Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Ephesians (English → Mandarin)
This document extends the baseline Romans 11_doctrine_analysis.md reference framework to the full book of Ephesians (chapters 1–6), anchored in the core passage Ephesians 2:1–10. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Ephesians) supplied for this curriculum: every doctrine name, risk tier, and review routing below matches that registry exactly. This file adds chapter-by-chapter coverage and translation-risk reasoning; it does not alter any tier.
Risk tier definitions (unchanged from baseline):
| Tier | Definition | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine | Human theologian, every occurrence |
| High | Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk | Human theologian |
| Medium | Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning | Native speaker review |
| Low | Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision | Automated review |
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Walkthrough
Ephesians 1 — Election, Adoption, and the Supremacy of Christ
Ephesians 1 is doctrinally dense and introduces most of the curriculum’s Critical-tier material.
- 1:1 — Apostolic authorship and address to “the saints” → Apostolic and Prophetic Foundation (Low), Sainthood (baseline, High, reused).
- 1:3–14 — The great blessing-doxology: election “before the foundation of the world” (1:4), predestination “according to the purpose of his will” (1:5, 1:11), redemption, sealing with the Spirit, guarantee of inheritance → Election and Predestination in Christ (Critical), Sonship and Adoption (High), Inheritance and Assurance of Salvation (High), Thanksgiving and Praise (Low, for the doxological framing itself).
- 1:13 — “you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” → Inheritance and Assurance of Salvation (High).
- 1:15–19 — Paul’s prayer for the readers’ knowledge of “the hope of his calling” and “the immeasurable greatness of his power” → Divine Calling (High), baseline Power of God (High, reused).
- 1:20–23 — Christ raised, seated “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion,” head over all things, head of the church, his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all → Deity and Lordship of Christ (Critical), Church as the Body of Christ (High), Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ (Critical).

Ephesians 2 — Core Passage: Grace, Faith, New Humanity
This chapter contains the curriculum’s theological anchor (2:1–10) and its second major doctrinal cluster (2:11–22).
- 2:1–3 — “dead in trespasses and sins,” walking “according to the prince of the power of the air,” “by nature children of wrath” → Universal Human Depravity Prior to Grace (High), Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers (Critical, via 2:2’s “prince of the power of the air”).
- 2:4–7 — “But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ… by grace you have been saved” → Salvation by Grace through Faith (Critical), baseline Resurrection language reused for “made alive.”
- 2:8–10 — “For by grace you have been saved through faith… not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand” → the curriculum’s thesis statement, requiring identical rendering wherever quoted elsewhere: Salvation by Grace through Faith (Critical) and Grace Versus Works (Critical). This is the single highest-stakes segment in the entire curriculum.
- 2:11–13 — Gentiles “separated from Christ… strangers to the covenants of promise,” now brought near “by the blood of Christ” → Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity (Critical), Reconciliation and Peace with God (High).
- 2:14–18 — dividing wall broken down, hostility abolished, “one new man,” reconciliation, access to the Father through the Spirit → Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Critical), Reconciliation and Peace with God (High), Prayer and Access to God (Medium).
- 2:19–22 — “fellow citizens… members of the household of God,” built on the apostles/prophets, Christ the cornerstone, growing into “a holy temple,” God’s dwelling place by the Spirit → Apostolic and Prophetic Foundation (Low), Church as the Body of Christ (High, temple imagery), Sanctification and Holiness (Critical, “holy temple”).
Chapter 2 doctrine coverage confirmed: Salvation by Grace through Faith, Grace Versus Works, Universal Human Depravity, Spiritual Authorities, Unity of Jews and Gentiles, Reconciliation and Peace, Prayer/Access, Church as Body of Christ, Sanctification and Holiness, Apostolic Foundation.
Ephesians 3 — The Mystery of Christ and Paul’s Ministry
- 3:1–6 — “the mystery of Christ… revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,” Gentiles “fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise” → The Mystery of Christ Revealed (High), Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Critical), Sonship and Adoption (High, “fellow heirs”).
