Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Colossians (English–Mandarin)
This glossary covers every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from all four chapters of Colossians. Terms already fixed in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json are marked [REUSED] and must be rendered exactly as recorded there — no re-derivation, no alternative spellings. Terms new to the Colossians curriculum are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, pending theologian sign-off on Critical/High items per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions (Critical / High / Medium / Low).

B. New Critical-Risk Terms (Colossians)
| English | Greek | Transliteration | Mandarin | Pinyin | Doctrine | Primary passages | Alternatives rejected | Risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image (of God) | εἰκών | eikōn | 形像 | xíngxiàng | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 3:10 | 神像 (idol statue) | 像 shares its root with 神像/佛像 (idol/Buddha statues in temple worship). Must always be taught as the living, personal manifestation of God’s being, never an object of veneration crafted by hands. |
| Firstborn (of creation / from the dead) | πρωτότοκος | prōtotokos | 首生者 / 首生的 | shǒushēng zhě/de | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 1:18 | (a birth-order-only gloss with no rank sense) | Must never be taught as “the first created being” (an Arian reading denying eternal deity). Requires the rank/preeminence sense (cf. LXX Ps 89:27), confirmed by the surrounding verses (“before all things,” “all things created through him”). |
| Fullness (of God / of Deity) | πλήρωμα | plērōma | 丰盛 | fēngshèng | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19, 2:9, 2:10 | (a diffuse “pervading essence” gloss) | Must never be taught as pantheistic immanence (道/气 pervading all things, Buddhist buddha-nature latent in all beings). The entire fullness of deity resides exclusively and personally in Christ. |
| Deity / Godhead | θεότης | theotēs | 神性 | shénxìng | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 2:9 | (an attainable-divinity gloss) | Christ possesses full deity essentially and eternally, not as a quality attained through spiritual cultivation (cf. Daoist immortal-attainment 得道, Buddhist buddha-nature cultivated toward realization). |
| Reconcile | ἀποκαταλλάσσω | apokatallassō | 和好 | héhǎo | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20, 1:22 | (a mutual-negotiation gloss) | God’s decisive, unilateral restoration of a hostile relationship through the cross — not a negotiated settlement between equal parties, not achieved through ritual/merit. |
| Redemption | ἀπολύτρωσις | apolytrōsis | 救赎 | jiùshú | Reconciliation through the Cross / Salvation | 1:14 | (a debt-repayment-by-the-sinner gloss) | Distinguish from the folk-religious transactional logic of 还愿 (repaying a vow/debt to a deity). God pays the price himself, on the sinner’s behalf. |
| Union with Christ (buried/raised with him) | συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω | synthaptō / synegeirō | 一同埋葬 / 一同复活 | yītóng máizàng / yītóng fùhuó | Union with Christ | 2:12, 3:1, 3:3 | 轮回 (reincarnation), 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb) | Reuses baseline’s Critical resurrection safeguard in a new, extended sense (the believer’s identification with Christ’s death/resurrection). Never a rebirth-cycle reading. |
| Philosophy (false teaching) | φιλοσοφία | philosophia | 哲学 (recommended) vs. 理学 (CUV precedent) | zhéxué / lǐxué | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | 理学 flagged as a collision risk, not outright forbidden | 理学 is the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian “School of Principle.” Requires an explicit theologian decision on which rendering to standardize before Phase 2. |
| Elemental spirits / elementary principles | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | stoicheia tou kosmou | 世上的小学 (elementary-teaching reading) OR 世界的权势/灵 (spirit-power reading) | shì shàng de xiǎoxué / shìjiè de quánshì | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8, 2:20 | — | Genuine, unresolved Greek-text ambiguity between two substantially different readings. Mandatory theologian decision required before translation; do not default silently to one reading. |
| Suffering / afflictions (“filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions”) | πάθημα / θλῖψις | pathēma / thlipsis | 患难 / 苦难 (+ compound 补满基督患难的缺欠) | huànnán / kùnàn | Sufficiency of Christ (guardrail) | 1:24 | (any merit-transfer / vicarious-merit gloss) | Must never imply Christ’s atonement was insufficient. Flag explicit risk of collision with the Buddhist bodhisattva vicarious-merit-suffering concept. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Word of Christ (indwelling) | λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ | logos tou Christou | 基督的道 | Jīdū de dào | Union with Christ / Scripture | 3:16 | (an impersonal-principle gloss) | Second occurrence (beyond 道成肉身) of the 道/Daoist-Way collision already flagged in the baseline. Requires the same clarifying note every time. |
C. New High-Risk Terms (Colossians)
| English | Greek | Transliteration | Mandarin | Pinyin | Doctrine | Primary passages | Risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creation / created | κτίσις / κτίζω | ktisis / ktizō | 创造 (v.) / 被造的 (creature) / 万有 (collective) | chuàngzào / bèi zào de / wànyǒu | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 1:16, 1:23 | Distinguish from 造化 (Daoist impersonal cosmic self-generation, Daodejing 42). Personal, deliberate creative act of Christ. |
| Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities | θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι | thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai | 有位的、主治的、执政的、掌权的 | yǒuwèi de, zhǔzhì de, zhízhèng de, zhǎngquán de | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | Collision with Chinese folk-religious celestial/underworld bureaucracy (城隍, 土地公, 阎王, 玉皇大帝’s court). All such powers are Christ’s creatures, subject to him, never a parallel bureaucracy requiring separate appeasement. |
| Sustains / holds together | συνίστημι | synistēmi | 而立 / 维系 | ér lì / wéixì | Supremacy of Christ over Creation (Providence extended) | 1:17 | Distinguish from Neo-Confucian 理 (organizing principle) and Daoist 道 as an impersonal sustaining ground. Christ’s personal, continuous sustaining action. |
| Domain / authority of darkness | ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους | exousia tou skotous | 黑暗的权势 | hēi’àn de quánshì | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:13 | Same lexeme (ἐξουσία) as the positive “authorities” sense at 1:16 — track sense per occurrence. |
| Mystery | μυστήριον | mystērion | 奥秘 | àomì | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:26–27, 2:2, 4:3 | Distinguish from 秘传 (Daoist esoteric lineage-transmission) and 天机 (diviner’s hidden cosmic secret). God’s mystery is openly revealed to all believers, not secretly transmitted to an elite. |
| Tradition of men | παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων | paradosis tōn anthrōpōn | 人的传统 (recommended) / 人间的遗传 (CUV) | rén de chuántǒng / rénjiān de yíchuán | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | 遗传 has drifted toward “genetic heredity” in modern Mandarin; flag for modern-register update. |
| Record of debt / bond | χειρόγραφον | cheirographon | 字据 | zìjù | Grace / Reconciliation through the Cross | 2:14 | Contrastive bridge to, and risk of collision with, 功过簿 (the folk-religious merit/demerit ledger). Debt is fully cancelled, not gradually offset by merit. |
| Worship of angels | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | 敬拜天使 | jìngbài tiānshǐ | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:18 | 敬拜 is also used for worship of God. Direct parallel to Chinese folk veneration of intermediary spirits/deities (土地公, 城隍). Load-bearing warning for this cultural context. |
| Self-made religion / self-imposed piety | ἐθελοθρησκία | ethelothrēskia | 私意崇拜 | sīyì chóngbài | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism / Grace | 2:23 | Parallels Buddhist/Daoist ascetic self-mortification (苦行) undertaken for merit/spiritual advancement. Paul’s verdict: “of no value.” Extends Critical grace-vs-merit doctrine. |
| Hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | 盼望 | pànwàng | Union with Christ / Fullness of Deity (indwelling hope of glory) | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | Distinguish from generic 希望 (uncertain-outcome wish) and folk fortune-seeking language (cf. baseline’s 福 caution). Confident certainty grounded in Christ’s promise. |
| Wisdom | σοφία | sophia | 智慧 | zhìhuì | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23, 3:16, 4:5 | Distinguish from Confucian 智 (cultivated ethical prudence, one of the Five Constant Virtues) and Buddhist 般若/prajñā (meditatively attained insight into emptiness). Christ-centered, revealed knowledge of God’s will. |
| Old self / New self | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος / καινός ἄνθρωπος | palaios/kainos anthrōpos | 旧人 / 新人 | jiù rén / xīn rén | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:9–10 | Renewal “after the image” deliberately echoes 1:15’s 形像 — must use the identical Mandarin term for both to preserve the intertextual link. Not gradual Confucian self-cultivation (修身). |
| Submit (household code) | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | 顺服 | shùnfú | Household Codes | 3:18 | Same root as baseline’s “obedience of faith” (因信而生的顺服). Must always be anchored to its qualifier “as is fitting in the Lord,” never a bare social-hierarchy command. |
| Inheritance | κληρονομία | klēronomia | 基业 | jīyè | Household Codes / Adoption | 3:24 | Distinct from ordinary secular 遗产. Connects directly to baseline’s Adoption doctrine (full inheritance-rights sonship), pointedly extended to bondservants with no legal inheritance rights in Roman society. |
D. New Medium-Risk Terms (Colossians)
| English | Greek | Transliteration | Mandarin | Pinyin | Doctrine | Primary passages | Risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peace (made through the cross — cosmic sense) | εἰρήνη / εἰρηνοποιέω | eirēnē / eirēnopoieō | 和平 | hépíng | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20 | Distinct Mandarin word from baseline’s 平安 (personal peace with God, reused at 3:15). Do not use interchangeably; both must avoid the folk-amulet “safety/fortune” reading. |
| Head | κεφαλή | kephalē | 头 | tóu | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 | Source-of-life/authority metaphor for organic union, not a bureaucratic chain-of-command title nor a literal anatomical claim. |
| Body (of Christ, the church) | σῶμα | sōma | 身体 | shēntǐ | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 1:24, 2:19 | Distinguish from σῶμα’s second sense (“substance/reality,” 2:17), which uses a different Mandarin term (see below). |
| Body (“substance/reality,” contrasted with “shadow”) | σῶμα | sōma | 形体 / 实体 | xíngtǐ / shítǐ | Warning against False Teaching (ceremonial law as shadow) | 2:17 | Same Greek word, different sense and different required Mandarin rendering from the “church as body” sense above — do not conflate. |
