Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Galatians (English → Mandarin)
Scope and Method
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion in Galatians 1–6, every messianic reference and typological pattern, and every substantive parallel to the Romans curriculum already governed by the baseline Language Package. Citations are given in normalized form (Galatians 2:16, Genesis 15:6) to support automated cross-reference linking in Phase 2. Where Galatians and Romans quote, allude to, or theologically depend on the same OT text or the same doctrinal formulation, a rendering-consistency rule is specified: the Mandarin text MUST match verbatim (or, where the surrounding grammar differs, must use identical terminology for every load-bearing term) across both curricula. This is a direct extension of the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).

PART 1 — OT Quotations and Allusions by Chapter
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 1:1 | Paul’s Apostleship (divine, not human, commissioning) | Paul | Allusion to prophetic call-narratives where God, not a human institution, commissions his messenger (cf. Jeremiah 1:4-5; Isaiah 6:8) | Low. Ensure 使徒 (apostle) framing preserves the “not from men, not through man” contrast; avoid any teacher-lineage resonance (see 07 §Ch.1). |
| Galatians 1:4 | Christ’s self-giving for sins | Christ | Echoes the substitutionary, self-giving language of Isaiah 53’s Suffering Servant (“gave himself for our sins… to deliver us”) | Medium. Render 为我们的罪舍己 consistently with 2:20’s 为我舍己 (see Part 3 below); preserve substitutionary ὑπέρ-force, not mere moral example. |
| Galatians 1:15 | Divine Calling / Election | Paul | Allusion to Jeremiah 1:5 (“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you… I appointed you a prophet”) and Isaiah 49:1 (the Servant “called… from the womb”) | High. Must be read as a personal, pre-natal, gracious divine summons — never assimilated to 天命 (Mandate of Heaven) language already forbidden under baseline calling/called entries. |
| Galatians 1:19 | Paul’s Apostleship | James (the Lord’s brother) | Historical/genealogical note; no direct OT quotation | Low. Proper name handling only. |
Chapter 2 (vv. 1–14; the core passage vv. 15-21 is treated separately in Part 2)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 2:6 | Universal Human Accountability / impartial justice | Jerusalem apostles (Peter, James, John) | Allusion to Deuteronomy 10:17 and Leviticus 19:15 (“God shows no partiality”), a recurring OT formula also echoed at Romans 2:11 | High. Must render consistently with Romans 2:11’s “no distinction” language (see baseline doctrine universal_scope_of_gospel); do not soften toward a graded civilizational-hierarchy reading. |
| Galatians 2:9 | Christian Fellowship / apostolic recognition | Peter (Cephas), James, John, Paul, Barnabas | No direct OT citation; ecclesial-historical note | Low. 团契 (fellowship) as formal recognition, per baseline. |
Chapter 3
This chapter contains the highest concentration of formal OT citations in the letter — it is structured almost entirely as a chain of scriptural proofs.
