07 Semantic Analysis — Gospel of John (Koine Greek) → Manipuri
Methodology
This analysis follows the baseline Romans Language Package conventions exactly. Where a term already exists in translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the recorded Manipuri rendering is reused without alteration, and only John-specific contextual notes are added. Where John introduces genuinely new theological vocabulary, a provisional rendering is proposed following the baseline’s own descriptive-compound method (e.g. building on তেংবাং মপু, থাওয়াই, অসেংবা, অচুম্বা, ৱা- roots). Provisional renderings are marked [PROVISIONAL — confirm with Manipuri theologian/native speaker before Phase 2 deployment], matching the honesty standard the baseline itself applied to terms like covenant, fellowship, and imputed_righteousness.
The dual-tradition comparative-religion landscape documented in the baseline (Sanamahism — Sanamahi, Pakhangba, the Umang Lai, Lai Haraoba, maibi/maiba ritual specialists; and Gaudiya Vaishnavism — Krishna-Radha bhakti, avatāra theology, the Ras Lila) is treated throughout as two live, currently practiced systems, not a superseded animism followed by a dominant Hinduism.
John’s Gospel raises one comparative-religion risk that Romans did not surface with the same intensity: John’s own vocabulary of the Son “descending from heaven” and being “lifted up” sits unusually close to the literal meaning of Sanskrit avatāra (“descent”) and to the positive veneration of the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba in Sanamahi cosmology. These are flagged as Critical wherever they occur.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: John 3:1-21 (Verse-by-Verse)
John 3:1
“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.”
| Term | Greek (translit.) | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering (translit.) | Risk |
|---|
| Pharisees | Φαρισαῖος (Pharisaios) | “separated one” | A Jewish religious-legal party emphasizing Torah observance | Pharisee(s) | Nicodemus’s religious credentials frame his need for something Torah-observance cannot supply | ফরীশী (Farishi) — transliteration | Medium — risk of unconsciously mapping onto a local priestly/ritual-specialist class (Vaishnava Brahmin, Sanamahi maiba); flag as a distinct historical Jewish party, not an analog of a Meitei religious office |
| ruler (of the Jews) | ἄρχων (archōn) | “one who rules/leads” | Council member, civic-religious authority (Sanhedrin) | ruler, leader, official | Establishes Nicodemus’s social standing before his admission of spiritual ignorance | লু-শাংবা (lu-shangba), “leader” | Low |
John 3:2
“…came to Jesus by night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.’”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| Rabbi | ῥαββί (rhabbi) | “my great one/teacher” | Honorific address to a Jewish teacher | Rabbi, Teacher, Master | Nicodemus’s respectful but inadequate category for Jesus | রব্বি (Rabbi) — transliteration | Low |
| teacher | διδάσκαλος (didaskalos) | “one who teaches” | Instructor, rabbi | teacher, master | Correct but insufficient category — Jesus is more than a teacher | ওজা (oja) | Low |
| signs | σημεῖον (sēmeion) | “sign, mark, token” | A miraculous act that points beyond itself to divine identity/authority | sign(s), miracle(s), wonders | John’s distinctive category (7 major signs structure the book) for self-authenticating divine works, not mere wonder-display | খুদম (khudam) [PROVISIONAL] | Medium — must be distinguished from a maiba/maibi’s omen-reading or divinatory signs sought at Lai Haraoba; a Johannine “sign” authenticates Christ’s identity, it is not a portent to be independently interpreted |
John 3:3
“Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| Truly, truly | ἀμὴν ἀμήν (amēn amēn) | “verily, verily” | Solemn asseveration formula unique in this doubled form to John | Truly truly, verily verily, I tell you the truth | Marks an authoritative, non-negotiable pronouncement | আমেন, আমেন (Amen, Amen) — transliteration, per system-prompt convention | Low |
| born again / born anew | γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν (gennēthē anōthen) | “be generated/begotten from above / again” | ἄνωθεν carries a deliberate double sense: “again” AND “from above” | born again, born anew, born from above | THE central term of the passage: a Spirit-wrought regeneration, not a repeatable/cyclical event | অনৌবা পোকপা (anouba pokpa), “new birth” [PROVISIONAL — must be confirmed against পুনর্জন্ম exclusion] | CRITICAL — must never be rendered with or drift toward পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation), the forbidden term already fixed in the baseline. The ἄνωθεν double-meaning (again/from above) is largely lost in Manipuri and requires an explicit translator’s note; Nicodemus’s own confusion (v.4) dramatizes exactly this ambiguity in the source text |
| kingdom of God | βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (basileia tou theou) | “the reign/kingdom of God” | God’s saving rule | kingdom of God | Entry into God’s saving reign is conditioned on the new birth | তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক (Tengban Mapugi leipak) — baseline reuse, exact | Medium (baseline-inherited) |
John 3:4
“Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?’”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| born (again), literal sense | γεννηθῆναι (gennēthēnai) | “to be born/begotten” | Physical birth | be born | Nicodemus misreads Jesus’ spiritual/heavenly ἄνωθεν as a literal repeated physical birth | পোকপা (pokpa), “to be born” (ordinary, non-theological) | CRITICAL by contrast — this verse is the interpretive hinge showing why অনৌবা পোকপা must never be allowed to collapse into ordinary repeated physical birth or, worse, cyclical rebirth |
John 3:5
“Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| water | ὕδωρ (hydōr) | “water” | Physical water; also symbolic of cleansing/baptism/the Spirit’s outpouring (cf. Ezek 36:25-27) | water | Likely a compressed reference to baptismal repentance and/or Spirit-cleansing, tightly paired with Spirit | ঈশিং (ising) | Low — must not be read as a ritual purification act sufficient in itself (parallel risk to Lai Haraoba/Vaishnava ritual-purity water rites; regeneration is Spirit-caused, water is sign not cause) |
| Spirit | πνεῦμα (pneuma) | “spirit, breath, wind” | The Holy Spirit (personal, divine) as agent of new birth | Spirit, Holy Spirit | The efficient cause of the new birth | থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Thawai Asengba) — baseline reuse, exact, must always appear in full | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
John 3:6
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| flesh | σάρξ (sarx) | “flesh, physical body” | Human nature in its fallen, merely-natural capacity, contrasted with Spirit | flesh, human nature, physical body | Natural human birth produces only natural human life; it cannot of itself produce spiritual life | হাক্চাং (hakchang) | Medium — distinguish from মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (incarnation), which describes the Son’s unique assumption of সাক্স for redemptive purpose; here সাক্স names ordinary fallen human capacity, the opposite pole |
John 3:7-8
“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| wind / Spirit (wordplay) | πνεῦμα (pneuma), πνεῖ (pnei, “blows”) | Single Greek word covers both “wind” and “spirit” | Wind (natural phenomenon) and Spirit (divine Person) — deliberate pun | wind, breath, Spirit | The Spirit’s sovereign, invisible, uncontrollable work is likened to wind — mysterious in origin and destination but undeniable in effect | নুংশিৎ (nungsit, “wind”) for the literal image; থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Thawai Asengba) retained for “Spirit” | High — the Greek pun is largely lost, since Manipuri uses two distinct words (নুংশিৎ for wind, থাওয়াই for spirit/breath/soul); a translator’s note is required to preserve the analogy’s force; do not attempt to force one native word to cover both, since থাওয়াই alone (without অসেংবা) risks activating the populated Sanamahi spirit-world sense already flagged in the baseline |
John 3:9-10
“Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?’”
No new theological terms; reuses teacher (ওজা) and Israel (ইস্রায়েল — baseline reuse, exact).
