Semantic Analysis
07 — Semantic Analysis: Jude (Koine Greek → Manipuri)
Curriculum: Jude Core passage: Jude 1:3–23 Book structure note: Jude is a single-chapter epistle (25 verses). Per the full-book coverage mandate, this analysis treats Jude 1:3–23 verse-by-verse as the theological core, and then completes full-book coverage by giving the same verse-by-verse treatment to the remaining verses of the book (1:1–2, salutation; 1:24–25, doxology). Since Jude has only one chapter, this constitutes complete coverage of the entire book, first verse to last.
Terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there and are marked [TM REUSE] below. New terms required for Jude’s distinctive vocabulary are marked [NEW] and are proposed for addition to translation memory, pending theologian/native-speaker confirmation per risk tier.
PART 1: Core Passage Verse-by-Verse — Jude 1:3–23
Jude 1:3
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| beloved | ἀγαπητοί / agapētoi | dearly loved ones | affectionate address; covenant-family term | ”beloved,” “dear friends” | Address establishing pastoral warmth before a warning letter | নুংশিরবা [NEW, Low] — from নুংশিবা (love), standard address form |
| salvation | σωτηρίας / sōtērias | rescue, deliverance | deliverance from danger; in NT, deliverance from sin/judgment through Christ | ”salvation,” “deliverance" | "Our common salvation” — the shared deliverance all believers possess in Christ | অহানবা [TM REUSE — Critical] Must not be read as শared মোক্ষ (Vaishnava liberation); “common” here means shared among believers, not universally attained enlightenment |
| contend for / struggle for | ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι / epagōnizesthai | to fight/struggle intensely on behalf of something (athletic/military metaphor, intensified by ἐπι-) | agonistic struggle, contest, exertion in defense of something already held | ”contend for,” “fight for,” “strive for” | Central verb of the letter’s purpose: defensive, preservative struggle for a fixed deposit, not devotional merit-building | কান্না হোৎনবা (kanna hotnaba) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: must be distinguished from সেবা (Vaishnava bhakti devotional service accumulating standing with Krishna); this is defense of an already-complete gift, not an ongoing devotional achievement. Also distinct from a maibi’s ritual exertion during Lai Haraoba trance. |
| once for all | ἅπαξ / hapax | one time, a single occasion, done once with lasting effect | finality; unrepeatable completeness | ”once for all,” “once” | Modifies “delivered” — the faith was given in a single, complete, closed transmission | অমুক্তা (amukta) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: must convey unrepeatable completeness, parallel to resurrection’s “once-for-all” (see baseline সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা note). Must not be softened into an ongoing/renewable revelation, contrasting cyclical frameworks (rebirth, ongoing avatar-descents, continuing prophetic utterance through maibi trance). |
| delivered / entrusted | παραδοθείσῃ / paradotheisē | handed over, handed down, entrusted | transmission of a fixed body of content from one party to another | ”delivered,” “entrusted,” “handed down” | The apostolic faith was transmitted as a complete deposit to the saints, not generated by them | শিনবিখ্রবা (shinbikhraba) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: connects directly to the baseline’s “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine (High risk) and carries particular weight given the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of Meitei puya manuscripts — this curriculum must teach a preserved, complete deposit of faith with sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory of lost sacred texts, without implying the deposit is fragile, incomplete, or endlessly reconstructable. |
| saints | ἁγίοις / hagiois | holy ones, set-apart ones | corporate designation for all believers | ”saints,” “holy ones” | The faith was given to the whole believing community, not a specialist class | অসেংবা মীওই [TM REUSE — High] |
| faith | πίστει / pistei | trust, that which is believed, the body of belief | (1) subjective trust; (2) objective body of doctrine (“the faith”) | “faith,” “the faith,” “belief” | Here objective: the fixed apostolic body of doctrine, not merely subjective trust | থাজবা [TM REUSE — High]. Note: this occurrence leans toward the objective sense (“the faith,” a deposit) rather than personal trust; translators must ensure থাজবা can bear this “body of belief” sense in context, distinguishing it from ভক্তি (bhakti, a devotional practice, not a transmitted doctrinal deposit). |
Jude 1:4
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| crept in secretly | παρεισέδυσαν / pareisedysan | slipped in stealthily alongside | covert, unauthorized entry into a group | ”have crept in,” “have slipped in unnoticed” | False teachers entered the community deceptively, not openly | চুপথাদুনা চংলাক্লবা (chupthaduna changlakliba) [NEW — Medium] |
| marked out beforehand for judgment | προγεγραμμένοι … κρίμα / progegrammenoi … krima | previously/publicly written down; a sentence/verdict | designation in advance for a specific judicial outcome | ”designated,” “marked out,” “written about beforehand” | God’s judgment on these teachers was foretold, not arbitrary | মমাংগী মথক্তা ৱায়েল লৈরবা (mamanggi mathakta wayel leiraba) [NEW — High] |
| judgment | κρίμα / krima | a legal verdict, sentence | judicial decision, condemnation | ”judgment,” “condemnation,” “sentence” | God’s judicial verdict against ungodly false teachers, central to the “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” doctrine | ৱায়েল (wayel) [NEW — High]. Risk: must convey a personal, judicial verdict from God, not impersonal fate (ৱাইফম, already rejected in baseline for election/providence) or an automatic karmic mechanism. |
| ungodly | ἀσεβεῖς / asebeis | without reverence for God, impious | lacking proper fear/honor toward God; morally and relationally rebellious | ”ungodly,” “godless,” “impious” | Core descriptor of the false teachers throughout Jude | তেংবাং মপুবু ইকায়দবা (Tengban Mapubu ikaidaba) [NEW — High]. Risk: distinct from পাপ (sin, a discrete transgression); this is a settled posture of irreverence/rebellion toward God specifically, the defining trait of the false teachers this doctrine targets. |
| grace | χάριν / charin | unmerited favor | God’s favor given apart from merit | ”grace,” “favor” | The very grace that saves is being twisted into a license for sin — the direct target of the baseline’s Critical grace warning | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং [TM REUSE — Critical]. This is the single most important occurrence of “grace” in Jude: v.4 depicts false teachers turning grace into licentiousness, which is precisely the bhakti-responsive-favor confusion the baseline’s grace note warns against (κৃপা, responsive to devotee service, never a license for lawlessness). Requires explicit teaching contrast, not just correct lexical choice. |
| turning/perverting | μετατιθέντες / metatithentes | changing, transferring, exchanging one thing for another | reclassifying/misapplying something into a different, wrong category | ”turning,” “perverting,” “twisting” | Grace is not annulled but redirected into a wrong use | মহুৎ হোংদোকপা (mahut hongdokpa) [NEW — High] |
| sensuality / licentiousness | ἀσέλγειαν / aselgeian | unrestrained indulgence, shameless excess (especially sexual) | moral abandon, lack of self-restraint | ”sensuality,” “licentiousness,” “debauchery” | The wrong destination to which grace is being redirected — grace misused as permission for unrestrained sin | অনিয়ম চৎনবিরাক (aniyam chatnabirak) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: directly paired with the Critical grace term; must clearly show grace-as-license is a perversion, not an acceptable reading of grace, since Romans’ own grace-versus-license argument (6:1, 15) is being echoed and intensified here. |
