Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — Titus (English → Mandarin)

Methodology

This analysis proceeds in Koine Greek, verse by verse for the core passage (Titus 2:11–3:8), then chapter-by-chapter across the entire book of Titus (1:1–16, 2:1–15, 3:1–15). Every term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly — no new rendering is proposed for , 耶稣, 基督, , 恩典, 信心, , 称义, 救恩, 圣灵, 使徒, 平安, 拣选, , 律法, , 荣耀, 劝勉, 儿子的名分, 圣洁, 圣徒. New terms required by Titus’s specific doctrinal content (elders/overseers, sound doctrine, regeneration, submission, divisive controversies, etc.) are proposed here for the first time and must be added to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 / Phase 2 tooling.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and routing conventions.

PART 1: CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE — Titus 2:11–3:8

Titus 2:11

Greek: Ἐπεφάνη γὰρ ἡ χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
ἐπεφάνηepephanē”appeared / was made visible”Epiphany-verb: a previously hidden reality bursting into visible manifestation, historically anchored (not recurring)appeared, has appeared, was manifested, dawnedGrace’s decisive historical in-breaking in Christ’s first coming; the same verb root recurs in 2:13 (Christ’s future glorious appearing) and 3:4 (God’s kindness appearing), forming a three-point epiphany structure across the core passage显现/显明 (xiǎnxiàn/xiǎnmíng). Risk: High. Chinese folk temple religion uses 显灵 (xiǎnlíng, “a deity manifests its efficacious power,” e.g., a city god or Mazu answering a prayer) for exactly this kind of divine-appearance vocabulary. 显灵 must NEVER be used — it frames God’s grace as one more efficacious deity-manifestation among competing temple gods. Use 显现/显明 only, and note the once-for-all historical referent, not a recurring efficacious sign.
χάρις τοῦ θεοῦcharis tou theou”grace of God”Unmerited favor, divine giftgrace of GodReuse baseline term exactly恩典 (ēndiǎn). Risk: Critical (per baseline). Subject of the sentence — grace itself is personified as the agent that “appeared” and “trains” (v.12); must not be reduced to a static attribute.
σωτήριοςsōtērios”saving, bringing salvation” (adjective)Adjectival form of σωτηρία, describing grace’s saving function/purposebringing salvation, savingGrace is qualified as salvation-bringing grace — links directly to 救恩 (salvation, baseline term)带来救恩的 (dài lái jiùēn de) modifying 恩典. Risk: Critical. Must retain explicit link to 救恩 so grace is not read as generic kindness; must not drift toward 解脱/超度 categories forbidden in baseline.
πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποιςpasin anthrōpois”to all men”Universal scope, no ethnic/social restrictionto all men, for everyoneReinforces baseline’s “Universal Scope of the Gospel” doctrine (High risk)向所有的人 (xiàng suǒyǒu de rén). Risk: High. Retain unqualified universality; do not soften toward a civilizational or graded-worthiness reading (cf. baseline Hua-Yi warning).

Titus 2:12

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
παιδεύουσαpaideuousa”training/disciplining (as a child)“From παιδεύω, the verb for raising/forming a child through discipline and instruction; NOT the same word as διδασκαλία (“doctrine/teaching”) used elsewhere in Titustraining, instructing, teaching, discipliningTHE central verb of the “Grace That Trains for Godly Living” doctrine: grace itself is the personified trainer/disciple-former, not merely an announced fact训练/塑造 (xùnliàn/sùzào), NOT 教训 (jiàoxùn). Risk: High. CUV renders this as 教训, the same word CUV uses for “sound doctrine/teaching” (διδασκαλία) elsewhere in Titus (1:9) — this collapses two distinct Greek words into one Chinese word and obscures that grace forms character over time rather than merely conveying propositional content. This package requires a distinct rendering (训练/塑造/操练) to preserve the formative, disciplinary nuance central to this curriculum’s first doctrine.
ἀρνησάμενοιarnēsamenoi”having renounced/denied”Deliberate rejection, disowningdenying, renouncing, having rejectedGrace produces an active renunciation, not passive avoidance弃绝 (qìjué). Risk: Low.
ἀσέβειανasebeian”ungodliness, impiety”Active irreverence toward God, opposite of εὐσέβειαungodliness, impietyDirect antonym of godliness (εὐσέβεια), central to this doctrine不敬虔 (bù jìngqián). Risk: Medium. Must be read against a personal God, not merely “disrespect of ritual propriety” (礼) in the Confucian sense.
κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίαςkosmikas epithymias”worldly desires/lusts”Desires oriented to the present age’s value systemworldly passions, worldly lustsNot all desire, but desire structured by “this present age” opposed to God’s kingdom世俗的私欲 (shìsú de sīyù). Risk: Low-Medium.
σωφρόνωςsōphronōs”soberly, sensibly, with self-mastery”Adverbial form of σώφρων — a life governed by sound judgment over impulsesoberly, sensibly, with self-controlFirst of a triad (σωφρόνως, δικαίως, εὐσεβῶς) describing the trained life自守地/清醒地 (zìshǒu de). Risk: Low.
δικαίωςdikaiōs”righteously”Conduct in right relation to others and to God’s standardrighteously, justlyAdverbial cognate of δικαιοσύνη (义, Critical baseline term) — must not be read as mere Confucian social propriety公义地 (gōngyì de), root 义. Risk: High (inherits the Critical risk profile of 义 from baseline; every occurrence in an ethical-living context still requires the distinguishing note that this is fruit of grace, not self-cultivated virtue).
εὐσεβῶςeusebōs”godly, piously”Right disposition and conduct toward God specificallygodly, in a godly mannerThird of the triad; the positive counterpart to ἀσέβεια敬虔地 (jìngqián de). Risk: Medium. See εὐσέβεια entry below (Ch.1).
ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνιen tō nyn aiōni”in the present age”Temporal marker distinguishing this age from the age to comein this present age, in the present worldSets up the “already/not yet” tension resolved in v.13’s future hope在这现今的世代 (zài zhè xiànjīn de shìdài). Risk: Low.

