Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy 1–6 (English → Manipuri)
Methodology and Scope
This analysis covers the entire book of 1 Timothy, first chapter to last, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-section covering its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 1 Timothy, and destination-language (Manipuri) rendering risk.
Per the hard rule governing this Language Package, any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json MUST reuse the recorded Manipuri rendering exactly. Such terms are marked [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM] below and are not re-derived. New terms specific to 1 Timothy’s doctrinal content are marked [NEW] and receive a full risk analysis, following the same descriptive-compound methodology and dual-tradition (Sanamahism/Gaudiya Vaishnavism) awareness established in the Romans baseline.
1 Timothy’s central pastoral concerns — sound doctrine vs. false teaching, church office qualifications, Christ’s unique mediatorship, orderly public worship, the church as truth’s pillar, godliness with contentment, care for widows, and guarding the entrusted deposit of faith — generate a distinct and demanding new-term set beyond what Romans required, even though both epistles share Paul’s core soteriological vocabulary (faith, grace, salvation, law, sin, etc.), which is REUSED unchanged.
CORE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 — Verse-by-Verse Analysis
3:1
“Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.” “This saying is trustworthy: if anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a good work.”
- πιστὸς ὁ λόγος (pistos ho logos) — lit. “faithful/trustworthy [is] the word/saying.” Semantic range: reliable, worthy of belief. English variants: “trustworthy saying,” “faithful saying.” Theological meaning: a formulaic marker Paul uses (also 1:15; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11; Titus 3:8) to flag an authoritative, memorable statement of doctrine. Uses the πίστις (pistis) root already governed by baseline faith [REUSED: থাজবা, thajaba]. Manipuri rendering risk: Low — render as “অচুম্বা ৱাহেই” (achumba wahei, “a true/reliable saying”) or similarly using existing “অচুম্বা” (true, cf. righteousness root) rather than থাজবা alone, since this is an assertion of reliability, not an act of personal trust; flag for native speaker confirmation of the most natural fixed-formula rendering, since this phrase repeats across the Pastoral Epistles and should be rendered identically each time.
- ἐπισκοπή / ἐπίσκοπος (episkopē / episkopos) — lit. “overseeing/oversight” / “one who oversees, watches over.” Semantic range: superintendent, guardian, overseer; in secular Greek, a civic or estate overseer; in the NT, the office later called “bishop/elder/pastor” (used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος, presbyteros, in Titus 1:5-7 and Acts 20:17,28). English variants: overseer, bishop, superintendent. Contextual theological meaning: the office of spiritual oversight and care for a local congregation — teaching, governing, protecting sound doctrine. [NEW] Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Manipuri rendering risk: High. Proposed: কলিসিয়াগী য়েংশিনবা (kalisiyagi yengsinba, “overseer of the church/assembly,” built on the established কলিসিয়া, “church”). Rejected: any rendering built on মৈবা/purohit-style religious-specialist vocabulary, and any rendering suggesting a Vaishnava temple পুজারী (priest) office, since both are recognized, currently-practiced religious-specialist roles in the Meitei landscape whose duties (ritual mediation, oracular functions, temple maintenance) differ categorically from a church overseer’s teaching-and-shepherding office. Must be taught as a congregationally recognized teaching-and-shepherding office, not a ritual-specialist or hereditary priestly role.
- ὀρέγεται (oregetai) — “reaches out for, aspires to, desires” (a legitimate, positive aspiration, distinct from ἐπιθυμία used negatively elsewhere). Semantic range: stretching out after something good. Manipuri rendering risk: Low — পम्मো তৌবা/য়ানবা (pamba, “to desire/wish for”).
- καλοῦ ἔργου (kalou ergou) — “a good work/task.” Low risk; standard vocabulary.
3:2
“δεῖ οὖν τὸν ἐπίσκοπον ἀνεπίλημπτον εἶναι, μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, νηφάλιον, σώφρονα, κόσμιον, φιλόξενον, διδακτικόν”
- δεῖ (dei) — “it is necessary/must.” Marks these qualifications as binding requirements, not aspirational ideals. Risk: Low, but the force of δεῖ must be preserved in Manipuri (তবক তাবনি / -গদবনি obligatory verb forms), not softened into mere preference.
- ἀνεπίλημπτον (anepilēmpton) — lit. “not able to be laid hold of,” i.e., “above reproach, blameless, irreproachable.” Semantic range: nothing to seize on for accusation. English variants: above reproach, blameless, irreproachable. [NEW] Manipuri rendering risk: Medium. Proposed: ৱারিবা লৈতবা (wariba leitaba, “having nothing [accusation] to be found against”). Distinct from Meitei social “face/honor” (ikai-khumnaba) categories — this is about verifiable moral conduct, not merely public reputation management.
- μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα (mias gynaikos andra) — lit. “a one-woman man” / “husband of one wife.” Semantic range: debated between (a) monogamous (as opposed to polygamous) and (b) faithful to one wife (as opposed to serially divorced/remarried) and (c) married only once (as opposed to remarriage after widowhood). English variants: “husband of one wife,” “faithful to his wife,” “a one-woman man.” [NEW] Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Manipuri rendering risk: High. Proposed: নুপী অমখাক্তগী মপুরোইবা (nupi amakhaktagi mapuroiba, “husband of only one wife”). This qualification directly confronts historic Meitei polygamy, practiced within the historic Meitei royal/noble tradition and still recognized under some customary/personal-law frameworks in Manipur. This is a live cultural-legal collision point, not a merely historical one, and must be taught explicitly as a New Testament church-office standard (not a comment on the salvation status or legitimacy of existing polygamous marriages generally). Requires theologian framing before use in any pastoral teaching material.
- νηφάλιον (nēphalion) — “sober, temperate, clear-headed” (literally “not intoxicated,” extended to mental clarity/self-command). [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: থমোই ফজবা (thamoi phajaba, “clear-minded”).
- σώφρονα (sōphrona) — “self-controlled, sensible, of sound mind.” [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: মশা খুদম চান্বা (masha khudam chanba, “self-restrained”). Distinguish from bhakti-ascetic self-denial (vairagya) practiced as a devotional technique for spiritual merit; this is practical moral self-governance flowing from the Spirit, not merit-earning renunciation.
- κόσμιον (kosmion) — “orderly, respectable, well-arranged” (same root as κόσμος, “order/world”). [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: মথৌ চান্না লৈবা (mathou channa leiba, “living in proper order”).
- φιλόξενον (philoxenon) — lit. “lover of strangers,” i.e., “hospitable.” [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: লমহেনবা ওকপা (lamhenba okpa, “welcoming a stranger/traveler”).
- διδακτικόν (didaktikon) — “skilled/apt in teaching.” [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: তম্বিবা য়াবা (tambiba yaba, “capable of teaching”). Related to sound-doctrine vocabulary below (§Ch. 1).
3:3
“μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, ἀλλὰ ἐπιεικῆ, ἄμαχον, ἀφιλάργυρον”
- πάροινον (paroinon) — lit. “beside/given to wine,” i.e., “addicted to wine, a drunkard.” Risk: Medium — must be rendered as behavioral excess, not a blanket prohibition statement detached from context (relevant given both traditional Meitei rice-beer (atingba) social use and its contested status in contemporary Manipur temperance/prohibition debates); teach as a leadership-qualification standard, not a general ethical pronouncement on alcohol as such.
