09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John
Methodology
This analysis fulfills PRD Phase 1 Step 3 for the John curriculum: a full cross-reference matrix of every Old Testament quotation and allusion across all 21 chapters of John, a messianic-reference summary, a typological correspondence table, a parallel-mapping to the Romans curriculum already anchored in the baseline Language Package, and a set of rendering-consistency rules governing any quotation shared between the two curricula.
Full-book coverage rule: every chapter of John is reviewed. Chapters with no direct OT quotation or allusion beyond material already treated are noted explicitly as reviewed, never silently omitted.
Baseline reuse rule: all Mandarin renderings of terms already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json (神, 耶稣, 主, 神的儿子, 基督, 圣灵, 义, 律法, 罪, 复活, 荣耀, 恩典, 以色列, 大卫, 先知, 约) are reused exactly. New OT-quotation-specific renderings proposed here follow CUV (和合本, 神版) wherever the CUV text is the established rendering.
Citation Normalization Standard
All citations in this document and downstream artifacts use the form BookName chapter:verse, English book names, Arabic numerals, no leading zeros, hyphenated ranges (John 3:1-21), comma-separated discontinuous verses (John 12:38, 40). This mirrors the baseline’s citation convention and remains normalizable for automated lookup regardless of destination-language citation formatting rules applied downstream (per baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, Mandarin-facing output uses 罗马书/约翰福音-style citations; this internal analysis document retains English-book-name citations for cross-reference tooling).
OT book name Mandarin mapping required for this curriculum (extending the baseline’s Romans-only book list):
| English | Mandarin (CUV) |
|---|
| Genesis | 创世记 |
| Exodus | 出埃及记 |
| Leviticus | 利未记 |
| Numbers | 民数记 |
| Deuteronomy | 申命记 |
| 2 Samuel | 撒母耳记下 |
| Psalms | 诗篇 |
| Isaiah | 以赛亚书 |
| Ezekiel | 以西结书 |
| Daniel | 但以理书 |
| Micah | 弥迦书 |
| Zechariah | 撒迦利亚书 |
| John | 约翰福音 |
Part A — OT Quotation and Allusion Cross-Reference Matrix (Chapter by Chapter)
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | the Logos (Christ) | Allusion to Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning…”); echoes the creation account’s opening to assert the Word’s pre-temporal existence “with God.” | Must retain the deliberate echo of Genesis 1:1’s opening formula (创世记1:1 “起初”); teaching should make the parallel explicit since 起初 alone does not automatically recall Genesis for a reader without OT literacy. |
| John 1:14 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Incarnation | the Word | Allusion to Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 (God’s glory filling the tabernacle, God “dwelling” among Israel). | 住 (“dwelt,” CUV “住在我们中间”) must be taught with its tabernacle background so readers grasp permanent divine presence, not a generic “stayed for a while.” Ties to baseline’s Critical 道成肉身 note. |
| John 1:17 | Law and Grace | Moses; Jesus Christ | Background: the Mosaic Law given at Sinai (Exodus 20 and following); contrasted with grace and truth “through Jesus Christ.” | Reuse baseline 律法/恩典 exactly; this verse is John’s own law/grace contrast parallel to Romans 6:14, 10:4 — see Part D. |
| John 1:19-23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | John the Baptist | Direct quotation: Isaiah 40:3, “the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” | Reuse CUV Isaiah 40:3 wording exactly for the quotation; distinguish John the Baptist’s role as forerunner-witness (见证) from a fortune-teller/oracle figure (cf. baseline 先知/预言 notes). |
| John 1:29, 36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | John the Baptist; Jesus (Lamb of God) | Typological allusion to the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:3-13), the Isaac-substitute ram (Genesis 22:8,13), and the Suffering Servant “led like a lamb” (Isaiah 53:7). | 神的羔羊 must be taught against Chinese folk sacrificial-animal-offering ritual (appeasement offerings to deities/ancestors); this is a unique, once-for-all substitutionary sacrifice, not a repeatable propitiation rite. |
| John 1:45 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Philip; Nathanael; Moses; the prophets | General allusion: “Philip found Nathanael and said… ‘We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and also the prophets.’” | No single verse to anchor; teaching should supply representative texts (Deuteronomy 18:15; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; Micah 5:2) rather than leave the claim unanchored. |
| John 1:51 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Son of Man | Jesus; Jacob (implied) | Allusion to Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder — angels ascending/descending); Christ as the Son of Man now identified as the true meeting-point of heaven and earth. | 人子 (Son of Man) needs explicit Genesis 28 + Daniel 7:13-14 background; no intrinsic Mandarin collision risk, but zero self-evident meaning without teaching. |