Titus 2:13

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
προσδεχόμενοιprosdechomenoi”awaiting, looking forward to”Eager, confident expectationawaiting, looking for, expectingPresent participle — an ongoing posture of hope, not passive resignation等候/期待 (děnghòu). Risk: Low.
μακαρίαν ἐλπίδαmakarian elpida”blessed hope”Hope with the quality of divine blessedness, not wishful optimismblessed hopeDistinct from generic hoping-for-luck (福气)有福的盼望 (yǒu fú de pànwàng). Risk: Medium. 福 root risks folk fortune-seeking overtones (cf. baseline gospel note); teach explicitly as hope anchored in Christ’s return, not an omen of coming luck.
ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξηςepiphaneian tēs doxēs”appearing of the glory”Same root as ἐπεφάνη (v.11), now future-oriented: the visible in-breaking of Christ’s glory at his returnglorious appearing, glorious manifestationThe second of the passage’s three epiphany-moments; here specifically Christ’s Second Coming荣耀的显现 (róngyào de xiǎnxiàn). Risk: High. Same 显灵 collision risk as v.11 applies; additionally reuse 荣耀 exactly per baseline.
τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦtou megalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou”of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ”Single Greek article (τοῦ) governing both “great God” and “Savior” — grammatically identifies one referent, not twothe great God and our Savior, Jesus ChristCRITICAL Deity-of-Christ text. Jesus Christ is directly named “the great God” — one of the NT’s clearest single-subject identifications of Christ as God, reinforcing baseline’s “Deity of Christ” doctrine我们至大的神和救主耶稣基督 (wǒmen zhìdà de Shén hé jiùzhǔ Yēsū Jīdū). Risk: Critical. The Mandarin word order must preserve the single-referent grammatical structure (one 的 possessive phrase governing both 神 and 救主) so that readers cannot parse this as two separate persons (“the great God, AND [also] our Savior Jesus Christ” read as two beings). Requires translator note per baseline escalation rules for Deity of Christ.
σωτῆροςsōtēros”Savior”One who delivers/rescuesSaviorNew Titus-curriculum term (σωτηρ appears 6x in Titus’s 3 chapters — deliberately dense)救主 (jiùzhǔ). Risk: Critical (NEW TERM). Must be added to translation memory. Distinguish from generic folk “savior/deliverer” figures (e.g. bodhisattva-as-rescuer imagery, or Maitreya as a coming world-savior — already flagged Critical under baseline’s “messiah” entry). 救主 always refers to God/Christ as the one who has already accomplished salvation, not a figure yet to come or one of several available deliverer-deities.

Titus 2:14

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶνedōken heauton hyper hēmōn”gave himself for us”Substitutionary self-givinggave himself for usAtonement language (flagged Critical for theologian review per baseline escalation rules)为我们舍己 (wèi wǒmen shě jǐ). Risk: Critical.
λυτρώσηταιlytrōsētai”might redeem/ransom”Buying back/releasing from bondage or penalty at a costredeem, ransomRedemption “from every lawless deed” — deliverance from sin’s grip, not a commercial or karmic-debt transaction救赎 (jiùshú, NEW TERM, distinct from 救恩). Risk: High. Must not be framed as repayment of an impersonal moral debt-ledger (cf. baseline’s 功德/阴德 warnings under Grace); the price is Christ’s self-gift, not the believer’s accumulated merit or a karmic settling of accounts.
πάσης ἀνομίαςpasēs anomias”all lawlessness”Comprehensive moral rebellion against God’s lawall iniquity, every lawless deedReuse 罪 concept; connects to 律法 (law, baseline)一切的罪恶/不法 (yīqiè de zuì’è). Risk: Medium.
καθαρίσῃkatharisē”might purify/cleanse”Removal of moral defilementpurify, cleanseConnects to purity theme also present in Ch.1 (καθαρός/μεμιαμμένος)洁净 (jiéjìng, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual/meditative purity, already forbidden under baseline’s “holy” entry).
λαὸν περιούσιονlaon periousion”a people for his own possession”OT covenant echo (Exodus 19:5, “treasured possession”) — a people specially belonging to Godspecial people, peculiar people, his own possessionCovenant-identity language, corporate not individualistic特意归自己的子民 (tèyì guī zìjǐ de zǐmín, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Avoid rendering that suggests an ethnic-national “chosen people” (选民 alone could read nationalistically); anchor clearly in the church as God’s covenant people gathered from “all men” per v.11.
ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργωνzēlōtēn kalōn ergōn”zealous of good works”Eager, enthusiastic devotion to good deeds, as the redeemed community’s characteristic dispositionzealous for good works, eager to do goodThe purpose-clause outcome of redemption: good works are the fruit, never the ground, of salvation — the hinge of this curriculum’s central tension热心行善 (rèxīn xíngshàn), root 善行 (shànxíng, NEW TERM). Risk: Critical. 善行 and its cognate 行善/积善 sit inside the Chinese Buddhist merit-accumulation worldview (功德, already Critical-flagged in baseline) where good deeds bank karmic credit toward better rebirth or fortune. Every occurrence of 善行 in Titus must be anchored explicitly to prior grace/redemption (as this verse structurally does: redemption FIRST, zeal for good works SECOND) so readers do not reverse the causal order into merit-earning.

Titus 2:15

Greek: Ταῦτα λάλει καὶ παρακάλει καὶ ἔλεγχε μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς· μηδείς σου περιφρονείτω

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
λάλειlalei”speak”Plain, direct verbal communicationspeak, tellTitus’s teaching mandate (jiǎng). Risk: Low.
παρακάλειparakalei”exhort, urge, encourage”Baseline term for mutual/pastoral exhortationexhort, urgeReuse baseline exactly劝勉 (quànmiǎn). Risk: Low (per baseline).
ἔλεγχεelenche”rebuke, reprove, expose (with a view to correction)“Confrontational but corrective speech, exposing errorrebuke, reprove, convictDistinct from mere criticism; aims at repentance/correction, recurs in Ch.1 (elders must be able to do this)责备/指正 (zébèi/zhǐzhèng, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Care needed given Chinese cultural sensitivity around public correction and 面子 (“face”); the doctrine must be preserved (direct correction is a biblical mandate) even where cultural instinct favors indirection.
ἐπιταγῆςepitagēs”authority, command, injunction”Delegated authoritative mandate for the task of teaching/rebukingauthority, commandDistinct from ἀρχαῖς/ἐξουσίαις (civil rulers, Ch.3) — this is Titus’s ministerial authority, not political power权柄 (quánbǐng, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Distinguish clearly from civil ἐξουσία in 3:1 to avoid conflating pastoral and political authority.
περιφρονείτωperiphroneitō”let [him] despise/disregard”Contemptuous dismissallet no one despise you, let no one disregardProtects the legitimacy of Titus’s Spirit-authorized teaching office轻看 (qīngkàn). Risk: Low.