| Blood (of the cross) | αἷμα | haima | 血 | xuè | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20 | Cautious bridge to 歃血为盟 (blood-oath covenant custom) — correct toward substitutionary atonement, not a mutual bonding pact. |
| Baptism | βάπτισμα | baptisma | 洗礼 | xǐlǐ | Union with Christ | 2:12 | Distinguish from ritual-purification washing (净身) in Buddhist/Daoist practice; symbolizes union with Christ’s death/resurrection, not mechanical ritual cleansing. |
| Circumcision | περιτομή | peritomē | 割礼 | gēlǐ | Union with Christ (background) | 2:11 | Low collision risk; catechetical note needed that this is a completed spiritual reality in Christ, not an ongoing physical obligation. |
| Humility (dual sense: false vs. true) | ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosynē | 谦卑 | qiānbēi | Warning against False Teaching / Putting On the New Self | 2:18, 2:23 (false); 3:12 (true) | Same Mandarin word for two opposite theological evaluations within the same letter — mandatory per-occurrence translator note. |
| Patience / endurance | μακροθυμία / ὑπομονή | makrothymia / hypomonē | 忍耐 | rěnnài | Putting On the New Self | 1:11, 3:12 | Distinguish from Buddhist 忍辱 (pāramitā, self-cultivated merit-generating virtue). Spirit-given fruit, not self-effort. |
| Love / bond of perfection | ἀγάπη / σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος | agapē / syndesmos tēs teleiotētos | 爱心 / 联络全德的 | àixīn / liánluò quán dé de | Putting On the New Self | 3:14 | 全德 (“complete virtue”) risks a Confucian virtue-completion reading; clarify as Spirit-given, Christ-grounded love, not cultivated relational duty. |
| Psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί | psalmoi, hymnoi, ōdai pneumatikai | 诗章、颂词、灵歌 | shīzhāng, sòngcí, línggē | Union with Christ (corporate worship) | 3:16 | 灵歌 (“spirit songs”) risks the same bare-灵 ambiguity forbidden for Holy Spirit in the baseline (cf. 灵媒, spirit medium). Recommend an explicit Spirit-inspired qualifier. |
| Obey (household code) | ὑπακούω | hypakouō | 听从 / 顺从 | tīngcóng / shùncóng | Household Codes | 3:20, 3:22 | Distinguish from 孝顺 (Confucian filial piety owed to parents/ancestors); grounded in pleasing the Lord, not an independent filial-duty ethic. |
| Bondservants / slaves | δοῦλοι | douloi | 奴仆 | núpú | Household Codes | 3:22, 4:1 | Cultural/historical background note required (distinct from both modern chattel slavery and historical Chinese 奴婢 bonded-servant practice). |
| Masters (human, contrasted with the divine Lord) | κύριος (human sense) | kyrios | 主人 | zhǔrén | Household Codes | 3:22, 4:1 | Mandarin naturally distinguishes 主人 (human master) from 主 (divine Lord) — doctrinally correct, but Paul’s Greek wordplay (same word for both) is lost; compensate with explicit clause/footnote in Phase 2. |
| Minister / servant | διάκονος | diakonos | 执事 | zhíshì | Christian Fellowship / Ministry | 1:7, 1:23, 1:25, 4:7 | Can also denote a general temple functionary in ordinary usage; ensure the specifically Christian gospel-ministry sense is clear. |
| Prayer (general) | προσευχή | proseuchē | 祷告 | dǎogào | Prayer | 4:2 | Broader general term; distinguish from baseline’s narrower 代求 (intercession specifically on behalf of others). |
| Philosophy — see Critical table above | — | — | — | — | — | — | (Listed under Critical due to the 理学 collision; cross-referenced here for completeness.) |
E. New Low-Risk Terms (Colossians)
| English | Greek | Transliteration | Mandarin | Pinyin | Primary passages | Risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cross | σταυρός | stauros | 十字架 | shízìjià | 1:20, 2:14 | Established, distinctively Christian term; no competing Chinese religious referent. |
| Preeminence | πρωτεύων | prōteuōn | 居首位 | jū shǒuwèi | 1:18 | Straightforward rank term. |
| Bearing fruit | καρποφορέω | karpophoreō | 结果子 | jié guǒzi | 1:6, 1:10 | Natural agricultural metaphor, works equivalently in Chinese. |
| Open door (for the word) | θύρα τοῦ λόγου | thyra tou logou | 传道的门 | chuándào de mén | 4:3 | Standard missions metaphor. |
| Gracious speech (“seasoned with salt”) | χάρις (ethical sense, NOT the soteriological term) | charis (ethical sense) | 和气 | héqi | 4:6 | Exception note: this occurrence of χάρις is the ordinary ethical sense (“gracious/tactful speech”), not the Critical-tier salvation term. Do not mechanically force 恩典 here; 和气 is correct and doctrinally safe. |
| Fellow servant | σύνδουλος | syndoulos | 一同作仆人的 | yītóng zuò púrén de | 1:7, 4:7 | Straightforward compound. |
| Fellow worker | συνεργός | synergos | 同工 | tónggōng | 4:11 | Standard, well-established term. |
| Proper names (Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus, etc.) | — | — | 推基古、阿尼西母、亚里达古、马可、犹士都、以巴弗、路加、底马、宁法、亚基布, etc. | — | 4:7–17 | Use established CUV transliteration forms consistently; no doctrinal risk. |
F. Chapter Coverage Confirmation
| Chapter | New vocabulary introduced | Reused baseline terms present |

No chapter of Colossians is without load-bearing theological vocabulary; all four chapters are represented above with full-field term entries.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: 神
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Pervasive throughout Colossians 1:1-4:18. Monotheism must remain explicit in all Colossians doctrinal contexts, especially where Christ’s own deity (2:9) is at stake.
Jesus
Approved rendering: 耶稣
Transliteration: Yēsū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:1, 1:3, etc.
