09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Matthew 1–28 (English → Mandarin)
Methodology
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 3 for the Matthew curriculum. It catalogs, chapter by chapter across the full book, every explicit Old Testament quotation, significant allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern in Matthew, and cross-references each to (a) its OT source, (b) related biblical characters, and (c) the parallel treatment — where one exists — in the Romans curriculum already governed by the baseline Language Package. Every entry is scored for translation sensitivity using the same four-tier framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json (Critical / High / Medium / Low), reflecting risk of syncretism, doctrinal flattening, or cross-curriculum inconsistency — not textual-critical difficulty.
Citation normalization. Per the PRD mandate, citations in this document are given in normalizable English form (“Book Chapter:Verse”, e.g. “Genesis 15:6”, “Matthew 5:3”) for cross-referencing and tooling purposes. Table 0 below extends the baseline’s Mandarin book-name conventions (established for Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, Joel) with every additional OT/NT book required by Matthew’s quotations and allusions. In Phase 2 output, all citations must be converted to the Mandarin form (罗马书3:23-style), per the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules.
Scope. Every chapter of Matthew (1–28) is reviewed. A chapter with no new OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, or typological pattern beyond what is already logged is marked “reviewed — no additional cross-reference entries” rather than omitted.

Section A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation, Allusion, and Messianic-Reference Matrix
Matthew 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 1:1-17 | Davidic and Abrahamic covenant fulfillment; Son of David | Abraham, David, Jesus | OT: Genesis 12:1-3 (Abrahamic promise); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant) | High — genealogy affirms covenant-promise fulfillment, not ancestor-cult lineage; keep 大卫的后裔 (genealogical sense) distinct from the titular 大卫的子孙 (see Ch. 2 below and 08_core_glossary.md #18). |
| Matthew 1:21 | Salvation announced by naming | Joseph, Jesus | NT parallel: Romans 5:9-10; 10:9-13 (salvation through Christ) | Medium — reuse baseline Critical 救恩; this is the Gospel’s first occurrence, anticipating Romans’ fuller exposition of the same doctrine. |
| Matthew 1:23 | Virgin birth; Immanuel; Incarnation | Mary, Jesus | OT: Isaiah 7:14 | Critical — 童女 / 以马内利 (see 08_core_glossary.md #19-20); this Isaiah 7:14 citation must be rendered identically wherever it recurs in any future OT-anchored curriculum. |
Matthew 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 2:1-12 | Gentile worship of the Messiah-King | Magi | NT parallel: Romans 15:8-12 (Gentile inclusion in the Messiah’s reign) | Medium — thematic, not textual, parallel; both anticipate the “Great Commission”/“Unity of Jews and Gentiles” trajectory. |
| Matthew 2:6 | Bethlehem ruler prophecy | — | OT: Micah 5:2 | High — messianic birthplace prophecy; part of Matthew’s 应验 (fulfillment) formula family. |
| Matthew 2:15 | ”Out of Egypt I called my son” — Jesus recapitulates Israel | Jesus, (Israel) | OT: Hosea 11:1 | High — typology: Jesus as true Israel/true Son, reapplying a corporate-Israel text to the individual Messiah; must be taught as typological escalation, not a claim that Hosea originally predicted a virgin-born individual. |
| Matthew 2:16-18 | Slaughter of the innocents; Rachel weeping | Herod, Rachel | OT: Jeremiah 31:15 | Medium — also typological: Herod functions as a new Pharaoh (cf. Exodus 1:15-16 infanticide pattern). |
| Matthew 2:23 | ”He shall be called a Nazarene” | Jesus | OT: possibly Isaiah 11:1 (נֵצֶר/netzer, “branch”) or Judges 13:5, 7 | Medium — the OT referent is disputed even in scholarship; teach the fulfillment claim without asserting false certainty about the exact source text. |
Matthew 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 3:3 | Voice crying in the wilderness | John the Baptist | OT: Isaiah 40:3 | Medium |