Titus 3:1

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
ἀρχαῖς καὶ ἐξουσίαιςarchais kai exousiais”rulers and authorities”Civil governmental power structuresrulers and authorities, governing powersParallels Romans 13:1’s civil-authority theme; central to this curriculum’s “Submission to Authority” doctrine执政的、掌权的 (zhízhèng de, zhǎngquán de, NEW TERM, CUV-pattern). Risk: High. Given the baseline’s own flag on government/authority passages as culturally sensitive (native speaker review) and this curriculum’s explicit doctrinal focus on submission-to-authority, elevate to theologian-level review: contemporary political sensitivities around state authority in a Mandarin-speaking context require careful framing that neither absolutizes state power nor implies political defiance is being taught.
ὑποτάσσεσθαιhypotassesthai”to be subject to, to submit”Voluntary ordering of oneself under another’s authority; middle/passive voice — a chosen posture, not coerced servilitybe subject to, submit toThe verb underlying this entire curriculum’s “Submission to Authority” doctrine, recurring for wives (2:5), slaves (2:9), and citizens (3:1)顺服 (shùnfú, NEW TERM). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from Confucian hierarchical duty-obedience embedded in the Three Cardinal Guides (三纲: ruler-subject, father-son, husband-wife) where the subordinate party’s compliance is an inherent, near-absolute social debt owed by virtue of fixed status. Biblical ὑποτάσσω here is a freely chosen, gospel-motivated posture flowing from redeemed identity (cf. 3:3-8), not an unconditional status-based duty, and it is always implicitly bounded (submission never requires disobeying God, cf. Acts 5:29 background). Every occurrence requires this distinguishing note.
πειθαρχεῖνpeitharchein”to obey (rulers)“Compliance specifically with governing authorityobey, be obedient to authorityReinforces ὑποτάσσεσθαι with a stronger volitional-compliance term服从/遵从 (fúcóng, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium.
ἔργον ἀγαθὸνergon agathon”good work/deed”Singular form of the good-works themegood work, good deedSame theme as καλὰ ἔργα; readiness for good works is the outward marker of redeemed character善行/善事 reuse from v.14 vocabulary. Risk: Critical (same merit-collision concern as above).

Titus 3:2

Greek: μηδένα βλασφημεῖν, ἀμάχους εἶναι, ἐπιεικεῖς, πᾶσαν ἐνδεικνυμένους πραότητα πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
βλασφημεῖνblasphēmein”to slander, malign, speak evil of”Verbal defamation; same root used for blasphemy against God but here directed at fellow humansspeak evil of, slander, malignRecurs in 2:5 (word of God not “blasphemed/maligned”) — same Greek root applied to God’s reputation and to human reputation毁谤/说…的坏话 (huǐbàng). Risk: Low-Medium. Distinguish contextually from theological “blasphemy against God” (亵渎) used elsewhere in Scripture; here it is interpersonal slander.
ἀμάχουςamachous”not quarrelsome, peaceable”Absence of contentiousnesspeaceable, not quarrelsomeConnects to “Avoiding Divisive Controversies” doctrine不好争闹的 (bù hào zhēngnào de, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
ἐπιεικεῖςepieikeis”gentle, considerate, reasonable”Yielding disposition that does not insist on the letter of one’s rightsgentle, considerate, forbearing谦和/宽容 (qiānhé, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
πραότηταpraotēta”gentleness, meekness”Strength held in restraint, not weaknessgentleness, meekness温柔 (wēnróu, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.

Titus 3:3

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
ἀνόητοιanoētoi”foolish, senseless”Lacking spiritual understandingfoolish, senselessSets up the “before/after” contrast structure of 3:3-8, the passage’s rhetorical hinge无知的 (wúzhī de). Risk: Low.
ἀπειθεῖςapeitheis”disobedient”Willful non-compliance, especially toward GoddisobedientSame root as πειθαρχεῖν (3:1) negated — an ironic echo: we who now urge obedience to authority were ourselves once disobedient悖逆的 (bèinì de). Risk: Low-Medium.
πλανώμενοιplanōmenoi”being led astray, deceived”Passive — being misled by errordeceived, led astray被迷惑/走迷了路的 (bèi míhuò de). Risk: Low.
δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς ποικίλαιςdouleuontes epithymiais kai hēdonais poikilais”serving/enslaved to various lusts and pleasures”Same δουλ- root as “slave” (2:9) and “servant of God” (1:1) — deliberate irony: former slavery to passion vs. present service to Godslaves to various passions and pleasuresContrast between two kinds of “service” (δουλεύω) frames the whole letter’s submission theme被各样的私欲和宴乐所奴役 (NEW TERM, root 私欲 reuse from 2:12). Risk: Medium.
ἐν κακίᾳ καὶ φθόνῳen kakia kai phthonō”in malice and envy”在恶毒和嫉妒中 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
στυγητοί, μισοῦντες ἀλλήλουςstygētoi, misountes allēlous”hateful, hating one another”Mutual hostility as the natural fruit of the unredeemed statehateful and hating one another可恨的,彼此相恨 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.

Titus 3:4

Greek: ὅτε δὲ ἡ χρηστότης καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία ἐπεφάνη τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
χρηστότηςchrēstotēs”kindness, goodness”God’s benevolent disposition in actionkindness, goodnessThird epiphany-moment of the core passage (with vv.11, 13) — God’s disposition, not merely his acts恩慈 (ēncí, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from 恩典 (grace, the gift) — this word names God’s kind disposition that motivates the gift. Also guard against collapsing into the Buddhist compassion-term 慈悲 (cíbēi, associated with Guanyin’s mercy toward suffering beings), which carries a different soteriological framework (compassion released from within enlightened beings, not the free decision of a personal covenant God).
φιλανθρωπίαphilanthrōpia”love for mankind”Benevolent love directed at humanity as suchlove toward man, love for mankind慈爱/爱世人的心 (NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Same 慈 root risk as above — flag for consistent doctrinal framing distinguishing covenantal divine love from generalized folk-religious compassion.
ἐπεφάνηepephanē(as v.11)Third occurrence of the epiphany-root in the core passageappeared显现/显明 — reuse rendering and risk note from v.11. Risk: High.
τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦtou sōtēros hēmōn theou”of God our Savior”Here “Savior” is applied to “God” (the Father), while in 2:13/3:6 it is applied to Christ — Trinitarian symmetry: both Father and Son are called SaviorGod our SaviorReinforces 救主 as a term applicable to more than one Person of the Godhead without division of essence我们救主神 reuse 救主+神. Risk: Critical. Teaching note required: Father and Son are both called 救主 in this short passage (3:4 vs. 2:13/3:6) — this must be taught as Trinitarian unity of saving purpose, not two competing savior-figures.

