Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 Peter | English → Manipuri
Purpose
This document is the full-book doctrine matrix for 1 Peter (chapters 1–5), produced under PRD Phase 1 Step 4. It is fully consistent with, and introduces no doctrine, risk tier, or review-routing decision that contradicts, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (v1). Every doctrine below carries the identical name, risk tier, and review routing recorded in that registry. This document adds the supporting-passage detail and the specific, grounded translation-risk reasoning required for Phase 1 Step 4, and confirms FULL-BOOK COVERAGE: every chapter of 1 Peter is traced below, with every doctrine’s chapter of first/main occurrence and every subsequent chapter it reappears in explicitly noted. No chapter is silently omitted.
This analysis extends, and must never contradict, the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json. Where a 1 Peter doctrine reuses a Romans-established term (e.g. grace, faith, righteousness, holy, resurrection, sin, glory, calling), the baseline rendering and baseline risk reasoning are carried forward unchanged; this document records only what is new or extended for 1 Peter.
Manipuri’s comparative-religion landscape remains, as in the baseline, a live dual system: Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai forest deities honored through Lai Haraoba and its maibi trance-priestesses — currently undergoing active revival) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion expressed through the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila dance tradition — the majority religious identity of most Meitei Hindus today). 1 Peter introduces new collision categories beyond Romans: shepherd/cowherd (Govinda) imagery, priesthood-as-caste-office imagery, idol/idolatry language, romantic-devotional love (prema) imagery, and — most acutely — the actively populated Sanamahi spirit-world intersecting directly with 3:18–22’s “spirits in prison.”

Doctrine Matrix
Risk tiers, doctrine names, and review routing below are IDENTICAL to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json. This table adds book-wide supporting-passage mapping and the specific grounded translation-risk reasoning for each doctrine.
| # | Doctrine | Primary Supporting Passages (1 Peter) | Risk Tier | Translation Risk (grounded reason) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:3-9 (core passage); 1:21; 3:21 | Critical | ”Living hope” (হিংবা আশা) must be kept distinct from generic optimism and from a devotee’s hoped-for eventual absorption into or nearness to Krishna’s presence, a real Vaishnava eschatological aspiration. Resurrection must use সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা only; পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), a term Meitei religious vocabulary absorbed through 18th-century Vaishnavization, is forbidden. This hope rests on one historical, non-repeating event, not a cyclical process. | Human theologian |
| 2 | New Birth (Regeneration) | 1:3; 1:23 | Critical | Highest-collision doctrine in the book. অনৌবা মপোকপা must never be rendered with, or allowed to suggest, পুনর্জন্ম. New birth is a single, non-repeatable divine act of origin — the theological opposite of a cyclical rebirth doctrine live within Manipuri Vaishnavism. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Inheritance and Future Reward | 1:4; 5:4 | High | The secured future inheritance must carry full legal/relational inheritance-rights force, since Meitei clan (yumnak) inheritance customarily runs through birth lineage, not a granted/adoptive status; and “crown of glory” (মতিক চাউবগী লুচিং) must be distinguished from the historic Meitei royal regalia associated with the Pakhangba-lineage kingship tradition, lest the reward be read as an earthly royal honor. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Divine Calling and Election | 1:1-2; 1:15; 1:20; 2:9; 5:10 | High | God’s sovereign, personal choice (তেংবাং মপুগী খনখিবা / কৌখিবা) must never be rendered with ৱাইফম (impersonal fate). The “elect exiles/sojourners” identity of 1:1 requires particular sensitivity: it is a theological, heavenly-citizenship identity, not a claim about ethnic displacement, given Manipur’s own live memory of community displacement and inter-community tension. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 1:6-7; 2:19-20; 3:14-17; 4:12-19 | Critical | One of the letter’s two central practical doctrines. ৱাকৎপা (suffering) must never be read as karmic consequence for prior wrongdoing, a live category within the Vaishnava moral universe, nor as impersonal fate (ৱাইফম) to be passively borne. 