Linguistic Gap Analysis

06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Galatians (Full Book)

English → Manipuri | Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix, Semantic Crowding, Transliteration Strategy, Ranked Ambiguities

Purpose

This document performs the linguistic gap analysis required before Galatians-specific terms may be added to the Romans-baseline Language Package. It answers three questions for every load-bearing concept in Galatians 1–16 [1–6]:

  1. Does an adequate Manipuri term already exist (in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json), and if so, does Galatians’ argument stress it in a way the baseline notes did not anticipate?
  2. Where Manipuri has NO adequate existing term, what is the best available strategy — coin a descriptive compound, transliterate, or borrow with fencing?
  3. Where a Manipuri word already carries strong meaning inside Sanamahism or Manipuri Gaudiya Vaishnavism (the two live, currently practiced traditions documented in the baseline), what specific “fencing” (translator notes, contrastive teaching, deliberate avoidance) is required to prevent the biblical sense collapsing into the existing cultural referent?

This analysis covers the full book of Galatians, chapters 1 through 6, not only the core passage (2:15–21). Findings here are load-bearing input to 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md (already drafted; this document supplies the gap-analysis reasoning that justifies the choices recorded there) and must not contradict the Romans baseline.

Section 1 — Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

For each of the fourteen curriculum doctrines: the Manipuri vocabulary currently available, its specific weaknesses for this doctrine’s argument in Galatians, and the recommended strategy.

