Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Galatians (English → Mandarin)
Purpose and Scope
This analysis identifies where Modern Standard Mandarin (Simplified script, CUV/和合本 Shen-edition register) lacks adequate vocabulary for Galatians’ doctrinal content, where existing vocabulary is contested by “crowded” semantic neighborhoods in Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist/folk-religious usage, and where transliteration versus paraphrase decisions must be made explicitly rather than left to translator discretion. It extends the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json) and consolidates the term-level findings of 08_core_glossary.md into decision-ready form for Phase 1 Step 2 (translation memory update) and Phase 2 segment translation.
Galatians is doctrinally denser per verse than most Pauline letters — its argument runs almost entirely on a small set of contested abstract nouns (νόμος, χάρις, δικαιοσύνη, πίστις, σάρξ, ἐλευθερία). This concentration means gap and collision risks are not evenly distributed across the book; they cluster in chapters 2–5 and around the core passage (2:15-21) with an intensity the Romans baseline did not need to address to the same degree.
Full-book coverage note: All 6 chapters of Galatians were reviewed for this analysis. Chapters 1 and 6 contribute epistolary, apostolic-biography, and closing-exhortation material with comparatively fewer new lexical gaps than chapters 2–5; they are addressed in the relevant tables below rather than omitted (see especially Paul’s Apostleship terms from ch. 1 and Bearing One Another’s Burdens terms from ch. 6).
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each of the 14 curriculum doctrines: the available Mandarin term(s), the specific weakness of the available inventory, and the recommended handling strategy. “Available terms” marked [baseline] are reused verbatim from the Romans Language Package; terms marked [new] are Galatians-specific additions from 08_core_glossary.md / bible_term_registry.json.
| Doctrine | Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness of Available Inventory | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Justification by Faith | 称义 chēngyì [baseline]; 义 yì [baseline]; 算为义 suàn wéi yì [baseline]; 律法的行为 lǜfǎ de xíngwéi [new] | 义 is simultaneously a live Confucian virtue term (仁义礼智信); Mandarin has no separate lexical item for “forensic declared-righteous status” distinct from “righteous conduct.” The whole letter’s argument (2:16-21) depends on readers NOT hearing 义 as an achievable moral quality. | Retain 称义/义/算为义 exactly as baseline. Attach a mandatory clarifying note at every justification-context occurrence, escalated in Galatians relative to Romans because 2:16-21 makes the works/faith antithesis the letter’s structural hinge, not one argument among several. |
| The True Gospel versus False Gospels | 福音 fúyīn [baseline]; 别的福音 bié de fúyīn [new]; 福音的真理 fúyīn de zhēnlǐ [new] | 别的 (“different/other”) is lexically neutral in Mandarin and can be heard as “an alternative, equally valid option” — the opposite of Paul’s point in 1:6-9. 真理 risks a “one truth-path among several” (道) reading in a Buddhist/Daoist frame. | Do not rely on 别的福音 unglossed. Pair with explicit exclusivity language in surrounding text and a translator’s note at 1:6-9 clarifying categorical falsity, not comparative inferiority. |
| Paul’s Apostleship | 使徒 shǐtú [baseline]; 启示 qǐshì [new]; 基督的仆人 Jīdū de púrén [new] | 使徒 itself is low risk, but Galatians 1:1,11-24 stresses direct, unmediated divine commissioning — a claim structurally similar to lineage-transmission claims in Chinese teacher-disciple traditions (师承, 宗师认证), which could unintentionally legitimize Paul’s opponents’ appeal to human-chain authority if not fenced. | Preserve 使徒 as baseline. In 1:1,11-17 contexts, ensure the negation (“not from men, nor through man”) is rendered with equal emphatic force, not softened into a humility formula. |
