Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 2 Timothy (Full Book)
Scope and Method
This document maps every Old Testament quotation, allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern found in 2 Timothy, chapter by chapter, first to last, and cross-references each to its parallel in the companion Romans Language Package already governing this destination-language project. Citations are given in normalized Book chapter:verse form (e.g., “Genesis 15:6,” “Romans 1:3-4”) so they can be machine-matched across curricula.
Column definitions:
- Passage — the 2 Timothy reference under discussion.
- Theme — the curriculum doctrine or sub-theme it serves (mapped to the seven named doctrines where applicable).
- Related Character(s) — biblical figures named or typologically invoked.
- OT/NT Connection — the specific quotation, allusion, or canonical parallel, normalized.
- Translation Sensitivity — risk tier and grounded reason, keyed to the doctrine risk categories already established in the baseline and extended in
07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md.
Where a verse range contributes no new OT/NT connection or doctrinal load, it is explicitly marked “Reviewed — no new cross-reference” rather than silently omitted, per full-book-coverage mandate.
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 1:1-2 | Apostleship; Grace, Mercy, Peace greeting formula | Paul, Timothy | Parallels Romans 1:1-7 greeting structure; Grace/Peace pair reuses Romans 1:7 exactly | Critical — Grace (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং) and Peace (ইনগবা) MUST reuse fixed Romans TM terms verbatim. Mercy (ἔλεος) is a new term for this curriculum; see Chapter-1 note below on retroactive Romans consistency. |
| 2 Timothy 1:3 | Thanksgiving; household faith heritage | Paul’s forefathers | Echoes Romans 1:8-9 (Paul’s habitual thanksgiving in prayer) | Low — reuse fixed TM থাগৎচরি (thanksgiving) exactly. |
| 2 Timothy 1:5 | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | Timothy, Eunice, Lois | Allusion: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (Shema, generational transmission of God’s word within the household) | Medium — household-level type of the multi-generational transmission developed fully at 2 Timothy 2:2; must be taught alongside Deuteronomy 6 as the OT root pattern of intentional, examined (not merely inherited-by-custom) household faith transmission, distinct from ritual-knowledge transmission within a maiba/maibi lineage. |
| 2 Timothy 1:6-7 | Spiritual Gifts; Perseverance under Suffering | Paul, Timothy | Allusion: Numbers 27:18-23 (Moses commissions Joshua by laying on of hands, transmitting authority) | Medium — laying-on-of-hands commissioning pattern; reuse fixed TM থাওয়াইগী খুদোল (spiritual gifts). Must not be read as parallel to a maibi’s trance-transferred ritual power. |
| 2 Timothy 1:8-9 | Perseverance under Suffering; Grace apart from works | Paul, Timothy | Direct doctrinal parallel: Romans 9:11 (“not because of works but because of him who calls”) and Romans 11:5-6 (grace vs. works); “before the ages began” echoes Titus 1:2, Ephesians 1:4 | CRITICAL — this is 2 Timothy’s clearest restatement of the Romans grace-versus-works argument (see baseline grace entry). The Manipuri rendering of “not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace” MUST carry the same force as Romans 11:5-6 and must resist a bhakti-merit reading (grace as responsive to Timothy’s own devotion). Reuse fixed TM মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং exactly. |
| 2 Timothy 1:10 | Assurance of Reward; Incarnation; Resurrection | Christ Jesus, our Savior | Allusion: Isaiah 25:8 (“he will swallow up death forever”), echoed again in 1 Corinthians 15:54-55; ἐπιφάνεια here names Christ’s first appearing (incarnation), paired with 4:1/4:8’s future appearing | CRITICAL — ἐπιφάνεια (appearing) must be taught here as the historical, once-for-all incarnation event (reuse fixed TM মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা for the underlying doctrine), explicitly distinguished from the recurring avatar-epiphany festival calendar (Krishna Janmashtami, Ras Lila) — see 07 analysis. |
