Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Ephesians (Full Book) | English → Manipuri
Scope and Method
This analysis covers the entire book of Ephesians, chapters 1–6, in the original Koine Greek. Per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:
- Part 1 treats the core passage, Ephesians 2:1–10, verse-by-verse, with every load-bearing term analyzed across: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Manipuri) rendering risk.
- Part 2 treats every chapter of Ephesians (1–6) in canonical order with the same fields for each chapter’s load-bearing terms. Ephesians 2:11-22 (the remainder of ch. 2 not covered by the core passage) is included in the Chapter 2 section.
- Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans
translation_memory.jsonare reused exactly, flagged “(Romans TM — reused).” New terms required by Ephesians’ distinctive doctrines (mystery, predestination, body of Christ, dividing wall, armor of God, household codes, etc.) are proposed here for the first time and must be added to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 / Phase 2 tooling. - Manipuri destination text is given in Bengali script per the baseline’s script convention, with transliteration.
- All risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the baseline
doctrine_risk_registry.jsondefinitions. - Every doctrinal-collision note engages Manipur’s live dual religious landscape — Sanamahism (Sanamahi, Pakhangba, Umang Lai, Lai Haraoba, maibi/maiba ritual specialists) and Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Krishna-Radha devotion, Ras Lila, bhakti, murti/temple worship) — as two currently practiced traditions, never as a superseded-animism-vs-living-Hinduism sequence.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Ephesians 2:1-10 (Verse-by-Verse)
Ephesians 2:1
Greek: Καὶ ὑμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| dead | νεκρός / nekros | corpse-like, lifeless | physical death; metaphorical spiritual deadness; powerlessness | ”dead,” “lifeless” | Spiritual deadness — total inability to respond to God apart from grace, prior to regeneration | থাওয়ায়দা সিবা (thawaida siba) — High. NEW TERM. Must be sharply distinguished from Sanamahi ancestor-spirit veneration (Apokpa), in which “the dead” remain active, honored spiritual presences within family and clan life. Ephesians’ “spiritually dead” describes the living unbeliever’s standing before God, not a state of the departed. |
| trespasses | παράπτωμα / paraptōma | a false step, a falling beside the path | specific acts of wrongdoing, distinct in nuance from ἁμαρτία’s “missing the mark" | "trespasses,” “transgressions,” “sins” | Paired with “sins” for rhetorical fullness; the acts that constitute the state of spiritual death | অশোয়বা (ashoiba) — Medium. NEW TERM, distinct from পাপ. Keep পাপ (baseline) for ἁμαρτία and অশোয়বা for παράπτωμα so Ephesians 2:1’s doubled Greek phrase is not flattened into a single repeated word. |
| sins | ἁμαρτία / hamartia | missing the mark | moral transgression before a personal God | ”sins,” “sin” | See baseline entry | পাপ (pap) — High (Romans TM — reused). |
Ephesians 2:2
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| walked | περιπατέω / peripateō | to walk about | habitual conduct of life; lifestyle | ”walked,” “lived,” “conducted yourselves” | The believer’s former manner of life before conversion — this verb becomes the book’s key ethical-life metaphor (4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15) | চৎনবা (chatnaba) — Medium. NEW TERM but reuses the root already embedded in the baseline compound অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness = “righteous conduct/walk”). This continuity should be taught explicitly: “walking” language throughout Ephesians and “righteousness” in Romans share the same conduct-root. |
| course/age of this world | αἰών τοῦ κόσμου τούτου / aiōn tou kosmou toutou | the age of this world-system | the present, fallen world-order as opposed to God’s kingdom age | ”ways of this world,” “course of this world” | The dominant value-system unbelievers follow apart from Christ | Rendered descriptively in context (no standalone glossary term required); handled together with লৈপাক (kingdom) contrast — see baseline kingdom_of_god note. |
| prince/ruler of the power of the air | ὁ ἄρχων τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος / ho archōn tēs exousias tou aeros | the ruler of the authority of the air | Satan as a personal, singular spiritual ruler over a fallen spiritual-cosmic order | ”the prince of the power of the air,” “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” | Satan’s derivative, temporary, doomed authority — never co-equal with God | Handled together with devil/Satan and spiritual forces of evil, below — Critical. |
| sons of disobedience | υἱοὶ τῆς ἀπειθείας / huioi tēs apeitheias | sons of not-being-persuaded | idiomatic Hebraism for “people characterized by disobedience" | "sons of disobedience,” “those who are disobedient” | Describes humanity’s default condition apart from grace | Built on ইনবা যাদবা (not-obeying) — see obedience_of_faith (Romans TM — reused root ইনবা) — Medium. |
| devil / Satan | διάβολος / Σατανᾶς / diabolos / Satanas | slanderer / adversary | the personal, singular fallen spiritual being who opposes God and accuses humanity | ”devil,” “Satan,” “the evil one” | A specific, personal fallen angelic being, not one of many hostile spirits or asuras in an open mythological cast | শয়তান (Shoitan) — Critical. NEW TERM (transliterated loanword, following established South Asian Christian-translation convention). Must be taught as a single, specific, personal fallen being — never conflated with a hostile Umang Lai spirit (which Sanamahi practice generally treats as a guardian deity to be honored, not a personal moral adversary of God) nor with an asura/demon figure from Vaishnava Krishna-mythology (e.g., Kamsa, Putana), which belong to a different narrative and cosmological framework. |
Ephesians 2:3
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| flesh | σάρξ / sarx | flesh, body-tissue | the fallen human nature/disposition opposed to God’s Spirit | ”flesh,” “sinful nature” | The corrupted human nature common to all, Jew and Gentile alike | Rendered contextually as “মীওইগী থাজেংনা তাদবা ওইনৈ” (the body’s sinful inclination); no standalone glossary term needed beyond context handling — Medium. |
| children of wrath by nature | τέκνα φύσει ὀργῆς / tekna physei orgēs | children, by nature, of wrath | inborn condition under God’s righteous judgment prior to Christ, applying to “all,” including Paul himself (“we all”) | “children of wrath,” “objects of wrath,” “deserving wrath” | Universal human accountability — no one, Jew or Gentile, is exempt by birth or heritage | Built on universal_human_accountability (Romans TM doctrine) + wrath, below — High. |
| wrath (of God) | ὀργή / orgē | settled anger | God’s holy, judicial displeasure against sin, distinct from impulsive rage | ”wrath,” “anger,” “judgment” | God’s personal, righteous response to sin, resolved only through Christ’s atoning work, never through ritual appeasement | তেংবাং মপুগী অহোংবা (Tengban Mapugi ahongba) — High. NEW TERM. Must be taught as the settled judicial displeasure of a personal, holy God against sin — not an impersonal karmic consequence accruing across lifetimes (a framework readers from a Vaishnava background may default to), and not a displeased household or Umang Lai spirit whose favor can be restored through ritual offerings within Lai Haraoba or Sanamahi household practice. Ephesians 2:3-5 teaches that wrath is resolved only by grace through Christ, never by ritual remedy. |