| Matthew 3:17 | Divine sonship declared at baptism | Jesus, Father, Holy Spirit | OT allusion: Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 42:1 | Critical — first explicit divine-sonship declaration in the narrative; parallels Romans 1:4’s “declared to be the Son of God”; render 神的儿子 identically to the baseline. |
Matthew 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 4:4 | ”Man shall not live by bread alone” | Jesus, Satan | OT: Deuteronomy 8:3 | High — direct Torah citation used by Jesus himself; wording must match the CUV Deuteronomy text exactly since it is quoted verbatim, not paraphrased. |
| Matthew 4:7 | ”You shall not put the Lord your God to the test” | Jesus, Satan | OT: Deuteronomy 6:16 | High |
| Matthew 4:10 | ”You shall worship the Lord your God” | Jesus, Satan | OT: Deuteronomy 6:13 | Critical — directly reinforces the baseline’s Critical caution on 拜/敬拜 (worship): exclusive worship due to God alone, spoken by Jesus against Satan’s temptation to receive worship himself. |
| Matthew 4:15-16 | Light dawning on Galilee/the Gentiles | — | OT: Isaiah 9:1-2 | Medium — parallel to Romans’ Gentile-inclusion theme (Romans 15:9-12 also draws on Isaiah’s light-to-nations motif). |
Matthew 5 (core passage)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 5:3-10 | Kingdom of Heaven inclusio; Beatitudes reversal of fortune | disciples | OT background: Isaiah 61:1-3 (comfort for mourners; Spirit-anointed proclamation to the poor) | Critical — 有福/天国; see 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A for full verse-by-verse treatment. |
| Matthew 5:5 | The meek shall inherit the earth (direct quotation) | — | OT: Psalm 37:11 | Critical — direct OT quotation embedded inside a Beatitude; 承受地土 rendering must match Psalm 37:11’s CUV wording exactly if Psalms is later covered by another curriculum. |
| Matthew 5:17-18 | Fulfillment, not abolition, of the Law | Jesus | OT: the whole Law and Prophets corpus; NT parallel: Romans 3:31; 10:4 (Christ as the law’s goal) | Critical — must render 成全律法 consistent with Romans’ teaching that Christ fulfills, and thereby upholds, the Law’s righteous intent (cf. Romans 8:4) rather than annulling it. |
| Matthew 5:21-48 | Six antitheses; righteousness exceeding the Pharisees | scribes/Pharisees (implicit) | OT: Exodus 20:13-14; Deuteronomy 5:17-18; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 24:1; Leviticus 19:12; Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 19:18 | Critical — Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself,” 5:43) is a term directly shared with Romans 13:9; see Section D, Rule 1, for the mandatory consistency requirement. |
Matthew 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 6:9-13 | The Lord’s Prayer: Father, kingdom, provision, forgiveness | Jesus, disciples, Father | OT background: reverence for the divine name (cf. Ezekiel 36:23); kingdom-coming petitions echo OT kingdom hope (Psalm 145) | High — 天国/父 combination; Father-language (父) must match Romans 8:15’s 阿爸父 register for cross-curriculum consistency on intimate-yet-reverent address to God. |
| Matthew 6:24 | Mammon as a rival master | — | Cultural: 财神 (God of Wealth) devotional practice | High — see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 6. |

| Matthew 7:28-29 | Astonishment at Jesus’ authoritative teaching | scribes | NT parallel: Romans 1:16 (“the power of God for salvation”) — note distinct Mandarin terms: 权柄 (authority/right to command) is not interchangeable with 神的大能 (power/capability); do not conflate. | High |
Matthew 8
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Matthew 8:11-12 | Gentiles reclining with Abraham; sons of the kingdom cast out | Abraham, Isaac, Jacob | OT allusion: eschatological banquet (Isaiah 25:6); NT parallel: Romans 9-11 (Israel/Gentile reversal) | High — direct thematic parallel to Romans 11’s “hardening… until the full number of the Gentiles”; maintain 外邦人 consistently. |
| Matthew 8:17 | The Servant bears our sicknesses | Jesus | OT: Isaiah 53:4 | Critical — Suffering Servant typology; foundational atonement text shared in principle with Romans 10:16 (Isaiah 53:1) and Romans 15:21 (Isaiah 52:15); see Section D, Rule 3. |
| Matthew 8:20 | Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head | Jesus | OT: Daniel 7:13-14 | Critical — see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 8, glossary #39. |

