Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Peter (Koine Greek → Manipuri)
Scope and Method
This analysis covers 2 Peter in its entirety — all 3 chapters, first verse to last — per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate. The core passage (2 Peter 1:16-21) receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter (the remainder of ch. 1, plus chs. 2 and 3) receives a chapter-level study of every load-bearing term, using the same fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Manipuri) rendering risk.
Where a term already has an established rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, that rendering is reused exactly and marked “(baseline reuse).” New terms introduced by 2 Peter are marked “(new)” and given a proposed rendering, risk tier, and grounded reason, consistent with the baseline’s Bengali-script, dual-tradition-aware (Sanamahi + Gaudiya Vaishnava) methodology.
2 Peter’s seven curriculum doctrines are noted inline where relevant: Reliability/Inspiration of Scripture; Growing in Christian Virtue; False Teachers and Their Judgment; Certainty of Christ’s Return; Day of the Lord and Final Judgment; Patience of God’s Timing; Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)
2 Peter 1:16
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| myth | μῦθος / mythos | a story, tale, fable | invented narrative; contrasted with historical fact; used pejoratively of speculative religious tales | ”myth,” “fable,” “cleverly devised story” | Peter denies the apostolic proclamation is an invented tale — it rests on eyewitness history. | (new) “মৈথই ৱারি” (maithei wari, “invented/fabricated tale”) — Medium. Must be clearly distinguished from the sacred narrative genre of Meitei oral tradition (e.g., Khunung Eshei, creation lore) without implying those traditions are the specific referent; keep generic (“a made-up story”), not culturally targeted. |
| cleverly devised | σεσοφισμένοις / sesophismenois | having been made wise/clever; skillfully contrived | crafted with rhetorical skill, often deceptively | ”cleverly devised,” “skillfully invented” | Modifies “myths” — human ingenuity, not divine revelation, is the source of false religion. | Descriptive phrase, no fixed glossary term needed — Low. |
| power | δύναμις / dynamis | might, capability, power | inherent capability; miracle-working power; divine power specifically | ”power,” “might” | Christ’s power displayed proleptically at the Transfiguration, guaranteeing the reality of his future parousia. | (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা (Tengban Mapugi pangthok-thengnaba) — High. Baseline explicitly forbids শক্তি (associated with maibi trance-power); retained here for Christ’s power specifically. |
| coming | παρουσία / parousia | arrival, presence, coming | a ruler’s official arrival/visit; in NT, Christ’s future bodily return | ”coming,” “advent,” “presence,” “second coming” | The certain, future, bodily return of Christ in glory and judgment — the anchor doctrine of ch. 3. | (new) “ক্রিস্তোগী হন্না লাকপা” (Christogi hanna lakpa, “Christ’s coming again”) — Critical. Manipuri Vaishnavism holds a live doctrine of a still-awaited future divine appearance — the Kalki avatar, the tenth and final avatar of Vishnu, expected at the close of the Kali Yuga. Christ’s parousia must be taught as a unique, unrepeatable, personal return of the same incarnate Son who already came once — not as one more expected item in an open avatar sequence, nor as inaugurating a new cosmic age-cycle. This distinction must be made explicit, not assumed. |
| eyewitnesses | ἐπόπται / epoptai | those who have seen with their own eyes; overseers/observers (used of initiates in mystery-cult contexts in secular Greek) | firsthand witness; also a technical term for one admitted to view sacred mysteries | ”eyewitnesses,” “we ourselves saw” | Peter grounds apostolic testimony in verified, personal, historical observation of the Transfiguration, not private revelation or vision alone. | (new) “মিত্তা উবা মীওই” (mitta uba miwoi, “one who saw with [own] eyes”) — High. Must not be rendered with any term suggesting privileged mystical initiation (paralleling a maibi’s or maiba’s exclusive ritual “seeing”); this is ordinary, historically verifiable sight available in principle to any witness. |
| majesty | μεγαλειότης / megaleiotēs | greatness, grandeur, majestic splendor | divine or royal grandeur; used of God’s greatness and (secularly) of the goddess Artemis’s splendor (Acts 19:27) | “majesty,” “grandeur,” “greatness” | The visible splendor of Christ’s divine glory manifest at the Transfiguration. | (new) “চাউরাবা মতিক চাউবা” (chauraba matik chauba, “great/majestic glory”) — built on (baseline reuse root) মতিক চাউবা (glory) — High. |
2 Peter 1:17
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| honor | τιμή / timē | value, price, worth, honor | esteem shown; worth ascribed | ”honor,” “esteem” | Honor conferred by the Father on the Son at the Transfiguration. | (new) “ইকাই খুম্নবা” (ikai khumnaba, “honor/reverence shown”) — Low-Medium. |
| glory | δόξα / doxa | brightness, splendor, honor, glory | God’s visible radiant presence; honor/reputation | ”glory,” “splendor” | God’s own radiant honor, displayed in and conferred on the Son. | (baseline reuse) মতিক চাউবা (matik chauba) — High, per baseline caution against conflation with Ras Lila’s staged visual splendor evoking Krishna’s radiance. |
| God the Father | Θεὸς Πατήρ / Theos Patēr | God [the] Father | God in his fatherly relation, here specifically to the Son | ”God the Father” | Distinguishes the first Person of the Trinity as speaker/source of the heavenly voice. | (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপু + ইপা (Tengban Mapu + Ipa) — Critical, combined per baseline entries. |
| Majestic Glory | ἡ μεγαλοπρεπὴς δόξα / hē megaloprepēs doxa | the fittingly-great glory; the glory befitting greatness | a reverential circumlocution for God himself, avoiding direct divine naming (Second-Temple Jewish idiom) | “the Majestic Glory,” “the Excellent Glory” | A reverent title standing in for God the Father as the source of the heavenly voice. | (new) “চাউরাবা মতিক চাউবা” (chauraba matik chauba) — same compound as megaleiotēs above, used here as a divine title — High. Translator note required: this is a title for God, not merely a description of an attribute; must be capitalized/treated as a proper reference to God in study notes. |