John 3:11
“Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| bear witness / testimony | μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία (martyreō / martyria) | “to testify; testimony” | Eyewitness/authoritative attestation; a major structural device across all of John (John the Baptist, the Father, Scripture, works, the Spirit, the disciples all “testify”) | witness, testify, testimony | Firsthand, authoritative attestation to divine revelation, rejected by unbelief | সাক্ষী পীবা (sakkhi piba) | Medium/High — must be distinguished from a maibi’s oracular utterance/testimony given while in Lai Haraoba trance, which is understood locally as a channeled message from an Umang Lai deity; Johannine testimony is sober, verifiable, historical eyewitness attestation, not trance-mediated revelation |
John 3:12
“If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| believe | πιστεύω (pisteuō) | “to trust, believe, put faith in” | Verb form of πίστις; personal trust with a specified object | believe, trust, put faith in | The verb correlate of থাজবা (faith); the object must be named — here, Jesus’ own words | থাজবা (thajaba), used verbally | High (baseline reuse) — object of belief must be tracked; John uses this verb roughly 98 times, more than any other NT book, and it is the book’s central invitation-verb |
| heavenly things | τὰ ἐπουράνια (ta epourania) | “the heavenly [things]“ | Realities belonging to heaven, God’s own realm | heavenly things | Sets up the pre-existence claim of v.13 | স্বর্গগী ৱাফম (sorgogi wapham), “heavenly matters” | High — see “heaven” entry below |
John 3:13
“No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| heaven | οὐρανός (ouranos) | “sky, heaven” | God’s own dwelling/realm, distinct from the created earthly order | heaven, the heavens | The Son’s unique origin and destination | স্বর্গ (sorgo) [PROVISIONAL, loanword] | High/Critical — স্বর্গ is a pan-Indic loanword also naming the Puranic/Vedic heavenly realm (a temporary reward-realm within a rebirth cosmology) and resonating with the Vaishnava devotee’s aspiration toward Vaikuntha/Goloka (Krishna’s eternal abode). Biblical “heaven” as God’s own eternal dwelling, entered permanently through Christ, must be explicitly distinguished from both |
| descended / ascended | καταβαίνω / ἀναβαίνω (katabainō / anabainō) | “to go down / to go up” | Movement between heaven and earth | descend, come down; ascend, go up | States the Son’s pre-existence and heavenly origin — he did not merely appear on earth, he came from heaven | স্বর্গদগী কুম্থরকপা (descend from heaven) / স্বর্গদা কাখৎপা (ascend to heaven) [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — this is the single sharpest doctrinal collision risk in John for a Manipuri Vaishnava audience: Sanskrit avatāra literally means “descent,” and Krishna’s periodic “coming down” from Vaikuntha is the very grammar of avatāra theology celebrated in the Ras Lila. John’s “descended from heaven” language must be taught explicitly as a single, unique, permanent descent of the eternal Son (cf. baseline incarnation entry, মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা), never as one instance of a repeatable avatāra pattern |
| Son of Man | ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου (ho huios tou anthrōpou) | “the son of the man/of humanity” | A messianic-apocalyptic self-designation (Daniel 7:13-14), paradoxically pairing full humanity with divine authority | Son of Man | Jesus’ preferred self-title in John, holding humanity and heavenly authority together | মীওইগী মচানুপা (miwoigi machanupa) | High — built in deliberate structural parallel to the baseline’s তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (Son of God); the paradox (human descent-designation + divine authority) must be preserved, not flattened into either “just a man” or “an avatar” |
John 3:14
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| serpent | ὄφις (ophis) | “serpent, snake” | Reference to Numbers 21:4-9, the bronze serpent raised for healing from judgment | serpent, snake | A typological image: looking to the raised serpent brought physical healing from a curse; looking to the crucified Son brings eternal healing from sin | লিং (ling) | CRITICAL — this is a major, distinctive risk unique to Manipuri: Pakhangba, the ancestral serpent-deity of Sanamahi cosmology (elder-brother relationship to Sanamahi himself, per baseline notes), is an object of positive ancestral-divine veneration and a marker of the historic Meitei royal lineage. The Numbers 21 bronze serpent is the opposite image — a symbol of judgment remedied only by looking to what God provided, not a deity to be venerated in itself. This typology requires explicit Old Testament background teaching to prevent the serpent image itself being read as honorific in the Pakhangba sense |
| lifted up | ὑψωθῆναι (hypsōthēnai) | “to be raised high, lifted up, exalted” | Double meaning: (1) physically raised up on a cross; (2) exalted/glorified — a hallmark Johannine irony where crucifixion IS exaltation | lifted up, raised up, exalted | The cross itself is the moment of the Son’s glorification, not merely his execution | থাংজিনবা (thangjinba) | High — must preserve the double sense (physical raising + exaltation/glory); also distinguish from the ceremonial raising/processional display of a deity’s image or effigy in Vaishnava or Sanamahi festival practice, which “lifted up” could otherwise evoke |
John 3:15
“…that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) | “unending/age-lasting life” | Not merely unending duration but a qualitatively new, God-given life beginning now and continuing forever | eternal life, everlasting life | The goal of believing — a present possession, not only a future hope (cf. John 17:3) | অতৈ লৈতবা হিংবা (atai leitaba hingba), “life that has no end” [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — the single most frequent positive-outcome term in John (17 occurrences); must never be conflated with মোক্ষ (Vaishnava liberation, already forbidden in baseline) or with a devotee’s hoped-for eternal nearness to/union with Krishna in Vaikuntha/Goloka; eternal life in John is knowing the true God through the Son (17:3), a relational reality, not an absorptive or liberative one |
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
The thesis verse of the passage — every load-bearing term converges here.
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| loved | ἠγάπησεν (ēgapēsen, from ἀγαπάω agapaō) | “loved” | Self-giving, sacrificial, unconditioned love; distinct from ἔρως (romantic/desiring love) and from φιλέω (affectionate friendship-love, though the two overlap at points) | loved | God’s own initiating, costly love toward a rebellious world | নুংশিবা (nungsiba) | CRITICAL — Manipuri Vaishnavism’s most celebrated devotional expression, the UNESCO-recognized Ras Lila, portrays Krishna-Radha love (prema) as intensely romantic and mystical, and is a matter of prestigious, currently performed cultural-religious identity, not a distant classical reference. John 3:16’s ἀγάπη — God’s self-giving love for the world, initiated from God toward the unworthy, culminating in sacrificial death — must be taught explicitly against a Radha-Krishna romantic/devotional love framework, not assumed to transfer automatically through a single shared word for “love” |
| world | κόσμος (kosmos) | “world, ordered universe, humanity, the world-system” | Ranges from the created order (positive, as here) to the fallen world-system opposed to God (e.g. 15:18-19) — context-dependent | world, world of humanity | Here, humanity in its fallen totality, the object of God’s love despite its rebellion (contrast 3:19-21 and later “the world” as hostile) | মালেম (malem) | High — মালেম, if it functions in Meitei cosmology (Sanamahi and Puranic-influenced) as a specific tiered “middle-earth” plane (as against heavenly and underworld realms), risks narrowing κόσμος to a cosmological location rather than “humanity in its fallen totality” as John intends; each occurrence must be checked for which of John’s two senses (loved-object vs. hostile-system) is active |
| only Son / only-begotten | τὸν υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ (ton huion ton monogenē) | “the only-born/only-of-its-kind son” | Uniqueness of kind, not merely birth order — “one-of-a-kind Son” | only Son, only begotten Son, one and only Son | Christ’s unique, exclusive divine Sonship — no other being shares this status | অমা খক্তা ওইবা মচানুপা (ama khakta oiba machanupa), used together with the baseline’s তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা (Son of God) | CRITICAL — must communicate exclusivity as sharply as possible against Manipuri Vaishnavism’s well-developed avatāra sequence, in which Krishna is one figure among several recognized descents of Vishnu; μονογενής rules out any “one among several” reading |
| gave | ἔδωκεν (edōken, from δίδωμι didōmi) | “gave” | A costly, voluntary gift | gave, sent, offered up | God’s own initiative and cost, paralleling the baseline’s grace vocabulary (মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং, “favor given without needing to be earned”) | পীবা (piba), “to give” | High — connect explicitly to the grace entry; this is grace enacted at the cost of the Son |
| perish | ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi) | “to be destroyed, lost, ruined” | Eternal ruin/destruction, the negative counterpart to eternal life | perish, be destroyed, be lost | The alternative to eternal life for the unbeliever — real, final loss | মানখিবা (mankhiba) | Medium — must retain full weight of final loss, not softened to mere disappointment or temporary setback |
John 3:17
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| sent | ἀπέστειλεν (apesteilen, from ἀποστέλλω apostellō) | “sent” | Commissioned, dispatched with authority and purpose | sent | The Father-Son “sending” relationship is one of John’s central Christological structures (over 40 occurrences across the book) — it expresses both unity of purpose and distinction of persons | থাবিরকপা (thabirakpa) — built on the same root as the baseline’s apostle entry (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা, “one who has been sent”) | High — directly relevant to the curriculum doctrine “Unity of the Father and the Son”: the Son’s being sent by the Father shows relational distinction without any inequality of essence; must not be read as a subordinate messenger relationship of the maiba/maibi type (a human ritual specialist “sent” or possessed by a deity) |
| condemn | κρίνω (krinō) | “to judge, decide, condemn” | Here specifically in the negative/condemning sense | condemn, judge against | Christ’s first coming was not primarily for judgment but for rescue (contrast final judgment, later in John and in the wider NT) | ৱায়েল (wayel) | High — see full judgment/κρίσις entry under 3:18-19 |
| saved | σωθῇ (sōthē, from σῴζω sōzō) | “to be saved, rescued, delivered” | Deliverance, rescue | saved, rescued | Reuses the baseline salvation concept | অহানবা (ahanba) — baseline reuse, exact | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
John 3:18
“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
Reuses believe (থাজবা), condemned (ৱায়েল), and only Son of God (অমা খক্তা ওইবা মচানুপা + তেংবাং মপুগী মচানুপা). New emphasis: condemnation is already in force for unbelief — a present-tense verdict, not merely a future one.