- πλήκτην (plēktēn) — “a striker, a violent/pugnacious person.” Risk: Low.
- ἐπιεικῆ (epieikē) — “gentle, gracious, reasonable, yielding.” Risk: Low. Proposed: থমोইনা মিং লৈবা / পুক ৱাংবা (puk wangba, “gentle/large-hearted”).
- ἄμαχον (amachon) — “not quarrelsome, peaceable.” Risk: Low. Related to established peace [REUSED: ইনগবা, ingba] but as a personal-conduct adjective, not the theological “peace with God”; keep distinct.
- ἀφιλάργυρον (aphilargyron) — “not a lover of money.” [NEW], links directly to the ch. 6 love-of-money doctrine below. Risk: High. Proposed: শেলবু নুংশীদবা (sel-bu nungshidaba, “not loving money”).
3:4
“τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ, μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος”
- τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον (tou idiou oikou kalōs proistamenon) — “managing his own household well.” προΐσταμαι (proistamai): “to stand before/preside over, manage, care for.” [NEW] Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership; also anticipates the Household of God doctrine (3:15). Risk: Medium. Proposed: মশাগী ইমুং ফজরবা মায়োক্না মায়োকপা (masha-gi yum phajaraba mayokna mayokpa, “managing his own household well”). Note for theologians: this criterion assumes the qualified man’s household-management is observable evidence of fitness to shepherd God’s household — it must be taught as a diagnostic, not as importing an unrelated claim about clan (yumnak) patriarchal authority structures generally.
- τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ (tekna en hypotagē) — “children in submission/subjection.” ὑποταγή (hypotagē): orderly, willing submission to authority. Risk: Medium — same root reappears at 2:11 in the more contested public-worship passage; keep the Manipuri rendering of ὑποταγή consistent across both occurrences so cross-referencing remains possible, while flagging 2:11 separately for theologian review given its higher doctrinal sensitivity.
- σεμνότητος (semnotētos, gen. of σεμνότης, semnotēs) — “dignity, seriousness, reverence.” [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: ইকাই-খুম্নবগী মথৌ (ikai-khumnabagi mathou, “dignified/honorable bearing”).
3:5
“εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς ἐκκλησίας θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται;”
- ἐκκλησίας θεοῦ (ekklēsias theou) — “church of God.” Both terms REUSED from baseline: church [REUSED: কলিসিয়া, kalisiya] and god [REUSED: তেংবাং মপু, Tengban Mapu]. Combined phrase: তেংবাং মপুগী কলিসিয়া (Tengban Mapugi kalisiya). Risk: Medium — the household-to-church analogy (a well-run home qualifies one to shepherd God’s household) must be preserved as an explicit analogy, not flattened; this directly sets up the Household of God doctrine developed fully in 3:15.
- ἐπιμελήσεται (epimelēsetai) — “will care for, take charge of, attend to.” Risk: Low.
3:6
“μὴ νεόφυτον, ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς εἰς κρίμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου”
- νεόφυτον (neophyton) — lit. “newly planted,” i.e., “a new convert, recent believer, novice.” [NEW] Risk: Low-Medium. Proposed: থাজবদা অनৌবা লিচেল (thajabada anouba lichel, “new in the faith”).
- τυφωθεὶς (typhōtheis) — “having been puffed up, become conceited/clouded with pride” (literally, “enveloped in smoke”). Risk: Low.
- κρίμα τοῦ διαβόλου (krima tou diabolou) — “the judgment/condemnation of the devil.” διάβολος (diabolos): “slanderer, accuser,” the standard NT term for Satan. [NEW] Doctrine: relates to spiritual-warfare vocabulary Paul reuses at 3:7 (snare) and 3:11 (wordplay, see below). Risk: High — must be rendered with a term for the personal, malicious accuser/adversary figure of Scripture, not merged with any Meitei traditional category of malevolent nature-spirit or ancestral spirit (e.g., certain classes of lai/spirit within Sanamahi cosmology); propose লান্নাইবা লাইরাংশা (lannaiba lairangsha, “the accusing/slandering evil spirit”) or simply preserve সয়তান/দিয়াবোল as an established transliteration if attested in the Manipuri Bible — confirm against a current printed edition before finalizing, per baseline transliteration-standard practice.
3:7
“δεῖ δὲ καὶ μαρτυρίαν καλὴν ἔχειν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐμπέσῃ καὶ παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου”
- μαρτυρίαν καλὴν … ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν (martyrian kalēn … apo tōn exōthen) — “a good testimony/reputation from outsiders [non-believers].” [NEW] Doctrine: connects to Mission to the Nations/Universal Scope framework in the Romans baseline. Risk: Medium. Proposed: মপান্দগী ফজরবা শাক্ষী (mapandagi phajaraba sakshi, “a good testimony from those outside”). Given Manipur’s contemporary inter-community sensitivities, this criterion should be framed as the church’s own integrity and consistency of life observable by Sanamahi- and Vaishnava-practicing neighbors, not as scorekeeping against other religious communities.
- ὀνειδισμὸν (oneidismon) — “reproach, disgrace, public shame.” Relates to honor/shame dynamics; flag for native speaker review per the general instruction-set rule on honor/shame passages.
- παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου (pagida tou diabolou) — “a snare/trap of the devil.” Same διάβολος term as 3:6; render consistently.
3:8
“Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς, μὴ διλόγους, μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας, μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς”
- Διάκονος (diakonos) — lit. “servant, attendant, one who waits/serves (esp. at table)”; in the NT, both a general term for Christian service and, from this passage on, a recognized church office alongside overseer. English variants: deacon, servant, minister. [NEW] Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Risk: High. Proposed: কলিসিয়াগী মতেংপা (kalisiyagi matengpa, “helper/servant of the church”), built on established কলিসিয়া plus মতেংপা (“helper,” an ordinary Meitei word for one who assists). Explicitly rejected: any rendering built on সেবক/সেবা vocabulary. সেবা names devotional service rendered to Krishna to build bhakti-merit within Manipuri Vaishnavism — a live, well-developed devotional-service framework (cf. the baseline’s rejection of সেবা for obedience_of_faith). A deacon’s service is a recognized, examined church office exercised out of gratitude for grace already received, not merit-accumulating devotional labor. This distinction should be taught explicitly wherever “deacon” first appears in this curriculum.
- σεμνούς (semnous) — same root as 3:4 (σεμνότης); render consistently as ইকাই-খুম্নবা/মথৌ চাংবা.
- διλόγους (dilogous) — “double-tongued, saying different things to different people.” [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: লোল অনি হাইবা (lol ani haiba, “speaking with two tongues/words”).
- οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας (oinō pollō prosechontas) — “devoted/given to much wine.” Same cultural-sensitivity note as 3:3.
- αἰσχροκερδεῖς (aischrokerdeis) — lit. “shameful-gain-lovers,” i.e., “greedy for dishonest/disgraceful profit.” [NEW] Risk: Medium-High. Links to ch. 6 love-of-money doctrine. Proposed: ইকায়শিদবা শেল ফংবা পাম্বা (ikaishidaba sel phangba pamba, “desiring shameful/dishonorable gain”).