#DoctrineAvailable Manipuri term(s)Weakness for Galatians’ specific argumentRecommended strategy
1Justification by Faithঅচুম্বা ওইহনবা (justification, REUSE); থাজবা (faith, REUSE); য়াথাংগী থবক (works of the law, NEW)Baseline Romans notes treat justification primarily against a bhakti-merit backdrop. Galatians 2:16 triples the verb (δικαιοῦται / δικαιωθῶμεν / δικαιωθήσεται) in one verse and sets it in explicit antithesis to a NAMED counter-category (ἔργα νόμου) that Romans states more diffusely. Manipuri has no single word covering “law-observance-as-righteousness-basis” as compactly as ἔργα νόμου.Reuse অচুম্বা ওইহনবা verbatim (cross-curriculum consistency mandate). Coin য়াথাংগী থবক as the fixed antithesis term, built transparently on baseline য়াথাং so the contrast is visible to a reader who already has the Romans package. Do NOT vary the wording across the three occurrences in 2:16.
2The True Gospel versus False Gospelsনুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel, REUSE); অতোপ্পা পাউ (false gospel, NEW); শাপ ফাংবা (anathema, NEW)Baseline “gospel” entry addresses generic confusion with festival “good news.” Galatians 1:6-9 requires the ADDITIONAL move of naming and then cursing a rival message using the SAME semantic field (good news) without dignifying it with the same word. No existing Manipuri term draws this fine a line.Deliberately withhold নুংঙাই- (joyful/good) from the false-gospel term (অতোপ্পা পাউ, “a different/other message”) so lexical form itself signals falsity. Pair with শাপ ফাংবা and a mandatory translator note per Section 5 below.
3Paul’s Apostleshipতবিদগী থাবিরকপা (apostle, REUSE); ফোংদোকখ্রে (revealed, NEW); পোকপগী মতুংইন্না (by nature/birth, NEW)Romans’ apostle entry flags a general risk of collapsing into a “religious specialist” role (maiba/maibi). Galatians 1 makes a much sharper, more specific claim: NOT from man, NOT through man, but direct divine commissioning (1:1, 1:11-12) — a stronger claim than Romans required.Reuse তবিদগী থাবিরকপা but require every Galatians 1 occurrence to co-occur with an explicit “not from man” qualifier in the surrounding text/notes, and use ফোংদোকখ্রে (built on the baseline’s prophecy root) for “revealed” to keep the direct-revelation claim visibly distinct from human instruction.
4Law and Graceয়াথাং (law, REUSE); মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (grace, REUSE); মালেমগী থাওয়াইশিং (elemental spirits, NEW); নুমিৎ থা চহি… (calendar observance, NEW)Romans’ grace-vs-works argument is largely about human moral effort. Galatians 4:3-10 extends the argument to COSMIC/RITUAL bondage (στοιχεῖα, calendar observance) — a category Romans never raises and for which no baseline term exists at all.Coin মালেমগী থাওয়াইশিং with maximum fencing (see Section 3); treat গ্রেস argument in Galatians as Romans’ argument PLUS this cosmic-bondage extension, not a simple restatement.
5Crucified with Christক্রুস (cross, transliterated, NEW); ক্রিস্তোগা লোয়ননা ক্রুসদা হাত্তুনা সিখ্রে (NEW)This is a genuine vocabulary GAP: no Romans baseline entry addresses union with Christ’s death as a personal, completed-past-with-continuing-effect event. Neither Sanamahi ancestor-veneration nor Vaishnava bhakti has a “dying with the deity” category — bhakti aims at nearness/absorption (already flagged as forbidden framing for “salvation” in the baseline), not co-death.Full descriptive compound required; no single word suffices. Perfect-tense force (“has been crucified, remains so”) must be carried by an auxiliary/aspect marker in Manipuri grammar, confirmed by native-speaker review, not assumed from the verb root alone. This is the single most doctrinally load-bearing NEW coinage in the curriculum (it sits inside the core passage, 2:19-20).
6The Abrahamic Covenant and Promiseৱারেপ্পা (covenant, REUSE); ৱাশাক্না পীবা (promise, NEW); অব্রাহামগী চা-চাহি (seed of Abraham, NEW)Romans uses covenant/David-lineage language but never needs to distinguish COVENANT from PROMISE as two sequential legal categories where the timing of one relative to the other is the entire point of the argument (3:15-18: promise given 430 years before the law, therefore not annulled by it). Manipuri ৱারেপ্পা alone cannot carry this chronological-priority argument.Introduce ৱাশাক্না পীবা as a distinct term from ৱারেপ্পা and require translator notes at every occurrence in Galatians 3 stating which came first and why that sequence matters to Paul’s argument.