Messiah
Approved rendering: 基督
Transliteration: Jīdū
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: 弥勒, 救世主式泛称
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER conflate with 弥勒 (Maitreya). Pervasive throughout Colossians; the letter’s Christological argument (1:15-20, 2:9) depends on this term denoting the one, unique, already-come Messiah in whom all deity dwells.
Lord
Approved rendering: 主
Transliteration: zhǔ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 主人, 老爷
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:3, 3:17-4:1. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: in the household code (3:18-4:1) the same Greek word κύριος is also used for human masters; Mandarin correctly distinguishes 主 (Christ) from 主人 (human master, see masters_human entry below), but this loses Paul’s deliberate wordplay. Compensate in Phase 2 with an explicit clause/footnote, never by weakening 主.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: 圣灵
Transliteration: Shènglíng
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 祖灵, 灵
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER 灵 alone. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: relevant to 3:16’s ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί (‘spiritual songs’) — see new term spiritual_songs below; 灵 must never stand unqualified even inside that compound.
Grace
Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged for the soteriological sense (Col 1:2, 1:6, 3:16, 4:18). COLOSSIANS EXCEPTION (documented, not a contradiction): Col 4:6’s ordinary ethical sense of χάρις (‘gracious/tactful speech’) is correctly rendered 和气, NOT 恩典 — see new term gracious_speech below. Do not mechanically force 恩典 onto every occurrence of the Greek word.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: 复活
Transliteration: fùhuó
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 轮回, 投胎, 还魂
Original: ἀνάστασις / συνεγείρω
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged, for Christ’s own historical resurrection (Col 1:18). COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: the believer’s own identification with that resurrection uses a distinct compound, 一同复活 — see new term union_with_christ below. The forbidden-substitution list (NEVER 轮回/投胎/还魂) applies with full force to both the base term and the compound.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: 形像
Transliteration: xíngxiàng
Doctrine: Image of God in Christ
Rejected alternatives: 神像, 佛像
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:15, 3:10. 像 shares its root with 神像/佛像, the standard Chinese words for a temple idol or Buddha statue bowed to in worship. Every occurrence requires a clarifying note that Christ as God’s 形像 is the living, personal self-disclosure of God’s own being, never a crafted cult object. Must recur IDENTICALLY at 3:10 (believer renewed ‘after the image’) to preserve Paul’s deliberate intertextual link between Christology and anthropology. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: 首生者
Transliteration: shǒushēng zhě
Doctrine: Firstborn of All Creation / Firstborn from the Dead
Rejected alternatives: a birth-order-only gloss with no rank sense
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:15, 1:18. Must NEVER be taught with the plain birth-order sense (‘the first being God created’) — an Arian reading denying Christ’s eternal, uncreated deity. Requires the rank/preeminence sense (cf. LXX Psalm 89:27, of David), confirmed by ‘before all things’ (1:17) and ‘all things created through him’ (1:16). Both occurrences (1:15, 1:18) must use the identical Mandarin term to preserve Paul’s intentional inclusio. Mandatory human theologian review; flag for extra caution in any lesson isolating 1:15 as a stand-alone memory verse.
Fullness
Approved rendering: 丰盛
Transliteration: fēngshèng
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: a diffuse ‘pervading essence’ gloss
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:19, 2:9, 2:10. The single highest-stakes term in the letter for this doctrine. Must never be taught as pantheistic immanence (道/气 pervading all things, Buddhist buddha-nature 佛性 latent in all beings). The entire fullness of deity resides personally and exclusively in Christ alone, not distributed among intermediary powers or attainable by others through cultivation. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence; no automated or native-speaker-only approval permitted.
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: 神性
Transliteration: shénxìng
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: an attainable-divinity gloss
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 2:9, ‘in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.’ Christ possesses full deity essentially and eternally, not as a quality attained through spiritual cultivation. Guard against collision with Daoist immortal-attainment (得道) or Buddhist buddha-nature realized through practice. Mandatory human theologian review.
Reconcile
Approved rendering: 和好
Transliteration: héhǎo
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: a mutual-negotiation gloss
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:20, 1:22. Must retain the sense of a decisive, once-for-all, unilateral, God-initiated restoration — not a mutual negotiated settlement between equal parties, and not a state achieved gradually through human ritual or merit-accumulation. Keep the grammatical agent (God, through Christ) explicit; never a passive construction obscuring who reconciles whom. Mandatory human theologian review.
Redemption
Approved rendering: 救赎
Transliteration: jiùshú
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: a debt-repayment-by-the-sinner gloss
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:13-14. Must be distinguished from the folk-religious transactional logic of 还愿 (repaying/fulfilling a vow to a deity after receiving a favor). God pays the price himself on the sinner’s behalf; it is not a debt the sinner discharges to appease a deity. Mandatory human theologian review.
Union With Christ
Approved rendering: 一同埋葬 / 一同复活
Transliteration: yītóng máizàng / yītóng fùhuó
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: 轮回, 投胎, 还魂
Original: συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 2:12, 2:20, 3:1, 3:3. Extends the baseline’s Critical resurrection safeguard into the believer’s own identification with Christ’s death and resurrection. NEVER 轮回 (reincarnation cycle) or 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb) or 还魂 (folk ghost-story reanimation) — being ‘raised with Christ’ must never sound like entry into an ongoing rebirth cycle, a uniquely damaging misreading given how directly dying/rising vocabulary maps onto reincarnation language in Chinese religious discourse. Require the surrounding sentence to make the incorporation sense explicit (e.g. ‘在基督里与他一同复活’), never a bare compound. Mandatory human theologian review.
