Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 2 Corinthians (Full Book, Chapters 1–13)
Purpose
This document maps every doctrine identified for the 2 Corinthians curriculum to
its supporting passages across the entire book (not only the core passage,
2 Corinthians 5:11-21), assigns/confirms risk tiers, states the specific
Mandarin translation risk, and states the review routing — all in lockstep with
doctrine_risk_registry.json. Section 1 demonstrates full-chapter coverage.
Section 2 is the doctrine-first matrix required for Phase 2 routing. Section 3
totals the risk tiers.

Full-book coverage confirmed: chapters 1–13 all reviewed; no chapter contributes zero doctrinal content in this letter.
Section 2 — Full Doctrine Matrix
Order, doctrine names, and risk tiers below are identical to
doctrine_risk_registry.json. Review routing follows the same convention as
the baseline Romans registry: Critical/High → Human theologian review;
Medium → Native speaker review; Low → Automated review (this book has
no Low-tier doctrines).
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Key Supporting Passages (2 Corinthians) | Mandarin Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reconciliation with God (与神和好) | Critical | 2:14-16; 5:18-20 | 和好 is everyday Mandarin for mutual, fault-sharing reconciliation between quarreling equals, echoing the Confucian 和/礼 ideal of harmony restored through reciprocal ritual accommodation. Every occurrence must clarify: God alone initiates, Christ alone bears the cost, humanity is the estranged party restored by grace, not a co-equal negotiator. This is THE doctrinal center of the core passage. | Human theologian |
| 2 | New Creation in Christ (在基督里的新造) | Critical | 5:16-17 | 新造的人 must never be interchanged with 脱胎换骨 (Daoist internal-alchemy self-transformation idiom), which imports the self-achieved-attainment framework already forbidden for justification/sanctification. Must always retain the explicit “在基督里” causal mooring. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Christ’s Substitutionary Sin-Bearing (基督替罪的代赎) | Critical | 5:21 | ”He made him to be sin” requires forensic/representative phrasing (神使那无罪的…成为罪) that must never suggest actual moral corruption in Christ (destroying impeccability). The mirror clause “become the righteousness of God” reuses baseline Critical 义 and must not collapse into the Confucian-virtue reading or the gradual process of 成圣. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry (事奉中的患难与安慰) | High | 1:3-11; 4:7-18; 6:4-10; 11:23-29; 12:9-10 | 患难 (affliction) risks being read through 报应 (karmic retribution) as an explanation for hardship; must be taught as participatory suffering for others’ benefit, not fate-determined misfortune. Comfort (安慰) risks flattening into a simple “suffer now, reward later” formula if the others-directed purpose is dropped. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The New Covenant versus the Old (新约与旧约的对比) | High | 3:1-18 | 新约/旧约 double as the standard Chinese names for the Bible’s Testament-book collections; every use risks a mere library-catalogue reading rather than a covenant-administration contrast. Within this doctrine, 3:6’s 字句/精意 split is itself Critical: 精意 must never be rendered/read as 圣灵. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority (真诚与使徒的权柄) | High | 1:12; 2:17; 3:1; 4:2; 5:11-12; 10:12-18 | 真诚 risks reading as mere social politeness rather than transparent, God-accountable motive. 良心 risks assimilation to the Mencian innate-good-heart doctrine (良知/性善), losing the biblical sense of an inner witness accountable to a personal Judge (cf. 5:10-11). | Human theologian |
