Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Gospel of John → Manipuri
Methodology
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, and every typological pattern in the Gospel of John, chapter by chapter, first (John 1) to last (John 21). It also cross-references John’s theology against the Romans Language Package already in production for Manipuri, since both curricula share this language’s translation_memory.json and must render shared quotations, doctrines, and proper names identically.
Citation format: All citations use normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 53:1”, “John 3:16”) with Arabic numerals throughout, per the baseline’s own citation convention (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, Cross-Reference Preservation Rules).
Translation sensitivity ratings follow the baseline’s four-tier risk framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and reuse the exact Manipuri renderings recorded in translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and the John-specific 08_core_glossary.md wherever a term already exists there. New provisional renderings are marked [PROVISIONAL].
Every chapter of John (1–21) is represented below. Chapters contributing no direct OT quotation or major typological pattern are explicitly noted as “reviewed — no additional cross-reference load” rather than silently omitted.
PART 1 — Explicit Old Testament Quotations in John (formula-introduced or unmistakably direct)
| # | John Passage | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Quotation Content (sense) | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | John 1:23 | Isaiah 40:3 | John the Baptist / Isaiah | ”The voice of one crying in the wilderness: make straight the way of the Lord” | Forerunner testimony; fulfillment of prophecy | High — the wilderness “voice” motif has no ready parallel in Meitei tradition (no analog to Umang Lai grove-crying); render as historical prophetic fulfillment, not a maibi’s trance-cry. Reuse baseline প্রফেসি vocabulary: ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল |
| 2 | John 2:17 | Psalm 69:9 | The disciples, recalling David | ”Zeal for your house will consume me” | Christ’s righteous zeal for God’s house | Medium — থমোই হেনবা (zeal) already fixed in 07_semantic_analysis.md; Psalm 69 is also quoted at John 15:25, 19:28, and separately in Romans 11:9-10 — see Part 4 consistency rule below |
| 3 | John 6:31 | Exodus 16:4; Psalm 78:24 | Moses; the crowd | ”He gave them bread from heaven to eat” | Manna typology fulfilled in Christ, the true Bread of Life | Critical — anchors the first “I Am” statement (ঐ হিংবগী রুটি অসি); manna-from-heaven language sits adjacent to the descend-from-heaven collision cluster already flagged Critical in 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md |
| 4 | John 6:45 | Isaiah 54:13 | The prophets | ”They will all be taught by God” | Spirit-given inward knowledge of God, tied to the New Birth doctrine | High — connects to থাওয়াই অসেংবাদগী পোকপা (born of the Spirit) |
| 5 | John 7:38 | Composite: Isaiah 58:11; Ezekiel 47:1-9; Zechariah 14:8 | (unnamed prophetic composite) | “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” | Holy Spirit given after Christ’s glorification | High — reuses হিংবগী ঈশিং (living water, ch.4); the Ezekiel 47 temple-river image should be taught as fulfilled in the Spirit’s outpouring, not confused with any ritual river/spring site venerated in Sanamahi or Vaishnava practice |
| 6 | John 10:34 | Psalm 82:6 | (Israel’s judges, addressed as “gods”) | “I said, you are gods” | Defense of Jesus’ unique claim to divine Sonship against a charge of blasphemy | Critical — this quotation is an a fortiori legal argument, not an endorsement of a populated pantheon; must not be read as license to equate Christ’s unique deity claim with Umang Lai deity multiplicity. Render তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা claim as categorically greater than the psalm’s rhetorical “gods” |
| 7 | John 12:13 | Psalm 118:25-26 | The Passover crowd | ”Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” | Triumphal entry; messianic acclamation | High — “Hosanna” (transliterate as an untranslated exclamation, per system-prompt convention for Amen/Hallelujah); confirm regional Manipuri Bible convention before finalizing |
