Doctrine Analysis

11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 Corinthians (English → Mandarin)

Purpose

This document is the full doctrine matrix for 1 Corinthians 1–16, produced under PRD Phase 1 Steps 4–5. It is generated to be identical in doctrine set and risk tier to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; this file adds narrative rationale, translation-risk detail, and explicit full-book chapter coverage, while the JSON registry remains the machine-enforced routing authority for Phase 2. The core passage, 1 Corinthians 15:1–11, anchors the curriculum’s theological center of gravity (the Resurrection of Christ and Believers) but is never treated as the scope boundary — every chapter of the book is reviewed below.

Seventeen doctrines are tracked, matching the registry exactly: 8 Critical, 6 High, 2 Medium, 1 Low. All Mandarin doctrine names, key terms, and risk tiers below are drawn directly from the registry and from the reused Romans baseline terms in 08_core_glossary.md; no new tier assignments are introduced here.

Detailed Doctrine Entries

1. The Resurrection of Christ and Believers — Critical

Passages: 15:1-11 (core), 15:12-19, 15:20-28, 15:35-49, 15:50-58, 6:14. Translation risk: The entire chapter pivots on 复活 (fùhuó), inherited from the Romans baseline as the fixed, non-negotiable rendering. Three additional risk points are specific to 1 Corinthians 15: (a) 显现 (“appeared,” 15:5-8) must convey an objective, bodily appearance to named eyewitnesses, not a vision, dream, or ghost-sighting (显灵/见鬼); (b) 属灵的身体 (“spiritual body,” 15:44) must be a real transformed physical body, not a disembodied spirit or the Buddhist intermediate-state body (中阴身) between death and rebirth; (c) 末后的亚当 (“last Adam,” 15:45) requires Genesis background and must not be read through a serial-reincarnation lens. This doctrine is the theological anchor of the whole curriculum and every occurrence requires mandatory human theologian review. Review routing: Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence).

2. Christian Unity versus Factionalism — High

Passages: 1:10-17, 3:1-9, 3:18-23, 4:6-13, 6:1-8, 11:17-19, 16:15-20. Translation risk: 分党 (“division/schism,” 1:10-13) uses 党 (dǎng), which in contemporary Mandarin carries a strong political-party connotation (政党); this must be taught as sinful loyalty-faction rivalry within one body, not legitimate difference of opinion or party pluralism. 基督的身体 (“body of Christ”) must retain organic, Spirit-united interdependence, avoiding both a voluntary-club reading and a bureaucratic/clan-hierarchy reading familiar from Chinese institutional and lineage structures. Review routing: Human theologian.

3. The Cross as Wisdom and Power — Critical

Passages: 1:18-25, 1:26-31, 2:1-16, 3:19-20. Translation risk: 智慧 (zhìhuì, “wisdom”) is one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) and the central category of Chinese Buddhist soteriology (般若智慧, prajñā attained through cultivation). God’s wisdom revealed in the crucified Christ must be taught as received by faith, never as an achievement of moral or contemplative self-cultivation. 属血气的人 (“natural person,” 2:14) risks a Traditional Chinese Medicine/qigong reading of 血气 as bodily vital energy rather than unregenerate human nature apart from the Spirit. 愚拙 (“foolishness”) must preserve Paul’s deliberate paradox without endorsing genuine irrationality. Review routing: Human theologian.

4. Church Discipline and Holiness — Critical

Passages: 5:1-13, 6:9-11, 16:22. Translation risk: 逾越节的羔羊 (“Passover lamb,” 5:7) must be distinguished from ongoing Chinese folk/ancestral sacrificial practices (祭祀, 拜拜) that appease deities or ancestors on a recurring basis — Christ’s sacrifice is a unique, once-for-all fulfillment. 交给撒但 (“deliver to Satan,” 5:5) must be redemptive, restoration-oriented church discipline, not a magical curse or exorcism, avoiding collision with folk 下咒 curse-casting. 咒诅 (“accursed,” 16:22) requires the same distinction — a solemn covenantal pronouncement, not folk curse-casting. Review routing: Human theologian.

