহনবগী থবক শিন্না নত্তে (not by works that display righteousness in conduct). Reuse অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক for righteousness and ফজবা থবক for works; the negative construction must be unmistakably clear — a known point of vulnerability given Vaishnava bhakti’s works-adjacent সেবা (devotional service) framework, per baseline’s grace and obedience_of_faith doctrine notes. |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy” | compassion shown to the undeserving/suffering | ”mercy” (most versions) | The stated positive ground of salvation, replacing “works” | HIGH. Proposed করুণা (karuna, a shared pan-Indic religious term). Must be distinguished, per an explicit translator note, from Krishna’s karuna as understood in bhakti devotionalism (a compassion typically responsive to a devotee’s devoted service) — God’s mercy here precedes and is independent of any devotional achievement, exactly parallel to the grace/কৃপা distinction already established in the baseline. |
| ἔσωσεν (σῴζω) | esōsen | ”he saved” | verb form of salvation | ”he saved us” (most versions) | Reuses established salvation vocabulary in verb form | CRITICAL. Verb form of reused অহানবা: অহানবিহনখি / অহান্নবিরে. |
| λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας | loutrou palingenesias | ”washing of regeneration” | λουτρόν = washing/bath (concrete or metaphorical); παλιγγενεσία = “again-birth,” a NT-rare compound (only here and Matthew 19:28) meaning a radical, one-time re-origination, not a repeatable cycle | ”washing of regeneration” (ESV); “washing of rebirth” (NIV) | THE key term for “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.” Denotes the Spirit’s decisive, one-time re-making of the believer at conversion, symbolized by baptismal washing | CRITICAL. MUST NOT use পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation) — this is the single highest-risk lexical choice in the entire book, since the English/Greek concept itself (“again-birth”) is the closest linguistic cousin of the very word the Romans baseline already forbids for resurrection. Proposed: থাওয়াইদগী অনৌবা হিংবা পীবা (thawaidagi anouba hingba piba, “the giving of new life from/by the Spirit”), deliberately avoiding “birth” vocabulary altogether. Pair with শেংহনবা লুস্মুক (a washing that cleanses) for the λουτρόν image. Requires mandatory theologian review; must be taught as a one-time, non-repeatable, Spirit-wrought inward re-creation — not a transmigration event within Sanamahi ancestral-spirit belief or Vaishnava samsara/reincarnation cosmology. |
| ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου | anakainōseōs pneumatos hagiou | ”of renewal of/by the Holy Spirit” | ἀνακαίνωσις = renewal, making new again | ”renewal of the Holy Spirit” (ESV) | Parallel/complementary image to παλιγγενεσία — the Spirit’s ongoing renewing work | HIGH. থাওয়াই অসেংবাগী অনৌবা ওইহনবা (reuse Holy Spirit term + “making new” compound). |
Titus 3:6
Greek: οὗ ἐξέχεεν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς πλουσίως διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐξέχεεν (ἐκχέω) | execheen | ”poured out” | vivid outpouring metaphor, echoes Pentecost language (Acts 2:17-18, quoting Joel) | “poured out” (most versions) | The Spirit’s generous, abundant giving — not rationed or merit-measured | MEDIUM. হেল্লকখি (poured out abundantly). |
| πλουσίως | plousiōs | ”richly/abundantly” | generous abundance | ”richly” (ESV) | Reinforces the unmerited, lavish character of the Spirit’s giving | LOW. য়াম্না লৈরিবা (abundantly). |
| διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν | dia Iēsou Christou tou sōtēros hēmōn | ”through Jesus Christ our Savior” | (parallel to 3:4’s “God our Savior”) | “through Jesus Christ our Savior” (most versions) | Second half of the Father/Son shared-Savior-title pattern (3:4 God our Savior; 3:6 Jesus Christ our Savior) | CRITICAL. জিসু ক্রিস্তো, মখোয়গী অহানবিরকপা (Jesus Christ, our Savior). |
Titus 3:7
Greek: ἵνα δικαιωθέντες τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι κληρονόμοι γενηθῶμεν κατʼ ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίου
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δικαιωθέντες (δικαιόω) | dikaiōthentes | ”having been justified” | forensic declaration of righteousness | ”justified” (most versions) | Reuses the Romans-established justification doctrine directly | CRITICAL. Reuse অচুম্বা ওইহনবা exactly (passive participle form). |
| τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι | tē ekeinou chariti | ”by his grace” | instrumental grace | ”by his grace” (most versions) | Ties justification explicitly back to grace, completing the grace→salvation→justification chain begun at 2:11 | CRITICAL. মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাংগী মতুংইন্না (reuse grace term). |