| 8 | John 12:15 | Zechariah 9:9 | Zion’s promised king | ”Behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt” | Messianic kingship, deliberately humble, non-military | Critical — must be distinguished from any royal-divine procession imagery associated with the historic Meitei ningthou (Pakhangba-descent kingship) or with Ras Lila’s own ceremonial royal-divine processional staging of Krishna |
| 9 | John 12:38 | Isaiah 53:1 | The Suffering Servant (Isaiah) | “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us?” | Unbelief despite clear revelation | Critical — this exact verse is also quoted in Romans 10:16; the Manipuri rendering MUST be verbatim-identical across both curricula (see Part 4 consistency rule) |
| 10 | John 12:40 | Isaiah 6:10 | Isaiah, at his commissioning | ”He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart” | Judicial hardening as a consequence of persistent unbelief | High — ties to the ৱায়েল (judgment) doctrine; must be taught as God’s righteous judicial response, not impersonal fate (ৱাইফম, already forbidden in the baseline) |
| 11 | John 13:18 | Psalm 41:9 | David, betrayed by a trusted friend | ”He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me” | Foretold betrayal (Judas) | Medium — table-fellowship betrayal idiom; render literally with a translator’s note on the covenant-meal background |
| 12 | John 15:25 | Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 | David | ”They hated me without a cause” | The world’s unwarranted hatred of Christ and, by extension, his disciples | Medium — reuses ৱায়েল/মালেম (hostile-world sense) vocabulary already flagged in ch.15 of 07_semantic_analysis.md |
| 13 | John 19:24 | Psalm 22:18 | David | ”They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots” | Precise fulfillment of crucifixion detail prophecy | High — Psalm 22 is a major messianic-suffering psalm; consistent rendering matters since Psalm 22 is widely used in Passion-related teaching across both curricula |
| 14 | John 19:28 | Psalm 69:21 | David | ”I thirst” | Fulfillment of prophetic suffering detail | Medium — third Psalm 69 quotation in John (with 2:17, 15:25); reinforce the single consistent Manipuri Psalm 69 rendering (Part 4) |
| 15 | John 19:36 | Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 | The Passover lamb regulation | ”Not one of his bones will be broken” | Christ as the true Passover Lamb, fulfilling the Exodus type | Critical — directly confirms the Lamb of God doctrine (তেংবাং মপুগী য়াওবী, ch.1); requires explicit OT Passover-lamb background teaching since neither Sanamahi nor Vaishnava tradition provides a ready bridge (see 08_core_glossary.md Lamb of God entry) |
| 16 | John 19:37 | Zechariah 12:10 | The house of David and Jerusalem | ”They will look on him whom they have pierced” | Repentant recognition of the pierced Messiah | Critical — ties directly to Christ’s Substitutionary Death doctrine; must be rendered so as not to suggest a wounded-and-revived deity within a cyclical avatāra framework, but a unique historical event of judgment borne and mourned |
PART 2 — Old Testament Allusions and Typological Patterns (not formula-quoted, but structurally load-bearing)
| John Passage | OT Type / Allusion | Related Character(s) | Typological / Allusive Connection | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1-3 | Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning…”) | (Creator God) | John deliberately opens with the same three words as Genesis, casting the Word as the agent of creation itself | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Critical — তেংবাং মপুগী ৱাহৈ (the Word) must retain its personal, creative-agent sense from its very first line; see 08_core_glossary.md Logos entry |
| John 1:14 | Exodus 33:7-11; 40:34-38 (“tabernacled/dwelt among us”) | Moses, the tabernacle | God’s tabernacling presence with Israel now fulfilled personally and permanently in the incarnate Word | Deity/Pre-existence; Incarnation | Critical — requires OT tabernacle background; distinguish from a deity’s temporary festival appearance (Ras Lila enactment) |