5. Marriage and Singleness — High

Passages: 7:1-9, 7:10-16, 7:25-40. Translation risk: Chinese cultural pressure toward marriage as filial/social duty (延续香火, “continuing the family line”) risks distorting Paul’s even-handed treatment of marriage and singleness as equally legitimate, Spirit-given callings. The personal-vocation 恩赐 (“gift,” 7:7) must be disambiguated from the corporate ministry-gifts sense (属灵恩赐, chs. 12/14) — same underlying Greek word, distinct referent. 节制 (“self-control”) must be distinguished from the Confucian self-cultivated-willpower ideal of 克己. Review routing: Human theologian.

6. Christian Liberty and Idol Meat — Critical

Passages: 8:1-13, 9:1-27, 10:1-13, 10:14-22, 10:23-11:1. Translation risk: This doctrine intersects most directly with living Chinese religious practice of any doctrine in the curriculum. 偶像/祭偶像之物 correspond to the real, ongoing redistribution of temple-festival and ancestor-rite food within extended families; 拜偶像 (“idolatry”) must be sharply distinguished from the permitted “eating” of ch. 8 — Paul’s dividing line is worship/ritual participation, not the food itself. 鬼 (“demon,” 10:20-21), inherited from CUV convention, ordinarily denotes a deceased human’s wandering spirit or ancestor ghost in Mandarin folk usage — an entirely different category from a fallen angelic being in rebellion against God — requiring sustained doctrinal distinction at every occurrence, not a one-time lexical fix. Review routing: Human theologian.

7. The Lord’s Supper — Critical

Passages: 11:17-34. Translation risk: 主的晚餐 must be sharply distinguished from ancestral memorial-meal offerings (祭祖, 扫墓祭拜) presented ritually to the deceased — this is a meal shared with the living, present Lord by the living congregation, proclaiming a completed, once-for-all sacrifice, not a recurring appeasement offering to the departed. 身体和血 must avoid a magical-transformation folk-talisman reading and any collision with blood-oath sworn-brotherhood bonding (结拜, the Peach Garden oath already flagged in the baseline fellowship entry). Review routing: Human theologian.

8. Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ — High

Passages: 12:1-11, 12:12-31, 14:1-25, 14:26-40. Translation risk: 方言 (“tongues”) presents a significant semantic-gap risk distinct from syncretism: in ordinary Mandarin it simply means “regional dialect” with no supernatural connotation, so readers may fail to recognize a spiritual gift is being described at all unless the term is consistently accompanied by clarifying context. 医病 (“healing”) must be distinguished from qigong or folk-energy healing practices (气/法力), per the baseline’s power-of-God caution. Review routing: Human theologian.

9. Love as the Greater Way — Critical

Passages: 12:31, 13:1-13. Translation risk: 爱 (agapē) must be distinguished from romantic love (爱情), mere affection (喜欢), the Confucian relational virtue 仁 (rén, a role-calibrated duty cultivated through moral effort), and Buddhist non-attachment compassion (慈悲). CUV’s deliberate choice of the unqualified, simple 爱 — rather than borrowing 仁 or 慈悲 — is doctrinally significant and must be preserved with the strongest possible clarifying teaching note, since this chapter is the doctrinal and pastoral heart of the whole curriculum. Review routing: Human theologian.

10. Order in Worship — Critical

Passages: 11:2-16, 14:26-40. Translation risk: 头 (“head,” 11:3) directly collides with the Confucian Three Bonds (三纲, especially 夫为妻纲, “the husband is the guide/head of the wife”) — a hierarchical, duty-bound patriarchal framework already embedded in Chinese social ethics. Mandarin 头 risks either uncritically endorsing this pre-existing hierarchy or, if over-corrected, erasing the relational-order language Paul actually uses. This requires the most careful theological framing of any term in the curriculum. Review routing: Human theologian.

11. The Body as Temple of the Holy Spirit — Critical

Passages: 3:16-17, 6:15-20. Translation risk: 神的殿 extends the baseline’s church-vs-temple caution (never 庙/寺/道观); the sanctuary metaphor for both the corporate church (ch. 3) and the individual believer’s body (ch. 6) must affirm God’s indwelling presence without importing folk-temple associations of a geomantically auspicious site, an idol-housing structure, or a place requiring ritual offerings to appease a resident deity. 重价买来 must be framed within grace, not as a cold commercial transaction, and must not be conflated with folk soul-redemption rituals performed for the dead or for fortune. Review routing: Human theologian.