Chapter 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 2:17 | Christ-Centered Ministry; Zeal for God’s House | Jesus; the disciples | Direct quotation: Psalm 69:9, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” | Reuse CUV Psalm 69:9 wording; Psalm 69 recurs later at John 15:25 and 19:28-29 — flag as a recurring Psalm across the Passion narrative requiring consistent rendering. |
| John 2:19-21 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Jesus | Typological reinterpretation: the Jerusalem Temple (cf. Exodus 25-40; 1 Kings 8) is fulfilled/replaced by Christ’s own body as the locus of God’s presence. | 殿/圣殿 must be distinguished from baseline’s 教会 (church) note; here it correctly names the historical Jerusalem Temple, with Christ’s body as its typological fulfillment — a distinct nuance not present in the Romans baseline. |
Chapter 3 (Core Passage)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 3:5 | New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Jesus; Nicodemus | Background allusion: Ezekiel 36:25-27 (cleansing water + new spirit/heart) and Isaiah 44:3 (pouring out the Spirit). | 水和圣灵 must be taught with this OT background so the New Birth is seen as covenant-promise fulfillment, not an isolated NT novelty; also flagged High for collision with Daoist talisman-water (符水) per baseline semantic analysis. |
| John 3:14 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Judgment and Belief | Jesus; Moses (implied); the Israelites | Direct typological reference: Numbers 21:4-9, the bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness for healing. | 蛇/举起来 must retain the healing-by-looking-in-faith typology; this is the explicit OT anchor for the ὑψόω (“lifted up”) wordplay recurring at John 8:28; 12:32,34 — see Part C. |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World; Messianic Promise | God the Father; the Son | Thematic convergence of Genesis 22 (God provides/gives his own son), Isaiah 9:6 (“a son is given”), and the whole OT sacrificial-substitution pattern. | No single-verse OT quotation, but the “giving” language (ἔδωκεν) deliberately echoes the sacrificial-gift pattern; teaching should not treat 3:16 as OT-disconnected. |
(John 3:1-21 receives its full term-level treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md; this table supplements that analysis with the passage’s specific OT connections.)
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 4:5-6 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (background) | the Samaritan woman; Jacob (implied) | Allusion to Genesis 33:19 and 48:22 — the plot of land Jacob gave to Joseph, site of “Jacob’s well.” | Low risk; background color for the Samaritan setting, not a doctrinal quotation. |
| John 4:20-24 | Worship in Spirit and Truth | the Samaritan woman; Jesus | Background: the Samaritan-Jewish dispute over the legitimate worship site (cf. Deuteronomy 27:4 [Samaritan Pentateuch variant, Mount Gerizim] vs. 2 Chronicles 3:1, Mount Zion). | 敬拜 must be taught as relocated from any fixed sacred geography (per baseline note); avoid implying either mountain retains ritual significance under the new covenant. |
| John 4:25-26 | Messianic Promise | the Samaritan woman; Jesus | General messianic-expectation background (shared Jewish-Samaritan hope in a coming Messiah/Prophet, cf. Deuteronomy 18:15-18). | 基督/弥赛亚 — reuse baseline 基督 exactly; note this is one of Jesus’s most direct self-disclosures of messianic identity in the Gospel. |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 5:39, 45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Inspiration of Scripture | Jesus; Moses | Allusion to Deuteronomy 18:15 (the promised prophet like Moses) and the whole Mosaic corpus (“if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me”). | 摩西/经上 (Scripture) must be distinguished from the Confucian classical canon (经, jīng) per baseline Inspiration of Scripture doctrine note; Moses’s writings are treated as personally, verbally testifying to Christ. |
| John 5:46 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Moses | Same as above — direct claim that the Torah’s own authorial intent points to Christ. | Same note as above. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 6:4 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typological background) | narrator | Background: the Passover feast (Exodus 12) frames the Bread of Life discourse. | Low-Medium; supports the manna/Passover typology developed through the chapter. |
