Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Peter (English → Mandarin)
Scope and Method
This document analyzes the entire book of 1 Peter (5 chapters) in the original Koine Greek for the purpose of building Mandarin translation requirements for the 1 Peter curriculum. It:
- Gives verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage, 1 Peter 1:3-9, with every load-bearing term (original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 1 Peter, and destination-language rendering risk).
- Gives chapter-by-chapter treatment of the whole book (chapters 1–5), covering every chapter’s load-bearing theological terms with the same fields.
- Reuses the baseline Romans
translation_memory.jsonrendering exactly wherever a term already appears there (e.g. 神, 主, 耶稣基督, 恩典, 信心, 救恩, 圣洁, 荣耀, 福音, 成圣, 拣选, 呼召/蒙召的, 平安, 神的大能, 复活, 团契, 属灵恩赐, 罪, 义, 因信而生的顺服, 使徒, 劝勉). - Flags every NEW term (not present in the Romans baseline) with a proposed Mandarin rendering and risk tier, following the same Critical/High/Medium/Low convention as
doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Risk tiers use the baseline definitions:
- Critical: mistranslation destroys/alters essential doctrine — human theologian review required every occurrence.
- High: significant syncretism/confusion risk — human theologian review required.
- Medium: reduces clarity, preserves core meaning — native speaker review recommended.
- Low: minor imprecision — automated review sufficient.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 1 Peter 1:3-9 (Verse-by-Verse)
1 Peter 1:3
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Θεός / Πατήρ / Κύριος / Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | Theos / Patēr / Kyrios / Iēsous Christos | God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ | — | “God,” “Father,” “Lord,” “Jesus Christ” | Trinitarian address opening a benediction; Father is specifically Father of Christ, and by extension of believers (see 1:17) | 神 / 父 / 主 / 耶稣基督 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM renderings exactly (神, 父, 主, 耶稣基督). No deviation permitted. |
| ἔλεος | eleos | pity, compassion shown to one in need | mercy, compassion, clemency | ”mercy,” “compassion” | God’s compassionate disposition toward sinners in need, the ground of regeneration (distinct from, but paired with, 恩典/grace) | 怜悯 (liánmǐn) | Medium — New term (not in Romans baseline). 怜悯 is a standard, low-collision CUV term, but teaching should clarify it is not appeasable ancestral/deity pity earned by ritual devotion; it flows from God’s character, not human petition-and-response bargaining common in folk temple practice. |
| ἀναγεννήσας (< ἀναγεννάω) | anagennēsas | having caused to be born again / regenerated | to beget again, cause a new spiritual birth | ”caused us to be born again,” “given us new birth,” “regenerated” | A one-time, decisive divine act creating new spiritual life in the believer, the basis of “living hope” | 重生 (chóngshēng) | Critical — 重生 is the established Chinese Christian rendering, but it sits dangerously close to reincarnation/rebirth vocabulary (轮回 lúnhuí, 投胎 tóutāi — already forbidden under baseline “resurrection”). MUST be taught explicitly as a single, non-repeatable spiritual new-birth given by God to a living person in this life, NOT a rebirth into another body/life cycle. Every occurrence requires a translator note. |
| ἐλπὶς ζῶσα | elpis zōsa | a hope that is living/alive | hope; expectation of good; (adj.) living, alive, vigorous | ”living hope,” “lively hope,” “vibrant hope” | Confident, sure expectation grounded in Christ’s resurrection, contrasted with hope that “dies” or proves empty | 活泼的盼望 (huópō de pànwàng) | High — New term. 盼望 (hope) alone risks reading as a wish or vague optimism; “living” (活泼) must be retained to distinguish from fatalistic resignation (命运/天意-type outlooks) and from hope that is inert or merely aspirational. Central to the curriculum doctrine “The Living Hope of the Resurrection.” |
| ἀνάστασις … ἐκ νεκρῶν | anastasis ek nekrōn | a standing-up again, from among the dead | resurrection; rising | ”resurrection from the dead” | Christ’s own bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection — the objective ground of the believer’s living hope | 复活 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM rendering exactly (复活). NEVER 轮回/投胎/还魂 (see baseline forbidden list). |
1 Peter 1:4
Greek: εἰς κληρονομίαν ἄφθαρτον καὶ ἀμίαντον καὶ ἀμάραντον, τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κληρονομία | klēronomia | inheritance, portion received by lot/heirship | inheritance, possession, allotted portion | ”inheritance,” “heritage” | The believer’s future eschatological inheritance secured in Christ, received as a son/heir (cf. Romans 8 adoption doctrine) | 基业 (jīyè) | High — New term (established CUV rendering). Must be distinguished from Chinese clan/family inheritance (家产, 祖产) transmitted through male lineage and ancestor-line continuity (cf. baseline note on 过继 under “adoption”); this inheritance is granted by grace to all in Christ, not preserved through bloodline or ancestral ritual obligation. |
| ἄφθαρτος / ἀμίαντος / ἀμάραντος | aphthartos / amiantos / amarantos | not-corruptible / not-defiled / not-fading | imperishable; undefiled; unfading (of flowers) | “imperishable, undefiled, unfading” | Triple description of the eschatological inheritance’s permanence and purity, contrasted with worldly wealth (cf. 1:18, 1:23) | 不能朽坏、不能玷污、不能衰残 | Medium — Descriptive triad rather than single technical terms; low collision risk, but “imperishable” here should not be rendered with vocabulary suggesting Daoist immortality-cultivation (不朽 in the sense of an achieved immortal state through practice) — the imperishability is a divine gift kept “in heaven,” not a state attained by discipline. |
| τετηρημένην … ἐν οὐρανοῖς | tetērēmenēn en ouranois | having been kept/reserved in the heavens | to guard, keep, reserve | ”reserved in heaven,” “kept in heaven” | God himself actively preserves the inheritance; security rests in God, not in the believer’s effort | 存留在天上 | Low — Standard construction; minor risk if rendered as a passive location without conveying active divine safekeeping. |
1 Peter 1:5
Greek: τοὺς ἐν δυνάμει Θεοῦ φρουρουμένους διὰ πίστεως εἰς σωτηρίαν ἑτοίμην ἀποκαλυφθῆναι ἐν καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δύναμις Θεοῦ | dynamis theou | power of God | might, strength, ability | ”power of God” | God’s active, sustaining power guards believers until the inheritance is revealed | 神的大能 | High — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. NEVER 气/法力 (see baseline forbidden list). |
| φρουρουμένους (< φρουρέω) | phrouroumenous | being guarded (military-garrison image) | to guard, protect as a garrison | ”kept,” “guarded,” “shielded” | Believers are actively, continuously protected by God’s power through the instrumentality of faith — security is God’s ongoing act, not a static past event | 保守 (bǎoshǒu) | Medium — New term. Should not be reduced to generic “protection” language that could be read as a talisman/amulet-style protective blessing (cf. baseline 平安符 note under “peace”); this guarding is God’s personal, ongoing action tied to the believer’s faith relationship with him. |
| πίστις | pistis | trust, faith | trust, faith, faithfulness, belief-system | ”faith,” “through faith” | The means through which God’s guarding power operates — trust in Christ, not a magical channel | 信心 | High — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | salvation, deliverance | rescue, deliverance, salvation, well-being | ”salvation” | Future, consummated salvation to be fully revealed at the end — continuous with, not separate from, present salvation | 救恩 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. NEVER 解脱/超度 (see baseline forbidden list). |
| ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (< ἀποκαλύπτω) | apokalyphthēnai | to be revealed/unveiled | to uncover, disclose, reveal | ”to be revealed,” “will be revealed” | The eschatological unveiling of the salvation already secured — not a newly-discovered secret teaching (contrast esoteric revelation traditions) | 显现 / 显明 | Medium — New term. Distinguish from esoteric “revelation” traditions (e.g. Daoist inner-alchemy revelation, fortune-telling insight); this is God’s own disclosure of an already-accomplished salvation, on his timetable. |
| καιρὸς ἔσχατος | kairos eschatos | the last/final appointed time | the end time, last days | ”the last time,” “the last days” | The eschatological consummation at Christ’s return | 末世 (mòshì) | Medium — Standard eschatological term; low collision risk but should be distinguished from cyclical-decline “end of an age” narratives in Chinese historiography (cf. baseline note on 治乱循环 under “fulfillment of prophecy”) — this is a single, linear terminus, not a recurring dynastic cycle-ending. |
1 Peter 1:6
Greek: ἐν ᾧ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὀλίγον ἄρτι εἰ δέον ἐστὶν λυπηθέντες ἐν ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαλλιάω | agalliaō | to exult, leap for joy | to rejoice greatly, exult | ”rejoice greatly,” “greatly rejoice” | Exuberant joy grounded in the certainty of the inheritance, present even amid trials | 欢喜/喜乐 | Low — Standard vocabulary; ensure intensity (“greatly rejoice”) is not flattened to mild pleasantness. |
| λυπηθέντες (< λυπέω) | lypētheis | having been grieved | to grieve, be distressed | ”grieved,” “distressed” | Real, acknowledged sorrow under trial — joy and grief coexist, not denial of suffering | 忧愁 (yōuchóu) | Low — Standard term. |
| ποικίλοι πειρασμοί | poikiloi peirasmoi | various/manifold trials | trials, tests; (elsewhere) temptations to sin | ”various trials,” “manifold trials,” “all kinds of testing” | Trials that test and refine genuine faith (not primarily enticements to sin, though πειρασμός can carry that sense elsewhere in the NT) | 百般的试炼 (bǎibān de shìliàn) | Medium — New term. CUV distinguishes 试炼 (trial/testing, this sense) from 试探 (temptation to sin). Must use 试炼 here to avoid implying these hardships are primarily moral temptations rather than faith-refining hardships — foundational to the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake.” |
