Core Glossary

08 Core Glossary — Ephesians | English → Manipuri

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by the curriculum’s nine core doctrines. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked (Romans TM — reused) and MUST be used exactly as recorded there; no alternative rendering is permitted. New terms proposed for Ephesians are marked NEW and must be added to translation_memory.json (with version increment) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the Pre-flight Checklist in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.

Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

Doctrine 1: Salvation by Grace through Faith

English TermOriginal (Transliteration)Manipuri RenderingTransliterationRiskChapter RefsStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
graceχάρις / charisমথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাংmathou tadana piba tengbangCritical1:2,6-7; 2:5,7-8; 4:7; 6:24ReusedNever কৃপা (bhakti-responsive Krishna-favor) without explicit contrast. Eph 2:8-9 is this curriculum’s thesis-adjacent statement, structurally parallel to Romans 1:16-17; must render identically at every occurrence.
faithπίστις / pistisথাজবাthajabaHigh1:1,15; 2:8; 3:12,17; 4:5,13; 6:16,23ReusedNever ভক্তি (bhakti). Object of faith (grace, Christ) always named in context.
salvation / savedσωτηρία, σῴζω / sōtēria, sōzōঅহানবাahanbaCritical2:5,8; 6:17ReusedNever মোক্ষ or devotional union with Krishna.
worksἔργα / ergaথবকthabakCritical2:9-10NEWRejected as ground of salvation (v.9) yet affirmed as its fruit (v.10) — same word, opposite function; mandatory translator note distinguishing the two uses. Must be explicitly contrasted with bhakti সেবা (devotional service building toward divine favor).
good worksἔργα ἀγαθά / erga agathaঅফবা থবকaphaba thabakMedium2:10NEWFruit of salvation, never its root; teach ordering: grace → faith → salvation → good works.
boastκαυχάομαι / kauchaomaiচাউথোকপাchauthokpaHigh2:9NEWRhetorical hinge of the core passage; preserve full force, no softening. Parallel to Romans 3:27; 4:2.
giftδῶρον / dōronখুদোলkhudolHigh2:8NEW (reused root)Same root as spiritual_gifts (থাওয়াইগী খুদোল); here applied to the gift of salvation itself.
mercyἔλεος / eleosচানবাchanbaHigh2:4NEWCAUTION: ISKCON-influenced Vaishnava literature in Manipur frequently glosses কৃপা as “mercy” in English; must be taught as God’s compassion toward the helpless-dead sinner, not bhakti-responsive favor.
dead (spiritually)νεκρός / nekrosথাওয়ায়দা সিবাthawaida sibaHigh2:1,5NEWDistinguish from Sanamahi ancestor-spirit veneration (Apokpa), where “the dead” remain active family presences.
trespassesπαράπτωμα / paraptōmaঅশোয়বাashoibaMedium2:1,5; 1:7NEWKeep distinct from পাপ (sin, Romans TM) so the doubled Greek phrase in 2:1 is not flattened.
wrath (of God)ὀργή / orgēতেংবাং মপুগী অহোংবাTengban Mapugi ahongbaHigh2:3; 5:6NEWPersonal, judicial displeasure — never impersonal karma, and never resolved by ritual appeasement of a household or Umang Lai spirit.
redemptionἀπολύτρωσις / apolytrōsisমমল পীদুনা হানবাmamal piduna hanbaCritical1:7,14; 4:30NEWDistinguish from ritual ransom/offering economies (Umang Lai appeasement offerings; prayaschitta karmic-debt logic already flagged under baseline “sin”). A completed historical transaction, not an ongoing ritual relationship.
forgivenessἄφεσις / aphesisময়ামদা কোকপাmayamda kokpaMedium1:7NEW (baseline-rejected-alt repurposed)The baseline rejected this phrase as too narrow for justification; here it is the correct standalone term for forgiveness, distinct from and subordinate to justification.
workmanship / createdποίημα, κτίζω / poiēma, ktizōশেমগৎপিবা / শেম্বাshemgatpiba / shembaMedium2:10NEWNew-creation language; salvation and the resulting life are God’s making, not self-improvement or unlocked devotional potential.

