Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — 2 John | English → Manipuri
Scope and Method
This analysis covers the entire book of 2 John (one chapter, 13 verses), with the core passage 2 John 1:4-11 treated as the theological anchor, not the boundary of analysis. Every verse of the letter is accounted for below (see Full-Chapter Coverage Note at the end). This document extends, and must not contradict, the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json, and builds directly on 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md already produced for this curriculum.
2 John is a short, densely doctrinal, single-author pastoral letter. Its linguistic-gap profile differs from Romans in a structurally important way: Romans mostly required new descriptive compounds for abstract soteriological categories (justification, imputed righteousness); 2 John’s chief difficulty is instead fencing existing, semantically crowded Manipuri words away from adjacent Sanamahi and Vaishnava concepts that sit very close to them, because the letter’s four doctrines (truth/love, incarnation-denial, hospitality/discernment, perseverance) all trade in ordinary household- and community-register vocabulary (love, walking, house, greeting, joy, lady, elder) rather than exotic technical vocabulary. This makes 2 John’s risk profile more about collision than about absence.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
| Doctrine | Available Manipuri Term(s) | Weaknesses of Available Term(s) | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking in Truth and Love | অচুম্বা (truth); নুংশিবা (love); চৎপা (walk/conduct) | অচুম্বা is serviceable but sits near সত্য (Sanskrit-derived, tied to Vaishnava cosmological “Satya Yuga” order); নুংশিবা is safe only if কept apart from প্রেম (Ras Lila Krishna-Radha devotional love); চৎপা is a plain motion verb requiring metaphorical extension that could be misheard as literal/ritual procession | Reuse baseline-adjacent morphemes (অচুম্বা already embedded in বাসেলাইন’s অচুম্বা চৎনবিরাক); pair Truth+Love consistently as a fixed doctrinal dyad in every occurrence (1:1-6) so learners learn them jointly, not as free-standing generic virtue words; explicit translator note fencing অচুম্বা from সত্য and নুংশিবা from প্রেম at first occurrence |
| Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা (incarnation, REUSED baseline); অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই (deceiver, provisional); এণ্টিক্রিস্তো (transliterated antichrist) | Incarnation term is baseline-proven and adequate; “deceiver” is a novel compound with no attested precedent — risk is under- or over-specification of “deliberate doctrinal falsehood” vs. general dishonesty; “antichrist” transliteration risks zero recognition without gloss, but any indigenous paraphrase risks drifting toward Kalki-avatar expectation | Keep মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা exactly as baseline; retain এণ্টিক্রিস্তো as a transliteration WITH the descriptive gloss (ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা) attached at every occurrence, never standing alone; require theologian confirmation of অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই before locking, per baseline’s own caution pattern for provisional compounds |
| Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | য়ুমদা লৌবা (receive into house); খুরুমজরি (greeting formula); চেক্সিন্নবা (watch yourselves) | Meitei hospitality and greeting norms are strong, near-obligatory social customs; a flat literal rendering of “do not receive… do not greet” risks being read as a general license for rudeness/inhospitality rather than a narrow doctrinal-endorsement refusal | Frame both য়ুমদা লৌবা and খুরুমজরি explicitly, in accompanying teaching notes, as withholding formal doctrinal sponsorship of a traveling teacher’s ministry, not everyday courtesy; this doctrine requires the heaviest surrounding-context scaffolding of the four |
| Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা (teaching of Christ); লৈথিবা (abide/remain); হেন্না চৎপা (goes ahead/transgresses); তেংবাং মপু লৈতে (does not have God) | তম্বিবা risks resonance with an evolving guru-parampara instructional lineage; লৈথিবা risks resonance with a household deity/ancestral spirit “remaining” in a home shrine (a live Sanamahi household-religion category); হেন্না চৎপা must not collapse into generic “moving forward/progress,” which in a discipleship-teaching context could sound like a virtue rather than the doctrinal overreach it names | Fix তম্বিবা with the full compound ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা every time (never bare তম্বিবা); confirm লৈথিবা against attested “abide in me” passages in a printed Manipuri Bible before lock; keep তেংবাং মপু লৈতে fully unqualified, per baseline’s doctrinal-preservation rule against softening strong claims |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2 John’s translation difficulty is asymmetric: very little vocabulary is genuinely absent from Manipuri; almost everything needed already exists but sits inside a crowded semantic neighborhood shared with Sanamahism and/or Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Distinguishing these two categories drives different remediation strategies.