1 Peter 1:7
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοκίμιον τῆς πίστεως | dokimion tēs pisteōs | the tested-genuineness of your faith | the proven/tested character (of faith) | “the genuineness of your faith,” “your faith, tested” | Trials function as a proving process that demonstrates faith’s authenticity, not a punitive ordeal or karmic penance | 信心的真实(经过考验) | Medium — New term. Must be paired carefully with δοκιμαζομένου (fire-tested) below without implying faith is earned or improved by the ordeal — it is proven, not produced, by trial. |
| χρυσίον … διὰ πυρὸς δοκιμαζομένου | chrysion dia pyros dokimazomenou | gold being tested/refined through fire | to test, prove, refine (of metals) by fire | ”gold tested by fire,” “gold refined by fire” | Metallurgical refining metaphor: trials purify and prove faith’s genuine value, which outlasts and outweighs perishable wealth | (被)火试炼的金子 / 用火炼 | Medium — New term. The refining-by-fire image risks resonance with Daoist inner-alchemy (内丹/炼丹) practices of self-refinement toward immortality through technique. Teaching must clarify: God, not the believer’s own technique, is the refiner; the fire is trial/suffering, not a ritual practice performed by the person. |
| ἔπαινος / δόξα / τιμή | epainos / doxa / timē | praise / glory / honor | commendation; radiant honor; value/honor | ”praise, glory, and honor” | The threefold commendation faith receives at Christ’s return — glory belongs first to God, but faith’s proven genuineness is publicly honored | 称赞、荣耀、尊贵 | High (for δόξα) / Medium (for the others) — 荣耀 MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. 尊贵/称赞 are new low-medium risk terms; avoid collapsing 尊贵 into 面子 (“face”/social reputation), per baseline caution under “glory.” |
| ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | apokalypsis Iēsou Christou | the revelation/unveiling of Jesus Christ | unveiling, disclosure; (technical) the Second Coming | ”the revelation of Jesus Christ,” “when Jesus Christ is revealed,” “his appearing” | Christ’s future return, the moment when hidden realities (including faith’s true worth) are made publicly manifest | 耶稣基督显现的时候 | High — New term (eschatological). Must not be confused with a bodhisattva’s or deity’s repeatable manifestation (化身/下凡, forbidden under baseline “incarnation”) — this is Christ’s own singular, historical return, the same person who already came once. |
1 Peter 1:8
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαπάω | agapaō | to love (self-giving, willed love) | to love, cherish, be devoted to | ”you love,” “love him” | Personal love and devotion directed at the unseen Christ — relational, not merely doctrinal assent | 爱 (ài) | Medium — New foundational term (not explicit in Romans TM, though presumed throughout). No major folk-religion collision, but must be distinguished from generic filial or romantic 爱 by keeping Christ as the explicit object in translation and footnoting. |
| πιστεύω | pisteuō | to believe, to trust | to believe, have faith in, entrust oneself to | ”believing,” “you believe” | The verb form of 信心/faith — active trust in the unseen Christ | 信 (xìn) | High — Verb form of the baseline “faith” (信心) term; must retain the same personal-trust-in-Christ sense, not generic “believing that something is true.” |
| χαρὰ ἀνεκλαλήτος καὶ δεδοξασμένη | chara aneklalētos kai dedoxasmenē | joy unable-to-be-spoken and glorified | inexpressible, glorified/radiant joy | ”joy inexpressible and full of glory,” “inexpressible and glorious joy” | Joy so profound it exceeds ordinary language, marked by a share in God’s own glory | 说不出来、满有荣光的喜乐 | Medium — New compound term; 荣光 here echoes 荣耀 (baseline glory term) and should be handled consistently with it. |
1 Peter 1:9
Greek: κομιζόμενοι τὸ τέλος τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν, σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κομιζόμενοι (< κομίζομαι) | komizomenoi | obtaining/receiving for oneself | to receive, obtain, carry off (a reward) | “obtaining,” “receiving,” “as you receive” | Present, ongoing reception — believers are already receiving the outcome of their faith, not merely awaiting it | 得着 (dézhe) | Low — Standard term. |
| τέλος τῆς πίστεως | telos tēs pisteōs | the end/goal/outcome of faith | end, goal, completion, outcome | ”the outcome of your faith,” “the goal of your faith” | The intended result toward which faith has always been aimed: full salvation | 信心的果效/结局 | Medium — New term; should not be rendered as if faith itself earns a reward through effort (avoid merit-ledger overtones, cf. 功德 caution under baseline “grace”). |
| σωτηρία ψυχῶν | sōtēria psychōn | salvation of souls | deliverance, rescue (of) the soul/self/life | ”the salvation of your souls” | Full and final salvation, encompassing the whole person | 灵魂的救恩 | Critical for 救恩 (MUST reuse baseline exactly) / High for ψυχή below. |
| ψυχή | psychē | soul, life, self | soul; life; the whole inner person; (elsewhere) “life” in the sense of physical existence | ”soul,” “life,” “self” | The whole person as the object of God’s saving work, received in this life | 灵魂 (línghún) | High — New term. In Chinese folk religion 灵魂 overlaps with ancestral-spirit concepts (魂魄, 祖灵 — the latter already forbidden under baseline “Holy Spirit”) and beliefs about a soul’s post-mortem wandering or need for ritual guidance (cf. 超度). Must be taught as the whole inner person that God saves in this life through faith, not a ghost-like remnant requiring ritual intervention after death. |
PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 (remainder: vv. 1-2, 10-25)
Verses 3-9 are treated above as the core passage. The rest of chapter 1 introduces the following load-bearing terms not yet covered:
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος (1:1) | apostolos | one sent out | apostle, authorized envoy | ”apostle” | Peter’s authorized, delegated apostolic office | 使徒 | Low — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. |
| ἐκλεκτός (1:1) | eklektos | chosen out, selected | elect, chosen | ”elect,” “chosen” | Believers as personally, graciously chosen by God (cf. Romans “election” doctrine) | 蒙拣选的 | High — Reuse baseline 拣选 (election) root; render as 蒙拣选的 for the adjective. Must not shade into impersonal fate/destiny language (cf. baseline caution on 天命/命运/缘分). |
| παρεπίδημοι / πάροικοι (1:1; 1:17; 2:11) | parepidēmoi / paroikoi | temporary residents / resident aliens | sojourners, foreigners, exiles, resident aliens | ”sojourners,” “exiles,” “pilgrims,” “strangers” | Believers’ present social-spiritual identity: citizens of heaven temporarily dwelling among an alien society, not fully at home in the present world order | 客旅、寄居的 (kèlǚ, jìjū de) | Medium — New term, foundational to 1 Peter’s identity theology. Distinguish from a this-worldly diaspora/displaced-persons reading; the “exile” is theological (not-fully-at-home in a fallen world order) rather than merely ethnic or political displacement. |
| διασπορά (1:1) | diaspora | scattering, dispersion | dispersion (of Jews outside Israel; here applied to God’s scattered elect people generally) | “the Dispersion,” “scattered” | The elect scattered throughout the Roman provinces, echoing Israel’s historic diaspora | 分散 / 散居各地 | Medium — Requires OT background note; do not let readers assume this means only ethnic-Jewish dispersion, since Peter applies it typologically to the whole scattered church. |
| πρόγνωσις Θεοῦ πατρός (1:2) | prognōsis theou patros | foreknowledge of God the Father | foreknowledge, foreordained knowledge | ”foreknowledge,” “chosen according to the foreknowledge of” | God’s sovereign, prior determination in election — personal and purposive, not impersonal fate | 预知 (yùzhī) | High — New term, tightly linked to baseline “election” (拣选) and “providence” (神的护理) cautions. NEVER let this shade into 天命/命运; God’s foreknowledge is relational foreordination, not impersonal cosmic destiny. |
| ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος (1:2) | hagiasmos pneumatos | sanctification of/by the Spirit | the Spirit’s sanctifying work | ”the sanctifying work of the Spirit,” “sanctification of the Spirit” | The Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work as part of the believer’s election (parallel to Romans sanctification doctrine) | 圣灵的成圣工作 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline 成圣 (sanctification) and 圣灵 (Holy Spirit) exactly. |
| ῥαντισμὸς αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:2) | rhantismos haimatos Iēsou Christou | sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ | ritual sprinkling (Exodus/Sinai covenant-ratification imagery) | “sprinkling with his blood,” “for obedience… and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ” | Covenant-ratification imagery (Exodus 24) applied to Christ’s blood, marking believers as covenant members | 用耶稣基督的血所洒 | High — New term. Must be distinguished from Chinese folk/ancestral blood-oath rituals (歃血为盟) and from ancestor-worship blood offerings; this is a one-time covenantal application of Christ’s own sacrificial blood, requiring OT sacrificial-system background teaching. |
| χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη (1:2) | charis kai eirēnē | grace and peace | — | “grace and peace” | Standard apostolic greeting-blessing | 恩典、平安 | Critical/Medium — MUST reuse baseline renderings exactly. |
| προφῆται (1:10-12) | prophētai | prophets | God’s spokespersons | ”prophets” | OT prophets who searched out and foretold the grace/suffering/glory now fulfilled in Christ | 先知 | Low — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. |
