Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (English → Mandarin)

Purpose and Method

This document analyzes the entire book of 2 Timothy in the original Koine Greek, chapter 1 through chapter 4, for the purpose of building destination-language (Mandarin) translation requirements. It extends — and never contradicts — the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Every term already recorded in the baseline translation memory is reused exactly as recorded; this document flags each such reuse explicitly. New terms required by 2 Timothy’s doctrinal content — Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture, Perseverance under Suffering, Guarding Sound Doctrine, Faithful Transmission of the Gospel, The Charge to Preach the Word, Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days, and Assurance of Reward — are analyzed here for the first time and proposed for addition to translation memory in a subsequent step.

The core passage, 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter of the book (1, 2, 3:1–13, 4:6–22) receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary. No chapter is silently skipped.

Cross-cutting alert established up front: 2 Timothy’s pastoral vocabulary repeatedly uses 道 (dào, “way/word/doctrine”) to render λόγος (“the word/message”) and πίστις (“the faith,” in idiomatic constructions) — e.g., 传道 (“preach the word,” 4:2), 神的道 (“the word of God,” 2:9), 真道 (“the truth,” 4:4), 所信的道 (“the faith,” 4:7). The baseline package already flags 道’s collision with Daoist impersonal cosmic metaphysics under incarnation (道成肉身). Because 2 Timothy’s central charge — guard and preach “the word/the faith” — depends on this same character far more heavily than Romans did, this risk is elevated to a standing Critical-tier cross-reference for this curriculum: every occurrence of 道 as a rendering of “word/message/faith” must carry the same clarifying instruction as 道成肉身 — this is the personal, apostolic, once-delivered gospel message, not the impersonal Daoist Way.

Scripture’s origin is God’s own breath, not human insight or a channeled message神所感示的 (shén suǒ gǎnshì de); doctrine-level noun: 默示 (mòshì), matching baseline doctrine registry’s “圣经的默示”Critical — must never be rendered in a way that suggests a human medium receiving and transmitting messages from a spirit, as in Chinese folk-religious 通灵 (tōnglíng, spirit-channeling/mediumship) practice. Scripture is God’s own breath expressed through human authors under his sovereign superintendence, not a trance-channeled communication.

Also inherits the 道 cross-cutting collision. Must be taught with the health/disease contrast made explicit (cf. 2:17).

μῦθοςmythosmyth, fable, invented storyfictional or fabricated narrativemyths, fablesFalse, fabricated teaching replacing the truth无稽之谈 (wújī zhī tán)Medium — forbidden substitution: never 神话 (shénhuà), which literally contains 神 (God/deity) and would misleadingly suggest “God’s own story” rather than a baseless human fabrication

Biblical “guarding the deposit” is safeguarding an already-complete, unchanging apostolic message given once for all, not passing on a living, evolving mind-to-mind realization.

ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραιςen eschatais hēmeraisin the last daysthe final period of redemptive history before Christ’s returnin the last daysCRITICAL — title-anchor term for “Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days.” Linear, historical end-time period, inaugurated by Christ’s first coming and consummated at his return末后的日子 / 末世 (mòhòu de rìzi / mòshì)Critical — must be distinguished from Buddhist cyclical kalpa-ending cosmology (劫, jié) and from Chinese folk-millenarian movements (e.g., historic White Lotus-type eschatological uprisings) that anticipate a coming cosmic renewal/savior-figure — extends the baseline’s Critical 弥勒/Messiah flag. Note also: 末世 (mòshì, “last days”) is a rare exact homophone of 默示 (mòshì, “inspiration,” 3:16) — a coincidence worth flagging for oral/catechetical contexts even though the written characters differ.

This is a gift graciously bestowed by the righteous Judge upon those who have persevered by faith, not a status earned by merit-accumulation or a political title.

Chapter 4:6-22 doctrine touchpoints: Assurance of Reward (4:6-8); Perseverance under Suffering (4:6-7, 16-18); personal names (Demas, Crescens, Titus, Luke, Mark, Tychicus, Alexander, Prisca, Aquila, Onesiphorus’s household) — proper names only, no new theological vocabulary; use established CUV transliterations (底马, 革勒士, 提多, 路加, 马可, 推基古, 亚历山大, 百基拉, 亚居拉).

Part 3 — Cross-Cutting Observations for Phase 2

  1. 道 (dào) as the recurring rendering for λόγος/πίστις (“the word/the faith”) appears at 2:9 (神的道), 4:2 (传道), 4:4 (真道), 4:7 (所信的道), and within 3:16’s teaching cluster indirectly. This is a Critical-tier standing risk unique to this curriculum (more pervasive here than in Romans) and must be flagged for clarifying instruction at every occurrence, not just where 道成肉身 itself appears.
  2. παραθήκη / παρατίθημι (“deposit/entrust”) at 1:12, 1:14, 2:2 is the theological backbone linking “Guarding Sound Doctrine” and “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.” It must be shielded from a Chan Buddhist 传法 (dharma-transmission) reading throughout.
  3. The “healthy teaching vs. spreading disease” metaphor (ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία, 4:3; ὑγιαινόντων λόγων, 1:13; γάγγραινα, 2:17) is only partially preserved by CUV’s purity-idiom 纯正; Phase 2 materials should recover the health/disease contrast explicitly in teaching notes even where the Mandarin term itself is purity-flavored.
  4. ἐπιφάνεια (“appearing”) at 1:10, 4:1, 4:8 must be taught as exactly two unique historical events (first coming, second coming), not a repeatable divine manifestation.
  5. εὐσέβεια/敬虔 (“godliness”) at 3:5, 3:12 requires the same generic-piety caution the baseline already applies to 虔诚 under “faith.”
  6. No chapter of 2 Timothy is without load-bearing theological vocabulary; full-book coverage (chs. 1–4) is confirmed complete above.