2a. Genuinely Missing Vocabulary (requires new descriptive compound)
| Concept | Gap | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Antichrist (as a named eschatological category, not just “an enemy”) | No existing Manipuri term for this specific NT category | Transliterate (এণ্টিক্রিস্তো) + fixed gloss (ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা), following the baseline’s own transliteration precedent for Christo/Jisu |
| Deceiver (as doctrinal deceiver specifically, distinct from a liar/con-artist) | No settled single word isolates “one who leads others into false teaching about Christ” from general dishonesty vocabulary | Provisional compound অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই, pending theologian confirmation |
| ”Teaching of Christ” as a fixed, closed body of apostolic doctrine (vs. an ongoing living instructional tradition) | No native single word distinguishes closed apostolic deposit from an open-ended teacher-lineage | Full compound ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা, never bare তম্বিবা |
| ”Full reward” (eschatological, distinct from earned merit) | No attested Manipuri Bible precedent found | Provisional compound থবকী মানুং, flagged for confirmation against a printed Manipuri Bible |
| Mercy as distinct from grace (paired but non-synonymous, 1:3) | No settled precedent distinguishing ἔλεος from χάρις in existing Manipuri Christian usage | Provisional term নিংবারী, flagged for theologian confirmation; must be taught as compassion-toward-suffering, not a restatement of grace |
2b. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (vocabulary exists, but needs fencing from a live competing concept)
| Manipuri Term | Concept Intended | Adjacent Concept It Must Be Fenced From | Tradition | Fencing Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| অচুম্বা | Truth (Christ-centered, propositional + relational) | সত্য (Satya Yuga cosmic-order truth) | Vaishnavism | Translator note at first occurrence (1:1); never substitute সত্য |
| নুংশিবা | Love (obedient, communal agapē) | প্রেম (Krishna-Radha romantic/devotional love, Ras Lila) | Vaishnavism | Reserve প্রেম explicitly for describing Vaishnava devotional love in any comparative teaching material; never use it for agapē |
| তৈবাং লৈবাক | World (present social-doctrinal sphere) | Sanamahi/Pakhangba creation-cosmology “world” | Sanamahism | Frame explicitly as present social reality, not origin-story cosmology |
| লৈথিবা | Abide/remain (settled relational continuity in doctrine) | A household deity or ancestral spirit “remaining” resident in a home shrine | Sanamahism | Context must always specify “in the teaching of Christ” / “in the Father and the Son” — never leave লৈথিবা unqualified |
| চেক্সিন্নবা | Watch yourselves (doctrinal vigilance) | Protective/apotropaic vigilance against spirit-harm (Umang Lai propitiation logic) | Sanamahism | Frame as vigilance against false teaching specifically, in immediate co-text |
| ইকায়খুম্লবা নুপী | ”Elect lady” (addressee, honorific or congregation-personification) | লেইমা / Leimarel Sidabi (major Sanamahi goddess) | Sanamahism | AVOID লেইমা entirely in this context; use only the descriptive honorific |
| নুংঙাইবা | Rejoice/joy (pastoral and eschatological joy, 1:4, 1:12) | হরাওবা (ordinary festive rejoicing; also the root of Lai Haraoba, the major Umang Lai festival) | Sanamahism | Reuse বাসেলাইন’s নুংঙাইবা (already fixed in “gospel”) consistently at both occurrences; never হরাওবা |
| খনবা | Elect/election (personal, applied to an individual, 1:1, 1:13) | Royal-divine-lineage selection (Pakhangba-descent claim of Meitei kingship) | Sanamahism (royal-cultic residue) | Teach explicitly as God’s gracious personal choosing of a believer, not hereditary/dynastic selection |
| খুরুমজরি | Withheld greeting (doctrinal refusal to bless/endorse) | Ordinary mandatory Meitei politeness norm, where withholding is read as a severe social insult | (General Meitei custom, not one tradition) | Frame explicitly as a doctrinal act, not an interpersonal slight, to prevent the passage being read as license for rudeness |
| য়ুমদা লৌবা | Receive into house (formal doctrinal endorsement) | General hospitality obligation (strong Meitei guest-honor custom) | (General Meitei custom, not one tradition) | Frame explicitly as withholding a specific ministry-sponsorship act, not blanket inhospitality |
| থবক | Work/labor (ministry labor, v.8; evil deeds, v.11) | সেবা (bhakti devotional service accruing merit toward divine favor) | Vaishnavism | Mark the neutral (v.8) vs. morally freighted (v.11) senses distinctly in context; never let either sense drift toward merit-accumulation logic |
| ফোংদোকপা | Confess (open doctrinal affirmation) | Maibi trance-utterance (oracular declaration during Lai Haraoba) | Sanamahism | Reuse baseline’s prophecy-root term; frame explicitly as propositional, verbal affirmation of settled doctrine, not oracular speech |
| কলিসিয়াগী অহল | Elder (recognized pastoral/apostolic authority, self-designation of the author) | Village/clan (yumnak) elder; Umang Lai ritual elder | Sanamahism / general clan structure | Full compound required; bare “elder” alone risks default reading as a clan or ritual-elder role |
Observation: every crowded-neighborhood item above involves a term that is already Christian-serviceable but requires a co-text anchor (a possessive phrase, a fixed compound, or an explicit translator note) to stay fenced. None of these are new-coinage problems; they are all discipline-of-consistent-collocation problems. This is the dominant linguistic-gap pattern for 2 John, distinct from Romans’ dominant pattern of needing wholly new descriptive compounds for abstract soteriological categories.