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 3:6 | Justification by Faith; Imputed Righteousness | Abraham | Direct quotation: Genesis 15:6 — “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” | Critical. This is the SAME citation quoted at Romans 4:3 and alluded to at Romans 4:9,22. Mandarin rendering MUST be verbatim identical to the Romans rendering of Genesis 15:6 (see Part 3, Rule 1). |
| Galatians 3:8 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; universal scope of gospel | Abraham | Quotation/conflation: Genesis 12:3 and Genesis 18:18 — “In you shall all the nations be blessed” | High. This is called “the gospel” preached beforehand to Abraham (προευηγγελίσατο) — translators must render 福音 continuity across covenant eras explicit; do not let 万国 read as merely political/dynastic blessing. |
| Galatians 3:10 | The Law’s Purpose; curse of the law | — | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 27:26 — “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law” | Critical. 咒诅 (curse) rendering must match the Ch.1 anathema/curse entry (see 07 §Ch.1); this is God’s covenant sanction, not folk-magic. |
| Galatians 3:11 | Justification by Faith | — (prophet Habakkuk as source) | Direct quotation: Habakkuk 2:4 — “The righteous shall live by faith” | Critical. IDENTICAL citation to Romans 1:17, the baseline’s designated thesis-statement verse requiring cross-document verbatim consistency (see Part 3, Rule 2). This is the single highest-priority consistency requirement in this entire cross-reference analysis. |
| Galatians 3:12 | The Law’s Purpose | — | Direct quotation: Leviticus 18:5 — “The one who does them shall live by them” | High. Sets up the law/faith antithesis; render 律法 consistently, and preserve the conditional “doing” logic Paul is rejecting as a basis for right standing. |
| Galatians 3:13 | The Law’s Purpose; Crucified with Christ (typological curse-bearing) | Christ | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 21:23 — “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” | Critical. Christ’s substitutionary curse-bearing; preserve ὑπέρ (“for us”) force identically to the 2:20 and Romans 8:3 substitutionary pattern (see Part 3, Rule 3). Never let 咒诅 read as an independent, self-operating force apart from God’s judicial act. |
| Galatians 3:16 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Messianic Promise | Abraham, Christ | Allusion: Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 17:8; 24:7 (“to your offspring/seed”) | Critical. See 07 §Ch.3 note on Chinese number-neutral 后裔; mandatory translator’s note explaining Paul’s singular/plural grammatical argument, which Mandarin cannot natively reproduce. |
| Galatians 3:17 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Abraham, Moses | Allusion: Exodus 12:40 (430 years from the patriarchal promise to the giving of the law at Sinai) | Medium. Chronological/historical background note; ensure OT narrative literacy gap (per baseline tone requirements) is bridged with a brief explanatory note for readers unfamiliar with the Exodus timeline. |
| Galatians 3:19 | The Law’s Purpose | Moses, angels | Allusion: Exodus 19–20 (the giving of the law at Sinai) and Deuteronomy 33:2 (law given “through angels,” a Second-Temple Jewish interpretive tradition) | Medium. 中间人 (mediator) rendering for Moses’ role; must not use 中保 (reserved for Christ’s unique mediatorial office elsewhere in the curriculum, per 07/08). |
| Galatians 3:29 | Adoption and Sonship; Abrahamic Covenant | Abraham | Allusion back to the Genesis promise-to-Abraham material (Genesis 12, 15, 17, 22) | High. 后嗣/承受产业的 (heir) must retain universal scope (3:28’s “no longer Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female”) — do not narrow to clan-lineage inheritance categories. |
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 4:4 | Incarnation; Messianic Promise; Abrahamic Covenant fulfillment | Christ | Fulfillment formula (“when the fullness of time had come”) echoing prophetic time-fulfillment language (cf. Daniel 9:24-27; Mark 1:15) | Critical. Pair with baseline’s 道成肉身 (incarnation, Critical) and 神的儿子 (Son of God, Critical) entries exactly; this verse is the letter’s own incarnation/sonship statement, parallel to Romans 1:3-4’s “seed of David… declared Son of God.” |
| Galatians 4:21-31 | Law and Grace; Freedom in Christ; Abrahamic Covenant (allegorical/typological reading) | Hagar, Sarah, Ishmael, Isaac, Abraham | Direct narrative basis: Genesis 16, 17, 21 | High. Paul explicitly calls this an ἀλληγορούμενα (“allegory,” 4:24); teaching material must frame this as inspired typological argument specific to this passage’s polemical purpose, not a general model for allegorizing OT narrative, and must not be read as ethical commentary on the historical treatment of Hagar. |
| Galatians 4:27 | Freedom in Christ; Abrahamic Covenant | Sarah (typologically) | Direct quotation: Isaiah 54:1 — “Rejoice, O barren one, who does not bear…” | Medium. Preserve the reversal-of-fortune/promise logic (the barren woman’s children exceed the fruitful one’s) without collapsing it into a generic “blessing” framing disconnected from the covenant-promise argument. |