3:9
“ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει”
- μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως (mystērion tēs pisteōs) — “the mystery of the faith.” μυστήριον (mystērion): a truth once hidden, now disclosed by divine revelation — NOT esoteric secret knowledge reserved for initiates. [NEW] Doctrine: Sound Doctrine / Guarding the Deposit of Faith. Risk: High. Proposed: থাজবগী অথুম্বা ৱারোল (thajabagi athumba warol, “the once-hidden [now revealed] truth of the faith”), built on থাজবা [REUSED]. Must be sharply distinguished from any esoteric-initiation framework — a maibi’s ritual secrets received through Lai Haraoba trance initiation, or a Vaishnava guru-parampara’s privileged initiatory (dīkṣā) teaching passed to select disciples. The gospel’s “mystery” is revealed truth openly proclaimed to all (cf. Romans-baseline gospel entry), the functional opposite of privileged esoteric knowledge.
- καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει (kathara syneidēsei) — “a clean/clear conscience.” συνείδησις (syneidēsis): lit. “co-knowledge, knowing-with-oneself” — the faculty of moral self-awareness. [NEW] Doctrine: recurs at 1:5,19; 4:2; and elsewhere in the Pastorals. Risk: Medium-High. Proposed: থমোইগী খংবা (thamoigi khangba, “the heart’s/mind’s knowing”), i.e., conscience. Must be distinguished from ritual-purity awareness (states of ritual cleanness/defilement observed before entering an Umang Lai sacred grove or a Vaishnava temple) — biblical “clean conscience” is a moral-relational state before God enabled by Christ’s finished work (cf. baseline righteousness/justification), not a ritual-preparation state achieved through purification rites.
3:10
“καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες”
- δοκιμαζέσθωσαν (dokimazesthōsan) — “let them be tested/examined/proved” (δοκιμάζω, dokimazō: to test as one tests metal for genuineness). [NEW] Risk: Low-Medium. Proposed: মচেৎ চান্না চেক্শিনগদবা (machet channa cheksingadaba, “to be carefully examined/tested”). Doctrine: connects to church-discipline/office-examination procedure developed further at 5:19-22.
- ἀνέγκλητοι (anegklētoi) — “blameless, without accusation” (same conceptual family as ἀνεπίλημπτον, 3:2). Risk: Low.
3:11
“Γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς, μὴ διαβόλους, νηφαλίους, πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν”
- Γυναῖκας (Gynaikas) — “women/wives.” Textually and interpretively disputed: either “[deacons’] wives” or “women [deacons/servants].” [NEW] Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Risk: High — this is a genuinely ambiguous term requiring explicit translator handling per the ambiguity-handling protocol; the Manipuri rendering must preserve, rather than resolve, the ambiguity unless a theologian directs otherwise, since the interpretive question (whether this describes a female-deacon office or deacons’ wives) is a live scholarly debate that this curriculum should present rather than silently settle. Flag for human theologian review.
- σεμνάς (semnas) — feminine form, same root as 3:4/3:8; render consistently.
- μὴ διαβόλους (mē diabolous) — “not slanderers.” Notable: this is the adjectival use of the same word rendered “the devil” (διάβολος) in 3:6-7 — Paul’s Greek deliberately puns the noun “the Slanderer” (Satan’s title) against the adjective “slanderous” describing gossiping speech. [NEW] Risk: Medium — this wordplay cannot be reproduced literally in Manipuri without loss; a translator’s note should record that English/Greek preserves a play on words here that the Manipuri rendering (using two distinct terms — the accuser-title from 3:6 vs. an ordinary word for “gossip/slander,” e.g., ৱার খায়বা, war khaiba) will necessarily lose. Preserve the sense (do not repeat malicious talk) rather than force a false lexical parallel.
- νηφαλίους (nēphalious) — same as 3:2, render consistently.
- πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν (pistas en pasin) — “faithful/trustworthy in all things.” Uses the πίστις root [REUSED faith family: থাজবা] but here as a personal-character adjective (“trustworthy”), not saving trust; render as থাজরবা (thajaraba, “trustworthy/reliable”) to keep this distinguishable in context from থাজবা as “faith” per se.
3:12
“διάκονοι ἔστωσαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες, τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων”
- Repeats μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα/ἄνδρες (3:2) and καλῶς προϊστάμενον (3:4) for deacons specifically — render identically to 3:2 and 3:4 for consistency. No new terms; confirms that overseer and deacon share the marriage/household-management standard.
3:13
“οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ”
- βαθμὸν … καλὸν (bathmon … kalon) — lit. “a good step/standing” — a good standing or reputation earned through faithful service. [NEW] Risk: Low.
- παρρησίαν (parrēsian) — “boldness, confidence, freedom/openness of speech.” Semantic range: originally civic free-speech in the Greek assembly; in the NT, confident, unashamed access/speech before God and others. [NEW] Doctrine: connects to Assurance of Salvation (Romans baseline) and to the “good confession” doctrine of 6:12-13. Risk: Medium-High. Proposed: থাজবগী পুক্নিং চাংবা (thajabagi puk-ning changba, “boldness/confident-heartedness in faith”). Must not be confused with a devotee’s ecstatic confidence gained through bhakti-emotional experience or trance-state assurance (as in maibi possession-states); this confidence is grounded in Christ’s finished work and one’s faithful service, held with sober self-awareness, not an ecstatic religious experience.
- ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (en pistei tē en Christō Iēsou) — “in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.” All terms REUSED: faith [থাজবা], christ/messiah [ক্রিস্তো], jesus [জিসু]. Render as: ক্রিস্তো জিসুদা লৈবা থাজবা (Christo Jisuda leiba thajaba).