| παθήματα … εἰς Χριστόν, καὶ τὰς μετὰ ταῦτα δόξας (1:11) | pathēmata eis Christon, doxas | the sufferings for Christ, and the glories after these | sufferings; glories (plural) | “the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow” | The Spirit of Christ, active in the OT prophets, foretold both Messiah’s sufferings and subsequent glory — foundational for the curriculum doctrine “Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering” | 基督的苦难和后来的荣耀 | Critical — New key term (πάθημα, “suffering[s]”); recurs throughout 1 Peter (2:21, 3:18, 4:1, 4:13, 5:1, 5:9-10) as one of the book’s central words. Render consistently as 苦难 (kǔnàn) throughout the book. Must not be softened or minimized (per baseline doctrinal-preservation rule against softening doctrinal statements). |
| ἄγγελοι (1:12) | angeloi | angels | messengers; heavenly beings | ”angels” | Angels themselves long to look into the realities of the gospel now revealed | 天使 (tiānshǐ) | Low — Standard, established Chinese Christian term; low collision risk. |
| ἀναστροφή (1:15, 1:18; recurring through the book) | anastrophē | manner of life, conduct, way of turning-about | conduct, behavior, way of life | ”conduct,” “manner of life,” “behavior” | The observable, everyday pattern of a believer’s life, meant to be holy — central to the curriculum doctrine “Holiness in Conduct” | 行为 (xíngwéi) | Medium — New term, recurs through the book (esp. 2:12, 3:1-2, 3:16). Track consistently. |
| ἐλπίζω / ἐλπίς εἰς Θεόν (1:13, 1:21) | elpizō / elpis eis theon | to hope / hope directed toward God | to hope, expect; hope (noun), object-specified | ”set your hope,” “hope… in God” | Hope’s proper object is God himself (through Christ), not favorable circumstances | 盼望 | High — Reuse root of “living hope” (活泼的盼望) established in 1:3; keep 盼望 consistent across the book. |
| τέκνα ὑπακοῆς (1:14) | tekna hypakoēs | children of obedience | idiom: obedient children | ”obedient children,” “as obedient children” | Believers’ new identity as those characterized by obedience flowing from new birth, not by their former ignorance | 顺命的儿女 | High — Related to, but distinct from, baseline “obedience of faith” (因信而生的顺服). Track both distinctly: this is a status/identity idiom (“children characterized by obedience”), not the specific Romans 1:5/16:26 phrase. |
| ἅγιος / ἁγιωσύνη (1:15-16) | hagios | holy | set apart, morally pure | ”holy,” “be holy” | Direct quotation of Leviticus (“Be holy, for I am holy”) applied to the whole of conduct | 圣洁 | High — MUST reuse baseline Romans TM exactly. Avoid 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual purity) per baseline caution. |
| φόβος (1:17) | phobos | fear | fear, reverence, awe | ”fear,” “in reverent fear,” “conduct yourselves with fear” | Reverent awe before God the impartial Judge, not servile terror | 敬畏 (jìngwèi) | Medium — New term. Distinguish from ordinary fear (怕/恐惧) and from superstitious fear of offending spirits/ancestors; this is reverent awe of a personal, holy, impartial Judge. |
| πατροπαράδοτος ἀναστροφή (1:18) | patroparadotos anastrophē | way of life handed down from the fathers | ancestral tradition, inherited custom | ”the futile ways inherited from your forefathers,” “empty way of life handed down from your ancestors” | Redemption is explicitly from an inherited, futile ancestral way of life — one of the most culturally sensitive phrases in the book | 祖宗遗传的虚妄行为 (zǔzōng yíchuán de xūwàng xíngwéi) | Critical — Direct, unavoidable collision with Chinese ancestor veneration (祭祖) and filial-transmission tradition, both highly esteemed values. This is NOT a wholesale condemnation of honoring parents/ancestors (cf. 1 Peter’s own household ethics), but specifically targets futile, empty religious/moral patterns inherited by tradition apart from God. Requires extensive teaching note to prevent the text being heard as anti-filial-piety, or conversely, being softened to lose its force. |
| ἐλυτρώθητε (< λυτρόω) (1:18) | elytrōthēte | you were ransomed/redeemed | to redeem, ransom, buy back (from slavery or captivity) | “you were redeemed,” “you were ransomed” | Christ’s blood is the price paid to liberate believers from the futile ancestral way of life and from sin’s bondage | 救赎 (jiùshú) | Critical — New core soteriological term (distinct from, but closely related to, baseline 救恩/salvation). Must be clearly defined against any Buddhist merit-based liberation reading (cf. baseline caution on 解脱 under “salvation”); redemption here is a ransom paid by Christ’s blood, not a liberation earned through self-effort or accumulated merit. |
| ἀργύριον / χρυσίον, φθαρτά (1:18) | argyrion / chrysion, phtharta | silver or gold, perishable things | perishable wealth | ”perishable things like silver or gold” | Contrast: the redemption price is not earthly wealth (which perishes) but Christ’s precious blood | 能坏的金银 | Low — Contrastive, literal; low risk. |
| αἷμα … ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου, Χριστοῦ (1:19) | haima hōs amnou amōmou kai aspilou, Christou | blood as of an unblemished and spotless lamb, of Christ | sacrificial lamb imagery (Passover/Exodus 12; Isaiah 53) | “the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” | Christ as the sinless Passover/sacrificial Lamb, whose blood is the redemption price — foundational to “Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering” | 无瑕疵、无玷污的羔羊的血 | Critical — Requires OT sacrificial-system and Passover background teaching. Must not be flattened into generic “sacrifice” language that could merge with folk sacrificial offerings to gods/ancestors (cf. spiritual sacrifices note in ch. 2); this is a unique, unrepeatable, sin-bearing sacrifice. |
| προεγνωσμένου / φανερωθέντος (1:20) | proegnōsmenou / phanerōthentos | foreknown / manifested | foreordained; made visible/appeared | ”foreknown before the foundation of the world… manifested in these last times” | Christ’s redemptive role was eternally planned by God and historically revealed at a specific point in time — reinforces the once-for-all, non-cyclical nature of redemption | 早已被神预知…末世才显现 | High — Ties to 1:2 πρόγνωσις and the “fulfillment of prophecy” doctrine; must preserve linear (not cyclical) historical fulfillment, per baseline caution on 治乱循环. |
| ἀναγεγεννημένοι … διὰ σπόρου … ἀφθάρτου, διὰ λόγου ζῶντος Θεοῦ (1:23) | anagegennēmenoi … dia sporou aphthartou, dia logou zōntos theou | having been born again … through imperishable seed, through the living word of God | new birth through an imperishable “seed” — God’s living word | ”born again… through the living and enduring word of God” | Regeneration (1:3) is now traced to its specific means: the imperishable, life-giving word of God, not human effort or lineage | 藉着神活泼常存的道重生 | Critical — Reuses 重生 (Critical, see 1:3 note) AND introduces 道 for “word.” Because 道 is also the standard Daoist term for the impersonal cosmic Way (and the character used in the established Christology phrase 道成肉身, “the Word became flesh” — see baseline “incarnation” caution), every occurrence of 神的道 in 1 Peter requires the same clarifying note: this is God’s own personal, living, spoken/written communication, not an impersonal cosmic principle. |
| φιλαδελφία / ἀγάπη ἐκ καρδίας (1:22) | philadelphia / agapē ek kardias | brotherly love / love from the heart | love for fellow believers; sincere, heartfelt love | ”brotherly love,” “love one another earnestly from a pure heart” | Genuine, unhypocritical love among believers as fruit of new birth and obedience to the truth | 弟兄相爱 | Medium — New term, related to but distinct from 团契 (fellowship, baseline). Distinguish from sworn-brotherhood bonding (结拜, per baseline fellowship caution) — this is Spirit-produced family love among the reborn, not a ritual pact. |
| χλόη / ἄνθος (1:24, quoting Isaiah 40) | chloē / anthos | grass / flower | vegetation; flower/blossom | ”grass… flower” | Old Testament quotation contrasting perishable human glory with the enduring word of God | 草…花 | Low — Literal OT quotation imagery; low risk. |
| εὐαγγελισθέν (1:25) | euangelisthen | having been proclaimed as good news | to announce good news, evangelize | ”the good news that was preached to you,” “the gospel preached to you” | The enduring “word of the Lord” (Isaiah 40 quotation) is identified with the gospel message preached to the readers | 所传给你们的福音 | Medium — MUST reuse baseline 福音 for the noun; verb form (εὐαγγελίζω) rendered 传福音, consistent usage required throughout the book (cf. 4:6). |

| βρέφη / ἄδολον γάλα λογικόν (2:2) | brephē / adolon gala logikon | infants / unadulterated rational-word milk | newborns; pure, unmixed, “of-the-word” milk | ”newborn infants… pure spiritual milk,” “the pure milk of the word” | Believers as spiritual infants craving the nourishment of God’s word for growth toward salvation | 纯净的灵奶(属灵的奶) | Medium — New metaphor term. λογικός here connects to λόγος (“word,” see 1:23 note); teaching should tie this milk explicitly to Scripture/the gospel message, not a generic devotional feeling. |
| λίθος ζῶν (2:4-5) | lithos zōn | living stone | a stone that is alive | ”living stone” | Christ, and derivatively believers, as “living stones” built into a spiritual temple — central to “The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood” | 活石 (huóshí) | High — New, vivid ecclesiological metaphor. Distinguish from Chinese folk/Daoist “spirit stone” (灵石) legendary-object motifs (e.g. in classical fiction) that suggest a magical animated object; this is a theological metaphor for living participation in Christ, not an enchanted object. |
| οἶκος πνευματικός (2:5) | oikos pneumatikos | spiritual house | spiritual household/temple | ”spiritual house,” “spiritual temple” | The church as a living temple built of believers, replacing the physical Jerusalem temple as God’s dwelling | 灵宫(属灵的殿) | Medium — New term. Must be distinguished from a physical temple building (庙/寺/道观, forbidden under baseline “church”); this is the corporate body of believers, not architecture. |
| ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον (2:5) | hierateuma hagion | holy priesthood | a body of priests; priestly community | ”a holy priesthood” | All believers corporately constituted as priests with direct access to God through Christ — no longer through a separate professional priestly caste | 圣洁的祭司 | Critical — Core term for the curriculum doctrine “The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood.” 祭司 is the standard term for priests across religious traditions in Chinese (OT priests, but also loosely used for pagan/folk temple functionaries). Must be taught carefully: this does NOT create a specialized ritual-performing clergy class distinct from ordinary believers (as with Buddhist monks/Daoist priests/folk temple priests, or even a Catholic-style ministerial priesthood); every baptized believer shares this priestly access and priestly calling. |
| θυσίαι πνευματικαί (2:5) | thysiai pneumatikai | spiritual sacrifices | non-material offerings acceptable to God | ”spiritual sacrifices” | The priestly community’s offerings are not animal/incense sacrifices but spiritual ones (praise, obedience, good deeds) offered through Christ | 属灵的祭 | Critical — Extremely sensitive given the prevalence of ancestor-veneration offerings (祭祖) and idol/temple incense-and-food offerings (拜偶像的祭品) in Chinese religious culture. Must be explicitly distinguished: these are non-material offerings (praise, obedience, good works) made exclusively to the one true God through Christ’s mediation — never material offerings to ancestors, idols, or other spirits. |
| λίθος ἐκλεκτός ἔντιμος / ἀκρογωνιαῖος (2:6-7, quoting Isaiah 28/Psalm 118) | lithos eklektos entimos / akrogōniaios | chosen, precious stone / cornerstone | cornerstone, foundation stone | ”a chosen and precious cornerstone” | Christ as the foundation stone of God’s building, both honored by believers and rejected by unbelievers | 房角石 (fángjiǎoshí) | Medium — New term; established architectural-messianic OT metaphor, low ambiguity once explained. |
| λίθος προσκόμματος καὶ πέτρα σκανδάλου (2:8) | lithos proskommatos kai petra skandalou | stone of stumbling and rock of offense | a stumbling obstacle | ”a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense” | For unbelievers, the same Christ who is a precious cornerstone becomes an obstacle causing judgment | 绊脚的石头 | Medium — Standard idiom once explained; low ambiguity. |
| γένος ἐκλεκτόν, βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα, ἔθνος ἅγιον, λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν (2:9) | genos eklekton, basileion hierateuma, ethnos hagion, laos eis peripoiēsin | a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession | four-part identity title (echoing Exodus 19:5-6) | “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” | The church corporately inherits Israel’s covenant identity titles — foundational for both “Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood” and “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” (cf. Romans baseline) | 有君尊的祭司、圣洁的国度、属神的子民 | Critical — The phrase βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα (“royal priesthood”) carries the same collision risk flagged in the Romans baseline under 天子/Mandate-of-Heaven political-legitimacy language: “royal” here must be taught as a derived, corporate identity granted in Christ (all believers share royal-priestly access to God), NOT a this-worldly political dynasty or state-sanctioned religious office. ἔθνος ἅγιον (“holy nation”) likewise must not be read as a nationalist or ethnic-political claim (cf. baseline caution on 天下 under “kingdom of God”). |
| ἐκ σκότους εἰς … φῶς (2:9) | ek skotous eis phōs | out of darkness into light | darkness/light contrast | ”out of darkness into his marvelous light” | Conversion as a decisive transfer from spiritual darkness to God’s light | 从暗昧入光明 | Medium — Standard biblical light/darkness metaphor; ensure it is not conflated with yin-yang balance imagery (陰陽), which frames darkness/light as complementary cosmic forces rather than a moral-spiritual before/after contrast. |
| πάροικοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι (2:11) | paroikoi kai parepidēmoi | resident aliens and sojourners | see 1:1 note | ”sojourners and exiles,” “aliens and strangers” | Reuse of 1:1 identity language, now grounding practical ethical exhortation | 客旅、寄居的 | Medium — Reuse rendering established at 1:1; keep consistent. |
| ἐπιθυμίαι σαρκικαί (2:11) | epithymiai sarkikai | fleshly desires | bodily/sinful desires | ”the passions of the flesh,” “sinful desires” | Desires opposed to the soul’s true good, to be resisted as part of holy conduct | 肉体的私欲 | Medium — New term (σάρξ, “flesh,” recurs through the book). Note possible resonance with Confucian self-restraint ideals (克己, “mastering the self”) — clarify these desires are resisted by the Spirit’s enabling, not by unaided moral self-discipline alone. |
| ἡμέρα ἐπισκοπῆς (2:12) | hēmera episkopēs | day of visitation | day of God’s visiting/inspection | ”the day he visits us,” “the day of visitation” | The future day when God visits in judgment/vindication, prompting Gentiles to glorify God because of believers’ good conduct now | 眷顾的日子 | Medium — New eschatological idiom; low-medium ambiguity once explained. |
| ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει (2:13) | hypotagēte pasē anthrōpinē ktisei | submit to every human institution | to place oneself under, submit, be subordinate | ”submit yourselves to every human institution/authority” | Voluntary submission to civil governing structures for the Lord’s sake — foundational for “Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance” | 顺服人的一切制度 | High — Central term for one of the eight curriculum doctrines. ὑποτάγητε (submit) recurs at 2:18 (servants), 3:1 (wives), 3:22 (angels/powers subject to Christ), and 5:5 (younger to elders) — track consistently as 顺服. Must be distinguished from Confucian hierarchical duty owed automatically by rank in the Five Relationships (五伦) framework; biblical submission here is a voluntary, gospel-motivated choice “for the Lord’s sake” (2:13), modeled on Christ’s own submission in suffering (2:21-23), not an impersonal cosmic-order obligation. |
| βασιλεύς / ἡγεμόνες (2:13-14) | basileus / hēgemones | king / governors | ruler; regional governor | ”the emperor… governors” | Specific application of submission to the Roman emperor and provincial governors | 君王、臣宰(官员) | Low — Historical-political terms; low doctrinal risk, contextual/historical note sufficient. |
| ἐλευθερία (2:16) | eleutheria | freedom | liberty, freedom | ”freedom,” “free” | Believers are free in Christ but must not use freedom as a pretext (ἐπικάλυμμα) for evil | 自由 (zìyóu) | Medium — New term; must retain the immediately-following qualifier (not “a cover-up for evil,” μὴ ὡς ἐπικάλυμμα ἔχοντες τῆς κακίας τὴν ἐλευθερίαν) to prevent a libertine misreading. |
| τιμήσατε / φοβεῖσθε / ἀγαπᾶτε (2:17) | timēsate / phobeisthe / agapate | honor / fear / love | to honor; to fear/reverence; to love | ”honor everyone… fear God… love the brotherhood… honor the emperor” | A fourfold ethical summary distinguishing the fear owed to God alone from the honor owed to all people and civil authority | 敬重众人、敬畏神、爱弟兄、尊敬君王 | High — Critical distinction: 敬畏 (reverent fear) is reserved for God alone; 尊敬/敬重 (honor/respect) is given to human authority. Collapsing these into a single term would blur the line between exclusive worship of God and appropriate civic honor — must be kept doctrinally distinct in translation. |
| οἰκέται / δεσπόται (2:18) | oiketai / despotai | household servants / masters | domestic slaves; masters, owners | ”servants/slaves… masters” | Household-code instruction to servants to submit even to harsh masters, following Christ’s example | 仆人、主人 | Medium — New term. IMPORTANT TRANSLATOR NOTE: 主人 (zhǔrén) here refers to a HUMAN master and must never be confused with, or allowed to bleed into, 主 (Lord, reserved for God/Christ per baseline “lord” entry) or 主人 as a rejected alternative for divine Lordship. Context must make the human referent unmistakable. |
| σκολιοί (2:18) | skolioi | crooked, unjust | perverse, unreasonable | ”unjust,” “harsh,” “unreasonable” | Describes masters who are unjust — submission is commended even toward such masters | 乖僻的 | Low — Descriptive adjective; low risk. |
| πάσχειν ἀδίκως (2:19) | paschein adikōs | to suffer unjustly | to suffer wrongfully, without cause | ”suffering unjustly,” “suffers unjustly” | Enduring unjust suffering for conscience toward God is commendable — a foundational text for “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” | 无辜受苦 / 冒屈受苦 | Critical — Central term for a core curriculum doctrine. πάσχω (“suffer”) is one of 1 Peter’s most frequent and load-bearing verbs (occurring ~12 times); render consistently as 受苦 throughout. Must be sharply distinguished from karmic-retribution suffering (报应, already flagged under baseline “sin”) — this suffering is explicitly UNDESERVED and yet commended by God, the opposite of a karma-ledger where suffering signals accumulated wrongdoing. |
| χάρις (in the sense of “commendable/gracious thing,” 2:19-20) | charis | grace, favor; (idiom) a commendable/credit-worthy thing | grace; (here) “a credit,” “commendable" | "this is a gracious thing,” “this finds favor” | Reapplication of χάρις to describe patient endurance of undeserved suffering as something graced/commended by God | 可喜爱的(蒙恩的) | Medium — Idiomatic extension of baseline 恩典; note the different sense here (a commendable act) versus the technical soteriological sense (unmerited salvation) elsewhere — flag for translator awareness so 恩典 is not misapplied as “merit earned by good suffering.” |
| Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν (2:21) | Christos epathen hyper hymōn | Christ suffered on behalf of/for you | ὑπέρ = “on behalf of,” “for the sake of,” “in place of" | "Christ suffered for you,” “Christ also suffered for you” | Christ’s suffering as both substitutionary act and moral example — the theological anchor of “Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering” | 基督也为你们受过苦 | Critical — The preposition ὑπέρ carries substitutionary weight (developed further in 2:24 and 3:18); must be rendered with 为 (on behalf of) and never diluted to a merely exemplary “alongside you” sense. Every occurrence requires theologian review per baseline escalation rules on atonement language. |
| ὑπογραμμός (2:21) | hypogrammos | a writing-copy (for students to trace), pattern, example | model, example to be copied | ”example,” “leaving you an example” | Christ’s suffering also functions as a pattern for believers to follow in their own unjust suffering | 榜样 (bǎngyàng) | Low — Standard term. |
| ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἐποίησεν (2:22, quoting Isaiah 53) | hamartian ouk epoiēsen | he did not commit sin | sinlessness | ”he committed no sin” | Christ’s sinlessness qualifies him as the substitute sin-bearer | 他没有犯罪 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline 罪 (sin) exactly; sinlessness claim must not be softened. |
| λοιδορούμενος οὐκ ἀντελοιδόρει (2:23) | loidoroumenos ouk anteloidorei | being reviled, he did not revile in return | to revile, insult | ”when he was reviled, he did not revile in return” | Christ’s non-retaliatory response to suffering as the pattern for believers (cf. “Christlike Endurance”) | 被骂不还口 | Medium — Vivid idiom; low ambiguity once contextualized. |
| ἀνήνεγκεν … ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον (2:24) | anēnegken epi to xylon | he bore [our sins] up onto the tree | ξύλον = “wood/tree,” euphemism for the cross (cf. Deuteronomy 21:23) | “he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree” | Substitutionary sin-bearing at the cross | 他在木头上(十字架上)亲身担当了我们的罪 | Critical — ξύλον (“tree”) is an OT-echoing euphemism for the cross; render with 十字架 (the standard, established Chinese Christian term for “cross”) supplemented by a note on the OT background, rather than a literal “wood/tree” that could obscure the crucifixion reference. |
| τῷ μώλωπι ἰάθητε (2:24, quoting Isaiah 53) | tō mōlōpi iathēte | by his wound you were healed | to heal, cure | ”by his wounds you have been healed” | Christ’s suffering brings spiritual healing/restoration — must not be limited to physical healing alone | 因他的鞭伤,你们便得了医治 | High — New term. Given the prevalence of folk/qigong/traditional-medicine healing practices in Chinese culture, this must be taught primarily as spiritual restoration (moral/relational healing from sin, cf. context: “you were straying like sheep… now returned”) rather than a promise of physical healing through faith-technique. |
| πρόβατα πλανώμενα / ποιμὴν καὶ ἐπίσκοπος τῶν ψυχῶν (2:25) | probata planōmena / poimēn kai episkopos tōn psychōn | straying sheep / shepherd and overseer of souls | shepherd/pastor; overseer, guardian | ”straying sheep… the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” | Christ as the Shepherd-Overseer who restores wandering souls — anticipates the “Elders” doctrine of chapter 5 | 牧人和监督 | Medium — New terms (ποιμήν, ἐπίσκοπος); establish consistent renderings here for reuse at 5:2-4 (elders as under-shepherds) and 5:4 (Christ as ἀρχιποιμήν, “chief Shepherd”). |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν (3:1) | gynaikes hypotassomenai tois andrasin | wives submitting to [their own] husbands | household-code submission | ”wives, be subject to your own husbands” | Household-code application of ὑποτάγητε (2:13) to the marriage relationship, as a voluntary, gospel-shaped disposition, not a status imposed by inferiority | 妻子顺服丈夫 | Critical — Reuses 顺服 (established at 2:13); high collision risk with the Confucian ethic of the Three Obediences (三从: a woman obeying father, then husband, then son) and Four Virtues (四德), a codified social-hierarchy duty rooted in inherent status inferiority. Must be taught as a voluntary, Christlike disposition (paralleling 2:13-3:6’s own logic and Christ’s own submission-in-suffering in 2:21-23), addressed to wives whose husbands may even be unbelievers (3:1), not a claim about women’s inherent inferiority or an unconditional patriarchal social order. Requires theologian AND native-speaker cultural-sensitivity review. |
| ἁγνὴ ἀναστροφὴ ἐν φόβῳ (3:2) | hagnē anastrophē en phobō | pure conduct in fear/reverence | reverent, pure behavior | ”your pure and reverent conduct” | Reuses ἀναστροφή (1:15) and φόβος (1:17); consistent tracking required | 圣洁、敬畏(神)的行为 | Medium — Reuse of established renderings. |
| ὁ κρυπτὸς τῆς καρδίας ἄνθρωπος, ἐν τῷ ἀφθάρτῳ τοῦ πραέος καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος (3:4) | ho kryptos tēs kardias anthrōpos, en tō aphthartō tou praeos kai hēsychiou pneumatos | the hidden person of the heart, in the imperishable [quality] of a gentle and quiet spirit | inner character; gentle, tranquil disposition | ”the hidden person of the heart… a gentle and quiet spirit” | True, lasting beauty located in inner character rather than external adornment | 心里隐藏的人、温柔安静的心灵 | Medium — New term; ensure “quiet” (ἡσύχιος) is not read as passivity/silencing but as inner tranquility of character, consistent with the rest of the letter’s active endurance ethic. |
| Σάρρα … κύριον αὐτὸν καλοῦσα (3:6) | Sarra … kyrion auton kalousa | Sarah … calling him lord | κύριος applied to a human husband | ”Sarah… calling him lord” | Illustrative OT example; κύριος here is a term of domestic respect for a husband, NOT a claim of divine Lordship | 撒拉…称他为主 | High — TRANSLATOR NOTE REQUIRED: this is the one place in the NT household codes where κύριος (baseline “Lord,” reserved exclusively for God/Christ in doctrinal contexts) is applied to a human husband. Context must make unmistakably clear this is a historical-illustrative usage of domestic honor language, not an extension of Christ’s exclusive divine Lordship to husbands. |
| ἄνδρες συνοικοῦντες κατὰ γνῶσιν, τιμὴν ἀπονέμοντες ὡς … ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει (3:7) | andres synoikountes kata gnōsin, timēn aponemontes hōs asthenesterō skeuei | husbands living together with understanding, showing honor as to a weaker vessel | σκεῦος = vessel, container (figurative: a person, physically/socially) | “husbands, live with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel” | Husbands are commanded to show honor and understanding, balancing 3:1-6, and are warned their prayers are hindered if they fail to do so | 软弱的器皿 | High — Culturally and pastorally sensitive term; “weaker vessel” is not a claim of spiritual or moral inferiority (they are “fellow heirs of the grace of life,” same verse) but likely refers to relative physical vulnerability in the ancient household context. Translator note required to prevent this being read either as demeaning or as license for domineering treatment — the verse’s actual command is HONOR, reinforced by a warning to husbands about hindered prayer. |
| συγκληρονόμοι χάριτος ζωῆς (3:7) | sygklēronomoi charitos zōēs | fellow heirs of the grace of life | co-inheritors | ”fellow heirs of the grace of life” | Wives and husbands are equal co-heirs of the same grace — balances the household code’s submission language with fundamental spiritual equality | 一同承受生命之恩 | High — Reuses baseline 恩典 (grace) and echoes 基业 (inheritance, 1:4); must be highlighted as the theological balance to 3:1 and 3:7a — equal standing before God regardless of household role. |
| ὁμόφρονες, συμπαθεῖς, φιλάδελφοι, εὔσπλαγχνοι, ταπεινόφρονες (3:8) | homophrones, sympatheis, philadelphoi, eusplagchnoi, tapeinophrones | of one mind, sympathetic, brotherly, tenderhearted, humble-minded | a five-part ethical cluster | ”of one mind, sympathetic, brotherly, tenderhearted, humble” | Community ethic summary; introduces ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility), a core term further developed in chapter 5 | 同心、体恤、相爱如兄弟、有慈心、谦卑 | High (for ταπεινόφρονες/謙卑, see extended note at 5:5) |
| μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ … εὐλογοῦντες (3:9) | mē apodidontes kakon anti kakou … eulogountes | not repaying evil for evil … but blessing | non-retaliation; blessing | ”not repaying evil for evil… but blessing” | Non-retaliatory blessing of those who wrong you, echoing Christ’s own pattern (2:23) | 不以恶报恶…倒要祝福 | Medium — Reinforces “Christlike Endurance” doctrine; low ambiguity once contextualized. |
| πάσχοντες διὰ δικαιοσύνην (3:14) | paschontes dia dikaiosynēn | suffering for the sake of righteousness | suffering caused by/for righteousness | ”if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake,” “even if you suffer for what is right” | The clearest single statement of the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” | 为义受苦 (wéi yì shòukǔ) | Critical — Combines baseline 义 (righteousness, itself Critical due to the Confucian-virtue collision risk) with 受苦 (see 2:19 note). Every occurrence requires the standard baseline translator note distinguishing 义 from the Confucian virtue AND a note distinguishing this suffering from karmic retribution. This is arguably the single most theologically load-bearing short phrase in 1 Peter for this curriculum. |
| Κύριον τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν (3:15) | Kyrion ton Christon hagiasate en tais kardiais hymōn | sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts | ἁγιάζω = to set apart as holy, to honor as holy | ”in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy,” “sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts” | Reverencing Christ’s Lordship internally, as the wellspring of courageous, gracious response to hostile questioning | 心里尊主基督为圣 | Critical — Combines baseline 主 (Lord) and 圣洁/成圣 (holy/sanctify) roots; MUST preserve exclusive divine Lordship (10:9-style confession logic, cf. baseline “Lordship of Christ” doctrine) — every occurrence requires theologian review per baseline escalation rules. |