| Galatians 4:30 | Law and Grace; Freedom in Christ | Hagar, Ishmael, Sarah, Isaac | Direct quotation: Genesis 21:10 — “Cast out the slave woman and her son” | High. Typological conclusion, not a moral endorsement of Sarah’s action nor commentary on slavery/concubinage as an institution; must be flagged for a clarifying teaching note (see 07 §Ch.4). |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 5:14 | Fruit of the Spirit; Faith Working through Love; Law and Grace | — | Direct quotation: Leviticus 19:18 — “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” | Critical. IDENTICAL citation to Romans 13:9. Mandarin rendering MUST match verbatim across both curricula (see Part 3, Rule 4). This verse also directly supplies the content of “the law of Christ” at Galatians 6:2 — cross-reference internally as well as to Romans. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 6:2 | Bearing One Another’s Burdens; Law and Grace | Christ | Internal cross-reference back to Galatians 5:14 (Leviticus 19:18) as the content of “the law of Christ” | High. See 07/08 note: must never be taught as re-opening the works/grace question; render 基督的律法 with the mandatory clarifying note every occurrence. |
| Galatians 6:7-8 | Fruit of the Spirit; Flesh versus Spirit | — | General wisdom-tradition sowing/reaping motif (cf. Job 4:8; Proverbs 22:8; Hosea 8:7) — not a formal citation but a recognized OT wisdom pattern | High. Distinguish God’s personal moral governance from the impersonal Chinese Buddhist-folk proverb 种因得果 (see 07 §Ch.6). |
| Galatians 6:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Church as God’s People | — | Allusion: Psalm 125:5 and Psalm 128:6 (“peace be upon…”) applied to “the Israel of God” | High. 以色列 (Israel) here is applied to the believing community, Jew and Gentile together “in Christ” — must not be read as displacing or claiming ethnic Israel’s identity, nor introduce unrelated contemporary political sensitivity (cf. baseline israel entry’s note on contemporary political sensitivity); frame strictly in its Pauline theological sense of the true covenant people constituted by faith. |
PART 2 — Core Passage (Galatians 2:15-21): Consolidated Cross-Reference Notes
The core passage does not itself contain a formal OT quotation (its quotations arrive in Chapter 3), but it is saturated with OT covenantal categories and stands in the tightest parallel relationship to Romans of any passage in the letter.
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 2:15 | Justification by Faith; Universal Human Accountability | Paul, Peter | Presupposes the Jew/Gentile covenant-boundary categories of the OT (e.g., Exodus 19:5-6’s distinct “treasured possession” status) | High. 生来/罪人 rendering must not let ethnic-Jewish birth-status read as a spiritual exemption; parallels Romans 2:17-29’s critique of Jewish privilege-assumption. |
| Galatians 2:16 | Justification by Faith; Law and Grace | Paul, Peter | Direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 3:20 (“no one will be justified by works of the law”) and Romans 3:28 (“justified by faith apart from works of the law”) — near-identical Greek phrasing (ἐξ ἔργων νόμου) | Critical. This is the letter’s central polemical formula and its closest doctrinal twin in Romans. See Part 3, Rule 5 for the required rendering-consistency treatment of “works of the law” / 律法的行为 across both curricula. |
| Galatians 2:17 | Justification by Faith; Christian Identity in Christ | Christ | Parallel concept to Romans 6:1-2’s rhetorical question form (“shall we go on sinning…?”) — both use a reductio ad absurdum structure | Medium. 在基督里 (in Christ) rendering must stay identical to its Romans usage; see baseline doctrine christian_identity_in_christ. |
| Galatians 2:18 | Justification by Faith | Paul (self-referential) | No direct OT citation; logical/rhetorical argument | Low. |
| Galatians 2:19-20 | Crucified with Christ; Christian Identity in Christ | Christ | Direct doctrinal and near-verbal parallel to Romans 6:6 (“our old self was crucified with him”) and Romans 6:11 (“consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God”) | Critical. 与基督同钉十字架 must match the Romans 6:6 rendering pattern exactly (see Part 3, Rule 6); 向神活着 parallels Romans 6:11’s 向神活着 formula precisely and must be rendered identically. |
| Galatians 2:20 | Sonship of Christ; Crucified with Christ | Christ, Son of God | 神的儿子 (Son of God) here identifies the crucified/risen Christ presently living in the believer — parallel to Romans 8:3’s “his own Son” sent in the flesh, and to the whole Romans 8 union-with-Christ complex | Critical. Reuse baseline 神的儿子 exactly; never abbreviate. |
| Galatians 2:21 | Law and Grace; Justification by Faith | Christ | Direct conceptual parallel to Romans 11:6 (“if by grace, then it is no longer on the basis of works”) | Critical. 废掉 (nullify) and 徒然 (in vain) must preserve the same absolute either/or logic the baseline requires for the grace-versus-merit contrast (Romans 4:4-5; 11:5-6). |
PART 3 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallel Formulations (Galatians ↔ Romans)
Because Galatians and Romans share both a translator and a target-language audience within this Language Package, the following six rules are MANDATORY. A violation of any rule below must be flagged for human theologian review regardless of the term’s individually assigned risk tier.