| Law and Grace | 律法 lǜfǎ [baseline]; 恩典 ēndiǎn [baseline] | Both individually stable, but Galatians requires them held in structural opposition as two mutually exclusive bases of standing before God — a binary far more totalizing than Romans’ more gradual treatment. Mandarin readers with a Confucian ethical formation may instinctively seek a synthesis (“law tempered by grace”) that the letter explicitly forecloses (2:21; 5:4). | No new term needed. The gap is rhetorical/structural, not lexical: teaching material must state the either/or explicitly rather than trust the vocabulary alone to carry it. |
| Crucified with Christ | 与基督同钉十字架 yǔ Jīdū tóng dìng shízìjià [new]; 十字架 shízìjià [baseline pattern]; 为我舍己 wèi wǒ shějǐ [new] | No gap in lexical availability, but the completed-past/ongoing-union theology (2:20) has no ready Chinese devotional analogue — Buddhist/Daoist self-mortification and Confucian self-sacrifice-for-a-superior narratives are both repeatable/effortful, whereas Paul’s union is a one-time accomplished fact appropriated by faith. | Retain existing CUV phrase. Mandatory note distinguishing this from repeatable ascetic practice and from exemplary-sacrifice narratives (loyal-minister-dies-for-lord tropes). |
| The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | 约 yuē [baseline]; 应许 yìngxǔ [new]; 后裔 hòuyì [new] | 约/应许 distinction is not naturally maintained in colloquial Mandarin, where both could be loosely rendered “promise.” 后裔 is number-neutral, erasing Paul’s singular/plural grammatical argument (3:16). | Enforce 约 ≠ 应许 as two distinct, non-interchangeable technical terms throughout. Mandatory bracketed clarification at 3:16 (“that one seed,” 那一个后裔) to recover the lost singular. |
| The Law’s Purpose | 律法 lǜfǎ [baseline]; 律法的咒诅 lǜfǎ de zhòuzǔ [new]; 师傅 shīfu (guardian/tutor) [new]; 世上的小学 shìshàng de xiǎoxué [new]; 中间人 zhōngjiānrén [new] | This doctrine has the highest concentration of gap/collision terms in the letter (see §2 and §3 below). 师傅 imports a valued, often lifelong mentorship connotation opposite to the law’s temporary custodial role (3:24-25); 世上的小学 risks either a literal “elementary school” misreading or a Five-Elements (五行) collision if paraphrased as “elements.” | Treat as a cluster requiring coordinated notes (see §3, rows 3–4). No better single-word substitute exists for 师傅 or 世上的小学; retain with heavier-than-usual annotation rather than search for an alternative term. |
| Adoption and Sonship | 儿子的名分 érzi de míngfèn [baseline]; 后嗣 hòusì / 承受产业的 chéngshòu chǎnyè de [new]; 阿爸 Ābà [baseline] | Chinese inheritance vocabulary (家产, 宗族继承) is structurally tied to biological male lineage; Paul’s point in 3:28-29 (Jew/Gentile, male/female, slave/free all equally heirs) directly contradicts the cultural default the available vocabulary evokes. | Retain baseline terms. Because Galatians 4 develops adoption more fully than Romans 8 and structurally opposes it to slavery (δουλεία), add an explicit universal-scope note at every occurrence of 后嗣, not only at 3:28-29 itself. |
| Freedom in Christ | 自由 zìyóu [new]; 奴仆 / 奴役 núpú / núyì [new]; 奴仆的枷锁 núpú de jiāsuǒ [new] | 自由 in contemporary Mandarin usage is dominated by secular-political liberty/individual-rights connotations (a 20th-century loanword-adjacent political register), which can silently substitute “freedom from external constraint” for Paul’s “freedom for love and service” (5:13). | Do not treat 自由 as self-explanatory. Every major occurrence (2:4; 5:1,13) requires a note pairing freedom with its purpose clause (5:13, “not… as an opportunity for the flesh, but… serve one another”), preventing an autonomy-only reading. |