Chapter 1 — Sound Doctrine, False Teaching, Paul’s Testimony of Grace
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apostle | ἀπόστολος | apostolos | one sent | commissioned, authorized envoy | apostle | Paul’s authority basis for the letter’s commands (1:1) | REUSED: তবিদগী থাবিরকপা — Medium |
| God our Savior | θεοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν | theou sōtēros hēmōn | God, our savior | title combining God + rescuer | God our Savior | 1:1; God as ultimate source of salvation, distinct from Christ’s mediatorial role (2:5) developed later | তেংবাং মপু [REUSED] + অহানবিরিবা (ahanbiriba, “the one who saves”) [NEW, Medium — must be taught alongside “Christ our hope” (1:1) so the Trinitarian shape of salvation is not lost] |
| grace, mercy, peace | χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη | charis, eleos, eirēnē | favor, compassion, peace | greeting-triad (expands Romans’ grace+peace to include mercy) | grace, mercy, and peace | 1:2 salutation | grace REUSED: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (Critical); peace REUSED: ইনগবা (Medium); mercy [NEW] — proposed: ৱাখল হেনগৎপা / থৌগল পীবা (thougal piba, “showing compassion/pity”) — Risk Medium, must be distinguished from কৃপা’s bhakti-responsive nuance exactly as grace is (baseline note) |
| sound/healthy doctrine | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία | hygiainousa didaskalia | healthy teaching | teaching that produces spiritual health, vs. diseased/corrupting teaching | sound doctrine, sound teaching, wholesome teaching | 1:10; central organizing category of the whole letter | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: ফজরবা তম্বিরোল (phajaraba tambirol, “wholesome/good teaching”). Must be established early and used with total consistency across the curriculum, since it recurs at 4:6; 6:3. |
| different/false doctrine | ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω | heterodidaskaleō | to teach differently/other | teaching content diverging from apostolic doctrine | teach false doctrine, teach a different doctrine | 1:3; the letter’s opening command | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: অতোপ্পা তম্বিরোল তম্বিবা (atoppa tambirol tambiba, “teaching a different/other teaching”). |
| myths | μύθοι | mythoi | fables, invented stories | fictitious, speculative narratives contrasted with revealed truth | myths, fables | 1:4; also 4:7 (“irreverent, silly myths”) | [NEW] Risk: Critical. Proposed: থোইদোকপা ৱারী (thoidokpa wari, “empty/futile tale”). CRITICAL NOTE: this polemic targets specific speculative false teaching in the first-century church (linked to “endless genealogies,” 1:4) — it is NOT a blanket verdict on the value of traditional Meitei oral narrative forms, including the puya sacred-narrative tradition (whose destruction in the 1729 Puya Meithaba is a live point of cultural grief) or the Vaishnava Puranic Krishna-lila narrative tradition celebrated through Ras Lila. This term requires careful contextual framing by a human theologian in every teaching use to avoid being heard as a general dismissal of either tradition’s narrative heritage. |
| endless genealogies | γενεαλογίαι ἀπέραντοι | genealogiai aperantoi | unending genealogies | speculative ancestral-lineage disputation (likely tied to false teachers’ genealogical speculation, not genealogy as such) | endless genealogies | 1:4 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: চা-চাহিগী লোইনগদবা ৱারী (cha-chahigi loinngadaba wari, “unending genealogy-talk”), building on established চা-চাহি (seed/lineage, cf. baseline seed_of_david). Note: Meitei culture places real weight on clan (yumnak) and royal (Pakhangba) lineage; teach that Paul opposes speculative misuse of genealogical material for controversy, not lineage/ancestry as a category. |
| the law | νόμος | nomos | law, rule | the Mosaic Law, used lawfully vs. unlawfully (1:8-9) | the law | 1:8-9 | REUSED: য়াথাং, yathang — High |
| sin(s), sinners | ἁμαρτωλός / ἁμαρτία | hamartōlos / hamartia | one who misses the mark / missing the mark | moral transgression before God | sinners, sin | 1:9,15 (“Christ Jesus came… to save sinners, of whom I am foremost”) | REUSED: পাপ, pap — High |
| glory | δόξα | doxa | radiance, honor | God’s honor/splendor | glory | 1:11,17 | REUSED: মতিক চাউবা — High |
| gospel | εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | good news | the proclamation of salvation | glorious gospel | 1:11 | REUSED: নুংঙাইবগী পাউ — High |
| the blessed God | ὁ μακάριος θεός | ho makarios theos | the happy/blessed God | God’s self-sufficient blessedness | the blessed God | 1:11; also 6:15 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: হরাউবা তেংবাং মপু (harauba Tengban Mapu, “the joyful/blessed God”) — built on established তেংবাং মপু. |
| unfeigned/sincere faith | πίστις ἀνυπόκριτος (cf. 1:5) | pistis anypokritos | faith without hypocrisy | genuine, non-performed trust | sincere faith | 1:5 | Uses REUSED থাজবা + [NEW] descriptor অলোকখৎপা (alokkhatpa, “without pretense/hypocrisy”) — Risk Medium |
| good conscience | συνείδησις ἀγαθή | syneidēsis agathē | good co-knowledge | clear moral self-awareness | good/clear conscience | 1:5,19 | See conscience entry under core passage (3:9); render consistently — Risk Medium-High |
| shipwrecked (concerning the faith) | ναυαγέω | nauageō | to suffer shipwreck | to lose/abandon the faith catastrophically | made shipwreck of their faith | 1:19 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: থাজবগী হি ঙাকখিবা (thajabagi hi ngakkhiba, “their faith’s boat sank/wrecked”) — a vivid metaphor; confirm natural Manipuri nautical/river-boat idiom exists (Manipur’s riverine geography, e.g. the Manipur River system, may support a natural equivalent) or render plainly if not. |
| handed over to Satan | παρέδωκα τῷ Σατανᾷ | paredōka tō Satana | I delivered/handed over to Satan | an act of church discipline (excommunication with corrective intent) | delivered to Satan | 1:20 | [NEW] Risk: High. Σατανᾷ (Satana) — proper name; transliterate সয়তান following established Manipuri Bible convention (confirm against current printed edition). Must be distinguished from any Meitei traditional binding/exorcism ritual performed by a maiba; this is a disciplinary act of the church’s spiritual authority (see also 5:20’s public rebuke), not an occult curse or ritual banishment. |
Chapter 2 — Prayer, the One Mediator, and Public Worship
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| supplications | δεήσεις | deēseis | pleas, petitions | specific requests/petitions to God | supplications, petitions | 2:1 | [NEW] Risk: Low-Medium. Proposed: হায়জবা (haijaba, “pleading/petitioning”) — same root as REUSED intercession term; keep distinct from general “prayer” below by context. |
| prayers | προσευχαί | proseuchai | prayers (general) | the general category of address to God | prayers | 2:1 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: প্রার্থনা (prarthana), a widely-used Bengali-script loanword already current in regional Christian usage. Note: প্রার্থনা is also used generically across regional Hindu devotional vocabulary (including Vaishnava contexts); teach explicitly that Christian প্রার্থনা is address to the one true God through Christ, the sole mediator (2:5), not a generic devotional-prayer category compatible with any deity addressed. |
| intercessions | ἐντεύξεις | enteuxeis | petitions on behalf of others | prayer made for others, incl. rulers | intercessions | 2:1 | REUSED: মখোয়গী মফমদা হায়জবা, makhoigi mafamda haijaba — Medium |
| thanksgivings | εὐχαριστίαι | eucharistiai | expressions of gratitude | grateful acknowledgment | thanksgivings | 2:1 | REUSED: থাগৎচরি, thagatchari — Low |
| kings and all who are in high positions | βασιλεῖς καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντες | basileis kai pantes hoi en hyperochē ontes | kings and all in prominence | civil authorities | kings, rulers, those in authority | 2:2 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Given Manipur’s historic royal (ningthou/Pakhangba-lineage) political theology and its contemporary governance context, teach prayer for authorities as the church’s distinctive posture of civic responsibility, not endorsement of any particular ruler’s religious claims. |