7The Law’s Purposeয়াথাং (REUSE); অঙাং য়েংশিনবা মিনায় (guardian/tutor, NEW); মদাংদা লেপ্পা মী (mediator, NEW); শাপ (curse of law, NEW)Baseline “law” entry only guards against ধর্ম. Galatians 3:19-25 requires POSITIVE, nuanced vocabulary for the law’s limited, temporary, protective-custodial function — a much more constructive role than Romans’ predominantly diagnostic (“law brings knowledge of sin”) treatment.Coin অঙাং য়েংশিনবা মিনায় specifically to carry TEMPORARINESS, explicitly fenced against গুরু (see Section 3). Coin মদাংদা লেপ্পা মী for mediator, fenced against maibi ritual-intermediary role.
8Adoption and Sonshipমচা ওইনা লৌবা (adoption, REUSE); লান ফংবা মচা (heir, NEW); আব্বা (Abba, REUSE)Romans’ adoption entry already flags the yumnak/clan-lineage gap. Galatians 4:1-7 adds a NEW legal step (heir, κληρονόμος) that Romans’ entry does not name at all, and links calling someone “no longer a slave but a son” directly to inheritance in one sentence — the two ideas cannot be separated in teaching as they can in Romans.Reuse মচা ওইনা লৌবা; add লান ফংবা মচা as an inseparable companion term, always taught as a single doctrinal unit, not two independent glossary entries.
9Freedom in Christননথোকপা (freedom, NEW); দাসত্ত ওইবা (slavery, NEW); মিনায়শিংগী লুপা (yoke of slavery, NEW)GENUINE GAP absent from Romans entirely: Romans never needed a dedicated “freedom” doctrine term. Galatians 5:1 makes freedom itself the letter’s summarizing banner statement. Manipuri’s most natural high-register equivalent, স্বাধীনতা, is a live political term in a region with active autonomy/insurgency discourse.Coin ননথোকপা specifically to avoid the political-loanword register of স্বাধীনতা. Escalate to Critical (already reflected in bible_term_registry.json) and require anchoring language (“freedom from sin’s bondage and the law’s condemnation”) at every occurrence — see Section 5, ranked #2.
10Circumcision and the New Creationলি কোকপা (circumcision, NEW); অনৌবা শেমগৎপা (new creation, NEW)Circumcision has NO Meitei ritual parallel (a genuine vocabulary gap, not a crowding risk), so risk here is entirely doctrinal-instructional, not lexical-collision. New creation, by contrast, sits directly adjacent to the baseline’s forbidden “rebirth” (পুনর্জন্ম) risk already flagged for resurrection.Use লি কোকপা with instructional scaffolding explaining the OT sign from scratch (low OT literacy assumed). Fence অনৌবা শেমগৎপা explicitly against পুনর্জন্ম per Section 3.
11Flesh versus Spiritথাওয়াই অসেংবা (Holy Spirit, REUSE); হাকচাংগী পান্দম / মীওই খুদিংমক / হাকচাংদা (three flesh senses, NEW)GENUINE STRUCTURAL GAP: Greek σάρξ carries three unrelated senses across the letter (2:16 humanity-idiom; 2:20 neutral-physical; ch. 5 moral-corrupted-nature) and Manipuri has no single word spanning all three the way σάρξ does — this is a POSITIVE feature for translation (it forces necessary disambiguation) but a risk if translators default to one Manipuri word for all three.Lock three SEPARATE keyed entries (flesh_humanity, flesh_neutral, flesh_moral) into translation memory, per the cross-cutting risk note already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md; never merge them under one rendering.
12Fruit of the Spiritথাওয়াই অসেংবগী মহেই (fruit of the Spirit, NEW) + 9 sub-termsNo baseline vice/virtue-list vocabulary exists at all — full gap. Two sub-items carry specific collision risk (joy/হরাওবা vs. Lai Haraoba; self-control vs. Vaishnava ascetic tapasya-merit).See full sub-term table in 08_core_glossary.md; this document flags joy_fruit and self_control_fruit for Section 3 fencing below.
13Faith Working through Loveথাজবানা নুংশিবগী মখাদা থবক তৌবা (NEW)No existing compact Manipuri idiom for “faith expressed through love” as a THIRD WAY between legalism and license — this is Paul’s uniquely Galatians-specific positive formula, entirely absent from Romans.Full descriptive compound required; fence explicitly against ভক্তিগী সেবা (bhakti devotional-service love, a merit-building category) at every occurrence.
14Bearing One Another’s Burdensঅমাগা অমাগা য়াম্বা পুবা (NEW); থাজবগী ইমুং (household of faith, NEW)Low collision risk; genuine POSITIVE resonance opportunity with existing Meitei communal mutual-labor customs (lom/mutual-aid work groups), which should be leveraged in lesson design without theological distortion.Coin descriptively; flag for native speaker review to confirm the most natural idiom for communal mutual support already exists in everyday (non-religious) Manipuri and can be borrowed safely.