2:19-20’s linking of unjust suffering to grace requires careful handling: God favors/approves the endurance of unjust suffering; suffering itself does not accrue bhakti-style devotional merit. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 1:18-19; 2:24; 3:18 | Critical | The “in our place, bearing our guilt” substitutionary sense must be explicit and never softened into mere exemplary suffering. থাদোকখিবা (ransomed) must not collapse into generic liberation language resonant with মোক্ষ. মমল চাউবা ঈ (precious blood) and অমুক্তমক্তা (once-for-all) must be taught against, and distinguished from, repeatable ritual-sacrifice patterns (Vaishnava puja offerings; Umang Lai animal offerings at Lai Haraoba), from which Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice is categorically different. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Christ’s Suffering as an Example for Believers | 2:21-23 | High | Must be held together with, never instead of, the substitutionary sense of 2:24. Rendering 2:21-23 in a way that lets the exemplary reading absorb or replace the substitutionary reading of the immediately following verse would flatten a doctrine 1 Peter deliberately teaches in two simultaneous registers. | Human theologian |
| 8 | The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:4-10 (core anchor) | Critical | This doctrine’s core vocabulary risks being heard through Manipuri Vaishnavism’s actual caste-linked Brahmin পুরোহিত temple-priest office, wrongly narrowing “priesthood” to a hereditary specialist class rather than every believer. “Spiritual sacrifices” risks being heard as literal offerings presented to the Umang Lai at Lai Haraoba or at a Vaishnava shrine. পুরোহিত and any ঠাকুর-linked vocabulary are forbidden; the sacrifice taught must be explicitly praise and righteous living offered by every believer. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Holy Nation and Chosen People Identity | 2:9-12 | High | ”Chosen race/lineage” (খনখিবা ইমুং-লোল) resonates with, but must be carefully distinguished from, Meitei clan/yumnak lineage identity — the same class of risk the Romans baseline flags for “seed of David.” The church’s corporate identity here is theological/covenantal, not an ethnic-lineage or clan claim. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | 2:13-25 | High | One of the two doctrines requiring the most careful curricular framing. Submission (ইনবা) must be taught as voluntary, gospel-motivated, Christ-imitating conduct offered for God’s glory — never passive fatalism, never endorsement of unjust structures — with particular sensitivity given Manipur’s complex historical relationship to governing authority (colonial-era administration; contemporary inter-community and state tensions). The household-servant/master unit (2:18-25) additionally requires the মপু (generic master) / মপু ইবুংগো (exclusive Lord) disambiguation to prevent a Christ-diminishing conflation. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Household Ethics and Marriage | 3:1-7 | High | ”Weaker vessel” (হেনগৎলবা ফু, 3:7) is culturally sensitive and must always be taught in the same breath as “joint heirs of the grace of life” (লৌনবা লোয়ননা ফংগদবা), establishing full spiritual equality of husband and wife; vulnerability language must never be rendered or taught as spiritual inferiority. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Holiness in Conduct | 1:14-16; 2:11-12; 3:1-6, 15-16 | High | চৎনবিরাক (conduct) must be distinguished from ritual-observance calendars (Lai Haraoba preparatory ritual, Vaishnava temple conduct codes) — this is whole-of-life moral conduct flowing from new birth, not periodic ritual behavior. “Fear” (কিবা) must be reverential awe before a personal Father-Judge, never ritual dread of offending the Umang Lai or Krishna. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22) | 3:18-22 (core anchor) | Critical | The single most collision-prone passage in the book for a Manipuri audience. Sanamahi religious practice maintains an actively populated spirit-world (ancestral Apokpa spirits, Umang Lai nature-deities) with which the living maintain ongoing ritual relationship through a maiba/maibi. “Spirits in prison” (শাজেলদা থমখিবা থাওয়াইশিং) must be taught as categorically distinct from, and explicitly not continuous with, these indigenous categories; it is anchored to one specific past historical disobedience (Noah’s generation) and must never be preached in a way validating ongoing communication with, or ritual access to, a populated spirit-world. Christ’s total, final subjection of every spiritual power (3:22) is the textual safeguard against this misreading and must always be retained. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Baptism | 3:20-21 | High | Baptism’s immediate qualifying clause — “not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience” — is doctrinally essential and must never be omitted or abbreviated in translation, since ritual water-purification (Lai Haraoba preparatory washing; Vaishnava ritual bathing) is a live cultural category that could otherwise silently absorb baptism’s meaning into mere physical/ritual cleansing. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Elders and Humility | 5:1-5 (core anchor) | High | কলিসিয়াগী অহলশিং (church elders) positively resonates with existing Meitei respect for অহল (elders) but must be explicitly taught as a recognized spiritual OFFICE, distinct from village-council eldership (lup) or age-based social seniority alone. Humility (নিংতম্বা ওইবা) must be distinguished from ascetic renunciant self-abasement (vairagya) practiced in Vaishnava devotional life; this is relational, other-serving lowliness, not a devotional achievement or merit-building practice. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Christ as Shepherd and Overseer of Souls | 2:25; 5:2-4 | Critical | The highest-collision Christological image in the book: Krishna is venerated throughout Manipuri Vaishnavism specifically AS a cowherd (Govinda/Gopala), the devotional center of the beloved, UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila tradition. Teaching “shepherd” for both Christ (Chief Shepherd) and human elders (under-shepherds) without an explicit distinguishing note risks absorption into existing Govinda devotional imagination. Sheep vocabulary (য়াও) must be used deliberately, never cattle-herding/Govinda-adjacent terms; the image is guardianship of souls, not romantic devotional play. Mandatory distinguishing note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Spiritual Warfare and the Devil | 5:8-9 | Critical | The devil must be taught as a distinct, singular, personal, malicious being opposed to God — categorically unlike the revered Umang Lai guardian deities or ancestral Apokpa spirits of Sanamahi belief, and unlike any figure within Vaishnava cosmology. লাই-root vocabulary (which would wrongly cast a revered guardian-deity category as evil) and bare থাওয়াই are both forbidden here. Resistance is through steadfast trust in God, never ritual appeasement or counter-magic. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Grace and Mercy | 1:2-3, 10, 13; 2:19-20; 3:7; 4:10; 5:5, 10, 12 | Critical | Unmerited favor (grace) must be distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s কৃপা, Krishna’s favor as understood to be responsive to a devotee’s devoted service — a live, well-developed devotional framework, not a distant abstraction. 1 Peter’s distinctive application of grace to unjust suffering itself (2:19-20) requires special handling: suffering is favored/approved by God, not a merit-earning act. Mercy (থমোইদা তাবা চানবি) answers misery; grace answers demerit; neither term may collapse into bhakti-responsive কৃপা. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Judgment and the Household of God | 4:5-6, 17 | High | This refining, purposive divine judgment upon God’s own household (a warning and a comfort together) must be distinguished from impersonal karmic retribution. The disputed “gospel preached to the dead” clause (4:6) shares 3:19’s collision risk and must not be taught as offering an ongoing post-mortem evangelistic opportunity absorbable into an ancestor-spirit-intercession framework parallel to Sanamahi practice. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Providence and the Faithful Creator | 4:19; 5:6-7 | Medium | God’s personal, purposive care as a reliable Maker must never be rendered with ৱাইফম (impersonal fate), consistent with the Romans baseline’s providence caution; confidence in God’s care is meant to free believers from anxious self-reliance, not to induce fatalistic resignation. | Native speaker review |
| 21 | Love and Christian Fellowship | 1:8, 22; 2:17; 3:8; 4:8-9; 5:14 | High | ”Loving Christ though unseen” (1:8) is a genuinely live collision point: the Ras Lila tradition centers on passionate, publicly performed, UNESCO-recognized romantic-devotional love (prema) between Krishna and Radha/the gopis. This must be taught as covenantal, whole-person devotion to a supreme, exclusive Lord — never assimilated into the Radha-Krishna romantic-bhakti pattern. 4:13’s “fellowship in Christ’s sufferings” extends the baseline fellowship term (লোইনবা) with a new nuance requiring explicit teaching. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Idolatry and the Former Way of Life | 1:14, 18; 4:3-4 | Critical | Genuinely sensitive: this New Testament category of worship offered to a manufactured object/image must be taught via the biblical text’s own historical Gentile referents (household gods and temple cults of Roman Asia Minor), never by directly naming or disparaging currently-practiced Umang Lai veneration or Vaishnava mūrti devotion. Curriculum materials should let the text’s own argument carry the point, trusting pastoral wisdom for any local application. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Sanctification | 1:2, 15-16; 2:5, 9 | High | The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy must be distinguished from ritual purification before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship; অসেংবা conveys moral purity and set-apartness, never merely physical/ritual cleanliness (which is reserved for শেংবা per the Romans baseline). | Human theologian |
| 24 | Inspiration and Preservation of Scripture (the Living Word) | 1:10-12; 1:23-25 | High | Continues the Romans baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine. Given the historical burning of indigenous Meitei puya manuscripts in the 1729 Puya Meithaba, this doctrine of Scripture as imperishable, divinely-preserved seed of new birth carries particular positive resonance in Manipuri and should be taught with sensitivity to that cultural memory of lost sacred texts, not merely as an abstract doctrine of textual reliability. | Human theologian |

Note on the Eight Curriculum-Designated Doctrines
The curriculum_parameters for this book designate eight doctrines for special emphasis. Each maps directly onto a matrix entry above:
| Curriculum-designated doctrine | Matrix # |
|---|---|
| The Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1 |
| Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 5 |
| The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood | 8 |
| Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | 10 |
| Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 6 |
| Holiness in Conduct | 12 |
| Elders and Humility | 15 |
| Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22) | 13 |
All eight are Critical or High risk, all eight route to human theologian review, and all eight are additionally supported in this matrix by the surrounding doctrines (New Birth, Inheritance, Divine Calling, Christ’s Exemplary Suffering, Holy Nation identity, Household Ethics, Baptism, Shepherd Christology, Spiritual Warfare, Grace and Mercy, Judgment, Providence, Love and Fellowship, Idolatry, Sanctification, Scripture) that this full-book coverage mandate requires be tracked alongside them, since 1 Peter’s doctrines are densely interwoven chapter to chapter rather than confined to isolated proof-texts.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Manipuri name: হিংবা আশাগী সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা
Key terms: living hope, resurrection, born again, inheritance, guarded
Review routing: Human theologian
The core passage’s central doctrine. ‘Living hope’ must be distinguished from generic optimism and from any eschatological hope framed as devotional absorption into Krishna’s presence (মোক্ষ-adjacent). ‘Resurrection’ must never be rendered সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা’s forbidden alternative পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), a category absorbed into Meitei religious vocabulary through Vaishnavization. This hope is grounded in a single historical event, not a cyclical process.
New Birth (Regeneration)
Manipuri name: অনৌবা মপোকপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: born again, new birth, imperishable seed, living word
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL — the highest-collision doctrine in the book for Manipuri. অনৌবা মপোকপা (new birth) must never be rendered with or suggest পুনর্জন্ম, the cyclical-rebirth vocabulary Manipuri Vaishnavism has absorbed. New birth is a single, non-repeatable spiritual origin caused by God, the theological opposite of a rebirth cycle. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence.
Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Manipuri name: অচুম্বগীদমক্তা ৱাকৎপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: suffer for righteousness, trial, fiery trial, suffering, grieved
Review routing: Human theologian
One of the letter’s two central practical doctrines. ৱাকৎপা (suffering) must never be read as karmic consequence for prior wrongdoing — a live category in the Vaishnava moral universe — nor as impersonal fate (ৱাইফম) to be passively endured. 2:19-20’s linking of unjust suffering to grace (চার্িস) must be carefully taught: enduring unjust suffering is itself favored by God, not that suffering earns merit, a distinction crucial against any bhakti-devotional-merit reading.
Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোনা মহাক্কী মথন্তা ৱাকৎপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: bore our sins, precious blood, ransomed, righteous for unrighteous, once for all, lamb
Review routing: Human theologian
The substitutionary ‘in our place, carrying our guilt’ sense (2:24, 3:18) must be explicit and never softened into mere exemplary suffering. থাদোকখিবা (ransomed) must not collapse into generic liberation (মোক্ষ-adjacent); মমল চাউবা ঈ (precious blood) and অমুক্তমক্তা (once-for-all) must be taught against the backdrop of repeatable ritual sacrifice patterns (Vaishnava puja, Umang Lai animal offerings) from which Christ’s sacrifice is categorically distinct.
The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Manipuri name: কলিসিয়া অসেংবা অমসুং নিংথৌগী থৌজালগী মীওই ওইবা
Key terms: holy priesthood, royal priesthood, spiritual sacrifices, spiritual house, living stone
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL — this doctrine’s core vocabulary risks being heard through Manipuri Vaishnavism’s actual, caste-linked Brahmin পুরোহিত temple-priest office, wrongly narrowing priesthood to a specialist class. ‘Spiritual sacrifices’ risks being heard as literal offerings given to the Umang Lai at Lai Haraoba or presented at a Vaishnava shrine. Must be explicitly taught: EVERY believer mediates and offers; the sacrifice is praise and righteous living. NEVER use পুরোহিত or ঠাকুর-linked vocabulary.
Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোনা থাওয়াইশিংদা ফোংদোকপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: spirits in prison, proclaimed, disobedient in Noah’s day, baptism, angels and powers subjected
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL — the single most collision-prone passage in 1 Peter for a Manipuri audience. Sanamahi religious practice maintains an actively populated spirit-world (ancestral Apokpa spirits, Umang Lai nature-deities) with which the living maintain ongoing ritual relationship through a maiba/maibi. ‘Spirits in prison’ must be taught as a category entirely distinct from, and explicitly NOT continuous with, these indigenous categories, anchored to a specific past historical disobedience (Noah’s generation), and must never be preached in a way that could validate ongoing communication with, or ritual access to, a populated spirit-world. Christ’s total, final subjection of all spiritual powers (3:22) is the doctrinal safeguard against any such misreading. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Christ as Shepherd and Overseer of Souls
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তো য়াও ইংবা মীওই ওইবগী থৌদাং
Key terms: shepherd and overseer of souls, chief shepherd, flock of God, straying sheep
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL — the highest-collision Christological image in the whole book: Krishna is venerated throughout Manipuri Vaishnavism specifically AS a cowherd (Govinda/Gopala), the very center of the beloved, UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila devotional dance tradition. Teaching ‘shepherd’ imagery for both Christ (Chief Shepherd) and human elders (under-shepherds) without explicit distinguishing instruction risks absorption into existing Govinda devotional imagination rather than being understood on its own biblical (sheep, not cattle; guardianship of souls, not romantic devotional play) terms. Deliberately use sheep (য়াও) vocabulary, never cattle-herding/Govinda-adjacent terms. Mandatory distinguishing teaching note at every occurrence.
Spiritual Warfare and the Devil
Manipuri name: য়েক্লবা লান্মীগী মখাদা থাজবনা খাংথোকপগী থৌদাং
Key terms: adversary, devil, roaring lion, resist, firm in faith
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL — the devil must be taught as a distinct, singular, personal, malicious being opposed to God, categorically unlike the revered Umang Lai guardian deities or ancestral Apokpa spirits of Sanamahi belief, and unlike any figure within Vaishnava cosmology. Deliberately avoids লাই-root vocabulary (which would wrongly cast a revered guardian-deity category as evil) and bare থাওয়াই. Resistance is through steadfast trust in God, never ritual appeasement or counter-magic.
Grace and Mercy
Manipuri name: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং অমসুং থমোইদা তাবা চানবি
Key terms: grace, mercy, this is a gracious thing, God of all grace
Review routing: Human theologian
Unmerited favor (grace) must be distinguished from Vaishnava bhakti’s কৃপা (Krishna’s favor, responsive to a devotee’s devoted service). 1 Peter’s unique application of grace to unjust suffering itself (2:19-20) requires special care: suffering is favored/approved by God, not that it earns merit. Mercy answers misery; grace answers demerit; neither should collapse into bhakti-responsive কৃপা.