| quiet and peaceable life | ἤρεμον καὶ ἡσύχιον βίον | ēremon kai hēsychion bion | a calm and quiet life | ordinary, undisturbed social existence | peaceful and quiet lives | 2:2 | Low risk; standard vocabulary. |
| Savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | one who saves/rescues | title for God/Christ as rescuer | Savior | 2:3 | Built on REUSED salvation root [অহানবা]: অহানবিরিবা (ahanbiriba) — Risk High, see 1:1 note above; consistency required. |
| one God | εἷς θεός | heis theos | one God | strict numerical/exclusive monotheism | one God | 2:5 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. Proposed: তেংবাং মপু অমত্তা (Tengban Mapu amatta, “God alone/the one [and only] God”). CRITICAL: this is a direct, explicit monotheism claim that must be taught unambiguously against BOTH live religious systems: Gaudiya Vaishnavism’s plural divine framework (Vishnu, Krishna’s avatars, the wider Vaishnava pantheon) and Sanamahism’s plural deity structure (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, and the many Umang Lai forest deities honored at Lai Haraoba). This verse should never be softened to “God is greatest” or “our God” in a way that leaves room for a functionally polytheistic reading. |
| one mediator | εἷς μεσίτης | heis mesitēs | one middle-person, go-between | one who stands between two parties to reconcile/represent | mediator, go-between | 2:5 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. Proposed: মরক্তা লেপ্লিবা অমত্তা (marakta lepliba amatta, “the one who stands in the middle/between”). CRITICAL: Christ’s sole, sufficient mediatorship must be taught as categorically excluding all rival intermediary figures active in the Meitei religious landscape: (a) the maibi/maiba who ritually mediates between the community and the Umang Lai or ancestral spirits during Lai Haraoba; (b) the Vaishnava guru, who mediates spiritual instruction and initiation (dīkṣā) in the guru-parampara lineage system; and (c) any devotional intermediary figure (e.g., Radha as intercessor within some strands of Krishna bhakti). This doctrine (Christ as the One Mediator) is a named curriculum doctrine and requires theologian-level teaching material contrasting it explicitly and respectfully with these live alternatives, not merely asserting it in isolation. |
| ransom | ἀντίλυτρον | antilytron | a substitute-price paid for release | a price paid to free a captive/slave | ransom | 2:6 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: হন্থোকপগী মথৌ (hanthokpagi mathou, “the price of release/deliverance”). Connects to REUSED salvation family; must not be reduced to a generic “sacrifice” without the specific substitutionary-payment sense. |
| lifting holy hands | ἐπαίροντας ὁσίους χεῖρας | epairontas hosious cheiras | raising up devout/pious hands | a physical prayer posture signifying purity of approach to God | lifting holy hands | 2:8 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Note: ὅσιος (hosios, “devout/pious/dutifully reverent”) is a different Greek word from ἅγιος (hagios, REUSED as holy: অসেংবা), though both may be glossed “holy” in English. Propose a distinct rendering here — e.g., থৌজালনা লেপ্না খুৎ থাংবা (thoujalna lepna khut thangba, “raising hands in reverent devotion”) — to preserve the lexical distinction for translators, while teaching that inward moral purity (not ritual hand-washing before Vaishnava temple worship, nor a maibi’s ritual hand-gesture) is what “holy hands” requires. |
| adornment/apparel | καταστολή, κόσμιος | katastolē, kosmios | clothing/deportment, orderly | modest, decent dress and demeanor | modest apparel, respectable clothing | 2:9 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Must be taught as a heart-modesty principle, not a specific dress code; avoid implying blanket criticism of traditional Meitei ceremonial dress (phanek, innaphi) or jewelry, whose social/cultural significance is distinct from the specific ostentation Paul addresses. |
| quietness, submission | ἡσυχία, ὑποταγή | hēsychia, hypotagē | stillness/quiet; being placed under order | orderly deportment in the gathered assembly’s teaching setting | quietness, submission | 2:11-12 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL/High. This is among the most theologically and pastorally contested passages in the letter; requires mandatory human theologian review with explicit pastoral-care framing. Note the Manipuri cultural context contains its own complex, non-Western gender dynamics (e.g., the prominent public economic and social role of women in the Ima Keithel women’s market alongside historic clan-based household structures); the Manipuri rendering and accompanying teaching material must not import unexamined Western debate framings wholesale, nor flatten this into either an uncritical restriction or an uncritical dismissal. ὑποταγή should be rendered consistently with its 3:4 occurrence (see core passage) where linguistically appropriate. |
| deceived, transgression (Eve) | ἀπατηθεῖσα, παράβασις | apatētheisa, parabasis | having been deceived; a stepping-across/transgression | Genesis narrative reference | deceived, transgression | 2:14 | Low-Medium risk; requires Old Testament (Genesis 3) narrative literacy to be built up, per the general low-OT-literacy assumption in the AI instruction set. |
| saved through childbearing | σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας | sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias | she will be saved/kept-safe through childbearing | a notoriously difficult clause; likely “preserved/kept safe through the experience of childbearing” rather than soteriological salvation from sin | saved through childbearing, kept safe in childbearing | 2:15 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. MUST NOT use অহানবা (the REUSED soteriological salvation term) here without a clear distinguishing rendering and translator’s note, since doing so would create a serious doctrinal contradiction with the entire letter’s Christ-alone soteriology (1:15; 2:3-6) by implying women are saved from sin through childbirth rather than through faith in Christ. This risk is compounded in the Manipuri context by the real presence of fertility-vow practices — petitions for children made to the Umang Lai through a maibi, or devotional vows made at a Vaishnava temple for offspring — which could make a soteriologically-worded rendering sound like an endorsement of fertility-cult logic. Proposed provisional rendering distinguishing this sense: মশাবু ঙাক্তুনা থম্বিগনি (masha-bu ngaktuna thambigani, “she will be kept/preserved safe”). This verse requires mandatory human theologian review and an accompanying translator’s note in every occurrence. |
Chapter 3 (remainder, 3:14-16) — Household of God, Pillar of Truth, Mystery of Godliness
(3:1-13 fully treated above as the core passage.)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| household of God | οἶκος θεοῦ | oikos theou | house/household of God | God’s people conceived as a family/household | household of God, family of God, God’s house | 3:15 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: তেংবাং মপুগী ইমুং (Tengban Mapugi imung), built on established তেংবাং মপু + ইমুং (household/family, a category of real social weight in Meitei clan/yumnak life). Must be taught as a spiritual family transcending and relativizing (not replacing the social value of) yumnak clan-household identity — cf. the Romans baseline’s note on Christian Identity in Christ superseding clan/ethnic-community belonging. |
| pillar | στῦλος | stylos | a supporting post/column | structural support; also used metaphorically of prominent leaders (Gal 2:9) | pillar | 3:15 | [NEW] Risk: Medium-High. Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth (named curriculum doctrine). Proposed: চিংথৌ (chingthou, “a supporting pillar/post”). Note: must be clearly taught as a structural-support metaphor (the church upholds/displays the truth) — not confused with a physical ritual pole or marker erected at an Umang Lai sacred grove, which carries its own distinct religious-geographic significance in Sanamahi practice. |