Rule 1 — Genesis 15:6 (Galatians 3:6 / Romans 4:3, 4:9, 4:22). The quotation “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” (亚伯拉罕信神,这就算为他的义) must be rendered identically in both curricula. This citation directly employs the baseline’s Critical-risk 算为义 (imputed righteousness) term; any deviation in wording between the two curricula’s Scripture-quotation text risks appearing to teach two different doctrines from the same verse.
Rule 2 — Habakkuk 2:4 (Galatians 3:11 / Romans 1:17).
“The righteous shall live by faith” (义人必因信得生 / CUV: 义人必因信而活) is explicitly designated in the baseline (12_ai_translation_requirements.md, Theological Consistency Rules table) as requiring identical rendering wherever it recurs, since Romans 1:16-17 is the thesis statement of the Romans curriculum. Galatians 3:11 quotes the identical verse to ground the identical doctrine (justification by faith, not law-works). This is the single highest-priority consistency rule in this cross-reference analysis — the two curricula’s core theological claims converge on one shared OT proof-text.
Rule 3 — Substitutionary curse-bearing (Galatians 3:13 / Romans 8:3). Both passages describe Christ voluntarily taking on a condemned position (Galatians: “become a curse for us,” quoting Deuteronomy 21:23; Romans: God condemning sin in Christ’s flesh) on believers’ behalf. The ὑπέρ (“for/on behalf of”) substitutionary force must be rendered with equivalent Mandarin substitutionary vocabulary (为我们/替我们) in both passages — never softened toward a merely exemplary-sacrifice reading in either curriculum.
Rule 4 — Leviticus 19:18 (Galatians 5:14 / Romans 13:9). “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (爱人如己) must be rendered identically in both curricula. Both Paul’s letters cite this verse as the summary of “the law” fulfilled through love — Galatians ties it additionally to “the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Consistency here also protects the internal Galatians cross-reference between 5:14 and 6:2.
Rule 5 — “Works of the law” / ἔργα νόμου (Galatians 2:16, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10 / Romans 3:20, 3:27-28, 9:32). Although this exact compound is not previously registered in the Romans baseline translation memory as a standalone entry, the underlying Greek phrase occurs in both letters as the rejected counterpart to faith-based justification. The newly proposed Galatians rendering 律法的行为 (with CUV’s verbal alternative 因行律法) must be back-applied consistently to the equivalent Romans occurrences when both curricula are used together by the same learner, so that the antithesis “not by works of the law… but through faith” reads as the identical doctrinal claim in both books. Flag for theologian review at every occurrence in either curriculum.
Rule 6 — “Crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20 / Romans 6:6). 与基督同钉十字架 (Galatians 2:20) and 我们的旧人与他同钉十字架 (Romans 6:6, “our old self was crucified with him”) share the same συσταυρόω root and the same completed-past-event, no-longer-repeatable theological force. The verb-phrase core 同钉十字架 must appear identically in both curricula; only the surrounding subject (「我」 in Galatians’ first-person testimony vs. 「我们的旧人」 in Romans’ corporate-old-self language) differs by design and must be preserved as-is, not harmonized away.
