Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 2 Peter (Full Book, Chapters 1–3)
Purpose and Scope
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the 2 Peter curriculum, mandated by PRD Phase 1 Step 4. It spans the entire book, chapter 1 through chapter 3, verse range by verse range. The core passage, 2 Peter 1:16-21 (the apostolic eyewitness testimony to the Transfiguration and the resulting confirmation of the prophetic word), is the theological anchor of the curriculum but is not the scope boundary: every chapter of 2 Peter is analyzed below, and any passage that contributes no new doctrinal load-bearing content is explicitly marked “reviewed — no new doctrine” rather than silently omitted.
This document is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 Peter, v1): the same 15 doctrines are used, at the same risk tiers, with the same review routing. No doctrine, tier, or routing decision here contradicts that registry. Where a doctrine’s risk notes reference specific Manipuri comparative-religion collisions (Sanamahism, Gaudiya Vaishnavism), those grounded reasons are repeated here in summary form for translator reference; full detail remains in the registry and in 08_core_glossary.md.
Risk tier definitions (as established in the Romans baseline and carried forward unchanged):
- Critical — Mistranslation destroys or alters essential doctrine. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation risks significant theological confusion or syncretism. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding. Automated review sufficient.
Master Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (2 Peter) | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | 1:16-18, 1:19-21, 3:2, 3:15-16 | Critical | ”Carried along by the Holy Spirit” (1:21) closely parallels maibi trance-possession by an Umang Lai deity during Lai Haraoba; must be taught as Spirit-superintended writing preserving human faculties, not ecstatic oracular seizure. Also requires pastoral sensitivity to the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei sacred manuscripts (puya) — Scripture’s authority rests on God’s own inspiration and preservation, not royal/institutional sanction. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Apostolic Canon-Consciousness (Scripture Extended to Paul’s Letters) | 3:15-16 | Critical | Peter’s classing of Paul’s letters as “Scripture” alongside a warning against distortion must be taught as recognition of a closed, divinely authoritative apostolic deposit, not one respected teacher’s writings among others open to ongoing guru-style revelation. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Growing in Christian Virtue | 1:3-8, 1:10-11, 3:18 | High | The virtue chain (aretē, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, agapē) is Spirit-enabled fruit of grace already given (1:3-4), not merit-earning effort. Must distinguish aretē from Vaishnava celebration of Krishna’s guṇas and Sanamahi communal ethics; agapē from Ras Lila’s prema-bhakti romantic-devotional love. | Human theologian |
| 4 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | 2:1-3, 2:9-10, 2:12-13, 2:17 | Critical | These teachers arise from within the believing community (2:1), not as outside religious rivals. Must be framed strictly as internal-church warning against doctrinal corruption from within — never generalized into blanket polemic against Sanamahi or Vaishnava neighbors, which would misapply the text amid Manipur’s live, multi-tradition religious landscape. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The Moral Corruption of False Teachers | 2:2, 2:13-14, 2:18-19 | High | Critique of exploitative sensuality (aselgeia) and false-promised freedom must not be read as broad critique of the Ras Lila devotional dance tradition (a UNESCO-recognized art form on Radha-Krishna’s sacred allegorical love); the text targets moral exploitation by specific false teachers, not devotional art or symbolic theology. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Certainty of Christ’s Return | 1:16-18, 3:3-4, 3:8-10 | Critical | Directly parallels the live Vaishnava doctrine of the still-awaited Kalki avatar (final avatar of Vishnu at the close of Kali Yuga). Christ’s parousia must be taught as the unique, unrepeatable, personal return of the same incarnate Son who already came once — not one more item in an open avatar sequence. Eyewitness grounding (1:16-18) must avoid suggesting privileged mystical initiation paralleling maibi/maiba exclusive ritual “seeing.” | Human theologian |