Section 2 — Missing Vocabulary Map

These concepts have no existing Manipuri lexical item at all — neither a Christian-tradition term (absent from the Romans baseline) nor a borrowable term from Sanamahi or Vaishnava vocabulary. They require fresh descriptive coinage, confirmed by theologian/native-speaker review before Phase 2 use.

ConceptGap typeCoinage strategy
Crucified with Christ (συνεσταύρωμαι)Total gap — no “co-death with a deity” category in either living traditionFull descriptive compound on ক্রুস (transliterated “cross”) + baseline সিবা (die) root; perfect-aspect marking confirmed by native speaker
New creation (καινὴ κτίσις)Adjacent gap — a one-time inaugurated order, not covered by any existing renewal/rebirth term that isn’t already forbiddenDescriptive compound: অনৌবা (new) + শেমগৎপা (created/made); explicit fence against পুনর্জন্ম
Elemental spirits (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου)Total gap for the ABSTRACT theological category, though the CONCRETE referents (spirit-beings) are over-populated in Sanamahi cosmologyDescriptive: মালেম (world/cosmos) + থাওয়াইশিং (spirits, plural); heaviest fencing requirement in the curriculum (Section 3)
Redeemed / bought back (ἐξαγοράζω)Total gap — no commercial-ransom metaphor currently attached to a spiritual referent in Manipuri Christian usageলৌথোকপা (“take back/reclaim”), explicitly not মুক্তি
Guardian/tutor (παιδαγωγός)Total gap — nearest cultural role (guru) has the OPPOSITE temporal quality (lifelong vs. temporary)Descriptive: অঙাং (child) + য়েংশিনবা (watch over/supervise) + মিনায় (servant)
Mediator (μεσίτης)Partial gap — nearest cultural role (maibi as ritual go-between) carries wrong ongoing-ritual connotationDescriptive: মদাংদা (in between) + লেপ্পা (standing) + মী (person)
Heir (κληρονόμος)Partial gap — inheritance exists in yumnak custom but is birth-based, not adoption-basedলান ফংবা মচা (“child who receives the estate”), taught jointly with adoption
Promise vs. covenant distinction (ἐπαγγελία vs. διαθήκη)Structural gap — Manipuri has one strong covenant-adjacent word (ৱারেপ্পা) but no natural second term for a legally prior, unilateral pledgeৱাশাক্না পীবা coined as a distinct term, glossed relationally to ৱারেপ্পা in every use
Bewitched (ἐβασκάνατε) / evil-eye idiomInverse problem: TOO MUCH existing vocabulary (evil-eye belief is a rich, active folk category), none of it neutralPrefer rhetorical/idiomatic paraphrase (করিগি অসুম্না অপাঙ্গবা ওইরবা, “how were you so deceived/led astray”) over any literal evil-eye lexeme, to avoid validating literal sorcery-accusation reading
Sorcery/witchcraft as a vice-list item (φαρμακεία)Same inverse problem as aboveDescriptive পericrisis phrase (অরাবা থাওয়াইগী থবক, “harmful spirit-work”) rather than a loaded tantra/jadu loanword
Three-way flesh disambiguation (σάρξ)Structural/grammatical gap, not lexical — Manipuri has adequate words for each SENSE individually but no single word spanning all three the way σάρξ doesThree fixed, separately keyed renderings (see Section 1, row 11)
Law of Christ (νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ)Gap created by Paul’s own paradoxical re-use of νόμος after dismantling itFull descriptive compound naming Christ’s pattern of love explicitly, never bare য়াথাং

Section 3 — Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing

These Manipuri words or word-families are already occupied by strong, currently-practiced meanings within Sanamahism or Manipuri Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Reusing them for Galatians’ theological vocabulary — even where they are the “obvious” choice — risks the biblical sense collapsing into the existing cultural referent. Each entry below specifies the exact fencing action required.