| beloved | ἀγαπητός / agapētos | dearly loved, beloved | object of settled, chosen love (not mere affection) | “beloved,” “dearly loved” | The Father’s unique, eternal love for the Son, echoing Christ’s baptismal declaration. | (new) “নুংশিবা” (nungshiba, “beloved/dear one”) — Medium. Must be distinguished from Ras Lila’s prema (the romantic-devotional love of Radha and Krishna, a central and celebrated theological category in Manipuri Vaishnavism); the Father’s love for the Son is filial and eternal, not romantic-devotional. |
| well pleased | εὐδοκέω / eudokeō | to think well of, be well pleased, take delight in | approval, delight, favorable disposition | ”well pleased,” “delighted in” | The Father’s settled approval and delight in the Son — grounds the Son’s unique authority. | (new) “পুক্নিং হৌবা” (pukning houba, “heart is pleased/glad”) — Medium. |
| Son | Υἱός / Huios | son | biological son; in NT Christology, the eternal, unique divine Son | ”Son,” “his Son” | Directly identifies Jesus as the eternal Son of God, confirmed by the Father’s own voice. | (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (Tengban Mapugi machanupa) — Critical, per baseline’s Sonship-of-Christ caution against avatar-sequence framing. |
2 Peter 1:18
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| voice | φωνή / phōnē | voice, sound | audible speech; divine speech from heaven | ”voice,” “sound” | God’s own audible, historical self-disclosure, heard by named human witnesses. | (new) “খোংগন” or “হ্লান” — simplest: “খোঙ” not attested; use plain “ৱাহৈ” (wahei, “voice/word spoken”) — Low. |
| heaven | οὐρανός / ouranos | sky, heaven | the visible sky; God’s dwelling place | ”heaven,” “the sky” | Source of the divine voice — God speaking from his own transcendent dwelling. | (new) “স্বর্গ” (swarga) — Medium. NOTE: স্বর্গ is a Sanskrit-derived loanword with strong currency in Hindu cosmology (Vaishnava heaven, Indra’s heaven, etc.) as one realm among several within a cyclical cosmology (cf. Naraka, Vaikuntha, Goloka). It is nonetheless the standard term across regional Bible translation tradition and should be retained, but curriculum notes should clarify that biblical “heaven” is God’s own unique transcendent abode, not one tier within a Hindu cosmological hierarchy or a realm reached through accumulated bhakti merit. |
| holy mountain | τὸ ἅγιον ὄρος / to hagion oros | the holy mountain | a mountain set apart by a manifestation of God’s presence (echoes Sinai, Zion) | “holy mountain,” “the sacred mountain” | The Mount of Transfiguration, set apart by Christ’s revealed glory. | (baseline reuse root) অসেংবা (asengba, “holy”) + লাংমাই/চিং — proposed: “অসেংবা চিং” (asengba ching, “holy mountain”) — Medium. Must be distinguished from any Umang Lai sacred grove or hill shrine site honored in Lai Haraoba observance; this mountain’s holiness derives from a unique historical revelation of Christ’s glory, not from being a permanently indwelt sacred site. |
2 Peter 1:19
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| more sure/confirmed | βεβαιότερον / bebaioteron | more firm, more confirmed, more sure | comparative of “firm/reliable”; legal/contractual overtone of a guaranteed claim | ”more fully confirmed,” “made more sure” | The Transfiguration eyewitness testimony confirms the reliability of the prophetic (OT) word — key claim for the Reliability/Inspiration of Scripture doctrine. | (new) “চেৎনা লৈরবা” (chetna leiraba, “firmly established/certain”) — High, doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture. Given the historical memory of the 1729 Puya Meithaba burning of indigenous Meitei sacred manuscripts (puya), this claim of Scripture’s confirmed reliability should be taught with particular pastoral sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory of lost/destroyed sacred texts (per baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine note), while affirming that God has providentially preserved his own Word intact. |
| prophetic word | ὁ προφητικὸς λόγος / ho prophētikos logos | the prophetic word/message | the body of OT prophetic Scripture | ”prophetic word,” “message of the prophets,” “prophecy” | The Old Testament prophetic witness to Christ, now corroborated by apostolic eyewitness. | (baseline reuse root) ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল (prophecy) + লোন (word) — proposed: “ফোংদোকপা ৱারোলগী লোন” (phongdokpa warolgi lon) — High. |
| lamp | λύχνος / lychnos | lamp, light | a household oil lamp; metaphor for guiding revelation | ”lamp,” “light” | Scripture’s guiding, illuminating function until Christ’s return brings full light. | (new) “মৈরা” (maira, “lamp”) — Low. |
| dark place | αὐχμηρὸς τόπος / auchmēros topos | a squalid/murky place | dry, dim, gloomy location | ”dark place,” “murky place” | The present age’s moral/spiritual darkness, in which prophetic Scripture provides guiding light. | (new) “অমাংবা মফম” (amangba mafam, “dark place”) — Low-Medium. NOTE: same phrase root proposed for “Tartarus” in ch. 2 (a place of darkness/custody for judgment) — ensure context makes clear these are two distinct referents (a general moral condition here; a specific holding-place for fallen angels in 2:4). |
| morning star / day star | φωσφόρος / phōsphoros | light-bearer, morning star, Venus as morning star | literal astronomical referent (the planet Venus at dawn); figurative for the dawning of full revelation/hope | ”morning star,” “day star” | The full dawning of Christ’s revealed glory in believers’ hearts, anticipating his return. | (new) “নুমিদাংগী থবি” (numidanggi thabi, “morning star”) — Medium. Should not be linked to any Vaishnava astral/planetary deity association (Venus/Shukra has an established identity within Hindu astrology, jyotiṣa, as a planetary deity); keep the referent strictly Christ-centered and metaphorical (dawning hope), with a translator note if astrological resonance risks confusion. |
2 Peter 1:20
Greek: τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες, ὅτι πᾶσα προφητεία γραφῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως οὐ γίνεται.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| prophecy | προφητεία / prophēteia | prophecy, prophetic utterance | God-inspired declaration of his purposes | ”prophecy” | Every instance of OT prophetic Scripture, without exception. | (baseline reuse) ফোংদোকপা ৱারোল (phongdokpa warol) — Low, per baseline. |
| Scripture | γραφή / graphē | writing, document; “the Scripture(s)“ | the sacred, authoritative written texts recognized as God’s own word | ”Scripture,” “the Scriptures,” “written word” | The written, authoritative deposit of God’s revelation — foundational to the Reliability/Inspiration of Scripture doctrine and directly relevant to 3:16, where Peter extends this category to Paul’s letters. | (new) “অসেংবা মপুং ৱারি” (asengba mapung wari, “Holy Scripture/Writing”) — Critical, doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture. Built directly on baseline’s existing inspiration_of_scripture doctrine-name compound (“অসেংবা মপুং ৱারিগী থাওয়াই পীবা” = “the [Holy Scripture]‘s being given breath/Spirit”), so this term must be adopted as the standing noun for “Scripture” itself across this curriculum. Given the Puya Meithaba history, teach that this Scripture’s authority rests on God’s own inspiration and providential preservation, not on royal or institutional sanction (contrasting with the 1729 royal act that destroyed indigenous sacred manuscripts). |
