Doctrine Analysis
11 — Doctrine Analysis: Jude (English → Manipuri)
Purpose
This document is the full doctrine matrix for the book of Jude (1:1–25), produced under PRD Phase 1 Step 4. It maps every doctrine identified for this curriculum onto its supporting Jude passages, section by section, across the ENTIRE letter — not merely the core passage (Jude 1:3-23). Risk tiers, doctrine names, and review routings are held EXACTLY consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; no new doctrine is introduced here that is not already registered there, and no registered doctrine is omitted. Jude is a single-chapter epistle; “chapters” below refer to its natural rhetorical sections, each of which is confirmed reviewed even where a section contributes no new doctrine beyond one already tabulated.
Per the baseline Language Package, Manipuri’s religious landscape is engaged throughout as a live dual system — Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai forest deities honored through Lai Haraoba and its maibi trance-priestesses, undergoing active revival) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion expressed through the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila tradition) — never as a superseded-animism-then-Hinduism narrative.
Section 1: Salutation (Jude 1:1-2)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Servant Identity and Devotion to Christ | Medium | 1:1 | লান্মী (servant/slave) also names the historical Meitei institution of war-captive forced servitude to nobility. Must be taught as willing, honored total devotion/ownership to an absolute Master (cf. স্বামী মপু, 1:4), not that historical social-caste institution. Also reuses baseline কৌখিবা (called, High) and TM-reused ইচিন (brother, Low). | Native speaker review |
| Sanctified Love and Corrupted Fellowship (Love Feasts) | Medium | 1:2 (greeting: mercy, peace, love multiplied) | নুংশিবা (love/agape) in the opening greeting must be distinguished from the romantically-coded devotional love (prem) of Radha-Krishna Ras Lila devotion, a live point of cultural comparison for Meitei readers, even in this brief epistolary greeting. | Native speaker review |
| Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | High | 1:2 (mercy, peace, love be multiplied) | The greeting’s ৱারৈশিনবা (mercy) anchors the letter’s later pastoral command (1:22-23) and must not collapse into bhakti’s কৃপা from the letter’s very first lines. | Human theologian |
Section note: Verses 1:1-2 introduce no new doctrine beyond those already registered; both verses are reviewed and mapped above. No content is silently omitted.
Section 2: Occasion and Purpose Statement (Jude 1:3-4)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | Critical | 1:3 | The letter’s purpose-statement doctrine: the faith is a fixed, complete, once-for-all (অমুক্তা) deposit শিনবিখ্রবা (delivered/entrusted) to be defended (কান্না হোৎনবা), not an evolving revelation. Must be taught against three live local frameworks treating spiritual authority as ongoing or repeatable: Sanamahism’s continuing maibi trance-utterance during Lai Haraoba, Vaishnavism’s open avatar-descent sequence, and any reading of “contending” as bhakti-style devotional merit-accumulation (সেবা). The 1729 Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning memory makes “a preserved, complete deposit of faith” a theologically and culturally weighty claim requiring explicit, careful teaching. | Human theologian |
| Grace Perverted into a License for Sin | Critical | 1:4 | The false teachers redirect God’s grace (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং) into unrestrained moral indulgence (অনিয়ম চৎনবিরাক). Manipuri Vaishnavism’s well-developed bhakti concept of কৃপা (Krishna’s favor, responsive to a devotee’s devoted service) offers no ready category for grace twisted into license, since bhakti favor is tied to ongoing devotional performance rather than lawlessness. Must be taught as an explicit perversion, never a live alternative reading of grace. | Human theologian |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ (Master and Lord) | Critical | 1:4 | This verse applies both δεσπότης (স্বামী মপু, absolute ownership-authority) and κύριος (মপু ইবুংগো, supreme Lord) to Jesus Christ in a single clause; denying him (য়াদবা) is denying God himself. Must never use ঠাকুর, the devotional title strongly associated with Krishna in Manipuri Vaishnava practice, which would place Christ inside the existing bhakti-devotional framework as one object of devotion among others. | Human theologian |
| Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | Critical | 1:4 | ”Marked out beforehand for this condemnation” — the letter’s central polemic begins here. ৱায়েল (judgment) must convey a personal, judicial verdict from a holy God, not impersonal fate (ৱাইফম) or an automatic karmic mechanism, both live conceptual options in the region’s religious vocabulary. | Human theologian |
Section note: All content of 1:3-4 (the core passage’s opening) is mapped above; no clause is left unaddressed.