| John 6:31 | Eternal Life through Faith; Bread of Life | the crowd; Moses (implied) | Direct quotation (crowd’s citation): Exodus 16:4 / Psalm 78:24, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” | Must retain the crowd’s misapplication of the quotation (they cite it to demand a repeat miracle) versus Jesus’s correction that he himself, not manna, is the true bread — teaching must preserve this rhetorical reversal. |
| John 6:45 | New Birth; Effectual Calling | Jesus | Direct quotation: Isaiah 54:13, “And they will all be taught by God.” | Reuse CUV Isaiah 54:13 wording; ties the Spirit’s inward teaching to the effectual-drawing (ἑλκύω) doctrine of the same chapter (6:44). |
Chapter 7
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 7:22-23 | Law and Grace | Jesus; Moses | Allusion to Leviticus 12:3 and Genesis 17:10 (circumcision on the eighth day, performed even on the Sabbath). | Low-Medium; supports Jesus’s Sabbath-healing argument by appeal to existing Mosaic practice, not a doctrinal collision term. |
| John 7:38 | The Holy Spirit; Eternal Life | Jesus | Composite allusion: Isaiah 58:11; Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 (rivers/streams flowing from Jerusalem/the sanctuary in the age of restoration). | 活水的江河 must retain the explicit Spirit-identification given by the narrator (7:39); avoid a generic “spiritual vitality” gloss divorced from these specific restoration prophecies. |
| John 7:42 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | the crowd; David (implied) | Direct allusion: Micah 5:2 (Messiah from Bethlehem) and 2 Samuel 7:12 (Davidic descent), cited by the crowd as messianic criteria. | Reuse baseline 大卫/大卫的后裔 exactly; note the narrative irony that the crowd’s correct criteria are used to wrongly dismiss Jesus (due to incomplete information about his birthplace). |
Chapter 8
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 8:17 | Inspiration of Scripture (legal background) | Jesus | Direct allusion: Deuteronomy 19:15 (“the testimony of two witnesses is true”), applied by Jesus to his own testimony plus the Father’s. | Legal-forensic term 见证 (testimony) reused per baseline note at 3:11/5:31-39; low collision risk. |
| John 8:39-40, 56-58 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus; Abraham | Allusion to Genesis 12, 15, 17, 22 (the Abrahamic covenant narrative) and direct echo of Exodus 3:14 (the divine name, ἐγώ εἰμι/“I AM”). | Critical — 8:58’s “before Abraham was, I am” (还没有亚伯拉罕就有了我) requires a mandatory teaching note connecting it to Exodus 3:14, since the Mandarin surface text alone does not carry the divine-name echo (per 07_semantic_analysis.md, item 62). |
Chapter 9
Reviewed. No new direct OT quotation. Background allusions (Ezekiel 18:20 and Exodus 20:5, on inherited guilt, behind the disciples’ question in 9:2-3) reuse concepts already addressed under the Judgment/Sin doctrine notes (baseline 罪; ch. 3 κρίνω notes) rather than introducing new cross-reference material.
Chapter 10
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 10:1-18 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Good Shepherd (I Am) | Jesus | Typological fulfillment of Ezekiel 34:11-16, 23-24 (God himself shepherding his flock; the one shepherd, David’s heir) and Psalm 23; Psalm 78:70-72. | 好牧人 must retain the OT background of God’s own shepherding role now fulfilled personally in Christ, not merely a generic pastoral-care metaphor. |
| John 10:34-36 | Deity of Christ; Sonship of Christ | Jesus; the Jewish authorities | Direct quotation: Psalm 82:6, “I said, you are gods.” | This is a delicate a fortiori legal argument (if mere judges could be called “gods” by derived authority, how much more the one truly consecrated and sent by the Father); teaching must not let 神 in the quoted Psalm text be confused with the Critical baseline sense of 神 as the one true God — a rare case where the same Mandarin character must carry a clearly lesser, derivative sense within a single verse’s argument. |
Chapter 11
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 11:24-25 | Resurrection; Eternal Life | Martha; Jesus | Background: Daniel 12:2 (resurrection to everlasting life or shame) and Ezekiel 37:1-14 (the valley of dry bones, resurrection of Israel). | Reuse baseline 复活 exactly; teaching should connect Martha’s Danielic future-resurrection expectation to Jesus’s radical claim that he himself, present now, is “the resurrection and the life.” |
| John 11:49-52 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Caiaphas | Typological/ironic fulfillment: unwitting high-priestly “prophecy” fulfills the substitutionary pattern of Isaiah 53 and the Passover-lamb typology (ch. 1, 19). | See Part C typology table; teaching should highlight the narrative irony (hostile, self-interested statement becomes true prophecy). |
Chapter 12
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | the crowd; Jesus | Direct quotation: Psalm 118:25-26, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” | Reuse CUV wording exactly; “在主名来的” ties directly to baseline’s Critical 主 (Lord) term — the crowd’s shout already implicitly invokes divine-name language applied to Jesus. |