| κληρονόμοι (κληρονόμος) | klēronomoi | ”heirs” | one who receives an inheritance, full legal beneficiary status | ”heirs” (most versions) | Connects justification to the Romans 8 adoption/inheritance theme without repeating the exact adoption vocabulary | HIGH. Proposed হকশেল ফংবা মচা (hakshel phangba macha, “a child who receives inheritance rights”), built on the established adoption term (মচা ওইনা লৌবা). Requires the same explicit inheritance-rights teaching the baseline flags for adoption, since formal legal inheritance is not a settled category in traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) kinship structure. |
| ζωῆς αἰωνίου | zōēs aiōniou | ”of eternal life” | permanent, unending life in the age to come, in contrast to the present age (2:12) | “eternal life” (most versions) | The heir’s inheritance is specified as eternal life itself | MEDIUM. লোমননা হিংবা (lomanna hingba, “life forever”). Must be distinguished from Vaishnava eternal-liberated-existence-with-Krishna aspiration and from an escape-from-rebirth framing; this is resurrection life with a personal God, grounded in Christ’s own resurrection. |
Titus 3:8
Greek: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος, καὶ περὶ τούτων βούλομαί σε διαβεβαιοῦσθαι, ἵνα φροντίζωσιν καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷ· ταῦτά ἐστιν καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | Pistos ho logos | ”faithful/trustworthy is the word/saying” | a fixed formula in the Pastoral Epistles marking an authoritative summary statement | ”the saying is trustworthy” (ESV); “this is a trustworthy saying” (NIV) | Paul’s formula stamps 3:4-7 as a settled, creed-like summary of the gospel — worth marking distinctly in the destination text as a formula, if this curriculum treats it as a recurring device | MEDIUM. অচুম্বা য়াবা ৱাহেই অসি (this saying is true/trustworthy), building on reused অচুম্বা (true). |
| οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷ | hoi pepisteukotes theō | ”those who have believed God” | perfect participle: a settled, completed state of belief | ”those who have believed in God” (ESV) | Faith in God is the identity-marker of those who then pursue good works | HIGH. Reuse থাজবা (faith) verb form: তেংবাং মপুবু থাজরবা মীওইশিং। |
| φροντίζωσιν…προΐστασθαι | phrontizōsin…proistasthai | ”may be careful to devote themselves to / engage in” | φροντίζω = take care/be concerned; προΐστημι = devote oneself to, be occupied with, take the lead in | ”devote themselves to” (ESV); “be careful to do” (NIV) | Good works follow believing as a deliberate, ongoing occupation — not incidental, not optional | HIGH. ফজবা থবকপুবু থাদোংনা তোংনবা (to diligently occupy oneself with good works). |
| καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις | kala kai ōphelima tois anthrōpois | ”good and beneficial/profitable to people” | ὠφέλιμος = useful, advantageous | ”excellent and profitable for people” (ESV) | Closes the core passage on a note of practical, this-world benefit — good works are not merely pious gestures but genuinely helpful to others | LOW. মীওইশিংগী ফায়দা ওইবা (beneficial to people). |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (Titus 1:1-16)
This chapter falls entirely outside the core passage and carries its own dense theological vocabulary cluster: apostolic authority, the qualifications for elders/overseers, and a polemic against false teachers. Full term treatment below.
1:1-4 (Salutation)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος θεοῦ | doulos theou | ”servant/slave of God” | δοῦλος = bondservant, one owned by a master | ”servant of God” (ESV); “servant of God” (NIV) | Paul’s self-designation of total ownership/belonging to God, prior to naming apostleship | MEDIUM. তেংবাং মপুগী মনাই (Tengban Mapugi manai, “God’s servant/bondservant”). |
| ἀπόστολος | apostolos | ”apostle, one sent” | (as Romans baseline) | “apostle” | Established authority category | MEDIUM. Reuse তবিদগী থাবিরকপা exactly. |
| κατὰ πίστιν ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ | kata pistin eklektōn theou | ”according to the faith of God’s elect” | ἐκλεκτός = chosen/elect | ”for the faith of God’s elect” (ESV) | Ties apostolic ministry to God’s sovereign election, echoing Romans 8:28-30, 9:11 | HIGH. Reuse election term তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা and faith term থাজবা exactly. |
| ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας | epignōsin alētheias | ”knowledge of the truth” | ἐπίγνωσις = full/precise knowledge; ἀλήθεια = truth, reality, that which is not false | ”knowledge of the truth” (most versions) | Sets up the “sound doctrine vs. myths” contrast developed through the letter | MEDIUM. New term: অচুম্বা (achumba) used as noun (“the truth”), reusing the adjective root already embedded in the established righteousness compound. পুম্না খংবা (full knowing) + অচুম্বা (truth). |
| εὐσέβειαν (εὐσέβεια) | eusebeian | ”godliness” | reverent piety toward God, expressed in life conduct | ”godliness” (most versions) | First occurrence of the letter’s signature term; recurs implicitly through 2:12’s εὐσεβῶς | HIGH. তেংবাং মপু ইকায় খুম্নবা (Tengban Mapu ikai khumnaba, “reverencing God”). Must be distinguished from ভক্তি (bhakti, the specific Vaishnava devotional-love practice) per the baseline’s faith doctrine note, and from Sanamahi ritual-piety observance. Requires theologian confirmation. |