| foundation / bulwark | ἑδραίωμα | hedraiōma | a firm support/foundation | that which grounds and stabilizes | foundation, bulwark, buttress | 3:15 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: চুংথ্রাক (chungtharak, “firm base/foundation”). |
| the truth | ἀλήθεια | alētheia | truth, reality | that which corresponds to reality, as opposed to myth/falsehood (cf. 1:4’s “myths”) | the truth | 3:15 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: অচুম্বা ৱারোল (achumba warol, “the true word/truth”), built on established অচুম্বা root (cf. righteousness, achumba chatnabirak). |
| the mystery of godliness | τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον | to tēs eusebeias mystērion | the mystery/hidden-truth of godliness | the revealed truth undergirding godly life — namely, the incarnation/resurrection/exaltation of Christ summarized in the following creedal hymn | the mystery of godliness | 3:16 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. See godliness entry below (Ch. 6) for the core risk discussion. The “mystery” here (as at 3:9) is revealed, not esoteric, truth — the content is the following six-line Christ-hymn (manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory), which restates several already-CRITICAL Romans-baseline doctrines (Incarnation, Deity of Christ, Resurrection) in summary/creedal form. Every rendering choice already fixed in the Romans baseline for these doctrines MUST be reused exactly here: incarnation [মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা], resurrection-adjacent language [সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা family], gentiles [অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ], glory [মতিক চাউবা]. |
| manifested in the flesh | ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί | ephanerōthē en sarki | was made visible/manifest in flesh | the incarnation stated in summary-hymn form | manifested in the flesh, appeared in a body | 3:16 | Uses established incarnation vocabulary [REUSED-pattern: মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা]; Risk CRITICAL per baseline Incarnation doctrine — never render with অবতার. |
| justified/vindicated in the Spirit | ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι | edikaiōthē en pneumati | was declared-righteous/vindicated by the Spirit | Christ’s resurrection-vindication by the Spirit’s power | vindicated by the Spirit | 3:16 | Uses justification root [REUSED: অচুম্বা ওইহনবা family] applied Christologically rather than to believers; Risk High — flag for theologian review since this is a distinct christological (not soteriological) use of the justification word-family and could otherwise be misread as implying Christ himself needed justification from sin. |
| taken up in glory | ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ | anelēmphthē en doxē | was taken up in glory | Christ’s ascension | received up into glory, taken up in glory | 3:16 | REUSED glory: মতিক চাউবা — Risk High. |
Chapter 4 — Departure from the Faith, Ascetic False Teaching, Godliness in Practice
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| depart from the faith | ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως | apostēsontai tines tēs pisteōs | some will stand-away-from the faith | apostasy | depart from the faith, fall away | 4:1 | Uses REUSED faith [থাজবা]; Risk High — apostasy warning, connects to Sound Doctrine/Guarding the Deposit doctrines. |
| deceiving spirits | πνεύματα πλάνα | pneumata plana | wandering/deceiving spirits | malevolent spiritual beings who mislead | deceiving spirits | 4:1 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. See doctrines-of-demons entry immediately below; treat together. |
| doctrines of demons | διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων | didaskaliai daimoniōn | teachings of demons | false teaching with a demonic source | teachings of demons, doctrines taught by demons | 4:1 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. Proposed: লাইরাংশিংগী তম্বিরোল (lairangshinggi tambirol, “teachings of evil spirits”). CRITICAL CAUTION: this phrase, if taught without careful contextual framing, risks being heard as a direct condemnation of the entire class of spirit-beings (lai) recognized within Sanamahi cosmology, including the Umang Lai forest deities honored at Lai Haraoba — a live, actively revived religious tradition. The passage’s actual target is a specific first-century ascetic-dualist teaching (forbidding marriage, requiring abstinence from certain foods, 4:3) attributed to a demonic source, not a general theological claim classifying all Meitei traditional spirit-beings as demonic. This doctrine requires mandatory human theologian review with careful, non-inflammatory framing before any teaching use, distinguishing the specific NT polemic from a wholesale verdict on Sanamahi belief. |
| forbidding marriage, abstaining from foods | κωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων | kōlyontōn gamein, apechesthai brōmatōn | forbidding to marry, to abstain from foods | specific ascetic-dualist practices condemned here as false doctrine | forbid marriage, require abstinence from foods | 4:3 | [NEW] Risk: High. Must be taught alongside 4:4-5 (everything created by God is good, received with thanksgiving) as a doctrine of the goodness of creation — and must NOT be read as a blanket condemnation of all dietary discipline or fasting (including genuine Christian fasting, or voluntary dietary restraint practiced in either Sanamahi or Vaishnava tradition), which the text does not address. The error condemned is a theological claim (marriage/certain foods are inherently defiling), not the practice of restraint itself. |
| exercise yourself unto godliness | γύμναζε σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν | gymnaze seauton pros eusebeian | train/exercise yourself toward godliness | disciplined spiritual training, contrasted with mere bodily exercise (4:8) | train yourself for godliness | 4:7-8 | See godliness entry, Ch. 6, for full risk discussion. |
| living God, Savior of all people | θεὸς ζῶν, σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων | theos zōn, sōtēr pantōn anthrōpōn | living God, savior of all men | God’s universal saving intention, qualified by “especially of those who believe” | the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe | 4:10 | [NEW] Risk: High. Must preserve the text’s genuine universal-offer language (echoing the Romans-baseline Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine) while retaining the qualifying “especially of those who believe,” avoiding both a universalist misreading (all are automatically saved) and an unduly narrow misreading that drops the universal offer entirely. |
| example/pattern | τύπος | typos | a stamp, pattern, model | a pattern for others to imitate | example, pattern, model | 4:12 | [NEW] Risk: Low. Proposed: মৈনা ওইনা লৈবা (maina oina leiba, “being a pattern/model”). |
| the gift | χάρισμα | charisma | a gift of grace | Spirit-given enablement for ministry | the gift | 4:14 | REUSED: থাওয়াইগী খুদোল (spiritual_gifts) — Medium. |
| prophecy | προφητεία | prophēteia | a prophetic utterance | Spirit-inspired declaration accompanying Timothy’s commissioning | prophecy | 4:14 | REUSED: ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল — Low. |
| laying on of hands | ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν | epithesis tōn cheirōn | the placing-on of hands | a commissioning gesture accompanying prophetic recognition of gifting | laying on of hands | 4:14 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: খুৎ থাম্বা (khut thamba, “laying on of hands”). Must be distinguished from a maibi/maiba’s ritual touch or blessing gesture during Lai Haraoba, and from a Vaishnava guru’s diksha (initiation) hand-gesture; this is a commissioning act recognizing Spirit-given gifting already present, not a magical transfer of power or a guru-lineage initiation rite. |
| council of elders | πρεσβυτέριον | presbyterion | the body of elders | the assembled eldership | the council of elders, the presbytery | 4:14 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: কলিসিয়াগী অহলশিংগী পুন্না (kalisiyagi ahalshinggi punna, “the assembled body of church elders”), built on the elder term (see ch. 5). |