| John 1:14,17 | Exodus 34:6 (“abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness”) | Moses, at Sinai | ”Grace and truth” echoes God’s OT self-revelation of covenant character | Grace (baseline-inherited) | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
| John 1:18 | Exodus 33:20 (“no one may see me and live”) | Moses | ”No one has ever seen God” — the Son alone makes the unseen Father known | Deity of Christ; Unity of Father and Son | High |
| John 1:29,36 | Exodus 12 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (“led like a lamb to slaughter”) | Moses; Isaiah’s Suffering Servant | ”Lamb of God” fuses Passover-substitution and servant-suffering typology | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | High — see Lamb of God entry, 08_core_glossary.md |
| John 1:51 | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder) | Jacob | Christ himself is the meeting-place of heaven and earth, replacing Jacob’s ladder-vision | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Critical — connects to the descend/ascend-from-heaven collision cluster; the ladder image (angels ascending/descending) must not be assimilated to any Sanamahi cosmological connector between the human and Umang Lai/ancestral-spirit realms |
| John 2:19-22 | (typological, no OT citation) — “destroy this temple” | — | Christ’s body as the true temple, destroyed and raised in three days | Resurrection of Christ | Critical (baseline-inherited resurrection root) |
| John 3:5 | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (“I will sprinkle clean water…and put my Spirit within you”) | Ezekiel | New-covenant promise of Spirit-wrought inward cleansing and renewal, the OT background for “born of water and the Spirit” | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Critical — see 07_semantic_analysis.md John 3:5 entry; this is the single most important OT background text for the whole core passage and should be taught explicitly alongside John 3:1-21 |
| John 3:8 | (allusion) Ezekiel 37:9-14 (breath/spirit and the dry bones) | Ezekiel | The Spirit’s life-giving breath, sovereign and invisible, echoes the valley-of-dry-bones vision | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | High |
| John 3:14 | Numbers 21:4-9 (bronze serpent) | Moses; the wilderness generation | Christ’s crucifixion typologically fulfills the raised bronze serpent: looking in faith brings life from what was itself an image of judgment | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | CRITICAL — the single most Manipuri-specific typological risk in the whole book. See dedicated note in Part 3 below (Pakhangba collision) |
| John 3:13-14; 6:33,38,41-42,50-51,58; 8:23 | (typological/structural) Daniel 7:13-14 (Son of Man) | Daniel | Descent/ascent language builds the Son of Man’s heavenly-origin claim across many chapters | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | CRITICAL — see the full descend/ascend-collision unit already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md |
| John 4:5-6,12 | Genesis 33:19; Joshua 24:32 (Jacob’s well/field at Sychar) | Jacob | Christ offers living water superior to the patriarch’s well | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | Medium |
| John 4:21-24 | (typological contrast) Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (the one place of sacrifice); 2 Kings 17:24-41 (Samaritan cultic background) | — | True worship transcends both Jerusalem and Gerizim | God’s Love for the World; Unity themes | High — see খুরুম্জবা (worship) entry, 08_core_glossary.md |
| John 5:1-9 | (typological contrast) Exodus 20:8-11 (Sabbath command) | Moses | Christ’s Sabbath healing asserts his authority as Sabbath’s Lord, provoking the “equal with God” controversy | Deity of Christ | Critical — see John 5:18 entry, 07_semantic_analysis.md |
| John 5:39,45-47 | Deuteronomy 18:15 (“a prophet like me…him you shall listen to”) | Moses | Moses himself is said to have written of Christ; the whole Torah is read as pointing to him | Fulfillment of Prophecy (baseline-inherited doctrine) | High (baseline-inherited) |