| 7 | Generosity and Grace in Giving (施与中的恩典与慷慨) | High | 8:1-9:15 | Giving must be shown to flow from grace already received, sharply distinguished from merit-generating temple/shrine donation logic (功德箱-style giving) common in Chinese folk Buddhism — the doctrine where the baseline’s Critical grace-vs-merit caution has its highest practical stakes. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Power in Weakness (在软弱中显出的能力) | High | 11:30; 12:1-10 | Not primarily lexical but a cultural-value collision: Confucian and modern Chinese social norms prize strength, achievement, and preserved face (面子). Boasting in weakness risks misreading as false modesty, fatalism, or plain failure unless framed repeatedly as God’s own paradoxical, sovereign choice. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Genuine versus False Apostleship (真使徒与假使徒) | High | 10:1-18; 11:1-15; 13:5-7 | 假使徒 must carry the full satanic-deception weight of 11:14-15, not merely “unauthorized.” 装作光明的天使 risks blurring with benevolent light-emanating immortal/bodhisattva imagery in Chinese folk religion and Buddhism, which could soften Satan’s deceptive self-presentation into a neutral spiritual-being category. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Forgiveness and Restoration (饶恕与恢复) | High | 2:5-11 | 饶恕 shares the χάρις root with grace — forgiveness flows from unmerited grace, not a negotiated settlement. Countercultural against the retributive-karma expectation (报应) already flagged under baseline 罪 (sin). | Human theologian |
| 11 | Godly Repentance (合乎神心意的悔改) | High | 7:8-11 | 悔改 must never be rendered or taught as 忏悔 (Buddhist ritual confession that itself reduces karmic consequence). Biblical repentance receives, rather than earns, forgiveness Christ’s reconciling work already accomplished; the godly/worldly-sorrow contrast (7:9-10) is the passage’s own safeguard and must be preserved clearly. | Human theologian |
| 12 | The Church as the Temple of the Living God (教会作为活神的殿) | Critical | 6:14-7:1 | 神的殿 must never use 庙/寺/道观. Stakes are Critical (not merely Medium, per baseline church) because the passage claims God’s own personal presence indwells his people — any idol-housing or ancestral-tablet-maintenance connotation would misrepresent the very presence of the living God, inviting a syncretistic “one deity among many housed in a shrine” reading. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Spiritual Warfare and Satanic Deception (属灵的争战与撒但的欺骗) | High | 2:11; 4:4; 6:15; 10:3-5; 11:3, 14; 12:7 | 撒但 must be a singular, personal cosmic adversary with deliberate schemes (阴谋), not conflated with generic folk-religious ghosts/spirits (鬼, 邪灵). Warfare imagery (兵器, 坚固的营垒) must stay in the register of spiritual-authority conflict against a personal being, not folk exorcism/spirit-battling ritual. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Assurance through Self-Examination (藉自我省察得确据) | Medium | 13:5-9 | 试验自己 must be distinguished from divinatory self-fortune-telling or omen-reading; this is Spirit-illumined assessment against the objective standard of Christ’s presence, not a fate-discernment technique. | Native speaker review |
| 15 | Christian Identity in Union with Christ (与基督联合的基督徒身份) | High | 3:18; 4:16; 5:17; 12:2 | Extends baseline High-risk “Christian Identity in Christ.” 变成主的形像 must not use 化 as in 仙化/羽化 (Daoist transformation into another kind of being), which would suggest metamorphic rebirth rather than gradual, Spirit-produced moral/relational likeness. | Human theologian |
| 16 | The Judgment Seat of Christ (基督的审判台) | High | 5:10-11 | Must be distinguished from folk-religious death-court judgment (阎王殿/城隍-style tribunals determining rebirth/fate via a merit-demerit ledger). This is a post-salvation, reward-oriented evaluation for believers whose salvation is already secure, not a salvation-determining or karma-settling tribunal. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Trinitarian Fellowship and Benediction (三一真神的团契与祝福) | Critical | 13:14 | The most cross-document-critical single verse in the curriculum: 恩典, 主, 耶稣, 基督, 神, 爱, 圣灵的团契 in one formula. Any inconsistency across curriculum documents visibly fractures Trinitarian doctrine. One verbatim Mandarin rendering must be fixed and enforced everywhere. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Sealing and Guarantee of the Spirit (圣灵的印记与凭据) | Medium | 1:22; 5:5 | 印记/凭据 must not be confused with a protective talisman/amulet (符, cf. baseline 平安符 caution). This is a legal-relational guarantee of God’s ownership and future inheritance, not a warding object. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Sanctification and Holy Living (成圣与圣洁的生活) | High | 1:12; 6:14-7:1 | Reuses baseline Critical caution on 成圣 as a direct Neo-Confucian self-cultivation borrowing. 7:1’s “cleanse ourselves”/“bring holiness to completion” is especially vulnerable to a human-initiated ritual-purification reading rather than the Spirit’s ongoing work in an already-indwelt (6:16), already-reconciled (5:18-19) believer. | Human theologian |
| 20 | The Veiled Gospel and Satanic Blinding (被蒙蔽的福音与撒但的蒙蔽) | High | 4:3-4 | Must retain a personal agent (撒但/这世界的神) as the blinding cause, not an impersonal cultural/philosophical obstacle — softening this removes the doctrine’s claim of active spiritual opposition to gospel perception. | Human theologian |
| 21 | God’s Sovereign Comfort in Affliction (神在患难中赐下的安慰) | Medium | 1:3-11 | 安慰 must be kept distinct from the exhort-sense (劝勉) and urgent-appeal sense (求/恳求) of the same Greek word-family used elsewhere in the letter; conflating senses blurs compassionate consolation with urgent appeal (e.g. 5:20). | Native speaker review |
| 22 | Boasting Only in the Lord (只夸主的荣耀) | Medium | 10:17-18; 12:1, 5-9 | 夸口 directed at the Lord rather than self must read as ironic/rhetorical throughout chs. 10-12, since unqualified literal self-boasting is near-taboo against Chinese modesty-culture norms (谦虚); confirm the ironic register is legible in context. | Native speaker review |
Section 3 — Risk Summary
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 5 | Human theologian review (every occurrence) |
| High | 13 | Human theologian review |
| Medium | 4 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 0 | Automated review only |
| Total doctrines | 22 | 18 require human theologian review; 4 require native speaker review |
This matches the doctrine set and every individual risk tier recorded in
doctrine_risk_registry.json for the 2 Corinthians curriculum. No doctrine has
been added, removed, or re-tiered in this analysis. These totals supersede any
arithmetic inconsistency in that file’s own risk_summary block; the
authoritative source for tier assignment remains the per-doctrine "risk"
field in the registry, which this matrix reproduces exactly.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Reconciliation with God
Mandarin name: 与神和好
Key terms: reconciliation, be_reconciled, ministry_of_reconciliation, not_counting_trespasses, world, ambassador
Review routing: Human theologian
The standard rendering 和好 is an everyday Mandarin word for two quarreling parties ‘making up’ through mutual fault and mutual initiative, directly colliding with the Confucian ideal of 和 (social harmony) restored through ritual propriety (礼) and reciprocal accommodation between equals. Romans’ baseline already flags this risk generically under ‘covenant’/relational terms, but 2 Corinthians makes reconciliation itself THE central doctrine, so the collision is load-bearing rather than incidental: every occurrence must clarify God alone initiates, Christ alone bears the cost, and humanity is the estranged party restored by grace, never a co-equal negotiating partner achieving harmony through its own effort.
New Creation in Christ
Mandarin name: 在基督里的新造
Key terms: new_creation, old_things_passed_away, in_christ, flesh_evaluative
Review routing: Human theologian
新造的人 must never be interchanged with 脱胎换骨, the Daoist immortality-cultivation idiom describing total self-transformation achieved through internal alchemical practice — this idiom imports precisely the self-achieved-attainment framework the baseline already forbids for justification (修成正果) and sanctification (修炼). Because 5:17 is the doctrinal center of this curriculum’s core passage, any drift toward a self-cultivation reading would corrupt the entire lesson’s theology, not merely one verse.