|---|
| Matthew 9:13 | ”I desire mercy, not sacrifice” | Pharisees | OT: Hosea 6:6 | High — connects the 怜恤/mercy Beatitude (5:7) to Romans’ grace-not-works theme (Romans 11:6): God values mercy over ritual performance, paralleling grace over merit-earning. |

| Matthew 11:14 | ”This is Elijah who is to come” | John the Baptist, Elijah | OT: Malachi 4:5-6 | Critical — typological/prophetic-office identification, not a claim of reincarnation. Given the baseline’s Critical prohibition on 轮回/投胎 for “resurrection,” this verse requires an explicit teaching note: John fulfills the Elijah-forerunner role prophesied by Malachi; he is not the reincarnated soul of Elijah. This is one of the highest cross-cultural mistranslation risks in the whole book. |
| Matthew 11:28-29 | ”Rest for your souls” | Jesus, disciples | OT background: Jeremiah 6:16 | Medium |
Matthew 12
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |

| Matthew 12:39-41 | Sign of Jonah | Jonah, Jesus | OT: Jonah 1:17-2:10; typology of a three-day burial/resurrection | Critical — resurrection typology; must reinforce, never undermine, baseline’s Critical 复活 term; never 轮回/投胎. |

| Matthew 16:16 | ”You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” | Peter | NT parallel: Romans 1:3-4; 9:5 (Christ, Son of God, God over all) | Critical — the Gospel’s apex confession; render 基督 and 神的儿子 exactly per baseline; directly parallels Romans’ Christological thesis statements and must be taught as the same confession Paul assumes throughout Romans. |
| Matthew 16:18 | ”I will build my church… the gates of Hades” | Peter, Jesus | OT allusion: Isaiah 22:22 (keys of the house of David); Job 38:17 (gates of death) | High |

| Matthew 19:18-19 | The commandments; love your neighbor | — | OT: Exodus 20:12-16; Leviticus 19:18 | High — third occurrence of Leviticus 19:18; see Section D, Rule 1. |

| Matthew 27:9-10 | Thirty pieces of silver | Judas | OT: Zechariah 11:12-13 (the Gospel text attributes this to “Jeremiah”) | High — translators must preserve the text’s own “Jeremiah” attribution rather than silently “correcting” it to Zechariah; a teaching note may explain the likely conflated/associative citation without altering the rendered text. |