Never ৱাইফম, never framed against Pakhangba-lineage royal predestination or Vaishnava jyotish astrological determinism; a personal, loving decision (1:5), not a cosmic mechanism.
adoptionυἱοθεσία / huiothesiaমচা ওইনা লৌবাmacha oina loubaHigh1:5ReusedExplicit inheritance-rights teaching required; no ready equivalent in birth-lineage-based yumnak kinship.

Relational/organic metaphor, not a claim about a ritual medium or object.
head (of the church)κεφαλή / kephalēকোকkokHigh1:22; 4:15; 5:23NEWChrist’s headship over the church is the model behind the household-code use of the same term (Doctrine 7); always teach with Christ’s self-giving pattern attached.

devil / Satanδιάβολος, Σατανᾶς / diabolos, Satanasশয়তানShoitanCritical2:2; 4:27; 6:11NEWTransliterated loanword, established regional Christian convention. A specific personal fallen being — never a generic hostile Umang Lai spirit, never an asura/demon of Krishna-mythology.

Critical Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং
Transliteration: mathou tadana piba tengbang
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: কৃপা (bhakti-responsive Krishna-favor, avoid as the primary term), পুণ্য (merit accumulated through devotional service/seva, never use)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Occurs at 1:2,6-7; 2:5,7-8; 4:7; 6:24. Ephesians 2:8-9 is this curriculum’s thesis-adjacent statement, structurally parallel to Romans 1:16-17, and must render identically at every occurrence. Never let it collapse into bhakti-responsive কৃপা without explicit contrast. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Righteousness

Approved rendering: অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক
Transliteration: achumba chatnabirak
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ধর্ম (avoid the broad Hindu-derived sense of cosmic/religious duty)

Occurs in the armor-of-God list as the ‘breastplate of righteousness’ (6:14). Right standing before God received through faith, not ধর্ম-style religious duty. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Justification

Approved rendering: অচুম্বা ওইহনবা
Transliteration: achumba oihanba
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ময়ামদা কোকপা (forgiveness alone, too narrow)

The forensic ‘being declared righteous’ sense underlies Ephesians’ salvation argument even where the specific noun is not repeated; must never be abbreviated to mere forgiveness (see forgiveness entry below, which IS the correct standalone term for a related but distinct concept at Eph 1:7). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Salvation

Approved rendering: অহানবা
Transliteration: ahanba
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: মোক্ষ (Vaishnava/Hindu liberation, never use), লাইনিং (union/absorption into a deity’s divine presence, never use)
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω
Category: Salvation

Occurs at 2:5,8; 6:17. Never মোক্ষ or a devotee’s hoped-for union with Krishna. Eph 2:8-9 is this curriculum’s thesis-adjacent statement; must render identically at every occurrence. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা
Transliteration: sibadagi hingjat-lakpa
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation, never use)
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω
Category: Eschatology

Occurs at 1:20; 2:6. Never পুনর্জন্ম. Bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection, the basis of believers’ present co-resurrection with Christ in 2:6. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Lord

Approved rendering: মপু ইবুংগো
Transliteration: Mapu Ibungo
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ঠাকুর (a devotional title for Krishna in Manipuri Vaishnava usage, never use)

Category: Christology

Occurs throughout Ephesians (1:2,3,15,17; 4:1,5; 5:8,10,17,19,20,22; 6:1,4,7-9,10,21,23,24, etc.). CRITICAL DISTINCTION extended for Ephesians 6:5-9: this honorific ইবুংগো must NEVER be attached to the plain word মপু (master) when it refers to a human slaveholder/employer — see master_human entry below. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi machanupa
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: অবতার (avatar, never use)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Occurs at 4:13 (‘the knowledge of the Son of God’). Never অবতার. Full, eternal, co-equal divine Sonship, not one avatar among Vishnu’s recognized avatar sequence. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Approved rendering: মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা
Transliteration: miwoigi mahai louba
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: অবতার (never use)
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (theological category)

