Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Colossians (English → Manipuri)
Purpose
This document provides the complete, full-book doctrine matrix for the Colossians curriculum, required by Phase 1 Step 4. It covers every chapter of Colossians from first to last, section by section, and is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same doctrine set, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing. No doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision in this document contradicts the registry. Where a section of the book carries forward doctrines already fully documented for an earlier passage without introducing new translation risk, that section is marked [Reviewed — no new doctrinal load] rather than silently omitted, per the full-book coverage mandate.
The core passage, Colossians 1:15-20 (the “Christ Hymn”), is the theological anchor of the curriculum and carries the single highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the book, but every chapter of Colossians is analyzed below.
Risk tier definitions (unchanged from the Romans baseline and the Colossians registry):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Chapter 1
1:1-2 — Salutation
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grace | 1:2 | Critical | ”Grace and peace” opens the letter; মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং must resist collapse into bhakti’s responsive কৃপা from the very first verse readers encounter. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood (Corporate Identity of Believers) | 1:2 | High | ”Saints and faithful brothers” is corporate, addressed to the whole Colossian church; must not be narrowed to a Vaishnava renunciant class (গোসাঞি) or a ritual-specialist role. | Human theologian |
| Faith | 1:2 (implied “faithful”) | High | Object of faith (Christ) must remain recoverable even in the compressed salutation form. | Human theologian |
Apostleship (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা) recurs here at Medium risk per baseline; no new translation issue beyond the established Romans rendering.
1:3-8 — Thanksgiving and Report of the Colossians’ Faith
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gospel | 1:5, 1:6, 1:8 | High | ”Word of truth, the gospel” must be distinguished from festive announcements tied to the Vaishnava devotional calendar (e.g., Ras Lila performances); it names the unique proclamation fulfilled in the supreme Christ of 1:15-20. | Human theologian |
| Faith | 1:4 | High | ”Faith in Christ Jesus” — object must be explicit, distinguished from ভক্তি devotional practice. | Human theologian |
| Love as the Bond of Christian Unity | 1:4, 1:8 | High | ”Love… in the Spirit” is early evidence of agapē’s distinct, non-romantic, community-binding character; must not evoke bhakti’s prema (Radha-Krishna romantic devotion). | Human theologian |
| Hope Grounded in Christ | 1:5 | Medium | ”Hope laid up in heaven” is a certain future grounded in promise, not ৱাইফম-style fate or a devotee’s cultivated hope of nearness to Krishna. | Native speaker review |
| Mission and Proclamation | 1:6 | Medium | ”Bearing fruit and increasing… in the whole world” frames gospel spread as organic and Christ’s own initiative, not a foreign or ethnically-coded project, given regional sensitivity around historic mission work. | Native speaker review |
| Thanksgiving | 1:3 | Low | Standard term; minor over-ritualization risk only. | Automated review |
| Prayer and Intercession | 1:3 | Medium | Direct address to God the Father in Christ’s name; distinguish from petitions carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi/maiba. | Native speaker review |
1:9-14 — Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom and the Kingdom Transfer
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ | 1:9 | Medium | ”Spiritual wisdom and understanding” must be distinguished from maiba/maibi ritual knowledge and Vaishnava jnana-marga scriptural wisdom, without denigrating reasoned inquiry generally. | Native speaker review |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 1:14 | High | ”Redemption, the forgiveness of sins” is a completed, costly deliverance, not an ongoing ritual-cleansing category as in Vaishnava prāyaścitta or Lai Haraoba purification. | Human theologian |
| The Son’s Kingdom versus the Domain of Darkness | 1:13 | High | ”Delivered us… transferred us” is a moral/relational realm-transfer; must be distinguished from the Sanamahi Ashiba (light-from-void) cosmogonic narrative and from the historic Meitei kingship’s Pakhangba-descent political framing. | Human theologian |
| Adoption and Inheritance of the Saints | 1:12 | High | ”Inheritance of the saints in light” requires explicit teaching of full inheritance-rights sense, since formal adoption is not settled in traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) kinship, where inheritance runs through birth lineage. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood | 1:12 | High | ”Qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints” — corporate, not specialist-class, standing. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | 1:13 (“his beloved Son”) | Critical | First occurrence of “Son” in the letter; must be read as eternal, unique Sonship, not one avatar among Vishnu’s recognized avatars nor a rank-ordered divine sibling as in the Sanamahi Sanamahi/Pakhangba elder-brother framework. | Human theologian |
1:15-20 — The Christ Hymn (CORE PASSAGE — Theological Anchor)
This is the single highest-density concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the entire curriculum and the seedbed for most of Colossians’ new glossary terms (see 08_core_glossary.md Part B1).