| one’s own interpretation | ἰδία ἐπίλυσις / idia epilysis | one’s own release/解決/interpretation | the act of a prophet originating his own message; or (less likely here) a reader’s private interpretation | ”someone’s own interpretation,” “the prophet’s own initiative,” “private explanation” | Denies that OT prophecy originated from a human prophet’s own mind/agenda — it originated with God (explained further in v. 21). | (new) “মথান্তা খন্নবা” (mathanta khannaba, “interpreting/deciding on one’s own”) — High, doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture. Must be rendered so as to affirm Scripture’s divine origin, not merely warn against faulty reader interpretation (a common mistranslation pitfall); translator note required to clarify which sense is intended in context. |
2 Peter 1:21
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| will of man | θέλημα ἀνθρώπου / thelēma anthrōpou | the will/desire of a human being | human intention/initiative, as opposed to divine initiative | ”the will of man,” “human will” | Rules out merely human origination for prophecy. | (new) “মীওইগী য়াদবা” (miwoigi yadaba) or “মীওইগী পুক্নিং” (human intention) — Medium. |
| carried along | φερόμενοι / pheromenoi | being borne/carried along | to be moved, carried, or driven by an external force (used elsewhere of a ship driven by wind, Acts 27:15, 17) | “carried along,” “moved,” “borne along,” “impelled” | The Holy Spirit’s superintending, active movement of the human authors of Scripture — the central verb for the doctrine of divine inspiration. | (new) “থাওয়াই অসেংবনা পুরকপা” (Thawai Asengbana purakpa, “carried/borne along by the Holy Spirit”) — Critical, doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture. HIGH-SALIENCE COLLISION: this image of a person being “carried/borne along” by a spirit closely parallels a maibi priestess’s ritual possession/trance-seizure by an Umang Lai deity during Lai Haraoba (cf. baseline’s caution under holy_spirit and called). This MUST be explicitly distinguished in curriculum teaching: biblical inspiration preserved the human authors’ faculties, personalities, and vocabulary intact while the Spirit superintended their writing toward God’s intended message — it is not ecstatic possession, loss of consciousness, or oracular trance-utterance. This distinction is doctrinally load-bearing for the entire Reliability/Inspiration of Scripture unit and should be flagged for mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence. |
| spoke from God | ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ / elalēsan apo Theou | they spoke from God | human speech with God as its ultimate source | ”spoke from God,” “spoke as they were from God” | The human prophets’ words are, in origin, God’s own words. | Descriptive phrase using (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপু (God) — High. |
| Holy Spirit | Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον / Pneuma Hagion | Holy Spirit | the third Person of the Trinity, the personal divine Spirit | ”Holy Spirit” | Personal divine agent of inspiration — must never be read as an impersonal force or a populated nature/ancestral-spirit category. | (baseline reuse) থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Thawai Asengba) — Critical, per baseline’s explicit prohibition of bare থাওয়াই alone. |
PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY
Chapter 1 (vv. 1-15; vv. 16-21 already treated above in Part A)
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| servant/slave | δοῦλος / doulos | slave, bondservant | one owned by and fully obligated to a master; also a term of honored self-designation for God’s servants | ”servant,” “slave,” “bond-servant” | Peter’s self-identification (1:1) — total, willing belonging to Christ. | (new) “লান্মী” (lanmi, “servant/slave”) — Medium. Must be distinguished from the historic Meitei lallup corvée labor-service obligation owed to the king, and from a guru’s dependent disciple (chela) in Vaishnava guru-lineages; biblical “slave of Christ” is a willing, honored identity, not a coerced labor obligation or subordinate discipleship rank. |
| apostle | ἀπόστολος / apostolos | one sent | authorized, commissioned messenger | ”apostle” | Peter’s commissioned authority to write this letter. | (baseline reuse) তবিদগী থাবিরকপা — Medium. |
| faith of equal standing | ἰσότιμος πίστις / isotimos pistis | equally-valued faith | faith held in common, of the same precious worth, across all believers | ”a faith as precious as ours,” “equally precious faith” | All believers, regardless of background (Jew/Gentile-equivalent unity theme), share the identical, full-value gift of faith. | Built on (baseline reuse) থাজবা (faith) + descriptive “মমান লোয়ননবা” (equal in value) — High, ties to baseline’s faith doctrine caution distinguishing থাজবা from Vaishnava ভক্তি (bhakti). |
| righteousness | δικαιοσύνη / dikaiosynē | righteousness | right standing; here, God’s own righteous character as the ground of faith’s gift | ”righteousness” | God’s own righteousness (not human merit) is the basis on which precious faith is granted to believers. | (baseline reuse) অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক — Critical. |
| God and Savior | Θεὸς καὶ σωτήρ / Theos kai sōtēr | God and savior | a single-referent divine title (grammatically identifying Jesus as both God and Savior) | “our God and Savior Jesus Christ” | Explicit affirmation of the full deity of Christ, paired with his saving role — one of the strongest deity-of-Christ statements in the NT. | (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপু (God) + (new) সেভিয়র/Savior term below — Critical, doctrine: Deity of Christ (per baseline registry). |
