Doctrine Analysis

Malachi — Full-Book Doctrine Analysis Matrix

Curriculum: Malachi (chapters 1–4, English versification) Core passage: Malachi 3:1–4 Destination language: Mandarin (Simplified Chinese, CUV 神版 register) Purpose: PRD Phase 1 Step 4 deliverable. This matrix is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — identical doctrine set, identical risk tiers, identical review routing. It extends that registry into a chapter-by-chapter, section-by-section coverage record so that every verse range in Malachi is explicitly accounted for, per the full-book-coverage mandate. Sections that carry no new doctrine or Critical/High term are marked “Reviewed — no new doctrinal flag” rather than omitted.

Chapter 1

VersesDoctrineSupporting Passages (this book)Risk LevelTranslation Risk NotesReview Routing
1:1(Superscription: “the word of the LORD… by Malachi”)1:1LowReviewed — no new doctrinal flag. Uses baseline terms 先知/耶和华; establishes prophetic-oracle genre (מַשָּׂא, “burden/oracle”) — low collision risk if rendered as a solemn divine pronouncement rather than a generic message.Automated review
1:2–5God’s Unchanging Love for His People1:2–5 (also 3:6, 3:17)Critical”I have loved you” (爱) vs. “Esau I have hated” (恨恶) is covenantal-election idiom, not psychological affection/hatred; Romans 9:13 quotes 1:2–3 directly and requires cross-reference consistency. Central risk: collapse into merit-accounting worldview (功德/阴德) where love is read as earned rather than sovereignly given.Human theologian
1:6–14Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant1:6–14 (also 2:1–9)HighBlemished/defective offerings (供物) as contempt for a personal covenant God, not procedural sloppiness; must not be read through ancestor-table (供桌) reciprocal-appeasement logic.Human theologian
1:11, 1:14The Vision of Universal Worship Among the Nations1:11, 1:14Critical焚香 (“burn incense”) is the single most visually loaded ritual act in Chinese folk religion/Buddhism/Daoism; mandatory clarifying note that this describes future exclusive worship of YHWH among the nations, not a general endorsement of incense-ritual across traditions. 大君王 (great King, 1:14) must avoid 天下共主-flavored framing (cf. baseline’s 神的国 caution).Human theologian

Chapter 2

VersesDoctrineSupporting Passages (this book)Risk LevelTranslation Risk NotesReview Routing
2:1–9The Covenant of Levi and Corrupted Priestly Instruction2:1–9HighPriestly 训诲 (instruction) must be distinguished from Confucian 礼教 (ritual-propriety/status instruction); judicial 咒诅 (curse) on the priesthood distinguished from folk magical curse-casting (下咒/施咒). Requires OT priestly-office background note (利未的子孙).Human theologian
2:10–16Faithfulness in Tithing and Marriage (marriage component)2:10–16 (tithing component at 3:8–12)High行诡诈 (act treacherously) as relational covenant-betrayal verb applied to both God and spouse; frames the whole marriage section as covenant-breaking rather than mere social misconduct.Human theologian
2:13–16The Marriage Covenant and the Sin of Divorce2:13–16HighGod’s own witness-role (见证) elevates marriage to covenantal, not contractual, status. 休妻 (traditional CUV rendering of “divorce/put away”) directly overlaps with the historic Chinese unilateral husband-divorce right (七出); mandatory note that the passage condemns covenant treachery, not merely unregulated divorce practice. 虔诚的后裔 (“godly offspring,” 2:15) requires a note distinguishing this adjectival use from the rejected rendering of πίστις/“faith” as 虔诚 in the baseline.Human theologian
2:17(Transition: “You have wearied the LORD with your words”)2:17MediumReviewed — no new doctrinal flag; functions as rhetorical bridge into chapter 3’s messenger oracle. Cross-reference to Call to Repentance and Coming Messenger doctrines recommended in teaching notes, but no new Critical/High term is introduced here.Native speaker review