| ἀπολογία (3:15) | apologia | a verbal defense, reasoned answer | defense (legal or informal) | “a reason,” “an answer,” “a defense” | Believers must be ready to give a reasoned account of their hope when questioned | 分诉(辩明的理由) | Medium — New term; not a formal courtroom-only sense, but any reasoned account given to an inquirer. |
| συνείδησις ἀγαθή (3:16, 3:21) | syneidēsis agathē | good conscience | moral awareness/conscience | ”good conscience,” “a clear conscience” | Conscience shaped by the truth and by union with Christ, that testifies to one’s good conduct under false accusation | 良心 (liángxīn) | Medium — 良心 is a widely used, generally low-collision term shared with Confucian ethical vocabulary (an innate moral sense). Note theological distinction: biblical “good conscience” here is grounded in the truth of the gospel and (3:21) in one’s covenant relationship with God through Christ, not simply an innate moral faculty operating independently of revelation. |
| Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων (3:18) | Christos hapax peri hamartiōn epathen, dikaios hyper adikōn | Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for/on behalf of the unrighteous | ἅπαξ = once, once-for-all, a single unrepeatable event; ὑπέρ = substitutionary “for/on behalf of" | "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous” | The definitive statement of “Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering” — a single, final, substitutionary atoning event | 基督也曾一次为罪受苦,就是义的代替不义的受苦 | Critical — ἅπαξ (“once for all”) echoes the baseline’s insistence that Christ’s resurrection is a “once-for-all” event (see baseline “resurrection” notes); the same finality must be preserved here for his atoning suffering — NEVER implying a repeatable ritual re-enactment (contrast with repeatable ritual sacrifices/rites, e.g. 超度 or temple offerings performed repeatedly). Combines 义/不义 (righteous/unrighteous, reusing baseline 义) with substitutionary ὑπέρ. Requires theologian review every occurrence per baseline atonement-language escalation rule. |
| προσαγάγῃ τῷ Θεῷ (3:18) | prosagagē tō theō | might bring near/lead to God | bring into the presence of, grant access to | ”that he might bring us to God” | The purpose of Christ’s substitutionary suffering: granting direct access to God (echoes the “royal priesthood” access theme of ch. 2) | 为要领你们到神面前 | Medium — New term; reinforce continuity with priesthood/access theology of chapter 2. |
| θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι (3:18) | thanatōtheis sarki, zōopoiētheis pneumati | put to death in flesh, made alive in/by spirit | contrast of realms: fleshly death vs. spiritual/Spirit-empowered life | ”being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit” | Describes the mode of Christ’s death and resurrection/vindication — theologically debated but central to Christ’s victory over death | 按着肉体说,他被治死;按着灵性说,他复活了 | Critical — Christologically dense and exegetically disputed (whether “spirit” refers to the Holy Spirit, Christ’s own human spirit, or his resurrection mode of existence). Must not be reduced to a simple body/soul dualism that could be read through a Daoist or Buddhist body-spirit separation lens (e.g., spirit escaping the body at death as in folk near-death narratives). Requires theologian review every occurrence. |
| τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν … ἐκήρυξεν (3:19-20) | tois en phylakē pneumasin … ekēryxen | to the spirits in prison … he proclaimed | φυλακή = prison, place of confinement; πνεῦμα = spirit (here, disembodied spirit-beings); κηρύσσω = to proclaim/announce (a herald’s public announcement, NOT necessarily “preach the gospel for salvation”) | “he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,” “he made proclamation to the spirits now in prison” | One of the most theologically disputed passages in the NT — foundational to the curriculum doctrine “Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22).” Best-attested interpretive options: (a) Christ, between death and resurrection (or in his resurrected/ascended state), proclaimed judgment/victory to fallen angelic spirits (“sons of God” of Genesis 6) now imprisoned awaiting final judgment; (b) Christ, through the Spirit, preached through Noah to the disobedient humans of Noah’s generation, now dead and “imprisoned.” | 那些在监狱里的灵 … 传道给他们 | CRITICAL — HIGHEST COLLISION RISK IN THE BOOK. This passage sits directly atop the same cultural terrain as the baseline’s forbidden term 超度 (chāodù) — the Buddhist/Daoist ritual of a monk/priest releasing a dead person’s soul from suffering in the underworld — and the wider Chinese folk-religious practice of ritually addressing/appeasing trapped or wandering spirits (孤魂野鬼). A loose or under-qualified translation risks being heard by Chinese readers as: (1) Christ performing a chāodù-style rescue rite for departed souls, offering a second chance at salvation after death (directly contradicting baseline “salvation” doctrine that salvation is received in this life by faith, not through post-mortem ritual); or (2) validating ancestor/ghost-appeasement practice as a Christian analog. MANDATORY translator note on every occurrence: κηρύσσω here is a proclamation/announcement (not the specific gospel-preaching verb εὐαγγελίζω used in 4:6), most likely a proclamation of judgment/triumph to imprisoned spirit-beings, not an offer of postmortem salvation to human souls. This passage requires human theologian review without exception and should never be translated or taught without accompanying doctrinal explanation. |
| ἡμέραι Νῶε, κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ (3:20) | hēmerai Nōe, kataskeuazomenēs kibōtou | days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared | proper name; ark = a large rescue vessel | ”the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared” | Old Testament narrative background invoked as a type of salvation-through-water/judgment | 挪亚的日子,方舟预备的时候 | Low — 挪亚 (Noah) and 方舟 (ark) are established, standard CUV proper-noun/term renderings; low risk. |
| ὀκτὼ ψυχαὶ διεσώθησαν διʼ ὕδατος (3:20) | oktō psychai diesōthēsan di’ hydatos | eight souls were saved through water | σώζω = to save/rescue | ”eight persons were saved through water” | Historical rescue of Noah’s family, functioning as a type of baptismal salvation | 八个人藉着水得救 | Critical — MUST reuse baseline 救恩/得救 root terms exactly; also reuses ψυχή (soul, see 1:9 note) — here rendered simply as “persons” (人) rather than the more loaded 灵魂, matching the CUV convention, since the referent is living human beings being physically rescued, not a technical soul/spirit discussion. |
| ἀντίτυπον … βάπτισμα (3:21) | antitypon … baptisma | a corresponding-type … baptism | ἀντίτυπος = a corresponding “antitype” fulfilling an OT “type”; βάπτισμα = baptism, immersion | ”baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you” | Christian baptism explicitly identified as fulfilling the Noah/flood typology — but immediately qualified as NOT a physical washing | 洗礼 (xǐlǐ) | Critical — 1 Peter itself supplies the safeguard against ritualistic misunderstanding: “not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience” (οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς Θεόν). This qualifying clause MUST always be translated together with, and never separated from, the claim “baptism now saves you” — otherwise the verse risks being read as teaching that the ritual washing itself (rather than the underlying faith-pledge it embodies, secured by Christ’s resurrection) accomplishes salvation, opening the door to comparison with ritual purification washings in Chinese folk/Buddhist/Daoist practice. Requires theologian review every occurrence. |
| δεξιᾷ Θεοῦ (3:22) | dexia theou | right hand of God | position of highest honor/authority | ”at the right hand of God” | Idiom for Christ’s position of supreme honor and authority after his ascension | 神的右边 | Medium — Standard idiom, requires brief explanation that this denotes position of authority/honor, not literal spatial location. |
| ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ (3:22) | angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn hypotagentōn autō | angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him | ἐξουσία = authority, ruling power; δύναμις = power/might (here personified spiritual powers) | “angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him” | Christ’s cosmic victory and supremacy over all spiritual powers, resolving the tension introduced by the “spirits in prison” passage | 天使和有权柄的、有能力的,都服了他 | High — Reuses ὑποτάγω (submission) root, here applied cosmically rather than to human relationships; reinforces Christ’s supreme Lordship (cf. baseline “Lordship of Christ”) over all spiritual beings, including the imprisoned spirits of 3:19. |

| Χριστοῦ παθόντος σαρκί (4:1) | Christou pathontos sarki | Christ having suffered in the flesh | reuse of πάσχω/σάρξ | ”Christ suffered in the flesh” | Christ’s suffering as the pattern believers arm themselves to imitate | 基督既在肉身受苦 | Critical — Reuse of established 受苦 rendering. |
| ἐπιθυμίαι ἀνθρώπων / θέλημα Θεοῦ (4:2) | epithymiai anthrōpōn / thelēma theou | desires of men / will of God | human passions vs. divine will | ”human passions… the will of God” | Contrast structuring the whole ethical section: a life driven by human desire vs. one aligned to God’s will | 人的私欲、神的旨意 | High — θέλημα Θεοῦ (“will of God”) is a new term requiring the same caution as baseline “providence” (神的护理): must be taught as God’s personal, purposive will, not an impersonal fatalistic 天意/命运. |