Titus 3:5

οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖςouk ex ergōn tōn en dikaiosynē ha epoiēsamen hēmeis”not by works of righteousness which we ourselves did”Explicit exclusion of self-produced righteous deeds as the ground of salvationnot by works of righteousness we have doneTHE central proof-text of the curriculum’s “Salvation by Grace not Works” doctrine. Directly parallel to Romans 3:20, 28; 4:4-5, 11:5-6 (baseline Critical passages)不是因我们自己所行的义 (bú shì yīn wǒmen zìjǐ suǒ xíng de yì). Risk: Critical. Must retain 义 (baseline Critical term) here explicitly negated as a ground of salvation — this is precisely the verse most vulnerable to the Confucian-virtue misreading the baseline warns against for 义, and the Buddhist merit misreading warned against for 善行/功德-type good deeds. This verse and Romans 3-4 must be taught together as the same doctrine expressed twice.
ἔλεοςeleos”mercy”Compassion shown toward the undeserving in their misery/need, distinct from χάρις (grace, favor toward the unworthy generally)mercy怜悯 (liánmǐn, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Distinguish nuance from 恩典 (grace): mercy is God’s compassion toward our miserable condition, grace is God’s favor despite our unworthiness — related but distinct emphases, both excluding merit.
ἔσωσενesōsen”saved” (aorist — a completed past act)Root of σωτηρία/σωτήρsavedReuse 救恩 verb-root exactly: 拯救 (zhěngjiù) as the verb, consistent with 救恩 (noun) already in translation memoryRisk: Critical (per baseline salvation entry).
λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίαςloutrou palingenesias”washing of regeneration”λουτρόν = a washing/bath (associated with baptism); παλιγγενεσία = “again-birth,” a decisive, once-for-all new-creation eventwashing of regeneration, washing of rebirthCRITICAL new-birth doctrine text, the curriculum’s core term for “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit”重生的洗 (chóngshēng de xǐ, following established CUV rendering). Risk: Critical (NEW TERM — must inherit baseline’s forbidden-substitution logic for resurrection). 重生 (“born again/regenerated”) must NEVER be confused with, or explained by analogy to, 轮回 (the cycle of reincarnation) or 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb) — both already forbidden under baseline’s “resurrection” entry for the same reason: Christian regeneration is a single, once-for-all inward re-creation by the Holy Spirit in this life, the opposite of an ongoing cycle of rebirths across lifetimes. This distinction must be made explicit every time 重生 appears in Titus.
ἀνακαινώσεωςanakainōseōs”renewal, renewing”Ongoing making-new of the inner person, complementing the once-for-all “washing”renewing, renewal更新 (gēngxīn, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Distinguish the ongoing renewing work (parallel to 成圣/sanctification, baseline Critical term) from the once-for-all regenerating washing — teach both together as the Spirit’s single work with two aspects.
Πνεύματος ἉγίουPneumatos Hagiou”of the Holy Spirit”Reuse baseline exactlyHoly Spirit圣灵. Risk: Critical (per baseline).

Titus 3:6

Greek: οὗ ἐξέχεεν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς πλουσίως διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk

πλουσίωςplousiōs”richly, abundantly”丰富地 (fēngfù de). Risk: Low.
διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶνdia Iēsou Christou tou sōtēros hēmōn”through Jesus Christ our Savior”Second application of σωτήρ to Christ specifically in this passage (with 2:13)through Jesus Christ our SaviorReuse 救主 exactly. Risk: Critical.

Titus 3:7

Greek: ἵνα δικαιωθέντες τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι κληρονόμοι γενηθῶμεν κατ’ ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίου

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
δικαιωθέντεςdikaiōthentes”having been justified”Aorist passive of δικαιόω — a completed, God-performed forensic declarationhaving been justifiedReuse baseline term exactly称义 (chēngyì). Risk: Critical (per baseline). This is the letter’s single explicit occurrence of the justification word-group, directly parallel to Romans 3-5’s argument; must be taught in continuity with the Romans curriculum’s justification doctrine.
τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτιtē ekeinou chariti”by his grace”Instrumental grace as the basis of the justifying declarationby his grace凭着他的恩典. Reuse 恩典. Risk: Critical (per baseline).
κληρονόμοιklēronomoi”heirs”Legal status of inheritance-holdersheirsConnects directly to baseline’s “Adoption into God’s Family” doctrine (儿子的名分), which already discusses inheritance rights后嗣/承受产业的人 (hòusì, NEW TERM). Risk: High. Must be taught alongside baseline’s adoption doctrine note: this is full relational inheritance-sonship, not the instrumental clan-continuation arrangement of traditional 过继 adoption (already flagged High in baseline), nor a purely material property-inheritance concept as 产业 (property/estate) might suggest on its own in modern secular usage.
κατ’ ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίουkat’ elpida zōēs aiōniou”according to the hope of eternal life”Reuse 永生hope of eternal life照着永生的盼望. Risk: Medium. Distinguish 永生 from Daoist longevity/immortality-cultivation aspiration (长生不老) and from Buddhist notions of an eternally recurring cycle; eternal life here is unending covenant fellowship with God following a single resurrection, not indefinitely extended bodily existence attained by practice.

Titus 3:8

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
Πιστὸς ὁ λόγοςPistos ho logos”faithful is the word/saying”A formulaic Pauline marker (also in 1 Tim 1:15, 3:1, 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11) introducing a trustworthy doctrinal summary — here summarizing 3:4-7this is a trustworthy/faithful sayingMarks 3:4-7 as a settled, authoritative doctrinal formula, likely an early creedal/hymnic unit这话是可信的 (zhè huà shì kěxìn de). Risk: Medium. Root 信 (faith/believe) reused; note this formula’s structural role so translators do not treat it as incidental phrasing.