| John 12:14-15 | Messianic Promise | Jesus | Direct quotation: Zechariah 9:9, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” | The humble-king imagery (a colt, not a war-horse) must be retained; do not let 王 (king) here be softened toward a merely honorary or purely spiritual sense — it is a deliberate, if paradoxical, royal-messianic claim. |
| John 12:27-28 | Deity of Christ; Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Echoes Psalm 6:3; Psalm 42:5-6 (soul-trouble language) alongside the “hour” motif. | Medium — supports the ὑψόω paradox (glory through suffering) already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| John 12:34 | Messianic Promise; Deity of Christ | the crowd | General allusion: 2 Samuel 7:13,16; Psalm 89:36-37; Isaiah 9:7 (the eternal Davidic throne) behind the crowd’s claim “we have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever.” | Ties the crowd’s (confused) expectation of an eternal, non-dying Messiah-King to the Davidic covenant; teaching should clarify that Christ’s death and resurrection fulfill rather than contradict this eternality. |
| John 12:38 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Isaiah (quoted); the unbelieving crowd | Direct quotation: Isaiah 53:1, “Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” | Critical cross-curriculum consistency point — this exact verse is also quoted in Romans 10:16. See Part E rule below: the Mandarin rendering of Isaiah 53:1 must be identical in both the John and Romans curricula. |
| John 12:39-40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah (quoted); the unbelieving crowd | Direct quotation: Isaiah 6:10, “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart…” | High — must be taught as describing a judicial hardening consequent on persistent unbelief (per the κρίνω doctrine notes), not an arbitrary, capricious divine act nor impersonal fate (avoid any drift toward 命运/天意 framing per baseline providence caution). |
| John 12:41 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Isaiah | Direct connection: Isaiah 6:1 (“I saw the Lord… high and lifted up”), explicitly identified by John’s narrator as Isaiah seeing Christ’s glory. | High — a direct textual claim that the pre-incarnate Christ is the “Lord” (יהוה) Isaiah saw enthroned in the Temple vision; foundational Pre-existence/Deity-of-Christ prooftext requiring careful teaching, since it identifies Christ with the OT theophany of YHWH himself. |
Chapter 13
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 13:18 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (betrayal foretold) | Jesus; Judas | Direct quotation: Psalm 41:9, “He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.” | Reuse CUV Psalm 41:9 wording; part of the same recurring-Psalm-citation pattern noted at John 2:17, 15:25, 19:24, 19:28 — flag for consistent rendering across the Passion narrative. |
Chapter 14
Reviewed. No direct OT quotation. Background allusion: the promise of an inward, Spirit-given knowledge of God (Jeremiah 31:31-34, the new covenant “law written on the heart”; Ezekiel 36:26-27, “a new heart… a new spirit”) underlies the Paraclete promise (14:16-26) but is not textually quoted. Teaching material should supply this background to root the Holy Spirit as Counselor doctrine in covenant-promise fulfillment.
Chapter 15
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 15:1-8 | Christian Identity in Christ; I Am Statements | Jesus | Typological fulfillment/reversal: Israel as an unfruitful, wild vine (Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 19:10-14) — Christ is now the true vine. | See Part C typology table; teaching must note the deliberate reversal (Israel repeatedly failed as the vine; Christ succeeds as the true vine, and believers are fruitful only through union with him). |
| John 15:25 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus | Direct quotation: Psalm 35:19 / Psalm 69:4, “They hated me without a cause.” | Reuse CUV wording; part of the recurring-Psalm pattern (see 2:17, 13:18) — Psalm 69 in particular recurs three times across the Passion narrative (2:17; 15:25 background; 19:28-29) and should be rendered consistently. |
Chapter 16
Reviewed. No direct OT quotation. Background allusion: the sorrow-turned-to-joy motif (16:20-22) echoes Isaiah 26:17-19 and Isaiah 66:7-14 (childbirth imagery for eschatological reversal), but John does not quote these texts directly. Noted for teaching background only.
Chapter 17
Reviewed. No direct OT quotation. Typological background: the High Priestly Prayer as a whole is patterned on the OT high priest’s intercessory role (Exodus 28; Leviticus 16, the Day of Atonement), fulfilled uniquely by Christ as both priest and sacrifice. See Part C.