Ephesians 2:4
Greek: ὁ δὲ θεὸς πλούσιος ὢν ἐν ἐλέει, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| rich in mercy | πλούσιος ἐν ἐλέει / plousios en eleei | rich/wealthy in mercy | abundance metaphor applied to God’s compassion | ”rich in mercy,” “abounding in mercy” | Sets up the grace argument of vv. 5-9: God’s rescue originates entirely in his own abundant compassion, not human merit | ধন (dhan, “riches/wealth”) — Low, combined with মেরসি below. |
| mercy | ἔλεος / eleos | compassion shown to the miserable/helpless | pity extended to those in a wretched condition, distinct from grace’s focus on the undeserved gift itself | ”mercy,” “compassion,” “pity” | God’s compassionate response to humanity’s helpless, dead condition (v.1) — the emotional/relational counterpart to grace’s legal/gift dimension | চানবা (chanba) — High. NEW TERM. CAUTION: Gaudiya Vaishnava devotional literature widely available in Manipur (including ISKCON-influenced material) frequently glosses Krishna’s কৃপা (already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for “grace”) in English as “mercy.” Any Manipuri catechesis on Ephesians 2:4 must explicitly teach that চানবা here names God’s compassion toward the helpless-dead sinner (an unconditioned rescue, v.1-3), not a bhakti-responsive favor granted to an already-devoted worshiper. |
| love | ἀγάπη / agapē | selfless, committed love | God’s self-giving covenant love, distinct from erotic or merely affectionate love | ”love,” “great love” | The motive behind God’s mercy and grace toward the spiritually dead | Rendered contextually as “নিংশিংবা/ইইৎপা” (committed love/affection); handled fully in Chapter 5 notes (Christ’s love for the church) — Medium. |
Ephesians 2:5
Greek: καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ — χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| made alive together with Christ | συζωοποιέω / syzōopoieō | to make alive together with | union with Christ’s own resurrection life, applied to the spiritually dead | ”made us alive together,” “quickened us together” | Regeneration is inseparable from union with the risen Christ — not a separate, generic “spiritual awakening” | Built on সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা (Romans TM resurrection root) + ক্রিস্তোগা লোয়ননা (united with Christ) — Critical, given the resurrection-term forbidden-substitution rule (never পুনর্জন্ম/rebirth). |
| by grace you have been saved | τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι / tē gar chariti este sesōsmenoi | by grace you are having-been-saved | perfect tense: a completed past action with continuing present result — salvation is a settled, finished status, not an ongoing process to be maintained | ”by grace you have been saved,” “it is by grace you are saved” | THESIS-ADJACENT STATEMENT (echoed and completed in v.8). Salvation’s ground is grace alone; its tense (perfect passive) shows it is God’s finished, unrepeatable act received by the believer, not a status requiring ongoing devotional maintenance | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাংনা অহানবা ফংলে (grace + salvation, both Romans TM — reused) — Critical. This half-verse anticipates v.8 and must render identically at both occurrences within the curriculum for pedagogical consistency (cf. baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 consistency rule, extended here). |
Ephesians 2:6
Greek: καὶ συνήγειρεν καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| raised us up with him | συνεγείρω / synegeirō | to raise up together with | the believer’s share in Christ’s resurrection, already accomplished in union with him | ”raised us up,” “raised us with him” | Realized/inaugurated eschatology — believers are already spiritually raised, not merely promised a future rising | সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা (Romans TM — reused) + লোয়ননা (united/together) — Critical. |
| seated us with him in the heavenly places | συγκαθίζω ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις / synkathizō en tois epouraniois | to seat together with, in the heavenly [things/places] | believers’ present spiritual co-enthronement with the risen and ascended Christ | ”seated us with him in the heavenly realms/places” | Believers already share, in Christ, the position of victorious authority described in 1:20-21 | স্বর্গগী মফমশিং (swargagi mafamshing) — Medium. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from the Umang Lai spirit-realm honored at sacred groves in Sanamahi cosmology, and from Vaikuntha/Goloka, Krishna’s heavenly abode sought through bhakti devotion (already flagged in the baseline salvation entry as a rejected framework for Christian salvation-hope). The believer’s present position “in Christ” is a status of union, not a devotional destination reached by merit or trance. |
Ephesians 2:7
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| surpassing riches of his grace | τὸ ὑπερβάλλον πλοῦτος τῆς χάριτος / to hyperballon ploutos tēs charitos | the exceeding/overflowing wealth of grace | intensified metaphor of grace’s abundance, displayed across future ages | ”immeasurable riches of his grace,” “surpassing riches” | God’s purpose in saving the church is to display grace’s magnitude for all future time — grace is not a bare transaction but an eternal exhibition | ধন (riches, new term, Low) + মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (Romans TM grace — reused) — High in combination, since it intensifies the Critical grace doctrine. |
| kindness | χρηστότης / chrēstotēs | goodness, kindness | God’s benevolent disposition expressed in action | ”kindness,” “goodness” | The manner in which grace is expressed toward believers | Rendered contextually as “থৌগাল” (goodness/kindness); no separate glossary entry required — Low. |
Ephesians 2:8
Greek: τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι διὰ πίστεως· καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν, θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| by grace…through faith | τῇ χάριτι…διὰ πίστεως / tē chariti…dia pisteōs | by grace…through faith | grace as ground/cause; faith as means/channel — faith is not itself the meritorious cause of salvation | ”by grace…through faith” | CURRICULUM THESIS STATEMENT, structurally parallel in weight to Romans 1:16-17. Must be rendered identically wherever quoted across all curriculum documents. | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাংনা, থাজবাগী মখলদা (grace + faith, both Romans TM — reused) — Critical. Escalate to human theologian review at every occurrence; treat with the same cross-document consistency rule the baseline applies to Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28. |
| not your own doing | οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν / ouk ex hymōn | not from you | salvation’s source excludes the human self as originating cause | ”not of yourselves,” “not your own doing” | Directly excludes any human contribution, devotional or otherwise, as the source of salvation | Rendered contextually, reinforcing the grace/faith clause above — Critical. |
