Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 1 Timothy 1–6 (English → Manipuri)
Methodology and Scope
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every significant parallel to the Romans curriculum (and, where relevant, to other Pauline/Pastoral material anticipated in future curricula) found across all six chapters of 1 Timothy, first verse to last. The core passage, 1 Timothy 3:1-13, receives the same full treatment as every other chapter — it is the theological anchor of this curriculum, not its scope boundary.
Citations are normalized to the format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Deuteronomy 25:4, Romans 1:3) throughout, per the standing citation convention. Verse numbers remain Arabic numerals, matching the YouVersion reference system used across all Language Package documents.
Governing rule: Wherever a citation, term, or doctrine already has a fixed rendering in the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json), that rendering MUST be reused exactly here and in every downstream 1 Timothy artifact. This document does not re-derive any such term; it flags where reuse is required and where a new shared-quotation risk arises specific to 1 Timothy.
Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Shared doxological/monotheism vocabulary (1 Timothy 1:17; 2:5; 6:15-16) must align with Romans’ existing God/Lord/glory renderings. Use তেংবাং মপু (God), মপু ইবুংগো (Lord), মতিক চাউবা (glory) exactly as fixed in the Romans baseline. Do not introduce a parallel doxological vocabulary set for 1 Timothy.
- The Christ-hymn of 1 Timothy 3:16 restates, in creedal summary form, doctrines already Critical-tier in the Romans baseline (Incarnation, Deity of Christ, Resurrection, Glory). Every clause of the hymn must reuse the exact Romans-baseline rendering for its corresponding doctrine: “manifested in the flesh” → incarnation family [মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা]; “taken up in glory” → [মতিক চাউবা]; resurrection-adjacent vindication language → [সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা family, applied with theologian-flagged care per the Ch. 3 note on Christological justification]. No independent 1 Timothy-specific rendering may substitute for these.
- 1 Timothy 6:12-13’s “good confession” must be taught in explicit continuity with the Romans 10:9 Lordship-confession consistency rule already mandated in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md(“Same rendering of Romans 10:9-10 across all documents”). The confession “Jesus is Lord” and Timothy’s/Christ’s “good confession” belong to the same theological family and should draw on identical Lordship vocabulary (মপু ইবুংগো). - 1 Timothy 2:6’s “ransom for all” and Mark 10:45’s “ransom for many” (a future-curriculum cross-reference) must be rendered with the same descriptive compound (হন্থোকপগী মথৌ, “the price of release/deliverance”) wherever both texts are eventually translated, to preserve the intentional verbal echo Paul is making of Jesus’ own recorded teaching.
- 1 Timothy 5:18’s double citation (Deuteronomy 25:4 and Luke 10:7, both introduced by “Scripture says”) requires special handling: both quotations must be rendered as direct, dignified quotation (not paraphrase), and a translator’s note should record that Paul treats a saying of Jesus alongside Torah as equally authoritative “Scripture” — directly relevant to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine already flagged High-risk in the Romans baseline, and requiring the same cultural sensitivity noted there regarding the 1729 Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning memory.
- Proper names: Adam and Eve (2:13-14) do not yet have a fixed Manipuri Bible rendering recorded in the Romans baseline (Romans does not name them). Propose transliteration আদম (Adam) and ইভ (Eve) following standard Bible Society of India Manipuri Bible convention; [CONFIRM against current printed edition before Phase 2 deployment]. Once fixed here, these forms must be reused in any future curriculum touching Romans 5:12-21’s Adam-Christ typology.
- Satan/the devil (1 Timothy 1:20; 3:6-7,11; 5:15) should use the same transliterated form used across the Romans-descended Language Package tradition (confirm সয়তান against the current printed Manipuri Bible), keeping it distinct from any Meitei traditional malevolent-spirit or lai category, per the semantic analysis (07) already on record.
- Old Testament citation format: every OT citation below normalizes to
Book Chapter:Verse. Where 1 Timothy alludes to but does not directly quote an OT passage, this is marked “Allusion” rather than “Quotation” in the Connection Type column.