| Savior | σωτήρ / sōtēr | savior, deliverer, rescuer | one who rescues from danger, death, or ruin; a royal/imperial honorific in the Greco-Roman world; a major recurring 2 Peter title (1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2, 3:18) | “Savior,” “deliverer” | Christ as the exclusive rescuer from sin and final judgment, and the one who grants entrance into the eternal kingdom. | (new) “অহানবা পীবা মপু” (Ahanba piba Mapu, “the Lord who gives salvation/rescue”) — Critical. NEW TERM NOT YET IN BASELINE — must be added to translation memory. GROUNDED REASON: Manipuri Vaishnavism has a live, well-developed devotional category of Krishna/Vishnu as ultimate refuge and deliverer of the devoted soul (cf. Bhagavad Gita 18:66’s promise of deliverance from sin, and the devotee’s hope of rescue realized through bhakti and Ras Lila devotion). “Savior” must therefore be taught, at every occurrence, as Christ’s unique, historical, once-for-all rescue accomplished through his death and resurrection (reusing (baseline reuse) অহানবা/salvation and সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা/resurrection), not a devotional-refuge relationship cultivated through ongoing bhakti practice. |
| grace | χάρις / charis | grace | unmerited favor | ”grace” | God’s unmerited gift, multiplied to believers “in the knowledge of God” (1:2). | (baseline reuse) মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং — Critical. |
| peace | εἰρήνη / eirēnē | peace | relational, covenantal wholeness | ”peace” | Wished for believers as flowing from grace and true knowledge of God. | (baseline reuse) ইনগবা — Medium. |
| knowledge (full/precise) | ἐπίγνωσις / epignōsis | full, precise, or personal knowledge (intensive of γνῶσις) | experiential, relational, saving knowledge of a person; a keyword of 2 Peter (1:2, 1:3, 1:8, 2:20, 2:21) | “knowledge,” “true knowledge,” “full knowledge” | Personal, saving knowledge of God/Christ, through which grace and peace are multiplied and divine power is granted — one of the letter’s central theological terms. | (new) “মপুং ফাবা খংবা” (mapung phaba khangba, “complete/fulfilled knowing”) — High, doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue / Divine Nature. GROUNDED REASON: Manipuri Vaishnavism includes jñāna (knowledge) as one of the three classical margas (paths) toward liberation (moksha) alongside bhakti and karma — knowledge-as-path-to-liberation is a live, structured devotional category, not a distant abstraction. 2 Peter’s ἐπίγνωσις must be taught as relational, saving knowledge OF a specific person (God/Christ) that produces moral transformation and is received by grace, not a speculative or meditative knowledge-path that itself effects liberation/moksha (already forbidden per baseline salvation entry). |
| knowledge (general) | γνῶσις / gnōsis | knowledge | ordinary or general knowledge; in 1:5-6, a virtue to be added to faith | ”knowledge” | One link in the virtue chain of 1:5-7 — active, growing understanding built on faith. | (new) “খংবা” (khangba, “knowing/knowledge”) — Medium, same collision caution as ἐπίγνωσις above but lower intensity since this occurrence lacks the salvific-knowledge weight. |
| divine power | θεία δύναμις / theia dynamis | divine/godly power | God’s own supernatural capability, as distinct from generic capability | ”his divine power,” “God’s power” | The source of every provision believers need for life and godliness — grounds the doctrine of Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption. | Built on (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপুগী পাংথোক-থেংনবা — High. |
| life and godliness | ζωὴ καὶ εὐσέβεια / zōē kai eusebeia | life and piety/godliness | ζωή: existence, especially spiritual/eternal life; εὐσέβεια: reverent, godly conduct | ”life and godliness,” “life and piety” | Everything necessary for both spiritual life and godly living has already been graciously granted through the knowledge of Christ. | εὐσέβεια = (new) “তেংবাং মপুবু ইকাই খুম্নবা” (Tengban Mapubu ikai khumnaba, “reverencing God/godliness”) — Medium-High, doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue. Must be distinguished from bhakti (devotional love-service to Krishna, expressed through Ras Lila) and from ritual reverence customarily shown to the Umang Lai at a sacred grove; biblical godliness is reverent, obedient character flowing from the knowledge of Christ, not devotional performance or ritual observance. |
| promises | ἐπαγγέλματα / epaggelmata | promises | formal pledges made and guaranteed | ”promises,” “precious promises” | God’s own guaranteed pledges, through which believers become partakers of the divine nature. | (new) “ৱাশাক” (washak, “promise/vow”) — Medium, consistent with baseline’s messianic_promise doctrine root “ৱাশাক্না পীবা.” |
| divine nature | θεία φύσις / theia physis | divine nature | God’s own essential character/being | ”divine nature,” “God’s nature” | Believers become “partakers of the divine nature” (1:4) — sharing, by the Spirit’s transforming work, in God’s moral character (holiness, incorruptibility), while remaining ontologically distinct creatures. | (new) “তেংবাং মপুগী মহৈ” (Tengban Mapugi mahai, “God’s nature/essence”) — CRITICAL — highest-priority new term in this book, doctrine: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption. GROUNDED REASON: this phrase is uniquely vulnerable to conflation with THREE separate live theological categories in the Manipuri religious landscape: (1) Advaita/bhakti sāyujya — the aspiration of some Vaishnava devotional schools toward ultimate merging/oneness with Krishna’s divine being; (2) the Sanamahi tradition’s kinship-based divinity, in which Sanamahi is understood as literal “elder brother” of the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba, i.e., divinity conceived through blood/lineage kinship; (3) avatar theology’s repeated divine embodiment. 2 Peter 1:4 must be taught explicitly as moral/relational participation in God’s holy character through the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work (paired with (baseline reuse) অসেংবা ওইহনবা, sanctification) — NOT ontological deification, NOT absorption/merging into ultimate reality, and NOT a kinship-based claim to shared divine nature. This term requires mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence. |
| partaking/partakers | κοινωνοί / koinōnoi | partners, sharers, partakers | one who shares jointly in something with another | ”partakers,” “partners,” “sharers” | The relationship believers have to the divine nature — a genuine but creaturely sharing, not identity/absorption. | Built on (baseline reuse root) লোইনবা (fellowship) — proposed “লোয়ননবা” (loinanaba, “sharing/partaking”) — Critical, tied directly to θεία φύσις above. |
| corruption | φθορά / phthora | decay, ruin, corruption, destruction | moral/physical ruin; decay leading to destruction | ”corruption,” “decay,” “destruction” | The moral ruin caused by evil desire, from which believers escape through the divine promises (1:4); also the false teachers’ ultimate destiny (2:12, 2:19). | (new) “মংহনবা” (manghanba, “ruin/corruption/decay”) — High, doctrine: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption. Must be distinguished from neutral cyclical decay-and-rebirth within a Hindu cosmological framework (things naturally decaying within an ongoing cosmic cycle, samsara); φθορά in 2 Peter is a moral-relational category of corruption from which Christ rescues believers permanently, not a phase of an impersonal recurring cycle. |