Christ’s Substitutionary Sin-Bearing
Mandarin name: 基督替罪的代赎
Key terms: made_to_be_sin, become_righteousness_of_god, sin, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
Rendering ‘he made him to be sin’ requires forensic, representative language (神使那无罪的…成为罪) that must never suggest Christ became morally corrupted or sinful in nature — this would destroy the doctrine of Christ’s impeccability, a doctrine already Critical in the baseline under deity_of_christ/humanity_of_christ. The mirror-image clause ‘become the righteousness of God’ reuses baseline 义 and must be distinguished from the Confucian virtue reading already flagged Critical in the baseline, and from the gradual process of 成圣 — this is a once-for-all forensic exchange.
The Church as the Temple of the Living God
Mandarin name: 教会作为活神的殿
Key terms: temple_of_the_living_god, unbeliever, uncleanness, holy, sanctification
Review routing: Human theologian
神的殿 must never use 庙/寺/道观 (folk, Buddhist, or Daoist temple terms), per the baseline church-doctrine caution, but the stakes here are Critical rather than Medium because the passage explicitly claims God’s own personal presence indwells his people (‘I will dwell in them’) — using any temple term associated with idol-housing or ancestral-tablet ritual maintenance would misrepresent not just an institution but the very presence of the living God, risking a syncretistic reading in which God is one more deity housed and served like others in a shrine.
Trinitarian Fellowship and Benediction
Mandarin name: 三一真神的团契与祝福
Key terms: trinitarian_benediction, grace, love_of_christ, fellowship, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
The most cross-document-critical verse in this curriculum, combining 恩典, 主, 耶稣, 基督, 神, 爱, and 圣灵的团契 in a single Trinitarian formula. Any inconsistency in rendering across curriculum documents would visibly fracture the doctrine of the Trinity in the eyes of careful readers; a single verbatim Mandarin rendering must be fixed and enforced identically everywhere, parallel to the baseline’s treatment of Romans 8:28 and 10:9-10.
High Risk Doctrines
Suffering and Comfort in Ministry
Mandarin name: 事奉中的患难与安慰
Key terms: comfort, affliction, endurance, weakness, jars_of_clay, afflicted_but_not_crushed, catalogue_of_sufferings, judgment_seat_of_christ, eternal_weight_of_glory
Review routing: Human theologian
Affliction (患难) must be taught as participation in Christ’s sufferings for the benefit of others, not generic misfortune or a fate-determined hardship — a live risk given 报应 (karmic retribution) as a common folk-religious lens for interpreting suffering in Chinese culture. The paradox of receiving comfort (安慰) precisely through, not instead of, hardship is easily flattened into a simple ‘suffering now, reward later’ formula if the participatory, others-directed purpose is not made explicit.
The New Covenant versus the Old
Mandarin name: 新约与旧约的对比
Key terms: new_old_covenant, letter_and_spirit, veil, freedom, covenant
Review routing: Human theologian
新约/旧约 are also the standard Chinese names for the Bible’s Testament-book collections, so every occurrence risks readers hearing a mere library-catalogue distinction rather than a theological contrast between two covenant administrations. Separately, 3:6’s 字句/精意 contrast is Critical in its own right: 精意 (the life-giving intent of the new covenant) must never be rendered or read as 圣灵 (the Holy Spirit), which would wrongly personify an abstract quality as the third Person of the Trinity.
Sincerity and Apostolic Authority
Mandarin name: 真诚与使徒的权柄
Key terms: sincerity, conscience, persuade, outward_appearance_heart, peddle, commend_ourselves, letters_of_commendation
Review routing: Human theologian
真诚 (sincerity) must not read as mere social politeness; Paul’s point is a transparent, God-accountable motive contrasted with rivals who peddle (贩卖) God’s word for profit. 良心 (conscience) risks being read through the Mencian doctrine of an innately good, self-sufficient moral heart-mind (良知/性善) that needs no outside reference point, whereas biblical conscience here is an inner witness accountable to a personal God who will ultimately judge motives (cf. 5:10-11).