Section C — Cross-Curriculum Parallels to the Romans Language Package
| Matthew Passage | Shared Theme | Romans Passage | Shared/Related Mandarin Term(s) | Consistency Note |
|---|
| Matthew 1:1-17; 21:9 | Son of David; Davidic covenant | Romans 1:3 | 大卫的后裔 (lineage) / 大卫的子孙 (titular address, Matthew-specific) | Keep the two Mandarin forms distinct in function though both trace to the same doctrine; see 08_core_glossary.md #18. |
| Matthew 3:17; 14:33; 16:16; 17:5; 27:54 | Sonship/Deity of Christ | Romans 1:4; 9:5 | 神的儿子 | Identical term across curricula; baseline Critical risk carries over unchanged. |
| Matthew 5:3-12 | Kingdom of Heaven | Romans 14:17 | 天国 = 神的国 (equivalence) | Cross-reference note from 07_semantic_analysis.md applies: same divine reign, stylistic variation only. |
| Matthew 5:6, 10, 20; 6:33 | Righteousness | Romans 1:17; 3:21-26; 4:1-25 | 义 | Matthew displays righteousness as a craved and lived kingdom-ethic exceeding Pharisaic performance; Romans explains righteousness as a forensic status received by faith. Both meanings are theologically compatible (received righteousness produces lived righteousness) but must be taught as distinct emphases, not merged into one undifferentiated sense of 义. |
| Matthew 5:17-18 | Fulfillment of the Law | Romans 3:31; 8:4; 10:4 | 律法 / 成全 | Christ fulfills, not abolishes, the Law — identical claim in both books; teach as one consistent doctrine. |
| Matthew 5:9; 6:9 | Adoptive sonship of believers | Romans 8:14-17 | 儿子的名分 / 神的儿子 (believers, plural/derivative) vs 阿爸父 | Matthew 5:9’s 称为神的儿子 (see 08_core_glossary.md #12) must retain the same derivative/adoptive distinction from Christ’s unique Sonship that Romans 8:14-17 establishes; teach the two passages together as one doctrine. |
| Matthew 9:13; 12:7 | Mercy over ritual/works | Romans 11:6 | 怜恤 / 恩典 | Both texts subordinate external religious performance to God’s character-driven mercy/grace; reinforce, do not duplicate, the grace-vs-merit teaching point. |
| Matthew 8:11-12; 28:19 | Gentile inclusion; universal scope | Romans 3:29-30; 10:12-13; 15:8-12 | 外邦人 / 万民 | See Rule 5 below — 万民 (Matthew’s Great Commission term) is comprehensively inclusive and distinct from 外邦人 (non-Jewish peoples specifically); both curricula together teach the full “no distinction” doctrine. |
| Matthew 16:16 | Apex Christological confession | Romans 1:3-4; 9:5; 10:9 | 基督 / 主 / 神的儿子 | Matthew 16:16 and Romans 10:9 together form the two great confessional summits of the NT curriculum; both must render 基督 and 主 identically. |
| Matthew 20:28; 26:28 | Atonement; ransom; forgiveness of sins | Romans 3:24-25; 5:15 | 赎价 / 罪的赦免 vs 恩典 / 称义 | See Rule 4 below. |
| Matthew 21:42 | Cornerstone; the church’s foundation | Romans 9:33 (background; not in this curriculum’s scope but relevant for future cross-reference) | 房角石 | Flag for future curricula: Romans 9:33 quotes the same Isaiah 28:16/Psalm 118 stone tradition. |
| Matthew 22:37-40 | Great Commandment; love fulfills the Law | Romans 13:8-10 | 爱 / 律法 | See Rule 1 below — direct shared quotation. |
| Matthew 22:44 | Christ’s Lordship from Psalm 110:1 | (Referenced elsewhere in the NT canon, not within Romans directly) | 主 | Retain for future consistency across any curriculum that treats Psalm 110 or Hebrews. |
| Matthew 24:1-25:46 | Judgment and the end of the age | Romans 2:5-11; 14:10-12 | 审判 | Both books teach a personal, forensic, final judgment by God/Christ, not an impersonal karmic process (报应); reinforce consistently. |
| Matthew 27:46 | The cry of dereliction | Romans 8:3; 3:25 | (no single shared term; thematic) | Christ bearing the judgment against sin unites both passages; teach together as one atonement doctrine. |
| Matthew 28:18-20 | Great Commission; obedience of faith among the nations | Romans 1:5; 16:26 | 因信而生的顺服 / 万民 | Matthew supplies the commissioning event; Romans describes its ongoing fruit (“the obedience of faith… among all nations”). Teach as cause and continuing effect of one divine program. |
Section D — Mandatory Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
Rule 1 — Leviticus 19:18 (“Love your neighbor as yourself”).