| lust/desire | ἐπιθυμία / epithymia | strong desire, craving, lust | in this context, morally disordered desire | ”lust,” “corrupt desire,” “evil desire” | The corrupting agent at work “in the world” from which believers escape. | (new) “পাম্নবা” (pamnaba, “craving/desire”) — Medium. |
| diligence/effort | σπουδή / spoudē | haste, zeal, diligence, earnestness | eager effort applied toward a goal | ”make every effort,” “with all diligence,” “add to your faith” | The believer’s active response to grace — energetic pursuit of the virtue chain, without implying works-based merit. | (new) “হোৎনবা” (hotnaba, “striving/making effort”) — Medium, doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue. Must be framed as a Spirit-enabled response to grace already given (1:3-4), not effort that earns divine favor (echoing baseline’s grace-versus-bhakti-service caution). |
| virtue/moral excellence | ἀρετή / aretē | excellence, virtue, moral goodness | moral excellence of character; also used in Greek ethics of any excellence (courage, skill) | “virtue,” “moral excellence,” “goodness” | The second link in the virtue chain (1:5) — active moral excellence built on faith. Core term for the Growing in Christian Virtue doctrine. | (new) “অফবা চৎনবিরাক” (aphaba chatnabirak, “good/excellent conduct-standing”) — Medium-High, built on the same morphological pattern as (baseline reuse) অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness). Must be distinguished from Vaishnava celebration of Krishna’s guṇas (virtuous/glorious qualities extolled in bhakti devotional song) and from Sanamahi communal ethical norms upheld through Lai Haraoba observance; this virtue is the fruit of the Spirit’s work in a believer’s life, not devotional praise-attributes or ritual community norms. |
| self-control | ἐγκράτεια / egkrateia | self-mastery, self-control | mastery over one’s own desires/impulses | ”self-control,” “temperance” | Third link in the virtue chain — restraint over disordered desire, directly countering the false teachers’ unrestrained epithymia in ch. 2. | (new) “মথন্তা ইনবা” (mathanta inaba, “controlling oneself”) — Low-Medium. |
| steadfastness/endurance | ὑπομονή / hypomonē | remaining under, endurance | patient endurance under trial or pressure | ”steadfastness,” “perseverance,” “endurance” | Fourth link — sustained endurance in the faith. | (new) “ঙাইজরবা” (ngaijaraba, “enduring/waiting steadfastly”) — Low-Medium. Kept distinct from μακροθυμία (patience toward others/God’s forbearance, ch. 3) though related in root sense. |
| brotherly affection | φιλαδελφία / philadelphia | love of brothers/siblings | familial love among believers | ”brotherly kindness,” “brotherly affection,” “love for fellow believers” | Sixth link in the virtue chain — love within the believing community. | (new) “ইচিন-ইনাওগী নুংশিবা” (ichin-inaogi nungshiba, “sibling love”) — Low. |
| love | ἀγάπη / agapē | love | self-giving, chosen, covenantal love (as opposed to erotic/romantic love) | “love” | The culmination of the virtue chain (1:7) — the crowning Christian virtue. | (new) “নুংশিবা” (nungshiba, “love”) — Medium, doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue. Must be distinguished from Ras Lila’s central devotional theme, prema-bhakti (the romantic-devotional love of Radha and Krishna); ἀγάπη here is self-giving, ethical, covenantal love toward God and fellow believers, not romantic-devotional passion. |
| election/calling | ἐκλογή / κλῆσις / eklogē / klēsis | choosing / calling | God’s sovereign choice and summons | ”election,” “calling” | Believers are urged to “confirm” (make certain) their calling and election through diligent godly living (1:10). | (baseline reuse) তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (election) / কৌবগী থৌদাং (calling) — High. |
| eternal kingdom | αἰώνιος βασιλεία / aiōnios basileia | eternal kingdom | God’s/Christ’s everlasting reign | ”eternal kingdom” | The final, everlasting reign into which believers are richly welcomed (1:11) — pairs σωτήρ with final glorification. | (baseline reuse root) তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক (kingdom of God) + “লোমননবা” (eternal) — Medium. |
| tent/tabernacle (body) | σκήνωμα / skēnōma | tent, dwelling, tabernacle | the physical body as a temporary dwelling | ”tent,” “body,” “earthly dwelling” | Peter’s approaching death, described as “putting off” the body — a metaphor requiring care given resurrection hope, not rebirth. | (new) “মহাক্কী হাক্চাং” (mahakki hakchang, “his body [as tent]”) — Medium. Should be paired with a reminder that laying aside the body anticipates bodily resurrection (baseline reuse) সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা, not rebirth into a new earthly existence (পুনর্জন্ম, forbidden per baseline). |
| departure | ἔξοδος / exodos | going out, departure | death, described with an Exodus-echoing term | ”departure,” “decease” | Peter’s death framed as a deliverance-journey, echoing the Exodus. | (new) “থোকখিবা” (thokkhiba, “going out/departure”) — Low. |
Chapter 2 — False Teachers and Their Judgment
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| false prophets | ψευδοπροφῆται / pseudoprophētai | false prophets | those who wrongly claim prophetic authority | ”false prophets” | Historical precedent (OT false prophets) for the false teachers now arising. | (new) “মীমাংনবা তোঙান তোঙানবা ফোংদোকপা” (mimangnaba tongan tonganba phongdokpa, “false [one who declares/prophet]”), built on (baseline reuse) তোঙান তোঙানবা ফোংদোকপা — High, doctrine: False Teachers and Their Judgment. |
| false teachers | ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι / pseudodidaskaloi | false teachers | those who teach false doctrine within the church | ”false teachers” | The central antagonists of the letter’s second half. | (new) “মীমাংনবা তক্লিবা মীওই” (mimangnaba takliba miwoi, “false teaching person”) — Critical, doctrine: False Teachers and Their Judgment. Curriculum should note that these are teachers arising from within the believing community (2:1), not merely outside religious rivals — a point requiring pastoral care given Manipur’s currently live, multi-tradition religious landscape, so that this teaching is not misapplied as blanket polemic against Sanamahi or Vaishnava neighbors but is understood as an internal-church warning. |