Chapter 1 — Sound Doctrine, the Law, Paul’s Testimony
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 1:8-10 | The Law used lawfully; vice list | Moses (implied, lawgiver) | Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21 (Ten Commandments structure underlies the vice list: those who strike fathers/mothers, murderers, sexually immoral, enslavers, liars — cf. commandments 5-9) | Allusion (structural) | Reuse REUSED law [য়াথাং]. Teach that Paul affirms, not abolishes, the Law’s goodness (cf. Romans 7:12, “the law is holy”) — a point requiring explicit connection to the Romans Fulfillment-of-Prophecy/Law doctrine so this is not read as a Marcion-style rejection of the Old Testament. |
| 1 Timothy 1:9-10 | Vice list | — | Romans 1:29-31 (parallel Pauline vice list) | Parallel to Romans | Render consistently with any Romans 1:29-31 vice-term choices already fixed if that curriculum’s Phase 2 output is available; if not yet fixed, flag for cross-curriculum harmonization once Romans Phase 2 completes. |
| 1 Timothy 1:11 | The gospel entrusted to Paul | Paul | Romans 1:1,16; 2:16 (“my gospel”) | Parallel to Romans | REUSED gospel [নুংঙাইবগী পাউ] — no deviation permitted. |
| 1 Timothy 1:12-16 | Paul’s testimony: foremost of sinners, mercy shown | Paul (typological pattern of grace toward the chief of sinners) | Romans 5:8,20 (“while we were still sinners… where sin increased, grace abounded more”); Luke 19:10 (“the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost”); Acts 9:1-19 (Paul’s conversion narrative, presupposed) | Allusion / Parallel to Romans | Teach 1:15 (“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”) as a direct doctrinal restatement of Romans’ grace-apart-from-works argument (Romans 3:24; 4:4-5; 11:5-6); reuse grace [মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং] and its Critical-tier bhakti-contrast note exactly. |
| 1 Timothy 1:15 | ”Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” | Christ Jesus | Matthew 1:21; Luke 19:10; 1 John 3:5 (future-curriculum parallels) | Messianic reference | REUSED salvation/sin roots [অহানবা / পাপ]. This is a “trustworthy saying” (πιστὸς ὁ λόγος) formula — render the formula identically at every recurrence (1:15; 3:1; 4:9). |
| 1 Timothy 1:17 | Doxology: “the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God” | — | Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema, “the LORD our God, the LORD is one”); Deuteronomy 4:15-19 (God’s invisibility, no image); Isaiah 40:28; Psalm 145:13 | Allusion / Messianic-adjacent (monotheism foundation) | High sensitivity. God’s invisibility and non-image status stands in direct, explicit tension with both the Umang Lai sacred-image/shrine tradition and Vaishnava murti (image) devotion practiced through Ras Lila performance staging. Reuse REUSED God [তেংবাং মপু]; this doxology should be taught alongside Romans 1:23 (“exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images”) as a matched pair across curricula. |
| 1 Timothy 1:17 | Doxology form | — | Romans 11:33-36; Romans 16:25-27 | Parallel to Romans | Same doxological pattern (praise-formula closing a theological unit); render with the same register/structure Romans uses for its closing doxologies, once fixed. |
| 1 Timothy 1:19-20 | Shipwrecked faith; handed over to Satan | Hymenaeus, Alexander | 1 Corinthians 5:5 (parallel disciplinary “deliver…to Satan” formula, future-curriculum reference) | Parallel (intra-Pauline) | Confirm সয়তান transliteration; teach as formal church discipline, not occult curse (see 07 semantic analysis note). |
Chapter 2 — Prayer, One God, One Mediator, Public Worship
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 2:1-2 | Prayer for kings and all in authority | Civic rulers (unnamed) | Jeremiah 29:7 (“seek the welfare of the city… pray to the LORD on its behalf”); Romans 13:1-7 (submission to governing authorities) | Allusion / Parallel to Romans | Teach as the church’s civic posture, not endorsement of a ruler’s religious claims — directly relevant given Manipur’s historic ningthou/Pakhangba royal-divine political theology (already flagged in the Romans baseline’s Kingdom-of-God entry). |