| ἐλπίδι ζωῆς αἰωνίου | elpidi zōēs aiōniou | ”hope of eternal life” | (as 3:7) | “hope of eternal life” (most versions) | First occurrence of eternal-life-as-hope theme | MEDIUM. Reuse আশা (hope) + লোমननা হিংবা (eternal life), both from glossary. |
| ὁ ἀψευδὴς θεὸς | ho apseudēs theos | ”the God who does not lie” | ἀψευδής = truthful, incapable of lying | ”God, who never lies” (NIV) | God’s own trustworthiness underwrites the promise; connects to inspiration_of_scripture sensitivity around lost/burned sacred texts (Puya Meithaba) already flagged in the baseline — here it is God’s own character, not merely a preserved text, that guarantees truth | HIGH. তেংবাং মপু, মিনাংনদবা (God, who does not lie/deceive). |
| σωτῆρος (σωτήρ) | sōtēros | ”Savior” | one who rescues/delivers | ”Savior” (most versions) | First occurrence of the letter’s other signature term, here applied to “God our Savior” | CRITICAL. Proposed অহানবিরকপা (ahanbirakpa, “the one who rescues/saves”), formed by the same agentive pattern as the established apostle term (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা). Rejected alternatives: ঠাকুর (Krishna-devotional title, never), গুরু (spiritual teacher/guide, risks reducing Savior to a moksha-granting guru figure, never), মোক্ষদাতা (liberation-granter, a specifically Vaishnava soteriological title, never). This term recurs 6x in Titus (1:3, 1:4, 2:10, 2:13, 3:4, 3:6) and is applied to both God the Father and Jesus Christ — teach this dual application explicitly as a deity-of-Christ data point. Human theologian review mandatory for every occurrence. |
| χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη | charis kai eirēnē | ”grace and peace” | standard Pauline salutation pair | ”grace and peace” (most versions) | Opening blessing formula | HIGH/MEDIUM. Reuse established grace and peace terms exactly. |
1:5-9 (Elder/overseer qualifications)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβυτέρους (πρεσβύτερος) | presbyterous | ”elders” | church office, from “elder/older one" | "elders” (most versions) | THE key term for “Qualifications for Elders.” Titus 1:5-7 treats πρεσβύτερος and ἐπίσκοπος as functionally interchangeable — an important exegetical point to preserve | HIGH. Proposed কলিসিয়াগী অহল (kalisiyagi ahal, “elder of the church”), building on the established church term কলিসিয়া and the ordinary Meitei word for elder/senior (ahal). Must be distinguished from a traditional Meitei clan/village elder (yumnak lup structures, which carry socio-political rather than spiritual authority) and from a Vaishnava temple hierarchy office (e.g. mahant) or Sanamahi ritual specialist (maiba). Requires theologian/native-speaker confirmation. |
| ἐπίσκοπον (ἐπίσκοπος) | episkopon | ”overseer/bishop” | one who watches over/superintends | ”overseer” (ESV); “elder”/“overseer” (NIV) used as synonym here | Same office as πρεσβύτερος in this context (1:7 begins with γάρ, explaining why elders must be blameless: “for the overseer must be…”) | HIGH. Proposed কলিসিয়া চেক্শিনবা (kalisiya cheksinba, “one who watches over the church”). Preserve the synonym relationship with elder in translator notes so Phase 2 does not accidentally create two unrelated offices. |
| ἀνέγκλητον (ἀνέγκλητος) | anenklēton | ”blameless/beyond reproach” | not open to accusation | ”above reproach” (ESV) | Repeated qualification standard (1:6, 1:7) | MEDIUM. Proposed থেমদবা (themdaba, “without fault/blemish”), provisional pending confirmation. |
| μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ | mias gynaikos anēr | ”a one-woman man” | idiom for marital faithfulness | ”the husband of one wife” (ESV) | A concrete, culturally-loaded marital-fidelity standard | MEDIUM. নুপী অমাত্তাগী মপুরোইবা (faithful to one wife); flag for native-speaker sensitivity given the practical range of Meitei marriage customs and any current or historical polygamy practice, to ensure the standard is communicated as a positive fidelity requirement, not an implied critique of a specific community. |
| θεοῦ οἰκονόμον (οἰκονόμος) | theou oikonomon | ”God’s steward/household-manager” | οἰκονόμος = one who manages another’s household/estate on the owner’s behalf | ”God’s steward” (ESV); “God’s manager” (NIV) | Elders hold delegated, accountable stewardship — the church is God’s household, not the elder’s own domain | MEDIUM. থৌনায় য়েংশিলবা (thounai yengsilba, “one who manages/oversees affairs [on another’s behalf]”). |