| gift | δῶρον / dōron | a gift, a present | something given freely, without payment or earning | ”gift,” “the gift of God” | Salvation itself, named explicitly as God’s gift — reinforces grace’s unmerited character | খুদোল (khudol) — High (Romans TM root — reused from spiritual_gifts থাওয়াইগী খুদোল). Same root, applied here to the gift of salvation itself, not merely enablement-gifts; this continuity should be taught. |
Ephesians 2:9
Greek: οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| works | ἔργα / erga | deeds, actions | human effort/achievement offered toward one’s own standing before God | ”works,” “deeds,” “human effort” | Explicitly excluded as any part of the ground of salvation — the direct Ephesian counterpart to Romans 4:4-5 and 11:5-6 | থবক (thabak) — Critical. NEW TERM but doctrinally load-bearing at the exact fault-line the baseline flags for grace (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6). Must be explicitly contrasted with Manipuri Vaishnavism’s bhakti framework, in which devotional service (সেবা, already forbidden as a gloss for obedience_of_faith in the baseline) is understood to build toward Krishna’s favor. Ephesians 2:9 must be taught as directly foreclosing any works-based or seva-based path to salvation. |
| boast | καυχάομαι / kauchaomai | to boast, to glory in | taking credit, claiming grounds for pride | ”boast,” “brag,” “take credit” | The purpose-clause explaining why salvation excludes works: to remove every ground for human self-congratulation before God | চাউথোকপা (chauthokpa) — High. NEW TERM. This is the passage’s rhetorical hinge (parallel to Romans 3:27; 4:2). Must be rendered so as to preserve the full force of “no one may boast” — no softening toward “should boast less” or similar. |
Ephesians 2:10
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| workmanship | ποίημα / poiēma | a thing made, a work of craftsmanship | that which is made/fashioned by a maker (the only NT occurrences: here and Romans 1:20, of creation) | “workmanship,” “handiwork,” “masterpiece” | Believers are God’s own crafted work — reinforcing that salvation, and the transformed life that follows it, both originate in God’s action, not human self-making | শেমগৎপিবা (shemgatpiba) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on শেম্বা (to make/create/build), a genuine Meitei verb root. |
| created | κτίζω / ktizō | to create, to bring into being | divine creative action, applied here to the believer’s new spiritual existence “in Christ Jesus" | "created,” “made” | New-creation language: salvation constitutes a genuinely new act of God’s creative power, not a self-improvement or an unlocking of latent devotional potential | শেম্বা (shemba) — Medium. NEW TERM, same root as above. |
| good works | ἔργα ἀγαθά / erga agatha | good deeds | works that flow from salvation, sharply distinguished from ἔργα in v.9, which are excluded as its ground | ”good works,” “good deeds” | The believer’s genuine, Spirit-empowered obedience is the fruit of salvation, never its root — this ordering (grace → faith → salvation → good works) must never be reversed in translation or teaching | অফবা থবক (aphaba thabak) — Medium, but flagged High in combination with v.9’s থবক, since Manipuri readers must clearly see the same root word (থবক) used twice in one short passage with two theologically opposite functions (excluded as ground in v.9; included as fruit in v.10). A translator note distinguishing these two uses is mandatory. |
| walk | περιπατέω / peripateō | to walk about | see v.2 — habitual conduct of life | ”walk,” “live,” “do” | The good-works life for which believers are created is a walk — an ongoing, Spirit-enabled manner of life, not a one-time meritorious act | চৎনবা (chatnaba) — Medium (root shared with baseline righteousness compound — reused). Frames the whole Doctrine of “Walking in Newness of Life” for this curriculum, first introduced here and developed fully in chs. 4-5. |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 (1:1-23)
Salutation, the doxology of election/predestination/adoption/redemption (1:3-14), and Paul’s prayer for the church’s enlightenment (1:15-23).
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apostle | ἀπόστολος / apostolos | one sent | see baseline | ”apostle” | Paul’s authoritative, Christ-commissioned office | তবিদগী থাবিরকপা — Medium (Romans TM — reused) |
| saints | ἅγιοι / hagioi | holy ones | see baseline | ”saints,” “God’s holy people” | Corporate address to all Ephesian believers | অসেংবা মীওই — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| grace / peace | χάρις / εἰρήνη | see baseline | see baseline | ”grace and peace” | Standard Pauline greeting | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং / ইনগবা — Critical / Medium (Romans TM — reused) |
| blessed / blessing | εὐλογητός / εὐλογία / eulogētos / eulogia | well-spoken-of; a good word pronounced | God’s own praiseworthiness (v.3a); the spiritual benefits God gives (v.3b) | “blessed,” “blessing” | Doxological opening naming God as the source of every spiritual blessing “in the heavenly places” | য়াইফবা (yaifaba) — Medium. NEW TERM (a genuine Meitei term for “blessed/fortunate”). Distinguish God’s spiritual blessing from generic notions of worldly fortune or the ritual blessings (আশীর্বাদ) dispensed by a Vaishnava priest or a Sanamahi maiba/maibi at a life-cycle rite. |
| chosen / elect | ἐκλέγομαι / eklegomai | to choose out | see baseline election | ”chose us,” “elect” | God’s sovereign choice of believers “before the foundation of the world” (1:4) | তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| predestined | προορίζω / proorizō | to mark out/determine beforehand | God’s sovereign decision made prior to time, for adoption specifically | ”predestined,” “foreordained,” “destined” | The temporal-priority companion to election — God’s plan of adoption fixed “before” any human response | মমাংগী মথংদা খনবা (mamangi mathangda khanba) — Critical. NEW TERM, built on the baseline’s own খনবা (choose) root for continuity. Must never be rendered with ৱাইফম (impersonal fate, explicitly forbidden in the baseline election entry), nor read against the historic Meitei royal-lineage framework of divinely predetermined kingship descending from Pakhangba, nor against any astrological determinism some Manipuri Vaishnava practice engages through jyotish. Predestination in Ephesians is a personal, relational, loving decision (v.5, “in love”), not an impersonal cosmic mechanism. |
| adoption | υἱοθεσία / huiothesia | see baseline | see baseline | ”adoption,” “sonship” | Believers’ full inheritance-status as God’s children, decided beforehand in love | মচা ওইনা লৌবা — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| redemption | ἀπολύτρωσις / apolytrōsis | a buying back/releasing through payment of a ransom-price | deliverance secured by a price paid (here, “through his blood,” v.7) | “redemption,” “ransom” | Christ’s blood as the completed, historical price of the believer’s release from sin’s bondage | মমল পীদুনা হানবা (mamal piduna hanba) — Critical. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from any ritual ransom or offering economy — e.g., offerings made to appease an Umang Lai or ancestral spirit within Sanamahi ritual practice, or the karmic-debt logic of prayaschitta atonement rituals already flagged under the baseline “sin” entry. Redemption is a single, finished historical transaction (Christ’s blood), not an ongoing ritual debt-servicing relationship with a spiritual power. |