| 1 Timothy 2:3-4 | God our Savior desires all people to be saved | — | Ezekiel 18:23,32 (“I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked… turn and live”); Romans 10:12-13; Romans 11:32 | Allusion / Parallel to Romans | Preserve the genuine universal-offer language exactly as the Romans baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine requires — do not soften “all people.” |
| 1 Timothy 2:5 | ”There is one God” | — | Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema); Isaiah 45:5,21-22 (“I am the LORD, and there is no other”) | Quotation-adjacent (creedal restatement of Shema) | Critical. REUSED/extended God [তেংবাং মপু]. Must be taught unambiguously against both Vaishnava plural-divine-figure devotion and Sanamahi’s plural Umang Lai/Pakhangba/Sanamahi deity structure, per the fixed Language Package convention. |
| 1 Timothy 2:5 | ”One mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” | Christ Jesus; typological background: Moses | Exodus 20:19 (Israel asks Moses to mediate at Sinai); Galatians 3:19-20 (the law “put in place through an intermediary,” future-curriculum parallel); Job 9:33 (“there is no arbiter between us”); Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; 12:24 (future-curriculum parallels, Christ the mediator of a better covenant) | Typology + Messianic reference | Critical, named curriculum doctrine (Christ as the One Mediator). Moses functions as an OT type of the one, final Mediator; the type is fulfilled and superseded, not repeated, in Christ. Must be taught to categorically exclude the maibi/maiba’s ritual mediation of the Umang Lai, and the Vaishnava guru’s mediating role in the guru-parampara initiation (dīkṣā) system, per the doctrine risk registry entry to be established for this curriculum. |
| 1 Timothy 2:6 | ”Gave himself as a ransom for all” | Christ Jesus; typological background: the Suffering Servant | Isaiah 53:10-12 (the Servant’s life as “a guilt offering,” bearing sin for many); Mark 10:45 (“the Son of Man came… to give his life as a ransom for many,” future-curriculum direct verbal parallel) | Messianic reference (direct fulfillment of Isaiah’s Servant Songs) | High. This is the clearest messianic-substitutionary-atonement reference in 1 Timothy; render হন্থোকপগী মথৌ consistently with any future rendering of Mark 10:45. Flag for theologian review alongside Romans’ atonement/propitiation escalation rule (Romans 3:25, already in the Romans instruction set). |
| 1 Timothy 2:8 | Lifting holy [devout] hands in prayer | — | Psalm 141:2; Psalm 134:2 (raised-hands prayer posture); 1 Kings 8:22 (Solomon’s prayer posture) | Allusion | Distinguish ὅσιος (devout) from ἅγιος (REUSED holy, অসেংবা) per the 07 analysis; keep this a distinct rendering. |
| 1 Timothy 2:9-10 | Modest apparel | — | Isaiah 3:16-24 (OT critique of ostentatious female adornment as a sign of societal pride, background parallel); 1 Peter 3:3-4 (future-curriculum direct NT parallel) | Allusion / Parallel (intra-canon) | Teach as heart-modesty; explicitly do not extend to traditional Meitei ceremonial dress (phanek, innaphi) or jewelry, per 07 analysis note. |
| 1 Timothy 2:11-12 | Quietness and submission in the teaching assembly | — | 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (direct Pauline parallel, future curriculum) | Parallel (intra-Pauline) | Critical/High, mandatory theologian review; render ὑποταγή consistently with its 3:4 occurrence in this same letter (see core-passage matrix below). |
| 1 Timothy 2:13-14 | ”Adam was formed first, then Eve… the woman was deceived” | Adam, Eve | Genesis 2:7 (formation of Adam); Genesis 2:21-23 (formation of Eve from Adam); Genesis 3:1-6 (the serpent’s deception of Eve) | Direct OT narrative reference (not verbatim quotation, but explicit narrative citation) | High. This is the letter’s most extensive direct appeal to Genesis narrative. Requires the low-OT-literacy accommodation already flagged in the AI instruction set (assume Old Testament narrative literacy is low) — the Genesis 2-3 creation and fall narrative must be taught as background, not assumed. Confirm Adam/Eve transliterations per Rule 6 above. |