| Character catalogue (μὴ αὐθάδη, μὴ ὀργίλον, μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, μὴ αἰσχροκερδῆ / φιλόξενον, φιλάγαθον, δίκαιον, ὅσιον, ἐγκρατῆ) | — | “not arrogant, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not violent, not greedy for gain / [but] hospitable, a lover of good, just, holy/devout, self-disciplined” | a standard Hellenistic virtue/vice catalogue adapted for Christian leadership | various | Establishes character (not merely competence) as the qualification standard | LOW-MEDIUM (catalogued together). Standard Meitei equivalents exist for most of these (e.g. φιλόξενον → hospitality, MEDIUM given real Manipuri hospitality norms worth affirming rather than displacing; πάροινον → not given to wine/rice-beer, MEDIUM given regional alcohol-use customs). ὅσιον (holy/devout) is worth flagging separately as a distinct Greek word from ἅγιος — render with a devout/reverent-conduct nuance rather than reusing অসেংবা wholesale, to preserve the lexical distinction; confirm with theologian. Full lexical mapping of this catalogue is deferred to Phase 2 translation-memory construction; none of these individually rises above Medium risk. |
1:9-13 (Sound doctrine and its opponents)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τὸν κατὰ τὴν διδαχὴν πιστὸν λόγον | ton kata tēn didachēn piston logon | ”the trustworthy word in accordance with the teaching” | διδαχή = teaching/doctrine (near-synonym of διδασκαλία) | “the trustworthy word as taught” (ESV) | First appearance of the doctrine-fidelity theme central to this chapter | HIGH. অচুম্বা তম্বিবগী মতুংইন্না থাজবা য়াবা ৱাহেই (the trustworthy word in accord with true teaching). |
| τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ (ὑγιαίνω) | tē didaskalia tē hygiainousē | ”in the healthy/sound teaching” | ὑγιαίνω = to be in good health (medical metaphor applied to doctrine) | “sound doctrine” (most versions) | THE key phrase for “Sound Doctrine and Good Works,” recurring at 1:9, 2:1, 2:8 (adjective form), and implicitly framing the whole letter’s ethical instruction. | CRITICAL. Proposed অচুম্বা তম্বিবা (achumba tambiba, “true/correct teaching”), built on the reused truth-adjective অচুম্বা and the native teaching-verb root tamba. Must be distinguished from a Vaishnava guru-parampara teaching-lineage’s transmitted doctrine and from Sanamahi oral tradition (wari) authority — sound doctrine here is the fixed, apostolic, already-given gospel content, not an esoteric or lineage-dependent body of knowledge accumulating authority through a teacher’s personal spiritual attainment. Requires theologian confirmation before Phase 2 lock-in. |
| ἀντιλέγοντας ἐλέγχειν | antilegontas elenchein | ”to refute those who contradict” | ἀντιλέγω = speak against/contradict | ”to rebuke those who contradict it” (ESV) | Doctrinal correction is an explicit elder duty | MEDIUM. Reuse ফাজানা কায়েদা য়াথিংনা (see 2:15). |
| ἀνυπότακτοι (ἀνυπότακτος) | anypotaktoi | ”insubordinate/undisciplined” | negation of ὑποτάσσω (submit) | “insubordinate” (ESV); “rebellious” (NIV) | Direct antonym of the submission-to-authority theme developed in ch.2-3; here describes false teachers’ character, not a political stance | HIGH. ইনবা য়াদবা (inaba yadaba, “not submitting/obeying”), negation of the established submission root ইনবা. |
| μάλιστα οἱ ἐκ τῆς περιτομῆς | malista hoi ek tēs peritomēs | ”especially those of the circumcision” | περιτομή = circumcision, marking a Jewish-background faction | ”especially those of the circumcision party” (ESV) | Locates the specific controversy: a Jewish-Christian legalist faction pushing myths/genealogies (cf. 1:14, 3:9) | MEDIUM. কুইদগী থোকখিবা মীওইশিং (those [originally] from the circumcised group). Requires careful contextual footnoting so this is read historically (a first-century intra-Jewish-Christian dispute), not mapped onto any contemporary Manipuri inter-community tension. |
| αἰσχροῦ κέρδους χάριν | aischrou kerdous charin | ”for the sake of shameful/dishonest gain” | αἰσχρός = shameful; κέρδος = gain/profit | ”for shameful gain” (ESV) | Financial motive behind false teaching | LOW. ইকায়শিদবা মখল (shameful gain/profit). |
| Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται…γαστέρες ἀργαί | Krētes aei pseustai…gasteres argai | ”Cretans are always liars…idle bellies” | a quotation from the poet Epimenides, an ethnic-stereotype proverb | ”Cretans are always liars…lazy gluttons” (ESV) | Paul quotes a known Cretan self-critique to characterize the local false-teaching problem — a rhetorical device, not Paul’s own original ethnic judgment | LOW. Standard descriptive translation; flag with a note that this is a quoted proverb, not an apostolic ethnic slur, given contemporary sensitivity to ethnic-stereotype language in Manipur. |
| ὑγιαίνωσιν ἐν τῇ πίστει | hygiainōsin en tē pistei | ”may be sound in the faith” | ὑγιαίνω again, applied to persons’ faith rather than to doctrine | ”be sound in the faith” (ESV) | The goal of sharp rebuke is restored doctrinal health, not punishment for its own sake | HIGH. থাজবগী মতাংদা অচুম্বা ওইনা লেপ্পা (to stand sound/true in the faith). |