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deity of Christ | 1:15, 1:17, 1:19 | Critical | ”Image of the invisible God” must not be softened into a great avatar or a purnavatara-framework reading; মূর্তি (temple image) is explicitly forbidden as a rendering of “image.” | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | 1:15 | Critical | ”Image of God” continues 1:13’s Son language; eternal Sonship, never rank-ordered sibling-of-Sanamahi framing. | Human theologian |
| Preeminence and Firstborn Rank of Christ | 1:15, 1:17, 1:18 | Critical | THE single highest-stakes collision point in the book: πρωτότοκος (“firstborn of all creation”) must be taught as supreme rank and universal inheritance-right as Creator, never birth-sequence, given Meitei kinship custom’s real weight on birth order among sons and Sanamahism’s live “which sibling came first” category (Sanamahi as elder brother of Pakhangba). Must always be read together with “before all things” (1:17) to block any Arian-adjacent “first created being” misreading. | Human theologian |
| Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation | 1:15-17, 1:20 | Critical | ”All things were created through him and for him… in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible” is a direct, competing cosmological claim against Sanamahi cosmogony (Atiya Guru Sidaba, Sanamahi, Pakhangba, Leimarel Sidabi as origin-agents). Must be taught as substantive, not softened into generic “God made everything.” | Human theologian |
| Christ’s Creation and Triumph over Cosmic Powers | 1:16 | Critical | ”Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” directly names the populated hierarchy category filled in both living traditions (Umang Lai deities in Sanamahism; ranked devas in Vaishnavism); শক্তি (maibi trance-power term) is forbidden. Christ created and is supreme over every such power. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18 | High | ”Head of the body, the church” carries both ruling-authority and life-giving-source senses; the church-body must be distinguished from the clan-body (yumnak) and from royal-body/Pakhangba symbolism. | Human theologian |
| Providence: Christ Sustains All Things | 1:17 | High | ”In him all things hold together” is Christ’s personal, ongoing, relational sustaining care, never an impersonal cosmic law (ৱাইফম-style fate is forbidden). | Human theologian |
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19 | Critical | ”All the fullness of God was pleased to dwell in him” is the highest-density Vaishnavism collision point in the book: without explicit contrast teaching against purnavatara (“complete avatar,” Krishna’s specific Gaudiya Vaishnava title), this verse risks being heard as merely confirming Jesus as one more “complete” avatar in an existing graded framework rather than the unique, exclusive, permanent embodiment of the entire Godhead, once. পূর্ণ/purna is forbidden as a primary gloss. | Human theologian |
| Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20 | Critical | ”To reconcile to himself all things, making peace by the blood of his cross” is a completed, historical, once-for-all act; must be sharply distinguished from Vaishnava prāyaścitta, Lai Haraoba purification rites, and bhakti’s ongoing devotional-service framework, none of which name a single completed reconciling event. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ (baseline, extended) | 1:18 (“firstborn from the dead”) | Critical | Reuses the Romans baseline সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা; must never be rendered with পুনর্জন্ম-adjacent language, and “firstborn from the dead” must be read with the same rank-not-sequence caution as 1:15. | Human theologian |
1:21-23 — Reconciliation Applied to the Readers
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:21-22 | Critical | ”You, who once were alienated… he has now reconciled” applies 1:20’s completed historical act personally to the reader; must retain the once-for-all, non-repeatable character established above. | Human theologian |
| Sanctification and Holy Living | 1:22 | High | ”To present you holy and blameless” is the Spirit’s ongoing transformative work, not periodic ritual purification before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship. | Human theologian |
| Faith | 1:23 | High | ”If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast” — perseverance in trust in Christ specifically, not generalized piety. | Human theologian |
| Gospel | 1:23 | High | ”Hope of the gospel… proclaimed in all creation under heaven” — universal proclamation claim; retain without qualification. | Human theologian |
| Mission and Proclamation | 1:23 | Medium | Universal gospel-reach language; frame as the church’s calling, consistent with 1:6. | Native speaker review |
1:24-29 — Paul’s Ministry and the Mystery of Christ
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:26-27 | High | ”Mystery hidden for ages… now revealed to his saints” must be taught in explicit contrast to esoteric secret-knowledge frameworks (maiba/maibi initiation; Vaishnava guru-lineage transmission); the gospel mystery is public and universal, not privileged hidden knowledge. | Human theologian |
| Hope Grounded in Christ | 1:27 | Medium | ”Christ in you, the hope of glory” — certain future hope grounded in Christ’s indwelling presence, not fatalistic destiny or devotional nearness-cultivation. | Native speaker review |
| Church as God’s People | 1:24 | Medium | ”Body of Christ” reintroduces the church-body concept from 1:18 in a suffering/ministry context. | Native speaker review |
| Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ | 1:28 | Medium | ”Teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ” — Christ alone as the exhaustive source of wisdom, not maiba/maibi ritual knowledge or Vaishnava jnana-marga. | Native speaker review |