| 1 Timothy 2:13-14 | Adam-typology | Adam | Romans 5:12-21 (Adam as type of the one to come, contrasted with Christ, “the last Adam” pattern — direct cross-curriculum typological link) | Typology / Parallel to Romans | High. Although 1 Timothy 2:13-14 uses Adam and Eve in a different argumentative context (creation-order and deception, not sin-and-death headship), the same proper names and creation-narrative background must be rendered identically to however Romans 5:12-21 eventually renders them, once that curriculum’s Phase 2 output is finalized. Flag for cross-curriculum harmonization. |
| 1 Timothy 2:15 | ”Saved through childbearing” | Eve (implied); women generally | Genesis 3:15-16 (the curse and the promise of the seed, background); Genesis 3:20 (Eve, “mother of all living”) | Allusion (difficult clause) | Critical. See full caution in 07/08: must NOT use REUSED অহানবা without a distinguishing rendering and translator’s note. Sensitive given active Umang Lai/Vaishnava fertility-vow practices. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
CORE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 — Cross-Reference Matrix
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 3:1 | ”Trustworthy saying” formula; aspiring to oversight | — | Recurs 1:15; 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:11; Titus 3:8 (future-curriculum parallels — same Pastoral-corpus formula) | Parallel (intra-Pastorals) | Render this fixed formula identically at every occurrence within 1 Timothy and flag for identical rendering whenever 2 Timothy or Titus curricula are produced. |
| 1 Timothy 3:1-7 | Qualifications for overseer/elder | — | Exodus 18:21 (Jethro’s counsel: appoint capable, God-fearing, trustworthy men as leaders); Numbers 11:16-17 (appointment of seventy elders to share leadership); Titus 1:5-9 (direct, near-verbatim Pauline parallel qualification list, future curriculum) | Typology (OT elder-appointment pattern) + Parallel (intra-Pauline) | High. The OT elder/leader-appointment pattern (Exodus 18; Numbers 11) is the typological background informing the NT office; teach the continuity (recognized, examined, character-qualified communal leadership) while noting the office’s distinctly teaching/doctrine-guarding character in the NT church, per 07/08 analysis of ἐπίσκοπος. Once Titus curriculum exists, its overseer-qualification list must use identical Manipuri renderings to this passage’s list. |
| 1 Timothy 3:2 | ”Husband of one wife” | — | Genesis 2:24 (the one-flesh marriage pattern, creation-order background); Titus 1:6 (direct parallel, future curriculum) | Allusion (creation ordinance) + Parallel (intra-Pauline) | High. See 07/08 full note on live collision with historic and persisting Meitei polygamy practice; theologian framing mandatory. |
| 1 Timothy 3:4-5 | Managing one’s household; caring for God’s church | — | Numbers 12:7 (“Moses my servant… is faithful in all my house” — background type for household-of-God faithfulness, later drawn out fully in Hebrews 3:2-6, future curriculum) | Typology | Sets up the Household of God doctrine’s full statement at 3:15; keep rendering of “household” (ইমুং) consistent between 3:4-5 and 3:15. |
| 1 Timothy 3:6-7 | Novice; the devil’s judgment and snare | — | Genesis 3:1-6 (the serpent/devil as the archetypal accuser and deceiver, background for διάβολος terminology); Job 1:6-12; 2:1-7 (the Accuser, Satan, background for the same figure) | Allusion (canonical figure) | High. Reuse the same transliterated Satan/devil term across both this occurrence and 1:20, 3:11; distinguish sharply from Meitei traditional malevolent-spirit categories per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 3:9 | ”The mystery of the faith” | — | Romans 16:25-26 (“the mystery… now disclosed”); Colossians 1:26-27 (future curriculum, direct parallel “the mystery hidden for ages… now revealed”) | Parallel to Romans | High. Reuse the “revealed, not esoteric” framing established in Romans’ own mystery-adjacent doctrine; contrast explicitly with maibi/Lai Haraoba trance-initiation secrets and Vaishnava guru-parampara