| only Sovereign/Master | μόνον δεσπότην / monon despotēn | the one and only Master/Owner (slave-master image) | absolute ownership-authority; often paired with κύριος for emphasis | ”Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “only Sovereign” | Jesus Christ is named with an ownership-authority title distinct from, and paired with, “Lord” — double emphasis on his deity and exclusive claim | স্বামী মপু (swami mapu) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: this is a Deity-of-Christ verse — δεσπότης and κύριος are both applied to Jesus Christ in a single clause, denying him is denying God himself. Must not be softened into “master” as a mere honorific teacher-title (which could echo a guru/religious-teacher framing); this is absolute divine ownership-authority. |
| Lord | κύριον / kyrion | supreme lord, master | exclusive divine authority | ”Lord” | Paired with δεσπότην to doubly affirm Christ’s supreme, exclusive Lordship | মপু ইবুংগো [TM REUSE — Critical] |
| deny | ἀρνούμενοι / arnoumenoi | to refuse to acknowledge, disown | rejection of a claim or relationship | ”denying,” “disowning,” “refusing to acknowledge” | The false teachers’ practical unbelief expressed as denial of Christ’s Lordship | য়াদবা (yadaba) [NEW — High]. Risk: ties directly to the baseline’s lordship_of_christ Critical doctrine; must convey outright repudiation of Christ’s supreme authority, not mere disagreement or doubt. |
Jude 1:5
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| remind | Ὑπομνῆσαι / hypomnēsai | to cause to remember | recalling known truth, not new revelation | ”remind,” “call to mind” | Jude appeals to shared, already-known truth — reinforcing the “once delivered” fixed-deposit theme of v.3 | ৱাখল্লো হল্লকপা (wakhallou hallakpa) [NEW — Low] |
| once (fully knew) | ἅπαξ πάντα / hapax panta | once for all, [knowing] all things fully | completeness of prior knowledge | ”once for all,” “fully,” “once” | Same finality-marker as v.3, applied to the readers’ prior instruction | অমুক্তা [NEW — reuse of v.3 term; High] |
| people | λαόν / laon | a people-group, nation | Israel as God’s covenant people in this context | ”people,” “nation” | Refers to Israel, delivered from Egypt yet later judged for unbelief — the first of Jude’s three OT warning-types | মীওইশিং / (contextually) ইস্রায়েলগী মীওইশিং, cross-referencing ইস্রায়েল [TM REUSE for the proper name — Medium] |
| those who did not believe | τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσαντας / tous mē pisteusantas | the ones not having believed/trusted | absence of trust/faith | ”those who did not believe,” “unbelievers” | Even the redeemed can be destroyed through unbelief — a warning, not a statement about losing a prior salvation status carelessly | থাজবা য়াওদবা (thajaba yaodaba), built on থাজবা [TM REUSE root — High] |
| destroyed | ἀπώλεσεν / apōlesen | ruined, brought to destruction/death | judicial destruction, not annihilation of being | ”destroyed,” “brought to ruin” | Divine judgment executed on unbelieving Israel in the wilderness | মানহনখি (manhankhi) [NEW — Medium] |
Translator note (Critical, textual variant): The earliest and best manuscripts (favored by NA28/UBS5) read Ἰησοῦς (“Jesus”) as the one who saved the people out of Egypt and later destroyed the unbelievers, rather than ὁ κύριος (“the Lord”) found in the Byzantine tradition. This is a significant Christological claim — the pre-existent Christ active in the Exodus — directly relevant to the baseline’s deity_of_christ and lordship_of_christ Critical doctrines. This textual decision must be made explicitly by a human theologian before translation, and whichever reading is chosen, the note should explain to Manipuri readers why this matters for Christ’s eternal deity, since it stands in sharp contrast to any avatar-sequence framework in which a deity’s activity is confined to a bounded incarnate episode.
Jude 1:6
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| angels | ἀγγέλους / angelous | messengers (heavenly beings sent by God) | created spiritual beings serving God’s purposes | ”angels” | The second OT/pre-flood warning-type: angels who abandoned their God-given position | স্বর্গগী থাদোকপা (swargagi thadokpa) [NEW — High]. Risk: this is a genuinely new category for Manipuri Christian vocabulary. Must be sharply distinguished from the Umang Lai (forest/guardian deities honored at Lai Haraoba) and from ancestral spirits (Apokpa) in Sanamahi cosmology — angels are created servants of the one true God, morally accountable to him, not a populated pantheon of semi-autonomous nature-deities or ancestor-spirits. Do not use লাই (the generic Meitei word for “deity/god,” embedded in Umang Lai, Sanamahi Lai) for “angel,” as this would import polytheistic categories. |
| did not keep | μὴ τηρήσαντας / mē tērēsantas | did not guard/maintain/preserve | failure to remain within an assigned boundary or role | ”did not keep,” “did not stay within” | The angels failed to remain within their God-assigned position — the negative counterpart to the “kept by God” doctrine | থাম্লবা (thamlaba), from থাম্বা [NEW — High] |
| position / domain | ἀρχὴν / archēn | rule, realm, sphere of authority, first place | assigned office, domain of authority | ”position,” “domain,” “authority,” “first estate” | The angels abandoned their proper, God-given sphere of authority | মথক্তা লৈবা মফম (mathakta leiba mafam) [NEW — Medium] |
| dwelling place | οἰκητήριον / oikētērion | habitation, dwelling | one’s proper abode/place of residence | ”dwelling,” “proper home,” “abode” | Abandoning their proper heavenly abode, parallel to abandoning their office | লৈফম (leifam) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
| judgment | κρίσιν / krisin | judgment, verdict | same semantic field as κρίμα (v.4) | “judgment,” “condemnation” | The great eschatological day of judgment reserved for these angels | ৱায়েল [NEW — reuse of v.4 term; High] |
| eternal chains | δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοις / desmois aidiois | everlasting bonds/fetters | permanent, unbreakable restraint | ”eternal chains,” “everlasting bonds” | Permanent divine restraint, not a temporary or cyclical confinement | লোমহৌত্তবা য়ংবা (lomhouttaba yongba) [NEW — High] |
| darkness / gloom | ζόφον / zophon | thick darkness, gloom | a place or state of deep darkness, often associated with judgment | ”darkness,” “gloom,” “blackness” | The place of confinement for these judged angels | অমাংবা (amangba) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
| has kept | τετήρηκεν / tetērēken | has guarded, has kept in a state | God’s active, ongoing custody | ”has kept,” “has reserved,” “has held in custody” | God himself is the one actively keeping the fallen angels in judgment — establishing τηρέω as a “kept by God” keyword used both positively (believers) and negatively (fallen angels) throughout the letter | থাম্লি (thamli), from থাম্বা [NEW — High] |
Jude 1:7
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sodom and Gomorrah | Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα / Sodoma kai Gomorra | proper names | the two judged cities of Genesis 19 | ”Sodom and Gomorrah” | The third OT warning-type: cities destroyed for persistent, flagrant sin | সোদোম অমসুং গোমোরাহ (Sodom amasung Gomorah) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration] |