| forgiveness (of trespasses) | ἄφεσις / aphesis | a sending-away, a release | pardon of specific wrongdoing | ”forgiveness” | Paired with redemption (1:7) as one of its immediate benefits | ময়ামদা কোকপা (mayamda kokpa) — Medium. Note: the baseline explicitly rejected this phrase as too narrow a substitute for justification (which requires the fuller অচুম্বা ওইহনবা). Here, however, it is the correct standalone term for forgiveness itself, a distinct though related concept. Teach the distinction explicitly: forgiveness (pardon of specific offenses) is a benefit of redemption; justification (being declared righteous) is the fuller forensic status. |
| mystery | μυστήριον / mystērion | a secret matter, disclosed only to initiates | God’s formerly hidden redemptive plan, now revealed in the gospel (central to Ephesians, cf. 1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19) | “mystery,” “secret plan” | God’s eternal, previously concealed purpose to unite all things in Christ and to unite Jew and Gentile in one body — now fully disclosed, not still hidden | লুকখিবা থৌরাং (lukkhiba thourang) — Critical. NEW TERM, built on the baseline’s থৌরাং (purposive plan, from providence). CAUTION: this is one of the highest-salience collision risks in the whole book. Gaudiya Vaishnavism has a well-developed category of esoteric/confidential devotional knowledge (rasa theology, guhya-tattva) disclosed progressively to advancing initiates, expressed liturgically in Ras Lila performance; Sanamahi tradition likewise holds ritual/cosmological knowledge as the guarded province of maibi/maiba specialists and the puya textual tradition. Ephesians’ “mystery,” by contrast, is a plan now fully and publicly disclosed to all believers through the gospel, not a graded esoteric secret reserved for advanced initiates or ritual specialists. This distinction must be taught explicitly wherever μυστήριον occurs (1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19). |
| inheritance | κληρονομία / klēronomia | an allotted portion received by an heir | the believer’s promised, guaranteed share in God’s eternal purposes | ”inheritance,” “portion” | Believers’ guaranteed future possession, secured now by the Spirit as a “guarantee” (v.14) | চাদান (chadan) — High. NEW TERM. As with baseline’s adoption entry, must be taught explicitly against traditional Meitei clan (yumnak) inheritance, which runs through birth lineage and is administered by clan elders — the believer’s inheritance in Christ is received by adoption/faith, not birth-lineage succession. |
| sealed | σφραγίζω / sphragizō | to stamp with a seal | marking as authentic, owned, and secured | ”sealed,” “marked,” “stamped” | The Holy Spirit as God’s mark of ownership and guarantee on believers (1:13; 4:30) | চুম্মৎ পীবা (chummat piba) — High. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from the external ritual markings of Manipuri Vaishnava devotional identity — tilaka forehead-markings and, in some Gaudiya lineages, tapta-mudrankana (branding with heated metal stamps of Vishnu’s emblems) applied at initiation — which are visible, ritual, external marks of devotee status. The Spirit’s seal is an internal, invisible, divinely-applied guarantee, not an external devotional badge earned or received through a rite of passage. |
| guarantee / down payment | ἀρραβών / arrabōn | a pledge, a first installment | a partial payment guaranteeing the full payment to come | ”guarantee,” “deposit,” “pledge,” “down payment” | The Holy Spirit’s present indwelling as the guarantee of the believer’s future full inheritance | মমাংগী পীথোকপা (mamangi pithokpa) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on the imputed_righteousness root পীথোকপা (given/credited) for continuity. |
| wisdom / revelation | σοφία / ἀποκάλυψις / sophia / apokalypsis | skillful understanding / an unveiling | God-given insight and disclosed knowledge of God himself | ”wisdom,” “revelation,” “insight” | The content of Paul’s prayer (1:17) — that believers would truly know God, not merely possess information about him | য়াম্না খংবা (yamna khangba, wisdom) / ফোংদোকপা (phongdokpa, revelation — reusing the prophecy root) — Medium. Confirm য়াম্না খংবা’s naturalness with a Manipuri-speaking theologian before wide deployment. |
| power (at work in believers) | δύναμις / dynamis | see baseline power_of_god | see baseline | ”power,” “mighty power” | The same resurrection-power that raised Christ, now at work in believers (1:19-20) | তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| resurrection / seated at the right hand | ἀνάστασις / ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις | see baseline resurrection | see baseline | ”raised him,” “seated him” | Christ’s bodily resurrection and present heavenly enthronement, the ground of the church’s hope | সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা — Critical (Romans TM — reused); স্বর্গগী মফমশিং (heavenly places) — Medium, see 2:6 above. |
| head over the church / body / fullness | κεφαλή / σῶμα / πλήρωμα / kephalē / sōma / plērōma | head / body / fullness | Christ’s headship over the church as his body, which is described as “the fullness of him who fills all in all" | "head,” “body,” “the fullness of him” | Introduces the book’s central ecclesiology metaphor, developed fully in chs. 4-5 | কোক (head) / ক্রিস্তোগী হাকচাং (body of Christ) / মপুং ফাবা (fullness) — all High/Critical NEW TERMS, see full discussion under Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 below. |
| principalities and powers | ἀρχή, ἐξουσία, δύναμις, κυριότης / archē, exousia, dynamis, kyriotēs | rule, authority, power, lordship | ranked spiritual/cosmic powers, here shown subjected under Christ’s feet (1:21-22) | “rule and authority, power and dominion,” “every name” | Christ’s supremacy over every spiritual power, named and unnamed — first occurrence of a theme developed fully in 2:2, 3:10, and 6:12 | অসোইবা থাওয়াই পাংগলশিং (asoiba thawai panggalshing) — Critical, see full discussion under Chapter 6 below. |
Chapter 2 (2:11-22) — remainder of chapter not covered in the core passage above
Note: Ephesians 2:1-10 was fully treated verse-by-verse in Part 1. This section covers 2:11-22.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| circumcision / uncircumcision | περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία | see context | ethnic-covenantal marker distinguishing Jew from Gentile | ”circumcision,” “Gentiles” | The old covenant-sign boundary now abolished in Christ | সুন্নত (loanword) — Low, contextual only; paired with গেন্টাইলস / অতোপ্পা ফুরুপ (Romans TM gentiles — reused) — Medium. |
| far off / brought near | μακράν / ἐγγύς | distant / near | spatial metaphor for covenant exclusion vs. inclusion | ”far off,” “brought near,” “near” | Gentiles, formerly excluded from Israel’s covenants, are now brought near by Christ’s blood | Rendered contextually; no standalone glossary term required. |
| dividing wall of hostility | τὸ μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ / to mesotoichon tou phragmou | the middle-wall of the fence | a literal architectural image (echoing the Jerusalem Temple’s barrier separating the Court of the Gentiles) applied metaphorically to the Jew-Gentile covenant division | ”dividing wall,” “wall of hostility,” “barrier” | Christ has torn down, not merely reduced, the covenantal barrier separating Jew and Gentile | খায়দোকপগী লেপ্পা (khaidokpagi leppa) — High. NEW TERM, doctrine Unity of Jews and Gentiles/Mystery of Christ. This must be taught as resolving a specific, historical, covenantal division (Jew/Gentile, Torah-based), and must not be casually mapped onto Manipur’s contemporary inter-community ethnic tensions, which address a different (social/political) kind of division — the same caution the baseline registry already applies to unity_of_jews_and_gentiles in Romans. |