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Decision | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Antichrist | Transliterate (এণ্টিক্রিস্তো) + mandatory descriptive gloss (ক্রিস্তোগী য়েকপা) attached every occurrence | A pure paraphrase (“opponent of Christ,” “rival redeemer”) risks being independently assimilated into the live Vaishnava Kalki-avatar expectation (a final avatar of Vishnu awaited at the end of Kali Yuga to destroy evil and renew the world); transliteration signals a distinct, non-native category while the gloss supplies comprehension. This mirrors the baseline’s own precedent of transliterating Christo/Jisu/Israel rather than translating them descriptively. |
| Christ / Jesus / Messiah | Transliterate (ক্রিস্তো / জিসু), REUSED exactly from baseline | Already fixed; no decision required — consistency with Romans curriculum is mandatory per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rules. |
| Incarnation | Paraphrase (descriptive compound মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা), REUSED exactly from baseline | Already resolved in baseline specifically to avoid অবতার; no change needed, but 2 John is where this choice bears its heaviest doctrinal weight, since the letter’s entire warning turns on this single term. |
| ”Teaching of Christ” | Paraphrase (compound ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা), never transliterated | A transliterated loanword would carry no inherent fencing power against guru-parampara resonance; the possessive compound anchors the teaching specifically to Christ every time it appears. |
| Elect lady / addressee | Paraphrase (descriptive honorific ইকায়খুম্লবা নুপী), NOT লেইমা | Transliteration is not applicable (this is an English/Greek honorific, not a proper name in the strict sense); the paraphrase must specifically avoid the existing honorific লেইমা due to its Leimarel Sidabi goddess association. |
| Amen (if it occurs in liturgical use of this letter in worship contexts) | Transliterate, per baseline’s established regional-form convention for theological proper nouns | Consistent with baseline transliteration standards for Amen/Hallelujah. |
| Elder (self-designation) | Paraphrase (compound কলিসিয়াগী অহল), not a bare transliteration or bare native term | A transliteration (e.g., borrowing “presbyter”) would be unrecognizable to readers; a bare native word (অহল alone) collapses into clan/ritual-elder categories. The compound is required precisely because neither pure strategy alone works. |
General rule surfaced by this letter: transliteration is reserved for terms already fixed by prior Bible-translation convention (proper names, Christo/Jisu) or for terms whose only viable paraphrase would independently collide with a live competing eschatological/devotional category (Antichrist). Everywhere else, 2 John’s household-register vocabulary is best served by anchored descriptive compounds rather than either bare native words (too crowded) or loanwords (unrecognizable/opaque).
4. Ranked List of This Letter’s Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × likelihood of unintended religious-landscape collision), drawing on both live traditions per the baseline’s dual-tradition mandate.
-
Incarnation / “coming in the flesh” (1:7) — CRITICAL. The letter’s entire warning is built on this term; মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা must never drift toward অবতার given the prestigious, actively performed Ras Lila tradition’s celebration of Krishna’s repeated avatar-descents. Any softening here collapses the letter’s central doctrine.
