Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy (English → Mandarin)

Scope and Method

This document analyzes 1 Timothy in the original Koine Greek across all 6 chapters. Every term already established in the Romans baseline Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json) is reused exactly as recorded there; this document does not re-derive those renderings but flags every reuse explicitly. New terms specific to 1 Timothy’s doctrines (Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching, Qualifications for Church Leadership, Christ as the One Mediator, Public Worship and Prayer, the Church as Pillar of Truth, Godliness and Contentment, Care for Widows, Guarding the Deposit of Faith) are analyzed fresh, with the same fields used in the baseline: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, Mandarin rendering, and destination-language risk.

Part 1 treats the core passage (1 Timothy 3:1-13) verse by verse. Part 2 treats the entire book chapter by chapter, including chapter 3’s continuation (3:14-16), which is inseparable from the core passage’s argument and is treated immediately after it.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Verse by Verse)

3:1 — Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.

trustworthy sayingπιστὸς ὁ λόγοςpistos ho logos”faithful/reliable is the word”A formulaic marker (occurs 5x in the Pastorals) certifying a statement as authoritative apostolic tradition”This is a trustworthy saying,” “This saying is sure,” “This is a faithful statement”Anchors what follows (church office) as settled apostolic teaching, not personal opinion — directly serves the Sound-Doctrine-vs-False-Teaching doctrine这话是可信的 (zhè huà shì kěxìn de)Medium — must not be flattened to a generic transition phrase; it functions as a doctrinal-reliability seal, reusing the semantic root of 信 (faith) from baseline 信心
office of overseerἐπισκοπήepiskopē”a looking-over, oversight”The office/function of oversight (abstract noun from ἐπίσκοπος)“the office of a bishop,” “the office of overseer,” “the position of an overseer”The formal, recognized church office being described in 3:1-7 — foundational term for Qualifications for Church Leadership监督的职分 (jiàndū de zhífèn)Medium — see risk note under ἐπίσκοπος (3:2)
good workκαλὸν ἔργονkalon ergon”a good/noble task”A worthy, honorable undertaking”a noble task,” “a good work,” “an honorable position”Frames church leadership as service, not status or privilege善工 (shàn gōng) / 美好的工作 (měihǎo de gōngzuò)Low

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
overseerἐπίσκοποςepiskopos”one who watches over”Church leadership office; used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος (elder) in the Pastorals (cf. Titus 1:5-7)“bishop,” “overseer,” “superintendent”The office at the center of the core passage监督 (jiàndū)High — modern secular Mandarin uses 监督 for a workplace “supervisor/inspector”; must be clearly established as a spiritual shepherding office, not a managerial rank. Also must be taught alongside 长老 (elder, 3:5’s “elders” language elsewhere, cf. 5:17) as the same office viewed under two titles, not two hierarchical ranks — a common source of confusion in traditions with an episcopal hierarchy unfamiliar to first-generation Chinese believers.
above reproachἀνεπίλημπτοςanepilēmptos”not able to be laid hold of/grasped” (i.e., no valid accusation can be made)Blameless in public reputation and conduct”above reproach,” “blameless,” “irreproachable”Character qualification, not sinless perfection无可指责 (wú kě zhǐzé)Low
husband of one wifeμιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρmias gynaikos anēr”a man of one woman”Debated: (a) married only once (no serial remarriage), (b) monogamously faithful, (c) married (not single) — majority reading is (b)“husband of one wife,” “faithful to his wife,” “a one-woman man”Requires monogamous marital fidelity as a leadership qualification只作一个妇人的丈夫 (zhǐ zuò yī gè fùrén de zhàngfu)High — historic Chinese marriage practice included concubinage (妻妾制) legally until 1930 and persists culturally in the modern “mistress” phenomenon (小三); this qualification must be taught as a positive requirement of exclusive marital fidelity, not merely a prohibition, and without implying divorced or widowed-and-remarried men are automatically disqualified (interpretive debate should be flagged, not resolved silently in translation)
sober-mindedνηφάλιοςnēphalios”not intoxicated, temperate”Clear-headed, self-possessed, free from excess (root sense: sobriety from wine, extended to general clear judgment)“sober-minded,” “temperate,” “vigilant”Steady, undistracted judgment fit for spiritual oversight有节制 (yǒu jiézhì)Low
self-controlledσώφρωνsōphrōn”sound-minded”Prudent, disciplined, exercising sound judgment over one’s desires”self-controlled,” “sensible,” “prudent”Distinguish from Confucian 克己 (self-restraint for social harmony/propriety) — biblical self-control is Spirit-enabled character, not merely social self-regulation自守 (zìshǒu)Medium
respectableκόσμιοςkosmios”orderly, well-arranged”Decorous, orderly in conduct and appearance”respectable,” “orderly,” “well-behaved”Public conduct consistent with the gospel端正 (duānzhèng)Low
hospitableφιλόξενοςphiloxenos”lover of strangers/guests”Generous welcome of outsiders/travelers into one’s home”hospitable,” “given to hospitality”Practical outworking of Christian love toward outsiders, including itinerant believers乐意接待远人 (lèyì jiēdài yuǎnrén)Low
able to teachδιδακτικόςdidaktikos”skilled in teaching”Capacity and aptitude to instruct others in sound doctrine”able to teach,” “apt to teach”Ties church leadership directly to the Sound-Doctrine-vs-False-Teaching doctrine — an overseer must be able to refute error (cf. 1:3-7)善于教导 (shànyú jiàodǎo)Low

not violent(μὴ) πλήκτης(mē) plēktēs”not a striker”Not physically aggressive or prone to violence”not violent,” “not a bully,” “not pugnacious”Leadership must model peace, not coercion不打人 (bù dǎ rén)Low

not quarrelsomeἄμαχοςamachos”not a fighter”Peaceable; avoids needless conflict”not quarrelsome,” “peaceable,” “uncontentious”Reinforces peaceable leadership character不争竞 (bù zhēngjìng)Low
not a lover of moneyἀφιλάργυροςaphilargyros”not money-loving”Free from greed; unmoved by financial self-interest in ministry”not a lover of money,” “not greedy,” “free from the love of money”Directly anticipates the Godliness-and-Contentment doctrine developed fully in 6:6-10不贪财 (bù tāncái)Medium — must be linked forward to ch. 6’s “godliness as a means of gain” warning so it is not read as an isolated personal-virtue item