| one new man / new humanity | εἷς καινός ἄνθρωπος / heis kainos anthrōpos | one new person | a genuinely new corporate humanity created in Christ, not a merged hybrid of the two old categories | ”one new humanity,” “one new man,” “one new people” | Christ does not simply reconcile Jew and Gentile as equals within the old categories, but creates an entirely new corporate identity in himself | অমা অনৌবা মীওই (ama anouba miwoi) — High. NEW TERM. Note the shared root with individual “new self” (4:24, see Chapter 4) — a translator note must distinguish the corporate sense here (a new humanity, 2:15) from the individual anthropological sense there (a believer’s new nature). |
| reconciliation | ἀποκαταλλάσσω / apokatallassō | to reconcile fully/again | restoring estranged parties into a single, unified peace | ”reconcile,” “reconciliation” | Christ reconciles both Jew and Gentile to God and to one another, in a single act, through the cross | ইনগবা ওইহনবা (ingba oihanba) — High. NEW TERM, built on the baseline ইনগবা (peace) root using the same “X ওইহনবা” pattern as justification/sanctification, for structural consistency. |
| access (by one Spirit) | προσαγωγή / prosagōgē | a bringing-near, an approach | the right of direct approach to God | ”access,” “we…have access” | Both Jew and Gentile believers now have equal, direct access to the Father through Christ, by the one Spirit | Handled together with boldness/confident access (3:12) below — Medium. |
| fellow citizens | συμπολῖται / sympolitai | co-citizens | shared civic/political-body membership | ”fellow citizens,” “members of the household” | Gentile believers now share full citizenship in God’s people, not a resident-alien or second-class status | তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক্কী মীওই (Tengban Mapugi leipakki miwoi) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on baseline kingdom_of_god’s লৈপাক (realm) root. |
| household of God | οἰκεῖοι τοῦ θεοῦ / oikeioi tou theou | members of the household | family-of-God membership, not merely civic citizenship | ”members of God’s household,” “household of God” | The warmer, familial complement to “fellow citizens” | তেংবাং মপুগী ইমুং (Tengban Mapugi imung) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on the baseline adoption doctrine’s ইমুং (household/family) root. This resonates strongly and positively with Meitei yumnak/clan household concepts and should be taught as a genuine bridge point — while clarifying that this household transcends any single biological clan or yumnak. |
| foundation of apostles and prophets | θεμέλιος τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν | foundation | the church’s foundation laid through the apostolic/prophetic Scripture-bearing ministry | ”foundation of the apostles and prophets” | Reuses apostle/prophet (Romans TM) | তবিদগী থাবিরকপা / তোঙান তোঙানবা ফোংদোকপা — Medium/Low (Romans TM — reused) |
| chief cornerstone | ἀκρογωνιαῖος / akrogōniaios | the topmost/outermost corner stone | the structurally decisive stone in ancient construction, on which the whole building’s alignment depends | ”chief cornerstone,” “cornerstone” | Christ himself as the structurally decisive foundation of the whole church-building | খ্বাইদগী মরুওইবা লু (khwaidagi maruoiba lu) — High. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from sacred stones or shrine-markers found at Umang Lai sacred groves in Sanamahi worship practice, and from consecrated foundation-stones at Vaishnava temple sites — Christ as cornerstone is a metaphor for his structural, foundational role in the church’s identity, not a physical sacred object at a worship site. |
| holy temple / dwelling place of God | ναὸς ἅγιος / κατοικητήριον τοῦ θεοῦ / naos hagios / katoikētērion tou theou | holy sanctuary / dwelling place | the church corporately described, metaphorically, as God’s own temple and dwelling | ”holy temple,” “dwelling place of God,” “temple in the Lord” | The church, not any physical building, is where God’s presence now dwells by the Spirit | তেংবাং মপুগী অসেংবা লৈফম (Tengban Mapugi asengba leifam) — High. NEW TERM, explicitly extending the baseline’s existing “church” forbidden-substitution logic: the baseline already forbids মন্দির (Vaishnava temple) as a rendering for ἐκκλησία (church); this same forbidding must extend to the metaphorical use of ναός (“temple”) here, since English “temple” could otherwise tempt a translator toward মন্দির. লৈফম (dwelling place) avoids this entirely. |
Chapter 3 (3:1-21)
Paul’s stewardship of the mystery, the church’s role in displaying God’s wisdom to the powers, and his prayer for the church’s strengthening in love.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mystery | μυστήριον | see Chapter 1 | see Chapter 1 | ”mystery” | Specifically here: that Gentiles are “fellow heirs…partakers of the promise in Christ” (3:6) | লুকখিবা থৌরাং — Critical (already flagged, first occurrence Ch.1 — reused) |
| stewardship | οἰκονομία / oikonomia | household management, administration | an entrusted task/responsibility | ”stewardship,” “administration,” “commission” | Paul’s God-given task of making the mystery known | থৌদাং তানবা (thoudang tanba) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on থৌদাং (task, from baseline calling/mission roots). |
| fellow heirs | συγκληρονόμος / synklēronomos | co-inheritor | sharing equally in an inheritance | ”fellow heirs,” “joint heirs” | Gentiles inherit fully alongside Jewish believers, with no lesser status | চাদান লোইননা লৌবা (chadan loinana louba) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on চাদান (inheritance, Ch.1) + লোইনবা (fellowship, Romans TM — reused). |
| boldness / confident access | παρρησία / parrēsia | freedom of speech, confident openness | unhindered, confident approach to God | ”boldness,” “confidence,” “access with freedom” | Believers may approach God directly and confidently through Christ, without ritual mediation | থাজনা চেংশিনবা (thajana chengshinba) — Medium. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from the ritual approach-protocols required before approaching an Umang Lai shrine (typically mediated by a maibi/maiba) or a Vaishnava temple deity (mediated by priestly ritual and purity observance) — believers draw near to God directly, without an intermediary religious specialist. |
| power at work within us | δύναμις ἡ ἐνεργουμένη ἐν ἡμῖν | see baseline power_of_god | see baseline | ”power at work within us” | God’s power, already active in believers, able to do “far more than we ask or think” (3:20) | তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| principalities and powers in heavenly places | see Chapter 1 | see Chapter 1 | see Chapter 1 | ”rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” | The church’s very existence displays God’s wisdom to the spiritual powers (3:10) | অসোইবা থাওয়াই পাংগলশিং / স্বর্গগী মফমশিং — Critical/Medium (reused) |
| fullness of God | πλήρωμα τοῦ θεοῦ | see Chapter 1 | see Chapter 1 | ”filled with all the fullness of God” | The prayer’s climax — believers filled to capacity with God’s own fullness | মপুং ফাবা — Medium (reused root) |
Chapter 4 (4:1-32)
The unity of the church (4:1-16), and the ethical “walk” of the new self versus the old self (4:17-32).