12. Apostolic Tradition and Eyewitness Testimony — High

Passages: 11:2, 11:23, 15:1-3, 15:11. Translation risk: 传给/领受 (“delivered/received”) must convey a fixed, authoritative apostolic deposit transmitted with eyewitness authority, not a personally-formed opinion or one lineage-teaching among several. This risks assimilation to the Confucian master-disciple transmission model (师承, 经典的传授), which would reduce the gospel to one wisdom-teaching lineage among many rather than a unique, historically-anchored, once-delivered apostolic report. Consistency with 15:3’s “for” (为/替) and “according to the Scriptures” (照圣经所说) must be maintained. Review routing: Human theologian.

13. Apostolic Ministry and Stewardship — Medium

Passages: 4:1-2, 4:9-13, 9:1-18, 9:24-27. Translation risk: 管家 (“steward”) and 执事 (“servant”) must retain a sense of entrusted accountability to God rather than to human patrons or factions, echoing but not collapsing into the pre-existing Chinese household-steward concept. 冠冕 (“crown/wreath,” 9:25) must not be conflated with a royal/imperial crown of political rule (王冠); it denotes an athlete’s victory-wreath, a reward for disciplined service, not sovereign authority. Review routing: Native speaker review.

14. Baptism and Union with Christ — High

Passages: 1:13-17, 10:1-2, 12:12-13. Translation risk: 洗礼 must be distinguished from ritual purification bathing in Daoist/Buddhist/folk practice (净身, spirit-cleansing washing performed by a ritual specialist); Christian baptism signifies Spirit-wrought union with Christ and incorporation into his one body, not a magical or self-performed purification technique. Review routing: Human theologian.

15. Christian Hope in the Resurrection — Medium

Passages: 13:13, 15:19, 15:32, 15:54-57, 16:22. Translation risk: 盼望 must be distinguished from generic wishful hoping or fortune-seeking hope for good luck, a folk-fortune association already flagged for 福 in the baseline gospel entry. Christian hope is confident expectation grounded in the secured future event of bodily resurrection and Christ’s promised return (马拉纳他, 16:22), not an uncertain wish. Review routing: Native speaker review.

16. Grace-Motivated Giving — High

Passages: 16:1-4. Translation risk: 捐项 must be distinguished from the Buddhist/folk-temple practice of donating for merit (功德箱, “merit box” donations believed to accrue merit or favor toward the giver or their family) — this collection is a grace-motivated act of love and church-to-church solidarity, not a merit-generating religious transaction, directly parallel to the grace-versus-merit caution already established for 恩典 in the baseline. Review routing: Human theologian.

17. Christian Fellowship and Greetings — Low

Passages: 16:19-21. Translation risk: 圣洁的亲嘴 (“holy kiss”) presents primarily a cultural-strangeness risk (kissing as a greeting is atypical in contemporary Chinese social custom) rather than a doctrinal collision; a brief cultural-background note is sufficient without altering the established term. Review routing: Automated review.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Resurrection of Christ and Believers

Mandarin name: 基督与信徒的复活
Key terms: 复活, 显现, 属灵的身体, 末后的亚当, 埋葬, 睡了
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 复活 must never be rendered with 轮回 (reincarnation cycle), 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb), or 还魂 (folk ghost-story reanimation), per the baseline resurrection rule. 显现 (appeared, 15:5-8) risks being read as a vision, apparition, or ghost-sighting (显灵/见鬼) rather than an objective bodily appearance to eyewitnesses. 属灵的身体 (15:44) must be distinguished from a disembodied spirit or the Buddhist intermediate-state body (中阴身) between death and rebirth — Paul insists on a real, transformed, physical body, not an escape from the body into pure spirit. This is the theological anchor doctrine of the entire curriculum.

The Cross as Wisdom and Power

Mandarin name: 十字架的智慧与能力
Key terms: 智慧, 愚拙, 十字架, 奥秘, 属灵的人, 属血气的人, 神的大能
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 智慧 (wisdom) is one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) and the central category in Chinese Buddhist soteriology (般若智慧, prajñā attained through cultivation); God’s wisdom revealed in the crucified Christ must be taught as received by faith, never as an achievement of moral or contemplative cultivation. 属血气的人 (natural person, 2:14) risks a Traditional Chinese Medicine/qigong reading of 血气 as bodily vital energy rather than unregenerate human nature apart from the Spirit.