Chapter 3

VersesDoctrineSupporting Passages (this book)Risk LevelTranslation Risk NotesReview Routing
3:1–4The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord3:1–4 (also 4:1, 4:5)CriticalTwo distinct figures in 3:1 — the human forerunner 使者 and the divine 立约的使者 (“messenger of the covenant”) — must never be collapsed into one figure or read as 天使 (angel). 主 (Lord, 3:1) requires a forward-linking note to the NT Lordship confession.Human theologian
3:2–4Refining Judgment of God’s People3:2–4High炼净的火 (refiner’s fire) and launderer’s-soap imagery describe corrective, restorative judgment on God’s own priesthood, not punitive annihilation (地狱之火); 炼净/洁净 must not be read as self-cultivated ritual purity (清净). This section also anchors 义/公义 in a justification-adjacent context — apply the baseline’s mandatory Confucian-virtue distinguishing note.Human theologian
3:5Warning Against Occult Practice and Moral Corruption3:5High行邪术的 (sorcerer) is a live pastoral issue given continuing fortune-telling/mediumship/geomancy practice in Chinese culture; frame as covenant offense against the one true God, sharpening the baseline’s existing 算卦/占卜 distinction.Human theologian
3:6God’s Unchanging Character3:6Critical我总不改变 must be taught as personal, relational, covenant-keeping constancy of 耶和华, never assimilated to impersonal 天道 (cosmic Way) or to mechanical natural-law fatalism. Anchor verse for the curriculum’s first doctrine cluster.Human theologian
3:7The Call to Repentance before the Great Day3:7 (also 3:5, 4:6)High转向/归向 (“return”) emphasizes relational turning-back over inward remorse alone (契约关系性 vs. 悔改’s emphasis on interior contrition); cross-reference to NT repentance doctrine required.Human theologian
3:8–12Faithfulness in Tithing and Marriage (tithing component)3:8–12 (marriage component at 2:10–16)High夺取 (“rob/defraud [God]”) is vivid covenant-unfaithfulness language, not institutional-quota failure nor a feed into a cosmic merit-ledger; 十一奉献 and 试验 (God’s limited, self-initiated invitation to be tested) must not be read as folk vow-and-repay bargaining (许愿还愿).Human theologian
3:13–15(Transition: the arrogance of those who say “it is vain to serve God”)3:13–15MediumReviewed — no new doctrinal flag; sets up the righteous/wicked contrast resolved in 3:16–18 and 4:1–3. Ensure register preserves the complainants’ cynicism accurately without softening.Native speaker review
3:16–18God’s Remembrance of the Faithful Remnant3:16–18Critical纪念册 (“book of remembrance”) structurally collides with the Chinese folk-morality merit/demerit ledger (功过簿/功过格) — same class of Critical risk as grace vs. 功德 in the baseline. Must be taught as God’s personal, relational, grace-grounded remembrance, never a merit-tally. 敬畏耶和华的人 (those who fear the LORD) marks the faithful remnant by reverent awe, not ritual observance.Human theologian
3:18Divine Justice: The Distinction Between the Righteous and the Wicked3:18 (also 4:1, 4:3)Critical义人/恶人 reuses the Critical-risk 义 root; apply the identical Confucian-virtue distinguishing note used throughout the curriculum.Human theologian

Chapter 4

VersesDoctrineSupporting Passages (this book)Risk LevelTranslation Risk NotesReview Routing
4:1Divine Justice: The Distinction Between the Righteous and the Wicked (continued) / The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord (continued)4:1 (also 3:18, 4:3; and 3:1–4)Critical”The day is coming” (耶和华的日子) must not be assimilated to almanac auspicious/inauspicious day selection (择日); burning imagery (root and branch) is decisive, once-for-all judgment, not a cyclical dynastic-renewal image (治乱循环).Human theologian
4:2–3The Sun of Righteousness and Healing4:2–3Critical公义的日头 double risk: (1) reuses Critical-risk 义 root — God’s own vindicating righteousness, not human moral achievement; (2) solar imagery risks assimilation to folk astral-deity veneration (e.g. 太阳星君). Must be taught as metaphor for God’s righteous vindication, never an astral power in its own right. 4:3’s righteous/wicked contrast again invokes Divine Justice doctrine.Human theologian
4:4(“Remember the law of Moses…“)4:4LowReviewed — no new doctrinal flag. Uses established baseline terms 律法 and 摩西 exactly as recorded; functions as a closing summons back to covenant fidelity rather than introducing new doctrinal content.Automated review
4:5–6The Return of Elijah and the Restoration of Family4:5–6Medium以利亚先知 requires cross-reference to “my messenger” (3:1) to unify the book’s messenger-motif. 使父亲的心转向儿女 (“turning of hearts”) resonates positively with Confucian filial harmony (孝) — lower collision risk than most doctrines in this book — but still requires a note that this is God-initiated relational restoration flowing from repentance, not a filial debt discharged (孝顺), consistent with the baseline’s obedience-of-faith caution. 大而可畏之日 (great and awesome day) is the book’s technical eschatological climax term; never assimilate to dynastic-cycle historiography or a fortune-calendar doomsday concept.Native speaker review