Philosophy
Approved rendering: 哲学
Transliteration: zhéxué
Doctrine: Rejection of Human Philosophy and Tradition as Rivals to Christ
Rejected alternatives: 理学 (CUV precedent, flagged as collision risk, not outright forbidden), raw transliteration (unintelligible)
Original: φιλοσοφία
Category: False Teaching
NEW — PENDING THEOLOGIAN DECISION. Colossians 2:8. CUV precedent 理学 (lǐxué) is ALSO the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian ‘School of Principle.’ Using 理学 risks implying Paul condemns Confucian philosophical inquiry as such, or fails to signal Paul warns against ANY human system displacing Christ’s sufficiency, not one culturally specific school. 哲学 (the modern general-purpose loanword) is the recommended default pending an explicit, documented theologian ruling. Do NOT default silently to 理学 in Phase 2. Mandatory human theologian review before any segment containing Colossians 2:8 is processed.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: 世上的小学 (sense a) / 世界的权势 (sense b)
Transliteration: shì shàng de xiǎoxué / shìjiè de quánshì
Doctrine: Elemental Spirits / Elementary Principles and Ascetic Regulations
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching
NEW — PENDING THEOLOGIAN DECISION. Colossians 2:8, 2:20. Genuinely ambiguous in the Greek (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου): (a) elementary/rudimentary religious teachings, or (b) personified cosmic/elemental spirit-powers. The two readings produce substantially different Mandarin renderings and different pastoral applications. Do NOT default silently to either reading. Mandatory human theologian review, with both readings documented in translation memory, before any Phase 2 segment touching 2:8 or 2:20 is processed.
Suffering Afflictions
Approved rendering: 患难 / 苦难 (补满基督患难的缺欠)
Transliteration: huànnán / kùnàn
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and the Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement
Rejected alternatives: any merit-transfer / vicarious-merit gloss
Original: παθήματα / θλῖψεις
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:24, ‘filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.’ Must never imply Christ’s own atoning suffering (already finished and sufficient per 1:20) was in any way insufficient — this directly guards the curriculum’s Sufficiency of Christ doctrine. Specific, serious collision risk with the Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva ideal of vicarious, merit-generating suffering transferable to others. Paul’s suffering is missionary/pastoral hardship flowing from an already-finished atonement, never an addition to it. Mandatory human theologian review.
Word Of Christ
Approved rendering: 基督的道
Transliteration: Jīdū de dào
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: 基督的话/信息 (avoids 道 but breaks consistency with 道成肉身)
Original: λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 3:16, ‘let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.’ Second occurrence of the collision already flagged in the baseline for 道成肉身 (incarnation): 道 also names the impersonal cosmic principle of Daoist metaphysics, risking a reading of ‘letting the 道 dwell within’ as an inner Daoist cultivation practice (cf. neidan internal alchemy). Retain CUV-pattern 基督的道 for cross-curriculum consistency with 道成肉身, but require the SAME clarifying note every time: this is the personal message/teaching of the historical Christ, not an impersonal principle internalized through technique. Mandatory human theologian review; verify the note is present at every occurrence, not only the first.
High Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: 父
Transliteration: fù
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: 祖先, 老天爷
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2, 1:3, 1:12, 3:17.
Faith
Approved rendering: 信心

Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: 虔诚, 迷信, 信仰
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7; object of faith (Christ) must be recoverable from context.
Holy
Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:22, 3:12.
Saints

Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26.
Election
Approved rendering: 拣选
Transliteration: jiǎnxuǎn
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运, 缘分
Original: ἐκλεκτοί
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 3:12, ground for the ethical exhortation to put on the new self.
Sin
Approved rendering: 罪
Transliteration: zuì
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 罪犯式的罪
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:14, 2:13.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: 神的大能
Transliteration: Shén de dà néng
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 气, 法力
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:11, 1:29.
Providence
Approved rendering: 神的护理
Transliteration: Shén de hùlǐ
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运
Original: συνίστημι (cf. Col 1:17)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: Col 1:17 extends this doctrine Christologically — Christ personally sustains the created order — rendered with the new compound 而立/维系, see new term sustains_all_things below. NEVER 天意 alone; here additionally guard against Neo-Confucian 理 and Daoist 道 as impersonal sustaining principles.
Adoption
Approved rendering: 儿子的名分
Transliteration: érzi de míngfèn
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: 过继, 收养
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: doctrinal background for the inheritance (κληρονομία) promised even to bondservants at Col 3:24 — see new term inheritance below.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: 因信而生的顺服
Transliteration: yīn xìn ér shēng de shùnfú
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: 孝顺, 礼法遵从
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: functions as the doctrinal background pattern informing the household code’s submission/obedience commands (3:18-4:1) — see new terms submit_household and obey_household below, both of which must be distinguished from 孝顺.
Creation
Approved rendering: 创造 / 被造的 / 万有
Transliteration: chuàngzào / bèi zào de / wànyǒu
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: 造化
Original: κτίσις / κτίζω
Category: Creation
NEW. Colossians 1:15, 1:16, 1:23. NEVER 造化 (the Daoist impersonal, self-generating Creative Transformation of nature, Daodejing 42). Christ’s creative act is personal and deliberate, not an impersonal cosmic process. Render as verb (创造), passive participle/creature (被造的), or collective noun (万有) per grammatical role.