John 3:19
“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| judgment | κρίσις (krisis) | “judgment, verdict, decision” | The noun form of κρίνω — here, the verdict itself, revealed by people’s response to the light | judgment, verdict, condemnation | The very presence of Christ as light forces a self-revealing verdict on all who encounter him | ৱায়েল (wayel) | High — ৱায়েল is the ordinary Meitei word for a judicial verdict, including customary clan-council (yumnak/lup) verdicts; must be clearly marked as God’s own righteous verdict, not a human customary-law process, and distinguished from a maibi’s oracular verdict pronounced during Lai Haraoba divination |
| light | φῶς (phōs) | “light” | Christ himself as revealer and judge (cf. 1:4-9, 8:12, 9:5) | light | Christ’s presence exposes moral reality; response to the light is itself the judgment | মমাং (mamang) [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — Sanamahi cosmology describes Atiya Guru Sidaba, the formless, colorless supreme reality preceding creation, in terms closely bound up with primordial light; and Ras Lila staging is deliberately designed to visually evoke Krishna’s own divine radiance (cf. baseline’s “glory” caution). “Light” as a title for Christ in John must be taught with care against both associations |
| darkness | σκοτία (skotia) | “darkness” | Moral/spiritual blindness and opposition to God, not merely physical absence of light | darkness | The default human condition, actively preferred over the light | অমম্বা (amamba) [PROVISIONAL] | Medium |
| works | ἔργα (erga) | “works, deeds” | Deeds, actions — morally qualified as evil or good depending on context | works, deeds, actions | Evil deeds are the reason light is avoided | থবক (thabak) | Medium — distinguish from devotional seva (ritual service performed to build bhakti standing), which functions differently in the Vaishnava framework; John’s “works” here are simply morally evaluated deeds, not a merit-accruing devotional system |
John 3:20-21
“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| does what is true | ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν (ho poiōn tēn alētheian) | “the one doing the truth” | A Hebraic idiom: living in covenant faithfulness/integrity, not merely holding correct beliefs | does what is true, lives by the truth | Genuine, truth-shaped living is drawn toward the light rather than fleeing it | অচুম্বা তৌবা (achumba touba), “to do/practice the truth” | Medium — অচুম্বা reuses the same root morpheme as the baseline’s righteousness term (অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক), reinforcing internal consistency between Paul’s forensic righteousness and John’s relational/ethical “truth” |
| truth | ἀλήθεια (alētheia) | “truth, reality” | Not merely factual accuracy but ultimate reality revealed in Christ (cf. 1:14,17; 14:6; 18:38) | truth | One of John’s most theologically loaded words, climaxing in Christ’s own claim “I am…the truth” (14:6) | অচুম্বা (achumba) | High — Manipuri colloquial speech may reach for the Sanskrit/Bengali loanword সত্য (satya) for ordinary “truth”; this curriculum should prefer অচুম্বা for John’s theological uses to maintain consistency with the baseline righteousness term and to avoid competing with সত্য’s broader philosophical resonance in regional Hindu thought (e.g. Satya as a divine attribute in bhakti hymnody) |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER ANALYSIS OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 — The Word Made Flesh; Testimony and First Disciples
| Term | Greek (translit.) | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Manipuri rendering (translit.) | Risk |
|---|
| the Word | ὁ Λόγος (ho Logos) | “the word, speech, reasoned utterance” | In John 1:1-18, a personal title for the pre-existent, divine, creative agent who becomes flesh — not a Stoic impersonal cosmic principle nor a Vedic sound-principle | the Word, the Logos | Christ’s eternal pre-existence and full deity, established before any narrative action begins | ৱাহৈ (Waihei), used as a fixed personal title, e.g. তেংবাং মপুগী ৱাহৈ (God’s Word) [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — this is the anchor term for the named doctrine “The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word).” Two collision risks require explicit handling: (1) the broader Hindu philosophical category of Śabda-Brahman (sound/word as ultimate divine reality), which has entered elite Sanskrit-influenced religious reflection accompanying Manipuri Vaishnavism; (2) the risk of ৱাহৈ being heard as merely “a message” rather than a personal, eternal divine agent. Every occurrence in ch.1 must retain the personal, capitalized-title sense |
| was (eternally) | ἦν (ēn, imperfect of εἰμί) | “was” (continuous past, not “became”) | Deliberately contrasted in 1:1-3 with ἐγένετο (“came into being,” used of everything created) | was, existed | John’s grammar itself asserts the Word’s eternal pre-existence, prior to and outside of creation | লৈরম্মী (leirammi), “already/continuously existed” | High — the was/became distinction is theologically load-bearing and should be preserved with a translator’s note if Manipuri tense-aspect marking cannot carry it unambiguously |
| became flesh | σὰρξ ἐγένετο (sarx egeneto) | “flesh came-to-be” | The eternal Word’s unique historical entry into human nature | became flesh, was incarnate | The event named by the baseline’s incarnation doctrine | মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (miwoigi mahai louba) — baseline reuse, exact | CRITICAL (baseline-inherited) — NEVER অবতার; John 1:14 is this doctrine’s primary textual anchor |
| grace and truth | χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια (charis kai alētheia) | “favor and truth/faithfulness” | Echoes God’s OT self-revelation to Moses (Exodus 34:6, “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness”) | grace and truth, unfailing love and faithfulness | Christ as the full and final revelation of God’s covenant character | মথৌ তাদনা পীবা তেংবাং (grace, baseline reuse) + অচুম্বা (truth) | Critical (grace, baseline-inherited) / High (truth) |
| only Son / only-begotten | μονογενής (monogenēs) | see 3:16 above | — | only Son, only-begotten | First introduced here (1:14,18), establishing the term before its climactic reuse in 3:16,18 | অমা খক্তা ওইবা মচানুপা | CRITICAL |
| dwelt (tabernacled) | ἐσκήνωσεν (eskēnōsen) | “pitched his tent, tabernacled” | Deliberate echo of God’s tabernacling presence with Israel (Exodus 25-40) | dwelt, tabernacled, lived among | God’s presence now dwells personally and permanently in the incarnate Son | লৈরুরম্মী (leirurammi), “dwelt/lived among” | Medium — requires OT tabernacle background teaching |
| bear witness | μαρτυρέω (martyreō) | see 3:11 above | — | testify, bear witness | John the Baptist’s entire role in ch.1 is defined by testimony, not by being “the light” himself (1:6-8) | সাক্ষী পীবা (sakkhi piba) | High |
| Lamb of God | ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ (ho amnos tou theou) | “the lamb of God” | Sacrificial/Passover imagery; “who takes away the sin of the world” (1:29) | Lamb of God | Substitutionary, sin-bearing sacrifice — anchors the curriculum doctrine of Christ’s substitutionary death from the book’s opening chapter | তেংবাং মপুগী য়াওবী (Tengban Mapugi Yaobi) [PROVISIONAL] | High — sheep/lamb are not a major traditional Meitei sacrificial animal (Sanamahi ritual sacrifice more typically involves fowl, pig, or buffalo; Vaishnavism, shaped by ahimsā, rejects animal sacrifice altogether). This image requires explicit OT Passover/Levitical sacrificial background teaching, since neither living local tradition offers a ready cultural bridge, and Vaishnavism actively opposes the underlying practice on doctrinal grounds |
| Rabbi / Messiah (explicitly glossed) | ῥαββί / Χριστός (Rhabbi / Christos) | — | John explicitly glosses “Messiah” as “Christ” for a non-Hebrew-speaking audience (1:41) | Rabbi; Messiah/Christ | Establishes ক্রিস্তো (baseline reuse) as the fixed rendering from the book’s first chapter | ক্রিস্তো (Christo) — baseline reuse, exact | CRITICAL (baseline-inherited) |