| Ἰουδαϊκοῖς μύθοις (μῦθος) | Ioudaikois mythois | ”Jewish myths/fables” | μῦθος = a traditional tale, here disparaging speculative/legendary teaching | ”Jewish myths” (ESV) | Names the specific error-content: speculative legendary material, likely rabbinic genealogical/legal expansion, not Scripture itself | MEDIUM. অহৌবা ৱারী (ahouba wari, “false/fabricated story”). Flag: must not be extended to characterize traditional Meitei oral narrative heritage (including the wari/pena recitation traditions central to Sanamahi religious memory, or the puya manuscripts lost in the 1729 Puya Meithaba) — this targets a specific first-century Jewish-Christian legalist controversy, not any culture’s entire oral tradition. |
| ἐντολαῖς ἀνθρώπων | entolais anthrōpōn | ”commandments of men” | ἐντολή = commandment/instruction | ”commands of men” (ESV) | Human-made religious rules opposed to God’s own truth | LOW. মীওইশিংগী য়াথাং (human commandments). |
1:15-16 (Purity and profession vs. denial)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πάντα καθαρὰ τοῖς καθαροῖς (καθαρός) | panta kathara tois katharois | ”all things are pure to the pure” | καθαρός = clean/pure, ritual or moral | ”to the pure, all things are pure” (ESV) | A polemical, almost proverbial statement rejecting a ritual-purity-code mindset in favor of inward moral/conscience purity — directly engages the “Jewish myths and commandments of men” controversy of v.14 | HIGH. Careful handling required. The baseline reserves শেংবা strictly for physical/ritual cleanliness and অসেংবা for moral purity/set-apartness; this verse’s rhetorical point is that ritual-purity codes are secondary to the state of the “mind and conscience” (v.15b). Recommend rendering with অসেংবা-family vocabulary (moral/inward purity) here, with an explicit translator note explaining Paul’s polemical target, given this verse’s close and risky resemblance to both Sanamahi Lai Haraoba ritual-purification concerns and Vaishnava temple/food purity codes (śuddhi) — precisely the kind of ritual-purity framework this verse is arguing past. Human theologian review recommended. |
| μεμιαμμένοις (μιαίνω) | memiammenois | ”defiled” | to stain, pollute, corrupt | ”defiled” (ESV) | Describes the unbelieving mind/conscience, not ritual food/object contact | HIGH. নংহনবা (defiled/corrupted), paired with the purity caution above. |
| ὁ νοῦς καὶ ἡ συνείδησις | ho nous kai hē syneidēsis | ”the mind and the conscience” | νοῦς = mind/understanding; συνείδησις = conscience, the inward moral-awareness faculty | ”mind and conscience” (ESV) | Locates true defilement in the inward moral faculty, not the outward ritual object | MEDIUM. পুক্নীং (mind) + provisional মনুংগী খংবা-থাজবা (manunggi khangba-thajaba, “inner knowing-sense,” for conscience) — this conscience term needs native-speaker/theologian confirmation as no settled Manipuri Christian equivalent is attested. |
| θεὸν ὁμολογοῦσιν εἰδέναι (ὁμολογέω) | theon homologousin eidenai | ”they profess to know God” | ὁμολογέω = to confess/profess/acknowledge openly | ”they profess to know God” (ESV) | Sets up a profession-vs-practice contrast; the same verb family (ὁμολογέω) underlies Romans 10:9-10’s confession of Lordship, so this passage’s “empty profession” is a instructive negative counterpart to that positive confession | HIGH. ফোংদোকপা/হায়বা (to profess/declare) — note connection to the baseline’s Romans 10:9-10 consistency rule; the same confession-vocabulary family must be used consistently, with this verse marked as a warning against confession unaccompanied by works. |
| τοῖς ἔργοις ἀρνοῦνται | tois ergois arnountai | ”by their works they deny [him]“ | ἀρνέομαι = to deny/disown | ”deny him by their works” (ESV) | Works can either adorn sound doctrine (2:10) or contradict a profession of faith (1:16) — establishes the works/doctrine relationship that runs through the whole letter | HIGH. থবক্না য়াদোকপা (to deny/reject by [their] deeds). |
| πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἀδόκιμοι | pros pan ergon agathon adokimoi | ”unfit/disqualified for every good work” | ἀδόκιμος = failing the test, disqualified | ”unfit for any good work” (ESV) | Negative counterpart to the letter’s positive good-works refrain | HIGH. ফজবা থবক তৌবা ঙমদবা (unable/unfit to do good works). |
Chapter 2 (Titus 2:1-10)
Verses 2:11-15 are treated in the core-passage section above (Part 1); this section covers only 2:1-10.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἃ πρέπει τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ | ha prepei tē hygiainousē didaskalia | ”what befits sound doctrine” | πρέπω = to be fitting/proper | ”what accords with sound doctrine” (ESV) | Reuse of the sound-doctrine theme (see 1:9); here applied to household-code instructions rather than doctrinal controversy | CRITICAL. Reuse proposed অচুম্বা তম্বিবা exactly. |
| πρεσβύτας / πρεσβύτιδας | presbytas / presbytidas | ”older men” / “older women” | πρεσβύτης/πρεσβύτις = an aged person (age-based, distinct from the church-office word πρεσβύτερος) | “older men” / “older women” (most versions) | Important lexical distinction from 1:5’s πρεσβύτερος (office): this is a household-code age category, not an office | MEDIUM. অহল নুপাশিং / অহল নুপীশিং (elder/older men / older women, using the ordinary age-sense of “ahal,” explicitly distinguished from the church-office compound কলিসিয়াগী অহল). Flag this lexical distinction clearly for Phase 2 translators to avoid conflating age-based respect with the office of elder. |