| 7 | The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | 2:4-9, 3:7, 3:10-13 | Critical | Must be distinguished from the cyclical Hindu/Vaishnava Yuga/pralaya framework (recurring cosmic dissolution and re-creation, including dissolution of the Pañca Mahābhūta elements); this is a single, final, unrepeatable day. Tartarus custody (2:4) must not be equated with Hindu Naraka (temporary hell-realms within rebirth) or a Sanamahi ancestral punishment-realm. Judgment is a personal God’s forensic verdict, not impersonal karma. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Patience of God’s Timing | 3:8-9, 3:15 | High | God’s patience delaying judgment so more may repent must be distinguished from the impersonal, mechanical unfolding of Hindu Yuga time-cycles. This is personal, purposive forbearance, not a cosmic clock. Universal scope (“not wishing that any should perish”) must be retained without qualification. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption | 1:3-4, 2:19-20 | Critical | Highest-priority doctrine in this book. “Divine nature” (theia physis, 1:4) collides with THREE live Manipuri categories: (1) Vaishnava bhakti/Advaita sāyujya (merging with Krishna’s being); (2) Sanamahi kinship-based divinity (Sanamahi as literal “elder brother” of Pakhangba, divinity through blood/lineage); (3) avatar theology’s repeated divine embodiment. Must be taught as moral/relational participation in God’s holy character via the Spirit’s sanctifying work — never ontological deification, absorption, or kinship claim. Corruption (phthora) distinguished from neutral cyclical decay within samsara. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Deity and Sonship of Christ | 1:1, 1:17 | Critical | ”Our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (1:1) is a single-referent divine title requiring full co-equal deity; the Father’s declaration “This is my beloved Son” (1:17) requires unique, eternal Sonship. Neither may be softened into “a great avatar” or “a favored being within the Umang Lai spirit-world”; the Father-Son love (agapētos) is filial and eternal, distinct from Ras Lila’s prema-bhakti. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony | 1:16-18 | High | Peter grounds proclamation in ordinary, historically verifiable, firsthand sight (epoptai), denying it is a “cleverly devised myth.” Must not use any term suggesting privileged mystical initiation paralleling a maibi/maiba’s exclusive ritual “seeing” during Lai Haraoba trance. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Apostolic Authority and Servanthood | 1:1, 3:2 | Medium | Peter’s self-designation “servant/slave of Jesus Christ” must be distinguished from the historic Meitei lallup corvée labor-service owed to the king, and from a guru’s dependent disciple (chela) in Vaishnava lineages; this is willing, honored total belonging to Christ. | Native speaker |
| 13 | Historical Precedents of Judgment | 2:4-9 | Medium | The judgment-with-preservation pattern (fallen angels, the flood/Noah, Sodom-Gomorrah/Lot) establishes God’s certain, discriminating historical judgment — one-time events tied to a personal God’s specific verdicts, not illustrations of an impersonal cyclical cosmic order. | Native speaker |
| 14 | Assurance through Calling and Election | 1:1, 1:10 | High | Believers “confirm” (make certain) their calling and election through diligent godly living (1:10); this is growing assurance of a settled, sovereign divine choice already made — never an ongoing, uncertain karmic-merit accumulation, nor a devotional standing continually re-earned through bhakti service. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Apostolic Greeting: Grace and Peace | 1:2 | Low | Standard epistolary greeting formula; grace and peace multiplied through the knowledge (epignōsis) of God. Minor risk beyond consistency with the Critical-tier grace/peace renderings already fixed in translation memory. | Automated review |
Risk tier totals (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json risk_summary): Critical: 7 | High: 5 | Medium: 2 | Low: 1 | Total doctrines: 15 | Requiring theologian review: 12 | Requiring native speaker review: 2 | Automated only: 1.
Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage
Chapter 1 (vv. 1-2): Apostolic Greeting
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1a | Peter identifies himself as “servant and apostle of Jesus Christ” | Apostolic Authority and Servanthood | Medium | Distinguish from lallup corvée service and guru-chela dependency; see baseline apostle term (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা). |
| 1:1b | ”To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours… our God and Savior Jesus Christ” | Deity and Sonship of Christ; Assurance through Calling and Election | Critical / High | Single-referent divine title “God and Savior” requires full deity; faith “of equal standing” ties to assurance/election doctrine. Sōtēr (Savior) is a new Critical term (see 08_core_glossary.md) — collides with Vaishnava Krishna-as-refuge devotional category. |
| 1:2 | ”Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord” | Apostolic Greeting: Grace and Peace | Low | Reuse baseline grace/peace terms exactly; epignōsis (full knowledge) flagged as High-risk term under Growing in Virtue. |
Chapter 1 (vv. 3-11): The Virtue Chain and Assurance
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:3-4 | Divine power has granted all things for life and godliness; “partakers of the divine nature,” having escaped corruption | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption | Critical | The single highest-priority doctrine in the book. Full triple-collision reasoning (Vaishnava sāyujya, Sanamahi kinship-divinity, avatar theology) applies here at first occurrence; must anchor all downstream teaching of 1:4 and 2:19-20. |
| 1:5-7 | The virtue chain: faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, love | Growing in Christian Virtue | High | Reuse faith (থাজবা) from baseline; new terms aretē, egkrateia, hypomonē, eusebeia, philadelphia, agapē per glossary. Frame as grace-enabled, not merit-earning. |
| 1:8-9 | Fruitfulness vs. spiritual blindness/forgetting cleansing from past sins | Growing in Christian Virtue | High | Same doctrine continuation; no new collision beyond 1:5-7. |
| 1:10-11 | ”Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election… entrance into the eternal kingdom” | Assurance through Calling and Election | High | Reuse baseline calling/election/kingdom terms exactly. Confirming election is growing assurance of a settled divine choice, not karmic-merit accumulation or bhakti re-earning. |
Chapter 1 (vv. 12-15): Peter’s Reminder Ministry
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:12-15 | Peter’s intent to keep reminding readers “as long as I am in this body (tent),” anticipating his death | Reviewed — supports Growing in Christian Virtue and Reliability of Scripture indirectly (apostolic reminder ministry as trustworthy transmission) but introduces no new Critical/High doctrine beyond the terms already tracked (skēnōma “tent/body,” exodos “departure,” both Medium/Low per glossary). | Medium/Low | No new doctrine-tier entry required; terms recorded in 08_core_glossary.md Section B/C. |
Chapter 1 (vv. 16-21): CORE PASSAGE — Eyewitness Testimony and the Prophetic Word
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:16 | ”We did not follow cleverly devised myths… we were eyewitnesses of his majesty” | Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony; Certainty of Christ’s Return | High / Critical | Anchor verse of the curriculum. “Myth” (mythos) contrasted with verifiable historical sight; must not read as privileged mystical initiation paralleling maibi/maiba ritual “seeing.” |
| 1:17-18 | The Transfiguration: the Father’s voice, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” on the holy mountain | Deity and Sonship of Christ; Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony | Critical / High | Unique, eternal Sonship (agapētos, “beloved”) distinct from Ras Lila prema-bhakti; “holy mountain” distinguished from Umang Lai sacred grove sites (see baseline holy term, অসেংবা). |
| 1:19 | ”We have the prophetic word made more sure… a lamp shining in a dark place” | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture; Certainty of Christ’s Return | Critical | Prophetic word confirmed by eyewitness event, pointing to the certain future parousia; “morning star” (phōsphoros, v.19b) flagged to avoid Hindu astrological Venus/Shukra association. |
| 1:20-21 | ”No prophecy… came from someone’s own interpretation… men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Critical | The doctrine’s sharpest collision point: “carried along” (pheromenoi) vs. maibi trance-possession. Must affirm Scripture’s divine origin, preserved human authorship, and address Puya Meithaba cultural memory of lost sacred texts with pastoral care. |
Chapter 2 (vv. 1-3): False Teachers Introduced