dīkṣā, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 3:11 | Women/wives (deacons) | — | (No direct OT/NT quotation; a disputed internal-text question) | N/A — internal exegetical ambiguity | High. Preserve interpretive ambiguity; mandatory theologian review; do not silently resolve, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 3:13 | ”Great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus” | — | Romans 5:1-2 (“we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand”); Ephesians 3:12 (future curriculum, “boldness and access with confidence through faith in him”) | Parallel to Romans | Medium-High. Reuse REUSED faith [থাজবা] and connect explicitly to the Romans Assurance of Salvation doctrine; distinguish from ecstatic bhakti/trance-derived confidence per 07/08. |
Chapter 3 (continued, 3:14-16) — Household of God, Pillar of Truth, Christ-Hymn
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 3:15 | ”Household of God… pillar and buttress of truth” | — | Numbers 12:7 (Moses faithful in God’s house, typological background); Exodus 25-27 (the tabernacle as God’s dwelling among his people, background for “God’s house” language); 1 Kings 7:15-22 (the two pillars, Jachin and Boaz, of Solomon’s temple — background image for στῦλος) | Typology (temple/tabernacle imagery) | Medium-High. The pillar/foundation metaphor draws on Israel’s temple architecture as its OT background; teach as this structural-support image, explicitly distinct from the Umang Lai sacred-grove ritual marker/pole, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 3:15 | ”Church of the living God” | — | Deuteronomy 5:26; Joshua 3:10; Psalm 42:2; Daniel 6:26 (the recurring OT “living God” polemic against lifeless idols) | Allusion (OT idol-polemic pattern) | High. “Living God” language carries an implicit contrast with idols throughout the OT; while Manipuri Vaishnavism and Sanamahism both hold their deities to be personally active (not merely lifeless images), this OT polemic pattern should be taught with care, paired with Romans 1:23’s “images” language, avoiding a dismissive tone toward either living tradition. |
| 1 Timothy 3:16 | The Christ-hymn: manifested in flesh, vindicated in Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory | Christ Jesus | Romans 1:3-4 (descended from David according to the flesh; declared Son of God by the resurrection); Philippians 2:6-11 (future curriculum, close hymnic parallel); John 1:14 (“the Word became flesh”); Psalm 68:18 (ascension background, cited in Ephesians 4:8, future curriculum) | Messianic reference + direct Parallel to Romans (Critical) | CRITICAL. Every clause must reuse the exact fixed Romans-baseline rendering for its corresponding doctrine, per Rendering-Consistency Rule 2 above. This is the single densest concentration of Critical-tier doctrinal restatement in 1 Timothy. |
Chapter 4 — Apostasy, False Asceticism, Godliness in Training
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 4:1 | ”In later times some will depart from the faith” | — | Deuteronomy 13:1-5 (warning against prophets who lead Israel astray); Daniel 11:32-35 (end-times apostasy pattern); Matthew 24:11-12; 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (future-curriculum parallels) | Allusion / Parallel (intra-canon eschatological pattern) | High. Teach as continuous with the whole-Bible apostasy-warning pattern, not a novel claim; reuse REUSED faith [থাজবা]. |
| 1 Timothy 4:1-3 | Deceiving spirits, doctrines of demons, forbidding marriage/foods | — | Genesis 1:26-31 (goodness of creation, background for 4:4-5’s rebuttal); Leviticus 11 (OT food-purity laws, contrastive background — the false teachers’ error is not the same as OT dietary law, which had its own covenantal purpose now fulfilled) | Allusion (contrastive) | Critical. See 07/08 full caution: must not be heard as a blanket verdict on Sanamahi spirit-world categories (Umang Lai) or on any dietary discipline practiced in either living tradition. Mandatory theologian review with careful framing. |
