Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — Colossians (Koine Greek → Manipuri)

Methodology and Scope

This analysis covers the entire book of Colossians, four chapters, in the original Koine Greek, from first verse to last. The core passage, Colossians 1:15–20 (the “Christ Hymn”), receives full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields.

Baseline reuse rule: Any term already fixed in the Romans-curriculum translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly below and marked [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM]. New terms required by Colossians’ distinct doctrinal content (the cosmic supremacy of Christ, the “fullness” language, household codes, the false-teaching polemic, etc.) are marked [NEW] and given provisional Manipuri renderings for theologian/native-speaker confirmation, following the same provisional-flagging convention the baseline itself uses for terms like “covenant” and “imputed righteousness.”

Comparative-religion lens: Consistent with the baseline’s dual-tradition mandate, every Critical/High risk below is checked against both live Manipuri religious systems — Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai forest deities, Lai Haraoba, maiba/maibi ritual specialists) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion, the Ras Lila tradition, avatara theology, bhakti practice) — not treated as a historical sequence but as two currently practiced traditions.

CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15–20 (Verse-by-Verse)

Colossians 1:15 — “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Term: image (εἰκών)

  • Original: εἰκών | Transliteration: eikōn
  • Literal meaning: a visible likeness, form, or representation of something
  • Semantic range: portrait; visual likeness; a coin’s stamped image; a manifestation that makes an invisible reality perceptible
  • English variants: image, likeness, form
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the exact, personal manifestation of God’s invisible nature — not a symbolic representation but the very disclosure of who God is (cf. John 1:18; Heb 1:3)
  • Manipuri rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী মচাক (Tengban Mapugi machak) — “the machak (form/likeness) of God” — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: CRITICAL. মচাক (a neutral Meitei word for “form/shape/likeness”) is deliberately chosen over মূর্তি (murti), the specific term for a consecrated Vaishnava temple image/statue of Krishna or another deity. Using মূর্তি here would invite readers to hear “image of God” as one more devotional icon among the murtis they already know from temple worship. This doctrine must be taught explicitly: Christ is not a crafted representation of God to be venerated as an object, but the living, personal self-disclosure of God’s own nature.

Term: invisible (ἀόρατος)

  • Original: ἀόρατος | Transliteration: aoratos
  • Literal meaning: not able to be seen
  • Semantic range: unseen; hidden from sight; imperceptible to physical sight
  • English variants: invisible, unseen
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s essential nature is beyond ordinary human perception; Christ alone makes the unseen God seeable
  • Manipuri rendering: উদ্বা য়াদবা (udaba yadaba, “cannot be seen”) — descriptive, Low risk
  • Risk notes: Low. No known competing category; both Sanamahi’s Atiya Guru Sidaba and general folk cosmology already treat the highest divine reality as unseen, so this poses no collision, only requires natural phrasing.

Term: firstborn (πρωτότοκος)

  • Original: πρωτότοκος | Transliteration: prōtotokos
  • Literal meaning: first to be born
  • Semantic range: in Jewish usage, a title of supreme rank, honor, and inheritance-right (cf. Psalm 89:27, where “firstborn” = “highest of the kings of the earth”), not necessarily literal birth-order; can denote preeminence and heirship rather than temporal sequence
  • English variants: firstborn, preeminent one, highest in rank
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ holds supreme rank and inheritance-right over all creation as its Lord and heir — the verse is making an ownership/authority claim, not a claim that Christ was the first entity to come into existence
  • Manipuri rendering: মমাংগী মচানুপা (mamanggi machanupa, “the foremost/preeminent son”) — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: CRITICAL — the single highest-stakes term in this passage for a Meitei audience. The baseline Language Package already documents that Sanamahi is remembered in Sanamahi tradition as the elder brother of the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba — i.e., Meitei religious memory already has a live, specific “which divine sibling came first” category, and Meitei kinship custom places real inheritance and authority weight on birth order among sons. A literal “first one born” rendering risks being heard either (a) as an Arian-adjacent claim that Christ is the first created being, ranked within a divine family sequence, or (b) as directly mapping onto the Sanamahi/Pakhangba elder-younger sibling hierarchy. This curriculum must explicitly teach that πρωτότοκος here names Christ’s supreme rank and universal inheritance-right as Creator, not his position in a sequence of divine births. This term requires mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence (1:15, 1:18).