Messiah

Approved rendering: ক্রিস্তো
Transliteration: Christo
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

Used throughout Ephesians as Christ’s name/title. Not one avatar among Vishnu’s recognized avatar sequence. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Original: θεός
Category: God

The established Manipuri Christian term for God; deliberately preferred over both ঠাকুর and সানামাহি. Root for numerous Ephesians compounds (Tengban Mapugi khanba, Tengban Mapugi imung, Tengban Mapugi lanthang, etc.). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: থাওয়াই অসেংবা
Transliteration: Thawai Asengba

Category: God

Occurs at 1:13; 4:30; 5:18. Must always appear in full. This rule is EXTENDED in Ephesians to two new combination terms: grieve_holy_spirit and filled_with_spirit (see Section B), both of which must carry থাওয়াই অসেংবা in full, never bare থাওয়াই. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Father

Approved rendering: ইপা
Transliteration: Ipa
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Occurs at 1:2,3,17; 2:18; 3:14; 4:6; 5:20; 6:2,23. God as personal Father, chosen for warmth and intimacy rather than a royal-divine title tied to the Pakhangba lineage tradition. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering: পীথোকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক
Transliteration: pithokpa achumba chatnabirak
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: ফংলকপা অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness earned/obtained by one’s own effort, the explicit rejected opposite)

Root পীথোকপা (given/credited) is reused in two new Ephesians compounds: guarantee (মমাংগী পীথোকপা) and sacrificial_offering (তেংবাং মপুদা পীথোকপা), see Section B. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Works

Approved rendering: থবক
Transliteration: thabak
Doctrine: Works Excluded as the Ground of Salvation
Rejected alternatives: সেবা (bhakti devotional service understood to build toward Krishna’s favor, never use as a substitute or equivalent)
Original: ἔργα
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Eph 2:9 explicitly excludes works as the ground of salvation, yet the identical word থবক reappears in 2:10 for good works as salvation’s fruit (see good_works). MANDATORY translator note required at every occurrence distinguishing the two uses. Must be explicitly contrasted with bhakti সেবা.

Redemption

Approved rendering: মমল পীদুনা হানবা
Transliteration: mamal piduna hanba
Doctrine: Redemption through Christ’s Blood
Rejected alternatives: ritual ransom/appeasement offerings to an Umang Lai or ancestral spirit, never use as a parallel, the karmic-debt logic of prayaschitta atonement rituals, never use as a parallel
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Eph 1:7,14; 4:30. A single, finished historical transaction (Christ’s blood), not an ongoing ritual debt-servicing relationship with a spiritual power.

Predestined

Approved rendering: মমাংগী মথংদা খনবা
Transliteration: mamangi mathangda khanba
Doctrine: Predestination unto Adoption
Rejected alternatives: ৱাইফম (impersonal fate, never use), the Pakhangba royal-lineage descent framework of divinely predetermined kingship, never use as a parallel, Vaishnava jyotish astrological determinism, never use as a parallel
Original: προορίζω
Category: Election

NEW TERM, built on the baseline election root (খনবা) for continuity. Eph 1:5,11. A personal, relational, loving decision (‘in love,’ 1:5), never an impersonal cosmic mechanism. This ‘in love’ qualifier must travel with the term wherever it is taught.

Mystery

Approved rendering: লুকখিবা থৌরাং
Transliteration: lukkhiba thourang
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Rejected alternatives: esoteric/confidential devotional knowledge (rasa-tattva, guhya-tattva) disclosed progressively to advancing bhakti initiates through Ras Lila, never use as a parallel, Sanamahi ritual/cosmological knowledge guarded by maibi/maiba specialists and the puya textual tradition, never use as a parallel
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Mystery

NEW TERM, the single highest-salience collision risk in the entire book. Eph 1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19. Must be taught at EVERY occurrence as God’s plan now fully and publicly disclosed to all believers through the gospel — the opposite structure of any graded esoteric disclosure. Built on the baseline providence root (থৌরাং).