Section 3: Old Testament Warnings as Types — Israel, Angels, Sodom (Jude 1:5-7)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old Testament Warning as Type: Israel’s Wilderness Unbelief | High | 1:5 | Even a people already delivered (saved, অহানবা) by God can be destroyed through subsequent unbelief — a warning, not a statement about carelessly losing a settled prior salvation status. Requires explicit OT narrative background given generally low OT literacy among the target audience. Carries a textual-variant question (Jesus vs. “the Lord” as the one who saved and later judged Israel) directly bearing on the Deity and Lordship of Christ doctrine above; a human theologian must resolve the base-text reading before translation. | Human theologian |
| Old Testament Warning as Type: The Angels Who Abandoned Their Position | High | 1:6 | A genuinely new theological category for Manipuri Christian vocabulary. Angels (স্বর্গগী থাদোকপা) must be presented as created, morally accountable servants of the one true God, judged for abandoning their assigned position — sharply distinct from the Umang Lai forest/guardian deities honored at Lai Haraoba and from ancestral spirits (Apokpa) in Sanamahi cosmology, neither of which is a morally accountable creature under a single sovereign God. The generic Meitei word লাই (deity/god) must never be used for “angel.” Also introduces “eternal chains” (লোমহৌত্তবা য়ংবা), which overlaps with the Permanence of Eternal Judgment doctrine below. | Human theologian |
| Old Testament Warning as Type: Sodom and Gomorrah | High | 1:7 | Sodom and Gomorrah stand as a public, permanent example of judgment on persistent, flagrant sin. “Eternal fire” (লোমহৌত্তবা মেই) must convey permanent judicial punishment, not a purifying or cyclical fire, avoiding resonance with regional religious imagination involving purification through repeated cosmic cycles. | Human theologian |
| The Permanence of Eternal Judgment | High | 1:6, 1:7 (introduced here; continues at 1:13) | The repeated “eternal/forever” language describing the fallen angels’ chains and Sodom’s fire must be taught as permanent, non-cyclical judicial consequence, standing in explicit contrast to any framework (cyclical rebirth, repeated cosmic ages, purification through fire across lifetimes) in which suffering is temporary or repeatable. | Human theologian |
Section note: All three named OT “type” warnings (Israel, angels, Sodom) are fully covered; no verse in 1:5-7 is left unmapped.