| νηφαλίους, σεμνούς | nēphalious, semnous | ”sober/temperate, dignified” | standard virtue-catalogue terms | ”sober-minded, dignified” (ESV) | Character standards for older men | LOW. Standard equivalents; no major doctrinal risk. |
| σωφρόνας (σώφρων) | sōphronas | ”self-controlled/sensible” | see full treatment under glossary; recurs 2:2, 2:4 (σωφρονίζωσιν), 2:5, 2:6 (σωφρονεῖν), and 2:12 (σωφρόνως) | “self-controlled” (most versions) | The single most frequent character-term in Titus 2, forming a structural refrain across every household-code group (older men, older women training younger women, younger men) | HIGH. Proposed সংযম (sangyam), a shared Indic loanword. Explicit distinguishing note required: Christian self-control here is Spirit-enabled fruit of grace’s training (2:11-12), not the devotee’s own ascetic self-discipline (sangyam/tapasya) cultivated within Vaishnava bhakti practice to build merit or deepen divine favor. |
| ὑγιαίνοντας τῇ πίστει, τῇ ἀγάπῃ, τῇ ὑπομονῇ | hygiainontas tē pistei, tē agapē, tē hypomonē | ”sound in faith, in love, in endurance” | ἀγάπη = self-giving love; ὑπομονή = patient endurance | ”sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness” (ESV) | Sound doctrine (health metaphor) extended to describe a person’s whole character, not just their propositional beliefs | MEDIUM. Reuse থাজবা (faith); new terms for love (নুংশিবা, nungshiba, standard Meitei word for love) and endurance (খাংহোনবা, khanghonba, standard word for patient endurance) — both Low-Medium risk, standard vocabulary. |
| ἱεροπρεπεῖς (ἱεροπρεπής) | hieroprepeis | ”reverent, as befits sacred things” | compound of ἱερός (sacred) + πρέπω (fitting) | “reverent in behavior” (ESV); “reverent in the way they live” (NIV) | An unusual, temple-associated Greek word applied to older women’s ordinary demeanor — deliberately elevates everyday conduct to the dignity of sacred service | MEDIUM. ফৎতবা মফম ওইনা লৈবগী মতৌ (a manner befitting a sacred/holy place). Flag: avoid vocabulary that would specifically evoke Vaishnava temple ritual decorum or Sanamahi sacred-grove (Umang Lai) protocol; the sense here is dignity befitting sacred devotion in general conduct, not conformity to a specific ritual-space code. |
| μὴ διαβόλους (διάβολος used adjectivally) | mē diabolous | ”not slanderers” | διάβολος normally “the Devil,” here adjectival: “slanderous/slandering" | "not slanderers” (ESV) | Distinct from the proper-noun “Devil”; a slander/gossip vice | LOW. কায়দা ৱারী শাবা (slandering/gossiping about someone); flag only to note the lexical distinction from the proper-noun Devil so translators do not conflate the two. |
| καλοδιδασκάλους | kalodidaskalous | ”teachers of good” | compound: καλός (good) + διδάσκαλος (teacher) | “teaching what is good” (ESV) | Older women given an explicit teaching role toward younger women — relevant to how teaching authority is distributed in the household of faith | MEDIUM. ফজবা তম্বিবা মীওই (a teacher of what is good). |
| σωφρονίζωσιν (σωφρονίζω) | sōphronizōsin | ”may train/encourage to be sensible” | causative form of σώφρων — “to make [someone] self-controlled" | "train” (ESV); “encourage” (NIV) | A second training-verb alongside 2:12’s παιδεύω — reinforces the “training” theme structurally within the household code, not only in the theological summary of 2:11-14 | CRITICAL. Same root as σώφρων (সংযম) with a causative sense: সংযমদা তম্বিহনবা (to train/instruct into self-control). Directly connects to the core doctrine “Grace That Trains for Godly Living,” since this verb shows the training principle operating concretely within church community relationships (older women discipling younger women), not only as an abstract theological statement. |
| ὑποτασσομένας τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν | hypotassomenas tois idiois andrasin | ”submitting to their own husbands” | ὑποτάσσω (see 3:1) | “submissive to their own husbands” (ESV) | First occurrence of the submission theme in the household-code section | HIGH. Reuse proposed ইনবা (submission root). |
| ἵνα μὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ βλασφημῆται | hina mē ho logos tou theou blasphēmētai | ”so that the word of God may not be reviled/blasphemed” | βλασφημέω applied here to God’s word/reputation, a graver sense than 3:2’s general slander | ”that the word of God may not be reviled” (ESV) | Household conduct has evangelistic/reputational stakes for the gospel itself — echoes the baseline’s mission_to_nations sensitivity about the church’s public reputation in Manipur’s mixed religious environment | HIGH. তেংবাং মপুগী ৱাহেইদা থীনা ৱারী নংহনবা (causing God’s word to be spoken evil of/reviled). |