| 2 Timothy 1:11-12 | Apostleship; Perseverance under Suffering | Paul | Reuses Romans’ apostleship self-description pattern (cf. Romans 1:1, 11:13) | Medium — reuse fixed TM তবিদগী থাবিরকপা (apostle) exactly. |
| 2 Timothy 1:12b-14 | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Guarding Sound Doctrine | Paul, Timothy, Holy Spirit | New covenant “deposit” (παραθήκη) language; conceptually parallel to the OT priestly/Levitical charge to guard the sanctuary and its furnishings (cf. Numbers 3:7-8, 18:5) as a type of guarding a sacred trust | CRITICAL — see 07/08 analysis; the entrusted-deposit concept (থমখিবা মথৌ) is this book’s most theologically load-bearing new collision with guru-paramparā disciplic succession. No Romans-curriculum parallel term exists; this is a genuinely new anchor term requiring its own doctrine-risk-registry entry. |
| 2 Timothy 1:15-18 | Perseverance under Suffering; Assurance of Reward | Phygelus, Hermogenes, Onesiphorus | No direct OT quotation; mercy (ἔλεος) requested for Onesiphorus “on that Day” anticipates the final-judgment reward theme of 4:8 | High — see Mercy note below. |
Chapter 1 note on Mercy (ἔλεος) and cross-curriculum consistency: ἔλεος recurs heavily in Romans (Romans 9:15-18 quoting Exodus 33:19; Romans 9:23; Romans 11:30-32; Romans 12:1; Romans 15:9) but the baseline Romans translation_memory.json does not contain a fixed entry for “mercy.” This is a gap in the existing Language Package, not a new-to-2-Timothy problem alone. The rendering proposed in 08_core_glossary.md (নুংশিবগী তেংবাং) should be treated as the candidate standard term for “mercy” across both curricula, and should be back-ported into the Romans translation memory as a new entry when this Language Package is next revised, per the theological-consistency rule that “the same Manipuri term for the same Greek/English theological term” must be used “across all documents.” Flag for theologian review before either curriculum finalizes.
Chapter 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 2:1-2 | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Guarding Sound Doctrine | Paul, Timothy, “faithful men,” “others also” | Allusion: Deuteronomy 6:7 and Psalm 78:5-7 (teaching God’s word to the next generation); direct verbal cognate of the παραθήκη (1:12, 1:14) | CRITICAL — the four-generation chain (Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others) names the doctrine of “Faithful Transmission” explicitly. Reuse থমখিবা মথৌ পীথোকপা consistently with 1:12/1:14. Must be taught, as in 07 analysis, as transmission of a closed, fixed deposit, contrasted with the guru-paramparā model in which each link may authoritatively adapt what is received. |
| 2 Timothy 2:3-6 | Perseverance under Suffering | soldier, athlete, farmer (unnamed vocational figures) | Allusion: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (athletic-contest imagery for disciplined ministry); general wisdom-literature vocational imagery (cf. Proverbs) | Low-Medium — standard metaphor translation; caution flagged in 07/08 analysis against over-literalizing the soldier image into Meitei historic martial-ethos glorification. |
| 2 Timothy 2:7 | Guarding Sound Doctrine | — | General wisdom-literature exhortation (“the Lord will give you understanding,” cf. Proverbs 2:6) | Low. |
| 2 Timothy 2:8 | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Assurance of Reward | Jesus Christ, David | Direct, near-verbatim doctrinal parallel: Romans 1:3-4 (“descended from David,” “raised from the dead”); Davidic covenant background: 2 Samuel 7:12-16, Psalm 89:3-4, 29, 35-37 | CRITICAL — MANDATORY EXACT-MATCH RENDERING. This verse must use the identical Manipuri renderings already fixed for জিসু (Jesus), ক্রিস্তো (Christ), সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা (resurrection), and দাউদগী চা-চাহি (seed of David) as established in the Romans baseline for 1:3-4. This is the single clearest direct textual echo between the two curricula and should be presented to learners as a deliberate cross-reference: “Paul’s gospel summary in 2 Timothy 2:8 is the same gospel summary as Romans 1:3-4.” |