Section 4: Denunciation of the False Teachers and Michael’s Restraint (Jude 1:8-10)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | Critical | 1:8, 1:10 | The dreamers “defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme (থেংনবা) the glorious ones (মতিক চাউবা, a distinct sense from the abstract ‘glory’ of 1:24-25 — flag this distinction in translator notes).” Blaspheme must convey grave irreverent insult, not casual insult. | Human theologian |
| Angelic Restraint and Proper Spiritual Authority (Michael and the Devil) | High | 1:9 | Michael’s restraint toward even the devil (শয়তান, leaving judgment to the Lord) directly contrasts the false teachers’ reckless blasphemy. The devil must be understood as a singular, personal, cosmic adversary of the one true God, distinct from the diffuse, morally ambiguous spirit-world of Sanamahi cosmology and from asura/demon figures within Vaishnava mythology. Michael’s title স্বর্গগী থাদোকপশিংগী মহৌসা (archangel) is built on the newly established “angel” term above. | Human theologian |
| Inspiration and Canonicity of Scripture (Non-Canonical Citation) | Critical | 1:9 | Jude 1:9 draws on Jewish tradition associated with the apocryphal Assumption of Moses. Must be explicitly taught as inspired apostolic use of known material, not an expansion of the biblical canon — requiring particular pastoral care given the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei puya manuscripts and the resulting cultural sensitivity around lost/destroyed sacred texts. | Human theologian |
| The Conduct and Character of False Teachers | Medium | 1:8, 1:10 | ”Grumblers,” reliance on instinct “like unreasoning animals,” self-corruption. Vivid, non-technical descriptive images; low ambiguity risk beyond natural Manipuri phrasing. | Native speaker review |
Section 5: Cain, Balaam, and Korah as Types of False Teachers (Jude 1:11)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cain, Balaam, and Korah as Types of False Teachers | High | 1:11 | Three named Old Testament figures typify the false teachers’ patterns: murderous jealousy (way of Cain), corrupting others for profit (error of Balaam), and rebellion against God-appointed authority (rebellion of Korah). Balaam’s profit-driven corruption directly parallels the false teachers’ own profit-motive named later (1:16); requires explicit OT narrative background given generally low OT literacy among the target audience. | Human theologian |
Section 6: Nature-Imagery Descriptions of the False Teachers (Jude 1:12-13)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Conduct and Character of False Teachers | Medium | 1:12-13 | ”Hidden reefs” at love feasts, “shepherding themselves,” waterless clouds, fruitless autumn trees, wild waves, “wandering stars.” “Wandering stars” in particular must be rendered plainly as metaphor, avoiding any phrasing suggesting astrological significance, fortune-telling, or star-reading power for Manipuri readers. | Native speaker review |
| Sanctified Love and Corrupted Fellowship (Love Feasts) | Medium | 1:12 | The false teachers corrupt the church’s own communal love-feasts, feasting shamelessly. Ties directly to নুংশিবা (love), which must be kept distinct from the romantically-coded devotional love (prem) associated with Radha-Krishna Ras Lila devotion. | Native speaker review |
| The Permanence of Eternal Judgment | High | 1:13 (“the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever”) | Reinforces the permanent, non-cyclical nature of reserved judgment introduced at 1:6-7; must not resonate with cyclical-cosmic-age frameworks. | Human theologian |
Section 7: Enoch’s Prophecy and the Coming Judgment (Jude 1:14-16)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inspiration and Canonicity of Scripture (Non-Canonical Citation) | Critical | 1:14-15 | Jude explicitly names and quotes 1 Enoch, a book outside the Protestant canon. Must be taught as inspired apostolic citation of known material, not a canonization of 1 Enoch itself — mishandling risks either an overclaim (treating 1 Enoch as Scripture) or an underclaim (doubting Jude’s own inspiration). Especially sensitive given the Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning memory. | Human theologian |
| The Coming Universal Judgment | High | 1:14-15 | Enoch’s prophecy describes a comprehensive future judgment exposing every ungodly deed and word (“the great day”). Must be taught as a personal, moral reckoning before the one true God, not an impersonal cosmic law of cause-and-effect resembling karma, nor a repeatable cycle of cosmic ages found in regional cosmological frameworks. | Human theologian |
| Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | Critical | 1:15, 1:16 | Fourfold repetition of “ungodly” (তেংবাং মপুবু ইকায়দবা) in 1:15 anchors the doctrine’s climax; 1:16 adds grumbling, malcontent, “loud-mouthed boasters,” and flattery “for advantage” (profit-motive echoing Balaam, 1:11). | Human theologian |