Idolatry and the Former Way of Life
Manipuri name: সেমখ্রবা লাইবু থাগৎপা অমসুং হানগী মহিং য়াওদবা হিংগৎ
Key terms: idolatry, sensuality, former ignorance, futile ways inherited from your forefathers
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL and genuinely sensitive: this NT category of worship offered to a manufactured object/image must be taught via the biblical text’s own historical Gentile referents (household gods, temple cults of Asia Minor), never by directly naming or disparaging currently-practiced Umang Lai veneration or Vaishnava mūrti devotion; curriculum materials should let the text’s own argument carry the point, trusting pastoral wisdom for any application.
High Risk Doctrines
Inheritance and Future Reward
Manipuri name: মচাগী ফংগদবা অমসুং মতিক চাউবগী লুচিং
Key terms: inheritance, imperishable, undefiled, unfading, crown of glory
Review routing: Human theologian
The believer’s secured future possession must be taught with full legal/relational inheritance-rights force, since Meitei clan (yumnak) inheritance runs through birth lineage, not adoption; and লুচিং (crown) must be distinguished from the historic Meitei royal regalia tied to the Pakhangba-lineage kingship tradition.
Divine Calling and Election
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী খনখিবা অমসুং কৌখিবা
Key terms: elect exiles, foreknowledge, election, called, chosen race
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign, personal choice must never be rendered as ৱাইফম (impersonal fate). The sojourner-identity language of 1:1 additionally requires sensitivity: it must be taught as a theological identity (heavenly citizenship, not ethnic displacement), given Manipur’s own live memory of community displacement and inter-community tension.
Christ’s Suffering as an Example for Believers
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী ৱাকৎপা মৱোং ওইনা লৌবা
Key terms: example, pattern, follow in his steps, committed no sin
Review routing: Human theologian
Held together with, not instead of, the substitutionary sense (2:24); translation must not let the exemplary reading absorb or replace the substitutionary one, since 1 Peter teaches both simultaneously.
Holy Nation and Chosen People Identity
Manipuri name: খনখিবা ইমুং-লোল অমসুং অসেংবা ফুরুপ ওইবা
Key terms: chosen race, holy nation, people for possession, gentiles
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Chosen race/lineage’ language resonates with (but must be carefully distinguished from) Meitei clan/yumnak lineage identity, similar to the Romans baseline’s ‘seed of David’ caution; the church’s corporate identity is theological, not an ethnic-lineage claim.
Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Manipuri name: ঈশ্বরগী মতুংইননা ইনবা অমসুং ক্রিস্তোগুম্না খাংথোকপা
Key terms: submit, king, governors, servants, endurance, suffer unjustly
Review routing: Human theologian
One of the two curriculum doctrines requiring the most careful framing: submission must be taught as voluntary, gospel-motivated, Christ-imitating conduct freely offered for God’s glory, never as passive fatalism, never as endorsement of unjust structures, with particular sensitivity given Manipur’s complex historical relationship with governing authority (colonial-era administration and contemporary inter-community/state tensions). The household-servant/master submission unit (2:18-25) additionally requires the মপু / মপু ইবুংগো disambiguation note.
Household Ethics and Marriage
Manipuri name: য়ুম্বোন্মগী চৎনবিরাক অমসুং লুহোংবা
Key terms: wives submit, weaker vessel, joint heirs, gentle and quiet spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Weaker vessel’ (3:7) is culturally sensitive and must always be taught alongside ‘joint heirs of the grace of life’ in the same verse, establishing full spiritual equality; vulnerability language must never be taught as spiritual inferiority, per the Gender Language Handling rule.
Holiness in Conduct
Manipuri name: চৎনবিরাকতা অসেংবা ওইবা
Key terms: conduct, holy, be holy for I am holy, fear, gentle and quiet spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
চৎনবিরাক (conduct/behavior) must be distinguished from ritual observance calendars (Lai Haraoba preparation, Vaishnava temple conduct codes); this is whole-of-life moral conduct flowing from new birth, not periodic ritual behavior. ‘Fear’ must be reverential awe of a personal Father-Judge, not ritual dread of offending the Umang Lai or Krishna.