| Mutual Edification | 1:28 | Low | ”Warning everyone and teaching everyone” — encouragement/admonition pairing, low doctrinal risk. | Automated review |
| Power of God (baseline) | 1:29 | High | ”Struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me” reuses তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা; must remain distinct from শক্তি (maibi trance-power). | Human theologian |
Chapter 2
2:1-5 — Paul’s Struggle for the Church’s Steadfastness
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 2:2 | High | ”Mystery of God, namely Christ” — the mystery is a person, not a hidden doctrine reserved for initiates. | Human theologian |
| Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ | 2:3 | Medium | ”In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” — total sufficiency claim; Christ, not any rival teaching, is the source. | Native speaker review |
| Faith | 2:5 | High | ”The stability of your faith in Christ” — object must remain explicit. | Human theologian |
2:6-8 — Walk in Christ; Warning against Philosophy
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | Critical | ”Philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition” names specific rival teaching; must be taught with pastoral sensitivity as Christ’s sufficiency, not a decontextualized attack on either living tradition’s current practice. | Human theologian |
| Freedom from the Elemental Spirits of the World | 2:8 | Critical | ”Elemental spirits of the world” (στοιχεῖα) directly names the populated-spirit-world category filled by Umang Lai/Apokpa spirits in Sanamahi practice; requires explicit contrast teaching. | Human theologian |
| Church as God’s People / Union with Christ (contextual) | 2:6-7 | High/Critical | ”As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him… built up in him” anticipates 2:9-15’s union-with-Christ argument. | Human theologian |
2:9-15 — Fullness of Deity, Union with Christ, the Cross’s Victory
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 2:9 | Critical | ”In him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” pairs মপুংফাবা (fullness) with “bodily” (তেংবাং মপু ওইবগী মপুংফাবা + hakchang-based bodily qualifier) to explicitly exclude any temporary or repeatable avatara-style embodiment reading — the paired term to 1:19, restated with maximal explicitness. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church (extended: “head of all rule and authority”) | 2:10 | High | ”You have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” links headship over the church to headship over cosmic powers. | Human theologian |
| Christ’s Creation and Triumph over Cosmic Powers | 2:10, 2:15 | Critical | ”Head of all rule and authority… disarmed the rulers and authorities… triumphing over them” — not abstract angelology for a Meitei audience; Christ has publicly and decisively triumphed over every hostile power, which are not to be feared, appeased, or venerated in parallel with Christ. Must be read as one continuous argument with 1:16. | Human theologian |
| Baptism as Union with Christ | 2:11-12 | Critical | ”Buried with him in baptism… circumcised with a circumcision made without hands” — baptism (বাপ্তিস্মা) is a genuinely new Critical-risk term for this Language Package; must be distinguished from Vaishnava ritual bathing (snana) and Lai Haraoba ceremonial washing. | Human theologian |
| Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | 2:12 | Critical | ”Raised with him through faith” — identification with Christ’s one historical death/resurrection; must never suggest পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation). | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 2:13-14 | High | ”Having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt” — completed, costly deliverance via a legal-debt metaphor (ফাওজেল লাইরিক), distinct from ongoing ritual-cleansing categories. | Human theologian |
| Reconciliation through the Cross (extended) | 2:14 | Critical | ”Nailed it to the cross” — historical particularity of the cross must be preserved against abstraction into a timeless symbol. | Human theologian |
2:16-19 — Warning against Ritual Regulations and Worship of Intermediaries
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:16, 2:18 | Critical | ”Let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival… let no one disqualify you” — the warning addresses functional equivalents (ritual calendars, festival observance) that remain live in both traditions; requires pastoral, non-triumphalist framing. | Human theologian |
| Warning against Worship of Created Intermediaries | 2:18 | High | ”Worship of angels” must be explicitly distinguished from ongoing veneration of Umang Lai forest deities, Apokpa ancestral spirits, or lesser Vaishnava deities/demigods — directly relevant to current practice, not first-century curiosity. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | 2:19 | High | ”Not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body… grows” — losing connection to Christ as Head is the diagnosed error behind the false teaching. | Human theologian |
2:20-23 — Freedom from Elemental Spirits; Self-Made Religion
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freedom from the Elemental Spirits of the World | 2:20 | Critical | ”If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why… submit to regulations” — repeats and intensifies 2:8’s claim; believers are freed from bondage to any such spiritual forces. | Human theologian |
| Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | 2:20 | Critical | ”If with Christ you died” — died-with-Christ language must retain the once-for-all historical-identification sense, not a cyclical death/rebirth reading. | Human theologian |