φροντίζωσιν…καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαιphrontizōsin…kalōn ergōn proistasthai”be careful to engage in/maintain good works”προΐστασθαι = “to stand before/devote oneself to, to be engaged in”be careful to maintain good works, be careful to devote themselves to good worksA translation-tradition variant flag: CUV’s primary text renders this “作正经事业” (engage in a proper occupation/legitimate trade), with a footnote alternate “行善” (do good works). This package requires the good-works sense for doctrinal clarity within this curriculum (“Sound Doctrine and Good Works”), consistent with the CUV’s own footnoted alternate and modern scholarly consensus.竭力行善/专心行善 (jiélì xíngshàn). Risk: Critical. Same merit-collision profile as 善行 above (2:14, 3:1); additionally flagged because it deviates from CUV’s primary-text wording, requiring a translator note explaining the deliberate departure from 正经事业 toward 行善 for doctrinal precision.
οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷhoi pepisteukotes theō”those who have believed God”Reuse 信 rootthose who have believed in God信了神的人. Risk: Medium (consistency with 信心/faith baseline term).
καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμαkala kai ōphelima”good and profitable/beneficial”Practical benefit to others, not abstract merit-accrual for oneselfgood and profitableConcluding summary: good works benefit other people, reinforcing that they are relational fruit, not a private merit transaction美好并且对人有益的 (NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. The phrase “beneficial to men” (τοῖς ἀνθρώποις) should be emphasized in teaching to reinforce that good works are outward-facing service, not an inward merit-bank contribution.

PART 2: CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE ENTIRE BOOK

Chapter 1 (Titus 1:1–16)

Covers the greeting/theological preamble (1:1-4), qualifications for elders/overseers (1:5-9), and the warning against false teachers in Crete (1:10-16). All terms here are new to this curriculum (none overlap with the core passage).