Chapter 18
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 18:9 | Providence; Fulfillment of Christ’s own word | Jesus; the disciples | Self-referential fulfillment (of Jesus’s own prior statement, 17:12), not a direct OT quotation — noted here to distinguish John’s practice of also treating Christ’s own words as fulfilled prophecy, extending the Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine beyond OT texts alone. | Low; a structural/literary note for teaching rather than a translation-risk item. |
| John 18:32 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | narrator | Similar self-referential fulfillment (of Jesus’s earlier statements about the manner of his death, e.g. 12:32-33). | Low; same note as above. |
Chapter 19
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 19:24 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | the soldiers | Direct quotation: Psalm 22:18, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” | Reuse CUV Psalm 22 wording; Psalm 22 is the single most extensively fulfilled psalm in the crucifixion narrative (cf. also v.28’s thirst) and should be flagged for teaching as a unified prophetic portrait, not isolated proof-texts. |
| John 19:28 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Humanity of Christ | Jesus | Allusion: Psalm 22:15 (“my tongue sticks to my jaws”) and Psalm 69:21 (“for my thirst they gave me sour wine”). | Medium; reinforces the Humanity of Christ doctrine (real physical suffering) alongside the Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine. |
| John 19:36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Typology | narrator | Direct quotation, composite: Exodus 12:46 / Numbers 9:12 (Passover lamb regulation, “you shall not break any of its bones”) and Psalm 34:20. | High — reinforces the Passover-Lamb typology established at John 1:29; must be rendered consistently with any parallel Passover-lamb teaching material, and must retain the typological force (Christ as the true, unbroken Passover Lamb), not merely a forensic detail. |
| John 19:37 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Second Coming (background) | narrator; the soldiers | Direct quotation: Zechariah 12:10, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” | High — Zechariah 12:10 in its OT context anticipates a future national mourning/repentance; John applies it to the crucifixion scene itself. Teaching should flag the (partial, inaugurated) nature of this fulfillment without collapsing the full eschatological horizon Zechariah anticipates. |
Chapter 20
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 20:9 | Resurrection of Christ; Fulfillment of Prophecy | the disciples (Peter, John) | General allusion: the disciples “did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead” — likely background includes Psalm 16:10 (later explicitly applied to Christ’s resurrection in Acts 2:25-31, Acts 13:35). | Medium — no verse is directly quoted here in John itself; teaching may supply Psalm 16:10 as the probable background text, cross-referencing its explicit NT use elsewhere, while noting John itself leaves the specific text unspecified. |
Chapter 21
Reviewed. No direct OT quotation or allusion. The chapter’s shepherd/sheep commissioning language (21:15-17) continues the Ezekiel 34 typology already established in chapter 10 (see Part C) rather than introducing new OT cross-reference material.
Part B — Messianic References Summary
| John Passage | Messianic Claim/Title | OT Root Text(s) | Doctrine Connection | Mandarin Rendering Note |
|---|
| John 1:1-18 | The Word, pre-existent and divine | Genesis 1:1; Proverbs 8:22-31 (Wisdom background, non-quoted); Isaiah 9:6 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | 道 — Critical, per baseline; never the impersonal Daoist Way. |
| John 1:29, 36 | Lamb of God | Genesis 22:8; Exodus 12:3-13; Isaiah 53:7 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 神的羔羊 — High, distinguish from folk sacrificial-offering ritual. |
| John 1:41, 45 | Messiah/Christ found | Deuteronomy 18:15; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; Micah 5:2 | Messianic Promise | 基督 — Critical, per baseline; never conflate with 弥勒. |
| John 4:25-26 | Messiah self-disclosed to a Samaritan | Deuteronomy 18:15-18 (shared Jewish-Samaritan hope) | Messianic Promise; Universal Scope of the Gospel | 基督 — same baseline note; reinforces cross-ethnic scope. |
| John 7:42 | Messiah from Bethlehem, seed of David | Micah 5:2; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Reuse baseline 大卫的后裔 exactly. |
| John 12:12-15 | Triumphal entry, humble king | Psalm 118:25-26; Zechariah 9:9 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Retain the paradox of royal dignity + humility (donkey, not war-horse). |
| John 12:34 | The eternal Davidic throne | 2 Samuel 7:13,16; Psalm 89:36-37; Isaiah 9:7 | Messianic Promise; Deity of Christ | Clarify death/resurrection fulfills, does not contradict, eternal kingship. |
| John 12:38, 41 | The Suffering Servant and the enthroned Lord, both identified with Jesus | Isaiah 53:1; Isaiah 6:1 | Messianic Promise; Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Isaiah 53:1 — Critical cross-curriculum consistency item; see Part E. |
| John 18:36-37 | Kingship not of this world | Daniel 7:13-14 (implicit, via Son of Man); Psalm 2:6-8 (background) | Kingdom of God; Lordship of Christ | Reuse baseline 神的国; distinguish from a rival political-territorial claim. |
| John 20:28 | ”My Lord and my God” — climactic confession | Psalm 45:6-7; Isaiah 9:6 (background divine-royal titles) | Deity of Christ; Lordship of Christ | 我的主,我的神 — Critical, reuse baseline 主/神 exactly, never softened. |
Note on the Maitreya collision (baseline Critical flag, reused here): every messianic-promise passage above must avoid any framing that suggests Christ is one of several anticipated future world-saviors (cf. 弥勒/Maitreya in Chinese Buddhist eschatology). John’s Gospel is structured entirely around a Messiah who has already come and whose identity is already confirmed by fulfilled Scripture, sign, and resurrection — the opposite temporal structure from Maitreya’s still-future appearing.