| 2 Timothy 2:9 | Perseverance under Suffering | Paul | Echoes Romans 1:16 (“I am not ashamed”; “the word of God is not bound” parallels the gospel’s unstoppable advance, cf. Acts 28:31, Philippians 1:12-14) | High — suffering-vocabulary family; see 07/08 analysis on karma-consequence and Umang-Lai-offense-appeasement collision risk. |
| 2 Timothy 2:10 | Salvation; Assurance of Reward | ”the elect,” Christ Jesus | Echoes Romans 8:33 (“God’s elect”) and the election vocabulary of Romans 9-11 | Critical (inherited from baseline salvation/election entries) — reuse fixed TM অহানবা exactly; “the elect” should reuse fixed TM তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (election) construction. |
| 2 Timothy 2:11-13 | Perseverance under Suffering; Assurance of Reward | — (creedal “trustworthy saying”) | Direct doctrinal parallel: Romans 6:5-8 (“if we have died with him… we shall also live with him,” union with Christ in death and resurrection life) | High — the Manipuri rendering of “died with him / live with him” here should match, as closely as Greek-to-Manipuri structural differences allow, whatever rendering pattern the Romans curriculum used for Romans 6:5-8’s union-with-Christ language, so that learners recognize the shared creedal core. Flag for theologian cross-check against the Romans 6 rendering when both curricula are compared. |
| 2 Timothy 2:14-18 | Guarding Sound Doctrine; Apostasy and False Teachers | Hymenaeus, Philetus | Denial that “the resurrection has already happened” directly negates the fixed TM resurrection doctrine (cf. Romans 6:4-5, 1 Corinthians 15:12-19) | Critical — this is a direct false-teaching attack on the resurrection doctrine itself (সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা); must be flagged for theologian review as apostasy-adjacent Critical-tier content, not merely High-tier “false teacher” material. |
| 2 Timothy 2:19 | Guarding Sound Doctrine; Assurance of Salvation | — | Quotation: Numbers 16:5 LXX (“the Lord knows those who are his,” from the Korah rebellion narrative); likely combined echo of Numbers 16:26 and/or Isaiah 52:11 (“depart from iniquity / touch no unclean thing”) | High — this is 2 Timothy’s clearest direct OT quotation. The “firm foundation” (θεμέλιος) imagery also echoes Isaiah 28:16 (cornerstone) and parallels Romans 9:33’s use of the same Isaiah text. Translator note required: this quotation should be flagged and, where a Manipuri OT translation of Numbers 16:5 already exists in the BSI Manipuri Bible, that exact wording should be matched for the quoted clause. |
| 2 Timothy 2:20-21 | Guarding Sound Doctrine; Sanctification | — | Direct doctrinal parallel: Romans 9:19-23 (potter/vessels of honor and dishonor); ultimate OT root: Jeremiah 18:1-6, Isaiah 29:16, Isaiah 45:9 (potter and clay) | High — same vessel/potter image family as Romans 9, but the application differs: Romans 9 uses it for God’s sovereign election purposes; 2 Timothy 2:20-21 uses it for a believer’s own responsibility to cleanse himself for honorable use. Translator note required distinguishing the two applications of one shared image so learners do not conflate election-theology with personal-sanctification exhortation. Reuse থোংগোল (vessel) consistently if this term is also used when 2 Timothy content is cross-taught with Romans 9. |
| 2 Timothy 2:22 | Guarding Sound Doctrine | — | Reuses fixed TM অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness), থাজবা (faith), ইনগবা (peace); echoes Romans 6:12-13 (flee sin, pursue righteousness) and general wisdom-literature “flee/pursue” pattern (cf. Proverbs) | Critical/High (inherited) — exact TM reuse required. |
| 2 Timothy 2:23-26 | Apostasy and False Teachers; Guarding Sound Doctrine | ”the devil” (διάβολος) | The Lord’s servant (κύριου δοῦλον) echoes the OT “servant of the LORD” title (cf. Isaiah 42:1, of the coming Servant, and Joshua 1:1 of Moses) applied here to Timothy’s own ministry posture | Medium-High — see 07/08 analysis on διάβολος (devil) as a specific, personal hostile spiritual being, distinct in category from the Umang Lai or ancestral Apokpa spirits. |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 3:1-5 | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days | — (vice catalogue) | Direct doctrinal/vocabulary parallel: Romans 1:29-31 (Paul’s earlier vice catalogue); broader OT background: Genesis 6:5 (“every intention… only evil continually”), Isaiah 1:2-4, 5:20-23 | High as a cluster — where individual vice-terms overlap with vocabulary already rendered for Romans 1:29-31 in the Romans curriculum, the same Manipuri renderings should be reused for consistency; if the Romans Language Package did not fix individual vice-list terms, this curriculum’s renderings should become the shared standard going forward. βλάσφημοι (blasphemers) touches the fixed TM God/Lord reverence entries — Medium for that item specifically. |