| sexual immorality | ἐκπορνεύσασαι / ekporneusasai | to indulge in fornication/sexual sin (intensive form) | persistent, flagrant sexual sin | ”indulged in sexual immorality,” “committed fornication” | The specific sin bringing judgment on these cities | নুপী-নুপা ৱাথোক্তা পাপ চোলবা (nupi-nupa wathokta pap cholba) [NEW — Medium] |
| strange/different flesh | σαρκὸς ἑτέρας / sarkos heteras | flesh of another/different kind | sexual pursuit outside the natural created order | ”unnatural desire,” “strange flesh” | Points to the specific perversion behind Sodom’s judgment | সরক অতোপ্পা (sarak atoppa) [NEW — Medium] |
| example | δεῖγμα / deigma | sample, specimen, visible demonstration | a public, visible warning-case | ”example,” “warning example” | Sodom stands publicly as a warning-type for later readers — reinforcing the “OT Warnings as Types” doctrine | মথৌ উৎপা (mathou utpa) [NEW — Medium] |
| eternal fire | πυρὸς αἰωνίου / pyros aiōniou | everlasting/unending fire | permanent judicial punishment, not a purifying or temporary fire | ”eternal fire,” “everlasting fire” | The permanence of divine judgment against unrepentant sin | লোমহৌত্তবা মেই (lomhouttaba mei) [NEW — High]. Risk: must convey permanent judicial punishment, not a purificatory or cyclical fire (contrast with any notion of purifying rebirth-through-fire found in regional religious imagination). |
| punishment | δίκην / dikēn | penalty, punishment | judicial penalty | ”punishment,” “penalty” | Ongoing display of judicial consequence | চেইরक (cheirak) [NEW — Medium] |
Jude 1:8
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| dreaming | ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι / enypniazomenoi | dreaming, given to visions | operating on self-generated visionary claims, not sober revelation | ”dreaming,” “relying on visions” | The false teachers claim visionary authority for their immoral teaching | মৎ (mang) মায়া থোকপা [NEW — Medium]. Risk: must not be rendered in a way that dignifies their claims as genuine prophetic/oracular experience; distinguish from a maibi’s trance-derived utterance, which this text implicitly critiques as a category of false spiritual authority. |
| defile | μιαίνουσιν / miainousin | to pollute, make impure | moral/ritual contamination | ”defile,” “pollute,” “corrupt” | Moral corruption of the body through sin | মশাহনবা (mashahanba) [NEW — Medium] |
| authority/lordship | κυριότητα / kyriotēta | dominion, lordship, authority | a broader term for governing authority — here likely God’s or Christ’s supreme dominion, possibly also angelic authority structures | ”authority,” “lordship,” “dominion” | The false teachers reject legitimate divine (and possibly angelic) governing authority | মপু ওইবগী মথৌ (mapu oibagi mathou), root shared with মপু ইবুংগো [NEW — High] |
| reject / set aside | ἀθετοῦσιν / athetousin | to nullify, disregard, treat as invalid | dismissive rejection of established authority | ”reject,” “despise,” “set aside” | Active rebellion against legitimate authority | য়াদনা থামনবা (yadana thamnaba) [NEW — Medium] |
| glorious ones | δόξας / doxas | glories (plural) — likely angelic/majestic beings, or dignities | abstract “glory” OR (more likely here) glorious/majestic beings deserving honor | ”glorious ones,” “celestial beings,” “dignitaries” | The false teachers slander angelic beings/authorities they do not understand | মতিক চাউবা মীওইশিং (matik chauba miwoishing), built on [TM] মতিক চাউবা [NEW compound — High]. Risk: this is a distinct sense of δόξα from the abstract “glory” used in vv.24–25; must not be flattened into the same rendering without clarification, or readers may miss that specific created beings are meant. |
| blaspheme | βλασφημοῦσιν / blasphēmousin | to speak evil of, slander, revile impiously | grave irreverent insult, especially against God or sacred things | ”blaspheme,” “revile,” “slander” | The false teachers irreverently insult glorious/angelic beings — contrasted with Michael’s restraint in v.9 | থেংনবা (thengnaba) [NEW — High]. Risk: must convey grave, irreverent insult against what is sacred, not casual insult; sets up the direct contrast with Michael’s restraint in the next verse. |
Jude 1:9
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Michael | Μιχαὴλ / Michaēl | proper name | the named archangel | ”Michael” | Contrasted positively against the false teachers’ irreverence | মিখায়েল (Mikhayel) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration] |
| archangel | ἀρχάγγελος / archangelos | chief/ruling angel | highest-ranking angelic being | ”archangel” | Even the highest angel shows restraint toward the devil, unlike the false teachers | স্বর্গগী থাদোকপশিংগী মহৌসা (swargagi thadokpashinggi mahousa) [NEW — Medium], built on the angel term above |
| devil | διαβόλῳ / diabolō | slanderer, accuser | the personal cosmic adversary of God and his people | ”devil,” “Satan,” “the accuser” | Michael disputes with the devil but does not presume to pronounce a reviling judgment on him | শয়তান (Shoytan) [NEW — High]. Risk: must be understood as a singular, personal, cosmic adversary of the one true God, distinct from the diffuse, morally ambiguous spirit-world of Sanamahi cosmology (mischievous nature-spirits, ancestral spirits) and distinct from asura/demon figures within Vaishnava mythology, which function within a different narrative-cosmological framework. |
| disputing | διακρινόμενος / diakrinomenos | contending, disputing (same root as v.22’s “wavering”) | argument/contention between two parties | ”disputing,” “contending,” “arguing” | Note the same root (διακριν-) is used positively of Michael’s careful dispute here and later of wavering believers (v.22) — a deliberate lexical echo the translator should be aware of even though the sense differs | ৱারী চেন্নবা (wari chennaba) [NEW — Medium] |
| Moses | Μωϋσέως / Mōuseōs | proper name | Old Testament lawgiver | ”Moses” | Reference to an extra-biblical Jewish tradition about a dispute over Moses’ body/burial | মোশে (Moshe) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration] |
| a judgment of blasphemy / reviling accusation | κρίσιν ἐπενεγκεῖν βλασφημίας / krisin epenegkein blasphēmias | to bring/pronounce a judgment of slander | pronouncing a condemning, insulting verdict | ”did not dare to bring a reviling accusation,” “did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment” | Michael’s restraint models proper reverence even toward a defeated enemy, directly contrasting the false teachers’ reckless slander of glorious beings (v.8) | ৱায়েলগী থেংনবা পীবা (wayelgi thengnaba piba), combining ৱায়েল + থেংনবা [NEW — High] |
| rebuke | Ἐπιτιμήσαι / Epitimēsai | to rebuke, reprimand with authority | authoritative correction | ”rebuke,” “reprove” | Michael leaves judgment to the Lord rather than pronouncing it himself | কায়নবা (kaynaba) [NEW — Medium] |
Translator/theologian note (High): Jude 1:9 draws on a Jewish tradition (widely associated with the apocryphal Assumption of Moses) not found in the Old Testament canon. Jude 1:14–15 similarly quotes 1 Enoch by name. This must be explicitly taught: Jude’s citation of extra-biblical Jewish tradition as illustrative material does not confer canonical/scriptural status on those source documents; it reflects the inspired apostolic author’s authoritative use of known material, not an expansion of the biblical canon. This point deserves particular care in the Manipuri context, given the cultural memory of the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei puya manuscripts — teachers should be equipped to explain clearly why Jude’s use of non-canonical material differs categorically from claiming those documents as Scripture, connecting to the baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine (High risk, human theologian review required).
