Executive Summary
01 — Executive Summary: Revelation Translation Requirements (Mandarin)
Why it matters
Revelation is the highest-collision-risk book yet processed against this Mandarin Language Package. Its apocalyptic genre, its Christ-as-Lamb worship scenes, and its dragon-as-Satan antagonist land directly on top of Chinese culture’s richest religious vocabulary — folk-Buddhist afterlife bureaucracy, Confucian virtue-ethics, Daoist cosmic cycles, and the single most positively-loaded traditional symbol in the language, 龙 (the dragon). Getting this curriculum’s requirements right is not a matter of finding equivalent words; it is a matter of actively fencing off well-established, natural-sounding Mandarin vocabulary that would otherwise quietly invert the text’s meaning. The core passage, Revelation 21:1–8, concentrates nearly every one of the curriculum’s highest-risk terms into eight verses — new heaven and earth, the holy city, the Bride, God’s dwelling with his people, the second death — making it the correct theological anchor for prioritizing review effort across all 22 chapters.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage confirmed. All 22 chapters of Revelation have been analyzed (semantic analysis, core glossary, term registry, doctrine registry, doctrine analysis, comparative theology, linguistic gap analysis). No chapter was silently skipped; chapters contributing no new load-bearing vocabulary (e.g., ch. 18) are explicitly logged as reviewed continuations of adjacent chapters.
- 15 tracked doctrines, 9 of them the designated curriculum core doctrines, with risk distribution: 6 Critical, 8 High, 1 Medium, 0 Low. Fourteen of fifteen doctrines require mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence; only one (Church as God’s Priestly People) is routed to native-speaker review.
- Term-level registry totals ~90 tracked terms (29 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline + roughly 78 new Revelation-specific entries). Of these, 19 are Critical-risk and 31 are High-risk — 50 terms in total requiring mandatory theologian sign-off on every occurrence before Phase 2 release.
- The single highest-priority risk in the entire curriculum is 龙 (dragon). Unlike every other flagged item, this is not a competing technical term but a collision between the destination language’s most positively-loaded native symbol (imperial legitimacy, national/ethnic self-identity, auspicious blessing) and the source text’s most negatively-loaded referent (Satan, finally and permanently defeated). No footnote suffices; every occurrence requires sustained, explicit doctrinal framing.
- The second-highest risk is Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints, colliding with a fully developed competing eschatological system: the Chinese folk/Buddhist underworld bureaucracy (阎王, 十殿阎罗, 功过簿, 超度), where punishment is severe but temporary, ledger-based, and ritually alterable by the living on behalf of the dead — the exact opposite of Revelation’s final, forensic, irreversible judgment.
- Worship of the Lamb requires the sharpest lexical fence in the glossary: 敬拜 (reserved exclusively for God and the Lamb) against 拜/崇拜 (the generic, multi-object folk-devotional default). This is as much a lexical-choice discipline as a doctrinal-content one.
Risks
- Structural, not incidental, collision risk. Several of this curriculum’s highest risks (dragon, judgment/underworld, new-creation/kalpa-cycle, sonship/reincarnation-cycle vocabulary proximity) arise from built-in features of the Mandarin lexicon and Chinese cosmological intuition, not from any single mistranslatable word choice. This means the risk cannot be fully retired by glossary enforcement alone — it requires sustained teaching-note discipline at every occurrence, a heavier ongoing review burden than the Romans baseline carried.
- Consistency drift risk between curricula. Because Revelation reuses many Romans-fixed terms (神, 主, 圣灵, 恩典, 义, 救恩, 复活, 荣耀, 信心) alongside terms that look similar but must NOT be reused (外邦人 vs. the new 万国/列国 for Rev 21-22’s “nations”), Phase 2 translators moving between curricula are at elevated risk of reflexive misapplication.
- Pastoral-sensitivity risk. Terms condemning idolatry and sorcery (21:8: 拜偶像的, 行邪术的) are doctrinally accurate but land on live family practice (ancestor veneration, folk ritual) for many new believers; careless catechetical framing risks alienation without the discipleship nuance the term registry already calls for.
Opportunities
- A century of settled CUV vocabulary reduces invention burden. Mandarin already has stable, community-recognized renderings for the book’s highest-visibility terms (羔羊, 新耶路撒冷, 生命树, 万王之王万主之主); the task is defense of existing good choices, not creation of new ones.
- The core passage’s density is a teaching asset. Because Revelation 21:1–8 concentrates so many Critical-tier terms, a single well-built teaching unit on the core passage can anchor the majority of the curriculum’s highest-priority doctrinal-collision training before learners encounter the more dispersed material in chapters 4–20.
- The 启示/启示录 wordplay is pedagogically useful. The book’s Mandarin title (启示录) shares its root with the fixed genre-term 启示 (“unveiling,” 1:1); this resonance can be used deliberately to reinforce the doctrine of closed, Christ-given disclosure against divinatory alternatives (谶纬, 占卜, 灵签).
Recommended actions
- Route Revelation 21:1–8 in its entirety through theologian review with no sampling — every verse of the core passage touches a Critical-tier term.
- Mandate the co-occurrence rule for 龙 at the enforcement-engine level, not just the style-guide level: any segment containing 龙 without an adjacent 魔鬼/撒但/古蛇 identification should be auto-flagged before reaching human review.
- Build a standing “three-way seal cluster” consistency check (印/封印 vs. 盖印/受印 vs. 印记) into Phase 2 validation, since all three share a root character and drift is easy across chapters 5–13.
- Front-load the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine at chapter 1, not at chapter 13 or 20 when the loaded numbers first appear — first impressions of the book’s genre otherwise default to a divinatory reading frame that later corrections struggle to displace.
- Carry forward the full Romans forbidden-substitution list unmodified and layer the Revelation-specific additions (地狱, 天堂, 极乐世界, 龙椅, 新娘 as substitutes) on top, per
analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md, before any Phase 2 segment translation begins.
Oversight totals at a glance: 15 doctrines tracked (6 Critical + 8 High = 14 requiring theologian review; 1 Medium requiring native-speaker review; 0 Low). ~90 terms tracked (19 Critical + 31 High = 50 requiring theologian review). This is the largest human-review burden of any curriculum processed against this Language Package to date.