| destructive heresies | αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας / haireseis apōleias | destructive sects/opinions/factions | a chosen doctrinal path leading to ruin | ”destructive heresies,” “destructive opinions” | The false teachers’ doctrines lead ultimately to ruin, both their own and their followers’. | Built on (new) ারোল (teaching) + apōleia (destruction, below) — High. |
| bought/redeemed | ἀγοράσαντα / agorasanta | having bought/purchased | commercial purchase; theologically, Christ’s atoning purchase of believers | ”bought,” “redeemed” | The false teachers deny the very Master who purchased them at the price of his own death — a direct atonement reference. | (new) “লৌখিবা” (loukhiba, “bought/purchased”) — High, atonement language; flag for theologian review per baseline escalation rule for atonement/propitiation content. |
| Master | δεσπότης / despotēs | master, owner, absolute sovereign | one with unqualified ownership-authority over a slave/servant, distinct from κύριος’s broader “lord" | "Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Owner” | Christ’s absolute ownership-authority over those he purchased, distinct from but complementary to (baseline reuse) মপু ইবুংগো (Lord). | (new) “চোকপা মপু” (chokpa Mapu, “owning Master”) — Medium, distinguish from feudal lallup-style lord-subject obligation and from a Vaishnava guru’s authority over a disciple; Christ’s mastery flows from having purchased believers through his own death, not political subjection or guru-lineage hierarchy. |
| destruction/perdition | ἀπώλεια / apōleia | destruction, ruin, loss, perdition | final ruin; eternal loss/perishing | ”destruction,” “perdition,” “ruin,” “swift destruction” | The certain final judgment awaiting false teachers — central to the Day of the Lord and Final Judgment doctrine. | (new) “মংহনবা” — reuse phthora root, or better distinct: “লান্থোকপা” (lanthokpa, “being cast out/destroyed”) — Critical, doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment. Must be distinguished from karmic loss/dissolution within a Hindu cosmological framework; biblical apōleia is a personal God’s final forensic verdict of ruin upon the unrepentant, not automatic karmic consequence. |
| judgment | κρίμα / κρίσις / krima / krisis | judgment, verdict | a legal verdict; divine judicial sentence | ”judgment,” “condemnation” | God’s certain judicial verdict against the false teachers and, more broadly, all evildoers (cf. 2:3-9). | (new) “ৱাযেন্বা” (wayenba, “judgment/verdict”) — High, doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment. GROUNDED REASON: Manipuri Vaishnavism carries a live doctrine of karma — impersonal, automatic moral consequence accruing across lifetimes. Biblical judgment (κρίσις) must be taught as a personal God’s specific, forensic verdict rendered at an appointed day, not an impersonal karmic mechanism working itself out gradually or across rebirths. |
| angels who sinned | ἄγγελοι ἁμαρτήσαντες / angeloi hamartēsantes | angels having sinned | fallen angelic beings | ”the angels who sinned” | Historical precedent for certain judgment, drawn from Jewish apocalyptic tradition (cf. Genesis 6, 1 Enoch background). | (new) “পাপ তৌবা স্বর্গদূত” (pap touba swargadut, “angel who sinned”) — Medium. |
| Tartarus / pits of gloom | ταρταρώσας / tartarōsas | cast into Tartarus (a unique NT term, the only occurrence, drawn from Greek mythological vocabulary for the abyss/prison of divine beings) | a place of confinement/punishment for divine/semi-divine beings, in the mythological source sense; adapted by Peter (via “chains of gloom,” σειραῖς ζόφου) as a holding-place of judgment for fallen angels | ”cast into hell,” “cast into Tartarus,” “consigned to chains of gloom/nether darkness” | Fallen angels are held in a specific place of confinement, awaiting final judgment — not annihilated, not free, not yet finally sentenced. | (new) “অমাংবা মফমদা থমখিবা” (amangba mafamda thamkhiba, “kept/held in a place of darkness”) — Critical. GROUNDED REASON: this term must NOT be equated with the Hindu Naraka (a live, structured system of multiple hell-realms for temporary post-death punishment prior to further rebirth) nor with any Sanamahi concept of an ancestral/spirit-world punishment realm. 2 Peter’s holding-place is a temporary custody awaiting a specific, final, once-for-all judgment — not a station within a cycle of rebirth or an ancestral-spirit geography. Do NOT import the proper name “Tartarus” itself (a Greek mythological place-name) into Manipuri; use the descriptive custody-for-judgment phrase instead. Mandatory theologian review. |
| flood | κατακλυσμός / kataklysmos | flood, deluge | the Genesis flood specifically | ”flood,” “deluge” | Historical precedent: God judged “the ancient world” but preserved Noah — pattern of judgment-with-preservation. | (new) “ইশিং চৎলবা” (ishing chatlaba, “the flood [water that went/came]”) — Low. |
| Noah / preacher of righteousness | Νῶε / δικαιοσύνης κήρυκα / Nōe / dikaiosynēs kēryka | Noah / herald of righteousness | proper name / one who publicly proclaims righteousness | ”Noah,” “a preacher of righteousness” | Noah as a righteous exception preserved through judgment, and (per 2 Peter’s broader tradition) a proclaimer calling others to righteousness. | Name transliterated “নোহ” (Noh); “preacher” reuses (baseline reuse root) ফোংদোকপা + righteousness root — Low-Medium. |
| Sodom and Gomorrah | Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα / Sodoma kai Gomorra | proper names | historical cities destroyed for wickedness | ”Sodom and Gomorrah” | A second historical precedent of certain, fiery judgment. | Transliterated proper names — Low. |
| Lot | Λώτ / Lōt | proper name | Noah’s righteous counterpart in this account | ”Lot” | Another righteous exception preserved through judgment. | Transliterated proper name — Low. |
| way of truth / way of righteousness | ἡ ὁδὸς τῆς ἀληθείας / τῆς δικαιοσύνης / hē hodos tēs alētheias / dikaiosynēs | the way/path of truth / of righteousness | a whole manner of life characterized by truth/righteousness | ”the way of truth,” “the way of righteousness” | The gospel way of life, which false teachers cause outsiders to blaspheme (2:2) or which some abandon after once knowing it (2:21). | Built on (baseline reuse) অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক (righteousness) + লম্বি (path): “অচুমগী লম্বি” — Medium. |