Jude 1:10
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| blaspheme | βλασφημοῦσιν / blasphēmousin | see v.8 | — | “blaspheme,” “slander” | The false teachers slander what they do not understand | থেংনবা [NEW — reuse of v.8 term; High] |
| irrational/unreasoning animals | ἄλογα ζῷα / aloga zōa | animals without reason/speech | creatures governed by instinct, not moral reason | ”irrational animals,” “unreasoning creatures,” “brute beasts” | The false teachers behave on instinct-driven appetite, not reasoned moral understanding | মিওল-থাশা লায়রবা শা (miwol-thasha layraba sha) [NEW — Medium] |
| destroyed/corrupted | φθείρονται / phtheirontai | ruined, corrupted, destroyed | moral and ultimately eschatological ruin | ”destroyed,” “corrupted,” “ruined” | Following mere animal instinct leads to their own destruction | মানহনবা (manhanba) [NEW — Medium] |
Jude 1:11
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| way (of Cain) | ὁδῷ … Κάϊν / hodō … Kain | path/road of Cain | a pattern of life/conduct associated with a figure | ”the way of Cain” | Cain’s pattern: jealous, murderous rejection of right worship — first OT “type” figure of this triad | কয়িনগী লম্বী (Kaingi lambi) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration + লম্বী “path”] |
| error/deceit (of Balaam) | πλάνῃ … Βαλαὰμ / planē … Balaam | wandering, deception, error | leading others astray for personal gain | ”the error of Balaam,” “Balaam’s deceit” | Balaam’s pattern: a religious figure who corrupted others for profit — directly parallels false teachers’ motive in Jude (cf. v.16, “advantage”) | বালামগী অরানবা (Balamgi aranaba) [NEW — Medium] |
| for hire/reward | μισθοῦ / misthou | wage, payment | corrupt profit-motive | ”for reward,” “for pay,” “for profit” | The false teachers, like Balaam, corrupt teaching for personal gain | কর (kor)/থোকহনবগী মথৌ (thokhanbagi mathou) [NEW — Medium] |
| rebellion (of Korah) | ἀντιλογίᾳ … Κόρε / antilogia … Korē | contradiction, defiance, rebellion | organized rebellion against established, God-appointed authority | ”the rebellion of Korah” | Korah’s pattern: rebellion against God-appointed leadership — the third OT “type” figure | কোরাগী থেংথোকপা (Koragi thengthokpa) [NEW — Medium] |
| perished | ἀπώλοντο / apōlonto | destroyed, ruined | judicial destruction | ”perished,” “were destroyed” | The historical, decisive judgment on Korah’s rebellion | মানহনখি [NEW — reuse of v.5 term; Medium] |
Jude 1:12
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love feasts | ἀγάπαις / agapais | love-feasts (early Christian communal meals) | shared communal meals expressing agapē among believers | ”love feasts,” “fellowship meals” | The false teachers corrupt the church’s own communal worship-meal | নুংশিবগী চনবা (nungshibagi chanaba), built on love-term below [NEW — Medium] |
| hidden reefs/blemishes | σπιλάδες / spilades | submerged rocks (or, alternatively, “blemishes/stains”) | danger hidden within a gathering | ”hidden reefs,” “blemishes” | The false teachers are a hidden danger within the church’s own fellowship meals | মায়োক্না লৈরবা রাই (mayokna leiraba rai) [NEW — Medium] |
| feasting together shamelessly | συνευωχούμενοι ἀφόβως / syneuōchoumenoi aphobōs | feasting together without fear/shame | brazen indulgence within a sacred communal context | ”feasting without fear,” “carousing shamelessly” | Public, unashamed abuse of a sacred communal practice | কিদন্না চানবা (kidanna chanaba) [NEW — Medium] |
| shepherding themselves | ἑαυτοὺς ποιμαίνοντες / heautous poimainontes | tending/pasturing themselves | self-serving leadership, contrasted with true shepherding of others | ”shepherding only themselves,” “feeding only themselves” | False leaders who care only for themselves, not the flock — direct contrast to genuine pastoral ministry | মশাগী মথক্তা খল্লবা য়েনবা (mashagi mathakta khalliba yenba) [NEW — Medium] |
| waterless clouds | νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι / nephelai anydroi | clouds without water | something promising rain/refreshment but delivering nothing | ”waterless clouds” | The false teachers promise spiritual refreshment but deliver nothing | ইশিং লৈত্তবা লৈচিল (ishing leittaba leichil) [NEW — Medium] |
ἐκριζωθέντα / dendra phthinopōrina akarpa … ekrizōthenta | trees of late autumn bearing no fruit, torn up by the roots | complete spiritual barrenness and lack of stable rootedness | ”fruitless trees,” “uprooted trees” | Total spiritual barrenness and instability of the false teachers | মহै লৈতবা উপাল খুৎথাদোকখ্রবা (mahei leitaba upal khutthadokkhraba) [NEW — Medium] |
Composite note on nature-imagery (vv.12–13, Medium risk): The cluster of images (waterless clouds, fruitless uprooted trees, wild waves, wandering stars) functions rhetorically as vivid, non-technical description of false teachers’ emptiness and instability. Translators should render these plainly as metaphor and avoid any phrasing that would suggest astrological significance for “wandering stars” (v.13) — Manipuri readers should not receive this as a reference to fortune-telling or star-reading power (cf. baseline’s caution distinguishing “prophet” from astrologer/fortune-teller).