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1 | ”False prophets also arose among the people… false teachers among you… destructive heresies… even denying the Master” | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Critical | Explicit internal-church framing must be preserved: these arise “among you,” not among rival traditions. Reuse baseline “master/Lord” caution (despotēs distinguished from lallup lord-subject and guru-disciple hierarchy). |
| 2:2-3 | Sensuality, greed, exploitation “with false words” | False Teachers and Their Judgment; The Moral Corruption of False Teachers | Critical / High | Sensuality critique (aselgeia) must not be read as critique of Ras Lila devotional art. |
Chapter 2 (vv. 4-10a): Historical Precedents of Judgment
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:4 | Angels who sinned, cast into Tartarus, “committed to chains of gloomy darkness” | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment; Historical Precedents of Judgment | Critical / Medium | Tartarus (tartarōsas) must not be equated with Hindu Naraka or Sanamahi ancestral punishment-realm; this is temporary custody awaiting one final judgment, not a station in a rebirth cycle. |
| 2:5 | The flood and Noah, “preacher of righteousness” | Historical Precedents of Judgment | Medium | Preacher of righteousness built on baseline righteousness + prophet roots; one-time historical judgment-with-preservation event. |
| 2:6-8 | Sodom and Gomorrah condemned; Lot preserved | Historical Precedents of Judgment | Medium | Standard proper-name transliteration per glossary (সোদোম, গোমোরা, লোত). |
| 2:9-10a | ”The Lord knows how to rescue the godly… and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment” | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment; Patience of God’s Timing | Critical / High | Judgment as personal forensic verdict at an appointed day, distinguished from impersonal karma. |
Chapter 2 (vv. 10b-22): The Moral Corruption of False Teachers
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:10b-13 | Bold, willful, irrational, reveling in deception; “bought/redeemed” language re false teachers denying the Master | False Teachers and Their Judgment; False Teachers’ Moral Corruption | Critical / High | ”Bought/redeemed” (agorasanta) flagged per baseline escalation rule for atonement-adjacent language. |
| 2:14-16 | Insatiable for sin, greed-trained hearts, Balaam’s error | False Teachers’ Moral Corruption | High | Balaam standard transliteration (বালাম); greed (pleonexia) as Medium-tier companion term. |
| 2:17-19 | ”Waterless springs and mists,” slaves of corruption, promising freedom while themselves enslaved | False Teachers’ Moral Corruption; Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption | High / Critical | ”Slaves of corruption” pairs directly with the phthora entry under Divine Nature doctrine; false “freedom” (eleutheria) must be distinguished from true freedom in Christ. |
| 2:20-22 | Having escaped defilement and become entangled again — “worse than before”; dog/sow proverbs | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption; False Teachers and Their Judgment | Critical | Direct echo of 1:4’s “escaped corruption,” now shown reversed — reinforces that this is real moral escape, not an irreversible ontological transformation, and its loss is a serious apostasy warning. |
Chapter 3 (vv. 1-2): Reminder of Apostolic and Prophetic Witness
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1-2 | Peter’s second letter as a reminder; “predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord… through your apostles” | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture; Apostolic Authority and Servanthood | Critical / Medium | Reuse baseline prophet/prophecy terms exactly; ties apostolic and prophetic authority together as a single trustworthy deposit. |
Chapter 3 (vv. 3-7): Scoffers and the Coming Judgment
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:3-4 | Scoffers ask, “Where is the promise of his coming? … all things continue as they were” | Certainty of Christ’s Return | Critical | Scoffers’ argument from apparent delay must be answered without conceding to a cyclical-time framework; distinguish from any suggestion that Christ’s return is one of an open series of expected divine appearances. |
| 3:5-6 | The world formerly destroyed by water (the flood) | Historical Precedents of Judgment; Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Medium / Critical | Historical, one-time precedent reinforcing the certainty of a future one-time judgment by fire. |
| 3:7 | ”The heavens and earth… are being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Critical | ”Ungodly” (asebēs) as the opposite of eusebeia; judgment reserved for a single appointed day. |
Chapter 3 (vv. 8-10): Patience and the Day of the Lord
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:8 | ”With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” | Patience of God’s Timing | High | Must not be reread through a Yuga-cycle lens (vast, impersonally unfolding cosmic ages); this is a statement about God’s personal relationship to time, not a cosmological time-scale doctrine. |