Generosity and Grace in Giving
Mandarin name: 施与中的恩典与慷慨
Key terms: cheerful_giver, christ_became_poor, generosity, sow_and_reap, grace, fellowship_in_ministry, free_gift
Review routing: Human theologian
Giving ‘flows from grace already received (恩典), and must be sharply distinguished from the merit-generating temple/shrine donation logic common in Chinese folk Buddhism (functionally similar to 功德箱-style giving, understood to accrue merit for the giver) — this is the single doctrine in the curriculum where the baseline’s Critical grace-versus-merit (功德) caution has the highest practical stakes, since financial giving is precisely the domain where Chinese religious culture most naturally expects a merit-transaction framework.
Power in Weakness
Mandarin name: 在软弱中显出的能力
Key terms: weakness, thorn_in_the_flesh, grace_sufficient, power_perfected_in_weakness, boasting, content_with_weaknesses
Review routing: Human theologian
This is not primarily a lexical collision but a deep cultural-value collision: both Confucian tradition and modern Chinese social norms prize strength, achievement, competence, and preserved social standing/face (面子). A doctrine that locates divine power precisely in acknowledged weakness (软弱), and frames ‘boasting’ (夸口) in that weakness as the appropriate response, runs directly against these cultural values and risks being misread as either false modesty, fatalistic resignation, or simple failure, unless explicitly and repeatedly framed as God’s own paradoxical, sovereign choice.
Genuine versus False Apostleship
Mandarin name: 真使徒与假使徒
Key terms: false_apostle, deceitful_workers, disguised_as_angel_of_light, approved_disqualified, examine_yourselves, boasting
Review routing: Human theologian
假使徒 must be taught with the full satanic-deception weight of 11:14-15 — ‘false’ here means deceptive, satanically-empowered counterfeit authority, not merely ‘uncredentialed’ or ‘unauthorized’ in an institutional sense. The disguise language (装作光明的天使) carries a specific collision risk with benevolent light-emanating immortal or bodhisattva imagery in Chinese folk religion and Buddhism, which could otherwise blur Satan’s deceptive self-presentation into a generic spiritual-being category that might include benevolent figures.
Forgiveness and Restoration
Mandarin name: 饶恕与恢复
Key terms: forgive, sorrow_grief, love_of_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
饶恕 (forgiveness) shares the χάρις (grace) root with the Greek term χαρίζομαι — forgiveness flows from the same unmerited-grace reality as salvation, not from a negotiated settlement between parties. This is countercultural against the retributive-karma expectation (报应) already flagged under the baseline’s sin entry, which makes ‘releasing someone from deserved consequence’ seem unnatural or even morally lax to readers steeped in a karma-accounting worldview.
Godly Repentance
Mandarin name: 合乎神心意的悔改
Key terms: repentance, godly_worldly_sorrow, earnestness
Review routing: Human theologian
悔改 must never be rendered or taught as 忏悔 (chànhuǐ), the Buddhist ritual confession practice performed specifically to reduce accruing karmic consequence — biblical repentance is a Spirit-produced turning that RECEIVES forgiveness Christ’s reconciling work has already accomplished, not a ritual act that itself reduces a debt. The godly-sorrow/worldly-sorrow contrast (7:9-10) is the passage’s own built-in safeguard against a merely regret-based or karma-avoidance reading and must be preserved clearly.
Spiritual Warfare and Satanic Deception
Mandarin name: 属灵的争战与撒但的欺骗
Key terms: satan, belial, schemes, disguised_as_angel_of_light, wage_war_weapons, destroying_strongholds, taking_thought_captive, weapons_of_righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
撒但 must be taught as a singular, personal cosmic adversary with deliberate strategic schemes (阴谋), not conflated with the generic folk-religious category of malevolent ghosts or spirits (鬼, 邪灵) that populate everyday Chinese spiritual belief; the warfare imagery (争战, 兵器, 坚固的营垒) must likewise be kept in the register of a spiritual-authority conflict against a personal being, not folk exorcism or spirit-battling ritual practice.