3:4 — τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος·

submissionὑποταγήhypotagē”an ordering under”Willing, respectful submission to legitimate authority within a structured relationship”submission,” “obedience,” “being under control”Children’s respectful order within the household — not a term for authoritarian domination顺服 (shùnfú)Medium

deaconδιάκονοςdiakonos”servant, one who serves (at table)“A recognized office of practical service and ministry alongside the overseer/elder office”deacon,” “servant,” “minister”Second recognized office in the Qualifications-for-Church-Leadership doctrine执事 (zhíshì)Medium — 执事 historically also denoted a general administrative functionary in Chinese bureaucratic and temple contexts (e.g., temple caretaker); must be clearly anchored as a specific New Testament church office of Christ-centered service
dignifiedσεμνόςsemnos”grave, honorable”Serious, respect-worthy character (adjective form of σεμνότης, 3:4)“dignified,” “worthy of respect,” “serious-minded”Same character quality required of deacons as of overseers’ households端庄 (duānzhuāng)Low

mystery of the faithμυστήριον τῆς πίστεωςmystērion tēs pisteōs”the hidden thing [now revealed] of the faith”The revealed content of the gospel, previously hidden, now disclosed in Christ (cf. 3:16’s “mystery of godliness”)“mystery of the faith,” “deep truths of the faith,” “the revealed truth of the gospel”Deacons must hold, not merely serve alongside, sound doctrine — reinforces Sound-Doctrine and Guarding-the-Deposit doctrines真道的奥秘 (zhēndào de àomì)High — 奥秘 (àomì, “mystery”) must be distinguished from esoteric secret-transmission traditions in Chinese Buddhism/Daoism (密传, “secret transmission,” passed master-to-disciple); the biblical “mystery” is a truth God has openly disclosed to all, not an esoteric teaching reserved for initiates
clean conscienceκαθαρὰ συνείδησιςkathara syneidēsis”a pure conscience”An inner moral faculty cleared of guilt, here rendered by CUV as “a clean heart” rather than the more literal “conscience""a clear conscience,” “a pure conscience,” “a clean heart”Deacons must combine sound belief with integrity of inner life清洁的心 (qīngjié de xīn)High — note the CUV divergence: elsewhere συνείδησις is rendered 良心 (“conscience,” see 1:5, 1:19, 4:2), but here CUV shifts to 心 (“heart”). Both renderings must be taught as referring to the same Greek term so learners do not perceive two different faculties

3:10 — καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk

not slanderersμὴ διαβόλουςmē diabolous”not slanderous/accusing”Adjectival use of διάβολος — “slanderous,” distinct from the same word used as a proper noun for “the devil” in 3:6-7”not slanderers,” “not malicious gossips,” “not given to slander”A lexical trap: the identical word that names “the devil” (3:6-7) here functions as a common adjective meaning “slanderous.” Translators must not import “devil” imagery into this verse不说谗言 (bù shuō chányán)Medium — flag the lexical homonymy explicitly so translators do not render this clause as “not devilish” or otherwise conflate it with the proper-noun sense used two verses earlier

good standingβαθμὸς καλόςbathmos kalos”a good step/degree”A commendable, secure position/reputation gained through faithful service”good standing,” “a good position,” “a good degree of honor”The reward of faithful service is spiritual standing, not merit accumulated toward salvation美好的地步 (měihǎo de dìbù)Medium — must be taught carefully so this “gaining a good standing” is not read as merit that contributes to justification (which the baseline’s 恩典/义 Critical notes already guard against); this is recognition/fruit within the church community, not a soteriological transaction
great confidenceπολλὴ παρρησίαpollē parrēsia”much boldness/freedom of speech”Boldness, confident freedom before God and others”great confidence,” “great boldness,” “much assurance”Faithful service produces confident assurance in one’s relationship with Christ大有胆量 (dà yǒu dǎnliàng)Low

PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 — Sound Doctrine and the Gospel of Grace