Principalities And Powers

Approved rendering: অসোইবা থাওয়াই পাংগলশিং
Transliteration: asoiba thawai panggalshing
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Powers of Darkness
Rejected alternatives: Umang Lai (benevolent guardian deities honored, not warred against, in Sanamahi practice), never use as a parallel, শক্তি (maibi trance-power, already forbidden by the baseline for God’s own power), never use
Original: ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι, κοσμοκράτορες, πνευματικά τῆς πονηρίας
Category: Spiritual Warfare

NEW TERM, the single highest-stakes translation decision in the entire book for the Manipuri context. Eph 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12. The ‘evil/hostile’ qualifier (অসোইবা) is built into the term itself so it cannot default to a neutral or benevolent spirit-being reading. Requires explicit, careful pastoral framing at every occurrence to avoid casting an actively venerated local guardian-deity category as demonic.

Devil

Approved rendering: শয়তান
Transliteration: Shoitan
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Powers of Darkness
Rejected alternatives: a hostile Umang Lai spirit, never use — Umang Lai are generally regarded as benevolent guardian deities in Sanamahi practice, not moral adversaries, an asura/demon figure from Krishna-mythology (e.g. Kamsa, Putana), never use — a different narrative and cosmological framework
Original: διάβολος / Σατανᾶς
Category: Spiritual Warfare

NEW transliterated term, following established South Asian Christian-translation convention, chosen specifically because transliteration avoids both collision risks a native paraphrase would create. Eph 2:2; 4:27; 6:11. A single, specific, personal fallen being.

Idolatry

Approved rendering: মুর্তি খুরুম্বা
Transliteration: murti khurumba
Doctrine: The Warning Against Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: euphemistic invention obscuring the term’s real-world referent, never use — would weaken the pastoral teaching moment Ephesians itself creates
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM, among the most pastorally sensitive terms in the entire curriculum. Eph 5:5. Names, in ordinary Manipuri religious vocabulary, practices central to living Manipuri Vaishnava temple devotion (murti veneration) and, distinctly, Sanamahi household/grove-shrine practice. MUST be taught within Ephesians’ own argument (covetousness itself is idolatry, 5:3-5), never as polemic against neighbors’ or family members’ living devotional practice, since both traditions remain the actual religious identity of most Meitei people, including many believers’ own families.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: নুংঙাইবগী পাউ
Transliteration: nungngaibagi pao
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Occurs at Ephesians 1:13; 3:6; 6:15,19. Must be distinguished from festive announcements associated with the Vaishnava devotional calendar (e.g. Ras Lila performances). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Faith

Approved rendering: থাজবা
Transliteration: thajaba
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ভক্তি (bhakti, devoted loving worship, too specific to the Vaishnava devotional framework)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Occurs at 1:1,15; 2:8; 3:12,17; 4:5,13; 6:16,23. Object of faith must always be named in context. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Transliteration: koubagi thoudang
Doctrine: Divine Calling

Transliteration: asengba
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: শেংবা (physically clean, ritual-purity sense only)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Occurs at 1:1,4; 2:21; 5:27. Moral purity and set-apartness for God; শেংবা reserved for physical/ritual cleanliness only. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Saints

Approved rendering: অসেংবা মীওই
Transliteration: asengba miwoi
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: গোসাঞি/বৈষ্ণব (a Vaishnava renunciant devotee title, never use for the corporate biblical sense)
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Occurs at 1:1,15,18; 3:8,18; 4:12; 5:3; 6:18. Corporate address to all believers, not a specialist ascetic class. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: অসেংবা ওইহনবা
Transliteration: asengba oihanba
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός / ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification

Adoption

Approved rendering: মচা ওইনা লৌবা
Transliteration: macha oina louba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: υἱοθεσία
Category: Salvation

Occurs at 1:5. Full inheritance-rights sense must be taught explicitly against traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) birth-lineage kinship. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Sin

Approved rendering: পাপ
Transliteration: pap
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin

Occurs at 2:1, paired with ‘trespasses’ (অশোয়বা, see Section B) — kept distinct so the doubled Greek phrase of Eph 2:1 is not flattened into one repeated Manipuri word. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Glory

Approved rendering: মতিক চাউবা
Transliteration: matik chauba
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Occurs at 1:6,12,14,17,18; 3:13,16,21. Avoid metaphors that could conflate with Ras Lila performance staging’s visual evocation of Krishna’s own radiance. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering: থাজবগী ইনবা
Transliteration: thajabagi inba
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: ভক্তিগী সেবা (devotional service performed out of bhakti, a works-based misreading)

Names the specific faith-produced obedience toward God; must be kept distinct from the household-code sense of ‘obey’ (ইনবা alone, see obey entry in Section B), which addresses obedience of children/servants toward a human authority. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi pangthok-thengnaba
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: শক্তি (associated with the ritual/oracular power of a maibi in Lai Haraoba trance, avoid as the primary term)
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God

Occurs at 1:19; 3:7,20 — the resurrection-power now at work in believers. Never শক্তি. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Covenant

Approved rendering: ৱারেপ্পা
Transliteration: wareppa
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: διαθῆκαι τῆς ἐπαγγελίας
Category: Covenant

Occurs at 2:12 (‘covenants of promise’). A relational covenant/promise bond. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Election

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi khanba
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ৱাইফম (fate/destiny, never use)
Original: ἐκλέγομαι
Category: Salvation

Occurs at 1:4,11. God’s sovereign, personal, pre-temporal choice ‘before the foundation of the world’; must not be assimilated to the historic Meitei royal-lineage framework of divinely predetermined kingship (Pakhangba descent). Root for the new term predestined (see Section B). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Providence

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী থৌরাং
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi thourang
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: ৱাইফম (fate, never use)
Original: βουλή τοῦ θελήματος αὐτοῦ
Category: God

Relevant at 1:11 (‘the counsel of his will’). Never ৱাইফম. Root reused in the new compound mystery (লুকখিবা থৌরাং, see Section B). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Abba

Approved rendering: আব্বা
Transliteration: Abba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family

Aramaic term of intimacy preserved as a transliteration; not directly attested in Ephesians’ text but retained in translation memory for cross-document consistency with the adoption doctrine developed at Eph 1:5. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Boast

Approved rendering: চাউথোকপা
Transliteration: chauthokpa
Doctrine: Works Excluded as the Ground of Salvation
Original: καυχάομαι
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Eph 2:9’s rhetorical hinge, parallel to Romans 3:27; 4:2. Preserve full force (‘no one may boast’) with no softening.

Gift

Approved rendering: খুদোল
Transliteration: khudol
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: δῶρον
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM sharing its root with the baseline spiritual_gifts compound (থাওয়াইগী খুদোল). Eph 2:8 applies this root to salvation itself, not merely Spirit-given enablement; this continuity should be taught.

Mercy

Approved rendering: চানবা
Transliteration: chanba
Doctrine: Mercy of God
Rejected alternatives: কৃপা (Krishna’s bhakti-responsive favor, frequently glossed ‘mercy’ in ISKCON-influenced English-language literature circulating in Manipur; never use)
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Eph 2:4 (‘rich in mercy’). CAUTION: direct lexical collision risk with ISKCON-influenced material’s English gloss of কৃপা as ‘mercy.’ Must be taught as God’s compassion toward the helpless-dead sinner (2:1-3), not bhakti-responsive favor toward an already-devoted worshiper.