Jude 1:13

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wild waves of the sea | κύματα ἄγρια θαλάσσης / kymata agria thalassēs | untamed sea-waves | violent, uncontrolled turbulence | ”wild waves” | The false teachers’ shameless conduct is like turbulent, foaming sea-waves | ইপাক্কী কুরুম্বা ইছিং (ipakki kurumba iching) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
| foaming up their own shame | ἐπαφρίζοντα τὰς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνας / epaphrizonta tas heautōn aischynas | frothing/foaming up their own disgraceful deeds | shameful conduct made publicly visible, like foam cast up by waves | ”casting up the foam of their own shame” | Their disgraceful conduct becomes publicly visible, like foam | মায়ৈ শোকপগী মশাগী ইকায়দবা (mayai shokpagi mashagi ikaidaba) [NEW — Medium] |
| wandering stars | ἀστέρες πλανῆται / asteres planētai | stars that wander (i.e., planets, in ancient astronomy — irregular, unpredictable movers) | erratic, directionless movement without a fixed, reliable course | ”wandering stars,” “shooting stars” | The false teachers promise guidance/light but move erratically toward destruction | চহি লম্বী য়াওদবা থাওয়ানমী (chahi lambi yaodaba thawanmi) [NEW — Medium; see composite note above re: astrological caution] |
| blackness of darkness forever | ὁ ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα / ho zophos tou skotous eis aiōna | the gloom of darkness for the age/forever | permanent, total, judicial darkness | ”the deepest darkness,” “utter blackness reserved forever” | Permanent judicial darkness awaiting them — echoes v.6’s fallen angels | অমাংবা লোমহৌত্তবা (amangba lomhouttaba) [NEW — High, echoing v.6 terms] |
Jude 1:14

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| prophesied | Προεφήτευσεν / Proephēteusen | spoke as God’s inspired spokesperson | inspired, forward-looking declaration | ”prophesied,” “foretold” | Enoch’s inspired declaration about final judgment, quoted from 1 Enoch (see the Critical translator/theologian note under v.9 regarding non-canonical citation) | ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল পীখি, built on [TM REUSE root] ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল — Low-High depending on canonicity framing (see note below) |
| Enoch | Ἑνὼχ / Henōch | proper name | seventh from Adam (per genealogy) | “Enoch” | Source of the quoted prophecy | এনোক (Enok) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration] |
| holy myriads | ἁγίαις μυριάσιν / hagiais myriasin | holy ten-thousands | vast angelic host | ”holy myriads,” “his holy ones,” “ten thousands of his saints” | Christ’s future coming in judgment, accompanied by a vast angelic host | অসেংবা লিসিং লিসिংগী মীওইশিং (asengba lising lisinggi miwoishing), built on [TM] অসেংবা [NEW compound — Medium-High] |
Translator/theologian note (High, reiterating v.9’s note): v.14–15 explicitly names and quotes 1 Enoch, a Jewish apocryphal work outside the Protestant canon. Teachers must clearly explain that Jude’s inspired, authoritative citation of true material found within a non-canonical book does not itself canonize that book — this distinction between apostolic citation and canonicity is essential and should be taught explicitly given local sensitivity to the memory of lost/destroyed sacred manuscripts (Puya Meithaba).

| ungodly / ungodliness | ἀσεβεῖς / ἀσεβείας / asebeis / asebeias | see v.4 | — | “ungodly,” “ungodliness” | Repeated four times in this verse for emphasis — the defining charge against the false teachers | তেংবাং মপুবু ইকায়দবা [NEW — reuse of v.4 term; High] |
| sinners | ἁμαρτωλοὶ / hamartōloi | those who sin, transgressors | morally guilty before God | ”sinners” | Final summary indictment | পাপ চোলবা মীওই (pap cholba miwoi), built on [TM] পাপ [NEW compound — High] |

| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| grumblers | γογγυσταί / goggystai | complainers, murmurers | chronic dissatisfaction, echoing wilderness Israel’s grumbling | ”grumblers” | Echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling (cf. v.5), reinforcing the OT-warning-type pattern | ৱাখাল হেনগৎলবা মীওই (wakhal hengatliba miwoi) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
| malcontents | μεμψίμοιροι / mempsimoiroi | fault-finders, dissatisfied with one’s lot | chronic complaint about circumstances | ”malcontents,” “faultfinders” | Chronic dissatisfaction and complaint | মথৌ য়াদবা মীওই (mathou yadaba miwoi) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
| lusts/desires | ἐπιθυμίας / epithymias | strong desire, craving | often negative — sinful cravings | ”lusts,” “desires,” “passions” | Their conduct is driven by unchecked desire rather than by the transmitted faith | ৱাখল্লোন অশোকপা (wakhallon ashokpa) [NEW — Medium] |
| bombastic/boastful words | ὑπέρογκα / hyperogka | swollen, bloated, inflated | pompous, arrogant speech | ”great swelling words,” “bombastic speech” | Empty, self-promoting speech from teachers with no real substance | চাউথোকপা ৱাহেই (chauthokpa wahei) [NEW — Medium], overlapping construction with the μεγαλωσύνη term (v.25) but negative here — contrast is deliberate and should be preserved in translation notes |
| flattering people | θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα / thaumazontes prosōpa | admiring/marveling at faces, i.e., showing partiality/flattery | currying favor for advantage | ”showing favoritism,” “flattering people” | Manipulative flattery for personal gain | মীওইদা থাগৎচরি হাপ্তবা (miwoida thagatchari haptaba)/মিত হায়বা [NEW — Medium] |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| remember | μνήσθητε / mnēsthēte | call to mind, recollect | active recollection of received teaching | ”remember,” “recall” | The readers are told to actively recall the apostles’ prior teaching — parallel to the “reminding” motif of v.5 | ৱাখল্লো হল্লকপা [NEW — reuse of v.5 term; Low] |
| words / sayings | ῥημάτων / rhēmatōn | spoken words, sayings | authoritative spoken teaching | ”words,” “sayings,” “predictions” | The specific content of prior apostolic teaching, especially about coming scoffers | ৱাহেইশিং (waheishing) [NEW — Low] |

Jude 1:18
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| last time | ἐσχάτου χρόνου / eschatou chronou | the final/last period | the present church age preceding Christ’s return | ”the last time,” “the last days” | Places the false teachers’ rise within the church’s expected eschatological experience — not an unexpected surprise | মথক্কী নুমিৎশিং (mathakki numitshing) [NEW — Medium] |
| scoffers/mockers | ἐμπαῖκται / empaiktai | mockers, scoffers | those who deride truth or moral seriousness | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | The false teachers are specifically characterized as scoffers/mockers | নোৎপা মীওই (notpa miwoi) [NEW — Medium] |

Jude 1:19
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| causing divisions | ἀποδιορίζοντες / apodiorizontes | making distinctions/divisions, separating | creating factional splits within the church | ”causing divisions,” “who cause separations” | The false teachers fracture church unity | খেৎনরিবা (khetnariba) [NEW — Medium] |