| 1 Timothy 4:4-5 | ”Everything created by God is good… made holy by the word of God and prayer” | — | Genesis 1:31 (“God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good”) | Quotation-adjacent (direct thematic restatement) | High. Must be paired explicitly with 4:1-3 as the rebuttal to false asceticism; reuse REUSED holy [অসেংবা] with care, since this is a distinct declarative sense (“made holy/set apart through thanksgiving”) rather than the moral-purity sense elsewhere. |
| 1 Timothy 4:10 | ”The living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe” | — | Deuteronomy 5:26 (living God, as above); Isaiah 45:22 (“Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth”) | Allusion / Messianic-adjacent (universal salvation invitation) | High. Preserve both the universal-offer clause and the “especially of those who believe” qualifier, per Romans’ Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine; do not drop either half. |
| 1 Timothy 4:13-14 | Prophecy, laying on of hands, the council of elders | Timothy | Numbers 27:18-23 (Moses commissions Joshua by the laying on of hands, OT background type); Deuteronomy 34:9 (Joshua filled with the spirit of wisdom through Moses’ laid-on hands) | Typology | Medium. The OT commissioning-by-hand-laying pattern (Moses→Joshua) typologically informs this NT commissioning of Timothy; must be distinguished from a maibi/maiba’s ritual touch or a Vaishnava guru’s diksha hand-gesture, per 07/08. |
Chapter 5 — Widows, Elders, the Household of Faith
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 5:3-16 | Care for widows | — | Exodus 22:22-24 (do not afflict any widow); Deuteronomy 24:19-21 (gleaning provision for widows); Deuteronomy 14:29 (the widow among those provided for by the tithe); Isaiah 1:17 (plead the widow’s cause); James 1:27 (future-curriculum direct parallel) | Allusion (sustained OT ethical-legal background) | High. This entire section stands in direct continuity with a major OT covenant-ethics theme (widow-care as a test of covenant faithfulness); teach explicitly as continuity, not a new NT innovation — a strong positive point of contact with Meitei family/clan (yumnak) obligation norms already noted in 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 5:4 | Repaying/showing godliness to one’s own household | — | Exodus 20:12 (honor your father and mother, the Fifth Commandment, background) | Allusion | High. Connects Godliness/Contentment doctrine to Care-for-Widows doctrine via the Decalogue’s household-honor commandment. |
| 1 Timothy 5:8 | ”Denied the faith… worse than an unbeliever” | — | (No direct OT citation; intensifies the Exodus 20:12/Deuteronomy 24 household-provision ethic above) | Allusion (intensification) | High. Preserve full rhetorical force; do not soften. |
| 1 Timothy 5:18 | ”You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain” | — | Deuteronomy 25:4 | Direct Quotation | High. Render as dignified direct quotation, per Rendering-Consistency Rule 5. Also echoed at 1 Corinthians 9:9 (future curriculum, must match). |
| 1 Timothy 5:18 | ”The laborer deserves his wages” | — | Luke 10:7 (direct quotation of Jesus’ words, treated by Paul as “Scripture”); background: Leviticus 19:13; Deuteronomy 24:14-15 (prompt payment of hired laborers) | Direct Quotation + Allusion (OT legal background) | Critical for the doctrine of Scripture. Paul’s pairing of a Gospel saying with Deuteronomy under the single introductory formula “Scripture says” is a significant canon-of-Scripture data point; connect explicitly to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine (Critical-tier in the Romans baseline) and its associated Puya Meithaba cultural-sensitivity note. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 1 Timothy 5:19 | ”On the evidence of two or three witnesses” | — | Deuteronomy 19:15 | Direct Quotation (adapted) | Medium. Render Deuteronomy 19:15’s due-process principle plainly and consistently wherever it recurs across curricula (cf. Matthew 18:16, future curriculum). |
| 1 Timothy 5:21 | Charge before God, Christ Jesus, and the elect angels | — | Deuteronomy 4:26; 30:19 (OT “I call heaven and earth to witness” solemn-charge formula, background pattern) | Allusion (formulaic) | Medium. Render as a solemn, formal charge; standard vocabulary. |