Spiritual Deadness

Approved rendering: থাওয়ায়দা সিবা
Transliteration: thawaida siba
Doctrine: Universal Spiritual Deadness Apart from Christ
Rejected alternatives: framing drawn from Sanamahi ancestor-spirit veneration (Apokpa), never use as a parallel
Original: νεκρός (metaphorical, of persons)
Category: Sin

NEW TERM. Eph 2:1,5. Must be sharply distinguished from Sanamahi ancestor-spirit veneration, in which ‘the dead’ remain active, honored family presences. Ephesians’ ‘spiritually dead’ describes the living unbeliever’s standing before God, not a state of the departed.

Wrath

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী অহোংবা
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi ahongba
Doctrine: Wrath of God
Rejected alternatives: impersonal karmic-consequence framing accruing across lifetimes, never use, an appeasable household or Umang Lai spirit’s displeasure, ritually resolvable through offerings, never use
Original: ὀργή
Category: Sin

NEW TERM. Eph 2:3; 5:6. God’s personal, settled, judicial displeasure against sin, resolved only by grace through Christ, never by ritual remedy.

Inheritance

Approved rendering: চাদান
Transliteration: chadan
Doctrine: Adoption and Inheritance in God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: unmarked equivalence with ordinary yumnak clan birth-lineage inheritance, without explicit contrast, never use unqualified
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Election

NEW TERM. Eph 1:14,18. Must be taught explicitly against traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) inheritance, which runs through birth lineage administered by clan elders — believers’ inheritance is received by adoption/faith, not birth-lineage succession.

Sealed

Approved rendering: চুম্মৎ পীবা
Transliteration: chummat piba
Doctrine: Sealing by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: tilaka forehead-markings or tapta-mudrankana heated-stamp branding as applied in some Gaudiya Vaishnava initiation practice, never use as a parallel
Original: σφραγίζω
Category: Election

NEW TERM. Eph 1:13-14; 4:30. The Spirit’s seal is an internal, invisible, divinely-applied guarantee, not an external devotional badge earned or received at a rite of passage. Always paired with থাওয়াই অসেংবা in full.

Body Of Christ

Approved rendering: ক্রিস্তোগী হাকচাং
Transliteration: Christogi hakchang
Doctrine: The Church as the Body of Christ
Rejected alternatives: a maibi’s body understood as a ritual vessel/medium for spirit-indwelling during Lai Haraoba trance possession, never use as a parallel, a Vaishnava temple murti understood as literally embodying Krishna’s presence, never use as a parallel
Original: σῶμα Χριστοῦ
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Eph 1:23; 4:12,16; 5:23,30. A relational/organic metaphor for the corporate community’s unity and function, not a claim that Christ’s presence is contained within or channeled through a ritual object or human medium.

Approved rendering: কোক
Transliteration: kok
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church

NEW TERM serving both Christ’s headship over the church (1:22; 4:15; 5:23) and, by extension, the husband’s headship over the wife (5:23). MUST always carry its qualifier (Christ’s self-sacrificial love, 5:25) attached, never in isolation, to prevent a reading that authorizes unilateral domination. Enforced as a validation rule, not merely a teaching note.

Holy Temple

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী অসেংবা লৈফম
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi asengba leifam
Doctrine: The Church as God’s Holy Temple
Rejected alternatives: মন্দির (Vaishnava temple, never use — this extends the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule for ‘church’ explicitly to the metaphorical ‘temple’ usage of Eph 2:21-22)
Original: ναὸς ἅγιος / κατοικητήριον τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Eph 2:21-22. English ‘temple’ could tempt a translator toward মন্দির; লৈফম (dwelling place) avoids this entirely.

Cornerstone

Approved rendering: খ্বাইদগী মরুওইবা লু
Transliteration: khwaidagi maruoiba lu
Doctrine: The Church as God’s Holy Temple
Rejected alternatives: sacred stones/shrine-markers found at Umang Lai sacred groves, never use as a parallel, consecrated foundation-stones at Vaishnava temple sites, never use as a parallel
Original: ἀκρογωνιαῖος
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Eph 2:20. Christ as the structurally decisive foundation of the church’s identity, not a physical sacred object at a worship site.