Establishes the letter’s occasion: Timothy is charged to oppose false teachers at Ephesus and is reminded of his own calling through Paul’s testimony of grace.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
sound doctrineὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλίαhygiainousa didaskalia”healthy teaching”Doctrine that produces spiritual health, as opposed to teaching that “spreads like gangrene” (2 Tim 2:17)“sound doctrine,” “healthy teaching,” “sound instruction”The positive standard against which false teaching (1:3-7) is measured — central to the Sound-Doctrine-vs-False-Teaching doctrine纯正的教训 (chúnzhèng de jiàoxùn)High — must be consistently distinguished from teaching merely deemed “orthodox” by cultural or institutional consensus; soundness is measured by conformity to the apostolic gospel, not social respectability
to teach a different doctrineἑτεροδιδασκαλέωheterodidaskaleō”to teach otherwise/differently”To teach content that deviates from apostolic doctrine”to teach a different doctrine,” “to teach false doctrine,” “to teach otherwise”The specific error Timothy must confront (1:3; reused at 6:3)传别的教训 (chuán bié de jiàoxùn)High
mythsμῦθοςmythos”a tale, legend”Fabricated stories/speculative traditions lacking historical or apostolic grounding”myths,” “fables,” “legends”Contrasted with sound doctrine and genuine apostolic tradition荒渺无据的话语 (huǎngmiǎo wújù de huàyǔ)Medium
genealogiesγενεαλογίαgenealogia”a tracing of descent”Speculative ancestral/lineage records used to fuel fruitless controversy”genealogies,” “genealogical speculation”Distraction from the gospel, not a devaluing of family lineage itself家谱 (jiāpǔ)Medium — 家谱 carries significant weight in Chinese ancestor-veneration and clan-identity culture; must clarify Paul condemns speculative, divisive use of genealogies for doctrinal disputation, not genealogy or family heritage as such
conscienceσυνείδησιςsyneidēsis”co-knowledge, moral awareness”The inner faculty of moral self-judgment; can be “good” (1:5,19), “seared” (4:2), or “clean” (3:9)“conscience”A recurring term across the letter tracking the health of one’s inner moral life relative to sound faith良心 (liángxīn)Medium/High — 良心 in Confucian anthropology (esp. Mencius) denotes an innately good moral sense requiring only cultivation; biblical conscience can be corrupted, defiled, or seared, and requires cleansing through faith in Christ (cf. Heb 9:14; also cf. 3:9’s variant rendering as 心)
mercyἔλεοςeleos”compassion shown to the undeserving/afflicted”Compassionate, undeserved kindness, often paired with grace (χάρις) and peace (εἰρήνη) in Pauline greetings”mercy”Part of the 1:2 greeting formula (grace/mercy/peace), showing mercy as distinct from but allied with grace (恩典, baseline Critical term)怜悯 (liánmǐn)Medium
Saviorσωτήρsōtēr”one who saves/rescues”The title applied to God (1:1; 4:10) and, in Titus, to Christ; denotes the one who accomplishes salvation”Savior”Establishes God as the acting Savior of the letter’s opening, tying directly into baseline salvation (救恩)救主 (Jiùzhǔ)High — must be kept distinct from generic folk “savior” figures (cf. baseline Messiah note on 弥勒/Maitreya); 救主 denotes the unique, historical Savior who has already accomplished salvation, not one of several anticipated world-saviors
King of the agesβασιλεὺς τῶν αἰώνωνbasileus tōn aiōnōn”king of the ages/eternities”God’s eternal sovereign rule, transcending all historical epochs”King of the ages,” “King eternal,” “the eternal King”Part of the doxology in 1:17, reinforcing God’s transcendent (not merely dynastic) kingship永世的君王 (yǒngshì de jūnwáng)Medium — reuse the caution already established under baseline kingdom_of_god: must not be read through the lens of a this-worldly dynasty (王朝) or “all under heaven” (天下) framing
the good fightκαλὴ στρατείαkalē strateia”good military service/campaign”A military metaphor for faithful perseverance in ministry and doctrine”the good fight,” “the good warfare,” “wage the good warfare”Reappears as καλὸς ἀγών in 6:12; must render consistently那美好的仗 (nà měihǎo de zhàng)Low/Medium
deliver to Satanπαραδίδωμι τῷ Σατανᾷparadidōmi tō Satana”to hand over to Satan”A severe act of church discipline placing an unrepentant person outside the community’s protective fellowship”delivered to Satan,” “handed over to Satan”Formal church discipline for those (Hymenaeus, Alexander) who have shipwrecked their faith through blasphemy交给撒但 (jiāo gěi Sǎdàn)Medium — must be distinguished from folk cursing/exorcism rituals; this is an act of formal church discipline aimed at eventual restoration, not a magical curse
blasphemerβλάσφημοςblasphēmos”one who speaks injuriously [of God]“Speech that dishonors or slanders God”blasphemer”Describes Paul’s own pre-conversion state, magnifying grace谤渎的人 (bàngdú de rén)Low
hopeἐλπίςelpis”confident expectation”Assured expectation grounded in God’s character and promise, not wishful uncertainty”hope""Christ Jesus our hope” (1:1) — reused throughout the letter’s warnings against apostasy (cf. baseline caution against fatalistic renderings under election/providence)盼望 (pànwàng)Medium
patience/longsufferingμακροθυμίαmakrothymia”long-temperedness”Sustained forbearance, especially God’s patience toward sinners (1:16)“patience,” “longsuffering,” “great patience”Displayed toward Paul as “the foremost” of sinners, illustrating grace’s reach忍耐 (rěnnài)Low

Reused baseline terms in ch. 1 (no new rendering needed): 神 (God), 耶稣/基督 (Jesus/Christ), 主 (Lord), 恩典 (grace), 信心 (faith), 福音 (gospel, 1:11), 救恩/救 (salvation, 1:15), 律法 (law, 1:7-9), 罪 (sin, 1:9,15), 荣耀 (glory, 1:17), 使徒 (apostle, 1:1), 父 (Father, 1:2), 平安 (peace, 1:2).