| sensuality | ἀσελγεία / aselgeia | licentiousness, debauchery, unrestrained sensual indulgence | shameless, exploitative sexual/moral license | ”sensuality,” “debauchery,” “licentiousness” | The moral corruption practiced and promoted by the false teachers (2:2, 2:7, 2:18), by which they exploit the vulnerable. | (new) “নীংথিজবা চৎনবিরাক” (ningthijaba chatnabirak, “shameless/unrestrained conduct”) — Medium-High. NOTE: curriculum teaching should take care that this critique of exploitative moral license is not read as a broad critique of the Ras Lila devotional dance tradition itself (whose central theme is the sacred, allegorical romantic love of Radha-Krishna and which holds UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition); 2 Peter targets moral exploitation and licentious deception by false teachers, not devotional art or symbolic theology as such. This distinction should be made explicitly to avoid unintended offense. |
| greed | πλεονεξία / pleonexia | greed, covetousness | insatiable desire for gain, especially material | ”greed,” “covetousness” | The false teachers’ financial motive (2:3, 2:14). | (new) “পাম্নবা” (pamnaba, “craving/greed”) — Low-Medium. |
| Balaam | Βαλαάμ / Balaam | proper name | OT prophet-for-hire, rebuked by a speaking donkey | ”Balaam” | A third historical precedent — a prophet corrupted by greed, restrained by God’s intervention. | Transliterated proper name — Low. |
| waterless springs / mists | πηγαὶ ἄνυδροι / ὁμίχλαι / pēgai anydroi / homichlai | waterless springs / mists (driven by storm) | metaphor for something that promises but fails to deliver | ”waterless springs,” “mists driven by a storm” | Vivid metaphor for the false teachers’ empty promises. | (new) “ইশিং লৈতবা ইথক” (ishing leitaba ithak, “waterless spring”) — Low. |
| freedom/liberty | ἐλευθερία / eleutheria | freedom, liberty | release from bondage/obligation | ”freedom,” “liberty” | The false teachers falsely promise freedom while themselves enslaved to corruption (2:19) — an ironic reversal. | (new) “স্বাধীনতা” (swadhinata, common regional loanword for freedom/liberty) — Medium. Must be distinguished from true freedom in Christ (already touched by baseline in Romans 6, 8 themes); false teachers’ “freedom” is a counterfeit license leading to renewed slavery to phthora (corruption). |
| slaves of corruption | δοῦλοι φθορᾶς / douloi phthoras | slaves of corruption/ruin | ironic reversal: promisers of freedom are themselves enslaved | ”slaves of corruption” | The self-condemning irony of the false teachers’ actual spiritual condition. | Built on (new) লান্মী (slave) + মংহনবা (corruption) — High. |
| dog / sow proverbs | κύων … ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον ἐξέραμα / ὗς … εἰς κύλισμα βορβόρου / kyōn … exerama / hys … kylisma borborou | a dog [returning] to its own vomit / a sow to wallowing in mire | proverbial imagery (drawn from Proverbs 26:11 and extra-biblical tradition) for reversion to former corrupt behavior | ”a dog returns to its vomit,” “a sow to her wallowing in the mire” | Vivid warning against apostates returning to their former corruption after having known “the way of righteousness.” | Rendered literally as proverbial imagery — Low. Dogs and pigs already carry culturally resonant connotations of uncleanness/base behavior in the regional cultural context, which supports rather than undermines the intended force of the metaphor; no substitution needed. |
Chapter 3 — The Day of the Lord, Patience, and New Creation
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Manipuri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| scoffers | ἐμπαῖκται / empaiktai | mockers, scoffers | those who deride/ridicule, especially concerning God’s promises | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | Those who will arise in the last days denying the certainty of Christ’s return, doubting on the basis of unbroken natural continuity (“all things continue as they were,” 3:4). | (new) “কাউথোকপা মীওই” (kaouthokpa miwoi, “mocking person”) — Medium-High, doctrine: Certainty of Christ’s Return. |
| coming (again) | παρουσία / parousia | coming, arrival | (see core passage 1:16 entry above; same term, same rendering) | “coming,” “second coming” | The specific object of the scoffers’ doubt (3:4) and the letter’s climactic assurance (3:10, 3:12). | (reuse from Part A) ক্রিস্তোগী হন্না লাকপা — Critical. |
| Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα Κυρίου / hēmera Kyriou | day of the Lord | the appointed future day of God’s decisive judgment and consummation | ”the Day of the Lord,” “the day of God” | The certain, sudden, all-encompassing final day of judgment and renewal — core term of the Day of the Lord and Final Judgment doctrine. | (new) “মপু ইবুংগোগী নুমিত” (Mapu Ibungogi numit, “the Lord’s Day/the Day of the Lord”), built on (baseline reuse) মপু ইবুংগো — Critical, doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment. Must be distinguished from the cyclical Hindu/Vaishnava cosmological framework of recurring Yuga-ages ending in pralaya (periodic cosmic dissolution) followed by renewed creation; the Day of the Lord is a single, final, unrepeatable, personally-decreed day of judgment and re-creation, not one turn of an endless cosmic wheel. |
| thief | κλέπτης / kleptēs | thief | one who comes unannounced, by stealth | ”thief,” “as a thief” | Metaphor for the utterly unpredictable timing of the Day of the Lord’s arrival. | (new) “হুরানবা” (huranaba, “thief”) — Low. |
| elements | στοιχεῖα / stoicheia | basic components, elements, elementary substances | fundamental physical/cosmic constituents; in some NT usage, also elementary religious/spiritual principles (not the sense here) | “the elements,” “the heavenly bodies,” “the elemental substances” | The basic constituent elements of the created order, to be dissolved/burned up at the Day of the Lord, making way for the new heavens and new earth. | (new) “স্বর্গ লৈবাক্কী মখল” (swarga leibakki makhal, “elements of heaven and earth”) — High, doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment. Manipuri Vaishnava Hindu cosmology includes the Pañca Mahābhūta (five great elements: earth, water, fire, air, ether) as a structured, live cosmological category, and Hindu cosmology broadly includes pralaya (periodic cosmic dissolution and recreation). 2 Peter’s dissolving of the “elements” must be taught as a single, final, historical event inaugurating a permanent new creation — not a phase within an endless cosmic dissolution-recreation cycle. |
| burned up / dissolved | καυσούμενα / λυθήσεται / kausoumena / lythēsetai | being burned / will be dissolved | destruction by fire; loosening/dissolution | ”will be burned up,” “will be dissolved” | The manner of the old creation’s judgment — by fire, decisively, once. | (new) “মিত্না কাংহনবা” (mitna kanghanaba, “burned by fire”) — Medium. |
| holy conduct and godliness | ἅγιαι ἀναστροφαί καὶ εὐσέβειαι / hagiai anastrophai kai eusebeiai | holy ways of life and godly acts | practical, visible holy living | ”holy and godly lives,” “conduct and godliness” | The Day of the Lord’s certainty should produce present holy, godly living. | Built on (baseline reuse) অসেংবা (holy) + (new) ইকাই খুম্নবা (godliness, ch. 1 entry) — High. |