| children of God | τέκνα θεοῦ (tekna theou) | “children of God” | Birth-based (organic) family belonging, distinct from Paul’s legal-adoption image (υἱοθεσία) | children of God, sons of God | Received “not of blood nor of the will of the flesh…but of God” (1:12-13) — ties directly to the new-birth doctrine of ch.3 | তেংবাং মপুগী মচা (Tengban Mapugi macha) | High — complements rather than duplicates the baseline’s adoption entry (মচা ওইনা লৌবা, a legal-status image); John’s organic birth-image and Paul’s legal-adoption image must be taught as two compatible pictures of the same reality, not conflated into one term |
| authority / right | ἐξουσία (exousia) | “authority, right, permission” | Delegated right, distinct from raw power/δύναμις | right, authority, power | Believers are given the right to become God’s children (1:12) | অধিকার (adhikar) | Medium — distinguish from শক্তি (baseline-forbidden for divine power, associated with maibi trance-power); also distinguish from the traditional political-religious authority of the Meitei ningthou (king), tied to Pakhangba descent |
Chapter 2 — Cana and the Temple
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| sign | σημεῖον (sēmeion) | see 3:2 | — | sign, miracle | The Cana miracle is John’s “first sign” (2:11), revealing Christ’s glory | খুদম (khudam) | Medium (see 3:2 entry) |
| glory | δόξα (doxa) | “glory, honor, radiance” | Revealed divine honor manifested through the sign | glory | ”…and his disciples believed in him” (2:11) — signs exist to reveal glory and produce faith | মতিক চাউবা (matik chauba) — baseline reuse, exact | High (baseline-inherited) |
| zeal / consumed | ζῆλος (zēlos, 2:17, quoting Ps 69:9) | “zeal, jealousy” | Passionate devotion to God’s house | zeal | Jesus’ temple action interpreted through Scripture as righteous zeal, not mere anger | থমোই হেনবা (thamoi henba), “burning devotion/zeal” | Low |
| his hour (had not yet come) | ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ (hē hōra autou) | “his hour” | A recurring Johannine time-marker for the appointed moment of the cross/glorification (see also 7:30, 8:20, 12:23, 13:1, 17:1) | his hour, his time | Introduces a motif that runs through the entire book, culminating in “the hour has come” at the Passion | মহাক্কী পুং (mahakki pung), “his hour/time” | Medium — track consistently across all chapters as a structural motif |
Chapter 3 — continued: John 3:22-36 (beyond the core passage)
The core passage (3:1-21) is treated verse-by-verse above. The remainder of the chapter continues John the Baptist’s testimony and introduces additional load-bearing terms.
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| bridegroom / friend of the bridegroom | νυμφίος (numphios) | “bridegroom” | Christ as bridegroom, John the Baptist as best man/friend | bridegroom, friend of the bridegroom | John the Baptist’s joyful, subordinate role relative to Christ | মনু-ওইবা (manu-oiba), “bridegroom” | Low |
| must increase / must decrease | δεῖ αὐξάνειν / ἐμὲ ἐλαττοῦσθαι (dei auxanein / eme elattousthai) | “must grow / I must diminish” | John the Baptist’s self-effacing recognition of Christ’s supremacy | he must increase, I must decrease | A model of right response to Christ’s Lordship | হেনগৎলগনি / হন্থাহল্লগনি (henngatlaganee / hanthahalganee, “will increase / will decrease”) | Low |
| wrath of God | ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (hē orgē tou theou) | “the anger/wrath of God” | God’s settled, righteous judicial opposition to sin and unbelief — not capricious or arbitrary anger | wrath of God, God’s anger | The negative counterpart to eternal life for the one who “does not obey the Son” (3:36) | তেংবাং মপুগী অসাউবা (Tengban Mapugi asauba) [PROVISIONAL] | High/Critical — must be sharply distinguished from a capricious Umang Lai deity’s anger at ritual neglect (traditionally addressed through propitiatory Lai Haraoba offerings via a maibi/maiba) or from Vaishnava atonement rites (prāyaścitta) that appease divine displeasure through ritual action. God’s wrath in John is a holy, moral-judicial response to unbelief, resolved only through faith in the Son, not through any ritual of appeasement |
| he who comes from above | ὁ ἐπάνω πάντων ἐρχόμενος (ho epanō pantōn erchomenos) | “the one coming from above all” | Restates the pre-existence/descent theme of 3:13 | he who comes from above | Reinforces the Critical descent/avatāra-collision risk already flagged at 3:13 | স্বর্গদগী লকপা (sorgodagi lakpa), “the one coming from heaven” | CRITICAL (see 3:13) |
Chapter 4 — The Samaritan Woman; Living Water; Worship in Spirit and Truth
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| living water | ὕδωρ ζῶν (hydōr zōn) | “living/flowing water” | Metaphor for the Spirit-given life Christ supplies, which becomes an internal, self-renewing source (4:14) | living water | Christ alone satisfies the deepest human thirst permanently | হিংবগী ঈশিং (hingbagi ising) | Medium — ties directly to eternal life (হিংবা) and the Spirit; distinguish from ritually “living” (flowing, as opposed to stagnant) water used in Lai Haraoba or Vaishnava ablution rites, where flowing water carries ritual-purity significance rather than Christ’s self-giving life |
| worship in spirit and truth | προσκυνέω…ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ (proskyneō…en pneumati kai alētheia) | “to worship…in spirit and truth” | True worship is no longer tied to a specific geographic sanctuary but is enabled by the Spirit and grounded in truth | worship in spirit and truth | Redefines worship away from place (Jerusalem vs. Samaria) toward relationship with the Father through the Spirit | থাওয়াই অসেংবাগা অচুম্বাগা লোয়ননা খুরুম্জবা (thawai asengbaga achumbaga loinana khurumjaba) | High — খুরুম্জবা (worship/obeisance) is also the ordinary Meitei verb for respectful greeting extended to elders, royalty, and deities alike; this passage’s exclusive, Spirit-truth-grounded worship of the one true God must be marked clearly apart from customary reverence gestures given at a Vaishnava temple or an Umang Lai sacred grove |
| worship | προσκυνέω (proskyneō) | “to bow down, prostrate, worship” | Reverent submission/homage | worship | See above | খুরুম্জবা (khurumjaba) | High |
| Savior of the world | ὁ σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου (ho sōtēr tou kosmou) | “the savior of the world” | The Samaritans’ confession (4:42) — universal scope of Christ’s saving identity | Savior of the world | Anticipates the universal scope later stressed in 3:16-17 and throughout the book | মালেমগী অহানবিরকপা (malemgi ahanbirakpa), built on the baseline’s অহানবা (salvation) | Critical (baseline-inherited root) |
| harvest (spiritual) | θερισμός (therismos) | “harvest” | Metaphor for gathering believers into the kingdom | harvest | Missional urgency | লৌথোকপগী থৌদাং (louthokpagi thoudang), “harvest task” | Low |
Chapter 5 — Healing at Bethesda; the Son’s Authority and Testimony Chain
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| equal with God | ἴσος τῷ θεῷ (isos tō theō) | “equal to God” | The Jewish leaders’ accusation against Jesus for calling God “his own Father” (5:18) — recognized correctly by his opponents as a deity claim | equal with God, making himself God | A hostile witness to the very truth John’s Gospel affirms: full co-equality of the Son with the Father | তেংবাং মপুগা মান্নবা (Tengban Mapuga mannaba) | Critical — central to the Deity of Christ doctrine; render forcefully, without softening, even though it is voiced here as an accusation |
| honor the Son as they honor the Father | τιμᾷ τὸν υἱὸν καθὼς τιμῶσι τὸν πατέρα (tima ton huion kathōs timōsi ton patera) | “honor the son as [they honor] the father” | Equal honor due to the Son as to the Father | honor the Son | Direct claim of the Son’s rightful deity-level worship | ইপাবু ইকাই খুম্নবগুম্না মচানুপাবুশু ইকাই খুম্নবা (respect the Son as one respects the Father) | Critical |
| resurrection of life / resurrection of judgment | ἀνάστασις ζωῆς / ἀνάστασις κρίσεως (anastasis zōēs / anastasis kriseōs) | “resurrection of life / resurrection of judgment” | Final bodily resurrection unto either eternal life or condemnation | resurrection of life, resurrection of judgment | Eschatological outcome tied to present faith/unbelief | হিংবগী সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা / ৱায়েলগী সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা — built on baseline resurrection term | Critical (baseline-inherited root) — never পুনর্জন্ম |