Term: all creation (πᾶσα κτίσις)

  • Original: πᾶσα κτίσις | Transliteration: pasa ktisis
  • Literal meaning: every created thing / the whole created order
  • Semantic range: the sum of everything that has been made; can refer to the physical universe, to humanity, or (as here) to the entire cosmos including spiritual beings
  • English variants: all creation, every creature, the whole created order
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ stands in a category above and prior to everything that exists, because everything that exists was made through him (v.16)
  • Manipuri rendering: শেমবা পুম্নমক (shemba pumnamak, “all created/made things”) — [NEW, High/Critical]
  • Risk notes: High/Critical. Sanamahi tradition holds its own detailed cosmogony (Atiya Guru Sidaba, Sanamahi, Pakhangba, and Leimarel Sidabi as agents/figures in the world’s origin). Colossians 1:15-16 is not merely a philosophical statement here but a direct, competing cosmological claim: Christ, not the figures of Sanamahi cosmology, is the sole agent and rightful owner of all that exists. This must be taught as a substantive claim, not softened into generic “God made everything” language that leaves the specific competing cosmogony unaddressed.

Colossians 1:16 — “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

Term: were created (ἐκτίσθη)

  • Original: ἐκτίσθη | Transliteration: ektisthē
  • Literal meaning: aorist passive of κτίζω, “were made/brought into being”
  • Semantic range: the divine act of bringing something into existence from nothing or shaping it into ordered form
  • English variants: were created, were made, came into being
  • Contextual theological meaning: a single decisive past act; all things owe their origin to Christ
  • Manipuri rendering: শেমখি (shemkhi, “was/were made/created”) — Low-Medium risk, natural extension of শেমবা above.

Term: thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities (θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι)

  • Original: θρόνοι / κυριότητες / ἀρχαί / ἐξουσίαι | Transliteration: thronoi / kyriotētes / archai / exousiai
  • Literal meaning: seats of rule / lordships / rulers-in-first-place / permissions-to-act-with-authority — a fourfold stacking of terms for ranked spiritual/cosmic powers
  • Semantic range: in Jewish apocalyptic and early Christian usage, this cluster names an entire hierarchy of angelic and spiritual powers, whether good or fallen, believed to govern nations, elements, and cosmic affairs
  • English variants: thrones, dominions/lordships, rulers/principalities, authorities/powers
  • Contextual theological meaning: whatever hierarchy of spiritual powers exists — of any rank — Christ made them, and (per 2:15) has publicly triumphed over and disarmed the hostile ones; no spiritual power stands independent of or equal to him
  • Manipuri rendering: ফম, মপু ওইবা, পাংথোক্পা মপুশিং, পাংথোক্পা থাওয়াইশিং (pham, mapu oiba, pangthokpa mapushing, pangthokpa thawaishing — “thrones, lordships, ruling-lords, ruling-spirits”) — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: CRITICAL. This is one of the most consequential collision points in the whole book. Both live Manipuri traditions maintain populated hierarchies of intermediary spiritual beings that receive ongoing ritual attention: Sanamahism’s Umang Lai forest/guardian deities (honored at sacred groves through Lai Haraoba, approached through a maibi’s ritual trance) and, in the Vaishnava system, ranked hierarchies of devas/demigods under Vishnu. Colossians 1:16 makes the same kind of claim about “thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” that it later (2:15) develops into “he disarmed them, triumphing over them.” This is not an abstract angelology point for a Meitei audience — it is a direct claim that whatever spiritual powers exist in either living system, Christ made them and reigns over them; they are not to be feared, appeased, or venerated in parallel with Christ. Mandatory theologian review.