-
Antichrist (1:7) — CRITICAL. Highest collision risk with a forward-looking, hoped-for figure (Kalki) rather than a rejected one, which inverts the passage’s warning valence entirely if left unglossed. Requires transliteration + mandatory gloss at every occurrence, with no exceptions.
-
“Does not have God” (1:9) — CRITICAL. Baseline doctrinal-preservation rules forbid softening strong claims; the temptation to hedge this into something like “is distant from God” must be resisted explicitly, since Meitei politeness norms elsewhere in the letter (greeting customs) create pressure toward softened, face-saving language that would be doctrinally fatal here.
-
Rejoice/Joy — নুংঙাইবা vs. হরাওবা (1:4, 1:12) — HIGH. Not a doctrine-content risk in the strict sense, but a very high recognition/festival-name collision risk: হরাওবা is the everyday word most naturally reached for by a translator or reviewer unfamiliar with the baseline’s existing নুংঙাইবা convention, and it is also the root of Lai Haraoba, the major currently-practiced Umang Lai festival. Consistency across both occurrences must be enforced mechanically (translation-memory lock), not left to translator judgment per-segment.
-
Truth (অচুম্বা) vs. সত্য (1:1-4) — HIGH. Because the letter opens with four dense verses stacking “truth” repeatedly, an inconsistent lapse into সত্য at any single occurrence would seed a cosmological (Satya Yuga) resonance that undermines the Christ-centered sense established elsewhere in the same paragraph.
-
Love (নুংশিবা) vs. প্রেম (1:1, 1:3, 1:5-6) — HIGH. Structurally identical risk to #5: a single inconsistent occurrence anywhere in the letter’s tight truth/love pairing risks importing Ras Lila devotional-romantic connotations into an obedience-defined ethical term.
-
“Abide/remain” — লৈথিবা (1:2, 1:9, tripled in v.9) — HIGH. The threefold repetition in verse 9 makes this the single most syntactically dense occurrence of any term in the letter; if লৈথিবা is even momentarily read through a household-deity-residing-in-a-shrine frame, the entire doctrinal argument of v.9 (having vs. not having the Father and Son) is compromised. Requires explicit confirmation against printed Manipuri Bible “abide in me” precedent before lock.
-
Hospitality refusal — য়ুমদা লৌবা and খুরুমজরি (1:10-11) — HIGH. Because Meitei hospitality and greeting customs are strong, near-obligatory social norms, there is real risk of the passage being either (a) read as generic license for rudeness, or (b) softened by a translator instinctively resistant to rendering it at full force, in either direction distorting the doctrine of discernment the passage teaches. Requires the heaviest surrounding teaching-note scaffolding of any passage in the letter.
-
Deceiver — অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই (1:7) — MEDIUM-HIGH. A provisional, unattested compound; risk is drift toward general “bad/dishonest person” vocabulary rather than the specific sense of “one who leads others into denial of Christ’s incarnation.” Requires theologian confirmation before lock, consistent with the baseline’s caution for novel compounds.
-
Mercy — নিংবারী (1:3) — MEDIUM. Lower doctrinal centrality than the items above, but flagged because, absent confirmation, learners may hear it as a mere synonym-restatement of grace rather than a distinct compassion-toward-suffering category; the risk is conceptual flattening rather than syncretism.
5. Recommendations Carried Forward to Phase 1 Step 9 (Doctrine Risk Registry Merge)
- Lock নুংঙাইবা, মীওইগী মহৈ লৌবা, তেংবাং মপু লৈতে, and ক্রিস্তোগী তম্বিবা into translation memory with no permitted per-segment deviation (Critical/High enforcement tier), given their ranking above.
- Require explicit theologian sign-off before locking: অরানবা তম্বিবা মীওই (deceiver), এণ্টিক্রিস্তো gloss wording, নিংবারী (mercy), থবকী মানুং (full reward), and লৈথিবা (pending printed-Bible confirmation).
- Every occurrence of খনবা, ইকায়খুম্লবা নুপী, and নুংঙাইবা must carry a standing translator note fencing them from লেইমা/Leimarel Sidabi, Pakhangba-lineage election, and Lai Haraoba respectively, until native speaker review confirms the fencing note can be reduced to a one-time footnote rather than a recurring flag.
- Hospitality passages (1:10-11) require accompanying pastoral/teaching-note material (outside the strict translation memory) clarifying the narrow doctrinal scope of the hospitality refusal, to prevent misapplication in contemporary Meitei church practice.