| worldly/natural (without the Spirit) | ψυχικοί / psychikoi | soul-governed, merely natural | operating on natural human capacity alone, without the Spirit’s regenerating presence | ”worldly,” “unspiritual,” “merely natural,” “sensual” | The false teachers are unregenerate — they operate on natural human faculties alone, lacking the Spirit | থাওয়াই অসেংবা য়াওদবা মীওই (thawai asengba yaodaba miwoi) [NEW — High]. Risk: this term requires careful handling in Manipuri. Traditional Sanamahi belief holds that every human possesses থাওয়াই (soul/spirit) — the text is NOT denying these people have a soul in that generic sense; it is specifically denying they possess the personal, indwelling Holy Spirit (πνεῦμα, contrasted here with ψυχή). The rendering must make clear this is about the absence of God’s regenerating Spirit, not about lacking a soul altogether. |
| not having the Spirit | πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες / pneuma mē echontes | not having [the] Spirit | absence of the indwelling Holy Spirit | ”not having the Spirit,” “devoid of the Spirit” | Direct explanatory gloss on ψυχικοί | থাওয়াই অসেংবা য়াওদবা [NEW — reuse of above; High] |
Jude 1:20
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| most holy faith | ἁγιωτάτῃ … πίστει / hagiōtatē … pistei | most holy faith (superlative) | the transmitted apostolic faith, described by its holiness | ”most holy faith” | Echoes v.3’s “faith once delivered” — the fixed doctrinal deposit believers are to build on, described as supremely holy | অসেংবা থাজবা (asengba thajaba), built on [TM] অসেংবা + থাজবা [NEW compound — High] |
| building up | ἐποικοδομοῦντες / epoikodomountes | building upon, constructing further | ongoing spiritual growth on an existing foundation | ”building yourselves up,” “building up” | Positive counterpart to the false teachers’ “causing divisions” (v.19) — mutual/self edification on the fixed apostolic foundation | হৌদোকহনবা (houdokhanba) [NEW — Low, cross-references baseline’s “mutual_edification” doctrine] |
| Holy Spirit | πνεύματι ἁγίῳ / pneumati hagiō | Holy Spirit | the personal, divine third Person of the Trinity | ”Holy Spirit” | Praying in and by the Spirit’s enabling presence, in direct contrast to the Spirit-lacking false teachers of v.19 | থাওয়াই অসেংবা [TM REUSE — Critical] |
| praying | προσευχόμενοι / proseuchomenoi | praying | communicating with God in prayer | ”praying” | Prayer as one of the practices of the “kept” and faithful believer | হায়জবা (haijaba), cross-referencing baseline’s intercession term মখোয়গী মফমদা হায়জবা [NEW — Low] |
Jude 1:21
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love of God | ἀγάπῃ θεοῦ / agapē theou | God’s love | God’s covenantal, self-giving love, and/or believers’ responsive love toward God | ”the love of God” | The relational sphere in which believers are to actively keep themselves | তেংবাং মপুগী নুংশিবা (Tengban Mapugi nungshiba) [NEW — High]. Risk: নুংশিবা (love) must be distinguished from the romantically-coded প্রেম register of Radha-Krishna bhakti devotion celebrated through the Ras Lila dance tradition; agapē here is covenantal, self-giving, morally serious love, not the passionate romantic-devotional love that Ras Lila performance culturally evokes for Meitei Hindu audiences. |
| keep yourselves | τηρήσατε / tērēsate | keep, guard, preserve (imperative) | active human responsibility, exercised within God’s prior keeping | ”keep yourselves” | The human-responsibility side of the “Kept by God” doctrine — believers actively remain within the sphere of God’s love, even as ultimately kept by God’s own power (cf. v.24) | থাম্মু (thammu), imperative of থাম্বা [NEW — reuse of vv.1, 6 root; High] |
| waiting for / eagerly awaiting | προσδεχόμενοι / prosdechomenoi | expecting, waiting eagerly | hopeful anticipation of a future certain event | ”waiting for,” “looking forward to” | Hopeful eschatological expectation of Christ’s mercy at his return | ঙাইরিবা (ngairiba) [NEW — Medium] |
| mercy | ἔλεος / eleos | compassion shown to one in need or distress, especially withholding deserved punishment | compassionate favor, particularly toward those in a position of need/danger, distinct from χάρις (grace) which emphasizes unmerited gift-giving | ”mercy,” “compassion” | God’s/Christ’s mercy is the basis of final hope, and (per vv.2, 22–23) the pattern believers are to imitate toward the wavering | ৱারৈশিনবা (wareisinba) [NEW — High]. Risk: distinct from, though related to, the baseline’s Critical grace term (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং); mercy specifically emphasizes compassion that withholds deserved judgment/rescues from danger, which must not be confused with Vaishnava bhakti’s কৃপা (favor responsive to devotional service). Central to the “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” doctrine. |
| eternal life | ζωὴν αἰώνιον / zōēn aiōnion | unending life | permanent, personal, relational life with God, beginning now and continuing forever | ”eternal life,” “everlasting life” | The final goal toward which believers, kept by mercy, are moving | লোমহৌত্তবা হিংবা (lomhouttaba hingba) [NEW — Critical]. Risk: must not be conflated with মোক্ষ (Vaishnava liberation from the cycle of rebirth) or with a bhakti devotee’s hoped-for eternal absorption into or nearness to Krishna’s presence in Vaikuntha/Goloka — both are live, specific aspirations in Manipuri Vaishnava devotional life. Eternal life is unending personal, relational life with the one true God through Christ’s finished work, not liberation from a cosmic cycle. Cross-reference the baseline’s Critical “salvation” entry. |
Jude 1:22
Greek (per NA28, noting significant textual variation across manuscript traditions — see note below): καὶ οὕς μὲν ἐλεᾶτε διακρινομένους,
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| have mercy on | ἐλεᾶτε / eleate | show mercy/compassion to | active compassionate response | ”have mercy on,” “show mercy to” | Believers are to actively extend the same mercy God shows (v.21) to struggling fellow believers | ৱারৈশিনবা [NEW — reuse of v.21 term; High] |
| wavering / doubting | διακρινομένους / diakrinomenous | those disputing/doubting/wavering within themselves | inward spiritual uncertainty, hesitation, doubt — not settled apostasy | ”who are doubting,” “who waver,” “who are disputing” | The specific object of compassionate rescue in this doctrine — a struggling, uncertain believer, not an unrepentant false teacher | চিংনরিবা (chingnariba) [NEW — High]. Risk: central to the “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” doctrine; must be rendered so as to distinguish this group clearly from the unrepentant “ungodly” false teachers targeted for judgment throughout the letter — the wavering are to be shown compassion and rescued, not condemned. Note the shared Greek root διακριν- with Michael’s careful “disputing” in v.9 — an intentional or coincidental echo the translator should be aware of, though the sense here is doubt/hesitation rather than formal dispute. |
Translator/theologian note (High, textual variant): Jude 1:22–23 shows substantial and well-documented manuscript variation. Some manuscript traditions present a clear three-part structure (mercy on the doubting; snatch others from the fire to save them; show mercy to yet others with fear, hating the defiled garment). Others compress this into two groups or vary the verbs. This structural decision materially affects the “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” doctrine — how many categories of struggling people are in view, and what differentiated pastoral action is prescribed for each — and must be resolved by a human theologian working from an agreed base text before Phase 2 translation of this passage proceeds.