| Self-Made Religion and False Asceticism | 2:20-23 | High | ”Self-made religion and asceticism… severe treatment of the body… have an appearance of wisdom” requires sensitive framing given genuine ascetic renunciant practice among some Manipuri Vaishnava devotees (গোসাঞি) and local fasting/austerity observance; must be distinguished from the positive use of the same humility virtue at 3:12. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3
3:1-4 — Raised with Christ; Seek the Things Above
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | 3:1, 3:3 | Critical | ”If then you have been raised with Christ… your life is hidden with Christ in God” — the chapter’s pivotal identity claim; must never suggest পুনর্জন্ম. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ (baseline) | 3:1 | Critical | ”Raised with Christ” presupposes Christ’s own bodily resurrection (established at 1:18); consistency of সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা required. | Human theologian |
| Hope Grounded in Christ | 3:4 | Medium | ”When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” — future hope tied to Christ’s own appearing, not fatalistic destiny. | Native speaker review |
3:5-11 — Put Off the Old Self; Idolatry; No Distinction in Christ
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:5, 3:9 | High | ”Put to death therefore what is earthly in you… you have put off the old self” — the same continuing person’s former condition decisively left behind; must never suggest reincarnation. | Human theologian |
| Idolatry (Covetousness as Idolatry) | 3:5 | Critical | ”Covetousness, which is idolatry” directly names image/murti veneration, a live, prestigious, central feature of both Manipuri Vaishnava temple devotion and Umang Lai worship; Paul’s actual argument is that covetousness itself functions as rival devotion, requiring mandatory theologian sign-off so the text’s claim lands without reading as a decontextualized attack on neighbors’ religious practice. | Human theologian |
| The Wrath of God | 3:6 | High | ”On account of these the wrath of God is coming” — a personal, righteous, judicial category, decisively addressed at the cross (1:20); must not be heard as an appeasable Umang Lai or Vaishnava deity’s manageable displeasure. | Human theologian |
| Sanctification and Holy Living | 3:8-9 | High | ”Put away… put off the old self with its practices” continues the sanctification trajectory from 1:22. | Human theologian |
| Unity of Peoples in Christ (baseline framework, extended) | 3:11 | Medium | ”Greek and Jew… barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all” — retain unqualified universality; teach with theological clarity rather than mapping directly onto Manipur’s contemporary inter-community relations. | Native speaker review |
3:12-17 — Put On the New Self; Love, Peace, Thanksgiving
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:10, 3:12 | High | ”Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator” deliberately echoes Christ as the true image of God (1:15); progressive renewal, not repeated cyclical rebirth. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood | 3:12 | High | ”God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved” — corporate identity marker, reused from 1:2/1:12/1:26. | Human theologian |
| Love as the Bond of Christian Unity | 3:14 | High | ”Put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” — the chapter’s climactic ethical term; must remain categorically distinct from bhakti’s prema romantic-devotional paradigm. | Human theologian |
| Divine Calling | 3:15 | High | ”The peace of Christ… to which indeed you were called in one body” — God’s sovereign summons to peace, not a maibi’s ritual seizure by an Umang Lai deity nor ৱাইফম-style fate. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | 3:15 | High | ”In one body” reuses the body-of-Christ concept established at 1:18. | Human theologian |
| Thanksgiving | 3:15, 3:17 | Low | ”Be thankful… giving thanks to God the Father through him” — standard term, low risk. | Automated review |
| Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ | 3:16 | Medium | ”Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom” — Christ’s word as the source of communal wisdom. | Native speaker review |
| Mutual Edification | 3:16 | Low | ”Teaching and admonishing one another”; distinct nuance from encourage (থাওয়াই পীবা) vs. admonish (চেকসিন্নবা), but low doctrinal risk. | Automated review |
| Church as God’s People (worship practice) | 3:16 | Medium | ”Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” — neutral descriptive term (ঈশ্বরদা শক্তক পীবগী ইশৈ) preferred over কীর্তন/ভজন, genre terms tied to Krishna-devotional performance. | Native speaker review |
3:18-4:1 — Household Codes
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household Codes | 3:18-19, 3:20-21, 3:22-4:1 | High | ”Wives submit… husbands love”; “children obey… fathers do not provoke”; “bondservants obey… masters treat justly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven” — all duties are reciprocal, asymmetrical, and bounded by Christlike love and final accountability to Christ, never a warrant for domination; the slave/master pairing is especially sensitive given Manipur’s own historical lallup corvée-labor system and hill-valley social stratification, and must be taught as an ancient-institution ethic reoriented around Christ’s lordship, not mapped onto contemporary inter-community labor relations. | Human theologian |
| Love as the Bond of Christian Unity | 3:19 | High | ”Husbands, love your wives” — same agapē term as 3:14, applied within the household; must not collapse into bhakti’s prema. | Human theologian |
| Lordship of Christ (baseline) | 3:18 (“fitting in the Lord”), 4:1 (“Master in heaven”) | Critical | Reuses মপু ইবুংগো; the household codes are explicitly grounded in Christ’s supreme, exclusive Lordship over both master and slave alike. | Human theologian |
Chapter 4