| δούλους…ὑποτάσσεσθαι…δεσπόταις | doulous…hypotassesthai…despotais | ”servants/slaves…to submit…to [their] masters” | δεσπότης = master/lord (household authority, distinct from κύριος) | “bondservants to be submissive to their own masters” (ESV) | Household-code submission extended to the master/servant relationship | HIGH. Reuse ইনবা; মপু (master, distinct usage from the established মপু ইবুংগো Lordship title — flag to ensure translators do not conflate an ordinary household master with the divine title for Christ). |
| πᾶσαν πίστιν ἐνδεικνυμένους ἀγαθήν | pasan pistin endeiknymenous agathēn | ”showing all good faith/fidelity” | πίστις here means trustworthiness/faithfulness in conduct, not saving faith | ”show themselves…trustworthy in every way” (ESV) | An important nuance: not every occurrence of πίστις in Titus is the saving-faith doctrine term; context must always be checked (echoing the baseline’s context-sensitivity note for “called”) | HIGH. Distinct rendering needed here from থাজবা (saving faith): propose থাজবা য়াবা (trustworthy/reliable), a related but contextually distinct compound, to avoid implying servants must exercise saving faith toward their masters. |
| ἵνα τὴν διδασκαλίαν τὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ κοσμῶσιν | hina tēn didaskalian tēn tou sōtēros hēmōn theou kosmōsin | ”that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior” | κοσμέω = to adorn/beautify/order (root of “cosmos”) | “so that in every respect they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior” (ESV) | Good conduct beautifies/commends sound doctrine to outside observers — direct link between the “Sound Doctrine” and “Good Works” doctrines named in this curriculum | HIGH. অচুম্বা তম্বিবা (sound doctrine) + মফম ফজহনবা (to beautify/adorn); reuse অহানবিরকপা for Savior. |
Chapter 3 (Titus 3:9-15)
Verses 3:1-8 are treated in the core-passage section above (Part 1); this section covers only 3:9-15.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μωρὰς…ζητήσεις (ζήτησις) | mōras…zētēseis | ”foolish…controversies/speculations” | ζήτησις = a seeking, investigation, or (negatively) a disputatious question | ”foolish controversies” (ESV) | Key term for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies.” Names the specific problem-behavior the chapter warns against | HIGH. Proposed অকান্বা ৱানবা (akanba wanba, “quarrelsome debate/dispute”). |
| γενεαλογίας | genealogias | ”genealogies” | speculative ancestral-lineage disputes, likely tied to the “circumcision party” controversy of 1:10 | ”genealogies” (most versions) | A concrete example of unprofitable controversy | MEDIUM. য়ুম্নাক্কী মরুওইশিং ৱারী (clan/lineage-descent disputes). Flag: given real cultural weight of yumnak (clan) lineage identity in Meitei culture, ensure this is taught as a specific first-century controversy-type, not a general dismissal of lineage/genealogical interest as such. |
| ἔρεις καὶ μάχας νομικάς | ereis kai machas nomikas | ”quarrels and fights about the law” | ἔρις = strife; μάχη = fight/quarrel; νομικός = pertaining to the [Mosaic] law | ”quarrels and fights about the law” (ESV) | Legal-code disputes, connecting back to the “commandments of men” (1:14) and νόμος (law) vocabulary | MEDIUM. য়াথাংগী মতাংদা কাজবা (fighting/quarreling over the law), reusing established য়াথাং (law). |
| ἀνωφελεῖς καὶ μάταιοι | anōpheleis kai mataioi | ”unprofitable and worthless/futile” | direct negative counterpart to 3:8’s ὠφέλιμα (“beneficial”) | “unprofitable and worthless” (ESV) | Deliberate contrast with the letter’s positive “good and beneficial” (3:8) and “good works” refrain | LOW. ফায়দা লৈতবা (of no benefit). |
| αἱρετικὸν ἄνθρωπον (αἱρετικός) | hairetikon anthrōpon | ”a divisive/factious person” | αἱρετικός here means “causing division/sectarian” (the root of English “heretic,” but the NT sense is primarily relational/factional, not strictly doctrinal-content-based) | “a person who stirs up division” (ESV); “a divisive person” (NIV) | THE key term for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies.” Names the person-category to be disciplined | HIGH. Proposed খেৎনবা মীওই (khetnaba miwoi, “a dividing/separating person”). Human/native-speaker review recommended given the real, currently sensitive state of inter-community and inter-denominational division in Manipur — this must be taught as internal church discipline for doctrinal/relational division, explicitly distinguished from ethnic-political factionalism or clan-based social sanction (yumnak ostracism practices). |
| μίαν καὶ δευτέραν νουθεσίαν | mian kai deuteran nouthesian | ”a first and second warning” | νουθεσία = admonition/warning | ”one or two warnings” (ESV) | Establishes a graduated, patient discipline process, not immediate expulsion | LOW. অহানবা অমসুং অনীশুবা চেকশিন-হায়জবা (first and second warning). |
| παραιτοῦ (παραιτέομαι) | paraitou | ”reject/have nothing to do with/avoid” | to refuse, decline association with | ”have nothing more to do with him” (ESV) | Final step after repeated unheeded warning | MEDIUM. লৌশিনদবা (to have nothing to do with/reject). |