| testimony (fourfold chain) | μαρτυρία (martyria) | see 3:11 | John the Baptist, the Father, Jesus’ own works, and the Scriptures all “testify” to Christ (5:31-39) | testimony, witness | A structured legal-style case for Christ’s identity | সাক্ষী পীবা | High |
Chapter 6 — Bread of Life Discourse (I AM #1)
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the bread of life | ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς (egō eimi ho artos tēs zōēs) | “I am the bread of life” | First of the Seven “I Am” predicate statements | I am the bread of life | Christ alone permanently satisfies spiritual hunger, contrasted with the temporary manna of the wilderness | ঐ হিংবগী রুটি অসি (ei hingbagi ruti asi) | Critical — see dedicated “I Am Statements” entry in the glossary; also see bread of life entry below |
| bread of life | ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς (ho artos tēs zōēs) | “the bread of life” | Life-sustaining, Christ’s own self-gift, contrasted with the manna that only sustained physical life temporarily | bread of life, living bread | Christ as the sole, sufficient source of eternal nourishment | হিংবগী রুটি (hingbagi ruti) | Medium — rice (চাক), not bread, is the Manipuri dietary staple; রুটি (a pan-Indic loanword for flatbread) is recommended to preserve fidelity to the manna/Passover-bread background rather than substituting চাক, which would lose the wilderness-manna typology entirely |
| draw | ἑλκύσῃ (helkysē, from ἕλκω helkō) | “to draw, pull” | The Father’s sovereign initiative in bringing someone to Christ (6:44) | draw, bring | Ties directly to the doctrine of effectual/sovereign calling already flagged Critical in the baseline | থিংথোকপা (thingthokpa) | High — connects to the baseline’s election (তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা) and calling (কৌখিবা) entries; must not be read as impersonal fate (ৱাইফম, already forbidden) |
| flesh and blood (eucharistic language) | σάρξ καὶ αἷμα (sarx kai haima, 6:53-56) | “flesh and blood” | Figurative/sacramental language for total reliance on Christ’s atoning death | eat my flesh, drink my blood | Provocative imagery pointing to Christ’s substitutionary death; not literal cannibalism, and not a ritual-merit-generating rite | হাক্চাং অমসুং ঈ (hakchang amasung ee) | High — requires explicit teaching to avoid two misreadings: (1) crude literalism, and (2) assimilation into a Vaishnava prasādam (consecrated-food) framework where consuming blessed food/drink transmits divine grace as a repeatable devotional practice |
| Holy One of God | ὁ ἅγιος τοῦ θεοῦ (ho hagios tou theou) | “the Holy One of God” | Peter’s confession (6:69) | Holy One of God | An early high confession of Christ’s unique holiness/deity | তেংবাং মপুগী অসেংবা (Tengban Mapugi asengba) — built on baseline holy (অসেংবা) | High (baseline-inherited root) |
Chapter 7 — Feast of Tabernacles; Living Water Again
No major new theological terms beyond those already established. Reuses: living water (হিংবগী ঈশিং, ch.4), Spirit not yet given (থাওয়াই অসেংবা, baseline), his hour (মহাক্কী পুং, ch.2), Messiah/Christ (ক্রিস্তো, baseline), belief and division over Jesus’ identity (থাজবা, baseline). Chapter reviewed; no new glossary entries required.
Chapter 8 — Light of the World; Truth Sets Free; the Absolute “I Am”
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the light of the world | ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου (egō eimi to phōs tou kosmou) | “I am the light of the world” | Second “I Am” statement (repeated in 9:5) | I am the light of the world | Universal illumination and moral exposure, offered to “the world,” not one ethnic group | ঐ মালেমগী মমাং অসি (ei malemgi mamang asi) | Critical — see light entry at 3:19 for the Atiya Sidaba / Ras Lila radiance collision risk |
| the truth will set you free | ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς (hē alētheia eleutherōsei hymas) | “the truth will free you” | Truth (knowing Christ, cf. 8:31-32) breaks the power of sin’s slavery | the truth will set you free | Freedom is from sin’s bondage, not from social/ritual constraint | অচুম্বানা নিং তাহনগনি (achumbana ning tahangani) | Medium |
| slaves to sin | δοῦλος τῆς ἁμαρτίας (doulos tēs hamartias) | “slave of sin” | Bondage to a sin-nature, not merely occasional wrongdoing | slave to sin | Universal human condition apart from Christ | পাপ্কী লামেল (papki lamel), “slave/bondservant of sin” | Medium — builds on baseline sin (পাপ) |
| absolute “I am” (before Abraham was, I AM) | ἐγὼ εἰμί (egō eimi, 8:58) | “I am” (unqualified, no predicate) | Deliberate echo of the divine self-name of Exodus 3:14 LXX (ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν) | I am, before Abraham was I am | A direct, unqualified claim to the divine name and eternal pre-existence — the strongest deity-claim in the chapter | ঐহাক ঐ অসি (eihak ei asi), “I myself AM” | CRITICAL — Manipuri grammar has no exact structural equivalent to the Greek’s emphatic absolute construction; this occurrence (and its parallels in 8:24, 8:28, 13:19, 18:5-6,8) requires a mandatory translator’s note connecting it to the divine name revealed to Moses, since a plain rendering could otherwise be misread as an ordinary self-identifying statement |
| devil, father of lies | ὁ διάβολος…ψεύστης (ho diabolos…pseustēs, 8:44) | “the devil…a liar” | Personal, malevolent spiritual being opposed to truth | devil, father of lies | Establishes a real personal spiritual antagonist, distinct from an impersonal moral-flaw concept | লান্মী (lanmi), “adversary/devil” | Medium — distinguish from any morally ambivalent or ancestral spirit category in Sanamahi belief; the biblical devil is wholly and only malevolent |
Chapter 9 — The Man Born Blind; Light and Judgment as Division
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the light of the world (restated) | ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου (9:5) | — | — | I am the light of the world | Repeats 8:12’s claim in a new healing-narrative context | ঐ মালেমগী মমাং অসি | Critical (see ch.8) |
| worship (of Jesus by the healed man) | προσεκύνησεν (prosekynēsen, 9:38) | “worshiped” | The first explicit worship of Jesus as an act of faith recorded in the book | worshiped him | The healed man’s confession of faith culminates in an act of worship directed at Jesus himself | খুরুম্জবা (khurumjaba) | High (see ch.4 worship entry) — here directed unambiguously at Jesus, reinforcing his deity |
| judgment (as division) | κρίμα (krima, 9:39) | “judgment” | Christ’s coming causes a revealing division between those who see (believe) and those who claim sight but are blind (unbelief) | judgment, division | Reuses the ৱায়েল judgment concept in a new narrative application | ৱায়েল (wayel) | High (see ch.3) |
Chapter 10 — I Am the Good Shepherd; I Am the Door; Unity of Father and Son
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the door | ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα (egō eimi hē thyra) | “I am the door” | Third “I Am” statement | I am the door/gate | Sole legitimate access to salvation and the sheepfold | ঐ থোঙাল অসি (ei thongal asi) | Critical |
| I am the good shepherd | ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός (egō eimi ho poimēn ho kalos) | “I am the good shepherd” | Fourth “I Am” statement | I am the good shepherd | Contrasted with a hired hand who flees danger; the good shepherd’s defining mark is willingness to die for the sheep | ঐ য়াও চৌথোকপা ফবা অসি (ei yao chouthokpa phaba asi) [PROVISIONAL] | Critical — pastoral/herding imagery is culturally distant from Manipur’s rice-agrarian valley economy and requires explanatory background; the central point — voluntary substitutionary self-sacrifice — must not be lost to unfamiliarity with the shepherd role itself |
