Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 3 John
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the 3 John curriculum, required by PRD Phase 1 Step 5. It is doctrine-consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same nine doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. Where the registry gives the risk tier and a short mandarin_risk_notes field, this document expands each doctrine with the specific translation risk (the concrete way a Mandarin rendering could misfire) to guide Phase 2 reviewers and Step 16-17 routing decisions.
Full-Book Coverage Statement (PRD Mandate)
3 John consists of a single chapter of fourteen verses (3 John 1:1–14). This chapter is coextensive with the core passage specified in the curriculum parameters. There is therefore no additional chapter or section of the book lying outside the core passage’s scope — the entire book has been reviewed for doctrinal and terminological content, and no verse has been silently omitted. The verse-by-verse doctrinal coverage below accounts for every verse in the book:
| Verse | Doctrinal content present | Covered under doctrine(s) |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Salutation; elder’s authority; truth as governing reality | Church Leadership and Pride; Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:2 | Prayer for holistic well-being (body and soul) | Prayer for Holistic Well-Being |
| 1:3 | Testimony to Gaius’s walking in truth | Christian Witness and Testimony; Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:4 | Spiritual fatherhood, pastoral joy | Spiritual Fatherhood and Pastoral Joy |
| 1:5 | Faithful hospitality to strangers/traveling ministers | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers |
| 1:6 | Church testimony to Gaius’s love; sending on worthily of God | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Christian Witness and Testimony; Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:7 | Going out “for the sake of the Name,” declining support from outsiders | The Name of Christ and Gospel Mission; Hospitality to Traveling Ministers |
| 1:8 | Obligation to support; becoming fellow workers with the truth | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:9 | Diotrephes’ refusal to acknowledge the elder’s authority | Church Leadership and Pride |
| 1:10 | Diotrephes’ love of preeminence, slander, obstruction, expulsion | Church Leadership and Pride |
| 1:11 | Exhortation to imitate good, not evil | Imitating Good rather than Evil |
| 1:12 | Threefold commendation of Demetrius | Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius); Christian Witness and Testimony |
| 1:13 | Material/epistolary closing (pen and ink) | No doctrinal content; material culture only (see 08_core_glossary.md §C) |
| 1:14 | Hope of a face-to-face visit; peace; friends greeting friends | Truth and Christian Fellowship |
No chapter beyond Chapter 1 exists in this book; this table constitutes full-book coverage per the PRD mandate.
Doctrine Matrix
1. Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8 |
| Risk Level | High |
| Translation Risk | 接待 (jiēdài) is the ordinary Chinese word for hosting any guest — a client, a government delegation, a tourist — and carries no inherent gospel-partnership content. 客旅 (kèlǚ) can likewise be misread as an ordinary traveler or a generic object of charity. The compounding risk is that Chinese rénqíng (人情) culture treats hospitality as a reciprocal-favor transaction that obligates a future return; 3 John’s hospitality is unilateral gospel partnership “for the sake of the Name” (v.7), not favor-banking. A flattened translation could either (a) reduce the passage to generic etiquette advice, or (b) accidentally reinforce a merit/reciprocity framing the text does not intend. |

2. Imitating Good rather than Evil
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:11 |
| Risk Level | High |
| Translation Risk | 效法 (xiàofǎ) is saturated with Confucian self-cultivation connotations (“效法先贤” — modeling oneself after the sages as a moral-improvement program). 善/恶 (good/evil) sit inside the folk-Buddhist karma proverb “善有善报,恶有恶报” and Mencius’s innate-goodness doctrine (性善论). A literal rendering risks being heard as: emulate good conduct in order to accumulate merit or actualize an already-good nature. The verse’s actual logic is diagnostic, not instrumental — doing good is evidence of an existing relationship with God (“is of God”), not a technique for producing one. |

3. Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:1, 1:9, 1:10 |
| Risk Level | High |
| Translation Risk | 长老 (zhǎnglǎo) collides with the Buddhist monastic-seniority title and the secular/Confucian clan-elder gerontocracy (authority by age and lineage rather than entrusted spiritual office). 好为首 (hào wéishǒu) must be taught as illegitimate status-craving, a warning especially salient given Chinese hierarchical face-culture (面子文化) and the Confucian ethic of proper rank-ordering (长幼有序). 赶出教会 (gǎnchū jiàohuì) risks conflation with lineage expulsion from the clan register (出族), a socially severe act with ancestor-ritual consequences; the text condemns Diotrephes’ abuse of discipline for personal pride, not church discipline as such. |

4. Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:12 |
| Risk Level | Medium |
| Translation Risk | 见证 (jiànzhèng) carries secular legal-witness connotations and, in contemporary usage, the promotional “testimonial” register of endorsement marketing or new-religious-movement efficacy claims. The threefold witness to Demetrius (from others, from the truth itself, and from the elder) must read as verified, truthful eyewitness confirmation of consistent Christian character — not a subjective impression or an advertisement-style endorsement. |

5. Truth and Christian Fellowship
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:1, 1:3, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 1:12, 1:14 |
| Risk Level | High |
| Translation Risk | 真理 (zhēnlǐ) risks two distinct collisions: (1) Buddhist usage for metaphysical/ultimate truth attained through practice; (2) the 20th-century Chinese political-ideological sense of “truth” as Party-verified objective doctrine (echoing the well-known slogan “practice is the sole criterion of truth,” 实践是检验真理的唯一标准). Neither sense is in view; ἀλήθεια in 3 John is the personal, revealed reality of Christ governing conduct and relationship. Separately, the letter’s shift from family language (兄弟) to friendship language (朋友) for the same fellowship (v.14) must not be rendered so as to imply a status gradation between “brothers” and “friends,” nor should 兄弟 be read through the lens of ritualized sworn-brotherhood bonds (结拜). |

6. The Name of Christ and Gospel Mission
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:7 |
| Risk Level | Critical |
| Translation Risk | ”The Name” (τὸ ὄνομα) is a Christological title-metonym for Christ’s own person and authority, structurally parallel to the baseline’s Critical treatment of 主 (Lord) and 神的儿子 (Son of God). Any rendering that generalizes it to “reputation,” “the cause,” “the ministry,” or “the movement” strips a personal Christological confession down to an institutional-loyalty statement — the exact category of error the baseline forbids for 主 and 神的儿子. This is the single Critical-tier doctrine in the book and must be flagged on every occurrence. |
| Review Routing | Human theologian |
7. Spiritual Fatherhood and Pastoral Joy
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:4 |
| Risk Level | Low |
| Translation Risk | 儿女 (érnǚ) could be read as literal biological offspring or (worse) drawn toward clan-heir/ancestor-line categories (cf. baseline’s 过继 caution under adoption) rather than as spiritual children nurtured through gospel ministry. The risk is a minor category confusion, not a doctrinal collision on the scale of Critical/High items. |
| Review Routing | Automated review |
8. Prayer for Holistic Well-Being
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:2 |
| Risk Level | High |
| Translation Risk | 灵魂 (línghún) in Chinese folk religion denotes a detachable soul-substance vulnerable to loss, wandering, or ritual capture (cf. 收魂/丢魂 rites and the 三魂七魄 multi-soul cosmology) — a very different picture from the whole, unitary inward spiritual condition of a believer in view here. Additionally, the verse’s rhetorical structure (praying for outward prospering “even as” the soul prospers) is vulnerable to a prosperity-gospel misreading that guarantees material blessing in direct proportion to spiritual devotion — a reading the translation must not invite. |
| Review Routing | Human theologian |
9. Christian Witness and Testimony
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Supporting passages (3 John) | 3 John 1:3, 1:6, 1:12 |
| Risk Level | Medium |
| Translation Risk | 见证 must denote consistent, verified eyewitness testimony to observable Christian character across all three occurrences (traveling brothers testifying of Gaius; the church testifying of Gaius’s love; the threefold testimony for Demetrius) rather than a subjective personal impression or a secular/legal or promotional-marketing register borrowed from unrelated contexts. |