| ἀσέλγεια, ἐπιθυμίαι, οἰνοφλυγίαι, κῶμοι, πότοι, εἰδωλολατρίαι (4:3) | aselgeia, epithymiai, oinophlygiai, kōmoi, potoi, eidōlolatriai | sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, idolatries | vice catalogue | ”sensuality, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry” | The former Gentile way of life the readers have left behind — culminating climactically in idolatry | 拜偶像 (bài ǒuxiàng) among others | Critical — εἰδωλολατρία (“idolatry”) is one of the highest-collision terms in the whole book for a Mandarin-speaking, especially ancestor-venerating, readership. Must be clearly taught as devotion/worship/ritual offering directed toward any object, image, ancestral tablet, or being other than the one true God (神) — a direct, unavoidable point of tension with widespread Chinese ancestor veneration (祭祖) and folk deity worship (拜神/拜偶像), which this letter’s first readers (former pagans, 4:3) are explicitly said to have abandoned. Requires theologian review and careful pastoral framing; must not be watered down to mere “excessive religious devotion.” |
| ἀποδώσουσιν λόγον τῷ … κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (4:5) | apodōsousin logon tō … krinai zōntas kai nekrous | they will give an account to the one … to judge the living and the dead | κρίνω = to judge, to decide a verdict | ”they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” | Final, universal divine judgment — every person, living or already dead, is accountable to God | 审判活人死人 (shěnpàn huórén sǐrén) | High — New eschatological-judgment term; reinforces “Universal Human Accountability” (cf. Romans baseline doctrine of the same name) applied specifically in 1 Peter’s persecution context. |
| εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς (4:6) | euēngelisthē kai nekrois | the gospel was preached even to [the] dead | εὐαγγελίζω = to preach good news (contrast κηρύσσω at 3:19) | “the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead” | Closely related, equally disputed companion passage to 3:19; likely refers to the gospel having been preached, during their lifetime, to people who have since died (not a postmortem preaching event) | 死人也曾有福音传给他们 | Critical — MUST be cross-referenced with the 3:19 “spirits in prison” translator note and treated with the same rigor. The predominant interpretive safeguard: “the dead” here (νεκροί) most naturally refers to people who were alive when the gospel was preached to them and have since died (paralleling “living and dead” in 4:5), NOT a claim that the gospel is preached to people after they have died, granting a postmortem opportunity for salvation. This distinction is essential to prevent this verse from being read as scriptural support for chāodù-style (超度) posthumous rescue of the dead, directly contradicting the baseline “salvation” doctrine. Requires theologian review without exception. |
| ἀγάπη … καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν (4:8) | agapē … kalyptei plēthos hamartiōn | love covers a multitude of sins | καλύπτω = to cover, conceal | ”love covers a multitude of sins” | Fervent mutual love overlooks and forbears one another’s many faults within the community — a statement about relational forbearance, NOT a claim that human love atones for sin before God | 爱能遮掩许多的罪 | High — Translator note required to prevent confusion with the atonement doctrine (Christ’s blood, not human love, atones for sin before God, cf. 1:18-19, 2:24, 3:18); this verse concerns interpersonal forbearance within the church community, a distinct register from soteriological “covering” of sin. |
| χάρισμα (4:10) | charisma | gift, grace-gift | a gift given by grace | ”gift,” “spiritual gift” | Reuse of baseline “spiritual gifts” doctrine — every believer has received a gift to steward for others | 恩赐 | Medium — MUST reuse baseline compound 属灵恩赐 (spiritual gifts) consistently; NEVER 神通/法力 per baseline forbidden list. |
| οἰκονόμοι … ποικίλης χάριτος Θεοῦ (4:10) | oikonomoi … poikilēs charitos theou | stewards of the varied/manifold grace of God | οἰκονόμος = household manager, steward | ”good stewards of God’s varied grace” | Believers as managers entrusted with God’s grace-gifts for the benefit of others, not personal accumulation | 好管家 | Medium — New term; reinforce grace (reuse baseline 恩典) as a stewarded trust, resisting any reading as personally accumulated merit. |
| πύρωσις (4:12) | pyrōsis | a burning, fiery ordeal | fiery trial, refining fire | ”the fiery trial,” “fiery ordeal” | Persecution described again with refining-fire imagery (cf. 1:7) | 火炼的试验 | Medium — Reuse of the refining-fire motif established at 1:7; same Daoist-alchemy collision caution applies. |
| κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν (4:13) | koinōneite tois tou Christou pathēmasin | you share/participate in the sufferings of Christ | κοινωνέω = to share, participate, have fellowship in | ”you share Christ’s sufferings,” “you participate in the sufferings of Christ” | Believers’ suffering is portrayed as a real participation in Christ’s own sufferings, source of present and future joy | 有份于基督的苦难 | High — Reuses baseline 团契 (fellowship) root and 苦难 (suffering); ties suffering directly into union-with-Christ theology (cf. Romans “Christian Identity in Christ” doctrine). |
| ὄνομα Χριστιανός (4:16) | onoma Christianos | the name “Christian” | a follower of Christ (originally likely a term of derision) | “as a Christian,” “for the name of Christ” | The label “Christian” itself as a badge of identification with Christ, worth suffering for, not shame | 基督徒 (Jīdūtú) | Low — Established, standard Chinese term; no significant collision risk, but worth flagging as a key identity term recurring across the curriculum. |
| κρίμα ἄρχεται ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ Θεοῦ (4:17) | krima archetai apo tou oikou tou theou | judgment begins from the house of God | οἶκος Θεοῦ = house/household of God (the church) | “judgment begins with the household of God” | God’s refining judgment/discipline begins with his own people, before it extends to unbelievers | 审判必先从神的家起首 | Medium — New term (οἶκος Θεοῦ, “house of God”); do not confuse with a physical temple/church building (cf. baseline “church” caution); this is the corporate people of God. |
| πιστὸς κτίστης (4:19) | pistos ktistēs | faithful Creator | κτίστης = creator, maker | ”a faithful Creator” | God as Creator, entrusted with the believer’s soul amid suffering — a title emphasizing his reliability and sovereign power over all he has made | 可信的造物主/创造者 | High — New term for God not present in the Romans baseline. Must be clearly monotheistic and distinguished from Chinese creation-myth figures (e.g. 女娲 Nüwa, 盘古 Pangu) or from an impersonal cosmic-origin principle; this is the same personal, triune 神 already established, now specifically titled as the one who made all things and can therefore be entrusted with one’s life. |
Chapter 5
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Mandarin Rendering | Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβυτέρους … ὁ συμπρεσβύτερος (5:1) | presbyterous … ho sympresbyteros | elders … the fellow-elder | πρεσβύτερος = elder (age-based term repurposed as a church office) | “elders… as a fellow elder” | Peter addresses church elders as a functional office of spiritual oversight, identifying himself as one of them — foundational for “Elders and Humility” | 长老 (zhǎnglǎo) | High — Core term for a named curriculum doctrine. 长老 in Chinese culture readily evokes generalized age-based social deference/veneration of elders (尊老, itself rooted in Confucian filial-social ethics) rather than a specific, functional church office of teaching and spiritual oversight instituted by qualification and calling, not merely age. Translator note required distinguishing the functional pastoral office (which even a relatively younger qualified man may hold) from generic elder-honor customs. |
| μάρτυς τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθημάτων (5:1) | martys tōn tou Christou pathēmatōn | a witness of the sufferings of Christ | μάρτυς = witness, eyewitness | ”a witness of the sufferings of Christ” | Peter’s personal eyewitness authority, grounding his exhortation | 基督受苦的见证人 | Medium — Reuse of established 苦难/受苦; new term 见证人 (witness), standard, low-risk. |
| ποιμάνατε τὸ … ποίμνιον τοῦ Θεοῦ (5:2) | poimanate to … poimnion tou theou | shepherd the flock of God | ποιμαίνω = to shepherd, tend, feed; ποίμνιον = flock | ”shepherd the flock of God that is among you” | Elders’ central task: pastoral care of God’s people, modeled on Christ the Shepherd-Overseer (cf. 2:25) | 牧养神的群羊 | Medium — Reuse of shepherd imagery established at 2:25; consistent tracking required. |
| ἐπισκοποῦντες (5:2) | episkopountes | exercising oversight | to oversee, supervise, watch over | ”exercising oversight,” “serving as overseers” | The elder’s supervisory/overseeing function, paired with shepherding | 监督(照管) | Medium — Reuse of ἐπίσκοπος root established at 2:25. |
| μὴ ἀναγκαστῶς ἀλλὰ ἑκουσίως … μηδὲ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ προθύμως (5:2) | mē anagkastōs alla hekousiōs … mēde aischrokerdōs alla prothymōs | not under compulsion but willingly … not for shameful gain but eagerly | manner-of-service qualifiers | ”not under compulsion, but willingly… not for shameful gain, but eagerly” | Eldership must be exercised from willing, non-mercenary motivation, not obligation or profit-seeking | 不是出于勉强,乃是出于甘心;不是因为贪财,乃是出于乐意 | Medium — Standard ethical vocabulary; ensure the contrast (compulsion/willingness; greed/eagerness) is not flattened. |
| μηδʼ ὡς κατακυριεύοντες τῶν κλήρων ἀλλὰ τύποι γινόμενοι τοῦ ποιμνίου (5:3) | mēd’ hōs katakyrieuontes tōn klērōn alla typoi ginomenoi tou poimniou | not lording it over those entrusted to you but becoming examples to the flock | κατακυριεύω = to dominate, exercise lordship over abusively (contains the κύριος root) | “not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” | Elders must NOT exercise the kind of “lordship” reserved exclusively for God/Christ — a crucial internal check on church leadership within the very chapter establishing eldership | 不是辖制所托付你们的,乃是作群羊的榜样 | High — κατακυριεύω shares its root with κύριος (baseline “Lord,” reserved for God/Christ). This creates a vital theological nuance: legitimate divine Lordship (主的权柄) must never be imitated by human elders as domineering control (辖制) over the congregation. Render 辖制 (xiázhì, “to tyrannize/dominate”) clearly as a NEGATIVE, forbidden behavior, sharply distinct from 主 (Lord); a translator note preventing confusion between the two is required. |