| John 6:31-58 | Exodus 16 (manna); Psalm 78:24; Isaiah 55:1-2 (invitation to eat/drink freely) | Moses; the wilderness generation | Extended manna typology — Christ as the true, permanent bread from heaven | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ; The Seven “I Am” Statements | Critical (see Part 1, #3 above) |
| John 7:2,37 | Leviticus 23:33-43 (Feast of Tabernacles/Booths) | — | The Feast of Tabernacles’ water-drawing ceremony provides the setting for Christ’s “living water” invitation | Eternal Life; Holy Spirit | High |
| John 8:12; 9:5 | Isaiah 9:2; 42:6-7; 49:6; 60:1-3 (light to the nations) | Isaiah’s Servant/Messiah | ”I am the light of the world” fulfills OT light-to-the-nations prophecy | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | CRITICAL — see মমাং (light) entry, Atiya Sidaba/Ras Lila radiance collision, 08_core_glossary.md |
| John 8:31-59 | Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1-6; 17:1-8 (Abrahamic covenant) | Abraham | ”Abraham’s children” debate; “before Abraham was, I AM” | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | CRITICAL — Genesis 15:6 (Abraham “believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness”) is the baseline’s own anchor text for Romans 4 and the imputed_righteousness entry; this John passage should be explicitly cross-taught with Romans 4:3 for doctrinal consistency (see Part 4) |
| John 8:58 | Exodus 3:14 (“I AM WHO I AM”) | Moses, at the burning bush | The absolute, unqualified “I am” claims the divine name itself | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Deity of Christ | CRITICAL — mandatory translator’s note required, per 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md |
| John 9:7 | Isaiah 8:6 (“the waters of Shiloah that flow gently”) | Isaiah | The Pool of Siloam’s name (“Sent”) is explained by John as pointing to Christ, the One Sent | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; healing sign | Medium |
| John 9:1-41 | Isaiah 35:5; 42:7,16 (opening blind eyes) | Isaiah’s Messianic Servant | The healing of the man born blind fulfills a specific messianic-sign expectation | The Seven “I Am” Statements (light); Judgment/Belief | High |
| John 10:1-18 | Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34:1-16,23; Isaiah 40:11 | David; Ezekiel; Isaiah | Christ as the Good Shepherd fulfills and surpasses the OT shepherd-king/shepherd-God typology, replacing Israel’s failed shepherds (Ezekiel 34) | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Christ’s Substitutionary Death | High — see য়াও চৌথোকপা ফবা entry, 08_core_glossary.md; requires explicit OT shepherd-king background given pastoral imagery’s cultural distance from Manipur’s rice-agrarian economy |
| John 11:25 | Daniel 12:2; Ezekiel 37:1-14 | Daniel; Ezekiel | ”I am the resurrection and the life” fulfills OT resurrection hope in Christ’s own person | Eternal Life; Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Critical (baseline-inherited resurrection root) |
| John 12:23-24 | (typological/agricultural) — no direct OT citation | — | The grain of wheat dying to bear fruit patterns Christ’s death and the pattern of discipleship | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Medium |
| John 12:32,34 | Isaiah 52:13 (the Servant “high and lifted up”) | Isaiah’s Suffering Servant | ”Lifted up” deliberately echoes the Servant Song’s exaltation-through-suffering paradox | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | High — connect to the বাংজিনবা double-sense entry already flagged Critical/High in 07_semantic_analysis.md |
| John 13:1-17 | (typological) — servant/slave foot-washing custom | — | Christ enacts the posture of the lowest household servant, embodying self-giving love | God’s Love for the World | Medium |
| John 15:1-8 | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 19:10-14 | Israel (as vineyard/vine) | “I am the TRUE vine” — Christ fulfills and replaces Israel’s own vine-identity, which had produced only wild/bad fruit in the prophets’ indictments | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Critical — see অচুম্বা লৈহাও entry, 08_core_glossary.md; the OT vineyard=Israel background is essential and must be explicitly taught, since viticulture itself is culturally distant |