Chapter 2 — Public Worship, Prayer, and the One Mediator

Instructions for corporate prayer and worship, the doctrine of Christ as sole Mediator, and conduct expectations for men and women in the assembly.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
prayerπροσευχήproseuchē”a praying toward [God]“General term for address to God”prayer,” “prayers”First of four prayer-terms in 2:1, foundational to the Public-Worship-and-Prayer doctrine祷告 (dǎogào)Low
supplicationδέησιςdeēsis”an asking, request”Specific petitionary requests”supplication,” “petition,” “request”Paired with prayer to stress urgent asking祈求 (qíqiú)Low
dignityσεμνότηςsemnotēs(see 3:4)(see 3:4)“dignity,” “reverence,” “respectfulness”Applied here to the corporate quality of life sought for society at large so believers may live godly, peaceable lives端庄 (duānzhuāng)Low (reuse)
mediatorμεσίτηςmesitēs”one who stands in the middle”One who mediates/reconciles between two parties, here God and humanity”mediator,” “go-between,” “intermediary”The central term for the Christ-as-the-One-Mediator doctrine (2:5): “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”中保 (zhōngbǎo)Critical — must never be confused with the many intermediary figures of Chinese folk religion, Buddhism, or Daoism who mediate between worshippers and gods/ancestors/fate (e.g., spirit mediums 灵媒, ancestor tablets as intermediaries with deceased forebears, bodhisattvas interceding on a devotee’s behalf, temple priests performing rites on a petitioner’s behalf). 2:5’s “one mediator” (εἷς μεσίτης) is emphatically exclusive — Christ alone, not one of many available intermediaries one might choose among
ransomἀντίλυτρονantilytron”a substitute-price paid to release/redeem”A price paid to secure the release of someone in bondage; here Christ’s substitutionary self-giving “for all""ransom,” “ransom payment”Explains the basis of Christ’s unique mediatorial work (2:6)赎价 (shújià)High — must be distinguished from folk/Buddhist notions of paying off karmic debt (还债/消业) or ritual payments made to appease spirits/ghosts (买命钱 in folk exorcism); Christ’s ransom is a one-time, fully sufficient sacrificial payment of the penalty for sin before God, received by faith, not an ongoing ritual transaction
modestyαἰδώςaidōs”a sense of shame/propriety”Becoming, decorous self-restraint, especially in dress and demeanor”modesty,” “propriety,” “decency”Part of 2:9’s instruction on women’s adornment廉耻 (liánchǐ)Medium — must be taught as inward character (reverence and self-respect before God), not merely an external dress code imposed without regard to heart posture
quietness/silenceἡσυχίαhēsychia”stillness, quietness”A calm, non-disruptive demeanor; in 2:11-12 specifically describes the manner of women’s learning/conduct in the gathered assembly”silence,” “quietness,” “a quiet spirit”Directly connects to the Qualifications-for-Church-Leadership doctrine and is a passage of significant interpretive debate (complementarian vs. egalitarian readings)安静 (ānjìng)High — translators must flag this passage for theologian review given the ongoing debate over its scope and application (local/temporary situation at Ephesus vs. universal principle); the Mandarin rendering must not prejudge the debate by importing connotations of total silence/exclusion beyond what the term itself denotes
exercise authority over / domineerαὐθεντέωauthenteō”to have full power/mastery over” (rare word; only NT occurrence)Debated: neutral “to exercise authority,” or negative “to domineer/usurp authority""to exercise authority over,” “to domineer,” “to have authority over,” “to dictate to”Central, contested term in 2:12 directly touching the Qualifications-for-Church-Leadership doctrine辖管 (xiáguǎn)Critical — this is one of the most contested single words in the New Testament for gender-and-leadership debates; 辖管 (carrying connotations of “to control/dominate”) reflects one interpretive tradition. Any teaching use must flag the lexical debate explicitly rather than presenting 辖管 as a settled, uncontested rendering
transgressionπαράβασιςparabasis”a stepping across/aside”A specific act of violating a known command”transgression,” “trespass”Describes Eve’s fall (2:14), tied to baseline sin (罪) family过犯 (guòfàn)Medium
saved through childbearingσωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίαςsōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias”she will be saved through the childbearing”One of the most difficult phrases in the Pastorals; proposed readings include: (a) physical preservation/safety through childbirth, (b) sanctification worked out through the domestic role of motherhood, (c) salvation secured through “the childbearing” (i.e., the birth of Christ, with the definite article read as referring to a specific, singular birth)“saved through childbearing,” “kept safe through childbirth,” “saved through the Childbirth”Extremely sensitive: must under no circumstance be read as salvation-by-works achieved through the biological act of bearing children, which would contradict the entire Justification-by-Faith framework already established as Critical in the Romans baseline (恩典, 义, 称义)在生产上得救 (zài shēngchǎn shàng déjiù)Critical — requires a mandatory theologian’s note distinguishing this from any works-based or gender-essentialist soteriology; must never be taught or footnoted in a way that implies women are saved by a different mechanism (childbearing) than men (faith), which would directly contradict Romans 3:22’s “no distinction” and the baseline’s Critical grace/faith framework
loveἀγάπηagapē”selfless, committed love”God-given, committed love, distinct from romantic or merely affectionate love”love”Foundational virtue named throughout the letter (e.g., 1:5, 1:14, 2:15, 4:12, 6:11)爱 (ài)Medium — 爱 alone is the everyday word for all kinds of love including romantic love (爱情) and family affection; theological contexts should specify “神的爱” or pair with 舍己 (self-giving) language where the specifically agape sense must be clear

Reused baseline terms in ch. 2: 神 (God), 平安/感恩/代求 (peace/thanksgiving/intercession, 2:1), 圣洁 (holy, “holy hands,” 2:8), 外邦人 (Gentiles, 2:7), 使徒 (apostle, 2:7), 救恩/得救 (salvation, 2:4,15), 圣洁 (holiness, 2:15).