Baptism
Manipuri name: বাপ্তিস্মাগী থৌদাং
Key terms: baptism, ark, saved through water, good conscience, not removal of dirt but an appeal
Review routing: Human theologian
Baptism’s own immediate qualifying clause (‘not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience’) is doctrinally essential and must never be omitted, since ritual water-purification (Lai Haraoba preparatory washing, Vaishnava ritual bathing) is a live cultural category that could otherwise absorb baptism’s meaning into mere physical/ritual cleansing.
Elders and Humility
Manipuri name: কলিসিয়াগী অহলশিং অমসুং নিংতম্বা ওইবগী থৌদাং
Key terms: elders, shepherd the flock, overseer, not domineering, clothe yourselves with humility
Review routing: Human theologian
The direct textual anchor for this doctrine. কলিসিয়াগী অহলশিং positively resonates with existing Meitei respect for অহল (elders) but must be explicitly taught as a recognized spiritual OFFICE, distinct from village-council eldership (lup) or age-based social seniority alone. Humility (নিংতম্বা ওইবা) must be distinguished from ascetic renunciant self-abasement (vairagya) practiced in Vaishnava devotional life — this is relational, other-serving lowliness, not a devotional achievement.
Judgment and the Household of God
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী য়ুমদগী হৌরকপা ৱাহান্থাবা
Key terms: judgment begins at the household of God, account for living and dead, gospel preached to the dead
Review routing: Human theologian
This refining, purposive divine judgment on God’s own household (as a warning and comfort) must be distinguished from impersonal karmic retribution. The disputed ‘gospel preached to the dead’ clause (4:6) shares 3:19’s collision risk and must not be taught as offering ongoing post-mortem evangelistic opportunity absorbable into an ancestor-spirit-intercession framework.
Love and Christian Fellowship
Manipuri name: নুংশিবা অমসুং ক্রিস্তান লোইনবা
Key terms: love him though unseen, brotherly love, love covers a multitude of sins, fellowship in Christ’s sufferings
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Loving Christ though unseen’ (1:8) is a genuinely live collision point: Manipuri Vaishnavism’s Ras Lila tradition centers on passionate romantic-devotional love (prema) between Krishna and Radha/the gopis, publicly performed and UNESCO-recognized. This must be taught as covenantal, whole-person devotion to a supreme, exclusive Lord, not assimilated into the Radha-Krishna romantic-bhakti pattern. 4:13’s ‘fellowship in Christ’s sufferings’ extends the baseline fellowship term with a new nuance requiring explicit teaching.
Sanctification
Manipuri name: অসেংবা ওইহনবগী থৌদাং
Key terms: holy, sanctification, be holy for I am holy, holy priesthood, holy nation
Review routing: Human theologian
The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy must be distinguished from ritual purification before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship; অসেংবা conveys moral purity and set-apartness, never merely physical/ritual cleanliness (reserved for শেংবা per the baseline).
Inspiration and Preservation of Scripture (the Living Word)
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী হিংবা ৱাহেইগী থৌদাং
Key terms: living and abiding word of God, prophets searched diligently, the word of the Lord remains forever, gospel preached to you
Review routing: Human theologian
Continues the Romans baseline’s ‘Inspiration of Scripture’ doctrine. Given the historical burning of indigenous Meitei puya manuscripts in the 1729 Puya Meithaba, this doctrine of Scripture as imperishable, divinely-preserved seed of new birth carries particular positive resonance and should be taught with sensitivity to that cultural memory of lost sacred texts.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Providence and the Faithful Creator
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী থৌরাং অমসুং সেমখ্রবা তেংবাং মপুগী থাজবা য়াবা
Key terms: faithful Creator, cast your anxiety on him, God’s mighty hand
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s personal, purposive care as reliable Maker must never be rendered with ৱাইফম (impersonal fate); confidence in God’s care frees believers from anxious self-reliance, consistent with the baseline’s providence caution.