- 3:7–9 — Paul as “minister” of this grace, given “to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,” making known “the plan/stewardship of the mystery” → Mystery of Christ Revealed (High), Gifts for Building Up the Church (Medium, “minister/deacon” 执事).
- 3:10 — the church makes known God’s wisdom “to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” → Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers (Critical), Mystery of Christ Revealed (High).
- 3:11–13 — access to God “with boldness and confidence through faith in him,” “according to the eternal purpose” → Election and Predestination in Christ (Critical, “eternal purpose”), Prayer and Access to God (Medium).
- 3:14–21 — prayer that believers be strengthened “in the inner man,” know “the love of Christ,” be filled with “all the fullness of God”; closing doxology → Church as Body of Christ (High, “fullness”), Sanctification and Holiness (Critical, inner strengthening), Thanksgiving and Praise (Low).

- 4:1–6 — “walk worthy of the calling,” “one body, one Spirit… one Lord, one faith… one God and Father of all,” “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” → Divine Calling (High), Mutual Edification and Unity of the Spirit (Medium), Deity and Lordship of Christ (Critical, “one Lord”).
- 4:7–13 — grace given to each “according to the measure of Christ’s gift”; the ascended Christ gives apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers “to equip the saints… for building up the body of Christ” → Gifts for Building Up the Church (Medium), Church as Body of Christ (High).
- 4:14–16 — no longer children tossed by every wind of doctrine; growing up “into him who is the head,” the whole body “joined and held together,” “speaking the truth in love” → Church as Body of Christ (High), Mutual Edification and Unity of the Spirit (Medium).
- 4:17–24 — no longer walk as the Gentiles do, “darkened in their understanding,” “put off your old self,” “be renewed in the spirit of your minds,” “put on the new self” → Walking in Newness of Life (High), Universal Human Depravity (High, describing unbelieving Gentile life).
- 4:25–32 — practical “put off / put on” ethics: falsehood, anger, theft, corrupting talk, and the climax “forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” → Walking in Newness of Life (High), baseline Grace (Critical, as the model for forgiveness).
Chapter 4 doctrine coverage confirmed: Divine Calling, Mutual Edification/Unity of the Spirit, Deity/Lordship of Christ, Gifts for Building Up the Church, Church as Body of Christ, Walking in Newness of Life, Universal Human Depravity (retrospective).
Ephesians 5 — Holiness, Marriage, and Filling with the Spirit
- 5:1–7 — “be imitators of God,” walk in love as Christ’s “offering and sacrifice,” warning against sexual immorality, covetousness, and idolatry, “for no… covetous person (who is an idolater) has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God” → Sanctification and Holiness (Critical), Idolatry and Covetousness (Critical), Salvation by Grace through Faith (Critical, via the offering/sacrifice imagery echoing Christ’s atoning self-gift), Inheritance and Assurance of Salvation (High, negatively stated).
- 5:8–14 — “walk as children of light,” “the fruit of light,” exposing darkness → Walking in Newness of Life (High).
- 5:15–20 — walk wisely, “be filled with the Spirit,” singing and giving thanks → Walking in Newness of Life (High), Thanksgiving and Praise (Low), and the new term “filled with the Spirit” carrying High risk against ecstatic-possession misreadings (documented under Gifts/Sanctification clusters).
- 5:21–33 — mutual submission, wives/husbands, Christ as “head of the church,” Christ’s self-giving love, marriage as a picture of “Christ and the church,” “this mystery is profound (great)” → Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships (Critical), Marriage as a Type of Christ and the Church (High), Mystery of Christ Revealed (High), Deity and Lordship of Christ (Critical, “Savior,” 5:23).
Chapter 5 doctrine coverage confirmed: Sanctification/Holiness, Idolatry and Covetousness, Salvation by Grace through Faith, Inheritance/Assurance, Walking in Newness of Life, Thanksgiving, Household Codes, Marriage as Type of Christ/Church, Mystery of Christ Revealed, Deity/Lordship of Christ.