| lay down (his) life | τίθησιν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ (tithēsin tēn psychēn autou) | “lays down his life/soul” | Voluntary, purposeful, substitutionary self-giving | lay down his life | The central textual anchor for the curriculum doctrine “Christ’s Substitutionary Death” | হিংবা পীথোকপা (hingba pithokpa) | High — deliberately avoids থাওয়াই (which would collide with the fixed Holy Spirit compound থাওয়াই অসেংবা); must be taught as a unique, historical, once-for-all voluntary act, not a repeatable devotional posture of self-surrender (cf. Vaishnava prapatti/self-surrender to Krishna) or a maibi’s trance-state self-offering |
| one flock, one shepherd | μία ποίμνη, εἷς ποιμήν (mia poimnē, heis poimēn) | “one flock, one shepherd” | Unity of all believers (Jew and Gentile) under Christ’s shepherding | one flock, one shepherd | Anticipates the unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrine already flagged High in the baseline | অমা ওইবা য়াও-পুম্বা, অমা ওইবা য়াও চৌথোকপা | High (baseline-inherited theme) |
| authority (to lay down life, to take it up again) | ἐξουσίαν (exousian, 10:18) | see ch.1 | — | authority, power | Christ’s death is fully voluntary, under his own sovereign authority — not something merely inflicted on him | অধিকার (adhikar) | Medium (see ch.1) |
| I and the Father are one | ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν (egō kai ho patēr hen esmen, 10:30) | “I and the Father are one” | Essential unity of nature/being (ἕν is neuter — one thing/reality, not merely one person or one purpose) | I and the Father are one | The direct textual anchor for the curriculum doctrine “Unity of the Father and the Son” | ঐগা ইপাগা অমা ওইবি (eiga ipaga ama oibi) | CRITICAL — must be taught as co-essential unity within the one Godhead (Trinitarian unity-in-distinction), not as pantheistic merging/absorption (a risk paralleling both a devotee’s aspiration for mystical union with Krishna in some bhakti schools, and any residual monistic Brahman-Atman identity concept present in broader regional Hindu philosophical discourse) |
| Scripture cannot be broken | οὐ δύναται λυθῆναι ἡ γραφή (ou dynatai lythēnai hē graphē, 10:35) | “the Scripture cannot be loosed/annulled” | Full authority and reliability of the OT Scriptures | Scripture cannot be broken | Ties to the baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine, already flagged High with specific sensitivity to Meitei cultural memory of the 1729 Puya Meithaba manuscript-burning | অসেংবা ৱারোল থুগাইথোকপা য়াদে (asengba warol thugaithokpa yade) | High (baseline-inherited doctrine) |
Chapter 11 — Lazarus; I Am the Resurrection and the Life
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the resurrection and the life | ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή (egō eimi hē anastasis kai hē zōē) | “I am the resurrection and the life” | Fifth “I Am” statement | I am the resurrection and the life | Christ himself, not merely a future event, IS resurrection and life — present tense victory over death | ঐ সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা অমসুং হিংবা অসি (ei sibadagi hingjat-lakpa amasung hingba asi) | Critical — built entirely on baseline resurrection (সিবদগী হিংজত-লকপা, never পুনর্জন্ম) plus হিংবা (life); the Lazarus narrative dramatizes bodily, historical resurrection as a preview/sign of Christ’s own resurrection, and must remain sharply distinct from any cyclical-rebirth reading |
| he who believes in me will live, though he dies | ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ…ζήσεται (11:25) | — | — | though he dies, he will live | Present spiritual life continuing through and beyond physical death | থাজবা তৌবগী মীওই সিবা তরবানি হিংগনি (a believer, though he dies, will live) | Critical (built on reused terms) |
Chapter 12 — Triumphal Entry; the Hour Has Come; Judgment of the World
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| the hour has come | ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα (elēlythen hē hōra, 12:23) | “the hour has come” | The appointed time-marker (see ch.2) reaches fulfillment | the hour has come | The Passion narrative is now underway | পুং লক্লবা (pung laklaba), “the hour has come” | Medium (structural motif, see ch.2) |
| a grain of wheat…dies…bears much fruit | ἐὰν μὴ ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου…ἀποθάνῃ (12:24) | “unless the grain of wheat…dies” | Metaphor for Christ’s death producing much spiritual fruit (and a pattern for discipleship) | a grain of wheat must die | Substitutionary/fruitful death | চনম মরুক সিবা তরবদি (a wheat grain must die) | Medium |
| ruler of this world (cast out) | ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου (ho archōn tou kosmou toutou, 12:31) | “the ruler of this world” | Satan’s derivative, temporary, already-defeated rule over the fallen world-system | ruler of this world, prince of this world | Christ’s death/exaltation decisively judges and casts out the usurping ruler | মালেমগী মপু (malemgi mapu) | High — মপু is the same honorific root used for Christ’s own Lordship title (মপু ইবুংগো, baseline); when applied to Satan here, it must be clearly marked as an illegitimate, temporary, already-judged claim to rule, never suggesting parity with Christ’s true, exclusive Lordship |
| draw all people to myself | πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν (pantas helkysō pros emauton, 12:32) | “I will draw all to myself” | Universal drawing power exercised through the cross (“lifted up,” repeating 3:14) | draw all men to myself | Reuses “lifted up” (থাংজিনবা) and “draw” (থিংথোকপা) — both already flagged | থিংথোকপা / থাংজিনবা | High/Critical (see ch.3, ch.6) |
| loved the glory of man more than the glory of God | ἠγάπησαν…τὴν δόξαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων μᾶλλον ἤπερ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ (12:43) | — | — | loved human praise more than God’s praise | A warning against fear-driven concealment of faith | মীওইগী মতিক চাউবাবু তেংবাং মপুগী মতিক চাউবাদগী হেন্না নুংশিবা | High (built on reused terms) |
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| new commandment | ἐντολὴν καινήν (entolēn kainēn, 13:34) | “a new commandment” | Christ’s command to “love one another as I have loved you” | new commandment | Reuses baseline law/commandment root (য়াথাং) with “new” | অনৌবা য়াথাং (anouba yathang) | Medium (baseline-inherited root) |
| love one another | ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους (agapate allēlous) | “love one another” | Community-defining mark of discipleship, modeled on Christ’s own self-giving love | love one another | The visible evidence of belonging to Christ (13:35) | অমাগা অমাগা নুংশিনবা (amaga amaga nungsinaba) | Critical — see love entry at 3:16; this command’s love-standard (“as I have loved you,” i.e., unto self-sacrificial death) must be clearly distinguished from Ras Lila’s romantic-devotional Radha-Krishna love paradigm |
| where I am going you cannot come now | ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε…νῦν (13:33,36) | — | — | where I am going you cannot follow now | Anticipates the Father’s house/way-truth-life discourse of ch.14 | ঐ চৎলগনি মফমদা নখোয় হৌজিক লাক্তব-দে | Low |
Chapter 14 — I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; the Counselor
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the way, and the truth, and the life | ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή (egō eimi hē hodos kai hē alētheia kai hē zōē) | “I am the way and the truth and the life” | Sixth “I Am” statement (or seventh, depending on enumeration tradition — see glossary note on counting) | I am the way, the truth, and the life | Exclusive access to the Father: “no one comes to the Father except through me” | ঐ লম্বী, অচুম্বা, অমসুং হিংবা অসি (ei lambi, achumba, amasung hingba asi) | Critical — the exclusivity clause (14:6b) must never be softened; combines the way (new term, লম্বী “path/road”), truth (অচুম্বা, reused), and life (হিংবা, reused) |
| Father’s house, many rooms | ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ πατρός μου μοναὶ πολλαί (14:2) | “in my Father’s house are many dwelling-places” | Promised future dwelling with God | many rooms/mansions | Comfort for the disciples’ present grief; a relational, not architectural, promise | ইপাগী য়ুমদা ফম কয়া লৈ (ipagi yumda pham kaya lei) | Low |