Church Discipline and Holiness

Mandarin name: 教会的纪律与圣洁
Key terms: 淫乱, 逾越节的羔羊, 交给撒但, 咒诅
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 逾越节的羔羊 (Passover lamb, 5:7) must be distinguished from ongoing Chinese folk/ancestral sacrificial-offering practices (祭祀, 拜拜) intended to appease deities or ancestors on a recurring basis — Christ’s sacrifice is a unique, once-for-all fulfillment, not a repeatable ritual. 交给撒但 (deliver to Satan, 5:5) must be taught as redemptive, restoration-oriented discipline, not a magical curse or exorcism, avoiding collision with folk 下咒 curse-casting. 咒诅 (accursed, 16:22) must likewise be distinguished from folk curse-casting rituals.

Christian Liberty and Idol Meat

Mandarin name: 基督徒的自由与祭偶像之物
Key terms: 偶像, 祭偶像之物, 良心, 拜偶像, 鬼, 主的桌子, 鬼的筵席
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this doctrine intersects most directly and practically with living Chinese religious practice of any doctrine in the curriculum. 偶像 and 祭偶像之物 correspond to the real, ongoing redistribution of temple-festival and ancestor-rite food within extended families; 拜偶像 must be sharply distinguished from the permitted ‘eating’ of ch.8 — Paul’s line is worship/ritual participation, not the food itself. 鬼 (demon, 10:20-21), inherited from CUV convention, ordinarily denotes a deceased human’s wandering or ancestor ghost in Mandarin folk usage — an entirely different category from a fallen angelic being in rebellion against God; every occurrence requires sustained doctrinal distinction to avoid trivializing demons as unhappy ancestors or, worse, casting ancestors as demonic.

The Lord’s Supper

Mandarin name: 主的晚餐
Key terms: 主的晚餐, 身体和血, 不按理, 约
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 主的晚餐 must be sharply distinguished from ancestral memorial-meal offerings (祭祖, 扫墓祭拜) presented ritually to the deceased — this is a meal shared with the living, present Lord by the living congregation, proclaiming a completed, once-for-all sacrifice, not a recurring appeasement offering to the departed. 身体和血 must avoid both a magical-transformation folk-talisman reading and any collision with blood-oath sworn-brotherhood bonding (结拜, the Peach Garden oath already flagged in the baseline fellowship entry).

Love as the Greater Way

Mandarin name: 爱是最大的路
Key terms: 爱, 盼望, 信心
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 爱 (agapē) must be distinguished from romantic love (爱情), mere affection (喜欢), the Confucian relational virtue 仁 (rén, a role-calibrated duty cultivated through moral effort), and Buddhist non-attachment compassion (慈悲).

Order in Worship

Mandarin name: 敬拜中的次序
Key terms: 头, 次序, 方言, 预言
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 头 (head, 11:3) directly collides with the Confucian Three Bonds (三纲, especially 夫为妻纲, ‘the husband is the guide/head of the wife’) — a hierarchical, duty-bound patriarchal framework already embedded in Chinese social ethics. Mandarin 头 risks either uncritically endorsing this pre-existing hierarchy or, if over-corrected, erasing the relational-order language Paul actually uses; this requires the most careful theological framing in the entire chapter and mandatory human theologian review for any teaching material addressing 11:2-16.

The Body as Temple of the Holy Spirit

Mandarin name: 身体是圣灵的殿
Key terms: 神的殿, 身体, 重价买来
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 神的殿 extends the baseline’s church-vs-temple caution (never 庙/寺/道观); the sanctuary metaphor for both the corporate church (ch.3) and the individual believer’s body (ch.6) must affirm God’s indwelling presence without importing folk-temple associations of a geomantically auspicious site, an idol-housing structure, or a place requiring ritual offerings to appease a resident deity. 重价买来 must be framed within grace, not as a cold commercial transaction, and must not be conflated with folk soul-redemption rituals performed for the dead or for fortune.

High Risk Doctrines

Christian Unity versus Factionalism

Mandarin name: 基督徒的合一与结党之争
Key terms: 分党, 基督的身体, 肢体
Review routing: Human theologian

分党 (division/schism, 1:10-13) uses 党, which carries a strong modern political-party connotation (as in 政党); must be taught as sinful loyalty-faction rivalry within one body, never softened into legitimate difference of opinion. Lawsuits among believers (6:1-8) and the greetings of ch.16 both extend the unity theme; 基督的身体 (body of Christ) must convey organic Spirit-united interdependence, not a voluntary social organization or a hierarchical clan/bureaucratic structure familiar from Chinese institutional life.