| John 17:1-5,24 | Proverbs 8:22-31 (Wisdom’s pre-existence, “before the beginning of the earth”) | (Wisdom personified) | Possible sapiential-background allusion reinforcing the Son’s pre-creation glory-sharing with the Father | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | High |
| John 17:6-19 | Exodus 28-29; Leviticus 16 (high priestly consecration/intercession) | Aaron | The whole prayer functions typologically as a High Priestly Prayer, Christ interceding for his own as Israel’s high priest once did on the Day of Atonement | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Holy Spirit as Counselor (intercession theme) | High |
| John 18:1 | 2 Samuel 15:23,30 (David crossing the Kidron, fleeing Absalom, weeping) | David | A deliberate typological echo: the greater Son of David crosses the same valley toward his own suffering, but in voluntary obedience rather than flight | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Davidic Covenant (baseline-inherited) | Medium |
| John 18:14 | (irony, not direct citation) — cf. Leviticus 16 substitution logic | Caiaphas | Caiaphas’s cynical political calculation (“better that one man die for the people”) is narrated by John as an unwitting true prophecy of substitutionary atonement | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | High — must be taught as literary/theological irony (a hostile witness speaking truth despite himself, paralleling John 5:18’s “equal with God” accusation) |
| John 19:2-3 | Isaiah 50:6; 53:3-5 (mocking, spitting, marring) | Isaiah’s Suffering Servant | The crown of thorns and purple robe mockery fulfills Servant-Song humiliation typology even as it ironically proclaims true kingship | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | High |
| John 20:1 | Genesis 1:1-5 (the “first day”) | — | The resurrection on “the first day of the week” is read by the church as a new-creation marker, echoing Genesis’ first day of light | Resurrection of Christ | Medium — avoid collapsing this into any cyclical calendar-renewal festival association (e.g. Lai Haraoba’s own seasonal renewal timing) |
| John 20:28 | Psalm 110:1; Isaiah 9:6 (“Mighty God”) | David; Isaiah | Thomas’s confession fulfills the OT’s own scattered but real testimony to a coming divine king | Deity of Christ | CRITICAL (baseline-inherited; see 08_core_glossary.md) |
| John 21:15-17 | Ezekiel 34:11-16,23; Psalm 23 | Ezekiel; David | ”Feed my sheep” reapplies the shepherd-restoration promise of Ezekiel 34 to Peter’s pastoral commissioning | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Good Shepherd continuity) | Medium |
PART 3 — Dedicated Note: The Bronze Serpent Typology (John 3:14) and the Pakhangba Collision
This typology receives a dedicated note because it is the single Manipuri-specific cross-reference risk with no parallel anywhere in the Romans baseline.
- OT source: Numbers 21:4-9 — Israel’s rebellion brings venomous serpents as judgment; God commands Moses to make a bronze serpent and raise it on a pole; whoever looks at it in faith lives.
- John’s typological use: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14) — the serpent is an image of the very judgment it remedies; salvation comes through looking to what God provided, not through venerating the serpent-image itself.
- Manipuri collision: Pakhangba, the ancestral serpent-deity of Sanamahi cosmology (elder-brother relationship to Sanamahi, per the baseline’s own dual-tradition notes), is an object of positive, ongoing ancestral-divine veneration and the traditional legitimating source of Meitei royal lineage (the historic ningthou’s claimed descent from Pakhangba).
- Required handling: Teaching materials built on John 3:1-21 (the core passage) must present Numbers 21 background explicitly before reaching John 3:14, and must state plainly that the bronze serpent is (a) a divinely-commanded judgment-remedy image, not a deity; (b) the object of typological “looking,” not veneration in itself; (c) never to be conflated with Pakhangba’s ancestral-divine status. This is a Critical, human-theologian-reviewed teaching point, not merely a lexical one — no single word-substitution resolves it; only explicit contrastive instruction does.