Chapter 6 — Godliness and Contentment, Love of Money, the Good Confession, Guarding the Deposit
| Passage (1 Tim) | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Connection Type | Manipuri Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Timothy 6:1 | ”So that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled” | — | Isaiah 52:5 / Ezekiel 36:20 (LXX-echoed “the name of God is blasphemed among the nations because of you”); directly paralleled at Romans 2:24 | Allusion + Direct Parallel to Romans | High. This is a verbatim-pattern echo of Romans 2:24; the Manipuri rendering must match however Romans 2:24 is rendered once that curriculum’s Phase 2 output exists, to preserve the deliberate intertextual echo. |
| 1 Timothy 6:6-8 | Godliness with contentment; brought nothing into the world | — | Job 1:21 (“naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return”); Ecclesiastes 5:15 (a similar reflection on bringing nothing out of this life) | Allusion (wisdom-literature background) | Medium-High. Reuse the Godliness/Contentment doctrine’s Critical-tier note; distinguish from Vaishnava vairagya renunciation-as-merit, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 6:10 | ”The love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” | — | Proverbs 15:27; Proverbs 28:20-22 (wisdom-literature warnings against greed, background); Ecclesiastes 5:10 | Allusion (wisdom-literature background) | High. Preserve the full indictment force; must not be softened, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 6:11 | ”Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” | — | Romans 6:12-13; Romans 8:4 (walking according to the Spirit’s righteousness) | Parallel to Romans | REUSED righteousness [অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক] and faith [থাজবা] must appear exactly as fixed; new godliness term integrated alongside without altering the REUSED terms. |
| 1 Timothy 6:12-13 | ”Fight the good fight… the good confession… Christ Jesus, who…before Pontius Pilate made the good confession” | Christ Jesus; Timothy | John 18:33-37 (Christ’s testimony before Pilate, future-curriculum direct narrative source); Romans 10:9-10 (the Lordship confession) | Messianic reference + Direct Parallel to Romans (Critical) | CRITICAL. Per Rendering-Consistency Rule 3, this confession family must align with the fixed Romans 10:9-10 rendering. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 1 Timothy 6:15-16 | ”King of kings and Lord of lords… who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light” | — | Deuteronomy 10:17 (“God of gods and Lord of lords”); Psalm 104:2 (“covering yourself with light as with a garment”); Exodus 33:20 (“man shall not see me and live”) | Allusion (direct titular echo of Deuteronomy 10:17) + Messianic-adjacent (applied to Christ) | CRITICAL. Directly parallels Romans 9:5’s “God over all, blessed forever” (Deity of Christ doctrine); must reuse REUSED Lord [মপু ইবুংগো] and glory-adjacent [মতিক চাউবা] framing exactly, and must not resonate with the historic Pakhangba royal-divine-lineage political theology, per 07/08. |
| 1 Timothy 6:20 | ”Guard the deposit entrusted to you” | — | Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32 (“you shall not add to or take away from the word”); 2 Timothy 1:14 (future-curriculum direct restatement, “guard the good deposit”) | Allusion + Parallel (intra-Pastorals) | CRITICAL. Connects directly to the Romans Inspiration-of-Scripture doctrine and its Puya Meithaba sensitivity note; teach as guarding a living, openly transmitted apostolic doctrine, not a fragile lost relic, per 07/08. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 1 Timothy 6:20 | ”Falsely called knowledge” | — | Genesis 3:1-5 (the serpent’s promise of hidden knowledge, “you will be like God, knowing,” background pattern for all false-knowledge claims) | Allusion (typological pattern) | High. Frames the whole book’s opening (1:4, myths) and closing (6:20, false knowledge) as bookended warnings against the same root error (speculative, ungrounded religious claims), first modeled in Eden. |