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Name of Christ and Gospel Mission
Mandarin name: 为主的名而出去传道
Key terms: name_of_christ, strangers, pagans_outsiders
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘the Name’ is a Christological title-metonym for Christ’s own person and authority, directly paralleling the baseline’s Critical treatment of 主 (Lord) and 神的儿子 (Son of God). Rendering it as a generic reference to ‘reputation,’ ‘the cause,’ or ‘the movement’ would strip the term of its personal divine referent, reducing a Christological confession into an institutional-loyalty statement — the same category of error the baseline forbids for 主 and 神的儿子.
High Risk Doctrines
Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Mandarin name: 接待巡行的传道人
Key terms: strangers, receive_support, welcome_accept, send_on_journey, fellow_worker, name_of_christ, pagans_outsiders, obligation
Review routing: Human theologian
接待 is extremely common in secular Chinese for hosting any guest, client, or visitor, and 客旅 risks being read as an ordinary traveler or generic charity recipient. Must be taught as active gospel partnership under Christ’s own Name (v.7) that makes the host ‘a fellow worker with the truth’ (v.8) — not mere social courtesy or the reciprocal-favor expectation of Chinese guanxi/人情 culture, which presumes an eventual return obligation the text does not intend.
Imitating Good rather than Evil
Mandarin name: 效法良善,不效法邪恶
Key terms: imitate, good_doing_good, evil_doing_evil
Review routing: Human theologian
效法 carries strong Confucian self-cultivation connotations (‘效法先贤,见贤思齐’), and 善/恶 sit at the center of the folk-Buddhist karma-retribution proverb ‘善有善报,恶有恶报’ and Mencian innate-goodness doctrine (性善论). Must be taught as observable conduct that gives evidence of an already-existing relationship with God (‘is of God’ / ‘has not seen God’), not a merit-earning act, a karma-ledger entry, or a self-cultivation technique that itself produces standing before God.
Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Mandarin name: 教会领导权与骄傲(丢特腓)
Key terms: elder, love_of_preeminence, welcome_accept, cast_out, slander, hinder
Review routing: Human theologian
长老 collides with the Buddhist monastic-seniority title and Confucian clan-elder gerontocracy, risking a reading of authority based on age/lineage rather than entrusted spiritual office. 好为首 must be taught as illegitimate status-craving distinct from legitimate church order, a warning especially salient in a culture with strong hierarchical face and rank-consciousness (面子文化, 长幼有序). 赶出教会 risks conflation with clan-lineage expulsion (出族), which carries ancestral-ritual consequences foreign to legitimate NT church discipline; the text condemns Diotrephes’ abuse of authority, not the existence of church discipline itself.
Truth and Christian Fellowship
Mandarin name: 真理与基督徒的团契
Key terms: truth, love, brothers, friends, peace
Review routing: Human theologian
真理 risks collision with Buddhist ultimate-truth usage and with 20th-century Chinese political-ideological ‘objective truth’ rhetoric (e.g., ‘practice is the sole criterion of truth’); must be taught as the personal, revealed reality of Christ governing conduct and relationships, not abstract philosophy or Party-verified doctrine. The letter’s shift from 兄弟 (family language) to 朋友 (friendship language) for the same fellowship must be taught as equal, non-hierarchical Christian kinship, avoiding both the ritualized sworn-brotherhood associations of 结拜 and any implied status gradation between ‘family’ and ‘friend’ members.
Prayer for Holistic Well-Being
Mandarin name: 为全人健康祷告
Key terms: soul
Review routing: Human theologian
灵魂 in Chinese folk religion denotes a detachable soul-substance vulnerable to loss, wandering, or capture (cf. 收魂/丢魂 rituals and the multiple-soul 三魂七魄 cosmology). Must be taught as the whole inward spiritual condition of a believer flourishing before God, not a semi-physical soul-essence subject to ritual manipulation; additionally, the verse’s ordering — physical prospering measured against the soul’s prospering — must not be read as a prosperity-gospel formula guaranteeing material blessing in proportion to spiritual devotion.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Mandarin name: 称许忠心见证人(低米丢)
Key terms: testimony, truth, faithful_conduct
Review routing: Native speaker review
见证 is used broadly in secular legal contexts and in contemporary promotional or new-religious-movement ‘testimonial’ rhetoric. Must be anchored as verified, truthful eyewitness testimony to Demetrius’s Christian character consistent with 真理 itself, not a marketing endorsement or a subjective personal impression.
Christian Witness and Testimony
Mandarin name: 基督徒的见证
Key terms: testimony, truth, brothers
Review routing: Native speaker review
见证 must consistently denote verified, truthful eyewitness testimony to observable Christian character and conduct across all three occurrences in the letter (traveling brothers testifying of Gaius, the church testifying of Gaius’s love, and the threefold testimony for Demetrius), not a subjective personal impression or a promotional/marketing-style claim as the term can carry in secular or new-religious-movement usage.
Low Risk Doctrines
Spiritual Fatherhood and Pastoral Joy
Mandarin name: 属灵的父子情与牧者的喜乐
Key terms: spiritual_children, joy, beloved
Review routing: Automated review
儿女 must be distinguished from biological offspring or clan-heir language (cf. baseline’s 过继 caution under adoption); minor risk that the term is read as a literal descendant relationship rather than pastoral-spiritual nurture through gospel ministry. Overall doctrinal content is low-collision.