Chapter 3 (Continued) — 3:14-16: The Church as Pillar of Truth and the Mystery of Godliness

This section immediately follows the core passage and completes its argument: Paul explains why leadership qualifications matter — because the church itself is God’s household and the guardian of revealed truth.

household of Godοἶκος θεοῦoikos theou”house of God”The church as God’s own family/household”household of God,” “God’s household,” “family of God”Explains why leadership character (ch. 3:1-13) matters: it governs God’s own family神的家 (Shén de jiā)Medium — connects to baseline adoption (儿子的名分) doctrine; must be taught as a relational family, not an institutional bureaucracy
church of the living Godἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντοςekklēsia theou zōntos”assembly of the living God”The church as belonging to the one true, living God (as opposed to lifeless idols)“church of the living God”Reuses baseline 教会 + 神; “living” (ζῶντος) implicitly contrasts the true God with lifeless idols — relevant given Chinese folk-religious idol/image veneration永生神的教会 (yǒngshēng Shén de jiàohuì)Medium
pillar and foundation of the truthστῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείαςstylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias”a pillar and a support/buttress of the truth”Architectural metaphor: the church visibly upholds and displays revealed truth to the world”pillar and foundation of the truth,” “pillar and buttress of the truth,” “pillar and ground of the truth”Central term for the Church-as-Pillar-of-Truth doctrine — the church’s God-given role as truth’s visible support structure, not truth’s source真理的柱石和根基 (zhēnlǐ de zhùshí hé gēnjī)High — must be clarified carefully: the church upholds and displays revealed truth; it does not generate or possess authority over truth independent of Scripture and apostolic teaching. This distinction matters given church-authority structures (imperial-sponsored religious institutions, or contemporary institutional-authority expectations) familiar to Chinese readers
mystery of godlinessτὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριονto tēs eusebeias mystērion”the mystery of godliness/piety”The now-revealed truth of God’s redemptive work in Christ, which produces true godliness”mystery of godliness,” “mystery of our religion,” “the great truth of our faith”Introduces the christological summary/hymn of 3:16, grounding the Godliness-and-Contentment doctrine in the person of Christ, not mere ethical effort敬虔的奥秘 (jìngqián de àomì)High — same 奥秘 caution as 3:9 above; also must be distinguished from generic “religious mystery” applicable to any faith tradition
manifested in the fleshἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκίephanerōthē en sarki”was made visible/manifest in flesh”The eternal Son’s real, historical incarnation into human flesh — the opening line of the christological hymn”manifested in the flesh,” “was revealed in the flesh,” “appeared in a body”Directly names the event the baseline’s incarnation doctrine (道成肉身) governs; must reuse that established phrase and its Critical-risk caution在肉身显现 (zài ròushēn xiǎnxiàn)Critical — reuse baseline 道成肉身 framework: this is the personal, eternal Word taking flesh permanently and uniquely, not a temporary or repeatable divine manifestation (never 化身/下凡)
vindicated/justified in the Spiritἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματιedikaiōthē en pneumati”was declared righteous by/in the spirit”Debated referent for πνεύματι: the Holy Spirit’s vindication of Christ (e.g., at the resurrection), or Christ’s own human spirit, or the sphere of the Spirit generally”vindicated by the Spirit,” “justified in the Spirit,” “vindicated in spirit”Second line of the christological hymn, closely tied to Christ’s resurrection and exaltation被灵称义 (bèi líng chēngyì)CRITICAL — DIRECT COLLISION WITH BASELINE RULE: CUV’s own established rendering of this verse uses 灵 (“spirit”) without the 圣 (“holy”) prefix — the very construction the Romans baseline’s Critical Holy Spirit note explicitly forbids (“NEVER use 灵 alone”). This is a genuine tension between the established CUV text and the baseline convention that MUST be flagged for mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. Recommendation: retain CUV’s 被灵称义 as the base text (to preserve textual fidelity to the established translation tradition) but require an accompanying teaching note in every instructional context clarifying that this refers to the Holy Spirit’s vindication of Christ (paralleling Romans 1:4’s “declared to be the Son of God… by the resurrection,” 神的儿子, already Critical in the baseline) — not a human spirit, an ancestral spirit (祖灵), or an unspecified spiritual force
seen by angelsὤφθη ἀγγέλοιςōphthē angelois”was seen by angels”Christ’s exaltation witnessed by the heavenly host”seen by angels”Part of the hymn’s cosmic scope被天使看见 (bèi tiānshǐ kànjiàn)Low

believed on in the worldἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳepisteuthē en kosmō”was believed [upon] in the world”Universal reception of the gospel message, reusing baseline 信 (faith) root”believed on in the world,” “was believed in throughout the world”Universal scope of the gospel’s reception被世人信服 (bèi shìrén xìnfú)Low
taken up in gloryἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃanelēmphthē en doxē”was taken up in glory”Christ’s ascension and exaltation”taken up in glory,” “was received up in glory”Reuses baseline 荣耀 (glory); closes the hymn with Christ’s exaltation被接在荣耀里 (bèi jiē zài róngyào lǐ)Medium (reuse of baseline glory-risk note)