Ephesians 6 — Household Codes Continued and the Armor of God
- 6:1–4 — children obey/honor parents “in the Lord,” fathers not to provoke children but bring them up “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” → Parent-Child Relationships in the Lord (High), Household Codes (Critical, continued frame).

- 6:10–20 — “put on the whole armor of God,” struggle against “the rulers… the authorities… the cosmic powers over this present darkness… the spiritual forces of evil,” each armor piece named, prayer “at all times in the Spirit” → Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God (Critical), Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers (Critical), Prayer and Access to God (Medium).
- 6:21–24 — closing greetings, grace benediction → baseline Grace (Critical), Thanksgiving and Praise (Low, closing blessing tone).
Chapter 6 doctrine coverage confirmed: Parent-Child Relationships, Household Codes, Master-Bondservant Relationships, Deity/Lordship of Christ, Spiritual Warfare/Armor of God, Spiritual Authorities, Prayer/Access, Grace (closing).
Part B — Full Doctrine Matrix (All 26 Doctrines, Cross-Referenced to Registry)

| 7 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 1, 2, 3, 6 | 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:10-20 | Critical | 魔鬼 = one singular personal adversary, never generic folk ghosts (鬼); armor language ≠ martial-arts cultivation (武功修炼) or amulets (护身符). | Human theologian |
| 8 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 5, 6 | 5:21-33; 6:1-9 | Critical | 顺服 must foreground mutual submission (5:21) and Christ’s self-sacrificial headship-love (5:25), distinct from one-directional Confucian 三纲 (夫为妻纲); 孝敬父母 anchored “in the Lord,” distinct from 祭祖. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Gifts for Building Up the Church | 3, 4 | 3:7; 4:7-13; 4:29 | Medium | Fivefold office terms are established, low-collision vocabulary; main risk is 执事 vs. temple functionary (庙中执事); 装备 usefully echoes armor imagery. | Native speaker review |
| 10 | Walking in Newness of Life | 2, 4, 5 | 2:10; 4:1, 17-24; 5:1-2, 8, 15 | High | 旧人/新人 = decisive conversion break + ongoing Spirit-wrought 更新, not gradual Neo-Confucian self-cultivation (修身) or meditative technique (打坐/修心); 行 ≠ meritorious pilgrimage-walking (朝圣). | Human theologian |
| 11 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | 1, 4, 5, 6 | 1:20-23; 4:5; 5:23 | Critical | 主 must remain exclusive, supreme Lordship over church and cosmic powers alike; never diluted to 主人/老爷 or “an especially exalted being” among a folk celestial bureaucracy. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Sonship and Adoption into God’s Family | 1, 3 | 1:5, 11, 14, 18; 2:18; 3:6 | High | 儿子的名分/基业 = full relational sonship with complete inheritance rights, never instrumental 过继 (clan-heir transfer for ancestor-rite continuation). | Human theologian |
| 13 | Universal Human Depravity Prior to Grace | 2, 4 | 2:1-3; 4:17-19 | High | 本性 (“by nature,” 2:3) directly confronts mainstream Confucian 性善论 (Mencian innate-goodness anthropology); must state inborn condition under judgment without denying image-of-God dignity (1:4). | Human theologian |
| 14 | Divine Calling | 1, 4 | 1:18; 4:1, 4 | High | 呼召 kept distinct from 天命 (Mandate of Heaven); personal relational summons to hope and manner of life, not cosmic entitlement. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Sanctification and Holiness | 1, 2, 3, 5 | 1:4; 2:21; 3:16-19; 5:26-27 | Critical | Any 成圣 usage reuses baseline Critical caution: Neo-Confucian self-cultivation-into-sagehood term; 5:26-27 grounds holiness in Christ’s own cleansing action via his word, not self-performed ritual washing (洁净仪式). | Human theologian |
| 16 | Reconciliation and Peace with God | 2 | 2:13-18 | High | 和好 ≠ Confucian ritual-propriety-restored harmony (礼); 平安 distinguished from folk-amulet general good-fortune; 基督的血 ≠ ritual blood-oath bonding (歃血为盟). | Human theologian |