Critical Risk Doctrines

God’s Unchanging Love for His People

Mandarin name: 神对祂子民不变的爱
Key terms: love, hated, unchanging, treasured_possession
Review routing: Human theologian

The book’s opening thesis ‘I have loved you’ (爱) and closing assurance ‘I do not change’ (我总不改变) together ground the whole curriculum. The central risk is collapse into the Chinese folk-Buddhist merit-accounting worldview (功德/阴德), where a deity’s favor is earned and can fluctuate with a person’s accumulated merit — precisely reversing Malachi’s point that God’s covenant love toward an undeserving, unfaithful people remains constant because of who God is, not because of Israel’s merit. This is the same class of Critical collision the baseline documents for grace (恩典) vs. 功德.

God’s Unchanging Character

Mandarin name: 神永不改变的本性
Key terms: unchanging, yhwh
Review routing: Human theologian

The declaration 我总不改变 must be taught as the personal, relational constancy of the covenant-keeping YHWH (耶和华), grounding Israel’s continued preservation despite unfaithfulness — never assimilated to the impersonal, cyclical constancy of 天道 (the impersonal cosmic order/Way) or to a fatalistic reading in which ‘unchanging’ means merely mechanical natural law rather than steadfast covenant faithfulness by a personal God.

The Vision of Universal Worship Among the Nations

Mandarin name: 万国敬拜真神的应许
Key terms: burn_incense, great_king, yhwh_of_hosts
Review routing: Human theologian

Malachi 1:11’s vision of incense (焚香) offered to God’s name ‘in every place’ among the nations is the single highest-sensitivity image in the book: 焚香 is the most visually and ritually loaded act in Chinese folk religion, Buddhism, and Daoism (incense before ancestor tablets, temple deities, and Buddha images). Without a mandatory clarifying note, readers will assume Scripture affirms generic incense-ritual across religious traditions rather than exclusive, prescribed worship of YHWH alone.

The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord

Mandarin name: 将要来的使者与耶和华的日子
Key terms: messenger, messenger_of_the_covenant, day_of_the_lord, great_and_dreadful_day_of_the_lord, lord, prepare_the_way
Review routing: Human theologian

Two distinct figures compressed into Malachi 3:1 — the human forerunner (使者, traditionally John the Baptist) and the divine messenger of the covenant (立约的使者, traditionally Christ) — must never be collapsed into one figure or into an angelic being (天使). The appointed ‘day’ of divine visitation must not be assimilated to the folk-calendar practice of selecting auspicious/inauspicious days by almanac divination (择日).

God’s Remembrance of the Faithful Remnant

Mandarin name: 神对忠心余民的记念
Key terms: book_of_remembrance, those_who_fear_the_lord, treasured_possession
Review routing: Human theologian

The ‘book of remembrance’ (纪念册) sits directly beside the Chinese folk-morality merit-and-demerit ledger tradition (功过簿/功过格), in which a person’s fate is calculated from an accumulated record of good and bad deeds. This is structurally the same Critical-risk collision the baseline documents for grace vs. 功德; the book of remembrance must be taught as God’s personal, relational, grace-grounded remembrance of his people, never a merit-tally determining reward.

The Sun of Righteousness and Healing

Mandarin name: 公义的日头与医治
Key terms: sun_of_righteousness, healing, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian

Double collision risk: the compound reuses the Critical-risk 义 root (God’s own vindicating righteousness, not a Confucian-virtue achievement), and the solar imagery risks assimilation to Chinese folk/astral deity veneration (e.g. 太阳星君, the folk ‘Lord of the Sun Star’) without a clarifying note that this is a metaphor for God’s righteous vindication, not an astral power in its own right.

Divine Justice: The Distinction Between the Righteous and the Wicked

Mandarin name: 神公正的审判:义人与恶人的分别
Key terms: righteous_and_wicked, day_of_the_lord, great_and_dreadful_day_of_the_lord
Review routing: Human theologian

The righteous/wicked distinction (义人/恶人) reuses the baseline’s Critical-risk 义 root and requires the identical distinguishing note against a Confucian-virtue reading. The distinction being made plain ‘on that day’ must also avoid assimilation to the cyclical rise-and-fall pattern of Chinese dynastic historiography (治乱循环), presenting instead a unique, decisive, once-for-all divine reckoning.