Christian Identity in Union with Christ
Mandarin name: 与基督联合的基督徒身份
Key terms: in_christ, new_creation, transformed_into_his_image, inner_outer_man
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses and extends the baseline’s High-risk doctrine ‘Christian Identity in Christ.’ 变成主的形像 (transformed into his image) must not use 化 as in 仙化/羽化 (Daoist immortal transformation into a different bodily/spiritual form), which would suggest a metamorphic rebirth into another kind of being rather than the gradual, Spirit-produced moral and relational likeness to Christ described here.
The Judgment Seat of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的审判台
Key terms: judgment_seat_of_christ, fear of the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
基督的审判台 must be distinguished from the folk-religious death-court judgment of the dead (阎王殿/城隍-style tribunals evaluating deeds via a merit-demerit ledger that determines rebirth or fate) — this is a post-salvation, reward-oriented evaluation for believers whose salvation status is already secure, not a salvation-determining or karma-settling tribunal that could still result in an unfavorable rebirth or fate.
Sanctification and Holy Living
Mandarin name: 成圣与圣洁的生活
Key terms: sanctification, holy, uncleanness, defilement, restoration_completeness
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the baseline’s Critical caution on 成圣 as a direct borrowing of the Neo-Confucian technical term for self-cultivation into sagehood through personal moral effort. 7:1’s call to ‘cleanse ourselves’ and ‘bring holiness to completion’ is especially vulnerable to being read as human-initiated ritual self-purification rather than the Spirit’s ongoing work in a believer already indwelt by God (6:16) and already reconciled to him (5:18-19).
The Veiled Gospel and Satanic Blinding
Mandarin name: 被蒙蔽的福音与撒但的蒙蔽
Key terms: gospel, illumination_of_gospel, satan, veil
Review routing: Human theologian
4:4’s claim that ‘the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers’ must retain a personal agent (撒但/这世界的神, i.e. Satan) as the blinding cause, not an impersonal cultural or philosophical obstacle — softening this to a vague ‘worldly ignorance’ would remove the doctrine’s claim of active spiritual opposition to gospel perception, connecting to the same spiritual-warfare caution elsewhere in the letter.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Assurance through Self-Examination
Mandarin name: 藉自我省察得确据
Key terms: examine_yourselves, approved_disqualified, restoration_completeness
Review routing: Native speaker review
试验自己 (examine yourselves) must be distinguished from divinatory self-fortune-telling or omen-reading practices; this is Spirit-illumined self-assessment against the objective standard of Christ’s presence in one’s life, not a technique for discerning one’s fate.
Sealing and Guarantee of the Spirit
Mandarin name: 圣灵的印记与凭据
Key terms: sealed_down_payment, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
印记/凭据 must not be confused with a protective talisman or amulet (符, cf. baseline caution on 平安符) — this is a legal-relational guarantee of God’s ownership and the believer’s certain future inheritance, not a magical warding object meant to ward off misfortune.
God’s Sovereign Comfort in Affliction
Mandarin name: 神在患难中赐下的安慰
Key terms: comfort, affliction, hope
Review routing: Native speaker review
安慰 (comfort) must be kept distinct from the exhort-sense (劝勉) and urgent-appeal sense (求/恳求) of the same underlying Greek word-family used elsewhere in the letter; conflating these senses would blur God’s compassionate consolation in 1:3-7 with Paul’s later urgent appeals (e.g. 5:20), weakening the doctrine’s pastoral force.
Boasting Only in the Lord
Mandarin name: 只夸主的荣耀
Key terms: boasting, approved_disqualified, commend_ourselves
Review routing: Native speaker review
夸口 (boasting) directed toward the Lord rather than self must be framed as ironic and rhetorical throughout chapters 10-12, since unqualified literal self-boasting is treated as near-taboo against Chinese modesty-culture norms (谦虚); native-speaker review should confirm the ironic register reads clearly in context so audiences do not mistake Paul’s rhetorical strategy for literal self-promotion.