| 2 Timothy 3:6-7 | Apostasy and False Teachers | ”weak women,” “these men” (unnamed) | Echoes false-teacher household-infiltration warnings in Titus 1:11 | Medium — see 08 glossary entry on ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας (knowledge of the truth). |
| 2 Timothy 3:8-9 | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days | Jannes, Jambres, Moses (unnamed but implied) | Direct allusion: Exodus 7:11-22 (Pharaoh’s magicians who opposed Moses, named “Jannes and Jambres” in extra-biblical Jewish tradition, e.g. Targum Pseudo-Jonathan on Exodus 7:11); typological pattern: opposition to God’s true messenger, ultimately exposed | Medium-High — this is the book’s clearest typological pairing: the false teachers of the last days are cast as latter-day Jannes-and-Jambres figures opposing a Moses-like faithful minister (Timothy/Paul). Teach explicitly as a named OT-narrative allusion, not a generic comparison; transliterate names as জান্নেস অমসুং জাম্ব্রেস per baseline proper-name convention. |
| 2 Timothy 3:10-11 | Perseverance under Suffering | Paul, Timothy | Reference to Paul’s own persecution history: Acts 13:50, 14:5, 14:19 (Antioch, Iconium, Lystra); pattern echoes Psalm 34:19 (“many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all”) | High — suffering-vocabulary family (see 07/08); “the Lord rescued me from them all” anticipates 2 Timothy 4:17-18’s rescue language and should use a consistent rescue/deliver verb across both passages. |
| 2 Timothy 3:12 | Perseverance under Suffering; Apostasy and False Teachers | — | Echoes Matthew 5:10-12 (persecution of the righteous is expected, as with the prophets before); reuses εὐσέβεια (godliness) | High — see 08 glossary entry on εὐσέβεια. |
| 2 Timothy 3:13 | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days | ”evil people and impostors” (πλάνοι) | General wisdom-literature deception warnings (cf. Proverbs 14:15, 22:3); echoes the “many will be led astray” language of Matthew 24:11-12 | Medium-High. |
| 2 Timothy 3:14-15 | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | Timothy | Restates 1:5’s household-transmission theme; “sacred writings … from childhood” recalls Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Psalm 119:9-11 (“how can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word”) | Critical/High — core-passage term; see full verse-level treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| 2 Timothy 3:16 | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture | — | Doctrinal parallel: 2 Peter 1:20-21 (“no prophecy… was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”); functional parallel: Romans 15:4 (“whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction”) | CRITICAL — see full analysis in 07/08. This is the doctrine-anchor verse for “Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture,” this curriculum’s first named doctrine. |
| 2 Timothy 3:17 | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture | ”the man of God” | Typological title, echoing: Deuteronomy 33:1 (Moses, “the man of God”), 1 Samuel 9:6 (Samuel), 1 Kings 17:18, 24 (Elijah), 2 Kings 4:7, 9, 16, 21ff. (Elisha) | Medium — see 08 glossary entry; this OT prophetic-office title is applied by Paul to any Scripture-formed believer, a democratizing move that must be taught explicitly as continuity-with-expansion, not narrowed back down to a single specialist office. |