Cosmic Powers
Approved rendering: 有位的、主治的、执政的、掌权的
Transliteration: yǒuwèi de, zhǔzhì de, zhízhèng de, zhǎngquán de
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Rulers and Authorities
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
NEW. Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. CUV-pattern fourfold enumeration. Risk of readers mapping this list onto the elaborate Chinese folk-religious celestial/underworld bureaucracy (玉皇大帝’s court, 城隍, 土地公, 阎王) as a parallel, independently-appeasable hierarchy. Teaching must state clearly: these powers are Christ’s own creatures, publicly disarmed and shamed at the cross (2:15), never a bureaucracy requiring separate appeasement. The Roman military-triumph imagery of 2:15 additionally requires a historical-background note.
Sustains All Things
Approved rendering: 而立 / 维系
Transliteration: ér lì / wéixì
Doctrine: Christ’s Sustaining of the Universe
Original: συνίστημι
Category: Creation
NEW. Colossians 1:17, ‘in him all things hold together.’ Christologically extends the baseline’s providence doctrine (神的护理). Distinguish from Neo-Confucian 理 (Zhu Xi’s organizing rational principle sustaining reality) and Daoist 道 as an impersonal sustaining ground. Christ’s sustaining is the personal, continuous action of the divine Son, not an impersonal metaphysical principle.
Domain Of Darkness
Approved rendering: 黑暗的权势
Transliteration: hēi’àn de quánshì
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:13. Uses the same lexeme (ἐξουσία) as the positive ‘authorities’ sense at 1:16 in the cosmic_powers entry — translators must track which sense (legitimate created order vs. illegitimate present dominion) is active per occurrence.
Mystery
Approved rendering: 奥秘
Transliteration: àomì
Doctrine: Mystery of Christ Revealed
Rejected alternatives: 秘传, 天机
Original: μυστήριον
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3. Must be distinguished from 秘传 (Daoist esoteric lineage-transmission of internal-alchemy technique) and 天机 (a diviner’s/fortune-teller’s hidden cosmic secret). God’s mystery — Christ himself — is openly revealed to all believers, not secretly transmitted to a spiritual elite; load-bearing for the anti-syncretism doctrine.
Tradition Of Men
Approved rendering: 人的传统
Transliteration: rén de chuántǒng
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: 人间的遗传 (CUV, flagged for modern-register drift toward ‘genetics’)
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:8. CUV’s literal 人间的遗传 has drifted in modern Mandarin toward its biological sense (‘heredity/genetics,’ 遗传学). 人的传统 is the recommended modern-register update, a documented clarity-driven departure from literal CUV wording.
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: 字据
Transliteration: zìjù
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 2:13-14. Offers a useful but risky cultural bridge to 功过簿 (the folk-religious underworld/heavenly ledger of merits and demerits). Must be used CONTRASTIVELY: the debt is entirely and immediately cancelled by Christ’s finished work, never gradually offset by accumulated merit (功德, already forbidden in the baseline grace doctrine).
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: 敬拜天使
Transliteration: jìngbài tiānshǐ
Doctrine: Prohibition of Angel Worship
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:18-19. 敬拜 is the same verb used for worshipping God — risk that readers read this as a merely variant, permissible devotional practice rather than a condemned displacement of Christ. Direct, load-bearing parallel to Chinese folk-religious veneration of intermediary spirits (土地公, 城隍) instead of, or alongside, the supreme deity — one of the most directly transferable warnings in the letter for this cultural context.
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: 私意崇拜
Transliteration: sīyì chóngbài
Doctrine: Rejection of Self-Made Religion and Ascetic Self-Effort
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:23. Directly parallels ascetic self-mortification (苦行) in Chinese Buddhist and Daoist monastic tradition undertaken to accumulate merit or attain spiritual advancement. Paul’s explicit verdict (‘of no value’) extends the Critical-tier grace-vs-merit distinction already established in the baseline (NEVER 功德/阴德) into bodily asceticism.
Hope
Approved rendering: 盼望
Transliteration: pànwàng
Doctrine: Christ in You, the Hope of Glory
Rejected alternatives: 希望 (generic, uncertain-outcome wish)
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 1:5, 1:23, 1:27. Must be distinguished from generic 希望 and from the folk fortune-seeking connotation already flagged for 福音’s root 福 in the baseline. Christ’s indwelling presence is itself the guarantee of future glory — a certainty grounded in a finished promise, not a wish for good fortune.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: 智慧
Transliteration: zhìhuì
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Original: σοφία
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23, 3:16, 4:5. Must be distinguished from Confucian 智 (one of the Five Constant Virtues, cultivated ethical prudence) and Buddhist 般若/prajñā (meditatively attained insight into emptiness). Biblical wisdom is Christ-centered, revealed knowledge of God’s will — the letter’s central polemical term against the false teachers’ claim to superior spiritual wisdom.
Old Self
Approved rendering: 旧人
Transliteration: jiù rén
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 3:9. Establishes a definitive change of identity, not merely of behavior; must be taught as decisive, not gradual (contrast with Confucian 修身).
New Self
Approved rendering: 新人
Transliteration: xīn rén
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νέος/καινός ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 3:10, ‘renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator’ — deliberately echoes 形像 from 1:15. The identical Mandarin term 形像 must be reused verbatim at 3:10 to preserve the intertextual Christology-to-anthropology link. Not gradual Confucian self-cultivation (修身).