| 17 | Prayer and Access to God | 2, 3, 6 | 2:18; 3:12; 6:18 | Medium | 可以进到…面前 = direct, unmediated access through Christ/Spirit, contrasted with mediums (灵媒) in Chinese folk religious practice. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | Inheritance and Assurance of Salvation | 1, 4 | 1:11-14; 4:30 | High | 印记 ≠ Daoist/folk talisman (符); God’s own ownership-mark and covenant guarantee. 凭据 is God’s pledge to the believer, not a human-produced pledge. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Idolatry and Covetousness | 5 | 5:5 | Critical | 拜偶像的 names widespread family/cultural religious practice directly; requires deliberate pastoral framing distinguishing covetousness-as-idolatry from blanket condemnation of family religious customs. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ | 1, 2, 3, 6 | 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12 | Critical | Never assimilate to legitimate-seeming folk pantheon (城隍, 土地公, 玉皇大帝); powers are real, personal, illegitimate, defeated — to resist, never to appease or negotiate with. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Marriage as a Type of Christ and the Church | 5 | 5:22-33 | High | 元首 applied to husband bounded by Christ’s self-sacrificial love (5:25), not Confucian 夫为妻纲; 奥秘 (5:32) is specific redemptive-typological picture, not abstract yin-yang complementarity. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Parent-Child Relationships in the Lord | 6 | 6:1-4 | High | 孝敬父母 carries strong positive 孝 resonance but must be anchored “in the Lord,” distinct from filial duty as autonomous virtue, and distinct from ancestor veneration (祭祖) of the deceased. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Master-Bondservant Relationships under Christ’s Lordship | 6 | 6:5-9 | Medium | 肉身的主人 requires historical-slavery background, never dilutes exclusive divine 主; 偏待人 productively contrasts with guanxi favoritism (关系). | Native speaker review |

Part C — Chapters Explicitly Reviewed with No New Doctrinal Material
Per the full-book coverage mandate: every chapter of Ephesians (1–6) has been reviewed above and contributes at least one doctrine from the registry. No chapter or major section was found to be doctrinally inert; the entire book is treated as load-bearing. Sub-sections without independent doctrinal weight (e.g., 6:21-24 closing personal greetings) are explicitly noted as reviewed and folded into the adjacent doctrine (Grace, Thanksgiving) rather than omitted.
This document extends baseline Romans 11_doctrine_analysis.md methodology. Cross-reference assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Ephesians) for the authoritative machine-readable registry and analysis/08_core_glossary.md for term-level detail.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Salvation by Grace through Faith
Mandarin name: 因信蒙恩得救
Key terms: grace, faith, salvation, gift, dead in trespasses, made alive
Review routing: Human theologian
The core-passage thesis. 恩典 must never be assimilated to 功德 (Buddhist accumulated merit) or 阴德 (hidden merit accruing to descendants); 所赐的 (gift) in 2:8 is the sharpest available verse for reinforcing the grace-versus-merit contrast in the whole curriculum. Must render identically wherever 2:8-9 is quoted elsewhere in the curriculum, mirroring the baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 consistency rule.
Grace Versus Works
Mandarin name: 恩典与行为的对立
Key terms: works, good works, boast, workmanship
Review routing: Human theologian
行为 (works, 2:9) and 善行 (good works, 2:10) sit on opposite sides of the same causal arrow that 积善 (‘accumulating goodness,’ a stock Chinese folk-moral phrase describing merit that produces fortune or salvation) inverts. Every occurrence of 善行 in this context requires an explicit translator note reversing the folk-merit causal direction: works are salvation’s fruit, never its cause.
Election and Predestination in Christ
Mandarin name: 在基督里的拣选与预定
Key terms: chosen, predestined, purpose, prepared beforehand, in him
Review routing: Human theologian
预定 must never be assimilated to 天命所归 (the classical political-legitimacy phrase for an impersonally-mandated ruler) or 命中注定/缘分 (fatalistic destiny or folk-Buddhist predestined connection). Ephesians grounds every election/predestination statement explicitly ‘in Christ’ or ‘in him’ (1:4-5), a personal, relational, Christ-centered choice — never a cosmic lottery or entitlement bestowed on the worthy.
Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Mandarin name: 犹太人与外邦人合而为一的新人类
Key terms: dividing wall, one new man, reconcile, access, no longer strangers
Review routing: Human theologian
新人 (2:15) must be taught as a genuinely new corporate creation, a third category alongside neither ‘Jew’ nor ‘Gentile’ as before — not a renewed version of an old identity. This doctrine also directly resists any framing echoing the classical Hua-Yi (华夷) civilized-insider/outsider distinction that 外邦人 could otherwise import if handled carelessly. 和好 (reconcile) must not be reduced to Confucian ritual-propriety (礼) social harmonization.
Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Mandarin name: 属灵的争战与神的军装
Key terms: armor of God, devil, rulers and authorities, cosmic powers, schemes
Review routing: Human theologian
魔鬼 must be identified as the one singular personal chief adversary, never conflated with the diffuse folk-religious category of generic ghosts and spirits (鬼, 饿鬼). 管辖这黑暗世界的 (cosmic powers, 6:12) and 执政的、掌权的 (rulers/authorities, 1:21) must be taught as illegitimate, defeated spiritual enemies to resist through Christ’s armor — never as the legitimate-seeming territorial or functional deities of the Chinese folk pantheon (城隍, 土地公, 玉皇大帝) to be respected or appeased. The armor itself must never be confused with martial-arts cultivated power (武功修炼) or protective amulets (护身符).
Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Mandarin name: 以基督为中心的家庭伦理
Key terms: submit, head, love your wives, honor parents, bondservants and masters
Review routing: Human theologian
顺服 engages directly with the Confucian Three Cardinal Guides (三纲, especially 夫为妻纲) and contemporary sensitivities around gender equality; teaching must foreground mutual submission (5:21) and Christ’s self-sacrificial headship-love (5:25) as the frame limiting all household authority, distinct from the one-directional, non-reciprocal 三纲 hierarchy. 孝敬父母 (6:2) carries strong positive cultural resonance with 孝 but must be anchored ‘in the Lord’ rather than treated as an autonomous Confucian filial duty, and kept distinct from ancestor veneration (祭祖).
Deity and Lordship of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的神性与主权
Key terms: far above all rule and authority, head over all things, one Lord, Savior
Review routing: Human theologian
主 must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship over the church and every cosmic power (1:21-22), never softened to 主人 (ordinary master) or 老爷 (feudal honorific). Christ’s exaltation ‘far above’ the ranked spiritual powers (1:21) must not be diluted to ‘an especially exalted spiritual being’ comparable to entries in the Chinese folk celestial bureaucracy.
Sanctification and Holiness
Mandarin name: 成圣与圣洁
Key terms: holy and blameless, grow into a holy temple, washing of water with the word, holy and without blemish
Review routing: Human theologian
Any use of 成圣 vocabulary in this curriculum must reuse the baseline Critical caution exactly: 成圣 is a direct borrowing of the Neo-Confucian technical term for self-cultivation into sagehood through personal moral effort (Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming). Ephesians 5:26-27 grounds the church’s holiness in Christ’s own cleansing action through his word, not in self-performed ritual washing (洁净仪式) or self-directed moral perfection.
Idolatry and Covetousness
Mandarin name: 贪心就是拜偶像
Key terms: covetous, idolater, no inheritance in the kingdom
Review routing: Human theologian
拜偶像的 directly names widespread family and cultural practices in Chinese society — bowing before deity statues, Buddha images, or ancestral tablets. Because learners or their families may currently participate in such practices, teaching requires deliberate pastoral framing distinguishing the theological point (covetousness as misplaced ultimate allegiance) from a blanket, shaming condemnation of family religious customs. Requires explicit pastoral-sensitivity notes alongside doctrinal-accuracy review.