Chapter 4 (Core Passage continues; full chapter covered)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 4:1 | The Charge to Preach the Word; Assurance of Reward | Christ Jesus (Judge) | Echoes Psalm 96:13 (“he comes to judge the earth… the peoples in his faithfulness”); Daniel 7:13-14 (the Son of Man given dominion and judgment); functional parallel: Acts 10:42, Romans 2:6-11, Romans 14:10-12 (God’s/Christ’s judgment of all) | Critical — reuse fixed TM মপু ইবুংগো (Lord/kyrios) framing; judgment must be taught as the personal act of the risen Christ, not an impersonal karmic mechanism. See 07/08 analysis. |
| 2 Timothy 4:1b | Assurance of Reward | Christ’s kingdom | ἐπιφάνεια (his appearing) here is the future, second appearing, paired with 1:10’s first appearing; βασιλεία reuses fixed TM কিংdom_of_god | Critical (inherited) — see ἐπιφάνεια analysis above and in 07/08. |
| 2 Timothy 4:2 | The Charge to Preach the Word | — | κήρυξον (preach!) echoes the OT prophetic commissioning pattern: Isaiah 6:8-9, Jeremiah 1:7-9, Ezekiel 2:3-7, Jonah 3:2 (God commands his prophet to proclaim); functional NT parallel: Romans 10:14-17 (“how are they to hear without someone preaching… faith comes from hearing”) | High — this is the doctrine-naming verse; see full 07 analysis. The Romans 10:14-17 parallel should be taught alongside this verse as the theological rationale for why proclamation itself (not merely private conviction) matters. |
| 2 Timothy 4:3-4 | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days | — | Echoes Isaiah 30:9-11 (“a rebellious people… who say to the seers, ‘See not’… ‘speak to us smooth things’”) — a striking OT parallel to “itching ears” wanting teachers who suit their own passions; also Jeremiah 5:31, Micah 2:11 (false prophets telling people what they want to hear) | High — a valuable teaching bridge: Isaiah 30 and Jeremiah 5/Micah 2 show this is not a new problem but a recurring OT pattern of a people preferring flattering teaching to the truth; μῦθος (myths) sensitivity per 07/08 analysis remains in force. |
| 2 Timothy 4:5 | The Charge to Preach the Word | ”an evangelist” (unnamed office) | Functional parallel: Ephesians 4:11-12 (evangelists as a gift to the church); reuses fixed TM নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel) root | High — see 08 glossary entry on διακονία/ministry (থৌদাং) and the সেবা-avoidance rule inherited from the baseline’s obedience_of_faith entry. |
| 2 Timothy 4:6-8 | Assurance of Reward; Perseverance under Suffering | Paul | σπένδομαι (poured out as a libation) echoes OT drink-offering imagery: Numbers 15:5, 10, Numbers 28:7; functional NT parallel: Philippians 2:17 (Paul’s own life “poured out as a drink offering”); “fought the good fight… finished the race” parallels 1 Corinthians 9:24-27; “crown of righteousness” parallels James 1:12, Revelation 2:10, Revelation 3:11 | High — see 08 glossary entry on στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνης (crown of righteousness) and its Pakhangba-regalia collision risk. The drink-offering image should be taught as metaphorical self-giving, not literal ritual sacrifice, per 07 analysis. |
| 2 Timothy 4:8b | Assurance of Reward | ”all who have loved his appearing” | Same ἐπιφάνεια term as 1:10 and 4:1 — corporate, not restricted to Paul alone | Critical (inherited). |
| 2 Timothy 4:9-13 | (personal travel instructions) | Demas, Crescens, Titus, Luke, Mark, Alexander (the coppersmith), Carpus | No OT/NT quotation or allusion present. Reviewed — no new cross-reference. | Low — proper names, transliterate per standard convention. |
| 2 Timothy 4:14 | Assurance of Reward | Alexander the coppersmith | Direct quotation/echo: Psalm 62:12 (“you repay a man according to his work”) and Proverbs 24:12 (LXX phrasing “render to each according to his deeds”); functional parallel: Romans 2:6 (“he will render to each one according to his works”) | HIGH — direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 2:6, already documented in the baseline’s universal_human_accountability doctrine. The Manipuri rendering of “the Lord will repay him according to his deeds” should, where possible, match whatever rendering the Romans curriculum used for Romans 2:6’s “render to each according to his works,” to preserve the shared judgment-by-deeds motif across both curricula. Must be taught as personal divine justice, never impersonal karmic cause-and-effect (see 07/08 analysis). |