Submit Household
Approved rendering: 顺服
Transliteration: shùnfú
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:18. Shares its root with the baseline’s 因信而生的顺服 (obedience of faith). Every occurrence must be anchored to its qualifier ‘as is fitting in the Lord,’ preventing collapse into a generic patriarchal social hierarchy detached from its Christ-centered framing, and read alongside the immediately following command tempering it (husbands: love, do not be harsh).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: 基业
Transliteration: jīyè
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: 遗产 (ordinary secular inheritance from a deceased relative)
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:24. Distinct from ordinary secular 遗产. Connects directly to the baseline’s Adoption doctrine (儿子的名分): full inheritance-rights sonship, not a lesser or provisional status, here extended pointedly to bondservants with no legal inheritance rights in Roman society.
Medium Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: 福音
Transliteration: fúyīn
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: 好消息, 喜讯
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:5, 1:23; root 福 fortune-seeking caution still applies.
Church
Approved rendering: 教会
Transliteration: jiàohuì
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: 庙, 寺, 道观
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:18, 1:24, 4:15-16.
Glory
Approved rendering: 荣耀
Transliteration: róngyào
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 光宗耀祖
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:11, 1:27, 3:4.
Peace
Approved rendering: 平安
Transliteration: píng’ān
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: 安宁, 平安符式的平安
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged, for the personal/relational sense (Col 1:2 greeting, 3:15). COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: must be kept distinct from the new cosmic/achieved sense of εἰρήνη at Col 1:20, rendered 和平 — see new term peace_cosmic below. Do not use 平安 and 和平 interchangeably.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: 神的国
Transliteration: Shén de guó
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: 天下, 王朝
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. COLOSSIANS EXTENSION: Col 1:13 identifies this reign specifically with ‘the kingdom of his beloved Son’ — render as 神的国 or 他爱子的国 consistently; do not coin a novel phrase.
Mission
Approved rendering: 宣教
Transliteration: xuānjiào
Doctrine: Mission to the Nations
Rejected alternatives: 洋教传播
Original: θύρα τοῦ λόγου / εὐκαιρία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 4:3-5. Avoid framing that reinforces the historic 洋教 (‘foreign religion’) stigma.
Peace Cosmic
Approved rendering: 和平
Transliteration: hépíng
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρήνη / εἰρηνοποιέω
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:20. Must be a distinct Mandarin word from the baseline’s 平安 (personal peace with God, reused at Col 3:15) — do not use interchangeably. Both must avoid the folk-amulet ‘safety/good fortune’ reading already flagged for 平安 in the baseline.
Head
Approved rendering: 头
Transliteration: tóu
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:18, 2:10, 2:19. Requires clarification as a source-of-life/authority metaphor for organic union, not a literal anatomical claim nor a bureaucratic chain-of-command title (头目/头儿).
Body Church
Approved rendering: 身体
Transliteration: shēntǐ
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:18, 1:24, 2:19. Must be distinguished from σῶμα’s other sense (‘substance/reality,’ 2:17) — see body_substance below. Do not conflate the two required Mandarin renderings under one English gloss ‘body.‘
Body Substance
Approved rendering: 形体 / 实体
Transliteration: xíngtǐ / shítǐ
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: 身体 (reserved for the church-as-body sense)
Original: σῶμα
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:17, ‘a shadow of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.’ Same Greek word as body_church, different sense and different required Mandarin term — a real conflation risk given both share one English gloss ‘body.‘
Blood
Approved rendering: 血
Transliteration: xuè
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:20. Offers a partially useful but risky cultural bridge to 歃血为盟 (blood-oath covenant custom between equals, e.g. the Peach Garden Oath) — must be corrected toward substitutionary, atoning death for sin, not a mutual bonding oath.
Baptism
Approved rendering: 洗礼
Transliteration: xǐlǐ
Doctrine: Baptism as Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: 净身 (Buddhist/Daoist ritual-purification washing)
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 2:12. Must be distinguished from 净身. Baptism symbolizes union with Christ’s death and resurrection, not mechanical ritual cleansing achieving purity through the rite itself.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: 割礼
Transliteration: gēlǐ
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: περιτομή
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 2:11. No competing native Chinese ritual referent. Catechetical note needed: this is a completed spiritual reality in Christ, not an ongoing physical obligation.
Humility
Approved rendering: 谦卑
Transliteration: qiānbēi
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Same Greek word (ταπεινοφροσύνη) used both negatively (condemned, self-displaying ascetic posture, Col 2:18, 2:23) and positively (genuine, Spirit-given virtue, Col 3:12). Not a Mandarin-culture collision but an internal-text ambiguity: every occurrence needs a translator’s note distinguishing ‘false, self-displaying humility’ from ‘true, Christ-given humility.‘
Patience
Approved rendering: 忍耐
Transliteration: rěnnài
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: 忍辱 (Buddhist pāramitā, self-cultivated merit-generating virtue)
Original: μακροθυμία / ὑπομονή
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 1:11, 3:12. Must be distinguished from Buddhist 忍辱 (one of the Six Perfections, self-cultivated toward liberation/merit). Biblical patience is Spirit-given fruit, not a self-cultivated perfection accruing merit.