| Circumcision and the New Creation | 割礼 gēlǐ [new]; 新造的人 xīnzào de rén [new] | 割礼 is lexically unambiguous but has zero native cultural referent as a soteriologically weighted covenant sign — Chinese readers have no comparable rite carrying this stake, risking it being read as a minor ritual footnote rather than the church-dividing issue of the letter (5:4). 新造的人 is vulnerable to collision with forbidden idioms (脱胎换骨, 轮回/投胎). | Provide OT covenant-background scaffolding wherever 割礼 appears (not just glossary note but contextual teaching material). Enforce the forbidden-substitution list for 新造的人 with the same rigor as 复活. |
| Flesh versus Spirit | 肉体 ròutǐ [baseline/new, dual-sense]; 圣灵 Shènglíng [baseline]; 情欲的事 qíngyù de shì (CUV list gloss) [new] | 肉体 must carry two senses (neutral bodily existence at 2:20; moral fallen disposition at 5:13-24) with no formal marking to distinguish them — a genuine structural gap, since Mandarin has no separate lexeme for “sinful disposition” apart from “the physical body” the way σάρξ’s theological double-sense requires. | Mandatory sense-flagging at every occurrence (see Table C of 08_core_glossary.md, reproduced in §4 below). Prefer literal 肉体的行为 over CUV’s narrowing 情欲的事 in teaching contexts to preserve the full breadth of the 5:19-21 catalogue (idolatry, sorcery, enmity — not only appetite-sins). |
| Fruit of the Spirit | 圣灵所结的果子 Shènglíng suǒ jié de guǒzi [new]; nine sub-terms (仁爱, 喜乐, 和平, 忍耐, 恩慈, 良善, 信实, 温柔, 节制) [new] | Mandarin naturally individuates a list of nine nouns into nine separate, independently-cultivable virtues — directly contrary to Paul’s singular “fruit” (organic, unified) image. 仁爱 additionally collides with the Confucian virtue 仁; 信实 must be fenced against 信心. | Teaching material must state explicitly that these are one fruit with nine facets, not nine achievements, at first introduction of the list (5:22-23). Enforce Table C disambiguation for 信心/信实 without exception. |
| Faith Working through Love | 使人生发仁爱的信心 shǐ rén shēngfā rén’ài de xìnxīn [new] | This single clause (5:6) compounds three separate collision risks simultaneously (信心’s justification-faith sense, 仁爱’s Confucian-virtue sense, and the works/grace boundary itself) — the highest term-density collision point in the letter. | Treat as its own flagged unit, not decomposable into independently-checked parts. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence; note must state love is faith’s fruit, not an added merit-condition. |
| Bearing One Another’s Burdens | 重担 / 互相担当 zhòngdàn / hùxiāng dāndāng [new] | Common Chinese moral proverbs (自作自受, and the Buddhist-inflected 自业自受, “one reaps what one alone sows”) default to strictly individualized consequence-bearing, running directly counter to Paul’s mutual burden-sharing command (6:1-5). | Note the proverbial collision explicitly in teaching material for 6:1-5; distinguish this positive, freely-chosen mutual burden from the negative “yoke of slavery” (5:1) using contrastive framing. |
2. Missing Vocabulary: Genuine Lexical Gaps
These are concepts for which Mandarin — even drawing on the full CUV tradition — has no existing single term or stable compound, requiring either an extended paraphrase, a compound coinage already fixed by CUV convention, or a mandatory annotation to recover meaning that the source language’s morphology carries but Mandarin’s does not.
| Gap | Nature of the Gap | Current Solution | Residual Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singular/plural argument on “seed” (σπέρμα, 3:16) | Mandarin nouns are not obligatorily number-marked; 后裔 reads identically whether Paul means “one descendant” or “many descendants.” Paul’s entire typological argument in 3:16 depends on this number distinction in the Greek text. | 后裔 retained, with mandatory bracketed gloss (“那一个后裔,” “that one descendant”) at 3:16 specifically. | Even with the note, the argument requires active teaching intervention every time; it cannot be recovered from the translated text alone the way an English or Greek reader recovers it from grammar. |