| 2 Timothy 4:16-18 | Perseverance under Suffering; Assurance of Reward | Paul, “the Lord" | "Rescued from the lion’s mouth” is a direct allusion to Psalm 22:21 (“Save me from the mouth of the lion!”) and/or Daniel 6:20-22 (Daniel rescued from the lions’ den); “bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom” echoes Psalm 121:7 (“The LORD will keep you from all evil”) and the Lord’s Prayer petition of Matthew 6:13 (“deliver us from evil”) | Critical (inherited kingdom_of_god/salvation terms) — this rescue language should use a consistent deliverance-verb family with 3:11’s “the Lord rescued me from them all,” per the note above. |
| 2 Timothy 4:19-22 | (closing greetings) | Prisca, Aquila, Onesiphorus household, Erastus, Trophimus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, “all the brothers” | No OT/NT quotation or allusion present; final “Grace be with you” (4:22) reuses fixed TM grace term exactly. Reviewed — no new cross-reference beyond the fixed grace term. | Low, except grace term itself — Critical (inherited, exact reuse required). |
Messianic References Summary
| Reference | Messianic Content | OT Root | Manipuri Rendering Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 1:10 | Christ’s first appearing (incarnation) as the one who abolished death | Isaiah 25:8; Davidic/messianic hope generally | Reuse মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (incarnation) and treat উৎথোকপা (appearing) as this event’s technical term; distinguish from avatar-epiphany festival calendar |
| 2 Timothy 2:8 | Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 89 | Exact-match reuse of Romans 1:3-4 renderings (জিসু, ক্রিস্তো, সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা, দাউদগী চা-চাহি) |
| 2 Timothy 4:1, 4:8 | Christ Jesus as coming Judge and King, his future appearing and kingdom | Daniel 7:13-14; Psalm 96:13 | Reuse fixed TM মপু ইবুংগো, তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক; উৎথোকপা for this second, future appearing |
Typological Patterns Summary
| Type (OT figure/pattern) | Antitype/Application in 2 Timothy | Passage | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moses commissioning Joshua (Numbers 27:18-23; Deuteronomy 31:7-8) | Paul commissioning Timothy | 2 Timothy 1:6, 2:2 | Prophetic/apostolic succession pattern — must be distinguished from guru-paramparā’s living-succession model (see 07/08). |
| Moses as “man of God” (Deuteronomy 33:1); Elijah, Elisha, Samuel likewise titled | ”the man of God” complete and equipped by Scripture | 2 Timothy 3:17 | Democratized from a single prophetic office to any Scripture-formed believer. |
| Jannes and Jambres opposing Moses (Exodus 7:11-22; extra-biblical naming) | False teachers opposing sound doctrine, “their folly will be plain to all” | 2 Timothy 3:8-9 | Opposition-to-God’s-messenger pattern, ultimately exposed — a positive teaching bridge, since both live Meitei traditions carry their own discernment discourse (see 07 analysis). |
| Potter and clay / vessels (Jeremiah 18:1-6; Isaiah 29:16, 45:9) | Vessels for honor and dishonor in a great house | 2 Timothy 2:20-21 | Same image family as Romans 9:19-23 but applied to personal sanctification rather than sovereign election — teach the distinction explicitly. |
| The Servant of the LORD (Isaiah 42:1) | “The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome” | 2 Timothy 2:24 | Servant-posture applied to pastoral ministry conduct. |
| Drink/libation offering (Numbers 15:5, 10; 28:7) | Paul’s life “already being poured out” | 2 Timothy 4:6 | Metaphorical self-giving, not literal ritual sacrifice — caution against conflation with either tradition’s offering practice. |
| Daniel rescued from the lions (Daniel 6:20-22); the psalmist rescued from the lion’s mouth (Psalm 22:21) | Paul rescued “from the lion’s mouth” | 2 Timothy 4:17 | Deliverance-under-persecution pattern, continuous with 3:11. |
Parallels to Romans (Companion Curriculum) — Rendering-Consistency Rules
The following table lists every point where 2 Timothy directly echoes Romans content already fixed in the baseline Language Package. These renderings are non-negotiable exact matches, per the baseline’s stated theological-consistency rule (“same Manipuri term for the same Greek/English theological term across all documents”).