| The Conduct and Character of False Teachers | Medium | 1:16 | Grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires, bombastic words, flattering people for advantage. | Native speaker review |
Section 8: The Apostles’ Warning and the Spirit-less Scoffers (Jude 1:17-19)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Building Up One Another in the Faith | Low | 1:17 (“remember the predictions of the apostles”) | Believers are called to remember apostolic teaching as a stabilizing foundation. Standard vocabulary; minimal doctrinal ambiguity. Uses the TM-reused তবিদগী থাবিরকপা (apostle, Medium per baseline apostleship doctrine). | Automated review |
| The Conduct and Character of False Teachers | Medium | 1:18 (scoffers following their own ungodly passions) | নোৎপা মীওই (scoffers/mockers) continues the descriptive cluster of false-teacher imagery. | Native speaker review |
| The Absence of the Holy Spirit in False Teachers | High | 1:19 | The false teachers are described as worldly/natural (থাওয়াই অসেংবা য়াওদবা মীওই), causing divisions, “devoid of the Spirit.” Must be taught as the specific absence of God’s personal, indwelling, regenerating Holy Spirit — NOT a denial that these people possess a soul (থাওয়াই) in the generic sense every human is held to have in Sanamahi belief. Confusing these two senses of “spirit” would either falsely dehumanize the false teachers or wrongly soften Jude’s actual charge. | Human theologian |
Section 9: The Believers’ Positive Duty (Jude 1:20-21)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | Critical | 1:20 (“building yourselves up on your most holy faith”) | The “most holy faith” (অসেংবা থাজবা) is the same fixed, complete deposit named in 1:3, now the foundation for corporate edification, not an evolving or individually-attained bhakti-style spiritual achievement. | Human theologian |
| Building Up One Another in the Faith | Low | 1:20 (“praying in the Holy Spirit”) | The positive counterpart to the false teachers’ divisive conduct: believers build one another up through Spirit-empowered prayer. Standard vocabulary. | Automated review |
| Sanctified Love and Corrupted Fellowship (Love Feasts) | Medium | 1:21 (“keep yourselves in the love of God”) | নুংশিবা here names God’s own covenantal love as the sphere believers must actively remain within — distinct from the romantically-coded devotional love (prem) of Ras Lila devotion. | Native speaker review |
| Eternal Life as the Believer’s Hope | Critical | 1:21 (“waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life”) | Eternal life (লোমহৌত্তবা হিংবা) is unending, personal, relational life with the one true God through Christ’s finished historical work. Must not be conflated with মোক্ষ (Vaishnava liberation from the cycle of rebirth) or with a bhakti devotee’s hoped-for eternal absorption into or nearness to Krishna’s presence in Vaikuntha/Goloka — both live, specific aspirations within Manipuri Vaishnava devotional life, not distant abstractions. | Human theologian |
| Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | High | 1:21 (“waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ”) | ৱারৈশিনবা (mercy) as the hoped-for future consummation, continuing from the letter’s greeting (1:2) and anticipating the pastoral command of 1:22-23. Must not collapse into bhakti’s কৃপা. | Human theologian |
Section 10: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering (Jude 1:22-23)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | High | 1:22, 1:23 | Believers are commanded to actively rescue wavering, doubting (চিংনরিবা) fellow believers with urgent compassion (লৌথোকপা, “snatch”), while categorically distinguishing them from the unrepentant “ungodly” false teachers targeted for judgment elsewhere in the letter. The “defiled garment” (মশাদবা ফুরিত) metaphor is moral contamination, not literal ritual-garment purity, and must be contrasted explicitly with the ceremonial garment/body-purity preparations undertaken before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship. A significant manuscript-variant question affects how many distinct groups are addressed in 1:22-23 and what differentiated pastoral action is prescribed for each; this structural decision must be resolved by a human theologian working from an agreed base text before translation of this passage proceeds. | Human theologian |
Section 11: Doxology — Kept, Blameless, and God’s Preserving Power (Jude 1:24-25)
| Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (Jude) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kept by God and Presented Blameless | High | 1:1 (opening), 1:21 (command), 1:24 (closing) | Jude opens and closes with believers being kept/preserved (থাম্বা/থাম্রবা) by God’s own action, with an intervening command for believers to actively keep themselves in God’s love — a both-divine-and-human-responsibility structure. “Blameless” (মশাদাবা) must convey the completed result of God’s own sanctifying and keeping work, not a ritual purity-check achieved through human ascetic practice, devotional service, or the ceremonial garment/body purity preparations of Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship. | Human theologian |
| Assurance of Security through God’s Own Power | High | 1:24 | ”To him who is able (পাংগল লৈবা) to keep you from stumbling (ঙাক্তোকপা) and to present you blameless” grounds believers’ final security entirely in God’s own power, not in maintained ritual standing, ongoing devotional service, or bhakti performance. This directly extends the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine into Jude’s closing benediction. | Human theologian |
| Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | Critical | 1:25 | The closing doxology names the one true God, exclusively (“the only God,” মুয়ফম অমত্তা তেংবাং মপু), as Savior (অহানবিবা) specifically through Jesus Christ our Lord, ascribing to him glory (মতিক চাউবা — the abstract sense, distinct from 1:8’s “glorious ones”), majesty (চাউথোকপা), dominion/might (পাংগল), and authority (অধিকার) across all time. This climactic monotheistic, Christ-centered ascription must stand against both the populated Umang Lai/ancestral-spirit cosmology of Sanamahism and the multi-avatar devotional system of Manipuri Vaishnavism. “Savior” must not be confused with Krishna as a devotee’s personal saviour-liberator figure, and “dominion” must never use শক্তি, already forbidden in the baseline due to its maibi trance-power association. | Human theologian |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ (Master and Lord) | Critical | 1:25 (“through Jesus Christ our Lord”) | The doxology reinforces the deity/lordship claim of 1:4 by naming God as Savior specifically “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” binding the Father’s saving work inseparably to the Son’s mediating Lordship. | Human theologian |
Section note: All content of 1:24-25 (the doxology) is mapped above; no clause is left unaddressed.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Contending for the Faith Once Delivered
Manipuri name: অমুক্তা শিনবিখ্রবা থাজবগী মথক্তা কান্না হোৎনবা
Key terms: contend for the faith, once for all, delivered, the faith, most holy faith
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s purpose-statement doctrine: the faith is a fixed, complete, once-for-all deposit to be defended, not an evolving revelation. This must be taught against three live local frameworks that treat revelation/spiritual authority as ongoing or repeatable: Sanamahism’s continuing maibi trance-utterance during Lai Haraoba, Vaishnavism’s open avatar-descent sequence, and any reading that would treat ‘contending’ as bhakti-style devotional merit-accumulation (সেবা) rather than defense of a completed gift. The Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning memory makes ‘a preserved, complete deposit of faith’ a theologically and culturally weighty claim requiring careful, explicit teaching.
Inspiration and Canonicity of Scripture (Non-Canonical Citation)
Manipuri name: অসেংবা মপুং ৱারিগী থাওয়াই পীবা অমসুং পুয়া মপুং ফাবা
Key terms: prophesied, Enoch, Michael, Moses’ body, reviling accusation
Review routing: Human theologian
Jude 1:9 draws on Jewish tradition associated with the apocryphal Assumption of Moses, and 1:14-15 explicitly names and quotes 1 Enoch, a book outside the Protestant canon. This must be explicitly taught as inspired apostolic use of known material, not an expansion of the biblical canon — a distinction requiring particular pastoral care given the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei puya manuscripts and the resulting cultural sensitivity around lost/destroyed sacred texts. Mishandling this risks either an overclaim (treating 1 Enoch as Scripture) or an underclaim (doubting Jude’s own inspiration).
Grace Perverted into a License for Sin
Manipuri name: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাংবু অনিয়ম চৎনবিরাক্তা হোংদোকপা
Key terms: grace, licentiousness, sensuality, turning/perverting
Review routing: Human theologian
The false teachers redirect God’s grace into unrestrained moral indulgence. This is precisely the confusion the baseline’s Critical grace note warns against: Manipuri Vaishnavism’s well-developed bhakti concept of কৃপা (Krishna’s favor, understood as responsive to a devotee’s devoted service) offers no ready category for grace being twisted into license, since bhakti favor is tied to ongoing devotional performance, not license for lawlessness. Must be taught as an explicit perversion, not a live alternative reading of grace.
Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ (Master and Lord)
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী স্বামী মপু অমসুং মপু ইবুংগো ওইবা
Key terms: only Sovereign/Master, Lord, deny, Lord Jesus Christ, Savior
Review routing: Human theologian
Jude 1:4 applies both δεσπότης (absolute ownership-authority) and κύριος (supreme Lord) to Jesus Christ in a single clause; denying him is denying God himself. Must not use ঠাকুর, a devotional title strongly associated with Krishna in Manipuri Vaishnava practice, which would place Christ inside the existing bhakti-devotional framework as one object of devotion among others rather than above and outside it. The closing doxology (1:25) reinforces this by naming God as Savior specifically ‘through Jesus Christ our Lord.‘
Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুবু ইকায়দবা অস্লবা ওজাশিংগী মথক্তা ৱায়েল
Key terms: judgment, marked out beforehand, ungodly, sinners, blaspheme, denying
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s central polemic: God’s judicial verdict against a specific class of ungodly, unrepentant false teachers. ৱায়েল (judgment) must convey a personal, judicial verdict from a holy God, not impersonal fate (ৱাইফম, already rejected in the baseline for election/providence) or an automatic karmic mechanism, both of which are live conceptual options in the region’s religious vocabulary. Must also be kept sharply distinct from the compassionate treatment prescribed for the merely ‘wavering’ (1:22-23) — this is judgment on settled, unrepentant rebellion, not on doubt.
Eternal Life as the Believer’s Hope
Manipuri name: থাজবা মীওইশিংগী আশা ওইনা লোমহৌত্তবা হিংবা
Key terms: waiting for, mercy, eternal life
Review routing: Human theologian
The goal toward which mercy carries believers is eternal life — unending, personal, relational life with the one true God through Christ’s finished historical work. This must not be conflated with মোক্ষ (Vaishnava liberation from the cycle of rebirth) or with a bhakti devotee’s hoped-for eternal absorption into or nearness to Krishna’s presence in Vaikuntha/Goloka, both of which are live, specific aspirations within Manipuri Vaishnava devotional life, not distant abstractions.
Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Manipuri name: থাগৎচরি অমসুং তেংবাং মপুগী থাম্বিবগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা
Key terms: only God, Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, glory, majesty, dominion, authority, forever
Review routing: Human theologian
The closing doxology names the one true God, exclusively (‘the only God’), as Savior specifically through Jesus Christ our Lord, ascribing to him glory, majesty, dominion, and authority across all time. This climactic monotheistic and Christ-centered ascription must stand against both the populated Umang Lai/ancestral-spirit cosmology of Sanamahism and the multi-avatar devotional system of Manipuri Vaishnavism; ‘Savior’ must not be confused with Krishna as a devotee’s personal saviour-liberator figure, and ‘dominion’ (কৃতোস) must never use শক্তি, already forbidden in the baseline due to its maibi trance-power association.
High Risk Doctrines
The Coming Universal Judgment
Manipuri name: মীওই পুম্নমক্কী মথক্তা লকপা ৱায়েল
Key terms: judgment, convict/expose, harsh things, the great day
Review routing: Human theologian
Enoch’s prophecy (1:14-15) describes a comprehensive future judgment exposing every ungodly deed and word. Must be taught as a personal, moral reckoning before the one true God, not as an impersonal cosmic law of cause-and-effect resembling karma, nor as a repeatable cycle of cosmic ages found in some regional cosmological frameworks.
Old Testament Warning as Type: Israel’s Wilderness Unbelief
Manipuri name: ইস্রায়েলগী থাজবা য়াওদবগী মথৌ উৎপা
Key terms: saved, people, those who did not believe, destroyed
Review routing: Human theologian
Even a people already delivered by God can be destroyed through subsequent unbelief — a warning, not a statement about carelessly losing a settled prior salvation status. Requires explicit Old Testament narrative background teaching given generally low OT literacy among the target audience; also carries a textual-variant question (Jesus vs. ‘the Lord’ as the one who saved and later judged Israel) that a human theologian must resolve before translation, given its direct bearing on the deity_of_christ doctrine.