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| walk (worthy of the calling) | περιπατέω / peripateō | see 2:2/2:10 | see above | ”walk worthy,” “live worthy” | The ethical imperative flowing from the doctrinal indicative of chs. 1-3 | চৎনবা — Medium (reused root) |
| calling | κλῆσις / klēsis | see baseline | see baseline | ”the calling to which you have been called” | Believers’ vocation as God’s called people | কৌবগী থৌদাং — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| unity of the Spirit | ἑνότης τοῦ πνεύματος / henotēs tou pneumatos | oneness | the church’s Spirit-given, not humanly-manufactured, unity | ”unity of the Spirit” | The bond believers must actively “maintain,” not create | অমত্তা ওইবা (amatta oiba) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on the baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine-name root. |
| one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father | see individual terms | sevenfold “one” — a rhetorical/doctrinal unity-list | the theological basis for the church’s unity | ”one body…one God and Father of all” | The church’s unity rests on a shared, singular theological reality, not organizational uniformity | Reuses থাওয়াই অসেংবা, মপু ইবুংগো, থাজবা, তেংবাং মপু, ইপা (all Romans TM — reused); new term needed for body (see below) and baptism: বাপ্তিজম (Baptisma) — Medium, NEW TERM (transliterated loanword, consistent with regional Christian usage). |
| body (of Christ) | σῶμα / sōma | physical body | the church as Christ’s own body, a living organism with Christ as head and members as parts | ”body,” “body of Christ,” “one body” | The church’s organic, Spirit-unified, mutually-dependent life together — the book’s central ecclesiological image (also 1:23; 5:23, 30) | ক্রিস্তোগী হাকচাং (Christogi hakchang) — High. NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from the maibi’s body understood as a ritual vessel/medium for spirit-indwelling during Lai Haraoba trance possession, and from the Vaishnava temple murti understood as literally embodying Krishna’s presence (related to the avatar-theology collision already flagged Critical in the baseline incarnation entry). The church as Christ’s “body” is a relational/organic metaphor for the corporate community’s unity and function, not a claim that Christ’s presence is contained within or channeled through a particular ritual object or human medium. |
| grace given according to the measure of Christ’s gift | χάρις…κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ | grace, gift | the differing measure of grace-enabled gifting given to each believer | ”grace was given,” “according to the measure of the gift of Christ” | Sets up the list of church-building gifts that follows | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং / থাওয়াইগী খুদোল — Critical/Medium (Romans TM — reused) |
| apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers | ἀπόστολος, προφήτης, εὐαγγελιστής, ποιμήν, διδάσκαλος | see individual entries | offices/gifts Christ gives for building up the church | ”apostles…prophets…evangelists…pastors and teachers” | The specific gift-offices Christ gives for the church’s maturation | তবিদগী থাবিরকপা / তোঙান তোঙানবা ফোংদোকপা (Romans TM — reused); NEW: evangelist = নুংঙাইবগী পাউ সন্দোকপা মীওই (nungngaibagi pao sandokpa miwoi) — Low, built on gospel/mission roots; pastor/shepherd = য়াওশিংবু য়েংবা মীওই (yaoshingbu yengba miwoi) — Medium, built on য়াও (sheep, a genuine Meitei word), confirm naturalness with native speakers; teacher = তম্বিহনবা মীওই (tambihanba miwoi) — Low, built on তম্বি (learn/teach). |
| equip / for the work of ministry / building up | καταρτισμός / εἰς ἔργον διακονίας / εἰς οἰκοδομήν | to equip; toward the work of service; toward building | the goal-clauses of the gift-list — equipping the whole church for mutual ministry and growth | ”to equip,” “for works of service,” “for building up” | Gifts are given for the whole church’s growth, not for a religious-specialist class alone | মপুং ফাহন্নবা (equip) — Medium NEW TERM; হৌদোকহনবা (build up) — Low (baseline mutual_edification root — reused) |
| unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God / mature manhood / fullness of Christ | ἑνότης τῆς πίστεως…εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον…μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ | oneness of faith; a mature/complete man; the measure of the stature of Christ’s fullness | the goal of church-building ministry: corporate doctrinal unity and Christlike maturity | ”unity of the faith,” “mature manhood,” “the fullness of Christ” | The church’s growth-target is corporate Christlikeness, measured against Christ himself, not individual devotional attainment | থাজবা / তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা / মপুং ফাবা (Romans TM — reused / reused root) — Critical in combination given Son of God’s baseline risk tier. |
| put off the old self / put on the new self | ἀποθέσθαι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον / ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον | to put off/away the old man; to put on/clothe with the new man | clothing-metaphor for decisive moral transformation — the individual counterpart to the corporate “one new man” of 2:15 | ”put off the old self/man,” “put on the new self/man” | Ongoing sanctification pictured as a decisive change of “clothing” — moral identity, not mere behavior modification | মমাংগী মীওই (old self) / অনৌবা মীওই (new self) — High. NEW TERMS. A translator note is required distinguishing this individual anthropological sense from the corporate “one new man/humanity” of 2:15, which shares the word অনৌবা মীওই but names a different referent (a new humanity vs. a believer’s own renewed nature). Also confirm “put off / put on” verb choices (থাদোকপা / সেৎপা) with a native speaker before deployment — Medium on the verb pair specifically. |
| renewed in the spirit of your mind | ἀνανεοῦσθαι τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοῦς / ananeousthai tō pneumati tou nous | to be made new again | ongoing, Spirit-worked mental/spiritual renewal | ”renewed in the spirit of your mind” | Sanctification includes the transformation of thought-patterns, not only external behavior | অনৌবা ওইহনবা (anouba oihanba) — Medium. NEW TERM, built on the “X ওইহনবা” pattern already established (justification/sanctification), applied here to “renewal.” |