| 3:9 | ”The Lord is not slow… but is patient… not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” | Patience of God’s Timing | High | Universal scope (“any,” “all”) must be retained without qualification per baseline universality rule; distinguish personal purposive patience from an impersonal cosmic clock. |
| 3:10 | ”The day of the Lord will come like a thief… the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies (elements) will be burned up” | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Critical | ”Elements” (stoicheia) must not be read through Pañca Mahābhūta cosmology framed as a phase of a repeating pralaya cycle; this is a single historical dissolution. Reuse “thief” (kleptēs) as Low-risk term. |
Chapter 3 (vv. 11-13): Holy Living in Light of the Day of the Lord
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:11-12 | ”What sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God” | Growing in Christian Virtue; Certainty of Christ’s Return | High / Critical | ”Holy conduct and godliness” ties practical ethics directly to the certainty of judgment; reuse baseline holy (অসেংবা). |
| 3:13 | ”According to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Critical | ”New heavens and new earth” must be distinguished from Hindu cyclical re-creation after pralaya; this is a final, non-repeating consummation in which righteousness permanently dwells (reuse baseline righteousness term). |
Chapter 3 (vv. 14-16): Peter’s Final Exhortation and Canon-Consciousness
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:14 | ”Be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace” | Growing in Christian Virtue | High | Reuse baseline peace (ইনগবা); diligence (spoudē) as grace-enabled response, not merit-earning. |
| 3:15 | ”Count the patience of our Lord as salvation… as also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you” | Patience of God’s Timing; Salvation | High / Critical | Reuse baseline salvation term (অহানবা) exactly; ties patience doctrine directly to salvation’s certainty. |
| 3:16 | ”There are some things in [Paul’s letters] that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist… to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures” | Apostolic Canon-Consciousness (Scripture Extended to Paul’s Letters); Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Critical | Peter explicitly classes Paul’s letters as “Scripture” — a within-New-Testament recognition of a closed, divinely authoritative deposit. “Twist/distort” (strebrousin) and “unstable” (astēriktoi) reused per glossary; must not be softened into a merely human-authored, open-ended teaching tradition. |
Chapter 3 (vv. 17-18): Closing Doxology
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:17 | Warning against being carried away by “the error of lawless people” and losing “stability” | Growing in Christian Virtue; False Teachers and Their Judgment | High / Critical | Reinforces both doctrines at the letter’s close; “error” (planē) reused from ch.1-2 tracking. |
| 3:18 | ”Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity” | Growing in Christian Virtue; Deity and Sonship of Christ | High / Critical | Closing doxology reaffirms Christ’s eternal (non-cyclical, non-avatar) glory; reuse baseline grace and glory terms exactly. Sōtēr (“Savior”) recurs, closing the inclusio begun at 1:1. |

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Manipuri name: অসেংবা মপুং ৱারিগী থাওয়াই পীবা
Key terms: scripture, carried_along_by_spirit, prophetic_word_confirmed, own_interpretation, myth, eyewitnesses
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 2 Peter 1:21’s image of prophets being ‘carried along’ by the Holy Spirit closely parallels a maibi priestess’s ritual possession/trance-seizure by an Umang Lai deity during Lai Haraoba; must be taught as Spirit-superintended writing that preserved the human authors’ own faculties and vocabulary, not ecstatic possession or oracular trance. Additionally, given the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei sacred manuscripts (puya), this doctrine must be taught with pastoral sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory of lost/destroyed sacred texts, affirming that Scripture’s authority rests on God’s own inspiration and providential preservation, not royal or institutional sanction.
Apostolic Canon-Consciousness (Scripture Extended to Paul’s Letters)
Manipuri name: পলগী চিঠিশিং অসেংবা মপুং ৱারি ওইনা লৌবা
Key terms: scripture, twist_distort_scripture, hard_to_understand, unstable, firmness
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Peter’s explicit classing of Paul’s letters as Scripture, alongside a warning against distortion, must be taught as a within-the-New-Testament recognition of a closed, divinely authoritative deposit, not merely one respected teacher’s writings among others; conflating this with an open-ended, ongoing revelation model (as some devotional traditions maintain regarding continuing guru-teaching) would weaken the doctrine of a completed apostolic canon.