PART 4 — Messianic References and Typology
| Type/Reference | OT Basis | NT Fulfillment/Antitype | Passage(s) in Galatians | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The singular “Seed” of Abraham | Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 17:8; 24:7 | Christ, as the singular heir of the Abrahamic promise, with believers included “in him” | Galatians 3:16, 3:29 | Critical — see Ch.3 note above; grammatical singular/plural argument does not transfer natively into Mandarin 后裔. |
| Abraham as pattern of justification by faith | Genesis 15:6 | All who believe, “the sons of Abraham” by faith, not physical descent | Galatians 3:6-9, 3:29 | High — must be taught as a pattern (not a strict typological “shadow-fulfillment” like Passover→Christ), consistent with Romans 4’s identical use of Abraham. |
| Isaac, “child of promise” | Genesis 17:15-21; 21:1-7 | Believers, “children of promise, like Isaac” (Galatians 4:28), born of the Spirit’s promise rather than natural/fleshly effort | Galatians 4:21-31 | High — typological application specific to this allegory; do not extend as a general model for allegorical exegesis elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| Hagar/Sarah — two covenants | Genesis 16, 21 | Sinai covenant (slavery, present Jerusalem) vs. promise covenant (freedom, “Jerusalem above”) | Galatians 4:24-26 | High — explicitly labeled ἀλληγορούμενα by Paul himself; teaching material must mark this as a bounded, text-specific interpretive move. |
| Moses as law-mediator | Exodus 19-20; Deuteronomy 33:2 | Contrasted (not typologically fulfilled, but structurally surpassed) by the direct, unmediated nature of the promise “God is one” (Galatians 3:20) | Galatians 3:19-20 | Medium — 中间人 (mediator) for Moses must be kept distinct from 中保, reserved for Christ’s unique mediatorial office elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| The curse-bearer on the tree | Deuteronomy 21:23 | Christ, who “became a curse for us” | Galatians 3:13 | Critical — direct messianic/substitutionary fulfillment; see Rule 3 above. |
| Fullness-of-time Son | Prophetic time-fulfillment pattern (cf. Daniel 9:24-27) | Christ, “born of a woman, born under the law” | Galatians 4:4 | Critical — pairs with baseline’s 道成肉身 and 神的儿子 entries; parallels Romans 1:3-4. |
| ”Israel of God” | Psalm 125:5; 128:6 (peace-benediction pattern); covenant-people theology throughout the Torah and Prophets | The believing community, Jew and Gentile united in Christ | Galatians 6:16 | High — must not be read as displacing ethnic Israel or importing unrelated contemporary political sensitivity; strictly the Pauline theological sense. |
PART 5 — Summary: Priority Flags for Phase 2 Routing
The following passages require human theologian review at every occurrence, independent of the individual term risk tiers already assigned in 08_core_glossary.md, because they involve a cross-curriculum shared-quotation consistency requirement:
- Galatians 3:6 (↔ Romans 4:3, 4:9, 4:22) — Genesis 15:6
- Galatians 3:11 (↔ Romans 1:17) — Habakkuk 2:4 — highest priority
- Galatians 3:13 (↔ Romans 8:3) — substitutionary curse-bearing
- Galatians 5:14 / 6:2 (↔ Romans 13:9) — Leviticus 19:18
- Galatians 2:16, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10 (↔ Romans 3:20, 3:27-28, 9:32) — “works of the law”
- Galatians 2:19-20 (↔ Romans 6:6, 6:11) — “crucified with Christ” / “live to God”
All other OT quotations and allusions catalogued above follow the standard risk-tier routing already defined in doctrine_risk_registry.json; native speaker review is sufficient except where a Critical or High doctrine (Messianic Promise, Incarnation, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Justification, Grace, Law’s Purpose) is directly in view.
End of cross-reference analysis. See 10_biblical_theme_map.md for the letter’s thematic architecture and canon-wide theme connections.