Manipuri word/rootExisting occupant of the semantic spaceGalatians term at risk of collapsing into itFencing strategy
শক্তি (shakti)Maibi’s oracular/trance power at Lai Haraoba; in the wider regional Shakta-Vaishnava overlap, goddess-powerστοιχεῖα (elemental spirits, 4:3/4:9); also relevant to baseline’s power_of_godNEVER use শক্তি for elemental spirits — doing so would seem to CONFIRM maibi power as a real cosmic force rather than expose it as the very bondage Christ frees believers from. Use মালেমগী থাওয়াইশিং instead, with a mandatory theologian-reviewed note at 4:9 clarifying Paul addresses a category of bondage, not a blanket verdict on Meitei cultural identity.
কৃপা (kripa)Krishna’s bhakti-responsive favor toward a devoted follower — a live, well-developed devotional conceptχάρις (grace), especially Galatians 2:21 and 5:4Already fenced in the Romans baseline; Galatians INTENSIFIES the requirement because 2:21 and 5:4 are among the sharpest grace-vs-works statements in either letter. Every occurrence in Galatians 2–5 must carry the contrastive note.
স্বাধীনতা (swadhinota)Contemporary political independence/autonomy vocabulary, live in Manipur’s insurgency and inter-community discourseἐλευθερία (freedom), 2:4, 5:1, 5:13Total avoidance. Use coined ননথোকপা instead, anchored every time to “freedom from sin’s bondage and the law’s condemnation,” never left to resonate with political self-determination. This is the single newest risk category the Galatians curriculum introduces beyond the Romans baseline.
হরাওবা (haraoba, “rejoicing/merriment”)Second half of “Lai Haraoba,” the major Sanamahi festival name (“merriment of the gods”)χαρά (joy, fruit of the Spirit, 5:22)Avoid হরাওবা; use নুংঙাইবা instead, keeping the lexical family aligned with the baseline’s নুংঙাইবগী পাউ (gospel) rather than risking a festival-name association.
গুরু (guru)The lifelong, honored teacher-disciple (guru-shishya) bond central to Vaishnava discipleshipπαιδαγωγός (guardian/tutor of the law, 3:24-25)Reject গুরু outright — its defining feature (permanence/lifelong honor) is the EXACT OPPOSITE of Paul’s point (the law’s guardianship was always temporary, ending when faith came). Use the coined descriptive compound instead and stress temporariness in every occurrence.
শাপ (shap, “curse”)The “sage’s curse” motif well-known from regional Hindu mythology; also folk ritual curse-and-removal practiceἀνάθεμα (1:8-9) and κατάρα (3:10-13) — two distinct Greek concepts sharing one Manipuri wordBoth uses require a translator note clarifying this is GOD’S OWN judicial verdict pronounced through Scripture/his apostle, not an impersonal magical curse-formula and not something addressed by any ritual curse-removal practice. The two applications (apostolic pronouncement vs. the law’s inherent penalty) must be distinguished from each other in addition to being fenced from folk religion.
জাদু / তন্ত্র-মন্ত্রHeavily Hindu-tantra-loaded loanwords for magical/occult practiceφαρμακεία (sorcery, vice list, 5:20)Reject both loanwords; use the descriptive অরাবা থাওয়াইগী থবক instead, with explicit pastoral framing that this condemns a specific harmful practice-category, not Sanamahi ritual practice (maibi/maiba roles) wholesale — a real risk of the term being weaponized in inter-community relations if handled carelessly.
ধর্ম (dharma)The Hindu-derived cosmic/religious-duty category absorbed into Meitei religious vocabulary through 18th-century Vaishnavizationνόμος (law) and its Galatians-specific compounds: ἔργα νόμου, Ἰουδαϊσμός, νόμος τοῦ ΧριστοῦAlready forbidden in the Romans baseline for bare “law”; Galatians requires the SAME avoidance extended consistently across every new compound built on য়াথাং, since ধর্ম’s works-toward-merit logic is the nearest LIVE cultural parallel to the very error Paul refutes throughout the letter.
সুন্নত (sunnot)Islamic circumcision practice/terminologyπεριτομή (circumcision)Reject — wrong religious-tradition association entirely; use লি কোকপা, a religiously unmarked descriptive term, and supply the OT background by direct instruction since no ritual parallel exists in Meitei culture to borrow meaning from.
ভক্তিগী সেবা (bhaktigi seba)Devotional service performed to build bhakti standing with Krishnaπίστις διʼ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη (faith working through love, 5:6) and ὑπακοὴ πίστεως (obedience of faith, thematic)Fence explicitly: Galatians’ “faith working through love” is faith EXPRESSING ITSELF toward others, never devotional feeling directed at accumulating merit with a deity.
মুক্তি (mukti)Sanskrit-derived liberation term, adjacent to মোক্ষ (already forbidden for “salvation” in the baseline)ἐξαγοράζω (redeemed, 3:13, 4:5)Reject; use লৌথোকপা, a commercial ransom-metaphor term without liberation-theology overtones.

General principle governing this section: wherever a Manipuri word is already the “obvious,” most fluent-sounding choice BECAUSE it names a well-developed concept within Sanamahism or Vaishnavism, that fluency is itself the risk signal, not a reassurance. The correct response is deliberate under-use of the fluent word and deliberate construction of a more marked, descriptive compound — exactly the pattern already established in the Romans baseline for grace, salvation, incarnation, and the Holy Spirit.