False Teachers and Their Judgment
Manipuri name: মীমাংনবা তক্লিবা মীওইশিংগী ৱাযেন্বা
Key terms: false_teachers, false_prophets, destructive_heresies, master, bought_redeemed, destruction_perdition
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: these false teachers arise from within the believing community (2:1), not as outside religious rivals. Given Manipur’s currently live, multi-tradition religious landscape (active Sanamahi revival and Gaudiya Vaishnavism), this doctrine must be taught explicitly as an internal-church warning against doctrinal corruption from within, never generalized into blanket polemic against Sanamahi or Vaishnava neighbors, which would misapply the text and cause unwarranted inter-community offense.
The Certainty of Christ’s Return
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী হন্না লাকপগী চেৎনা লৈবা
Key terms: parousia, eyewitnesses, majesty_and_majestic_glory, scoffers
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Manipuri Vaishnavism holds a live doctrine of a still-awaited future divine appearance — the Kalki avatar, the tenth and final avatar of Vishnu, expected at the close of the Kali Yuga. Christ’s parousia must be taught as the unique, unrepeatable, personal return of the very same incarnate Son who already came once — not as one more expected item in an open avatar sequence, nor as inaugurating a new cosmic age-cycle. The Transfiguration eyewitness testimony (1:16-18) grounding this certainty must also avoid any suggestion of privileged mystical initiation paralleling maibi/maiba exclusive ritual ‘seeing.‘
The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment
Manipuri name: মপু ইবুংগোগী নুমিত অমসুং অরোইবা ৱাযেন্বা
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, elements, new_heavens_and_new_earth, judgment, tartarus_custody, destruction_perdition, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: must be distinguished from the cyclical Hindu/Vaishnava cosmological framework of recurring Yuga-ages ending in pralaya (periodic cosmic dissolution, including dissolution of the Pañca Mahābhūta elements) followed by renewed creation; the Day of the Lord is a single, final, unrepeatable, personally-decreed day of judgment and re-creation. The fallen angels’ custody in 2:4 (Tartarus) must not be equated with the Hindu Naraka system of temporary hell-realms within an ongoing rebirth cycle, nor with any Sanamahi ancestral punishment-realm. Judgment itself must be taught as a personal God’s specific forensic verdict at an appointed day, not the impersonal, automatic mechanism of karma.
Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী মহৈদা লোয়ননবা অমসুং মংহনবদগী নানথোকপা
Key terms: divine_nature, partakers_of_divine_nature, corruption, epithymia_lust, epignosis_knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, highest-priority doctrine in this book: theia physis (‘divine nature,’ 1:4) is uniquely vulnerable to conflation with THREE separate live Manipuri theological categories: (1) Advaita/bhakti sāyujya — the aspiration of some Vaishnava devotional schools toward ultimate merging/oneness with Krishna’s divine being; (2) Sanamahi kinship-based divinity, in which Sanamahi is understood as literal ‘elder brother’ of the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba, i.e. divinity conceived through blood/lineage kinship; (3) avatar theology’s repeated divine embodiment. This must be taught explicitly as moral/relational participation in God’s holy character through the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work — NOT ontological deification, NOT absorption/merging into ultimate reality, and NOT a kinship-based claim to shared divine nature. Corruption (phthora) must likewise be distinguished from neutral cyclical decay within samsara.
Deity and Sonship of Christ
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তোগী তেংবাং মপু অমসুং মচানুপা ওইবা
Key terms: god_and_savior_title, son_of_god, beloved, well_pleased, majesty_and_majestic_glory
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘our God and Savior Jesus Christ’ (1:1) is a single-referent divine title requiring full, co-equal deity, and the Father’s declaration ‘This is my beloved Son’ (1:17) requires unique, eternal Sonship. Neither claim may be softened into ‘a great avatar’ or ‘a specially favored being within the Umang Lai spirit-world’; the Father’s love for the Son (agapētos) must be taught as filial and eternal, distinct from Ras Lila’s prema-bhakti romantic-devotional love category.