| ἐξέστραπται…αὐτοκατάκριτος | exestraptai…autokatakritos | ”has been warped/perverted…self-condemned” | ἐκστρέφω = to twist/pervert; αὐτοκατάκριτος = a rare compound, “self-condemned” (condemned by one’s own conduct/conscience) | “warped…self-condemned” (ESV) | The divisive person’s own persistence in error, not the church’s judgment alone, constitutes the condemnation | LOW. মথা ৱারী নংশিল্লবা…মশা মশানা মায়োক্না লৈরবা (perverted…self-condemned). |
| ἵνα μηδὲν αὐτοῖς λείπῃ / εἰς τὰς ἀναγκαίας χρείας / ἵνα μὴ ὦσιν ἄκαρποι | hina mēden autois leipē / eis tas anagkaias chreias / hina mē ōsin akarpoi | ”that nothing may be lacking to them / for pressing needs / that they may not be unfruitful” | χρεία = need; ἀναγκαῖος = urgent/necessary; ἄκαρπος = unfruitful | ”so that they will not lack anything…pressing needs…not be unfruitful” (ESV) | Closing practical instruction ties “good works” (καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι, echoing 3:8) to concrete material provision for fellow believers — good works are not abstract | MEDIUM. ফজবা থবক (reuse), তাংথিনা মথৌ ওইবা (urgent/pressing need), মরোল লৈতবা (unfruitful). |
| ταῦτά ἐστιν καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα (recap at 3:14, echoing 3:8) | — | — | — | — | Bookends the chapter’s good-works instruction | (already covered at 3:8) |
| Ἡ χάρις μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν | Hē charis meta pantōn hymōn | ”grace be with you all” | standard Pauline closing benediction | ”grace be with you all” (most versions) | Closes the letter exactly as it opened (1:4), bracketing the whole book with grace | CRITICAL. Reuse established grace term মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং exactly; per the baseline’s theological-consistency rules, this closing benediction should match any other Pauline closing benediction rendering used elsewhere in this curriculum’s materials. |
Proper names in 3:12-13 (Ἀρτεμᾶν, Τυχικόν, Νικόπολιν, Ζηνᾶν, Ἀπολλῶν) and terms νομικόν (here “the lawyer,” a profession, distinct from the adjectival νομικάς of 3:9), σπούδασον/σπουδαίως (be diligent), προπέμπω (help on one’s way), παραχειμάσαι (to winter): Low risk. Standard proper-name transliteration and ordinary vocabulary; no doctrinal load. Note the two distinct senses of the νομικ- root in this chapter (νομικάς, “pertaining to the law,” 3:9; τὸν νομικόν, “the lawyer/legal expert” as Zenas’s profession, 3:13) — flag only so Phase 2 translators do not force a single rendering for both.
Summary of Cross-Book Findings
- Titus concentrates an unusually dense cluster of “appearing” (ἐπιφαίνω/ἐπιφάνεια) and “Savior” (σωτήρ) vocabulary not present at this density in Romans. Both collide directly with live Manipuri Vaishnava avatar-descent theology and require the highest level of translator care, consistent with — and extending — the baseline’s existing Critical-risk incarnation/deity-of-Christ framework.
- Titus 2:13 and 3:4-6 supply some of the clearest single-passage deity-of-Christ evidence in the NT (shared “Savior” title for Father and Son; single-article “our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” construction) and must be flagged for mandatory theologian review wherever they occur in curriculum materials.
- Titus 3:5’s παλιγγενεσία (“regeneration”) is the single highest new lexical risk in the book: it is linguistically the closest concept in this curriculum to the already-forbidden “rebirth/reincarnation” (পুনর্জন্ম) term, yet denotes the opposite theological reality (a one-time, non-cyclical, Spirit-wrought new creation). This deserves its own dedicated translator note wherever it appears in Phase 2 output.
- The σώφρων/self-control word-family and the παιδεύω/training word-family together form the linguistic backbone of “Grace That Trains for Godly Living,” recurring across both household-code material (ch. 2) and the core theological summary (2:11-12) — Phase 2 must render these with a single consistent term-family so the curriculum’s central pedagogical metaphor (grace as trainer) remains visible to the Manipuri reader across the whole book.
- Titus 1:15’s purity polemic is the book’s most acute point of contact with the live, dual Manipuri ritual-purity landscape (Sanamahi Lai Haraoba purification and Vaishnava temple/food purity codes) and requires explicit theologian-reviewed translator notes distinguishing Paul’s inward-conscience argument from either ritual system.
- Chapter 1’s elder/overseer qualification catalogue is the primary textual basis for the “Qualifications for Elders” doctrine and introduces the letter’s only extended technical-office vocabulary (πρεσβύτερος, ἐπίσκοπος, οἰκονόμος), none of which appears in the Romans baseline and all of which require careful distinction from existing Meitei religious-office categories (village/clan elder, Vaishnava temple hierarchy, Sanamahi ritual specialists).
- No chapter in Titus is theologically inert; every chapter (1, 2, 3) contributes load-bearing vocabulary, confirmed by full first-to-last review as required.