Section 4 — Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

CategoryDecisionExamplesRationale
Established proper names (persons)Transliterate, following existing Manipuri Bible convention where attestedজিসু, ক্রিস্তো, দাউদ, ইস্রায়েল (all REUSE); অব্রাহাম, হাগার, সারা, ইসমাইল, ইসহাক, কেফা/পিতর (NEW, confirm against current printed edition)Consistency with baseline convention; proper names carry low doctrinal-collision risk and gain nothing from paraphrase.
Object/instrument central to the atonementTransliterateক্রুস (cross)No natural Manipuri word for a Roman execution implement exists; transliteration (already the pattern in wider Bible-translation practice) avoids forcing an unrelated indigenous object-word into the slot. Feeds directly into the crucified-with-Christ compound.
Core soteriological terms already fixed by RomansReuse verbatim; no paraphrase decision to remakeগ্রেস, অচুম্বা ওইহনবা, অহানবা, থাজবা, অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাকCross-curriculum consistency mandate; Galatians 2:15-21 and 3:6 depend on exact reuse (imputed righteousness in particular, citing the identical Genesis 15:6 text as Romans 4:3).
Genuinely new theological compounds with no borrowable cultural equivalentParaphrase with a full descriptive compoundক্রিস্তোগা লোয়ননা ক্রুসদা হাত্তুনা সিখ্রে (crucified with Christ), অনৌবা শেমগৎপা (new creation), লান ফংবা মচা (heir), ৱাশাক্না পীবা (promise), মালেমগী থাওয়াইশিং (elemental spirits)These name doctrines absent from both indigenous traditions; a single borrowed word would either fail to communicate or (worse) borrow unwanted cultural freight. Full compounds keep the concept legible as a NEW category being explained, not an existing one being relabeled.
Concepts with an available but risky Manipuri/Bengali/Sanskrit loanwordReject the loanword; paraphrase insteadননথোকপা (not স্বাধীনতা), লৌথোকপা (not মুক্তি), অরাবা থাওয়াইগী থবক (not জাদু/তন্ত্র-মন্ত্র), লি কোকপা (not সুন্নত)The loanword’s fluency is exactly what makes it dangerous (Section 3 principle); a slightly less fluent but doctrinally clean paraphrase is preferred every time.
Rhetorical idiom with folk-magic literal meaningParaphrase the MEANING, not the literal image, unless the literal image is chosen with a mandatory noteἐβασκάνατε → করিগি অসুম্না অপাঙ্গবা ওইরবা (rhetorical paraphrase) rather than a literal evil-eye lexemePrevents validating literal sorcery-accusation belief while preserving Paul’s rhetorical force (“who put you under a spell?”).
Vice/virtue list items with no cultural collisionUse plain descriptive Manipuri compounds; no transliteration neededথমোই সাউবা (patience), ফবা তৌবা (kindness), অফবা ওইবা (goodness), নমবা ওইবা (gentleness), মশা কনবা (self-control)Low risk; standard modern Manipuri vocabulary suffices without special fencing.
Vice/virtue list items WITH collision riskParaphrase away from the colliding rootনুংঙাইবা not হরাওবা (joy); মশা কনবা taught with an explicit Spirit-given/not-self-effort note (self-control)See Section 3.

Section 5 — Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in Galatians

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × likelihood of cultural-lexical collision × review burden). All items ranked Critical or High require human theologian review per the escalation framework already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.

  1. στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου / “elemental spirits” (4:3, 4:9) — Critical. Highest-priority ambiguity in the whole curriculum: the abstract theological category maps with unusual precision onto the ACTIVE Umang Lai/Apokpa spirit-world of Sanamahi practice, and Paul’s rhetorical question (“how can you turn back to be enslaved to them again?”) is directly, personally addressed to anyone from that background. Requires theologian-reviewed note distinguishing Paul’s specific warning from any blanket judgment on Meitei cultural identity.

  2. ἐλευθερία / “freedom” (2:4, 5:1, 5:13) — Critical. A doctrinal ambiguity compounded by a LIVE contemporary political ambiguity absent from the Romans baseline entirely: the natural high-register Manipuri word for freedom is currently, actively used in an insurgency/autonomy political discourse. Every occurrence must be anchored to freedom from sin/law, never left to float toward political self-determination.

  3. Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι / “crucified with Christ” (2:19-20, inside the core passage) — Critical. The letter’s single most theologically dense NEW compound, sitting at the exact center of the assigned core passage. Ambiguity risk is grammatical (perfect-tense aspect must survive translation) as much as lexical; a translation that reads as a repeatable ritual act or a metaphor for general suffering loses Paul’s argument entirely.

  4. σάρξ / “flesh” — three senses in one letter (2:16, 2:20, ch. 5) — High. Ambiguity risk is structural: a translator defaulting to ONE Manipuri word across all three senses (a natural drift under time pressure) would silently merge Paul’s universal-humanity claim, his neutral autobiographical statement, and his moral flesh/Spirit antithesis into a single confused category.

  5. ἀνάθεμα vs. κατάρα — one Manipuri word (শাপ) for two distinct curse-concepts (1:8-9; 3:10-13) — Critical. Ambiguity risk is that the shared base word invites a single mental model (magical/mythological curse) for BOTH the apostolic judicial pronouncement and the law’s own penalty-function, when Paul’s argument in chapter 3 specifically depends on the LAW’s curse being a real judicial category that Christ bears (3:13) — a legal-substitutionary claim, not a magical one.