| παιδαγωγός as a strictly temporary, subordinate custodial office (3:24-25) | No Chinese social role maps onto “a supervisory guardian assigned to a freeborn child specifically until legal maturity, then formally and permanently discharged.” Available candidates (师傅, 监护人) all default to either lifelong-mentor or modern-legal-guardian connotations, neither of which is designed to expire. | Retain CUV’s 师傅 with mandatory temporariness note. | The connotation gap is deep enough that even a well-placed note risks losing to the reader’s stronger cultural intuition about what a 师傅 relationship is (durable, honorific, often lifelong). |
| στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου as “rudimentary/infantile stage of religious existence” (4:3,9) | No Chinese term captures “an immature developmental stage of religious life,” applicable equally to Torah-observance and pagan idol-worship, without either sounding like literal schooling (小学) or invoking a rival cosmological system (五行, if rendered as “elements”). | Retain CUV’s 世上的小学 with a dual-warning note (against both literalism and Five-Elements collision). | This is the single hardest true lexical gap in the letter — no available Mandarin term threads between the two failure modes cleanly; ongoing native-speaker testing recommended in Phase 2. |
| δικαιοσύνη as a purely forensic (declared, not achieved) status distinct from virtuous conduct | Not a missing word so much as a missing distinction: Mandarin’s 义 does not natively fork into “forensic standing” vs. “ethical virtue” the way the theological argument requires. | 义/称义/算为义 retained per baseline, escalated annotation. | Structural, not solvable by vocabulary choice alone; addressed at the doctrinal-teaching level, not the term level. |
| ἐξαγοράζω as costly divine self-initiated “buy-back” (3:13; 4:5) | Mandarin 救赎/赎出 exist and are usable, but the commercial buy-back image (a market transaction) has a live folk-religious analogue (ritual buy-back of a soul or fated misfortune performed by the family) that the biblical text does not intend to invoke, yet the vocabulary cannot avoid resonating with. | Retain 救赎, mandatory note that God, not the sinner or family, is the initiating and paying party. | Medium residual risk; not a true lexical gap (a term exists) but flagged here because the directionality of the transaction (who pays whom) is not recoverable from the term alone. |
3. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing
These are cases where adequate Mandarin vocabulary exists but sits inside a semantic neighborhood already densely occupied by Confucian, Buddhist, or Daoist/folk-religious concepts, such that the term will be misread by default unless actively fenced off from its neighbors.
| Mandarin Term | Doctrine | Colliding Neighbor(s) | Source Tradition | Fencing Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 义 (yì) | Justification by Faith | 义 as one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) | Confucianism | Mandatory distinguishing note at every justification-context occurrence (per baseline, escalated for Galatians); never let 义 stand unglossed in 2:15-21, 3:6-24, 5:5. |
| 仁爱 (rén’ài) | Fruit of the Spirit; Faith Working through Love | 仁 as the foremost Confucian virtue, self-cultivated through moral discipline | Confucianism | Note at 5:6 and 5:22 that this is Spirit-produced fruit flowing from faith, not a self-cultivated Confucian virtue achieved by moral effort. |
| 成圣 (chéngshèng) | Sanctification (undergirding Flesh/Spirit, Fruit of Spirit) | Neo-Confucian technical term for self-cultivation into sagehood (Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming) | Neo-Confucianism | Retain baseline note; escalate specifically around Galatians 5-6’s flesh/Spirit and works/fruit contrasts, where the self-effort-vs-Spirit-work distinction is the passage’s explicit point. |
| 恩典 (ēndiǎn) | Law and Grace; Grace | 功德/阴德, merit-ledger accounting | Chinese folk Buddhism | Retain baseline’s absolute forbidden-substitution rule; Galatians 2:21/5:4 make this collision maximally load-bearing since the letter treats grace and merit as strictly exclusive alternatives. |