4:2-6 — Prayer, Mission, and Wisdom toward Outsiders
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prayer and Intercession | 4:2-3, 4:12 | Medium | ”Continue steadfastly in prayer… praying also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word” — direct access to God in Christ’s name, distinguished from petitions carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi/maiba. | Native speaker review |
| Mission and Proclamation | 4:3-6 | Medium | ”Open door for the word… wisdom toward outsiders… let your speech always be gracious” — frame evangelism and the “open door” request as the church’s own calling, not a foreign or ethnically-coded project, given historical mission-work associations. | Native speaker review |
| Mystery of Christ Revealed | 4:3 | High | ”To declare the mystery of Christ” — repeats 1:26-27/2:2’s public, non-esoteric mystery. | Human theologian |
| Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ | 4:5 | Medium | ”Walk in wisdom toward outsiders” — practical wisdom in Christian conduct toward those outside the church, including neighbors within both living religious traditions. | Native speaker review |
4:7-18 — Personal Greetings and Closing
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Church as God’s People | 4:15-16 | Medium | ”Church in her house… read also the letter from Laodicea” — “church in the house” must be clarified as a gathered assembly, not a household shrine, since Sanamahi domestic religion maintains a household shrine to Sanamahi kept in a fixed corner of a Meitei home, creating real risk of assimilation to that existing household-religion category if left unclarified. | Native speaker review |
| Christian Fellowship (baseline, conceptual) | 4:7-14 | Low | Extended personal-greeting section names numerous co-workers; conveys shared participation in gospel ministry, not merely social or clan (yumnak) association. | Automated review |
| Grace | 4:18 | Critical | Closing benediction “Grace be with you” reuses মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং; consistency with the letter’s opening (1:2) required as a bookend. | Human theologian |
[Reviewed — no new doctrinal load beyond the above]: The remainder of 4:7-18 (specific personal names and travel/commendation details for Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus) introduces no new theological terms or doctrines beyond fellowship, mission, and church-as-gathered-assembly already documented above, and has been reviewed accordingly.

This document must be read alongside analysis/08_core_glossary.md (term-level detail) and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (canonical risk tiers and routing) before any Phase 2 translation of Colossians begins. Full-book coverage confirmed: every verse-range from 1:1 through 4:18 has been analyzed or explicitly marked as reviewed with no new doctrinal load.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Grace
Manipuri name: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং
Key terms: grace, unmerited, grace and peace
Review routing: Human theologian
Unmerited favor must be distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s কৃপা (Krishna’s favor, typically understood as responsive to a devotee’s devoted service), a live and well-developed devotional framework, not a distant abstraction.
Deity of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী তেংবাং মপু ওইবা
Key terms: image of the invisible God, before all things, fullness of God, fullness of deity bodily
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Christ’s full, co-equal divine nature must not be softened into ‘a great avatar’ among Vishnu’s recognized avatar sequence, nor read through the purnavatara (‘complete avatar,’ applied to Krishna as svayam bhagavan) framework central to Manipuri Vaishnavism, nor as a specially favored spirit within the Umang Lai pantheon.
Sonship of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী মচানুপা ওইবা
Key terms: his beloved Son, image of God, Son of his love
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: eternal, unique Sonship, not one avatar among Vishnu’s many recognized avatars as understood within Manipuri Vaishnavism, and not a rank-ordered divine sibling as in Sanamahi’s Sanamahi/Pakhangba elder-brother framework.
Preeminence and Firstborn Rank of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী মমাংগী মচানুপা ওইবা অমসুং পুম্নমক্তগী মথৌ চাংবা
Key terms: firstborn of all creation, firstborn from the dead, preeminent, before all things
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: this is the single highest-stakes doctrinal collision point in the book. Sanamahi tradition already holds a live ‘which divine sibling came first’ category (Sanamahi as elder brother of Pakhangba), and Meitei kinship custom weighs real inheritance/authority on birth order among sons. πρωτότοκος must be taught as supreme rank and universal inheritance-right as Creator, not birth-sequence, and must always be read together with ‘before all things’ (1:17) to block any Arian-adjacent ‘Christ as first created being’ misreading.
The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Manipuri name: শেমবা পুম্নমক্তগী মথক্তা ক্রিস্তোগী মথৌ চাংবা
Key terms: all things were created through him and for him, all creation, thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: this is a direct, competing cosmological and authority claim against Sanamahi cosmogony (Atiya Guru Sidaba, Sanamahi, Pakhangba, Leimarel Sidabi as origin-agents) and against the populated hierarchies of Umang Lai deities and Vaishnava devas that both living traditions maintain. Christ alone is the sole originating agent, sustaining cause, and rightful owner of the entire created order, including every rank of spiritual power; this must be taught as a substantive claim, never softened into generic ‘God made everything’ language.