Spiritual Authorities and Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ
Mandarin name: 服在基督之下的属灵权势
Key terms: rulers and authorities, cosmic powers, prince of the power of the air, far above every rule
Review routing: Human theologian
This cluster of powers-language must never be assimilated to the legitimate-seeming territorial and functional deities of the Chinese folk pantheon (城隍 city gods, 土地公 local earth gods, the celestial bureaucracy under 玉皇大帝), who are commonly regarded as appropriate objects of local respect or ritual appeasement. Ephesians presents these powers as real, personal, illegitimate, and subject to Christ’s supremacy — enemies to resist, never beings to negotiate with or appease.
High Risk Doctrines
The Church as the Body of Christ
Mandarin name: 教会为基督的身体
Key terms: body, head, fullness, one body, grow into a holy temple
Review routing: Human theologian
身体 must be taught as organic spiritual union in Christ, not merely a social or corporate-organizational metaphor; 元首/头 (head) must be taught as self-sacrificial, life-giving headship (5:25), not the unilateral authority of the Confucian Three Cardinal Guides. 殿 (temple, 2:21) must never be rendered 庙/寺/道观.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Mandarin name: 基督的奥秘被显明
Key terms: mystery, revelation, made known, stewardship, great mystery (marriage)
Review routing: Human theologian
奥秘 must be taught as a truth formerly hidden but now openly and publicly disclosed to all believers through apostolic preaching — never an esoteric secret reserved for spiritual elites, as in Daoist inner-alchemy secret transmission (秘传) or occult/geomantic esoterica (玄机). The marriage application (5:32) must be distinguished from Daoist yin-yang cosmic-marriage symbolism (陰陽和合).
Walking in Newness of Life
Mandarin name: 行事为人活出新生命
Key terms: walk, old self, new self, renewed, put off / put on, children of light
Review routing: Human theologian
旧人/新人 (old self/new self, 4:22-24) must be taught as a decisive, once-for-all break at conversion followed by ongoing Spirit-wrought renewal (更新) — not the gradual, self-effort model of Neo-Confucian self-cultivation (修身) nor a meditative technique such as 打坐/修心. 行 (walk) must be distinguished from meritorious ritual practice such as pilgrimage-walking (朝圣).
Sonship and Adoption into God’s Family
Mandarin name: 在神家中得儿子的名分
Key terms: adoption, predestined for adoption, inheritance, access to the Father
Review routing: Human theologian
儿子的名分 must be taught as full relational sonship with complete inheritance rights, never the instrumental Chinese practice of 过继 (transferring an heir within a clan primarily to continue ancestor-worship rites and property lines). 基业 (inheritance) must likewise be distinguished from ordinary clan-inheritance customs.
Universal Human Depravity Prior to Grace
Mandarin name: 全人类在蒙恩之前的败坏
Key terms: dead in trespasses and sins, sons of disobedience, by nature children of wrath
Review routing: Human theologian
本性 (‘by nature,’ 2:3) directly confronts the mainstream Confucian anthropological assumption of inherent human goodness (性善, Mencius’ 性善论), one of the most deeply held convictions in Chinese moral culture. Teaching must state plainly that Ephesians affirms humanity’s inborn condition under judgment apart from grace, without denying common human dignity grounded in being made in God’s image (1:4).
Divine Calling
Mandarin name: 神的呼召
Key terms: called, calling, hope of his calling, walk worthy of the calling
Review routing: Human theologian
呼召 must be kept distinct from 天命 (Mandate of Heaven), the classical Chinese concept of an impersonal cosmic mandate legitimizing a ruler or destiny. God’s call in Ephesians is a personal, relational summons to hope and to a manner of life, not a cosmic entitlement.
Reconciliation and Peace with God
Mandarin name: 与神和好并得平安
Key terms: peace, reconcile, one body, access to the Father, blood of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
和好 (reconcile) must not be reduced to Confucian ritual-propriety-restored social harmony (礼); 平安 (peace, 2:14, 17) must be distinguished from the everyday folk-amulet sense of peace as general good-fortune/safety. 基督的血 must never be assimilated to Chinese ritual blood-oath bonding (歃血为盟).