Term: through him and for him (δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτόν)

  • Original: δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτόν | Transliteration: di’ autou kai eis auton
  • Literal meaning: through him and unto/into him
  • Semantic range: agency (“through”) and goal/purpose (“for/unto”) — creation’s means and creation’s destination are both Christ
  • English variants: through him and for him, by him and for him
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is both the instrumental cause and the final purpose of the entire created order — nothing exists apart from or beyond reference to him
  • Manipuri rendering: মখোয়দগী অমসুং মখোয়গী ওইনা (makhoidagi amasung makhoigi oina, “through him and for/belonging to him”) — Medium risk, needs careful construction to preserve both agency and purpose senses distinctly.

Colossians 1:17 — “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Term: before all things (πρὸ πάντων)

  • Original: πρὸ πάντων | Transliteration: pro pantōn
  • Literal meaning: prior to/in front of all things
  • Semantic range: temporal priority (existed before everything else) and/or rank priority (supreme over everything)
  • English variants: before all things, above all things, preeminent over all
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s eternal pre-existence and supremacy — he did not come into being with creation but stands prior to and above it
  • Manipuri rendering: পুম্নমক্তগী মমাংদা লৈবা (pumnamaktagi mamangda leiba, “existing before/in front of all things”) — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: Critical, closely paired with the “firstborn” risk above — this verse is precisely what guards against the Arian-adjacent misreading of πρωτότοκος: Christ is before all things, therefore not himself one of the created things. This verse must always be taught together with v.15 to prevent the misreading.

Term: hold together (συνέστηκεν)

  • Original: συνέστηκεν | Transliteration: synestēken
  • Literal meaning: stand together, cohere, be held in a consistent state
  • Semantic range: to be sustained, to cohere as a unified whole, to be kept from disintegrating
  • English variants: hold together, are sustained, cohere, consist
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not only creation’s originating cause but its ongoing sustaining principle — the universe holds together only because of his continuous sustaining power
  • Manipuri rendering: মখোয়দা লৈবা য়াউদুনা লৈরি (makhoida leiba yaoduna leiri, “continues to exist held together in him”) — Medium-High risk: must avoid language that could be heard as an impersonal cosmic law/principle (echoing ৱাইফম-style fate language forbidden elsewhere in the Language Package for providence/election); this is personal, ongoing sustaining by Christ himself, not an impersonal natural order.

Colossians 1:18 — “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”

Term: head (κεφαλή)

  • Original: κεφαλή | Transliteration: kephalē
  • Literal meaning: the physical head of a body
  • Semantic range: literal body-part; metaphorically, source, authority, life-giving origin of a body
  • English variants: head, chief, source
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is both the church’s ruling authority and its life-source, as a head governs and gives coordinated life to a body
  • Manipuri rendering: কোক (kok, “head”) — [NEW, Medium]
  • Risk notes: Medium. The literal body-part word transfers the metaphor reasonably naturally, but must be taught with both senses explicit (authority + life-source), not merely “leader.”

Term: body (σῶμα)

  • Original: σῶμα | Transliteration: sōma
  • Literal meaning: a physical body
  • Semantic range: literal body; corporate/collective body (a community understood as one organism)
  • English variants: body
  • Contextual theological meaning: the church is one living organism, united to and animated by Christ its head
  • Manipuri rendering: হক্চাং (hakchang, “body”) — [NEW, Medium/High]
  • Risk notes: Medium/High. Must be distinguished from the clan-body (yumnak) as the primary corporate-identity category in traditional Meitei kinship, and from any royal-body symbolism tied to the historic Meitei kingship’s descent from the serpent-deity Pakhangba. The church-as-body is a spiritual, cross-clan, cross-community organism united in Christ, not a lineage-body.

Term: church (ἐκκλησία)[REUSED FROM ROMANS TM]

  • Manipuri: কলিসিয়া (kalisiya) — Medium risk, per baseline notes; must remain distinct from মন্দির (Vaishnava temple) and Umang Lai sacred-grove worship sites.