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোদা তেংবাং মপুগী মপুংফাবা হক্চাংগী ওইনা লৈবা
Key terms: all the fullness of God, fullness of deity bodily, pleased to dwell
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: highest-density collision point in the entire book with Manipuri Vaishnavism. Gaudiya Vaishnavism titles Krishna specifically as svayam bhagavan/purnavatara, the ‘full/complete’ descent, in explicit contrast to ‘partial’ avatars celebrated through the Ras Lila tradition. Without direct, explicit contrast teaching, ‘fullness of God dwells in Christ’ risks being heard as merely confirming Jesus is one more ‘complete’ avatar within that existing graded framework, rather than the unique, exclusive, permanent embodiment of the entire Godhead in one eternal Son, once, not a repeatable divine descent.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Manipuri name: ক্রুসকী মফমদা ইনগবা ওইহনবা
Key terms: reconcile to himself all things, making peace by the blood of his cross, once alienated, now reconciled
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Christ’s cross-work is a completed, historical, once-for-all act resolving the hostility between God and a rebellious creation and sinful humanity. Must be sharply distinguished from the atonement/purification rituals (prāyaścitta) of Vaishnava practice, the purification rites undertaken before Lai Haraoba to maintain right relationship with the Umang Lai, and the bhakti framework in which nearness to Krishna is cultivated through ongoing devotional service — none of which name a single, completed, historical reconciling event.
Christ’s Creation and Triumph over Cosmic Powers
Manipuri name: পাংথোক্পা মপুশিং অমসুং থাওয়াইশিংগী মথক্তা ক্রিস্তোগী মথৌ চাংবা
Key terms: thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, disarmed the rulers and authorities, triumphing over them
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: not an abstract angelology point for a Meitei audience. Both living traditions maintain populated hierarchies of intermediary spiritual beings receiving ongoing ritual attention — Sanamahism’s Umang Lai forest/guardian deities (honored via Lai Haraoba maibi trance) and, in the Vaishnava system, ranked hierarchies of devas/demigods under Vishnu. Christ made every such power and has publicly, decisively triumphed over the hostile ones; they are not to be feared, appeased, or venerated in parallel with Christ. Must be taught as one continuous argument spanning 1:16 and 2:15.
Freedom from the Elemental Spirits of the World
Manipuri name: মালেমগী থাওয়াইশিংদগী নিংথংবা
Key terms: elemental spirits of the world, philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: directly names the exact populated category Sanamahi practice already fills with real, specific nature-spirits and ancestral spirits (Umang Lai, Apokpa), which continue to receive active ritual attention today. Christ has freed believers from bondage to any and all cosmic/elemental spiritual forces; this must be taught with explicit contrast, not left as an abstract ‘elements’ concept.
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Manipuri name: লৌশিং অরানবা অমসুং লাইনিং মরুপ্পা লৈতবগী চেকসিন্নবা
Key terms: philosophy, human tradition, elemental spirits, let no one disqualify you, let no one deceive you with plausible arguments
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: this warning is not addressed to a historical, defeated rival but to specific teachings whose functional equivalents (populated spirit-hierarchies, ascetic religious observance, ritual calendars, image veneration) remain live and actively practiced within both Sanamahism and Manipuri Vaishnavism today. Must be taught with pastoral sensitivity as Christ’s sufficiency, not framed as a decontextualized attack on either community’s current religious practice.
Idolatry (Covetousness as Idolatry)
Manipuri name: মূর্তি থাবা-চাংবা (হাংথিবা)
Key terms: covetousness, which is idolatry, put to death… idolatry
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: directly names image/murti veneration, a live, prestigious, and central feature of Manipuri Vaishnava temple devotion and Umang Lai sacred-grove worship. Paul’s specific argument is that covetousness itself functions as a rival devotion, not primarily a blanket denunciation of any community’s worship practice; requires mandatory theologian sign-off on pastoral framing so the text’s actual claim lands without landing as a decontextualized attack on neighbors’ religious practice in the current Manipur interfaith climate, while never softening the text’s own claim.
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগা লোয়ননা সিবা অমসুং হিংজত-লকপা
Key terms: buried with him, raised with him, raised with Christ, your life is hidden with Christ in God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: believers’ new identity and security are located in spiritual identification with Christ’s one historical death and resurrection, never in a repeatable death-rebirth cycle. Must never be rendered in any way that could suggest পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), the concept absorbed into Meitei religious discourse through Vaishnavization.
Baptism as Union with Christ
Manipuri name: বাপ্তিস্মাদা ক্রিস্তোগা লোয়ননবা
Key terms: buried with him in baptism, circumcised with a circumcision made without hands
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: baptism is a genuinely new Critical-risk term for this Language Package (not present in the Romans baseline registry). Must be distinguished from ritual bathing/purification (snana) in sacred waters within Vaishnava practice and from Lai Haraoba ceremonial washing; baptism signifies a completed, once-for-all union with Christ’s historical death/resurrection, not repeatable ritual purification.
High Risk Doctrines
Gospel
Manipuri name: নুংঙাইবগী পাউ
Key terms: gospel, word of truth, hope of the gospel
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be distinguished from festive announcements associated with the Vaishnava devotional calendar (e.g. Ras Lila performances); the gospel is the unique proclamation of God’s saving work accomplished in the crucified and risen, supreme Christ of the Christ Hymn (1:15-20).