Chapter 5 — Widows, Elders, and the Household of Faith
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| widow | χήρα | chēra | a woman bereft [of husband] | a woman whose husband has died | widow | 5:3-16, throughout | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed provisional rendering: মপুরোইবা সিরবা নুপী (mapuroiba siraba nupi, “a woman whose husband has died”), a descriptive compound built on established roots (মপু, cf. মপু ইবুংগো; সিবা, cf. resurrection root সিবদগী). [NEEDS NATIVE SPEAKER CONFIRMATION]: an existing single-word Meitei term for “widow” may already be current in Manipuri usage and, if attested, should be preferred over this descriptive compound; confirm before Phase 2 deployment. Doctrine: Care for Widows and the Household of Faith (named curriculum doctrine). |
| the widow indeed / real widow | ἡ ὄντως χήρα | hē ontōs chēra | the widow who is really/actually so | a widow with no family support, genuinely dependent on the church | a widow indeed, a genuine widow | 5:3,5,16 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: অচুম্বা মপুরোইবা সিরবা নুপী (achumba mapuroiba siraba nupi, “a true/genuine widow”), qualifying the base term with অচুম্বা [REUSED root, righteousness family]. |
| repay/show piety to their own household | εὐσέβειαν ἀποδιδόναι τῷ ἰδίῳ οἴκῳ | eusebeian apodidonai tō idiō oikō | to render godliness/piety back to one’s own household | filial duty as an expression of godliness | show godliness to their own family, repay their parents | 5:4 | Uses godliness root [NEW, see Ch. 6] applied to family duty; Risk High — connects Godliness and Contentment doctrine to Care for Widows/Household of Faith doctrine, teaching that genuine godliness is proven first in ordinary family care, a point of strong natural resonance with Meitei family/clan (yumnak) obligation norms — a positive point of cultural contact worth naming explicitly. |
| denied the faith | τὴν πίστιν ἤρνηται | tēn pistin ērnētai | has denied/disowned the faith | failing to provide for one’s own family, likened to apostasy | denied the faith, worse than an unbeliever | 5:8 | Uses REUSED faith [থাজবা] with a negation; Risk High — a strong statement equating family neglect with practical apostasy; must be preserved without softening. |
| enrolled (widow registry) | καταλέγω | katalegō | to enroll, list, register | formal church recognition/support list | be enrolled, be put on the list | 5:9 | [NEW] Risk: Low-Medium. Proposed: মিং থিনবা (ming thinba, “to enter/register a name”). |
| elder | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | older person, elder | (a) an older person generally (5:1-2) or (b) the recognized church office of elder (5:17,19) — same word, context-dependent | elder | 5:1,17,19 | [NEW] Risk: Medium-High. Context-sensitive, parallel to the baseline’s handling of “called.” Proposed: office sense — কলিসিয়াগী অহল (kalisiyagi ahal, “church elder”), built on অহল, the ordinary Meitei term of respect for a senior/elder person. General-respect sense (5:1-2, addressing an older man/woman) may use অহল alone without কলিসিয়াগী. Must be taught as distinct from — while drawing a deliberate positive point of contact with — the general Meitei ahal-lamal (elder-respect) social structure; the office of elder carries specific teaching/governing/examined qualifications (paralleling ἐπίσκοπος, 3:1-7) beyond mere age-based social seniority. |
| double honor | διπλῆς τιμῆς | diplēs timēs | double honor/value | material and respect-based support, likely including remuneration | double honor | 5:17 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Proposed: নীশুবনা ইকাই খুম্নবা (nishubuna ikai khumnaba, “double honor”). Positive cultural resonance with Meitei elder-respect norms (ahal-lamal) — worth naming as a point of contact, while clarifying the material-support dimension the text also intends. |
| two or three witnesses | δύο ἢ τριῶν μαρτύρων | dyo ē triōn martyrōn | two or three witnesses | due-process standard for church discipline against an elder | two or three witnesses | 5:19 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Connects to Guarding the Deposit doctrine’s due-process dimension; render plainly. |
| rebuke in the presence of all | ἐνώπιον πάντων ἔλεγχε | enōpion pantōn elegche | reprove/rebuke before all | public church discipline for persisting sinning elders | rebuke publicly, reprove before everyone | 5:20 | [NEW] Risk: Medium-High. Honor/shame dynamics flagged per the AI instruction set’s general rule; requires native speaker review for tone (public correction carries significant honor/shame weight in Meitei social context) even though not independently Critical/Theologian-tier. |
| keep yourself pure | σεαυτὸν ἁγνὸν τήρει | seauton hagnon tērei | keep yourself pure/chaste | personal moral purity, esp. re: church-office conduct | keep yourself pure | 5:22 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Note: ἁγνός (hagnos, “pure/chaste”) is again a distinct Greek word from ἅγιος (hagios, REUSED holy: অসেংবা); propose শেংবা-adjacent but personal-purity-specific rendering, e.g., মশা শেংনা থম্বা (masha shengna thamba, “keeping oneself clean/pure”), while ensuring শেংবা itself remains reserved (per baseline note) for the physical/ritual-cleanliness sense, distinct from this moral-purity sense; flag for native speaker disambiguation. |
Chapter 6 — Godliness and Contentment, Love of Money, the Good Confession, Guarding the Deposit
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Meaning | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| slaves/bondservants and masters | δοῦλοι, δεσπόταις | douloi, despotais | slaves, masters/despots | first-century household slavery relations | slaves/bondservants, masters | 6:1-2 | [NEW] Risk: Medium. Descriptive of first-century social structure; must not be applied anachronistically to any contemporary Manipur labor, bonded-service, or debt-servitude context without careful pastoral framing distinguishing biblical-era household slavery from and rejecting any coercive modern labor practice; flag for native speaker/theologian sensitivity review before use in teaching material. |
| godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | reverence, piety, God-focused devotion | devout, reverent life oriented toward and pleasing to God, expressed in practical conduct | godliness, piety, devotion | 6:3,5,6,11; also 3:16; 4:7-8; 5:4 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. This is the single most theologically load-bearing new term in 1 Timothy, occurring at the heart of the Godliness and Contentment doctrine and undergirding “the mystery of godliness” (3:16). Proposed: তেংবাং মপুবু ইকাই খুম্নবা (Tengban Mapubu ikai khumnaba, “reverence/honor toward God”), built entirely on established roots (তেংবাং মপু + ইকাই খুম্নবা, honor). CRITICAL: must be sharply distinguished from (a) Manipuri Vaishnavism’s ভক্তি (bhakti, devotional love-service to Krishna, already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for faith) and from (b) Sanamahi ritual piety and purification observance toward Sanamahi/Pakhangba/the Umang Lai. Biblical godliness in 1 Timothy is the practical, whole-life fruit of sound apostolic doctrine (contrasted explicitly at 6:3-5 with false teachers who treat “godliness” as a means of material gain) — not a devotional emotion, ritual observance, or merit-building practice. This term requires a dedicated theologian-authored teaching note wherever it first occurs. |
| godliness is a means of gain | πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν | porismon einai tēn eusebeian | [supposing] godliness is a way of gain | the false teachers’ error: treating religious devotion as a path to material profit | godliness is a means of financial gain | 6:5 | [NEW] Risk: High. Must be taught as a warning against transactional religion generally; note the functional (not moral-equivalence) parallel with any votive-exchange logic — offerings or vows made at an Umang Lai shrine or Vaishnava temple explicitly for material blessing — worth naming carefully as a point of contrast for teaching purposes, without implying that all vow or offering practice in either tradition equals this specific condemned error. |