Term: beginning (ἀρχή)

  • Original: ἀρχή | Transliteration: archē
  • Literal meaning: beginning, origin, first cause
  • Semantic range: starting point in a sequence; source/origin from which something proceeds; first in rank
  • English variants: beginning, origin, source, first principle
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not merely first in a temporal sequence of resurrected people but the very source/originating principle of the new-creation resurrection life the church shares
  • Manipuri rendering: হৌরকপা (houraba, “the beginning/origin”) — [NEW, High]
  • Risk notes: High. Risk of being heard as a merely temporal “starting point” rather than as source/originating cause; also requires distinguishing from Sanamahi cosmogonic “beginning” narratives (the primal void/Ashiba preceding creation, and Atiya Guru Sidaba as ultimate source). Must be taught as “originating source,” paralleling the “before all things” claim in v.17.

Term: firstborn from the dead (πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν) — see πρωτότοκος analysis at v.15; here specifically:

  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the first to rise bodily, never to die again, inaugurating and guaranteeing the resurrection of all who are united to him — a claim of rank/priority-in-achievement, not a claim about how many people had physically died before him
  • Manipuri rendering: সিবদগী মমাংগী মচানুপা (sibadagi mamanggi machanupa, combining the reused resurrection term with the “firstborn” rendering) — Critical, mandatory theologian review; must always be paired with [REUSED] সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা for “resurrection” itself, and must never be rendered with পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), per the baseline’s standing forbidden-substitution rule.

Term: preeminent (πρωτεύων)

  • Original: πρωτεύων | Transliteration: prōteuōn
  • Literal meaning: to hold first place
  • Semantic range: to be supreme, to have the highest rank, to be first in every respect
  • English variants: preeminent, first in everything, supreme
  • Contextual theological meaning: the purpose-clause summarizing vv.15-18 — in every category (creation, church, resurrection), Christ holds unrivaled supremacy
  • Manipuri rendering: পুম্নমক্তগী মথৌ চাংবা (pumnamaktagi mathou changba, “supreme/foremost over all”) — [NEW, Medium]

Colossians 1:19 — “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.”

Term: fullness (πλήρωμα)

  • Original: πλήρωμα | Transliteration: plērōma
  • Literal meaning: that which fills; the full measure/complete amount of something
  • Semantic range: completeness, total sum, the entirety of a quality or substance; in early Christian/Gnostic-adjacent debate, a technical term for the totality of divine being/attributes
  • English variants: fullness, entirety, full measure
  • Contextual theological meaning: the entire fullness of God’s own nature — not a fragment, emanation, or partial share of deity — permanently and personally resides in Christ
  • Manipuri rendering: মপুংফাবা (mapungphaba, “fullness/completeness”) — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: CRITICAL, one of the highest-stakes terms in the book. This term is built from the same morpheme already used in the baseline Romans package for “effectual” in “effectual calling” (মপুং ফাবা কৌবা — a “fully accomplished” call), so its reuse here is structurally consistent. The doctrinal danger is specific and severe: Gaudiya Vaishnavism, as practiced in Manipur, ranks Vishnu’s avatars by degree of completeness, with Krishna specifically titled svayam bhagavan / purnavatara — the “full” or “complete” descent/incarnation, in explicit contrast to “partial” avatars (Rama, Narasimha, etc.) in the recognized avatar sequence celebrated through the Ras Lila tradition. “The fullness of God dwells in Christ” risks being heard by a Meitei Vaishnava-background reader as simply confirming that Jesus, like Krishna, is a “complete” avatar among others — one more purna-avatara claim within the existing graded-avatar framework, rather than the unique, exclusive, permanent embodiment of the entire Godhead in one eternal Son. This doctrine must be taught with explicit, direct contrast to the purna-avatara concept, not left to be inferred. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence (1:19; 2:9).

Term: was pleased (εὐδόκησεν)

  • Original: εὐδόκησεν | Transliteration: eudokēsen
  • Literal meaning: thought it good, was well-pleased, resolved/determined with favor
  • Semantic range: a settled, favorable divine decision
  • English variants: was pleased, willed, determined
  • Contextual theological meaning: this indwelling was God’s own sovereign, favorable choice, not an accident or a lesser being’s achievement
  • Manipuri rendering: তেংবাং মপুনা পেন্না খন্নবা (Tengban Mapuna penna khannaba, “God resolved/was pleased”) — Medium risk, standard.