Divine Calling
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী কৌবা
Key terms: called, calling, peace… called in one body
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign summons to peace in one body must be distinguished from a maibi being ritually seized/called by an Umang Lai deity during Lai Haraoba trance, and from ৱাইফম-style impersonal fate.
Faith
Manipuri name: থাজবা
Key terms: faith, faith in Christ Jesus, rooted… in the faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Personal trust in Christ; the object of faith must always be named, distinguished from ভক্তি (bhakti), the specific devotional-love practice central to Manipuri Vaishnavism.
Love as the Bond of Christian Unity
Manipuri name: নুংশিবা - অমাগা অমাগা পুন্না থামবগী শীজিন্নবা
Key terms: love, bond of perfection, love which binds everything together
Review routing: Human theologian
Self-giving, unifying, covenantal community-love among believers must be sharply distinguished from bhakti’s prema, the romantic/erotic divine love between Radha and Krishna celebrated as the devotional ideal of the Ras Lila tradition; agapē is categorically different from that romantic-devotional paradigm.
Sanctification and Holy Living
Manipuri name: অসেংবা ওইহনবা
Key terms: holy, holy and blameless, put on… holy and beloved
Review routing: Human theologian
The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy must not be confused with ritual purification before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship, which are periodic ritual states rather than ongoing, whole-life transformation.
Sainthood (Corporate Identity of Believers)
Manipuri name: অসেংবা মীওইশিংগী কৌবা
Key terms: saints, holy ones, faithful brothers
Review routing: Human theologian
All believers are saints corporately; must not be narrowed to a Vaishnava renunciant-devotee class (গোসাঞি) or a specialist ritual role paralleling the maibi/maiba.
Adoption and Inheritance of the Saints
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী ইমুংদা মচা ওইনা লৌবা অমসুং লৌথোকপা
Key terms: inheritance of the saints, in light, qualified you
Review routing: Human theologian
Full inheritance-rights sense must be explicitly taught, since formal legal adoption is not a settled category in traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) kinship structure, where inheritance runs through birth lineage.
Christ as Head of the Church
Manipuri name: কলিসিয়াগী কোক ওইনা ক্রিস্তো
Key terms: head of the body, the church, head, body
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ is both the church’s ruling authority and its life-giving source, as a head governs and animates a body; the church-body must be distinguished from the clan-body (yumnak), the primary Meitei corporate-identity category, and from royal-body symbolism tied to the Pakhangba-descent tradition of Meitei kingship.
Providence: Christ Sustains All Things
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী থৌরাং - ক্রিস্তোনা পুম্নমক্তবু থাম্লি
Key terms: in him all things hold together, before all things
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s personal, ongoing sustaining of the universe must never be rendered in a way heard as an impersonal cosmic law/principle (echoing the baseline’s forbidden ৱাইফম-style fate framing); this is personal, relational sustaining care by Christ himself.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Manipuri name: মথৌ পীদুনা থাদোকপা অমসুং পাপকী ময়ামদা কোকপা
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness of sins
Review routing: Human theologian
Deliverance secured by Christ’s own costly work, distinct from but complementary to reconciliation; must not be treated as a stand-alone ritual-cleansing concept as in Vaishnava prāyaścitta or Lai Haraoba purification, which require ongoing ritual maintenance rather than naming a completed, once-for-all deliverance.
Warning against Worship of Created Intermediaries
Manipuri name: স্বর্গদূত অমসুং অতোপ্পা শেমবা থাওয়াইশিংগী থাবা-চাংবাদগী চেকসিন্নবা
Key terms: worship of angels, insisting on asceticism
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be explicitly distinguished from ongoing veneration of Umang Lai forest deities, Apokpa ancestral spirits, or lesser Vaishnava deities/demigods; the warning is directly relevant to both living traditions’ actual current practice, not a historical curiosity confined to first-century Colossae.
Self-Made Religion and False Asceticism
Manipuri name: মশাগী থৌদাংনা শেমলবা লাইনিং-চাংবাগী চেকসিন্নবা
Key terms: self-made religion, severe treatment of the body, have an appearance of wisdom
Review routing: Human theologian
Condemns human-invented ascetic rules as lacking real power to restrain the flesh, and as substitutes for Christ’s sufficiency; requires explicit, sensitive theological framing given genuine ascetic renunciant practice among some Manipuri Vaishnava devotees (গোসাঞি) and fasting/austerity observance in local devotional life, and must be distinguished from the positive use of the same underlying humility virtue at 3:12.