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
δοῦλος θεοῦdoulos theou”slave/servant of God”Paul’s self-designation; same δουλ- root later applied to household slaves (2:9) and to former slavery to sin/passion (3:3)servant of God, slave of GodEstablishes the letter’s recurring servant/master/submission vocabulary field from its opening word神的仆人 (Shén de púrén, NEW TERM, CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Note the deliberate wordplay across the letter: Paul is proudly 神的仆人; household δοῦλοι must 顺服 human 主人 (never 主); redeemed believers were once 奴仆 to passion. Keep 仆人/奴仆 distinct from 主 (reserved exclusively for Christ’s Lordship per baseline).
ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦeklektōn theou”God’s elect/chosen ones”Reuse 拣选 rootGod’s elect, God’s chosen peopleConnects directly to baseline’s “Election” doctrine (拣选, High risk)神所拣选的人. Risk: High (per baseline election entry — must not read as impersonal fate/缘分).
ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείαςepignōsis alētheias”knowledge of the truth”Full, personal, experiential knowing, not mere informationknowledge of the truthIn this verse, “the truth” = the gospel message corporately; CUV renders contextually as 真道 (“the true way/doctrine”) rather than the bare abstract 真理真道的知识 (zhēn dào de zhīshì, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Note the CUV’s contextual choice of 真道 over literal 真理 here; keep 真理 available for more abstract philosophical-truth contexts elsewhere, but this verse’s referent is the specific gospel content.
εὐσέβειαeusebeia”godliness”Reverent, God-oriented life; the root also used adverbially in 2:12godliness, pietyRecurs 1:1, 2:12; foundational to “faith and knowledge” pairing here敬虔 (jìngqián, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from generic secular “piety/devoutness” (虔诚, already flagged Medium under baseline’s “faith” entry) that could describe devotion to any deity; 敬虔 here is reverence specifically for the God revealed in Christ.
πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίωνpro chronōn aiōniōn”before times eternal”God’s promise predates creation itselfbefore the ages began, before time beganEstablishes the eternality and unconditional reliability of the promise fulfilled in Christ万古之先 (wàngǔ zhī xiān, CUV pattern). Risk: Low.
ἀψευδὴς θεόςapseudēs theos”the God who does not lie”God’s character guarantees the promise’s certaintyGod who cannot lie, God who never liesGrounds “hope of eternal life” (v.2) in God’s truthful character, not human wishful thinking不说谎的神 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
κήρυγμαkērygma”proclamation, preaching”The public, authorized declaration of the gospel messagepreaching, proclamation传扬 (chuányáng, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
ἐπιταγὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦepitagēn tou sōtēros hēmōn theou”commandment of God our Savior”Reuse 救主 and 权柄/命令 vocabularycommandment of God our SaviorFirst occurrence of σωτήρ applied to God the Father in the letter (paired later with Christ, 2:13; 3:6)Reuse 救主; command = 命令 (mìnglìng). Risk: Critical (per 救主 above).
κοινὴν πίστινkoinēn pistin”common/shared faith”Faith held in common across all believers, corporate not individual onlycommon faith, faith we shareReuse 信心. Risk: High (per baseline faith entry).
πρεσβύτεροςpresbyteros”elder”An office of church leadership qualified by character and doctrinal soundnesselderCENTRAL to this curriculum’s “Qualifications for Elders” doctrine长老 (zhǎnglǎo, NEW TERM). Risk: High. 长老 is also the established Chinese term for a senior Buddhist monk (an honored elder within a monastic Sangha) and is used as a formal office-title in Chinese Presbyterian churches (长老会). While the Presbyterian usage is a helpful precedent within Chinese Christian tradition, care is needed so readers from a Buddhist background do not import an ascetic-master or monastic-seniority framework — a biblical elder is a qualified household-and-doctrine leader within a local congregation, appointed for character and teaching ability, not years of religious cultivation or monastic rank.
ἐπίσκοποςepiskopos”overseer, bishop”Used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος in this passage (1:5, 7) — same office, two descriptive titlesoverseer, bishopConfirms elder = overseer in Pauline ecclesiology (no separate higher “bishop” office implied here)监督 (jiāndū, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. 监督 is also ordinary secular vocabulary for a workplace/exam supervisor or inspector; must be introduced with clear ecclesial framing so it is not read as a purely administrative/managerial function detached from the doctrinal-shepherding role the passage describes.
ἀνέγκλητοςanenklētos”blameless, above reproach”Not currently open to valid accusation (not sinless perfection)blameless, above reproachFoundational elder qualification无可指责 (wú kě zhǐzé). Risk: Low.
μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδραmias gynaikos andra”husband of one wife”Marital fidelity/singularity as a leadership qualificationhusband of one wife, faithful to his wife只作一个妻子的丈夫 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Historically relevant given China’s pre-modern legal toleration of concubinage; in the modern legal-monogamy context risk is lower but the underlying virtue (marital fidelity/singular devotion) must still be taught clearly.
οἰκονόμος θεοῦoikonomos theou”steward of God”Household-manager metaphor for the elder’s role: managing God’s household (the church) on his behalf, not owning itsteward of God, God’s household manager神的管家 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low-Medium.
Elder vice list: αὐθάδης, ὀργίλος, πάροινος, πλήκτης, αἰσχροκερδήςauthadēs, orgilos, paroinos, plēktēs, aischrokerdēsself-willed, quick-tempered, given to wine, violent, greedy for moneyDisqualifying character traitsself-willed / quick-tempered / addicted to wine / violent / greedy for moneyNegative qualification list, character-based not merit-based任性、暴怒、好酒、殴人、贪财 (NEW TERMS, grouped). Risk: Low.
Elder virtue list: φιλόξενος, φιλάγαθος, σώφρων, δίκαιος, ὅσιος, ἐγκρατήςphiloxenos, philagathos, sōphrōn, dikaios, hosios, egkratēshospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, holy/devout, self-controlledPositive qualification listhospitable / lover of good / sober-minded / just / holy / self-controlledδίκαιος reuses 义 (Critical baseline); ὅσιος is a distinct Greek word from ἅγιος (baseline’s “holy,” 圣洁) — both are conventionally rendered 圣洁 in Chinese, risking loss of the Greek distinction between “just/right” (δίκαιος), “devout/pious toward God” (ὅσιος), and “set apart” (ἅγιος)乐意接待远人、喜爱良善、自守、公义、圣洁、节制 (NEW TERMS, grouped). Risk: Medium (for ὅσιος specifically, flag the collapsed-distinction note above); δίκαιος inherits Critical risk from baseline 义.
ἀντεχόμενος τοῦ πιστοῦ λόγουantechomenos tou pistou logou”holding fast the faithful word”Firm doctrinal grip, resisting driftholding fast the faithful wordQualification tying elder office directly to doctrinal fidelity坚守真实的道理 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium.
διδασκαλία ὑγιαίνουσαdidaskalia hygiainousa”sound/healthy doctrine”ὑγιαίνω = to be healthy (medical metaphor) — doctrine that produces spiritual health, as opposed to diseased/corrupting teachingsound doctrine, healthy teachingCENTRAL to “Sound Doctrine and Good Works” doctrine, recurring 1:9, 2:1, 2:8, 2:10 in varied forms纯正的教义 (chúnzhèng de jiàoyì, NEW TERM — CANONICAL for this package). Risk: High. CUV itself varies the Chinese wording across occurrences of this recurring Greek concept (道理/教训/教导/纯全的言语), which risks readers not recognizing the same underlying doctrinal category recurring across the letter. This package standardizes on 纯正的教义 for the noun form (adjusted per grammatical context, e.g. 纯正的言语 for the “sound speech” variant in 2:8) and requires a cross-reference note tying all four occurrences together as one recurring theme.
ματαιολόγοι, φρεναπάταιmataiologoi, phrenapatai”idle/empty talkers,” “deceivers/mind-deceivers”Descriptors of the false teachersidle talkers, deceivers说虚空话的人、欺哄人的 (NEW TERMS). Risk: Low-Medium.
οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆςhoi ek peritomēs”those of the circumcision”Jewish-Christian legalist factionthose of the circumcision partyConnects to Romans’ “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” doctrine tension, here in its divisive/legalistic form奉割礼的人 (contextual, low risk as a historical descriptor). Risk: Low.
Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται, κακὰ θηρία, γαστέρες ἀργαίKrētes aei pseustai, kaka thēria, gasteres argai”Cretans always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons”A direct quotation of a pagan Cretan poet (traditionally attributed to Epimenides), cited by Paul as a recognized cultural observation”Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons”Special translator note required: Paul quotes a non-biblical pagan source approvingly for a limited rhetorical point (cf. Acts 17:28’s citation of Greek poets) — this is NOT Paul endorsing Cretan cultural inferiority as an ethnic essentialism, but citing a known local proverb to justify firm correction of specific behavior problems in the Cretan churches克里特人常说谎话,是恶兽,又馋又懒 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Flag for translator/teacher note explaining the quotation’s rhetorical function so it is not read as biblical endorsement of ethnic stereotyping.
Ἰουδαϊκοῖς μύθοιςIoudaikois mythois”Jewish fables/myths”Extra-biblical legalistic or speculative Jewish traditions, not Scripture itselfJewish myths, Jewish fablesConnects to “Avoiding Divisive Controversies” doctrine, paired with Ch.3’s genealogy warning犹太人荒谬的言语 (NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Must be clear this targets specific extra-biblical legalistic traditions, not the Old Testament Scriptures themselves nor Jewish people generally (avoid any anti-Judaic overtone).
ἐντολαῖς ἀνθρώπων ἀποστρεφομένων τὴν ἀλήθειανentolais anthrōpōn apostrephomenōn tēn alētheian”commandments of men who turn from the truth”Human-invented religious rules detached from and opposed to revealed truthcommandments of men who reject the truth人所吩咐、背弃真理之人的规条 (NEW TERM). Risk: Medium.
καθαρός / μεμιαμμένοςkatharos / memiammenos”pure” / “defiled”Moral-spiritual condition, not primarily ritualpure / defiled, corruptedSets up 1:15’s paradox: to the defiled, “nothing is pure” — a statement about the corrupting effect of an unbelieving mind, not a ritual-purity code洁净的 / 污秽的 (NEW TERMS). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from Daoist/Buddhist ritual purity (清净, already forbidden under baseline’s “holy” entry).
συνείδησιςsyneidēsis”conscience”The inner moral faculty that approves or condemnsconscience良心 (liángxīn, NEW TERM). Risk: Low-Medium. Standard modern Mandarin term; low collision risk, though note 良心 in folk usage can carry a more generic “moral sense” flavor without necessarily implying accountability before a personal God — clarify in doctrinal contexts.
ὁμολογοῦσιν…ἀρνοῦνταιhomologousin…arnountai”they profess…they deny”Profession contradicted by conduct — a hypocrisy warningthey claim to know God but deny him by their works口里说认识神,行为却背弃他 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
βδελυκτοίbdelyktoi”detestable, abominable”Strong moral revulsion termdetestable, abominable可憎恶的 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
ἀδόκιμοι (πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν)adokimoi”disqualified, failing the test, rejected” (for any good work)Testing-metaphor: failing to pass inspectionunfit, disqualified, worthless for any good workNegative counterpoint to 2:14/3:1’s “zealous for good works” — false teachers fail precisely at the fruit (good works) that true grace produces在各样善事上是可废弃的 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Reuse 善行/善事 vocabulary; the contrast between counterfeit profession (no good-works fruit) and genuine grace (zealous for good works, 2:14) is a key structural argument of the letter — flag for cross-reference teaching note.