Term: to dwell (κατοικῆσαι)

  • Original: κατοικῆσαι | Transliteration: katoikēsai
  • Literal meaning: to settle down and live permanently in a place, as a permanent resident (contrasted with παροικέω, temporary sojourning)
  • Semantic range: permanent, settled residence, as opposed to a temporary visit
  • English variants: to dwell, to live permanently, to make one’s home
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s fullness did not visit Christ temporarily but took up permanent residence — directly relevant to distinguishing incarnation from a temporary avatara-descent
  • Manipuri rendering: লৈবা (leiba, “to dwell/remain”) qualified as permanent — Medium-High risk; the permanence must be made explicit in context, distinguishing this from the repeatable, occasion-specific divine descents of avatara theology.

Colossians 1:20 — “and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

Term: reconcile (ἀποκαταλλάξαι)

  • Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι | Transliteration: apokatallaxai
  • Literal meaning: to exchange back into a former state; to restore to a right relationship after estrangement
  • Semantic range: restoring broken relationship; settling a state of hostility into peace; a legal/relational term implying prior estrangement now resolved
  • English variants: reconcile, restore to favor, make at peace
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s cross-work objectively resolves the hostility between God and a rebellious creation (and, per v.21, between God and sinful humanity specifically) — a completed, historical, once-for-all act, not an ongoing ritual process
  • Manipuri rendering: ইনগবা ওইহনবা (ingba oihanba, literally “causing [things] to become at peace”) — [NEW, Critical]
  • Risk notes: CRITICAL. This coinage deliberately follows the baseline’s own established compounding pattern (cf. অচুম্বা ওইহনবা, “justification,” literally “causing to become righteous”) using the already-established reused term ইনগবা (“peace,” per baseline) as its base. This must be sharply distinguished from: (a) the atonement/purification rituals (prāyaścitta) of Vaishnava practice performed to remove ritual offense; (b) the purification rites undertaken before Lai Haraoba to maintain right relationship with the Umang Lai; and (c) the bhakti framework in which nearness to Krishna is cultivated through ongoing devotional service. Reconciliation in Colossians is a completed historical event accomplished once, at the cross, by Christ — not a repeatable ritual or a devotional achievement requiring maintenance. Mandatory theologian review.

Term: making peace (εἰρηνοποιήσας) — builds on [REUSED] ইনগবা (peace)

  • Manipuri: ইনগবা শেম্বা (ingba shemba, “making/creating peace”) — High risk; must be read together with reconciliation above, not as a separate lesser claim.

Term: blood of his cross (αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ)

  • Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ | Transliteration: haima tou staurou
  • Literal meaning: the blood [shed] at/by the cross
  • Semantic range: sacrificial, atoning bloodshed; the specific, historical execution of Jesus by crucifixion
  • English variants: blood of the cross, blood shed on the cross
  • Contextual theological meaning: the specific historical means of reconciliation — Christ’s literal, bodily death by crucifixion — not a symbolic or generalized “sacrifice” concept
  • Manipuri rendering: মহাক্কী ক্রুসকী ঈ (mahakki kroski ee, “his cross’s blood”) — High risk; the historical particularity (a real death by crucifixion, at a specific place and time) must be preserved against any tendency to abstract it into a timeless devotional symbol.

Terminological cluster caution (Chapter 1): πλήρωμα (fullness, v.19), ἐπίγνωσις (full knowledge, v.9), and τέλειος (mature/complete, v.28) all belong to a single Greek semantic field of “completeness.” This analysis renders all three using compounds built on the same Manipuri morpheme মপুংফাবা for structural consistency with the baseline’s own practice (cf. মপুং ফাবা কৌবা, “effectual calling”). Phase 2 translators must take care that this shared morpheme does not blur three theologically distinct claims (Christ’s own completeness of deity; believers’ complete knowledge; believers’ complete maturity) into one another. Recommend distinct disambiguating qualifiers at first use of each in any single lesson.