Chapter 4 — Guarding the Deposit Against Asceticism, and Training for Godliness

Warns of end-times apostasy through demonically-inspired false asceticism, and instructs Timothy on personal and public godliness.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
depart from the faithἀφίστημι τῆς πίστεωςaphistēmi tēs pisteōs”to stand away from the faith”Apostasy — abandoning genuine, professed faith”depart from the faith,” “fall away from the faith,” “apostatize”Names the specific danger the whole letter guards against, directly serving the Guarding-the-Deposit-of-Faith doctrine离弃信仰 (líqì xìnyǎng)High
deceitful spiritsπνεύματα πλάναpneumata plana”wandering/deceiving spirits”Spiritual beings that mislead through false teaching, distinct from the Holy Spirit”deceitful spirits,” “deceiving spirits,” “seducing spirits”Source of the false asceticism described in 4:3迷惑人的邪灵 (míhuo rén de xiélíng)High — must use 邪灵 (“evil spirit”), never bare 灵, to keep an absolute distinction from 圣灵 (Holy Spirit) per baseline’s Critical rule; also distinguish from folk “ghosts” (鬼) — these are morally culpable false-teaching influences, not restless ancestral or nature spirits
teachings of demonsδιδασκαλίαι δαιμονίωνdidaskaliai daimoniōn”teachings of demons”False doctrine with a demonic, not merely human, source”teachings of demons,” “doctrines of demons”Elevates false teaching from mere error to spiritual warfare, reinforcing Sound-Doctrine-vs-False-Teaching doctrine鬼魔的教训 (guǐmó de jiàoxùn)High — 鬼魔 (guǐmó) is the established Chinese Christian term for “demon,” distinct from ancestral ghosts (祖灵/鬼魂) venerated or placated in folk religion
seared conscienceκαυστηριάζω τὴν συνείδησινkaustēriazō tēn syneidēsin”to brand/cauterize the conscience”A conscience rendered insensitive to moral truth, as if burned with a hot iron”seared conscience,” “conscience seared as with a hot iron”Vivid extension of the ch. 1 conscience (良心) theme — describes false teachers themselves良心如同被热铁烙惯了一般 (liángxīn rú tóng bèi rètiě làoguàn le yī bān)Medium (reuse of 良心 with its ch.1 risk note)
forbid marriage / require abstinence from foodsκωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτωνkōlyontōn gamein, apechesthai brōmatōn”forbidding to marry, [commanding] to abstain from foods”Ascetic legalism denying the goodness of God’s created order (marriage, food)“forbidding marriage,” “requiring abstinence from foods”The specific false teaching Paul condemns — directly relevant to Sound-Doctrine-vs-False-Teaching禁止嫁娶,禁戒食物 (jìnzhǐ jiàqǔ, jìnjiè shíwù)High — strong surface resemblance to Buddhist monastic celibacy and vegetarian/fasting disciplines (素食, 守斋) pursued as paths toward merit or purity; must be clearly framed as Paul’s condemnation of this specific false teaching (which denies the goodness of creation), not a general biblical endorsement of asceticism, nor an implicit critique of Buddhist practice as such — the text’s own logic (God’s gifts “are good,” 4:4) must be foregrounded
train yourself for godlinessγύμναζε σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειανgymnaze seauton pros eusebeian”exercise/train yourself toward godliness”Disciplined, athletic-metaphor pursuit of godly character”train yourself for godliness,” “discipline yourself for godliness”Central verb for the Godliness-and-Contentment doctrine’s practical outworking操练自己以致敬虔 (cāoliàn zìjǐ yǐzhì jìngqián)High — 操练/修炼-adjacent vocabulary risks being read through the lens of Daoist/qigong bodily energy cultivation (气功修炼) aimed at attaining spiritual power, health, or longevity through technique. Must be clarified as Spirit-enabled, Scripture-and-prayer-centered discipline aimed at Christlike character, not a technique for accumulating spiritual power
bodily trainingσωματικὴ γυμνασίαsōmatikē gymnasia”bodily exercise”Physical exercise/training, contrasted with training for godliness”bodily training,” “physical training,” “bodily exercise”Paul’s contrast: bodily training has limited value; godliness has value for all of life and the life to come身体的操练 (shēntǐ de cāoliàn)Medium — same Daoist bodily-cultivation collision risk as above should be kept in view when this verse is taught alongside 4:7
Savior of all peopleσωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπωνsōtēr pantōn anthrōpōn”savior of all men”God’s role as sustainer/rescuer of all humanity generally, with a distinct, deeper sense of savior “especially of believers""Savior of all people, especially of believers”Holds together universal common grace/provision and particular saving faith — theologically nuanced tension worth flagging万人的救主 (wànrén de jiùzhǔ)High — reuse 救主 (see ch. 1); the “especially of those who believe” qualifier must not be lost, or the verse could be misread as teaching universal salvation apart from faith
laying on of handsἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶνepithesis tōn cheirōn”a placing on of the hands”A symbolic act of commissioning/ordination, often accompanying prophecy or the recognition of a spiritual gift”laying on of hands,” “the presbytery’s laying on of hands”Formal recognition/commissioning rite for ministry, connected to Qualifications-for-Church-Leadership按手 (ànshǒu)Medium/High — must be distinguished from folk healing or qigong “energy transmission” practices (气功发功/隔空发功) that involve a practitioner’s touch or gesture to transmit a mystical force; this is a symbolic act of commissioning accompanying the Spirit’s own prior gifting (4:14), not a channel that itself confers supernatural power
council of eldersπρεσβυτέριονpresbyterion”body of elders”The collective governing body of recognized elders”council of elders,” “the elders,” “the presbytery”Reuses baseline-family term 长老 (elder); names elders acting corporately in ordination长老会 (zhǎnglǎohuì)Medium — note 长老会 is also the standard Chinese name for the Presbyterian denomination; context must make clear this refers to the functional body of elders in a local congregation, not a denominational identity

Reused baseline terms in ch. 4: 圣灵 (implicit, “the Spirit says,” 4:1 — contrast carefully with the “deceitful spirits” of the same verse), 预言 (prophecy, 4:14), 属灵恩赐 (spiritual gift, 4:14, singular χάρισμα), 圣洁/成圣 (“sanctified,” 4:5).