Dividing Wall

Approved rendering: খায়দোকপগী লেপ্পা
Transliteration: khaidokpagi leppa
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: direct mapping onto Manipur’s contemporary inter-community ethnic tensions, never use as the primary framing
Original: τὸ μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ
Category: Unity

NEW TERM. Eph 2:14. Echoes the Jerusalem Temple’s Gentile-court barrier; resolves a specific, historical, covenantal (Jew/Gentile, Torah-based) division and must not be casually mapped onto present-day Manipur ethnic tensions, which are a different (social/political) kind of division.

One New Humanity

Approved rendering: অমা অনৌবা মীওই
Transliteration: ama anouba miwoi
Doctrine: One New Humanity in Christ
Original: εἷς καινός ἄνθρωπος
Category: Unity

NEW TERM. Eph 2:15. A genuinely new corporate humanity in Christ, not a merged hybrid of old categories. Shares its Manipuri wording with the individual ‘new self’ of 4:24 (new_self entry below); a MANDATORY disambiguating translator note is required at every occurrence of either sense.

Reconciliation

Approved rendering: ইনগবা ওইহনবা
Transliteration: ingba oihanba
Doctrine: One New Humanity in Christ
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Unity

NEW TERM built on the baseline ইনগবা (peace) root, using the ‘X ওইহনবা’ pattern already established for justification/sanctification. Eph 2:16: Christ reconciles both Jew and Gentile to God and to one another in a single act through the cross.

Schemes Of The Devil

Approved rendering: শয়তানগী লাংবা থবক
Transliteration: Shoitangi langba thabak
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Powers of Darkness
Original: μεθοδεία
Category: Spiritual Warfare

NEW TERM built on শয়তান. Eph 6:11. Names a personal, strategic spiritual adversary, not impersonal misfortune.

Armor Of God

Approved rendering: তেংবাং মপুগী লান্থাং
Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi lanthang
Doctrine: The Armor of God
Rejected alternatives: Thang-Ta martial-art ritual weaponry vocabulary, tied to Sanamahi Pakhangba/serpent-deity symbolism, never use as an endorsement or echo
Original: πανοπλία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Spiritual Warfare

NEW TERM, built on genuine Meitei war-vocabulary roots (লান/থাং) deliberately kept generic, not Thang-Ta-specific. Eph 6:11,13. A Pauline metaphor for spiritual equipment (truth, righteousness, gospel, faith, salvation, the Spirit’s word), not an endorsement of ritual martial-arts weaponry.

Submission

Approved rendering: ইনবা
Transliteration: inba
Doctrine: Household Codes: Marriage as Christ and the Church
Rejected alternatives: unilateral clan-elder/patriarchal yumnak authority as the sole governing frame, never use unqualified, residual royal-household hierarchical framing drawn from the historic Meitei court, never use as the sole frame
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household

NEW TERM/context built on the baseline obedience_of_faith root (ইনবা). Eph 5:21,22,24. Governing principle is MUTUAL submission (5:21), framing the whole household-code section; must never be taught as one-directional.

Master Human

Approved rendering: মপু
Transliteration: mapu
Doctrine: Household Codes: Servants and Masters
Rejected alternatives: attaching the honorific ইবুংগো to this human-master sense, ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN — ইবুংগো is reserved exclusively for মপু ইবুংগো, the divine Lord Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος (of a slave)
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Eph 6:5,9. CRITICAL DISTINCTION: the plain word for a human slaveholder/employer must never carry the honorific ইবুংগো, even though the same Greek word (κύριος) is used for both the human master and Christ’s Lordship. This preserves the baseline’s Critical Lordship-of-Christ boundary. Enforced as an absolute validation rule.