| new heavens and new earth | καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινήν / kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn | new heavens and new earth | the final, permanent, renewed creation, in which righteousness dwells | ”new heavens and a new earth” | The believer’s ultimate hope, promised and certain — a permanent, final consummation. | (new) “অনৌবা স্বর্গ অমসুং অনৌবা লৈবাক” (anouba swarga amasung anouba leibak, “new heaven and new earth”) — Critical, doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment / Certainty of Christ’s Return. Must be distinguished from the Hindu cyclical cosmology’s repeated re-creation after pralaya (an endless cycle of ages: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali Yuga, repeating without final terminus); the biblical new heavens and new earth are a single, final, non-repeating consummation in which righteousness permanently dwells. |
| righteousness dwells | δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖ / dikaiosynē katoikei | righteousness dwells/inhabits | righteousness as the permanent characteristic of the new creation | ”in which righteousness dwells” | The moral character of the eternal new creation. | Built on (baseline reuse) অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক — High. |
| patience/longsuffering | μακροθυμία / μακροθυμεῖ / makrothymia / makrothymei | long-temperedness, patience, forbearance | willingness to delay deserved judgment/response for a purposeful reason | ”patient,” “longsuffering,” “not wanting any to perish” | God’s purposeful delay of the Day of the Lord specifically so that more may repent (3:9, 3:15) — core term for the Patience of God’s Timing doctrine. | (new) “খুদোংচাবা” (khudongchaba, “patience/forbearance”) — High, doctrine: Patience of God’s Timing. GROUNDED REASON: must be distinguished from the impersonal unfolding of cosmic time-cycles in Hindu Yuga theology (in which vast ages simply elapse mechanically regardless of human repentance); God’s patience in 2 Peter 3:9 is the personal, purposive forbearance of a relational God specifically delaying judgment to grant opportunity for repentance — not an impersonal cosmic clock. |
| delay/slow | βραδύνει / bradynei | is slow, delays | apparent tardiness | ”is not slow,” “does not delay” | Denies that God’s patience is negligence or unfaithfulness to his promise. | (new) “লেম্বা” (lemba, “being slow/delayed”) — Low-Medium. |
| perish | ἀπόλλυμι / apollymi | to perish, be destroyed | (related to ἀπώλεια above) final ruin | ”perish” | God’s patience aims at repentance, “not wishing that any should perish” (3:9) — universal scope of God’s patient desire. | Built on (new) apōleia root — High. Retain universal (“any/all”) scope without qualification, per baseline’s universality-preservation rule. |
| ungodly | ἀσεβής / asebēs | irreverent, godless | one who fails to reverence God; opposite of εὐσέβεια | ”ungodly,” “the ungodly” | The destiny awaiting the ungodly at the Day of Judgment (2:5, 2:6, 3:7). | (new) “তেংবাং মপুবু ইকাই খুম্দবা মীওই” (Tengban Mapubu ikai khumdaba miwoi, “one who does not reverence God”) — Medium-High, opposite of εὐσέβεια above. |
| hastening | σπεύδοντας / speudontas | hastening, eagerly awaiting | eager anticipation, possibly also “hastening” the day’s arrival through godly living | ”waiting for and hastening,” “earnestly desiring” | Believers’ active, eager posture toward the Day of the Lord’s coming. | Built on (new) হোৎনবা root — Medium. |
| Scripture (extended to Paul’s letters) | γραφαί / graphai | writings, Scriptures | Peter’s explicit classing of Paul’s letters alongside “the other Scriptures" | "the Scriptures,” “the other Scriptures” | Direct canon-consciousness — apostolic writings recognized, within the NT itself, as Scripture alongside the OT. Central to the Reliability/Inspiration of Scripture doctrine. | (reuse from Part A) অসেংবা মপুং ৱারি — Critical, doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture. |
| hard to understand | δυσνόητα / dysnoēta | difficult to understand | genuinely challenging content, honestly acknowledged | ”hard to understand,” “difficult to understand” | Peter honestly acknowledges some of Paul’s teaching is difficult — a model of honest engagement with Scripture’s genuine difficulty. | (new) “খংবা ৱাবা” (khangba waba, “difficult to know/understand”) — Low-Medium. |
| twist/distort | στρεβλοῦσιν / strebrousin | twist, wrench, distort | deliberate misrepresentation | ”twist,” “distort” | The untaught and unstable distort Scripture (including Paul’s letters) to their own destruction — a direct warning tied to the False Teachers doctrine. | (new) “মথান্তা লেল্লি” or clearer: “ৱালেপ্পা” (walleppa, “twisting/distorting [words]”) — High, doctrine: False Teachers and Their Judgment / Reliability of Scripture. |
| unstable | ἀστήρικτοι / astēriktoi | unfixed, unstable | lacking firm doctrinal grounding | ”unstable,” “untaught and unstable” | Those vulnerable to being led astray by distorted teaching. | (new) “চেৎনা লৈতবা” (chetna leitaba, “not firmly established”) — Low-Medium. |
| firmness/steadfastness | στηριγμός / stērigmos | firm standing, stability | secure doctrinal grounding | ”firmness,” “stability,” “steadfastness” | The goal of sound teaching — believers grounded and unmoved. | (new) “চেৎনা লৈবা” (chetna leiba, “being firmly established”) — Low. |
| error | πλάνη / planē | wandering, error, deception | being led astray from truth | ”error,” “the error of lawless people” | The danger of being carried away by false teaching, contrasted with steadfastness. | (new) “খুদিংমক তুরবা” or simply “অশোয়বা” (ashoiba, “error/deviation”) — Medium. |
| grow (in grace and knowledge) | αὐξάνω / auxanō | to grow, increase | organic, ongoing increase | ”grow,” “increase” | The letter’s closing exhortation — ongoing growth in grace and in the knowledge (ἐπίγνωσις/γνῶσις) of Christ, bookending the virtue-chain theme of ch. 1. | (new) “হৌদোকপা” (houdokpa, “growing/increasing”) — Medium, doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue; pairs with (reuse) grace and knowledge terms above. |
| forever / day of eternity | εἰς ἡμέραν αἰῶνος / eis hēmeran aiōnos | to the day of eternity | a doxological formula affirming Christ’s unending glory | ”forever,” “to the day of eternity” | Closing doxology ascribing eternal glory to Christ — affirms his eternal, not temporary or cyclical, divine glory. | Built on (baseline reuse) মতিক চাউবা (glory) + “লোমননবা” (eternal) — High, reinforcing Christ’s eternal (non-avatar-cyclical) glory. |