Requires explicit theological framing given genuine ascetic renunciant practice among some Manipuri Vaishnava devotees (already flagged গোসাঞি in the baseline) and fasting/austerity observance in local devotional life

wrath of God (ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ)hē orgē tou theouGod’s angerrighteous, judicial divine response to sin, distinct from a capricious or appeasable deity’s angerwrath of GodGod’s settled, judicial opposition to sin, decisively addressed at the cross, not an ongoing force requiring ritual appeasement[NEW] তেংবাং মপুগী অকাংবা (Tengban Mapugi akangba)High — must be distinguished from an appeasable Umang Lai deity’s displeasure (addressed through maibi/maiba-mediated ritual) or a Vaishnava deity’s displeasure requiring ritual remedy; God’s wrath is a personal, righteous, judicial category, definitively answered at the cross (1:20), not a recurring force to be managed
idolatry (εἰδωλολατρία) — “covetousness, which is idolatry”eidōlolatriaimage-worship, service to idolsworship directed to a false object, whether a literal image or (as here) an inordinate desire functioning as oneidolatryPaul names covetousness itself as functioning like devotion to a false god, displacing God from his rightful place[NEW] মূর্তি থাবা-চাংবা (murti thaba-changba, “idol-image worship”)CRITICAL — directly names image/murti veneration, which is a live, prestigious, and central feature of Manipuri Vaishnava temple devotion and Umang Lai sacred-grove worship. This term must be handled with careful pastoral framing: Paul’s specific point in context is that covetousness itself operates as a rival devotion, not primarily a blanket denunciation of any community’s worship practice. This requires mandatory human theologian guidance on pastoral framing so that the text’s actual argument lands without being experienced as a gratuitous, decontextualized attack on neighbors’ religious practice in the current Manipur interfaith climate — while never softening the text’s own claim.

Chapter 4 coverage note: Chapter 4 introduces no major new doctrinal categories beyond what chapters 1–3 establish; its load-bearing terms are largely reused (mystery, mission, wisdom, thanksgiving, church) or are proper-name/greeting material requiring only consistent transliteration. The two genuinely new items — the “open door”/mystery-of-Christ prayer request and the “church in her house” reference — are treated above because of their direct doctrinal (mission) and cultural-collision (household-shrine) significance respectively.

Cross-Chapter Doctrinal Consistency Flags (for Phase 2)

  1. “Firstborn” (πρωτότοκος, 1:15 and 1:18) must always be rendered with the same base compound (মমাংগী মচানুপা / মমাংগী মচানুপা সিবদগী) and never abbreviated to a bare “first son” phrase that could be heard through the Sanamahi/Pakhangba elder-brother lens.
  2. “Fullness” (πλήρωμα, 1:19; 2:9) and “deity” (θεότης, 2:9) must always carry the explicit purna-avatara contrast note in any accompanying teaching material; this is the single highest-density collision point with Manipuri Vaishnavism in the entire book.
  3. “Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” (1:16) and their disarming (2:15) must be taught together as one argument, not separately, so the Umang Lai/deva-hierarchy contrast lands with its intended force.
  4. “Reconciliation” (1:20-22) must reuse the same compound ইনগবা ওইহনবা throughout the book and must never be confused with the related but distinct “forgiveness” (ময়ামদা কোকপা) or “redemption” (মথৌ পীদুনা থাদোকপা) terms — all three name distinct, complementary aspects of Christ’s cross-work.
  5. “Old self / new self” (3:9-10) must never be rendered in any way that could suggest reincarnation/rebirth (পুনর্জন্ম remains forbidden throughout, per the baseline rule for resurrection, now extended to this related identity-transformation language).
  6. “Idolatry” (3:5) requires mandatory theologian sign-off on pastoral framing before any lesson using this term is finalized, given its direct, specific naming of practices central to both living Manipuri religious traditions.
  7. Baptism (2:12) is a genuinely new Critical-risk term for the Language Package (not present in the Romans baseline registry) and must be added to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation begins (see companion glossary file, 08).

This document extends, and in no place contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package. All reused terms are carried forward unchanged. New terms are flagged for confirmation per the baseline’s own established practice for provisional renderings.