Chapter 5 — Care for Widows, Elders, and the Household of Faith

Practical instructions on honoring parents, structured care for genuinely destitute widows, and honoring elders who labor in the word.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
widowχήραchēra”a bereaved woman”A woman without a living husband, potentially without family support”widow”Subject of the Care-for-Widows doctrine’s structured church-support instructions (5:3-16)寡妇 (guǎfù)High — historic Confucian widow-chastity ideology (守节, culminating in commemorative “chastity arches” 贞节牌坊) both stigmatized widows and pressured them against remarriage; 1 Timothy 5 actually recommends remarriage for younger widows (5:14) and calls the church to structured, dignifying communal care — this must be taught in a way that neither reinforces widow-shaming stigma nor implies the text opposes remarriage
widow indeedὄντως χήραontōs chēra”a widow in reality/truly”A technical term for a widow with no family support, wholly dependent on the church, potentially enrolled for support/ministry”widow indeed,” “a real widow,” “a true widow”Defines the specific category eligible for the church’s structured, ongoing support真是寡妇的 (zhēn shì guǎfù de)High (see risk note above)
repay their parentsἀμοιβὰς ἀποδιδόναι τοῖς προγόνοιςamoibas apodidonai tois progonois”to give back repayments to [their] forebears”Adult children’s/grandchildren’s practical care for aging family members, framed as repaying a debt of care”repay their parents,” “make some return to their parents,” “repay their debt to their family”Framed by Paul as an application of godliness (εὐσέβεια) — note the near-overlap with, yet theological distinction from, Confucian filial piety报答父母 (bàodá fùmǔ)Medium — this instruction is compatible with Confucian filial piety (孝) but should be taught as flowing from Christian godliness and love, not merely as fulfillment of a cultural debt tied to ancestor veneration; avoid implying the text imports Confucian filial theology wholesale
double honorδιπλῆ τιμήdiplē timē”double honor/value”Elevated respect and (likely) financial support given to elders who labor well, especially in teaching”double honor,” “double honor and support”Grounds material support for teaching elders — connects Qualifications-for-Church-Leadership to practical church economics加倍的尊敬 (jiābèi de zūnjìng)Medium
rebuke publiclyἐνώπιον πάντων ἔλεγχεenōpion pantōn elenche”rebuke before all”Public correction of a sinning elder, safeguarded by the two-or-three-witness rule (5:19)“rebuke him publicly,” “reprove before all”Balances due process for elders against the risk of unaccountable leadership在众人面前责备他 (zài zhòngrén miànqián zébèi tā)Medium — highly sensitive given Chinese face-preservation (面子) norms around public correction; per the baseline’s general flag on honor/face dynamics, this requires native-speaker cultural review to ensure the necessary corrective force is not lost through excessive softening, nor made needlessly humiliating beyond the text’s intent
partialityπρόσκλισιςprosklisis”a leaning toward”Favoritism/bias in judgment”partiality,” “favoritism,” “bias”Warns against unequal treatment in matters of discipline (5:21)偏心 (piānxīn)Low

Reused baseline terms in ch. 5: 长老 (elder, established in ch. 3/4 above), 见证 (witness/testimony, cf. baseline testimony-adjacent vocabulary), 罪 (sin, 5:22,24), 按手 (laying on of hands, 5:22, reuse from ch. 4).