| grieve not the Holy Spirit / put away bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, malice / kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiving one another | λυπεῖτε τὸ Πνεῦμα…πικρία, θυμός, ὀργή, κραυγή, βλασφημία, κακία…χρηστοί, εὔσπλαγχνοι, χαριζόμενοι | see individual terms | practical ethical instructions flowing from the old-self/new-self teaching | ”grieve not,” “put away,” “be kind…forgiving” | The lived, daily shape of sanctification within the church community | থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Romans TM — reused); ময়ামদা কোকপা (forgiveness, reused from Ch.1) — High combined, given the Holy Spirit’s Critical baseline tier. |
Chapter 5 (5:1-33)
Walking in love, exposing sin and darkness, walking as children of light, and the household-code teaching on marriage as a picture of Christ and the church.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| walk in love | περιπατέω ἐν ἀγάπῃ | see above | the ethical-life “walk” metaphor applied specifically to love | ”walk in love” | Christ’s self-giving love (5:2) as the pattern for believers’ relationships | চৎনবা — Medium (reused root) |
| sacrificial offering | θυσία / προσφορά / thysia / prosphora | sacrifice / offering | cultic/sacrificial terminology applied to Christ’s self-giving death | ”offering and sacrifice” | Christ’s death described in sacrificial-cultic terms fulfilling and surpassing the Old Testament sacrificial system | তেংবাং মপুদা পীথোকপা (Tengban Mapuda pithokpa) — Medium. NEW TERM (descriptive, provisional). CONFIRM against the BSI Manipuri Bible’s established Old Testament sacrificial vocabulary before wide deployment, consistent with the baseline’s own hedging practice for covenant/fellowship. |
| sexual immorality / impurity / covetousness | πορνεία / ἀκαθαρσία / πλεονεξία / porneia / akatharsia / pleonexia | fornication / uncleanness / greed | vice-list naming specific excluded behaviors, here explicitly equated with idolatry (5:5) | “sexual immorality,” “impurity,” “covetousness” | Sins that exclude one from “inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God” (5:5) | ব্যভিচার (sexual immorality) — Medium, NEW TERM (established Bengali/Indic Christian loanword); শেংদবা (impurity) — High, NEW TERM — deliberately spelled/formed to avoid near-homophonic collision with অসেংবা (holy); use the negation pattern “-দবা,” never the “অ-” prefix, for this term. |
| idolatry | εἰδωλολατρία / eidōlolatria | image-worship, service to idols | worship directed toward an object/image rather than the true God; Paul explicitly equates covetousness with idolatry | ”idolatry,” “idol worship” | The vice-list’s climactic term, naming misdirected worship as such | মুর্তি খুরুম্বা (murti khurumba) — Critical. NEW TERM. This is among the most pastorally sensitive terms in the entire curriculum: it names, in ordinary Manipuri religious vocabulary, practices central to living Manipuri Vaishnava temple devotion (veneration of Krishna murtis) and, in a related but distinct way, to Sanamahi household and grove-shrine practice. Teach this term within Ephesians’ own argument (5:3-5, echoing Colossians 3:5’s logic that greed itself is a form of idolatry) rather than as direct polemic against specific neighbors’ or family members’ living devotional practice. Curriculum materials should equip pastors to teach this compassionately and pastorally, since both traditions remain the actual religious identity of most Meitei people, including many believers’ own families. |
| children of light / children of darkness | τέκνα φωτός / σκότος / tekna phōtos / skotos | children characterized by light / by darkness | moral-spiritual identity metaphor | ”children of light,” “once darkness, now light” | Believers’ identity-transformation described as a light/darkness reversal | ৱাংবগী মচাশিং (children of light) / অমাংবগী মচাশিং (children of darkness) — Medium. NEW TERMS. Light-touch note: distinguish this specifically moral/spiritual light-darkness contrast from traditional Meitei cosmological narratives found in the puya tradition concerning the primordial origins of light and darkness (e.g., accounts of the sun’s origins); Ephesians’ usage is ethical-relational, not cosmogonic. |
| filled with the Spirit | πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι / plērousthe en Pneumati | be filled | ongoing (present-tense) Spirit-filling, contrasted with drunkenness | ”be filled with the Spirit” | The Spirit-filled life expressed through worship, thanksgiving, and mutual submission | থাওয়াই অসেংবা — Critical (Romans TM — reused); মপুং ফাবা (fullness root) — Medium. |
| submitting to one another | ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις / hypotassomenoi allēlois | being subjected/ordered under one another | mutual, reciprocal submission as the frame for the household-code section that follows | ”submitting to one another” | The governing principle (5:21) for the wife/husband, child/parent, servant/master instructions that follow — submission in Ephesians begins as mutual, not unilateral | ইনবা (inba) — High. NEW TERM (reused root from baseline obedience_of_faith’s ইনবা). Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships. Must be taught as mutual submission (5:21) framing the whole section, and distinguished from unilateral clan-elder or patriarchal-household authority structures found in traditional Meitei yumnak organization, and from any residual royal-household hierarchical framing drawn from the historic Meitei court. |
| husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the church | ὁ ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικός ὡς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς κεφαλὴ τῆς ἐκκλησίας | head | headship as source/authority-in-love, modeled explicitly on Christ’s self-sacrificial headship over the church, not on domination | ”head of the wife,” “as Christ is head of the church” | The husband’s headship is defined and limited by Christ’s own self-giving, sacrificial pattern (5:25, “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”) | কোক (kok, head) — High. NEW TERM. This is the household-code section’s most theologically load-bearing and most pastorally sensitive term. It must be taught with its immediate qualifier (Christ’s self-sacrificial love, 5:25) always attached, never in isolation, to prevent a reading that authorizes unilateral domination. |
| Christ’s love for the church: sanctifying, washing, presenting without spot or wrinkle | ἁγιάσας…καθαρίσας…παραστήσῃ…ἄσπιλον | to sanctify; to cleanse; to present; without blemish | Christ’s redemptive, purifying, presentative love for the church, the pattern for the husband’s love | ”sanctify,” “cleanse,” “present her…without blemish” | Reuses sanctification vocabulary applied specifically to Christ’s relationship with the church | অসেংবা ওইহনবা — High (Romans TM — reused) |