High Risk Doctrines
Growing in Christian Virtue
Manipuri name: ক্রিস্তান চৎনবিরাক হৌদোকপা
Key terms: aretē_virtue, self_control, steadfastness_endurance, godliness, brotherly_affection, love_agape, epignosis_knowledge, diligence_effort, grow
Review routing: Human theologian
The virtue chain must be taught as the Spirit-enabled fruit of grace already given (1:3-4), not merit-earning effort. Aretē (moral excellence) must be distinguished from Vaishnava celebration of Krishna’s guṇas extolled in bhakti devotional song and from Sanamahi communal ethical norms upheld through Lai Haraoba; agapē love must be distinguished from Ras Lila’s prema-bhakti (romantic-devotional love of Radha and Krishna).
The Moral Corruption of False Teachers
Manipuri name: মীমাংনবা তক্লিবা মীওইশিংগী চৎনবিরাক মংহনবা

The critique of exploitative sensuality (aselgeia) and false-promised freedom must not be read as a broad critique of the Ras Lila devotional dance tradition itself (a UNESCO-recognized art form centered on the sacred, allegorical romantic love of Radha-Krishna); 2 Peter targets moral exploitation and deception practiced by specific false teachers, not devotional art or symbolic theology as such — this distinction must be made explicitly to avoid unintended offense.
Patience of God’s Timing
Manipuri name: তেংবাং মপুগী খুদোংচাবগী মতম
Key terms: patience_of_god, delay, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s patience in delaying judgment so that more may repent must be distinguished from the impersonal, mechanical unfolding of cosmic time-cycles in Hindu Yuga theology, in which vast ages simply elapse regardless of human repentance; 2 Peter 3:9’s patience is the personal, purposive forbearance of a relational God, not an impersonal cosmic clock. The universal scope (‘not wishing that any should perish’) must be retained without qualification.
Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony
Manipuri name: মিত্তা উবা সাক্ষী
Key terms: eyewitnesses, myth, voice, holy_mountain
Review routing: Human theologian
Peter grounds apostolic proclamation in ordinary, historically verifiable, firsthand sight (‘we ourselves saw,’ epoptai), denying it is a ‘cleverly devised myth.’ Must not be rendered with any term suggesting privileged mystical initiation paralleling a maibi’s or maiba’s exclusive ritual ‘seeing’ during Lai Haraoba trance; this is verifiable historical testimony available in principle to any witness present.
Assurance through Calling and Election
Manipuri name: কৌখিবা অমসুং খনবগী থাজবা
Key terms: calling, election, epignosis_knowledge, faith_of_equal_standing
Review routing: Human theologian
Believers are urged to ‘confirm’ (make certain) their calling and election through diligent godly living (1:10); this must be taught as growing assurance of a settled, sovereign divine choice already made, never as an ongoing, uncertain karmic-merit accumulation process or a devotional-standing that must be continually re-earned through bhakti service.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Apostolic Authority and Servanthood
Manipuri name: তবিদগী থাবিরকপগী মপুং ফাবা অমসুং লান্মী ওইবা
Key terms: apostle, servant_slave
Review routing: Native speaker review
Peter’s self-designation as ‘servant/slave of Jesus Christ’ must be distinguished from the historic Meitei lallup corvée labor-service obligation owed to the king, and from a guru’s dependent disciple (chela) in Vaishnava guru-lineages; this is a willing, honored identity of total belonging to Christ, not coerced labor or subordinate discipleship rank.
Historical Precedents of Judgment
Manipuri name: মমাংগী ৱাযেন্বগী মখা তাবা
Key terms: angels_who_sinned, flood, preacher_of_righteousness, way_of_truth_righteousness
Review routing: Native speaker review
The pattern of judgment-with-preservation (fallen angels, the flood and Noah, Sodom/Gomorrah and Lot) establishes God’s certain, discriminating judgment across history. These are historical, one-time events tied to a personal God’s specific verdicts, not illustrations of an impersonal cyclical cosmic order.
Low Risk Doctrines
Apostolic Greeting: Grace and Peace
Manipuri name: মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং অমসুং ইনগবগী খুরুমজরি
Key terms: grace, peace, epignosis_knowledge
Review routing: Automated review
Standard epistolary greeting formula; grace and peace multiplied through the knowledge of God. Minor risk beyond ensuring consistency with the Critical-tier grace and peace term renderings already fixed in translation memory.