Jude 1:23
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| save | σῴζετε / sōzete | rescue, deliver | active human participation in another’s rescue from spiritual danger | ”save,” “rescue” | Believers are to actively participate in rescuing others from real spiritual danger, echoing the σωτηρία root of v.3 | অহানবিবা root, verb: কান্বিবা/অহানবা তৌবা [NEW verb form of [TM] অহানবা — High] |
| snatching | ἁρπάζοντες / harpazontes | seizing, pulling/snatching forcefully | urgent, forceful rescue action | ”snatching,” “pulling out” | Conveys urgency — the danger is real and the rescue must be decisive | লৌথোকপা (louthokpa) [NEW — Medium]. Risk: convey urgent, compassionate rescue from real danger, not coercive or forced conversion. |
| out of the fire | ἐκ πυρὸς / ek pyros | out of fire | imminent judgment (cf. v.7’s eternal fire) | “out of the fire” | Ties this rescue directly to the eternal-fire judgment theme established in v.7 | মেইদগী (meidagi), cross-referencing v.7’s লোমহৌত্তবা মেই [NEW — High] |
| mercy … with fear | ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ / eleate en phobō | show mercy in/with fear | compassion exercised with appropriate caution against contamination by the sin involved | ”have mercy, with fear,” “show mercy mixed with fear” | Mercy toward the wavering must be exercised carefully, without becoming complicit in the sin itself | ৱারৈশিনবা … কিবগা লোয়ননা (wareisinba … kibaga loinana) [NEW — reuse of ৱারৈশিনবা; High] |
| hating the defiled garment | μισοῦντες … ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα / misountes … espilōmenon chitōna | hating the stained/polluted tunic | rejecting/detesting the moral contamination associated with the sin, even while rescuing the sinner | ”hating even the garment stained by the flesh” | Rescuers must reject the sin itself even as they compassionately rescue the sinner | মশাদবা ফুরিত তুকচদবা (mashadaba phurit tukchadaba) [NEW — Medium]. Risk: this is a moral-contamination metaphor, not a literal ritual-garment-purity requirement; must not be conflated with the garment-purity preparations undertaken before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship, which are literal ritual practices, not metaphors for moral rescue. |
PART 2: Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (entire book) — Jude 1:1–25
Jude is a single-chapter epistle; chapter 1 constitutes the entire book. Verses 3–23 have received full verse-by-verse treatment above as the theological core passage. To complete full-book coverage, this section covers the remaining verses not included in the core passage: the salutation (1:1–2) and the closing doxology (1:24–25).
Jude 1:1
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| servant/slave | δοῦλος / doulos | slave, bondservant | one wholly owned by and devoted to a master | ”servant,” “bondservant,” “slave” | Jude identifies himself by his complete devotion/ownership relationship to Jesus Christ, not by personal status or family prestige | লান্মী (lanmi) [NEW — High]. Risk: লান্মী is also the historical Meitei term for a war-captive assigned to serve nobility, a specific socio-historical institution of forced servitude. Translators/teachers must clarify that Jude’s self-designation describes willing, honored devotion to Christ as absolute Master, not the historical forced-servitude institution, to avoid unintended social-caste associations. |
| brother | ἀδελφὸς / adelphos | brother (biological or figurative) | family relationship; here, biological brother of James | ”brother” | Establishes Jude’s identity and family connection to James (likely the Lord’s brother/Jerusalem church leader) | ইচিন (ichin) [NEW — Low] |
| beloved (in God the Father) | ἠγαπημένοις / ēgapēmenois | having been loved | perfect passive — a settled, ongoing state of being loved by God | ”beloved,” “loved” | Believers’ identity is grounded in God’s settled prior love, not their own achievement | নুংশিরবা, built on নুংশিবা [NEW — Medium] |
| kept (for Jesus Christ) | τετηρημένοις / tetērēmenois | having been kept/preserved | perfect passive — a settled, ongoing state of being kept | ”kept,” “preserved,” “guarded” | Introduces the letter’s “kept by God” theme in its very first verse — believers are preserved by God’s own action, anticipating v.24’s climax | থাম্রবা, from থাম্বা [NEW — reuse of vv.6, 21 root; High] |
| called | κλητοῖς / klētois | summoned, called ones | those who have received God’s effectual summons to salvation | ”called” | Effectual calling — the same category of divine summons treated as High risk in the baseline Romans doctrine set | কৌখিবা [TM REUSE — High] |
Jude 1:2
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mercy | ἔλεος / eleos | see v.21 | — | “mercy” | Opening greeting anticipates the letter’s climactic emphasis on mercy toward the wavering (vv.21–23) | ৱারৈশিনবা [NEW — reuse; High] |
| peace | εἰρήνη / eirēnē | relational well-being, peace | covenantal peace with God | ”peace” | Standard epistolary greeting term | ইনগবা [TM REUSE — Medium] |
| love | ἀγάπη / agapē | self-giving covenantal love | — | “love” | Standard epistolary greeting term, introducing the letter’s later use of ἀγάπη for God’s love (v.21) and the “love feasts” (v.12) | নুংশিবা (nungshiba) [NEW — Medium-High]. Risk: as noted at v.21, this must be kept distinct from the romantically-coded devotional love (prem) associated with Radha-Krishna Ras Lila devotion; agapē is covenantal and morally serious, not romantic-devotional. |
| may be multiplied | πληθυνθείη / plēthyntheiē | may increase, may abound | prayer-wish for increase | ”be multiplied,” “increase,” “abound” | Standard blessing formula | হেনগৎহনবিয়ু (hengathanbiyu) [NEW — Low] |
Jude 1:24

| able (to keep) | δυναμένῳ / dynamenō | being able, having power | divine capability | ”who is able,” “who has power” | God’s own power is the ultimate basis of believers’ security — climaxes the letter’s “kept by God” theme first introduced in v.1 | পাংগল লৈবা (panggal leiba), cross-referencing baseline’s power_of_god family term তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা [NEW — High] |
| guard/keep (without stumbling) | φυλάξαι … ἀπταίστους / phylaxai … aptaistous | to guard so as to prevent falling | protective custody resulting in a specific, secure outcome | ”keep you from stumbling,” “guard you from falling” | God’s active, protective guarding is what secures believers against final failure — distinct nuance from τηρέω’s more general “keeping” | ঙাক্তোকপা (ngaktokpa) [NEW — High]. Risk: must be distinguished from believers securing their own standing through ongoing ritual devotion or maintained bhakti — this security is grounded entirely in God’s own power, echoing the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine. |