Love Bond
Approved rendering: 爱心 / 联络全德的
Transliteration: àixīn / liánluò quán dé de
Doctrine: Love as the Bond of Perfection
Original: ἀγάπη / σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 3:14, ‘love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.’ The CUV phrase 联络全德的 (‘that which links together complete virtue’) risks a Confucian ethical-completion reading (virtue accomplished through cultivated relational duty) rather than the Spirit-given, Christ-grounded love the passage describes. Requires a clarifying note paralleling the baseline’s cautions on 义 and 成圣.
Spiritual Songs
Approved rendering: 诗章、颂词、灵歌
Transliteration: shīzhāng, sòngcí, línggē
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Original: ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 3:16. 灵歌 (‘spirit songs’) risks the same bare-灵 ambiguity strictly forbidden for Holy Spirit in the baseline (cf. 灵媒, ‘spirit medium,’ associated with folk-religious trance/possession practice). Recommend an explicit qualifying gloss or footnote clarifying these are Spirit-inspired congregational songs, not shamanistic spirit-channeling.
Obey Household
Approved rendering: 听从 / 顺从
Transliteration: tīngcóng / shùncóng
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: 孝顺 (Confucian filial obedience owed to parents/ancestors)
Original: ὑπακούω
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:20, 3:22. Must be distinguished from 孝顺, already flagged in the baseline’s obedience-of-faith note. Household-code obedience here is grounded in pleasing the Lord (3:20, 3:22), not an independent filial-piety ethic.
Bondservants
Approved rendering: 奴仆
Transliteration: núpú
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:22, 4:1. Requires a cultural/historical background note (not primarily a doctrinal collision) distinguishing Greco-Roman slavery from both modern chattel slavery and the historical Chinese bonded-servant practice (奴婢).
Masters Human
Approved rendering: 主人
Transliteration: zhǔrén
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: κύριος (human sense)
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:22, 4:1. Doctrinally correct per the baseline’s rule that 主人 is too weak a term for Christ’s Lordship, but this means Paul’s Greek wordplay (κύριος used for both human master and divine Lord) is necessarily lost in Mandarin. Compensate in Phase 2 with an explicit clause or footnote rather than forcing a lexical pun Mandarin does not support.
Minister
Approved rendering: 执事
Transliteration: zhíshì
Doctrine: Gospel Ministry and Fellowship among Co-Laborers
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:7, 1:23, 1:25, 4:7. Can also denote a general temple/religious-institution functionary in ordinary Chinese usage (庙里的执事); ensure the specifically Christian gospel-ministry sense is clear from context.
Prayer General
Approved rendering: 祷告
Transliteration: dǎogào
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Prayer
Original: προσευχή
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 4:2. The broader general term for prayer; distinguish from the baseline’s narrower 代求 (intercession specifically on behalf of others).
Understanding Knowledge
Approved rendering: 真知
Transliteration: zhēnzhī
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Rejected alternatives: 知识 (generic intellectual data)
Original: σύνεσις / ἐπίγνωσις
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 1:9-10, 2:2-3. Full, relationally rooted knowledge of God’s will, not mere intellectual data; prefer 真知 or a qualifying phrase over generic 知识 where the relational/experiential sense is primary.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: 感恩
Transliteration: gǎn’ēn
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:3, 1:12, 2:7, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2.
Apostle
Approved rendering: 使徒
Transliteration: shǐtú
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: 宗师, 大师
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:1, Paul’s self-designation.
Cross
Approved rendering: 十字架
Transliteration: shízìjià
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: σταυρός
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:20, 2:14. Established, distinctively Christian term with no competing Chinese religious referent — a doctrinally ‘safe’ marker.
Preeminence
Approved rendering: 居首位
Transliteration: jū shǒuwèi
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:18, God’s stated intent that Christ hold first place in everything. Straightforward rank term, low collision risk.
Bearing Fruit
Approved rendering: 结果子
Transliteration: jié guǒzi
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: καρποφορέω
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 1:6, 1:10. Natural agricultural metaphor for the gospel’s ongoing advance and growth; works equivalently in Chinese.
Open Door
Approved rendering: 传道的门
Transliteration: chuándào de mén
Doctrine: Mission and Gracious Speech toward Outsiders
Original: θύρα τοῦ λόγου
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 4:3. Standard, natural missions metaphor, minimal risk.
Gracious Speech
Approved rendering: 和气
Transliteration: héqi
Doctrine: Mission and Gracious Speech toward Outsiders
Rejected alternatives: 恩典 (reserved for the soteriological sense of χάρις)
Original: χάρις (ethical sense, non-technical) / ἅλας
Category: Faith
NEW — IMPORTANT EXCEPTION. Colossians 4:6, ‘let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.’ This occurrence of χάρις is the ordinary, non-technical ethical sense, NOT the Critical-tier soteriological term. 和气 is the doctrinally safe and contextually correct choice; do not mechanically force 恩典 onto this verse.
Fellow Servant
Approved rendering: 一同作仆人的
Transliteration: yītóng zuò púrén de
Doctrine: Gospel Ministry and Fellowship among Co-Laborers
Original: σύνδουλος
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:7, 4:7. Straightforward compound term of solidarity among gospel workers, applied to Epaphras and Tychicus.
Fellow Worker
Approved rendering: 同工
Transliteration: tónggōng
Doctrine: Gospel Ministry and Fellowship among Co-Laborers
Original: συνεργός
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 4:11. Standard, well-established term for gospel co-laborers named in the closing greetings.