| 2 Timothy Passage | Romans Parallel | Shared Concept | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 1:9 | Romans 9:11; Romans 11:5-6 | Grace apart from works | Reuse মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং exactly; preserve the “not because of works” contrastive force identically. |
| 2 Timothy 2:8 | Romans 1:3-4 | Christ risen, descended from David | Exact-match reuse of জিসু, ক্রিস্তো, সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা, দাউদগী চা-চাহি. Teach explicitly as the same gospel summary in both letters. |
| 2 Timothy 2:10-13 | Romans 6:5-8; Romans 8:33 | Union with Christ in death/life; election (“the elect”) | Match Romans 6’s “died with him / live with him” rendering pattern; reuse তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা for “the elect.” |
| 2 Timothy 2:20-21 | Romans 9:19-23 | Potter/vessels imagery | Reuse থোংগোল for “vessel”; add translator note distinguishing election-application (Romans) from sanctification-application (2 Timothy). |
| 2 Timothy 2:22 | Romans 6:12-13 | Flee sin, pursue righteousness/faith/peace | Reuse অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক, থাজবা, ইনগবা exactly. |
| 2 Timothy 3:1-5 | Romans 1:29-31 | Vice catalogue | Reuse shared vice-term vocabulary wherever the Romans package already fixed individual terms; otherwise this curriculum’s renderings become the new shared standard. |
| 2 Timothy 3:16 | Romans 15:4 | Scripture’s God-given instructive purpose | Compatible but not identical wording (different Greek termini); teach as thematically unified doctrine of Scripture’s abiding usefulness. |
| 2 Timothy 4:1 | Romans 2:6-11; Romans 14:10-12 | Universal judgment before Christ/God | Reuse মপু ইবুংগো; teach as the same final-judgment doctrine taught in Romans 2 and 14. |
| 2 Timothy 4:14 | Romans 2:6 | Judgment/repayment according to deeds | Match Romans 2:6’s “render to each according to his works” rendering as closely as possible; reinforce personal (not karmic) judgment framing in both. |
| 2 Timothy 1:2, 1:16, 1:18 | Romans 9:15-18 (quoting Exodus 33:19); Romans 9:23; Romans 11:30-32; Romans 12:1; Romans 15:9 | Mercy (ἔλεος) | Gap identified: Romans baseline TM lacks a fixed “mercy” entry. Recommend adopting নুংশিবগী তেংবাং as the shared standard and back-porting it into the Romans translation memory at next revision. |
| 2 Timothy 4:22 | Romans 16:20, 16:24 (grace benediction pattern) | Closing grace benediction | Reuse মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং exactly. |
Coverage Confirmation
All four chapters of 2 Timothy have been reviewed verse-range by verse-range above. Sections containing only proper-name greetings or travel logistics (4:9-13, 4:19-21) are explicitly confirmed as reviewed, carrying no new OT/NT cross-reference beyond standard transliteration and the fixed grace formula at 4:22.