Marriage and Singleness

Mandarin name: 婚姻与独身
Key terms: 婚姻, 童身, 恩赐, 节制
Review routing: Human theologian

Chinese cultural pressure toward marriage as a filial/social duty (延续香火, continuing the family line) risks distorting Paul’s even-handed treatment of marriage and singleness as equally legitimate, Spirit-given callings. The personal-vocation 恩赐 (gift, 7:7) must be disambiguated from the corporate ministry gifts of chapters 12/14 (属灵恩赐), since both use the same underlying Greek word but denote different things. 节制 (self-control) must be distinguished from the Confucian self-cultivated-willpower ideal of 克己.

Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ

Mandarin name: 属灵恩赐与基督的身体
Key terms: 属灵恩赐, 方言, 翻译, 肢体, 基督的身体, 医病
Review routing: Human theologian

方言 (tongues) creates a significant semantic-gap risk distinct from syncretism: in ordinary Mandarin it simply means ‘regional dialect’ with no supernatural connotation, so readers may fail to recognize a spiritual gift is being described at all unless the term is consistently accompanied by clarifying context. 医病 (healing) must be distinguished from qigong or folk-energy healing practices (气/法力), per the baseline’s power-of-God caution.

Apostolic Tradition and Eyewitness Testimony

Mandarin name: 使徒所传与见证的传统
Key terms: 传给, 领受, 传统, 照圣经所说
Review routing: Human theologian

传给/领受 (delivered/received) must convey a fixed, authoritative apostolic deposit transmitted with eyewitness authority, not a personally-formed opinion or one lineage-teaching among several — this risks assimilation to the Confucian master-disciple transmission model (师承, 经典的传授), which would reduce the gospel to one wisdom-teaching lineage among many rather than a unique, historically-anchored, once-delivered apostolic report.

Baptism and Union with Christ

Mandarin name: 洗礼与与基督联合
Key terms: 洗礼, 基督的身体
Review routing: Human theologian

洗礼 must be distinguished from ritual purification bathing in Daoist/Buddhist/folk practice (净身, spirit-cleansing washing performed by a ritual specialist); Christian baptism signifies Spirit-wrought union with Christ and incorporation into his one body, not a magical or self-performed purification technique.

Grace-Motivated Giving

Mandarin name: 出于恩典的捐献
Key terms: 捐项, 恩典
Review routing: Human theologian

捐项 must be distinguished from the Buddhist/folk-temple practice of donating for merit (功德箱, ‘merit box’ donations believed to accrue merit or favor toward the giver or their family) — this collection is a grace-motivated act of love and church-to-church solidarity, not a merit-generating religious transaction, directly parallel to the grace-versus-merit caution already established for 恩典 in the baseline.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Apostolic Ministry and Stewardship

Mandarin name: 使徒的事工与管家职分
Key terms: 执事, 管家, 权柄, 冠冕
Review routing: Native speaker review

管家 (steward) and 执事 (servant) must retain a sense of entrusted accountability to God rather than to human patrons or factions, echoing but not collapsing into the pre-existing Chinese household-steward concept. 冠冕 (crown/wreath, 9:25) must not be conflated with a royal/imperial crown of political rule (王冠); it denotes an athlete’s victory-wreath, a reward for disciplined service, not sovereign authority.

Christian Hope in the Resurrection

Mandarin name: 在复活中的盼望
Key terms: 盼望, 马拉纳他, 得胜
Review routing: Native speaker review

盼望 must be distinguished from generic wishful hoping or fortune-seeking hope for good luck, a folk-fortune association already flagged for 福 in the baseline gospel entry; Christian hope is confident expectation grounded in the secured future event of bodily resurrection and Christ’s promised return (马拉纳他, 16:22), not an uncertain wish.

Low Risk Doctrines

Christian Fellowship and Greetings

Mandarin name: 基督徒的团契与问安
Key terms: 圣洁的亲嘴, 团契
Review routing: Automated review

圣洁的亲嘴 (holy kiss) presents primarily a cultural-strangeness risk (kissing as a greeting is atypical in contemporary Chinese social custom) rather than a doctrinal collision; a brief cultural-background note is sufficient without altering the established term.