Chapter 6 — Godliness, Contentment, and Guarding the Deposit

Closes with instruction to slaves and masters, a sharp warning against treating godliness as a means of financial gain, the call to contentment, and Timothy’s final charge to guard what has been entrusted to him.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarinRisk
slaves under the yokeδοῦλοι ὑπὸ ζυγόνdouloi hypo zygon”slaves/servants under a yoke”First-century household slavery, addressed pastorally without endorsing or condemning the institution as such”bondservants,” “slaves under the yoke”A household-code instruction addressed to the social reality of the day奴仆在轭下 (núpú zài è xià)Medium — must be carefully framed as addressing the pastoral reality of a specific ancient social structure, not a timeless endorsement of slavery/servitude; avoid parallels that dignify or normalize historic Chinese bonded-servant or feudal-serf hierarchies
mastersδεσπότηςdespotēs”master, owner”An ordinary human master/owner in a household or estate”masters”An everyday social-relationship term, correctly rendered 主人; NOT to be confused with κύριος (主) reserved for the baseline’s exclusive Lordship-of-Christ term主人 (zhǔrén)Medium — note explicitly: this legitimately uses 主人 (rejected elsewhere in the baseline as a softened alternative for κύριος/Lord) because δεσπότης here really is an ordinary human master, not a divine title; translators must not let this correct usage bleed into softening 主 in Christological contexts
godliness as a means of gainπορισμὸς εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειανporismos einai tēn eusebeian”[supposing] godliness to be a means of profit”The false-teacher error of treating religious devotion as a path to material wealth”godliness is a means of gain,” “religion is a means of financial gain”Direct condemnation of transactional, prosperity-oriented religiosity — highly relevant to the Godliness-and-Contentment doctrine敬虔是得利的门路 (jìngqián shì délì de ménlù)High — strikingly parallels transactional folk-religious piety common in Chinese popular religion (offering worship/incense to deities, especially wealth-gods 财神, in exchange for material fortune); must be taught as Paul’s explicit condemnation of this error, providing a natural teaching bridge but requiring care not to caricature folk practice while making the doctrinal point clearly
contentmentαὐτάρκειαautarkeia”self-sufficiency, adequacy”Inner satisfaction/sufficiency that does not depend on external circumstances or possessions”contentment,” “self-sufficiency”Central positive virtue of the Godliness-and-Contentment doctrine (6:6, “godliness with contentment is great gain”)知足 (zhīzú)High — 知足 is deeply resonant with Daoist ideals (cf. Laozi, Dao De Jing 44: “知足者富,” “he who is content is rich”) and Buddhist detachment from desire; must be clarified that biblical contentment flows from active trust in God’s personal provision and eternal perspective (6:17), not from philosophical detachment, suppression of desire, or wu-wei (无为) as a technique for inner peace
love of moneyφιλαργυρίαphilargyria”love of silver/money”Greedy desire for wealth as a root cause of manifold evils”love of money""The love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (6:10)贪财 (tāncái)Medium (reuse from 3:3’s ἀφιλάργυρος root)
gentlenessπραϋπαθίαprau(o)pathia”gentleness of disposition”Mild, gentle temperament, part of the virtue-list Timothy is to pursue”gentleness,” “meekness”Positive virtue contrasted with the quarrelsome love of controversy (6:4-5)温柔 (wēnróu)Low
eternal lifeζωὴ αἰώνιοςzōē aiōnios”life of the age [to come]“Resurrection life in God’s presence, qualitatively and everlastingly different from mere biological existence”eternal life,” “everlasting life""Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called” (6:12)永生 (yǒngshēng)High — must be distinguished from Daoist physical-immortality-seeking (长生不老, historically pursued through alchemy/elixirs and internal cultivation); biblical eternal life is resurrection life granted by God in Christ, not a physically-extended present life achieved through spiritual technique
the good confessionκαλὴ ὁμολογίαkalē homologia”the good confession/profession”A public, formal profession of faith, made “in the presence of many witnesses""the good confession,” “your good confession”CUV renders ὁμολογία here with the same term family used for “testimony/witness” (μαρτυρία) elsewhere, slightly blurring a distinction the Greek maintains美好的见证 (měihǎo de jiànzhèng)Medium — flag the CUV’s terminological overlap between “confession” and “testimony”; when teaching alongside Romans 10:9’s salvation confession (耶稣是主, already Critical in the baseline), clarify these are the same category of public profession of faith
King of kings and Lord of lordsβασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντωνbasileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn”king of the ones ruling as kings, and lord of the ones ruling as lords”The most exalted possible statement of God’s absolute sovereignty over every other ruler and authority”King of kings and Lord of lords”Reuses baseline Lord (主, Critical); climactic doxological statement of exclusive divine sovereignty (6:15)万王之王,万主之主 (wàn wáng zhī wáng, wàn zhǔ zhī zhǔ)Critical — must not be softened or read through the lens of Chinese imperial titulature (e.g., 万岁, “may [the emperor] live ten thousand years”) or the Daoist folk-pantheon’s “Jade Emperor” (玉皇大帝), who is sometimes styled supreme ruler over a hierarchy of lesser gods. This title asserts God’s unique, absolute sovereignty over literally every other authority — not primacy within a pantheon of comparable powers
immortalityἀθανασίαathanasia”deathlessness”God’s inherent, uncreated eternal existence (6:16, “who alone has immortality”)“immortality”Distinct from created beings’ hope of resurrection life (永生); this is God’s own eternal nature不朽 (bùxiǔ)Medium — must be distinguished from the Daoist “immortal” (神仙/仙人), a human being believed to have attained deathlessness through alchemical or spiritual cultivation; God’s immortality is inherent and uncreated, not an achieved status
unapproachable lightφῶς ἀπρόσιτονphōs aprositon”light impossible to approach/draw near to”God’s overwhelming, transcendent holiness and glory”unapproachable light,” “light which no one can approach”Reuses baseline glory (荣耀) theme; underscores God’s utter transcendence人不能靠近的光 (rén bùnéng kàojìn de guāng)Low
guard the depositτὴν παραθήκην φύλαξονtēn parathēkēn phylaxon”guard the thing deposited/entrusted”The apostolic gospel/teaching entrusted to Timothy for safekeeping and faithful transmission, not private possession”guard the deposit,” “guard what has been entrusted to you,” “keep that which is committed to your trust”The central term for the Guarding-the-Deposit-of-Faith doctrine — closes the letter’s argument, echoing the “mystery of the faith” (3:9) and “sound doctrine” (1:10) themes守住所托付的 (shǒuzhù suǒ tuōfù de)High — must be distinguished from esoteric master-to-disciple secret-transmission lineages in Chinese Buddhism/Daoism (口传心授, 密传), in which teaching is guarded as privileged, restricted knowledge passed to select initiates. The apostolic “deposit” is a public, unchanging body of gospel truth entrusted to the whole church for open transmission to all, not an esoteric secret reserved for an inner circle
falsely called knowledgeψευδώνυμος γνῶσιςpseudōnymos gnōsis”knowledge falsely so named”A body of teaching claiming the prestige of “knowledge” (γνῶσις) while actually contradicting sound doctrine — likely referencing early proto-Gnostic tendencies”what is falsely called knowledge,” “so-called knowledge,” “pseudo-knowledge”Final warning of the letter, bookending the false-teaching warnings of ch. 1 and 4假冒的知识 (jiǎmào de zhīshì)High — must be distinguished from Buddhist “wisdom/gnosis” (智慧, 般若) attainment vocabulary; this critiques a specific false teaching claiming exclusive spiritual insight, not intellectual knowledge or learning as such

Reused baseline terms in ch. 6: 义 (righteousness, 6:11, requires the same Confucian-collision note as the baseline Critical entry), 信心 (faith, 6:11-12), 爱 (love, 6:11), 忍耐 (steadfastness, 6:11, reuse from ch.1’s μακροθυμία-family vocabulary; note ὑπομονή here is a related but distinct term — “endurance under trial” rather than “patience toward others”), 敬虔 (godliness, throughout — see glossary), 神 (God), 基督耶稣 (Christ Jesus), 本丢彼拉多 (Pontius Pilate, proper noun, CUV standard form).