Chapter 2 (Titus 2:1–15)

Titus 2:1–10 (household codes for older men, older women, young women, young men, and slaves) introduces new terms not covered in the core-passage verse-by-verse above. Titus 2:11–15 is the opening of the core passage and is fully covered in Part 1 above; it is not repeated here.

διδασκαλία ὑγιαίνουσα (2:1)didaskalia hygiainousa”sound doctrine”Reuse from Ch.1 entry abovesound doctrineTitus’s own teaching must match the standard just described for elders纯正的教义 — reuse. Risk: High.

Risk: Low. Note distinction from πρεσβύτερος (elder office) — same root, different referent; avoid implying every older man/woman holds church office.
νηφάλιος, σεμνός, σώφρων (of older men)nēphalios, semnos, sōphrōntemperate, dignified, self-controlledCharacter qualities paralleling elder qualifications, now applied congregation-widetemperate / dignified / self-controlled节制、端庄、自守 (CUV pattern). Risk: Low.
ὑπομονήhypomonē”patience, endurance”Steadfast perseverance under difficultypatience, endurance忍耐 (rěnnài, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
ἱεροπρεπεῖςhieroprepeis”reverent in behavior” (lit. “fitting for sacred things”)Conduct appropriate to one engaged in sacred servicereverent in their behaviorApplied to older women’s demeanor; the “sacred/priestly” root requires care行为端正,如敬拜神的人 (NEW TERM, expanded for clarity). Risk: Medium. Avoid a literal rendering suggesting older women hold a priestly office; the point is dignified conduct befitting one devoted to God, not an actual cultic role.
μὴ διαβόλουςmē diabolous”not slanderers” (lit. “not devils/slanderous ones”)Adjectival use of the same root as διάβολος (“the devil/Satan”) applied to human gossip/slandernot slanderers, not malicious gossipsImportant lexical-collision flag: the underlying Greek word is the same root used elsewhere in the NT for Satan (“the Devil”)不说谗言的 / 不搬弄是非的 (NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Must NOT be rendered with any form of 魔鬼 (Devil/Satan) — that would introduce a demonological claim absent from the text. This verse is about human slanderous speech, unrelated to the spiritual being.
σωφρονίζωσινsōphronizōsin”to train/admonish toward sound-mindedness”Cognate of σώφρων and shares a conceptual field with παιδεύω (2:12)‘s “training”admonish, train, encourage to be sensibleConnects to the letter’s broader “training” theme (cf. 2:12 παιδεύουσα)劝导 (quàndǎo, NEW TERM). Risk: Medium. Where possible, teach in connection with 2:12’s 训练/塑造 to reinforce the letter’s unified theme that godly character is formed, both through grace’s own training and through the mentoring relationships (older women training younger women) that grace establishes within the church.
φίλανδρος, φιλότεκνοςphilandros, philoteknos”loving husband(s),” “loving children”Marital and maternal love as trained virtues, not mere natural sentimentloving their husbands, loving their children爱丈夫、爱儿女 (NEW TERMS). Risk: Low.
ἁγνήhagnē”chaste, pure”Moral/sexual puritychaste, pure贞洁 (zhēnjié, NEW TERM). Risk: Low-Medium.
οἰκουρόςoikouros”keeper at home, homemaker”Domestic household-management roleworking at home, keepers at home, homemakers顾家的 (gùjiā de, CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Flag for cultural-application care (not a doctrinal mistranslation risk, but a pastoral-sensitivity note): teachers should present this within its full household-management sense (cf. οἰκονόμος, the steward-of-God term in Ch.1) rather than as a narrow modern homemaker-only role, and should avoid implying this is the only legitimate role for Christian women in a contemporary urban Chinese context where dual-income households are the norm.
ὑποτασσομένας τοῖς ἀνδράσιν ἰδίοιςhypotassomenas tois andrasin idiois”being subject to their own husbands”Same ὑποτάσσω root as 3:1’s civil submission and 2:9’s slave submissionsubmitting to their own husbandsOne of the letter’s three submission contexts (wives, slaves, citizens) — reuse the ὑποτάσσω analysis from 3:1 in full顺服自己的丈夫 — reuse 顺服. Risk: High (per 3:1 analysis above: distinguish from Confucian fixed hierarchical duty; this is grace-motivated, gospel-protecting conduct, cf. next entry).
ἵνα μὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ βλασφημῆταιhina mē ho logos tou theou blasphēmētai”that the word of God may not be blasphemed/maligned”The purpose clause governing the entire household code: conduct protects the gospel’s reputation before outsidersso that the word of God may not be reviled/malignedReveals the missional motive behind the household instructions — not preserving social hierarchy for its own sake, but gospel witness免得神的道被毁谤 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. This purpose clause should be taught prominently alongside every submission instruction in the letter (2:5, 2:9-10, 3:1-2) to keep the missional/gospel-witness motive primary over any social-hierarchy-preservation reading.
τύπον καλῶν ἔργωνtypon kalōn ergōn”pattern/example of good works”Reuse 善行 vocabularypattern of good works, example of good works善行的榜样. Risk: Critical (per 2:14 entry — merit-collision concern applies identically).
ἀφθορία, σεμνότης, λόγον ὑγιῆaphthoria, semnotēs, logon hygiēintegrity, reverence/dignity, sound speechCharacter qualities for young menintegrity, reverence, sound speech (that cannot be condemned)λόγον ὑγιῆ reuses the ὑγιαίνω root from “sound doctrine”正直、端庄、纯正的言语 (NEW TERMS). Risk: Medium (for 纯正的言语 specifically, tie to 纯正的教义 cross-reference per Ch.1 entry).
δοῦλος (2:9)doulos”bondservant, slave”The institutional slavery of the Greco-Roman household, addressed with instructions for conduct within the institution, not an endorsement of the institution itselfbondservants, slavesConnects to Ch.1’s δοῦλος θεοῦ and Ch.3’s “we ourselves were once slaves to passion” — a deliberate threefold wordplay across the letter仆人 (púrén, CUV pattern, reuse from Ch.1). Risk: High. Requires a clear teaching note distinguishing (a) the historical Greco-Roman institution of slavery being addressed pastorally without being endorsed as an ideal, from (b) any implication that the passage legitimizes slavery as such, and from (c) the traditional Chinese master-servant household relationship (主仆关系) which carried its own distinct social-status assumptions.
δεσπότης (2:9)despotēs”master, lord (of a household/of slaves)“A human master with legal authority over household slavesmaster(s)CRITICAL lexical-reservation issue.主人 (zhǔrén). Risk: Critical. Must NEVER be rendered 主 — that character is reserved exclusively, per baseline, for Christ’s exclusive divine Lordship (κύριος). CUV itself already distinguishes δεσπότης (主人, human master) from κύριος (主, the Lord) consistently; this package requires the same distinction be maintained without exception throughout Titus.
εὐάρεστοςeuarestos”well-pleasing”Conduct that pleases a master/Godwell-pleasing, pleasing讨喜悦的 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.
μὴ ἀντιλέγοντας, μὴ νοσφιζομένουςmē antilegontas, mē nosphizomenous”not talking back,” “not pilfering/embezzling”Practical conduct instructions for slavesnot talking back, not pilfering不顶撞、不私拿东西 (NEW TERMS). Risk: Low.
πίστιν πᾶσαν ἐνδεικνυμένους ἀγαθήνpistin pasan endeiknymenous agathēn”showing all good faith/fidelity”Trustworthy, reliable conduct — reuse 信 root in a non-salvific, character senseshowing all good faith, demonstrating complete trustworthiness显为完全可信/忠诚 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low-Medium. Note this is πίστις used in an everyday-trustworthiness sense, distinct from πίστις as saving faith (baseline Critical term) — same word, different register; flag for translator awareness so as not to over-theologize this occurrence.
τὴν διδασκαλίαν κοσμῶσινtēn didaskalian kosmōsin”adorn/beautify the doctrine”κοσμέω = to arrange/adorn/decorate (root of “cosmos” — ordered beauty) — good conduct makes sound doctrine visibly attractive to outside observersadorn the doctrine, make the teaching attractiveCUV renders this contextually as 尊荣 (“honor/bring glory to”), which captures the effect but loses the “beautify/adorn” imagery of the Greek使…人所信的道理更有光彩 / 尊荣我们救主神的道 (CUV pattern retained). Risk: Medium. Reuse 纯正的教义 root for “the doctrine”; note the CUV’s interpretive softening of κοσμέω’s adornment imagery into 尊荣 (honor) — acceptable for continuity with CUV tradition, but a teaching note may restore the “making attractive/beautiful” nuance so the good-works-adorn-the-gospel connection (paralleling 2:14, 3:8) is not lost.