| one flesh / this mystery | μία σάρξ / τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν | one flesh; this is a great mystery | marriage’s Genesis 2:24 pattern applied typologically to Christ and the church | ”one flesh,” “this mystery” | Marriage itself becomes a living picture of the Christ-church relationship — the chapter’s climactic application of “mystery” (μυστήριον) language | লুকখিবা থৌরাং — Critical (reused, first flagged Ch.1) |
Chapter 6 (6:1-24)
Household codes continued (children/parents, servants/masters), the armor of God, and Paul’s closing requests.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| obey your parents in the Lord / honor your father and mother | ὑπακούετε…ἐν Κυρίῳ / τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα | obey; to honor, value highly | children’s Spirit-motivated obedience, grounded explicitly in the fifth commandment “with promise" | "obey…in the Lord,” “honor your father and mother” | Household ethics grounded in Scripture’s own commandments, not in generic filial-piety custom alone | ইনবা (obey, reused above) / ইকাই খুমনবা (honor) — Low/Medium. NEW TERM for honor, built on a genuine Meitei respect-idiom. |
| fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath / bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord | μὴ παροργίζετε…ἐκτρέφετε ἐν παιδείᾳ καὶ νουθεσίᾳ Κυρίου | do not provoke to anger; nurture in discipline/instruction | reciprocal household-code balance — fathers are also directly addressed and constrained | ”do not provoke to anger,” “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” | Household authority in Ephesians is never one-directional; those with authority (fathers, and by extension masters below) are themselves under explicit, Scripture-grounded obligation | তম্বিহনবা অমসুং চেকশিনবা (tambihanba amasung chekshinba) — Medium. NEW TERM. |
| bondservants, obey your earthly masters…as slaves of Christ / masters, do the same to them | οἱ δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις…καὶ οἱ κύριοι, τὰ αὐτὰ ποιεῖτε πρὸς αὐτούς | slaves, obey masters; masters, do the same | reciprocal household-code instruction addressed to both the enslaved and the enslaving, within the first-century institution of slavery | ”bondservants…obey your masters,” “masters, do the same” | Both parties serve “the same Master…in heaven” who “shows no partiality” (6:9) — earthly household hierarchy is relativized under Christ’s own Lordship | মিনাই (slave/servant, minai — a genuine Meitei term) — Low/Medium; μপু (human “master,” rendered without the honorific ইবুংগো) — Medium/High. CRITICAL DISTINCTION: the plain মপু (master, human) must never carry the honorific ইবুংগো reserved exclusively for the divine Lord Jesus Christ (মপু ইবুংগো, baseline lordship_of_christ). This distinction preserves the baseline’s Critical Lordship-of-Christ boundary even where English “master/lord” (κύριος) is applied to a human slaveholder in this passage. |
| no partiality with God | οὔκ ἐστιν προσωπολημψία παρ’ αὐτῷ | no receiving of the face | God’s impartial judgment regardless of social/household status | ”no partiality,” “no favoritism” | Reinforces universal_human_accountability (Romans TM doctrine) applied to household-status distinctions | Reuses মীওই পুম্নমক্কী মপুংফাবা লান্থোকপা (universal_human_accountability doctrine root) — High |
| be strong in the Lord / put on the whole armor of God | ἐνδυναμοῦσθε ἐν Κυρίῳ / ἐνδύσασθε τὴν πανοπλίαν τοῦ θεοῦ | be empowered; put on the full armor | drawing on Christ’s own strength; a complete, Roman-soldier-imagery set of spiritual equipment | ”be strong in the Lord,” “put on the whole armor of God” | Spiritual warfare is fought in Christ’s strength, using God-given equipment, against a specifically spiritual (not human) enemy | তেংবাং মপুগী লান্থাং (Tengban Mapugi lanthang) — High. NEW TERM, built on genuine Meitei war-vocabulary roots (লান = battle/war, থাং = sword). Must be distinguished from Manipur’s indigenous Thang-Ta martial-art tradition, whose swords and spears carry their own ritual and cosmological significance tied to Sanamahi practice (Thang-Ta weapons are traditionally consecrated and associated with Pakhangba/serpent-deity symbolism). “Armor of God” language must be taught as a Pauline metaphor for spiritual equipment (truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the Spirit’s word — 6:14-17), not as an endorsement or echo of ritual martial-arts weaponry. |
| not against flesh and blood, but against…spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places | οὐ πρὸς αἷμα καὶ σάρκα, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὰς ἀρχάς, πρὸς τὰς ἐξουσίας…πρὸς τὰ πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις | not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities…against the spiritual [forces] of wickedness | the true nature of the church’s conflict — non-human, spiritual, hostile powers, not human opponents | ”spiritual forces of evil,” “principalities and powers,” “rulers of the darkness of this world” | The book’s most explicit and climactic spiritual-warfare statement, drawing together every principalities/powers reference from chs. 1-3 | অসোইবা থাওয়াই পাংগলশিং (asoiba thawai panggalshing) — Critical. This is the single highest-stakes translation decision in the entire book for the Manipuri context. Must be taught as naming specifically hostile, evil spiritual powers opposed to God and his people — categorically distinct from Umang Lai (generally regarded by Sanamahi practitioners as benevolent guardian deities honored, not warred against, through Lai Haraoba) and categorically distinct from শক্তি (the ritual/oracular power attributed to a maibi in trance, already forbidden by the baseline as a rendering for God’s own power). Ephesians 6:12 is not calling believers into conflict with Manipur’s traditional guardian-spirit cosmology as such, but naming a specific New Testament category of hostile spiritual beings opposed to God; this distinction requires careful, explicit pastoral framing to avoid either syncretistic conflation or needless communal offense. |

All six chapters of Ephesians have been reviewed: Chapter 1 (salutation, election/predestination/adoption/redemption, mystery, prayer for wisdom); Chapter 2 (core passage 2:1-10, plus 2:11-22 on the dividing wall, one new humanity, and the church as God’s temple); Chapter 3 (Paul’s stewardship of the mystery, prayer for strengthening); Chapter 4 (church unity, gift-offices, old self/new self); Chapter 5 (walking in love and light, idolatry, household codes for marriage); Chapter 6 (household codes for children/parents and servants/masters, the armor of God, closing benediction). No chapter of Ephesians introduces zero new theological vocabulary; every chapter is represented above with its own load-bearing terms.