| φανερωθέντος τοῦ ἀρχιποίμενος (5:4) | phanerōthentos tou archipoimenos | when the chief Shepherd is revealed/appears | ἀρχιποιμήν = chief/head shepherd | ”when the chief Shepherd appears” | Christ as supreme Shepherd over all under-shepherd elders, who will reward faithful eldership at his return | 牧长显现的时候 | High — New Christological title (ἀρχιποιμήν), reinforcing Christ’s supreme authority over human church leadership (parallel to 2:25’s ποιμήν καὶ ἐπίσκοπος). Reuses ἀποκάλυψις/φανερωθέντος eschatological “revealing” vocabulary established in ch. 1. |
| στέφανον τῆς δόξης (5:4) | stephanon tēs doxēs | the crown of glory | στέφανος = a victor’s wreath/crown; δόξα = glory | ”the unfading crown of glory” | The eschatological reward for faithful eldership — reuses baseline 荣耀 (glory) | 荣耀的冠冕 | Medium — New term (στέφανος); must not be confused with an earthly royal/imperial crown (冕/皇冠) suggesting political rule, nor with Daoist immortality-achievement symbolism; this is an eschatological reward-image tied to Christ’s own glory. |
| νεώτεροι ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις (5:5) | neōteroi hypotagēte presbyterois | younger [people/men], submit to elders | reuse of ὑποτάγω | ”younger people, submit to elders” | Extension of the submission ethic (2:13, 3:1, 3:22) to the church’s internal generational/leadership order | 年幼的…顺服年长的 | High — Reuse of established 顺服; note this is submission within the believing community to a spiritual office, not merely generic Confucian age-based deference (though it does not exclude ordinary respect for age either) — the emphasis in context is submission to qualified pastoral oversight. |
| πάντες … ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε (5:5) | pantes … tapeinophrosynēn egkombōsasthe | all of you, tie on humility [like a garment/apron] | ἐγκομβόομαι = to tie on (a servant’s apron); ταπεινοφροσύνη = humility, lowliness of mind | ”clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” | A vivid image (possibly echoing Christ tying a towel around himself, John 13) commanding mutual humility as a deliberately “put on” garment — the climactic statement of the curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility” | 束上谦卑,彼此顺服 | Critical — ταπεινοφροσύνη (“humility”) is a core doctrinal term throughout 1 Peter (3:8, 5:5-6) requiring the SAME rigor as the Romans baseline’s caution on 成圣 (sanctification) and Neo-Confucian self-cultivation: Chinese 谦卑/谦虚 as commonly used denotes a valued social-etiquette virtue (modesty in speech/manner, often performed to preserve group harmony or avoid the appearance of arrogance), cultivated as personal virtue. Biblical ταπεινοφροσύνη is grounded specifically in Christ’s own self-abasement (cf. Philippians 2, and 1 Peter 2:21-23, 3:18) and in trust in God’s sovereign care (5:6-7, “casting all your anxiety on him”), not primarily a social-harmony technique or self-cultivated virtue for its own sake. Requires theologian review every occurrence. |
| ὁ Θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν (5:5, quoting Proverbs 3:34) | ho theos hyperēphanois antitassetai, tapeinois de didōsin charin | God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble | ὑπερήφανος = proud, arrogant; ἀντιτάσσομαι = to oppose, set oneself against | ”God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” | Direct scriptural grounding for humility: grace (reuse baseline 恩典) flows specifically to the humble, not the self-exalting — reinforces grace-versus-merit theology from an unexpected angle (God actively resists self-exaltation) | 神敌挡骄傲的人,赐恩给谦卑的人 | Critical — Reuses baseline 恩典 (grace, Critical risk) in direct connection with humility; must reinforce, not undermine, the baseline’s core teaching that grace is unmerited — note that grace is given to the humble not because humility earns it (functional merit) but because pride, by definition, refuses to receive an unearned gift; humility is the posture of reception, not a meritorious cause. |
| ταπεινώθητε ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ Θεοῦ (5:6) | tapeinōthēte hypo tēn krataian cheira tou theou | humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God | κραταιὰ χεῖρ = mighty/strong hand (OT idiom, e.g. Exodus) | “humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God” | Voluntary self-humbling before God’s sovereign power, trusting his timing for exaltation | 谦卑地服在神大能的手下 | Medium — Reuse of ταπεινός root; standard OT idiom (“mighty hand”) requiring brief background note. |
| πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ὑμῶν ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπʼ αὐτόν (5:7) | pasan tēn merimnan hymōn epiripsantes ep’ auton | having cast all your anxiety upon him | μέριμνα = anxiety, worry, care | ”casting all your anxieties on him” | Practical outworking of humility: trustful transfer of worry to God, who cares for his people | 将一切的忧虑卸给神 | Low — Standard term; low collision risk. |
| νήψατε, γρηγορήσατε (5:8) | nēpsate, grēgorēsate | be sober, be watchful/alert | νήφω = to be sober-minded, self-controlled; γρηγορέω = to stay awake, be vigilant | ”be sober-minded, be watchful” | Command to spiritual alertness in view of the adversary’s activity | 谨守、警醒 | Low — Standard ethical-vigilance vocabulary. |
| ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος … ζητῶν τινα καταπιεῖν (5:8) | ho antidikos hymōn diabolos hōs leōn ōryomenos … zētōn tina katapiein | your adversary the devil, like a roaring lion, … seeking someone to devour | ἀντίδικος = legal opponent/accuser; διάβολος = slanderer, the Devil (a specific personal being) | “your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” | A specific, personal spiritual adversary actively opposing believers — not one ghost/demon among many, but the singular chief adversary of God’s people | 你们的对头魔鬼,如同吼叫的狮子,遍地游行,寻找可吞吃的人 | High — 魔鬼 (móguǐ, “devil”) risks collapsing into the much broader Chinese folk category of 鬼 (guǐ, generic malevolent ghosts/spirits) or 妖魔 (monstrous demon-figures familiar from classical fiction such as Journey to the West). Must be taught as referring to a specific, singular, personal spiritual being — Satan, the ultimate adversary of God and his people — not one of many wandering ghosts or folkloric monsters to be ritually placated or exorcised by folk-religious practitioners. |
| ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει (5:9) | antistēte stereoi tē pistei | resist him, firm/solid in [your] faith | ἀνθίστημι = to resist, stand against | ”resist him, firm in your faith” | Reuse of baseline 信心 (faith) as the ground of resistance to the adversary | 用坚固的信心抵挡他 | High — MUST reuse baseline 信心 exactly. |
| καταρτίσει, στηρίξει, σθενώσει, θεμελιώσει (5:10) | katartisei, stērixei, sthenōsei, themeliōsei | he will restore/complete, confirm, strengthen, establish/found | a fourfold promise of divine restoration after suffering | ”restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” | God’s promised action following a period of suffering — reinforces “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” with a note of divine restoration | 亲自成全你们,坚固你们,赐力量给你们,建立你们 | Medium — Standard restorative vocabulary cluster; low individual risk but theologically significant as the letter’s climactic promise. |
| τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (5:11) | to kratos eis tous aiōnas | the dominion/might forever | κράτος = dominion, sovereign power; αἰών = age, eternity | ”to him be the dominion forever” | Closing doxology ascribing eternal sovereign power to God | 权力,直到永永远远 | Low — Standard doxological vocabulary. |
| Σιλουανός, Μᾶρκος (5:12-13) | Silouanos, Markos | Silvanus, Mark | proper names | ”Silvanus… Mark” | Named co-workers in Peter’s circle | 西拉(西勒瓦努)、马可 | Low — Established CUV proper-noun forms (Silvanus = 西拉/西拉法诺,commonly 西拉 following Acts’ Silas identification; Mark = 马可); low doctrinal risk, verify against CUV Acts/Epistles convention. |
| Βαβυλών (5:13) | Babylōn | Babylon | proper name, likely a coded reference to Rome | ”Babylon” | Symbolic/coded designation for the city from which Peter writes, echoing OT Babylon’s role as an oppressive imperial power | 巴比伦 (Bābǐlún) | Medium — Established proper-noun rendering; requires historical-background note that this likely refers symbolically to Rome, not literal Mesopotamian Babylon, to avoid geographic confusion in teaching contexts. |
| φίλημα ἀγάπης (5:14) | philēma agapēs | a kiss of love | a customary greeting gesture | ”the kiss of love,” “a kiss of love” | First-century greeting custom expressing genuine Christian affection among believers | 爱心的亲嘴 | Low — Cultural-custom term; low doctrinal risk, but benefits from a note on functional modern-equivalent greetings (e.g. a warm handshake/embrace) for contemporary application, without altering the translated text itself. |
| εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν Χριστῷ (5:14) | eirēnē hymin pasin tois en Christō | peace to you all who are in Christ | reuse of εἰρήνη (“peace”) + ἐν Χριστῷ (“in Christ”) formula | ”peace to all of you who are in Christ” | Closing benediction combining baseline “peace” (平安) with “in Christ” union language (cf. Romans “Christian Identity in Christ” doctrine) | 愿平安归与你们凡在基督里的人 | Medium — MUST reuse baseline 平安 exactly; “in Christ” (在基督里) formula should be tracked consistently as a recurring identity marker throughout the letter (cf. 3:16, 5:10, 5:14). |