| Counselor / Advocate / Comforter | ὁ παράκλητος (ho paraklētos) | “one called to one’s side” — helper, advocate, comforter, defense-counsel | The Holy Spirit’s personal, distinct role as helper and advocate for believers after Christ’s departure | Counselor, Comforter, Advocate, Helper | THE anchor term for the named curriculum doctrine “The Holy Spirit as Counselor” | পাংজিনবিরকপা থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Pangjinbirakpa Thawai Asengba), “the Holy Spirit who comes alongside to help” [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — built in deliberate structural parallel to the baseline’s apostle entry (তবিদগী থাবিরকপা, “one sent”) to preserve the sense of a personally-commissioned role; the compound must always retain অসেংবা (per the baseline’s absolute rule against bare থাওয়াই) so this personal, distinct-but-not-separate divine Helper is never assimilated into a maibi’s mediumistic role as channel for an Umang Lai deity’s comfort/counsel, nor into an ancestral household spirit (Apokpa) invoked for protection |
| Spirit of truth | τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας (to pneuma tēs alētheias) | “the Spirit of truth” | A parallel title for the Paraclete | Spirit of truth | Emphasizes the Spirit’s role in guiding believers into all truth | অচুম্বাগী থাওয়াই অসেংবা (Achumbagi Thawai Asengba) | Critical (built on baseline root) |
| Father is greater than I | ὁ πατὴρ μου μείζων μού ἐστιν (14:28) | “my Father is greater than I” | Functional/relational statement (the incarnate Son’s submitted mission-role), not an essential-nature statement | the Father is greater than I | Requires careful teaching alongside 10:30 (“I and the Father are one”) to preserve both unity of essence and distinction of role within the Trinity | ইপা ঐদগী হেন্না চাউই (Ipa eidagi henna chaui) | Critical — must be taught in explicit tandem with the unity-of-Father-and-Son doctrine (ch.10, ch.17) to prevent a subordinationist misreading; this is a functional/mission statement about the incarnate Son, not a statement of unequal divine essence |
| peace I leave with you | εἰρήνην ἀφίημι ὑμῖν (14:27) | “peace I leave to you” | Christ’s own peace, distinct from worldly peace | peace I leave with you, my peace I give you | Reuses the baseline peace term | ইনগবা (ingba) — baseline reuse, exact | Medium (baseline-inherited) |
Chapter 15 — I Am the True Vine; Abiding; Love One Another; the World’s Hatred
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am the true vine | ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἄμπελος ἡ ἀληθινή (egō eimi hē ampelos hē alēthinē) | “I am the true vine” | Seventh “I Am” statement | I am the true vine | Draws on OT vineyard-Israel imagery (Isaiah 5, Psalm 80); believers are fruitful only through organic connection to Christ | ঐ অচুম্বা লৈহাও অসি (ei achumba leihao asi) [PROVISIONAL] | Critical — viticulture is agriculturally distant from Manipur’s rice-based valley economy; the OT vineyard=Israel covenant background must be taught explicitly for the “true” (অচুম্বা) qualifier and the branch/fruit metaphor to carry full weight |
| abide | μένω (menō) | “to remain, stay, dwell” | Continuing, dependent relational connection to Christ, not a one-time event | abide, remain | ”Apart from me you can do nothing” (15:5) | লৈরিবা (leiriba) | Medium — a relational, ongoing dependence, not geographic/ritual proximity to a sacred site (e.g. remaining within an Umang Lai grove’s precinct for divine favor) |
| chosen / appointed you | ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς (exelexamēn hymas, 15:16,19) | “I chose you” | Sovereign, initiating divine choice | I chose you | Directly reuses the baseline election doctrine | তেংবাং মপুগী খনবা (Tengban Mapugi khanba) — baseline reuse, exact | High (baseline-inherited) |
| friends, not servants | φίλους…οὐκέτι δούλους (15:15) | “friends…no longer servants/slaves” | Intimacy of relationship granted to believers | I no longer call you servants but friends | Relational warmth appropriate to formal register per the system prompt’s Ch.14-15 warmth guidance | মরুওই নত্তনা মরূপ (marup, “friend,” not মরুওই “servant”) | Low |
| the world hates you | ὁ κόσμος ὑμᾶς μισεῖ (15:18-19) | — | — | the world hates you | κόσμος here is the hostile world-system sense, contrasted with 3:16’s loved-object sense — same word, opposite valence | মালেমনা নখোয়বু তুকই (malemna nakhoibu tukai) | High (see 3:16 world entry — track sense per occurrence) |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Convicting Work; Sorrow Turned to Joy; Overcoming the World
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| convict (of sin, righteousness, judgment) | ἐλέγξει (elegxei, from ἐλέγχω elegchō, 16:8) | “to expose, convict, prove wrong” | The Spirit’s convicting work in the world regarding sin, righteousness, and judgment | convict, convince, expose | The Spirit’s ministry after Christ’s departure, tied to the Counselor doctrine (ch.14) | মায়োক্তা পীথোকপা (mayokta pithokpa), “to expose/bring to light” | High (Counselor doctrine, ch.14) |
| overcome the world | ἐγὼ νενίκηκα τὸν κόσμον (16:33) | “I have overcome the world” | Christ’s decisive victory over the hostile world-system | I have overcome the world | Assurance grounded in Christ’s finished victory, not in circumstance | ঐনা মালেমবু মায়ক ফাংলে (eina malembu mayok phangle) [PROVISIONAL] | Medium — care should be taken that “overcoming the world” is not heard through a martial-heroic lens resonant with Meitei warrior traditions (e.g. Thang-Ta, associated with Sanamahi ancestor-heroes); Christ’s victory is spiritual and already accomplished, not a call to martial conquest |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer: Glory, Unity, Sanctification
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| eternal life (defined) | ζωὴ αἰώνιος…ἵνα γινώσκωσί σε (17:3) | “eternal life…that they may know you” | John’s own definition of eternal life: knowing the true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent | eternal life is this: to know you | Confirms eternal life is fundamentally relational knowledge of God, not liberation or absorption | অতৈ লৈতবা হিংবা — তেংবাং মপুবু খংবা (eternal life — knowing God) | Critical (see 3:15-16) — this verse is the strongest textual basis for teaching eternal life as relational knowledge, not মোক্ষ-style liberation |
| glory (given before the world began) | δόξαν…πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι (17:5,24) | “glory…before the world existed” | Explicit pre-existence claim: the Son shared the Father’s glory before creation | glory before the world began | Direct textual support for the Deity and Pre-existence doctrine | মতিক চাউবা (matik chauba) — baseline reuse, exact | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
| sanctify (them in truth) | ἁγίασον αὐτούς ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ (17:17,19) | “sanctify/consecrate them in the truth” | Set apart for holy purpose, through God’s truth-revealing word | sanctify, consecrate | Reuses baseline sanctification vocabulary | অসেংবা ওইহনবা (asengba oihanba) — baseline reuse, exact | High (baseline-inherited) |
| that they may be one, as we are one | ἵνα ὦσιν ἕν καθὼς ἡμεῖς ἕν (17:11,21-22) | “that they may be one as we are one” | Believers’ relational unity, patterned on (though not identical to) the Father-Son unity of essence | that they may be one | The clearest textual link between the Unity-of-Father-and-Son doctrine and the church’s own call to unity | অমা ওইবা (ama oiba) | CRITICAL — believers’ unity is relational/purposive (patterned after, not identical to) the Father-Son ontological unity of 10:30; must not be taught as believers achieving the same essential divine unity, and must not be read through a mystical-absorption bhakti lens or a monistic Brahman-Atman lens |
Chapter 18 — Arrest and Trial: “I Am He”; My Kingdom Is Not of This World
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| I am he | ἐγώ εἰμι (egō eimi, 18:5-6,8) | “I am” | The same absolute self-identification as 8:58, now spoken to the arresting soldiers, who visibly recoil/fall back at the words | I am he | A final echo of the divine-name claim, even as Christ submits to arrest | ঐহাক ঐ অসি (eihak ei asi) | CRITICAL (see ch.8) |