Chapter 3 (Titus 3:1–15)

Titus 3:1–8 is the closing half of the core passage and is fully covered in Part 1 above; it is not repeated here. This section covers 3:9–15 (avoiding divisive controversies, closing instructions, and greeting).

γενεαλογίαςgenealogias”genealogies”In this context, speculative or legalistic genealogical arguments (likely tied to Jewish legal/ancestral disputes, cf. 1 Tim 1:4)genealogiesHIGH cultural-collision risk term.家谱 (jiāpǔ). Risk: High. In Chinese culture, 家谱 (family genealogical records) is a deeply significant practice tied to ancestor veneration, clan identity, and filial piety — genealogies are compiled, preserved, and consulted as objects of considerable reverence, often connected to ancestral-hall ritual. Paul’s warning targets a specific first-century pattern of speculative or legalistic genealogical argumentation used to fuel division (likely tied to Jewish legal pedigree disputes), NOT a blanket condemnation of interest in family history or ancestry as such. A teaching note is required distinguishing this narrow apostolic warning from the broader cultural practice of maintaining family genealogical records, which this doctrine does not address one way or the other.
ἔριςeris”strife, quarrel, contention”Interpersonal conflict, listed among works of the flesh elsewhere in Paul (cf. Galatians 5:20)strife, contention, quarrels纷争 (fēnzhēng, NEW TERM). Risk: Low.

αἱρετικὸν ἄνθρωπονhairetikon anthrōpon”a divisive/factious person” (root of English “heretic,” but here meaning a person who causes sectarian division, not yet the fully developed later doctrinal category of “heresy”)A person whose conduct creates schism/faction, regardless of the specific doctrinal contenta divisive person, a factious person, a person who causes divisionThe letter’s practical instruction for church discipline in the face of persistent division分门结党的人 (CUV pattern). Risk: Medium. Note the semantic-development point: this Greek word later became the technical term for “heretic” in Christian usage, but here in Titus it describes a behavior pattern (causing faction/division) more than a fixed doctrinal category; avoid over-reading later creedal-heresy categories back into this verse.
παραιτοῦparaitou”reject, have nothing more to do with”Formal disengagement after repeated warningreject, avoid, have nothing to do with弃绝/远避 (NEW TERM). Risk: Low.

Risk: High. The “fruit” (果, guǒ) metaphor for the outcome of one’s life or actions sits very close, in Chinese religious vocabulary, to 因果 (yīnguǒ, “cause and effect/karma”) and to 果报 (guǒbào, karmic retribution) — and note the baseline’s own forbidden phrase 修成正果 (“cultivating to attain the true fruit/result,” forbidden for “justification”) already flags this exact character 果 as a site of Buddhist/Daoist attainment-framework collision. Teaching on 3:14’s “let ours also learn to be unfruitful no longer” (μὴ…ἄκαρποι) must make clear that the “fruit” in view is the relational, others-benefiting good works described in 3:8 (a consequence flowing from grace already received), not a self-generated karmic outcome accumulating toward one’s own future merit or destiny.