PART 4 — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum (Same Language, Shared Language Package)
Because Manipuri’s translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json are shared across both curricula, every quotation or doctrine below must render identically in both the Romans and John curricula.
| Shared Element | Romans Location | John Location | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report?”) | Romans 10:16 | John 12:38 | Mandatory verbatim match. Same Manipuri rendering of this exact quotation must be used in both curricula; a single shared translation-memory entry should be created (see Recommendation 1 below) |
| Psalm 69 (multiple verses: 69:4, 69:9, 69:21) | Romans 11:9-10 (Psalm 69:22-23) | John 2:17 (69:9); 15:25 (69:4); 19:28 (69:21) | Use one consistent Manipuri rendering convention for “Psalm 69” citations across both curricula, even though different verses are quoted; do not allow stylistic drift between the two documents |
| Isaiah 28:16 (“whoever believes in him will not be put to shame”) | Romans 9:33; 10:11 | (thematic parallel only — not directly quoted in John, but see John 3:16/3:18 “whoever believes”) | Theme-level consistency: the baseline’s থাজবা (faith/believe) verb must be the fixed rendering in both “whoever believes” formulas |
| Genesis 15:6 (Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness) | Romans 4:3 (baseline “imputed_righteousness” anchor text) | John 8:56 (Abraham rejoiced to see Christ’s day — thematic, not quoted) | Both curricula should cross-reference this same Genesis text; Manipuri রেন্ডারিং of Genesis 15:6 itself should be created once and shared, since the baseline currently only paraphrases it in translation_memory.json notes |
| ”Jesus is Lord” confession | Romans 10:9-10 (fixed, verbatim-consistency rule already in baseline) | John 20:28 (“My Lord and my God”) | Both are climactic Lordship confessions using মপু ইবুংগো / তেংবাং মপু; extend the baseline’s existing Romans 10:9-10 fixed-rendering rule to cover John 20:28 as a matched pair |
| Grace (χάρις) contrasted with bhakti-responsive কৃপা | Romans 3:24; 4:4-5; 11:5-6 | John 1:14,16-17 (“grace upon grace”) | Use identical মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং rendering; John 1:16-17 is this term’s first appearance in the whole Bible narrative sequence as John’s readers will encounter it, so its introduction here should match the baseline’s Romans framing exactly |
| Resurrection (ἀνάστασις) | Romans 1:4; 4:25; 6:4-5; 8:11 | John 5:29; 6:39-54; 11:24-25; 20-21 | Identical সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা rendering; never পুনর্জন্ম, in either curriculum |
| Adoption / children of God | Romans 8:15-17,23 (legal adoption image, মচা ওইনা লৌবা) | John 1:12-13 (organic new-birth image, তেংবাং মপুগী মচা) | Not a conflict but a complementary-images rule: teaching materials referencing both curricula should explicitly teach these as two compatible biblical pictures (legal adoption + organic new birth) of the same reality, never merging the two Manipuri terms into one |
| Spirit-given assurance / “no condemnation” | Romans 8:1,28-39 | John 3:18 (“not condemned”); 5:24 (“passed from death to life”) | Consistent ৱায়েল (judgment/condemnation) vocabulary; both curricula teach assurance grounded in Christ’s finished work, not ongoing devotional/ritual standing |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles / universal scope | Romans 3:29-30; 10:12; 11:17-24 | John 4 (Samaritan woman); 10:16 (“other sheep… one flock, one shepherd”); 12:20-24 (Greeks seeking Jesus) | Both curricula affirm no ethnic/clan barrier to the gospel — a point of particular sensitivity given Manipur’s contemporary inter-community relations, per the baseline’s own universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine note |
| Election / sovereign calling / “draw” | Romans 8:28-30; 9:11-12; 11:29 (তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা) | John 6:44 (“the Father draws”); 12:32 (“I will draw all people”); 15:16,19 (“I chose you”) | Identical root terms (থিংথোকপা for “draw”; তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা for “chosen”); never ৱাইফম (fate) in either curriculum |