The Wrath of God
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী অকাংবা
Key terms: wrath of God is coming, on account of these
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s settled, judicial opposition to sin, decisively addressed at the cross (1:20), must be distinguished from an appeasable Umang Lai deity’s displeasure managed through maibi/maiba-mediated ritual, or a Vaishnava deity’s displeasure requiring ritual remedy; this is a personal, righteous, judicial category, not a recurring force to be managed.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী লোৎলবা থৌরাং ফোংদোকপা
Key terms: mystery hidden for ages, now revealed to his saints, mystery of God, namely Christ, open door
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s plan, Christ himself for all peoples, was hidden through past ages and is now openly proclaimed to all; must be taught in explicit contrast to any esoteric secret-knowledge framework held by ritual specialists (maiba/maibi initiation, or Vaishnava guru-lineage transmission), since the gospel mystery is a public, universal announcement, not privileged hidden knowledge.
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Manipuri name: হানবা মীওই হুন্দোকপা অমসুং অনৌবা মীওই সেৎপা
Key terms: put off the old self, put on the new self, renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator
Review routing: Human theologian
The same continuing person’s former moral-spiritual condition is decisively left behind and progressively renewed through union with Christ; must never be rendered in a way suggesting reincarnation/rebirth (পুনর্জন্ম remains forbidden throughout, per the baseline’s resurrection rule, extended here to this related identity-transformation language). The renewal ‘in the image of its Creator’ deliberately echoes Christ as the true image of God (1:15).
Household Codes
Manipuri name: য়ুমগী মীওইশিংগী থৌদাং - ক্রিস্তোগী মিংদা
Key terms: wives submit / husbands love, children obey / fathers do not provoke, bondservants obey / masters treat justly
Review routing: Human theologian
All household duties are reciprocal, asymmetrical, and bounded by Christlike love and final accountability to Christ (‘you have a Master in heaven’), never a warrant for domination. The slave/master pairing is especially sensitive given Manipur’s own historical lallup corvée-labor system and hill-valley social stratification; must be taught as an ancient-institution ethic reoriented around Christ’s lordship, not mapped onto contemporary Manipur inter-community labor relations.
The Son’s Kingdom versus the Domain of Darkness
Manipuri name: মচানুপাগী লৈপাক অমসুং অমাগী পাংথোক্পাগী মরাক্তা
Key terms: domain of darkness, kingdom of his beloved Son, transferred
Review routing: Human theologian
Conversion is a transfer between two competing moral/relational realms of authority; must be distinguished from the Sanamahi cosmogonic light-emerging-from-void (Ashiba) narrative, since this is a moral/relational realm-transfer, not a cosmogonic light-event, and from the historic Meitei kingship’s own royal-divine-lineage political framing (descent from Pakhangba).
Medium Risk Doctrines
Hope Grounded in Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোদা য়ুমফম ওইবা ৱাশাক্না
Key terms: hope, hope laid up in heaven, Christ in you, the hope of glory
Review routing: Native speaker review
Certain future expectation grounded in God’s promise, not ৱাইফম (impersonal fate) and not a devotee’s cultivated hope of nearness to Krishna.
Wisdom and Knowledge Concentrated in Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোদা লৈরিবা লৌশিং অমসুং খংবা
Key terms: treasures of wisdom and knowledge, full knowledge of his will, mature/complete in Christ
Review routing: Native speaker review
Christ, not any rival teaching, is the sole exhaustive source of wisdom; must be distinguished from maiba/maibi ritual knowledge and from Vaishnava jnana-marga scriptural wisdom traditions, without denigrating reasoned inquiry or education generally.
Church as God’s People
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী মীওইশিং ওইনা কলিসিয়া
Key terms: church, body of Christ, church in her house
Review routing: Native speaker review
The new covenant community, gathered in homes as at 4:15, must be clarified as a gathered assembly of believers, not a household shrine; Sanamahi domestic religion maintains a household shrine to Sanamahi kept in a fixed corner of a Meitei home, creating a real risk of the ‘church in the house’ language being assimilated to that existing household-religion category if left unclarified.
Prayer and Intercession
Manipuri name: হায়জবা অমসুং মখোয়গী মফমদা হায়জবা
Key terms: prayer, intercession, continue steadfastly in prayer, struggling in prayer
Review routing: Native speaker review
Direct access to God in Christ’s name; distinguish from petitions traditionally carried to the Umang Lai through a maibi or maiba on a community’s behalf.
Mission and Proclamation
Manipuri name: পাউ সন্দোকপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: open door for the word, wisdom toward outsiders, redeem the time, gospel… in the whole world
Review routing: Native speaker review
Given the historical association of Christian mission work with colonial-era administration and, more recently, sensitive inter-community relations within Manipur, frame evangelism and Paul’s prayer request for an ‘open door’ as the church’s own calling, not a foreign or ethnically-coded project.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Manipuri name: থাগৎচরি
Key terms: thanksgiving, give thanks, singing… with thankfulness
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term. Minor risk of over-ritualization; no significant syncretism risk.
Mutual Edification
Manipuri name: অমাগা অমাগা হৌদোকহনবা
Key terms: teaching and admonishing, build up, warn
Review routing: Automated review
Building one another up in faith through both encouragement and corrective admonition; distinguish nuance between exhort/encourage and admonish/warn, but low doctrinal risk.