| present blameless | στῆσαι … ἀμώμους / stēsai … amōmous | to make stand … without blemish | presenting someone in a completed, faultless condition before another | ”present you blameless,” “make you stand without fault” | The climactic goal of God’s keeping work — believers presented complete and faultless before Christ’s glory at his return | মশাদাবা ওইনা লেপহনবা (mashadaba oina lephanba) [NEW — High]. Risk: must convey the completed result of God’s own sanctifying and keeping work (cf. baseline’s sanctification doctrine), not a ritual purity-check achieved through human ascetic practice, devotional service, or the ceremonial garment/body purity preparations undertaken before Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava temple worship. |
| in the presence of his glory | κατενώπιον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ / katenōpion tēs doxēs autou | directly before/in front of his glory | standing openly and directly before God’s own radiant presence | ”before his glory,” “in the presence of his glory” | The setting of this final presentation is God’s own glorious presence | মতিক চাউবগী মমাংদা [TM REUSE root — High] |
| exultation/great joy | ἀγαλλιάσει / agalliasei | intense joy, exultant rejoicing | joyful celebration, particularly appropriate to a completed salvation | ”great joy,” “exultation,” “rejoicing” | The emotional register of the final presentation — joy, not fear | হরাউ-নুংঙাইবা (harau-nungngaiba) [NEW — Low-Medium] |
Jude 1:25
| Term | Original / Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| only [God] | μόνῳ [θεῷ] / monō [theō] | to the only [God] | exclusive monotheistic affirmation | ”to the only God,” “the one God” | Reinforces the letter’s exclusivist monotheism, standing directly against both the populated Umang Lai/ancestral spirit-world of Sanamahi cosmology and the expansive avatar/deity pantheon of Manipuri Vaishnavism | তেংবাং মপু খক্তবু [TM REUSE root — Critical] |
| God | θεῷ / theō | God | the one true God | ”God” | — | তেংবাং মপু [TM REUSE — Critical] |
| Savior | σωτῆρι / sōtēri | one who saves, deliverer | God’s identity as the one who accomplishes salvation | ”Savior” | Names God (accomplished “through Jesus Christ our Lord”) as the one who saves — directly tied to the σωτηρία of v.3 | অহানবিবা (ahanbiba) [NEW — Critical], built on [TM] অহানবা. Risk: must not be confused with Krishna as a devotee’s personal saviour-liberator figure within bhakti theology, a live and specific parallel concept in Manipuri Vaishnava devotional life; God alone, through Christ’s finished historical work, is Savior. |
| through Jesus Christ our Lord | διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν / dia Iēsou Christou tou kyriou hēmōn | through Jesus Christ our Lord | the mediating agency of Christ in accomplishing salvation and receiving doxological honor | ”through Jesus Christ our Lord” | Salvation and glory both flow “through” Christ — reinforcing his full deity and mediatorial uniqueness | জিসু ক্রিস্তো মপু ইবুংগো [TM REUSE — Critical] |
| glory | δόξα / doxa | radiant honor | see baseline entry | ”glory” | First of four doxological nouns ascribed to God | মতিক চাউবা [TM REUSE — High] |
| majesty | μεγαλωσύνη / megalōsynē | greatness, majesty | sovereign grandeur | ”majesty,” “greatness” | Second doxological noun | চাউথোকপা (chauthokpa) [NEW — Medium] |
| dominion / might | κράτος / kratos | strength, dominion, might | ruling power | ”dominion,” “power,” “might” | Third doxological noun | পাংগল (panggal) [NEW — Medium]. Risk: must not be confused with শক্তি (already forbidden in baseline for power terms due to association with a maibi’s Lai Haraoba trance-power). |
| authority | ἐξουσία / exousia | right to rule, authority | legitimate governing right | ”authority,” “power” | Fourth doxological noun | অধিকার (adhikar) [NEW — Medium] |
| forever (before all time, now, and forever) | πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας / pro pantos tou aiōnos kai nyn kai eis pantas tous aiōnas | before all the age, and now, and unto all the ages | comprehensive eternity — past, present, and unending future | ”before all time, now, and forever” | God’s glory and rule are affirmed across the entirety of time, without beginning or end | মমাংদগী, হৌজিক, লোমহৌত্তবগী মথক্তা (mamangdagi, houjik, lomhouttabagi mathakta), cross-referencing লোমহৌত্তবা [NEW — Medium] |
| Amen | ἀμήν / amēn | so be it, truly | liturgical affirmation | ”Amen” | Closing liturgical affirmation | আমেন (Amen) [NEW — Low, standard transliteration] |
Full-book coverage note: Jude 1:1–25 is the entire book. There are no further chapters to analyze. All load-bearing theological terms across the whole book have been catalogued above, either as verse-by-verse entries within the core passage (1:3–23) or within this closing section covering the salutation (1:1–2) and doxology (1:24–25).
Summary of Cross-Cutting Doctrinal Risk Themes for Jude
- Contending for the Faith Once Delivered (vv.3, 20) — Critical. Requires explicit contrast with ongoing/evolving revelation frameworks (cyclical rebirth, continuing avatar-descents, maibi trance-utterance) and sensitive handling given the Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning memory.
- Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers (vv.4, 8, 10-16, 18-19) — High/Critical cluster. Requires a personal, judicial framework (ৱায়েল) rather than impersonal fate/karma framing.
- Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel v.5, angels v.6, Sodom v.7, Cain/Balaam/Korah v.11) — High. Requires OT narrative background teaching for readers with low OT literacy; angel terminology requires particular care against Sanamahi spirit-world conflation.
- Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering (vv.2, 21-23) — High/Critical cluster. Requires ৱারৈশিনবা (mercy) and চিংনরিবা (wavering) as new, carefully distinguished terms, plus theologian resolution of the vv.22-23 textual variant.
- Kept by God and Presented Blameless (vv.1, 6, 21, 24) — High cluster around থাম্বা/ঙাক্তোকপা (keep/guard) and মশাদাবা (blameless), tied to the baseline’s assurance_of_salvation and sanctification doctrines.
- Doxology and God’s Preserving Power (vv.24-25) — Critical/High cluster around অহানবিবা (Savior), reinforcing baseline’s Critical “god,” “lord,” and “salvation” terms against both live Manipuri religious traditions.