| Christ’s substitutionary/sacrificial death | Romans 3:25 (propitiation); 5:8; 8:32 | John 1:29,36 (Lamb of God); 10:11,15,17-18 (lay down his life); 19:36 (Passover-lamb fulfillment) | Both curricula must teach a completed, non-repeatable, non-ritually-supplementable atonement; John’s “it is finished” (John 19:30, মপুং ফাউরে) should be cross-taught with Romans’ grace/imputed-righteousness Critical cautions against ritual-merit frameworks |
| Deity and Sonship of Christ | Romans 1:3-4; 9:5 | John 1:1,14,18; 5:18; 10:30-33; 20:28 | Identical তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা and related Critical-tier vocabulary; John supplies far more extensive textual support for this doctrine than Romans and should be taught as the fuller Christological foundation underlying Romans’ more compressed claims |
| Holy Spirit’s personal, indwelling presence | Romans 8:9-16,26-27 | John 3:5-8; 14:16-17,26; 15:26; 16:7-15 | Identical থাওয়াই অসেংবা, always in full; John’s Paraclete/Counselor material (পাংজিনবিরকপা থাওয়াই অসেংবা) substantially deepens Romans 8’s more compressed Spirit-of-adoption teaching and should be cross-taught as the same divine Person doing complementary work |
Recommendation for translation_memory.json (to be actioned in Phase 2 preparation)
- Add a shared entry for the Isaiah 53:1 quotation text (currently absent as its own entry; only the doctrine terms it touches are recorded) so that Romans 10:16 and John 12:38 draw from one canonical Manipuri rendering.
- Add a shared entry for Genesis 15:6, since both curricula depend on it (Romans 4 directly; John 8 thematically) and no fixed Manipuri rendering of the verse itself currently exists in translation memory.
- Extend the baseline’s existing Romans 10:9-10 “verbatim consistency required” rule (in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md) explicitly to cover John 20:28, given their shared confessional weight.
PART 5 — Chapters Reviewed with No Additional Cross-Reference Load
The following chapters were reviewed in full for OT quotation, allusion, and typology beyond what is already captured above; no further distinct cross-reference entries are required:
- John 21 — beyond the Ezekiel 34/Psalm 23 shepherd-restoration echo in 21:15-17 already tabled above, the remainder of the chapter (miraculous catch of fish, the “beloved disciple” note, closing authentication) introduces no further OT quotation or typological pattern requiring a distinct entry.
- John 16 — the Spirit’s convicting work and “sorrow turned to joy” material is thematically continuous with the Counselor doctrine already tabled under chapter 14 and introduces no new distinct OT citation.
- John 13 (beyond 13:18, already tabled) — the foot-washing narrative and the “new commandment” (13:34) reuse already-tabled love/servant themes without introducing further distinct OT quotation.
PART 6 — Messianic References Summary Table
| Messianic Title/Claim | John Passages | OT Root | Curriculum Doctrine | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Messiah/Christ (explicitly glossed) | John 1:20,25,41; 4:25,29; 7:26-31,41-42; 9:22; 10:24; 11:27; 20:31 | Daniel 9:25-26; Psalm 2:2; general OT messianic hope | Messianic Promise (baseline-inherited) | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
| Son of David / kingly line | John 7:42 (crowd debate) | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 89:3-4; Isaiah 11:1 | Davidic Covenant (baseline-inherited) | High |

Summary Observation
John’s cross-reference structure differs from the Romans baseline in one important respect: where Romans mostly cites the Old Testament in dense, compressed argumentative catenae (e.g., Romans 3:10-18), John embeds its Old Testament material inside extended narrative typology (the manna, the bronze serpent, the vine, the shepherd, the Passover lamb, the temple). This means the Manipuri curriculum’s cross-reference teaching for John requires more extensive standalone Old Testament background instruction per passage than Romans did, since the narrative form does not always signal to a low-Old-Testament-literacy reader that a background text is even being invoked (per the system prompt’s stated assumption that “Old Testament narrative literacy is low”). The bronze serpent (John 3:14) and true vine (John 15:1-8) typologies carry the highest combined translation-sensitivity load of the whole book and should receive dedicated background-teaching units in Phase 2/3 curriculum design, alongside the descend/ascend-from-heaven Critical cluster already flagged in prior Phase 1 documents.