Inheritance and Assurance of Salvation
Mandarin name: 基业的确据
Key terms: sealed with the Spirit, guarantee, inheritance, day of redemption
Review routing: Human theologian
印记 (sealed) must be distinguished from Daoist/folk-religious talismans (符) consecrated for magical protection — the Spirit’s seal is God’s own ownership-mark and covenant guarantee, not a protective charm applied by ritual technique. 凭据 (guarantee) is God’s pledge to the believer, not something the believer produces.
Marriage as a Type of Christ and the Church
Mandarin name: 婚姻是基督与教会的预表
Key terms: husbands love your wives, head, Savior, great mystery, one flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
元首 (head) applied to the husband must be bounded by Christ’s self-sacrificial love (5:25) and not collapse into the unilateral Confucian 夫为妻纲 authority structure. 奥秘 applied to marriage (5:32) must be presented as a specific redemptive-typological picture, not an abstract cosmic yin-yang complementarity principle (陰陽和合).
Parent-Child Relationships in the Lord
Mandarin name: 在主里的父母儿女关系
Key terms: obey your parents in the Lord, honor your father and mother, discipline and instruction of the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
孝敬父母 carries strong positive resonance with 孝 (filial piety), one of Chinese culture’s most deeply rooted values; teaching must both affirm this resonance and clarify the Christ-centered motivation (‘in the Lord’) as distinct from filial duty as an autonomous virtue, and must keep honoring living parents distinct from ancestor veneration (祭祖) of the deceased, which this text does not address.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Gifts for Building Up the Church
Mandarin name: 为建立教会所赐的恩赐
Key terms: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, equipping, grace given to each
Review routing: Native speaker review
The fivefold office terms (使徒, 先知, 传福音的, 牧师/牧人, 教师) are established, low-collision Chinese Christian vocabulary; the main risk is disambiguating 执事 (minister, 3:7) from a Buddhist/Daoist temple caretaker (庙中执事) rather than any deep syncretism risk. 装备 (equipping) usefully carries a military-equipment connotation that reinforces rather than conflicts with the armor imagery of chapter 6.
Prayer and Access to God
Mandarin name: 祷告与到神面前的通路
Key terms: access, boldness, intercession, pray in the Spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
可以进到…面前 (access) must be taught as direct, unmediated approach to God through Christ and the Spirit, contrasted with the need for ritual intermediaries (mediums, 灵媒) common in Chinese folk religious practice for approaching the divine or ancestral realm.
Master-Bondservant Relationships under Christ’s Lordship
Mandarin name: 在基督主权下的主仆关系
Key terms: bondservants, masters according to the flesh, no partiality with God
Review routing: Native speaker review
肉身的主人 (earthly master) requires historical-background teaching distinguishing ancient slavery from modern employment, and must never dilute or be confused with the exclusive divine 主 (Lord) title reserved for Christ. 偏待人 (partiality) productively contrasts with guanxi-based favoritism (关系) in contemporary practice.
Mutual Edification and Unity of the Spirit
Mandarin name: 彼此建立与圣灵所赐的合一
Key terms: build one another up, unity of the Spirit, bond of peace, speak the truth in love
Review routing: Native speaker review
圣灵所赐的合一 must be distinguished from the broader social harmony ideal (和谐, 和为贵) achieved through mutual accommodation — biblical unity is grounded in a shared, Spirit-given identity in Christ prior to and independent of successful social harmonization, though the risk of collapsing the two in ordinary usage is only moderate.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving and Praise
Mandarin name: 感恩与颂赞
Key terms: blessed be God, give thanks always, singing and making melody
Review routing: Automated review
感恩 is standard vocabulary with minor risk of generic secular gratitude untethered to God specifically; 福气 (blessing, 1:3) requires clarification against folk fortune-language but the doctrine’s overall translation risk remains low.
Apostolic and Prophetic Foundation of the Church
Mandarin name: 使徒和先知的根基
Key terms: apostles and prophets, built on the foundation, cornerstone
Review routing: Automated review
使徒 and 先知 are established, low-collision Chinese Christian terms; minor risk only of 使徒 being loosely conflated with a martial-arts or Daoist-master lineage figure (宗师) if paraphrased casually.