| my kingdom is not of this world | ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου (18:36) | “my kingdom is not from this world” | Christ’s kingship is not a rival political-territorial claim | my kingdom is not of this world | Distinguishes Christ’s kingship from any earthly political kingship, including implicitly the historic Meitei ningthou’s Pakhangba-descent political-religious kingship model already flagged in the baseline’s kingdom_of_god entry | তেংবাং মপুগী লৈপাক অসি মালেম অসিগী নত্তে (this kingdom is not of this world) — built on baseline term | High (baseline-inherited root) |
| what is truth? | τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια; (18:38) | “what is truth?” | Pilate’s skeptical/dismissive question, ironically addressed to Truth incarnate (14:6) | what is truth? | Dramatic irony central to John’s truth-theme | অচুম্বা করি নো? (achumba kari no?) | Medium |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion: It Is Finished
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| It is finished | τετέλεσται (tetelestai) | “it has been completed/accomplished” | A perfect-tense verb declaring a completed, sufficient, once-for-all accomplishment | It is finished, it is accomplished | Christ’s atoning work is fully and finally completed — nothing more is required or can be added | মপুং ফাউরে (mapung phaoure) [PROVISIONAL] | CRITICAL — must convey a completed, sufficient, once-for-all atoning work requiring no supplementation through ongoing devotional service (bhakti seva) or repeated propitiatory ritual (as in Lai Haraoba offerings to maintain right standing with the Umang Lai); this directly extends the baseline’s grace/imputed_righteousness Critical cautions to the cross itself |
| Lamb typology (no bone broken) | ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται (19:36, citing Exodus 12:46) | “not a bone will be broken” | Fulfillment of Passover lamb regulations, confirming Christ as the true Passover Lamb | not one bone broken | Confirms the Lamb of God identification from ch.1 | তেংবাং মপুগী য়াওবী (Tengban Mapugi Yaobi) | High (see ch.1) |
| blood and water | αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ (haima kai hydōr, 19:34) | “blood and water” | Physical confirmation of real death; also carries symbolic resonance (cleansing/life) elsewhere in Johannine theology | blood and water | Confirms the reality and completeness of Christ’s death | ঈ অমসুং ঈশিং (ee amasung ising) | Low |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection: My Lord and My God
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| My Lord and my God | ὁ κύριός μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου (ho kyrios mou kai ho theos mou, 20:28) | “my Lord and my God” | Thomas’s climactic confession — the most direct, unqualified deity-confession in the entire Gospel | My Lord and my God | The Gospel’s theological climax: full, personal, worshipful confession of Christ’s deity | ঐগী মপু ইবুংগো অমসুং ঐগী তেংবাং মপু (eigi Mapu Ibungo amasung eigi Tengban Mapu) — both baseline reuse, exact | CRITICAL (baseline-inherited) — render forcefully and without qualification; this is the direct fulfillment of every Critical deity-of-Christ caution already established in the baseline (avoid ঠাকুর entirely) |
| receive the Holy Spirit | λάβετε πνεῦμα ἅγιον (20:22) | “receive Holy Spirit” | Commissioning gift of the Spirit to the disciples | receive the Holy Spirit | Reuses baseline Holy Spirit term | থাওয়াই অসেংবা লৌবিয়ু (Thawai Asengba loubiyu) — baseline reuse, exact | Critical (baseline-inherited) |
| if you forgive…if you withhold forgiveness | ἄν τινων ἀφῆτε τὰς ἁμαρτίας…ἄν τινων κρατῆτε (20:23) | “forgive sins…withhold” | Delegated declarative authority for the apostolic community regarding forgiveness, grounded in the gospel message, not an independent sacramental power | forgive sins | Reuses baseline sin term and introduces the “forgive” verb | ময়ামদা কোকপা (mayamda kokpa) | High — must be distinguished from a maibi’s or maiba’s ritual absolution/purification act performed on a petitioner’s behalf; this authority is exercised in proclaiming the gospel’s terms, not through independent ritual mediation |
| blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed | μακάριοι οἱ μὴ ἰδόντες καὶ πιστεύσαντες (20:29) | “blessed are those not seeing and believing” | Faith not dependent on physical sight — foundational for every subsequent generation of believers | blessed are those who believe without seeing | Establishes the normative pattern of faith for all who read the Gospel after the apostolic eyewitnesses | য়াইফবা (yaiphaba) | Low |
| that you may believe…and have life in his name | ἵνα πιστεύ[σ]ητε…καὶ…ζωὴν ἔχητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ (20:31) | — | — | that you may believe…and have life in his name | John’s own explicit purpose statement for writing the entire Gospel — parallel in weight to Romans 1:16-17 as the curriculum’s thesis anchor | থাজবা তৌনবগী…মহাক্কী মিংদা হিংবা লৈনবা (that you may believe…and have life in his name) | Critical — recommend a fixed, cross-document-consistent rendering, on the same footing as the baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28 consistency rules |
Chapter 21 — Restoration of Peter: Do You Love Me? Feed My Sheep
| Term | Greek | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Manipuri rendering | Risk |
|---|
| do you love me? (ἀγαπᾷς / φιλεῖς) | ἀγαπᾷς με; / φιλεῖς με; (agapas me / phileis me, 21:15-17) | “do you love [ἀγαπάω] me? / do you love [φιλέω] me?” | Jesus first asks with ἀγαπάω (self-giving, higher love); Peter answers each time with φιλέω (affectionate friendship-love); on the third asking Jesus himself shifts to φιλέω | do you love me? | A pastoral restoration dialogue whose exact nuance depends on tracking two distinct Greek verbs | নুংশিবা (nungsiba) — for both verbs, since Manipuri does not have two lexically distinct roots paralleling ἀγαπάω/φιλέω | Medium — flag as a translation-technique note (nuance loss) rather than a doctrinal risk; a footnote may be used to indicate the underlying Greek shift for study purposes, but no doctrinal content is lost by using নুংশিবা for both, since both Greek verbs denote genuine, non-romantic love in this context |
| feed my sheep / tend my lambs | βόσκε τὰ ἀρνία μου / ποίμαινε τὰ πρόβατα μου (21:15-17) | “feed my lambs / shepherd my sheep” | Pastoral care commissioning for Peter, reusing the good-shepherd imagery of ch.10 | feed my sheep, tend my lambs | Peter is charged with shepherding Christ’s flock, under Christ’s own ultimate shepherding authority | য়াওবীশিংবু য়েনবিয়ু (yaobishingbu yenbiyu) | Medium (see ch.10 shepherd entry) |
| follow me | ἀκολούθει μοι (akolouthei moi) | “follow me” | Renewed call to discipleship after restoration | follow me | Echoes the initial call of the first disciples in ch.1, now personally renewed for Peter | ইনবিয়ু (inbiyu) — builds on baseline obedience_of_faith root (ইনবা) | Medium (baseline-inherited root) |
| his testimony is true | ἀληθής…ἡ μαρτυρία (21:24) | “his testimony is true” | Closing authentication of the Gospel’s eyewitness authorship | his testimony is true | Reuses testimony (সাক্ষী) and truth (অচুম্বা) to close the book as it began — with reliable, truthful testimony | সাক্ষী পীবা…অচুম্বা ওই | High (built on reused terms) |
Summary Observation
John’s Gospel, read across all 21 chapters, surfaces one comparative-religion risk cluster that the Romans baseline did not need to weight as heavily: the vocabulary of descent from heaven, being lifted up, and the seven declarative “I Am” statements sits unusually close to the semantic field occupied by avatāra theology and to the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba’s positive veneration within Sanamahi cosmology. Every occurrence of this vocabulary across chapters 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, and 18 has been flagged Critical for this reason and should be treated as a single connected teaching unit in Phase 2/3 curriculum design, not as isolated verses.