  6. ἔργα νόμου / “works of the law” as THE antithesis term to faith (2:16 ×3, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10) — Critical. Ambiguity risk is that without a fixed, always-identical rendering, readers could hear each occurrence as a slightly different idea rather than recognizing Paul’s single, repeated technical term — undermining the core passage’s entire logical structure.

  7. παιδαγωγός / “guardian, tutor” vs. গুরু (3:24-25) — High. Ambiguity risk is a values-INVERSION: the nearest fluent Manipuri cultural analogy (guru-shishya) carries the OPPOSITE temporal quality (permanent honor) from what Paul is arguing (temporary custodial function, now ended). A translator reaching for cultural fluency here reaches for exactly the wrong connotation.

  8. ἐβασκάνατε / “bewitched” (3:1) — Critical. Ambiguity risk runs in the opposite direction from most items on this list: TOO MUCH available native vocabulary (evil-eye belief is real and active), such that a literal rendering risks being heard as Paul making a literal sorcery accusation against the Galatians rather than using a rhetorical idiom.

  9. ἐπαγγελία vs. διαθήκη — “promise” vs. “covenant” as sequential legal categories (3:15-18) — High. Ambiguity risk is that Manipuri’s one strong existing covenant-word (ৱারেপ্পা) could absorb the new “promise” term, erasing the CHRONOLOGICAL PRIORITY argument (promise precedes and is not annulled by the later law) on which Paul’s entire chapter-3 case depends.

  10. καινὴ κτίσις / “new creation” vs. পুনর্জন্ম (6:15) — Critical. Ambiguity risk is direct adjacency to the Romans baseline’s already-flagged resurrection/rebirth collision; “new creation” and “resurrection” are theologically neighboring categories, doubling the chance that a Vaishnava-influenced cyclical-rebirth lens gets applied to BOTH.

  11. φαρμακεία / “sorcery” in the vice list (5:20) — Critical, primarily for PASTORAL rather than lexical reasons. Ambiguity risk is that an imprecise rendering could be heard (or later weaponized in local discourse) as a blanket condemnation of maibi/maiba ritual roles as practiced within living Sanamahi tradition, rather than a specific vice-category.

  12. χαρά / “joy” (fruit of the Spirit) vs. হরাওবা / Lai Haraoba (5:22) — High. Ambiguity risk is a single shared morpheme creating an unintended festival association at exactly the point in the list most likely to be memorized and repeated aloud in teaching settings.

  13. κληρονόμος / “heir” taught separately from adoption (4:1, 4:7) — High. Ambiguity risk is that Meitei yumnak/clan inheritance is birth-based; if adoption and heirship are presented as two independent glossary items rather than one linked doctrinal unit, a reader may unconsciously supply the (wrong) birth-lineage model to fill the gap.

  14. νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ / “law of Christ” reusing the word for Mosaic Law (6:2) — High. Ambiguity risk is that Paul’s own paradoxical reuse of νόμος, after several chapters dismantling law-righteousness, could be misheard by readers as Paul quietly reintroducing Mosaic observance as the standard after all.

  15. φύσει / “by nature/birth” (2:15) inside the core passage — Medium-High. Ambiguity risk is specifically local to Manipur’s yumnak/clan-lineage culture, where birth-status carries genuine social weight; Paul’s rhetorical move (conceding Jewish birth-privilege only to immediately demolish its soteriological relevance) requires the concession-and-reversal structure to be visible in translation, not just the concession half.

Section 6 — Full-Book Chapter Coverage Confirmation

Per the mandatory full-coverage rule, every chapter of Galatians has been reviewed for load-bearing vocabulary, whether or not it contributed new terms beyond those already surfaced above.

  • Galatians 1 — Reviewed. Contributes: gospel/false gospel/anathema triad, apostleship (direct-commissioning emphasis), calling, revealed, glory (doxology), church (plural, “churches of Galatia”).
  • Galatians 2 — Reviewed. Contains the core passage (2:15-21) and its dense cluster: justification, works of the law, faith, righteousness, grace, Son of God, crucified with Christ, transgressor, servant of sin, by-nature, flesh (humanity and neutral senses), pillars, Jews/Gentiles, circumcision (introduced).