Old Testament Warning as Type: The Angels Who Abandoned Their Position
Manipuri name: মথক্তা লৈবা মফম থাদোকখিবা স্বর্গগী থাদোকপশিংগী মথৌ উৎপা
Key terms: angels, did not keep, position/domain, dwelling place, eternal chains, darkness
Review routing: Human theologian
This is a genuinely new theological category for Manipuri Christian vocabulary. Angels must be presented as created, morally accountable servants of the one true God who can be judged for abandoning their assigned role — sharply distinct from the Umang Lai forest/guardian deities honored at Lai Haraoba and from ancestral spirits (Apokpa) in Sanamahi cosmology, neither of which is a morally accountable creature under a single sovereign God. The generic Meitei word লাই (deity/god) must never be used for ‘angel.‘
Old Testament Warning as Type: Sodom and Gomorrah
Manipuri name: সোদোম অমসুং গোমোরাহগী মথৌ উৎপা
Key terms: Sodom and Gomorrah, sexual immorality, strange flesh, example, eternal fire
Review routing: Human theologian
Sodom and Gomorrah stand as a public, permanent example of judgment on persistent, flagrant sin. ‘Eternal fire’ must convey permanent judicial punishment, not a purifying or cyclical fire, avoiding any resonance with regional religious imagination involving purification through repeated cosmic cycles.
Cain, Balaam, and Korah as Types of False Teachers
Manipuri name: কয়িন, বালাম, কোরাগী লম্বীদা চৎলবা অস্লবা ওজাশিং
Key terms: way of Cain, error of Balaam, for hire, rebellion of Korah, perished
Review routing: Human theologian
Three named Old Testament figures typify the false teachers’ patterns: murderous jealousy, corrupting others for profit, and rebellion against God-appointed authority. Balaam’s profit-driven corruption directly parallels the false teachers’ own profit-motive named later in the letter (1:16); requires explicit OT narrative background given generally low OT literacy among the target audience.
Angelic Restraint and Proper Spiritual Authority (Michael and the Devil)
Manipuri name: মিখায়েলগী থাজদবা অমসুং মপুং ফাবা থাওয়াইগী মথৌ
Key terms: Michael, archangel, devil, disputing, reviling accusation, rebuke
Review routing: Human theologian
Michael’s restraint toward even the devil (leaving judgment to the Lord) directly contrasts the false teachers’ reckless blasphemy of glorious beings (1:8, 10). The devil must be understood as a singular, personal, cosmic adversary of the one true God, distinct from the diffuse, morally ambiguous spirit-world of Sanamahi cosmology and from asura/demon figures within Vaishnava mythology, which operate within a different narrative-cosmological framework.
The Absence of the Holy Spirit in False Teachers
Manipuri name: অস্লবা ওজাশিংদা থাওয়াই অসেংবা লৈতবা
Key terms: worldly/natural, not having the Spirit, causing divisions
Review routing: Human theologian
The false teachers are described as lacking the Holy Spirit — this must be taught as the specific absence of God’s personal, indwelling, regenerating Spirit, not as a denial that these people possess a soul (থাওয়াই) in the generic sense every human is held to have in Sanamahi belief. Confusing these two senses of ‘spirit’ would either falsely dehumanize the false teachers or wrongly soften Jude’s actual charge against them.
Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Manipuri name: চিংনরিবা মীওইশিংদা ৱারৈশিনবা অমসুং কান্বিবা
Key terms: mercy, wavering/doubting, snatch, save, defiled garment, fear
Review routing: Human theologian
Believers are commanded to actively rescue wavering, doubting fellow believers with urgent compassion, while categorically distinguishing them from the unrepentant ‘ungodly’ false teachers targeted for judgment elsewhere in the letter. ৱারৈশিনবা (mercy) must not collapse into bhakti’s কৃপা. A significant manuscript-variant question affects how many distinct groups are addressed in 1:22-23 and what differentiated pastoral action is prescribed for each; this structural decision must be resolved by a human theologian working from an agreed base text before translation of this passage proceeds.
Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুনা থাম্বিবা অমসুং মশাদাবা ওইনা লেপহনবা
Key terms: kept, keep yourselves, guard from stumbling, blameless, present
Review routing: Human theologian
Jude opens (1:1) and closes (1:24) with the theme of believers being kept/preserved by God’s own action, with an intervening command (1:21) for believers to actively keep themselves in God’s love — a both-divine-and-human-responsibility structure. ‘Blameless’ must convey the completed result of God’s own sanctifying and keeping work, not a ritual purity-check achieved through human ascetic practice, devotional service, or the ceremonial garment/body purity preparations undertaken before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship.
Assurance of Security through God’s Own Power
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবগী মখাদা লৈবা থাজবগী চেকশিন
Key terms: able to keep, guard from stumbling, present blameless, with great joy
Review routing: Human theologian
The doxology’s opening clause (‘to him who is able to keep you from stumbling’) grounds believers’ final security entirely in God’s own power, not in maintained ritual standing, ongoing devotional service, or bhakti performance. This directly extends the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine into Jude’s closing benediction.
The Permanence of Eternal Judgment
Manipuri name: লোমহৌত্তবা ৱায়েলগী চাংতববা
Key terms: eternal chains, eternal fire, blackness of darkness forever
Review routing: Human theologian
The repeated ‘eternal/forever’ language describing the fallen angels’ chains, Sodom’s fire, and the false teachers’ reserved darkness must be taught as permanent, non-cyclical judicial consequence. This stands in explicit contrast to any framework (cyclical rebirth, repeated cosmic ages, purification through fire across lifetimes) in which suffering or darkness is temporary or repeatable.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Servant Identity and Devotion to Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী লান্মী ওইনা খংনবা
Key terms: servant/slave, brother
Review routing: Native speaker review
Jude identifies himself by total devotion/ownership to Christ rather than by personal status or family prestige. লান্মী also names the historical Meitei institution of war-captive forced servitude to nobility; teaching must clarify that Jude’s self-designation describes willing, honored devotion to an absolute Master, not that historical social-caste institution.
Sanctified Love and Corrupted Fellowship (Love Feasts)
Manipuri name: অসেংবা নুংশিবা অমসুং মশাহল্লবা লোইনবা
Key terms: love, love feasts, hidden reefs, shepherding themselves
Review routing: Native speaker review
The false teachers corrupt the church’s own communal love-feasts, feasting shamelessly and shepherding only themselves. নুংশিবা (love/agape) must be kept distinct from the romantically-coded devotional love (prem) associated with Radha-Krishna Ras Lila devotion, which functions as a real cultural point of comparison for Meitei audiences.
The Conduct and Character of False Teachers
Manipuri name: অস্লবা ওজাশিংগী চৎনবিরাক অমসুং মশাক
Key terms: grumblers, malcontents, lusts, bombastic words, flattering people, scoffers, dreaming
Review routing: Native speaker review
A cluster of vivid, non-technical descriptive images (grumbling, self-serving flattery, empty boastful speech, waterless clouds, fruitless trees, wild waves, wandering stars) characterizes the false teachers’ emptiness and instability. ‘Wandering stars’ in particular must be rendered plainly as metaphor, avoiding any phrasing suggesting astrological significance, fortune-telling, or star-reading power for Manipuri readers.
Low Risk Doctrines
Building Up One Another in the Faith
Manipuri name: থাজবগী মথক্তা হৌদোকহনবা
Key terms: build up, praying in the Holy Spirit, remember the apostles’ words
Review routing: Automated review
The positive counterpart to the false teachers’ divisive conduct: believers build one another up on the foundation of the most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit and remembering apostolic teaching. Standard vocabulary; minimal doctrinal ambiguity risk.