| 自由 (zìyóu) | Freedom in Christ | Secular-political liberty / individual autonomy (modern reform-era usage) | Modern secular/political discourse | Pair every doctrinal occurrence with the 5:13 purpose clause (freedom FOR love/service) to prevent an autonomy-only reading. |
| 咒诅 (zhòuzǔ) | True Gospel vs. False Gospels; Law’s Purpose | Folk ritual curses/hexes (符咒, 下咒, 诅咒仪式) performed by ritual specialists | Chinese folk religion | Note at every occurrence (1:8-9; 3:10,13) that this is God’s own judicial pronouncement, not a magically efficacious hex operating independent of, or coercing, divine will. |
| 救赎 (jiùshú) | Law’s Purpose; Redemption | Ritual “buying back” of a soul/fate performed by family on behalf of the deceased or unfortunate | Folk Daoist/Buddhist ritual practice | Note that God is both initiator and payer; the sinner/family does not perform or fund this transaction. |
| 撒种 / 收割 (sāzhǒng / shōugē) | Fruit of the Spirit; Sow/Reap | 种因得果 (“sow a cause, reap a fruit”), the standard popular articulation of impersonal karmic causation | Chinese Buddhist-derived folk proverb | Note at 6:7-8 that this operates under a personal moral Governor (God) who actively judges, not a self-operating impersonal cosmic law. |
| 重担/互相担当 (zhòngdàn/hùxiāng dāndāng) | Bearing One Another’s Burdens | 自作自受 / 自业自受 (“one reaps what one alone sows”), individualized-consequence proverbs | General Chinese proverb / Buddhist-inflected folk ethics | Note at 6:1-5 that Paul commands MUTUAL burden-sharing, directly counter to the individualized-consequence default. |
| 师傅 (shīfu) | The Law’s Purpose (guardian/tutor) | Valued, often lifelong master-craftsman or martial-arts mentor relationship | General Chinese social/cultural convention | Mandatory temporariness note at every occurrence (3:24-25): this guardianship is designed to expire, unlike a 师傅 relationship’s typical durability. |
| 节制 (jiézhì) | Fruit of the Spirit (self-control) | 修炼, ascetic self-discipline achieved through technique | Daoist/Buddhist/qigong practice | Note that this is Spirit-enabled, not self-generated through technique or discipline. |
| 真理 (zhēnlǐ), within 福音的真理 | True Gospel vs. False Gospels | ”One truth/path among several” (道), pluralistic-paths framing | Buddhist/Daoist religious pluralism | Context must state exclusivity explicitly; do not let 真理 stand as if compatible with a many-paths framework. |
| 割礼 (gēlǐ) | Circumcision and the New Creation | No colliding neighbor per se, but an absent cultural referent for covenant-sign weight | N/A (gap-adjacent, listed here for completeness) | Provide explicit OT covenant-background scaffolding; do not assume the term alone conveys stakes. |
4. Context-Sensitive Terms Requiring Sense-Flagging (Not Single-Neighborhood Collisions)
A distinct category from §3: these terms are not colliding with an external tradition so much as carrying two internally distinct senses within Galatians itself, both of which map to Mandarin terms that must not be conflated. (Full detail retained in 08_core_glossary.md Table C; summarized here for gap-analysis completeness.)
| Term | Sense A → Mandarin | Sense B → Mandarin | Passages |
|---|---|---|---|
| πίστις (pistis) | Saving faith → 信心 | Spirit-produced faithfulness (fruit) → 信实 | 2:16;3:6-26 (A) vs. 5:22 (B) |
| σάρξ (sarx) | Neutral bodily existence → 肉体 | Sin-inclined disposition → 肉体 (flagged) | 2:20 (A) vs. 5:13-24; 6:8 (B) |
| φύσις (physis) | Birth-status → 生来 | Essential nature → 本来 | 2:15 (A) vs. 4:8 (B) |
| δοῦλος (doulos) | Positive self-designation → 基督的仆人 | Negative bondage → 奴仆/奴役 | 1:10 (A) vs. 3:23-4:9; 4:22-31; 5:1 (B) |
Gap note: Mandarin has no morphological device (unlike, e.g., case or article variation in some source languages) to mark these sense-shifts automatically; every occurrence requires a manual context flag in the segment cache, not a one-time glossary decision.
5. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Decision | Rendering | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jesus | Transliterate | 耶稣 (Yēsū) | Established CUV form; universal across Chinese Bible traditions. |
| Christ / Messiah | Transliterate | 基督 (Jīdū) | CUV standard; direct transliteration 弥赛亚 exists but is far less used; must never be confused with 弥勒 (Maitreya). |
| Paul | Transliterate | 保罗 (Bǎoluó) | Established CUV form; no theological content requiring paraphrase. |
| Abraham | Transliterate | 亚伯拉罕 (Yàbólāhǎn) | Established CUV form. |
| Barnabas, Peter/Cephas, Titus, Antioch, Jerusalem, Arabia, Damascus, Sinai, Hagar, Sarah, Ishmael, Isaac | Transliterate | 巴拿巴, 彼得/矶法, 提多, 安提阿, 耶路撒冷, 阿拉伯, 大马士革, 西奈, 夏甲, 撒拉, 以实玛利, 以撒 | Established CUV proper-name forms; no viable or needed paraphrase. |
| Abba | Transliterate (retain alongside 父) | 阿爸 (Ābà) | Preserves Aramaic filial intimacy per baseline (Romans 8:15) cross-document consistency rule; a pure-Mandarin paraphrase would lose the untranslated-intimacy effect Paul himself preserves in Greek. |
| Amen, Hallelujah | Transliterate | 阿们 (āmen), 哈利路亚 (hālìlùyà) | Established liturgical transliterations; not applicable to doctrinal-content terms but listed for completeness (closing benediction, 6:18). |
| Works of the law (ἔργα νόμου) | Paraphrase (compound) | 律法的行为 | No single Mandarin word exists; compound construction is CUV-consistent and transparent. Transliteration is not applicable to a Greek noun phrase with no proper-noun character. |
| Elemental things of the world (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου) | Paraphrase, retain CUV coinage | 世上的小学 | Rejected literal transliteration/loan-coinage of “stoicheia” as meaningless to a Mandarin reader; rejected direct-translation “elements” (元素) due to Five-Elements (五行) collision; retained CUV’s existing paraphrase despite its own residual risk (see §2), because no better paraphrase candidate was identified. |
| Guardian/tutor (παιδαγωγός) | Paraphrase, retain CUV term | 师傅 | Transliteration inapplicable (common noun, not proper noun); retained despite connotation mismatch because no alternative Chinese social role maps more closely, and introducing a novel coinage risks reducing intelligibility further. Mandatory annotation compensates. |
| New creation (καινὴ κτίσις) | Paraphrase | 新造的人 | Established Chinese Christian coinage; no transliteration possible for a descriptive theological phrase. Explicitly fenced against forbidden idioms (脱胎换骨, 轮回/投胎). |
| Seed/offspring (σπέρμα) | Paraphrase | 后裔 | No transliteration applicable; the residual number-ambiguity gap is handled by annotation, not by an alternative term (no Mandarin term reintroduces number-marking). |
| Redemption (ἐξαγοράζω) | Paraphrase | 救赎 / 赎出 | Established term; transliteration inapplicable to a verb of this kind. |
| Circumcision (περιτομή) | Paraphrase (already lexicalized) | 割礼 | Fully lexicalized in Mandarin with no ambiguity at the word level; the risk identified in this analysis is cultural-weight, not lexical availability, so no transliteration question arises. |
| Faith working through love (πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη) | Paraphrase (extended clause) | 使人生发仁爱的信心 | A five-word Greek phrase requiring a full clause in Mandarin; CUV’s existing rendering retained rather than inventing a novel compound, to preserve cross-document consistency with any prior Chinese Bible study material a learner may already know. |
General rule for this curriculum: transliteration is reserved for proper nouns and the single fixed liturgical exception of 阿爸/Abba (justified by direct scriptural precedent for retaining the untranslated form). All doctrinal common-noun and noun-phrase terms are handled by paraphrase, compound-construction, or retention of existing CUV coinages — never by minting a new transliterated loanword, which would produce an opaque term with no entry point into the target culture’s existing religious vocabulary (and thus no collision risk to fence, but also no comprehensibility).
6. Ranked List of Galatians’ Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined severity of (a) doctrinal centrality to Galatians’ argument, (b) strength of the competing Mandarin semantic neighbor, and (c) likelihood that a translator or reader defaults to the wrong sense without active intervention.