Old Self

Approved rendering: মমাংগী মীওই
Transliteration: mamangi miwoi
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self, Putting On the New Self
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Eph 4:22. The believer’s former, unregenerate identity, to be decisively ‘put off’ like a garment.

New Self

Approved rendering: অনৌবা মীওই
Transliteration: anouba miwoi
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self, Putting On the New Self
Original: καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Eph 4:24. Shares its Manipuri wording with the corporate ‘one new humanity’ of 2:15 (one_new_humanity entry above); a MANDATORY disambiguating translator note is required at every occurrence of either sense to prevent conflating individual sanctification with corporate ecclesiology.

Impurity

Approved rendering: শেংদবা
Transliteration: shengdaba
Doctrine: The Warning Against Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: the অ-শেংবা negation pattern, never use — creates a near-homophonic collision with অসেংবা (holy)
Original: ἀκαθαρσία
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Eph 5:3. Deliberately formed with the ‘-দবা’ negation pattern specifically to avoid collision with অসেংবা (holy); this construction choice must never be ‘corrected’ back toward the অ- prefix pattern.

Grieve Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: থাওয়াই অসেংবাবু ওকপা
Transliteration: thawai asengbabu okpa
Doctrine: Sealing by the Holy Spirit
Original: λυπέω τὸ Πνεῦμα
Category: Sanctification

NEW combination term. Eph 4:30. Must always carry থাওয়াই অসেংবা (baseline Critical term) in full, never bare থাওয়াই.

Filled With Spirit

Approved rendering: থাওয়াই অসেংবানা মপুং হানবা
Transliteration: thawai asengbana mapung hanba
Doctrine: Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: confusion with a maibi’s trance-possession state during Lai Haraoba, never use as a parallel
Original: πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι
Category: Sanctification

NEW combination term joining থাওয়াই অসেংবা with the মপুং ফাবা (fullness) root. Eph 5:18. The ongoing, present-tense Spirit-filled life; both components must be checked for compliance at every occurrence.

No Partiality

Approved rendering: মীওই পুম্নমক্কী মপুংফাবা লান্থোকপা
Transliteration: miwoi pumnamakki mapungphaba lanthokpa
Doctrine: Household Codes: Servants and Masters
Original: προσωπολημψία (negated)
Category: Household

Reuses the baseline universal_human_accountability doctrine root. Eph 6:9: God’s impartial judgment regardless of social/household status, applied here to masters and servants alike.

Transliteration: tabidagi thabirakpa
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος

Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Occurs at 1:22; 3:10,21; 5:23-32. This baseline forbidden-substitution rule (never মন্দির) is explicitly extended in Ephesians to also cover the metaphorical ‘temple’ usage of 2:21-22 — see holy_temple entry in Section B. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Transliteration: Tengban Mapugi leipak
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ θεοῦ

Transliteration: yathang
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy

Category: Church

Relevant at 3:1-13 (Paul’s mission to the Gentiles) and 6:19-20 (ambassador). Frame as the church’s own calling, given the history of mission work’s entanglement with regional colonial-era memory and contemporary inter-community sensitivities. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Israel

Approved rendering: ইস্রায়েল
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant

Occurs at 2:12. Standard transliteration. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Ephesians.

Good Works

Approved rendering: অফবা থবক
Transliteration: aphaba thabak

Transliteration: ashoiba
Doctrine: Universal Spiritual Deadness Apart from Christ
Rejected alternatives: পাপ repeated as a substitute (would flatten Eph 2:1’s doubled Greek phrase into one repeated word)

Transliteration: mayamda kokpa
Doctrine: Redemption through Christ’s Blood
Original: ἄφεσις
Category: Salvation

NEW standalone use of a phrase the Romans baseline explicitly rejected as too narrow a substitute for ‘justification.’ Here, at Eph 1:7, it is the correct standalone term for forgiveness itself — a benefit of redemption, distinct from and subordinate to the fuller forensic status of justification (অচুম্বা ওইহনবা). Teach the distinction explicitly; do not conclude the phrase is banned outright.