Quoted in Matthew 5:43; 19:19; 22:39, and in Romans 13:9. The Mandarin rendering 爱人如己 (established CUV phrase) must be used identically in every occurrence across both curricula. Any Phase 2 segment translating one of these five verses must load and check against the other four before finalizing.
Rule 2 — Decalogue citations (Exodus 20:12-16 / Deuteronomy 5:16-20).
Quoted in Matthew 15:4; 19:18, and in Romans 13:9. Use the fixed CUV formulas exactly: 不可杀人 (“you shall not murder”), 不可奸淫 (“you shall not commit adultery”), 不可偷盗 (“you shall not steal”), 不可贪恋 (“you shall not covet”), 当孝敬父母 (“honor your father and mother”). Do not vary phrasing or word order between the two curricula.
Rule 3 — Isaiah 53 (the Suffering Servant).
Matthew 8:17 quotes Isaiah 53:4; Romans 10:16 quotes Isaiah 53:1; Romans 15:21 quotes Isaiah 52:15 (same Servant Song unit). Maintain a single consistent Mandarin designation for this figure — 神的仆人 (“the Servant of the LORD”) — and render the recurring “bore/carried” verb family (背负/担当) consistently across all three occurrences, since together they form the shared atonement anchor text for both curricula.
Rule 4 — Ransom, redemption, and grace vocabulary (Matthew 20:28; 26:28 / Romans 3:24-25).
赎价 (ransom, Matthew 20:28) and 罪的赦免 (forgiveness of sins, Matthew 26:28) must always be taught within the same grace-not-merit framework the baseline establishes for 恩典 and 称义. Any teaching note accompanying these Matthew passages should explicitly cross-reference Romans 3:24-25 so that “ransom” is never presented as a payment the believer contributes toward, but as Christ’s own substitutionary provision, received by faith apart from works — consistent with the baseline’s Critical grace/merit distinction (功德, rejected).
Rule 5 — “All nations” (Matthew 28:19; 24:14) versus “Gentiles” (baseline 外邦人).
万民 (all nations/peoples, comprehensively inclusive of Jew and Gentile alike) must never be silently merged with or substituted for 外邦人 (specifically non-Jewish peoples, as used throughout Romans). Where a single teaching unit discusses both the Great Commission (Matthew 28) and Jew-Gentile unity (Romans 3:29-30; 10:12-13), both terms must appear with their distinct scope made explicit.
Rule 6 — Psalm 22 and the cry of dereliction (Matthew 27:46).
Render “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” with full emotional and theological weight — 我的神,我的神,为什么离弃我? — never softened into a rhetorical or merely poetic lament. This is the same personal God (神) whose wrath against sin Romans 3:25 and 8:3 describe Christ as bearing; treat both passages as describing a single atoning event.
Rule 7 — Genesis quotations shared with any future Genesis-anchored curriculum (Matthew 19:4-5; cf. Genesis 15:6 background to Matthew 1:1-2/3:9).
Genesis 1:27 and 2:24 (Matthew 19:4-5) must be rendered to match whatever conventions a future Genesis curriculum establishes. Abraham’s role in Matthew (covenant-lineage ancestor, 1:1-2; 3:9; 8:11; 22:32) and in Romans (paradigm of justification by faith, ch. 4) are complementary, not competing, uses of the same historical figure — Abraham’s name (亚伯拉罕) is already fixed in the baseline and requires no change, but teaching materials must clarify the two distinct doctrinal emphases explicitly wherever both curricula are studied together.
Section E — Chapters Reviewed with No Additional Cross-Reference Entries
The following chapters were fully reviewed for OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, and typology beyond what is already logged above or in 07_semantic_analysis.md; no further entries are warranted: none — every chapter of Matthew (1–28) contains at least one load-bearing cross-reference, logged above. (Matthew 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 23 contain comparatively fewer entries but are not silent; all are represented in Section A.)
This document must be loaded alongside 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md before Phase 1 Step 4 (theme mapping) and before any Phase 2 segment translation touching an OT quotation, allusion, or Romans-curriculum parallel identified above.