| Rank | Ambiguity | Passage(s) | Risk Tier | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 义/称义 read as Confucian achieved virtue rather than forensic declared status | 2:15-21; 3:6-24; 5:5 | Critical | This is the core passage’s central term, and the collision (仁义礼智信) is a live, actively-taught ethical framework for most Mandarin readers, not a dormant historical association — the single highest-stakes ambiguity in the letter. |
| 2 | 仁爱/信心 in “faith working through love” (5:6) collapsing into a second merit-condition | 5:6 | Critical | Uniquely compounds three separate collision risks in one clause; a mistranslation here could reopen the entire faith-vs-works question the letter exists to close. |
| 3 | 圣灵所结的果子 read as nine separately achievable virtues rather than one organic fruit | 5:22-23 | Critical | Mandarin’s natural tendency to individuate a list works directly against Paul’s grammatical singular (“fruit,” not “fruits”), silently reintroducing self-cultivation logic. |
| 4 | 肉体 sense-ambiguity (neutral body vs. sin-disposition) with no formal Mandarin marker | 2:20 vs. 5:13-24; 6:8 | Critical | No morphological cue distinguishes the two senses; misreading 2:20 as body-denial or 5:13-24 as mere appetite-control both distort core Christology or ethics. |
| 5 | 别的福音 read as “an alternative, still-valid gospel” rather than categorically false | 1:6-9 | Critical | Mandarin’s neutral 别的 does not itself carry the double-anathema force of the Greek ἕτερον/ἄλλο distinction Paul exploits; without intervention the passage’s severity is silently softened. |
| 6 | 咒诅 read through folk-magic hex/ritual-curse framework | 1:8-9; 3:10,13 | Critical | Sits beside an active, practiced folk-religious vocabulary (符咒, 诅咒仪式), risking the text being read as affirming ritual-curse efficacy rather than divine judicial pronouncement. |
| 7 | Singular/plural loss in 后裔 (“seed”) erasing Paul’s grammatical argument | 3:16 | Critical | The argument is untranslatable without annotation; silent loss here removes an entire step of Paul’s covenant-theology reasoning with no visible trace that anything is missing. |
| 8 | 自由 defaulting to secular-political autonomy rather than freedom-for-love | 2:4; 5:1,13 | High | Modern Mandarin’s dominant register for this word is drawn from a different (political/individual-rights) discourse entirely; the theological sense requires active re-anchoring at every occurrence. |
| 9 | 师傅 (guardian/tutor) importing durable-mentor connotations opposite to the law’s designed expiration | 3:24-25 | High | Directly inverts Paul’s point (the law’s authority is temporary and terminates), and no better Mandarin term exists to avoid the mismatch. |
| 10 | 世上的小学 read literally as schooling or paraphrased into a Five-Elements collision | 4:3,9 | High | The hardest pure lexical gap in the letter; both the retained term and its most likely alternative rendering carry distinct failure modes. |
| 11 | 割礼’s covenant-sign weight underestimated due to absent cultural referent | 2:3-14; 5:2-11; 6:12-15 | High | Risk is not mistranslation but under-teaching: the term is lexically clear but its stakes (“falling from grace,” 5:4) require scaffolding the term alone cannot supply. |
| 12 | 撒种/收割 read as impersonal karmic proverb (种因得果) rather than personal-God moral accountability | 6:7-8 | High | A near-exact surface match to a widely known folk-Buddhist proverb makes this a high-probability default misreading absent explicit correction. |
| 13 | 重担/互相担当 read against individualized-consequence proverbs (自作自受) | 6:1-5 | High | Common ethical proverbs run in the opposite direction of Paul’s explicit mutuality command; without contrast-framing, readers may resolve the tension in favor of the (wrong) familiar proverb. |
| 14 | 救赎’s commercial “buy-back” image read as a ritual transaction the sinner/family performs | 3:13; 4:5 | High | Directionality of who acts and who pays is not recoverable from the term itself; risk is theological inversion of agency, not lack of comprehension. |
| 15 | 中间人 conflated with 中保 (Christ’s unique mediatorial office) | 3:19-20 | Medium | Lower stakes than the above because the surrounding argument (Moses vs. the direct Abrahamic promise) provides some self-correcting context, but consistent terminological separation must still be enforced. |
7. Handoff Notes for Phase 1 Step 2 (Translation Memory Update)
- All [new] terms in §1 and all entries in
08_core_glossary.mdSection B/C/D must be merged into an updatedtranslation_memory.json(version increment) before Phase 2 begins. - Every Rank 1–7 ambiguity in §6 (all Critical tier) requires a mandatory translator-note template pre-drafted for Phase 2 segment processing, not left to per-segment improvisation.
- The two genuine unresolved lexical gaps flagged in §2 (παιδαγωγός’s temporariness; στοιχεῖα’s dual literal/cosmological risk) should be flagged for native-speaker field testing during Phase 2 pilot segments, since no confident single-term solution was identified in this analysis.
- §4’s sense-flagging obligations (πίστις, σάρξ, φύσις, δοῦλος) must be implemented as a structural field in the segment cache schema (an explicit “active sense” tag per occurrence), not relied upon as translator memory alone.
This document extends, and must never contradict, the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. See 08_core_glossary.md for the full term inventory and doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions for review-routing definitions referenced throughout.