| great gain | πορισμὸς μέγας | porismos megas | great profit/gain | contrasted with 6:5’s false view — the TRUE great gain is “godliness with contentment” (6:6) | great gain | 6:6 | Same root as above; render consistently to preserve Paul’s deliberate ironic contrast (false “gain,” 6:5, vs. true “gain,” 6:6). |
| contentment | αὐτάρκεια | autarkeia | self-sufficiency, satisfaction with what one has | inner satisfaction independent of external circumstance, rooted in trust in God’s provision | contentment | 6:6, cf. Philippians 4:11 | [NEW] Risk: Medium-High. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment (named curriculum doctrine). Proposed: য়াম্না থাম্লবা (yamna thamlaba, “being satisfied/content with what is enough”). Must be distinguished from the Vaishnava ascetic-renunciation ideal (vairagya, detachment from desire as a spiritual technique for merit) and from any Sanamahi simplicity ethic; biblical contentment flows from trust in God’s fatherly provision and the sufficiency of godliness itself (6:6), not from a renunciation-discipline practiced for spiritual advancement. |
| brought nothing into the world | οὐδὲν εἰσηνέγκαμεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον | ouden eisēnegkamen eis ton kosmon | we brought nothing into the world | the basis for contentment: humans arrive and depart with nothing material | we brought nothing into the world | 6:7 | Low-Medium risk; standard vocabulary. |
| love of money | φιλαργυρία | philargyria | love of silver/money | the specific vice named as “a root of all kinds of evils” | love of money, the love of money | 6:10 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: শেলবু নুংশীবা (sel-bu nungshiba, “loving money”). Must not be softened; the “root of all kinds of evils” indictment (6:10) must be preserved at full force. |
| flee … pursue | φεῦγε … δίωκε | pheuge … diōke | flee … pursue | contrasting imperatives: flee love-of-money-driven error, pursue Christian virtue | flee these things; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness | 6:11 | Uses REUSED righteousness [অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক] and faith [থাজবা] plus the [NEW] godliness term above; render the virtue-list consistently with established renderings. |
| fight the good fight | ἀγωνίζου τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα | agōnizou ton kalon agōna | contend/struggle the good contest | athletic/military metaphor for sustained Christian faithfulness | fight the good fight | 6:12; also 1:18 | [NEW] Risk: Low-Medium. Proposed: ফজরবা লান শাবা (phajaraba lan shaba, “fighting the good fight/battle”). |
| take hold of eternal life | ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς | epilabou tēs aiōniou zōēs | lay hold of the eternal life | grasping the promised eternal life to which one is called | take hold of eternal life | 6:12,19 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: অহৌবা হিংবা (ahouba hingba, “unending/eternal life”). Must not be conflated with মোক্ষ (already forbidden per baseline for salvation) or reincarnation-cycle escape; eternal life here is unending personal life in fellowship with God through Christ, secured at conversion and consummated at the resurrection — not liberation from samsara or a devotee’s hoped-for absorption into Krishna’s presence. |
| the good confession | ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία | hē kalē homologia | the good confession/acknowledgment | (a) Timothy’s own confession of faith (6:12) and (b) Christ’s confession before Pilate (6:13) | the good confession | 6:12-13 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: ফজরবা লৌখৎপা (phajaraba loukhatpa, “the good confession”). Doctrine: connects directly to the Romans baseline’s Lordship-confession consistency rule (Romans 10:9, “Jesus is Lord”); teach as a personal, exclusive, once-for-all testimony of allegiance to Christ, categorically distinct from repeated devotional utterance/mantra-recitation (e.g., japa, the repeated chanting of Krishna’s names practiced in Vaishnava devotion) — the good confession is a decisive declaration, not a repeated devotional practice. |
| King of kings and Lord of lords | βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων | basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn | king of the ones reigning, lord of the ones ruling | Christ’s supreme, singular sovereignty over all other authorities | King of kings and Lord of lords | 6:15 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. Built on REUSED lord [মপু ইবুংগো]. Proposed: লৈপাক্কী লৈপাকশিংগী লৈপাক অমসুং মপুশিংগী মপু (leipakki leipakshinggi leipak amasung mapushinggi mapu). CRITICAL: must not be taught in a way that resonates with the historic Meitei ningthou (king) political theology of divine descent from the serpent-ancestor Pakhangba, as though Christ were merely the supreme instance of a similar royal-divine class; Christ’s kingship is categorically, uniquely supreme — not the apex of an existing royal-divine lineage system. |
| immortal, dwelling in unapproachable light | ἀφθαρσίαν ἔχων, φῶς οἰκῶν ἀπρόσιτον | aphtharsian echōn, phōs oikōn aprositon | possessing immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light | God’s transcendent, unmediated glory | who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light | 6:16 | [NEW] Risk: High. Connects to REUSED glory [মতিক চাউবা]; avoid staging-metaphor language that could resonate with the visually radiant divine-presence effects of Ras Lila performance, as already flagged in the baseline glory entry. |
| guard the deposit | τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον | tēn parathēkēn phylaxon | keep watch over the thing entrusted for safekeeping | protecting the apostolic body of revealed doctrine entrusted to the church | guard/keep the deposit [entrusted to you] | 6:20 | [NEW] Risk: CRITICAL. Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith (named curriculum doctrine); this is the letter’s climactic charge. Proposed: থাজবগী থম্বিবা ঙাকপা (thajabagi thambiba ngakpa, “guarding the entrusted deposit of the faith”), built on REUSED থাজবা. CRITICAL CAUTION: must not be confused with (a) a maibi/maiba’s guardianship of sacred ritual objects or secret knowledge associated with an Umang Lai shrine, nor (b) the historically fraught category of “sacred manuscripts entrusted for safekeeping” evoked by the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of the puya — a genuine and painful point of Meitei cultural memory around lost/destroyed entrusted sacred texts (already flagged in the Romans baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine). This curriculum should teach “guarding the deposit” as guarding a living, openly transmitted, apostolic body of revealed doctrine passed on through teaching and faithful transmission — not a physical relic, a secret esoteric teaching, or an object whose loss would constitute an irrecoverable rupture — while remaining sensitive to how loaded the “entrusted-and-lost” narrative pattern is in Meitei cultural memory. Mandatory human theologian review. |
| irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge | βεβήλους κενοφωνίας καὶ ἀντιθέσεις τῆς ψευδωνύμου γνώσεως | bebēlous kenophōnias kai antitheseis tēs pseudōnymou gnōseōs | profane empty-talk and contradictions of falsely-named knowledge | polemic against a rival speculative “knowledge” system (proto-Gnostic in later reception) | irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge | 6:20 | [NEW] Risk: High. Proposed: থোইদোকপা ৱারী অমসুং মিং তকপা খংবগী য়াইফম-ৱারী (thoidokpa wari amasung ming takpa khangbagi yaifam-wari, “empty talk and disputes of falsely-named knowledge”), reusing থোইদোকপা ৱারী established at 1:4. Relevant to any competing esoteric-knowledge claim, whether the original proto-Gnostic-type speculation Paul addressed, or a contemporary occult/esoteric-knowledge framework; teach that the church must be discerning about doctrinal content, not that “knowledge” itself is suspect. |