High Risk Doctrines

Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant

Mandarin name: 败坏的敬拜与破裂的约
Key terms: blemished_offering, despise, table_of_the_lord, profane, covenant
Review routing: Human theologian

The priests’ offering of defective animals and their profaning (亵渎) of the covenant of Levi must be taught as contempt toward a personal covenant God, not mere ritual sloppiness or procedural error, and not analogous to insufficiently prepared offerings at a folk temple or ancestor-veneration table (供桌), which operate on a reciprocal appeasement logic foreign to Malachi’s covenant-relational framework.

The Covenant of Levi and Corrupted Priestly Instruction

Mandarin name: 利未的约与败坏的祭司训诲
Key terms: covenant, instruction, priest, sons_of_levi, curse
Review routing: Human theologian

The priest’s God-given teaching function (训诲) must be distinguished from the Confucian system of ritual propriety and social-status instruction (礼教); Malachi condemns partiality in applying God’s true instruction, not a failure of etiquette-transmission. The judicial curse (咒诅) pronounced on the priesthood must likewise be kept distinct from folk magical curse-casting (下咒/施咒).

Faithfulness in Tithing and Marriage

Mandarin name: 十分之一的奉献与婚姻上的忠信
Key terms: rob_defraud, tithe, test, act_treacherously, divorce, wife_of_youth
Review routing: Human theologian

Two distinct but linked covenant-faithfulness tests. Tithing: God’s charge that Israel ‘robs’ him (夺取) must be taught as covenant unfaithfulness to a personal God, not failure to meet an institutional quota or feed a cosmic merit-ledger. Marriage: the condemnation of divorce risks direct collision with 休妻/七出, the historic Chinese legal tradition of a husband’s unilateral divorce right — CUV’s traditional rendering must carry a mandatory note that Malachi condemns, not regulates or endorses, covenant-breaking divorce.

The Marriage Covenant and the Sin of Divorce

Mandarin name: 婚姻之约与离弃之罪
Key terms: divorce, witness, act_treacherously, godly_offspring
Review routing: Human theologian

God’s own witness (见证) role in marriage elevates it to covenantal, not contractual, status — reinforcing the baseline’s rejection of 合同/契约 for covenant generally. The dominant cultural risk is specifically the 休妻/七出 tradition of unilateral, husband-initiated divorce embedded in classical Chinese family law; the passage’s ‘God hates divorce’ must not be read through that older patriarchal lens as regulating acceptable grounds for divorce, but as condemning covenant treachery itself.

Refining Judgment of God’s People

Mandarin name: 神对祂子民炼净的审判
Key terms: refiners_fire, refine, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian

The refiner’s fire (炼净的火) and launderer’s soap images describe corrective, restorative judgment on God’s own covenant priesthood, not punitive annihilation. This must be kept distinct from the popular Buddhist/folk image of retributive hell-fire (地狱之火) and from self-cultivated ritual purity (清净); the purification is God-initiated toward people already in covenant with him.

The Call to Repentance before the Great Day

Mandarin name: 在大日来临前的悔改呼召
Key terms: return, curse, sorcerer
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Return to me, and I will return to you’ (转向) emphasizes relational turning-back rather than primarily inward remorse (as 悔改 might suggest); a cross-reference note connecting shuv to the NT repentance doctrine already in the curriculum baseline is required. The listing of sorcery (行邪术的) among judged sins is a live pastoral-cultural issue given the continuing prevalence of fortune-telling, mediumship, and divination in Chinese folk practice, not merely an ancient-world reference.

Warning Against Occult Practice and Moral Corruption

Mandarin name: 对邪术与败德行为的警告
Key terms: sorcerer, adulterer, curse
Review routing: Human theologian

God’s direct judgment against sorcerers (行邪术的) is a doctrinally significant and culturally live warning, since consulting fortune-tellers, mediums, and geomancers remains a common practice in Chinese folk religion. Teaching must clearly present divination/occult practice as a covenant offense against the one true God, echoing but sharpening the baseline’s existing distinction between biblical prophecy and divination (算卦/占卜).

Medium Risk Doctrines

The Return of Elijah and the Restoration of Family

Mandarin name: 以利亚的再来与家庭的复兴
Key terms: elijah_the_prophet, turning_of_hearts, messenger
Review routing: Native speaker review

The promised turning of fathers’ hearts to children (使父亲的心转向儿女) resonates positively with the Confucian value of filial harmony (孝), which lowers collision risk compared to most other doctrines in this book, but still requires a note that this is God-initiated relational restoration flowing from repentance, not a social duty discharged as an obligation owed (孝顺) — consistent with the baseline’s caution on obedience-of-faith versus filial debt.