Part C — Typological Correspondences
| OT Type | OT Text(s) | John’s Fulfillment | Passage(s) | Translation/Teaching Note |
|---|
| The tabernacle (God dwelling among his people) | Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 | The incarnate Word “dwells” (σκηνόω, lit. “tabernacles”) among humanity | John 1:14 | Reinforces baseline Critical 道成肉身; the dwelling is permanent, not a temporary theophany. |
| The Passover lamb | Exodus 12:3-13, 46; Numbers 9:12 | The Lamb of God, whose bones are not broken | John 1:29, 36; 19:36 | 神的羔羊; typology spans the entire Gospel from the opening chapter to the crucifixion scene. |
| The bronze serpent | Numbers 21:4-9 | The Son of Man “lifted up” for those who look in faith to be healed/saved | John 3:14 | Anchors the ὑψόω wordplay (humiliation/exaltation paradox) recurring at 8:28; 12:32,34. |
| Manna from heaven | Exodus 16:4; Psalm 78:24 | Christ, the true Bread of Life | John 6:31-58 | 生命的粮; contrast manna (temporary, external) with Christ (permanent, received by faith, internalized). |
| Israel as an unfaithful vine | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15; 19:10-14 | Christ as the true vine; believers as fruitful branches only through union with him | John 15:1-8 | 真葡萄树; teach the deliberate reversal — Israel’s repeated failure as the vine is now succeeded by Christ’s fruitfulness. |
| God as Israel’s shepherd | Ezekiel 34:11-16, 23-24; Psalm 23; Psalm 78:70-72 | Christ the Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep | John 10:1-18; 21:15-17 | 好牧人; Peter’s commissioning in ch. 21 continues, under Christ’s authority, the same shepherding pattern. |
| The Jerusalem Temple | Exodus 25-40; 1 Kings 8 | Christ’s own body as the true temple, destroyed and raised | John 2:19-21 | 殿/圣殿, distinct nuance from baseline’s 教会 (church) note. |
| Jacob’s ladder (heaven-earth connection) | Genesis 28:12 | The Son of Man as the true meeting-point of heaven and earth | John 1:51 | 人子; requires explicit Genesis 28 background teaching. |
| The high priest’s atoning intercession | Exodus 28; Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement) | Christ as both interceding priest and self-offered sacrifice | John 17 (High Priestly Prayer); cf. 19 (crucifixion) | No single Mandarin term required; teach the dual priest-and-sacrifice role as a structural key to reading ch. 17 together with ch. 19. |
| Isaac, the beloved/only son offered by his father | Genesis 22:1-14 | God’s own giving of his “one and only Son” | John 3:16; 1:14, 18; 3:18 | Reinforces the 独生子 Critical note (one-child-policy collision, per 08_core_glossary.md item 37) with the deeper OT background of costly, willing paternal giving. |
| The Suffering Servant | Isaiah 52:13-53:12 | Christ “lifted up” (52:13 LXX ὑψωθήσεται, the same verb family as John’s ὑψόω) through suffering to glory; the crowd’s unbelief interpreted through Isaiah 53:1 | John 3:14; 8:28; 12:32,34,38 | High — the LXX Isaiah 52:13 and John’s ὑψόω share the same verb root; this is a deliberate Johannine echo worth surfacing in teaching even though the Mandarin renderings (举起来 for John; CUV’s rendering of Isaiah 52:13) do not share a visible lexical link. |
Part D — Parallels to Romans (Cross-Curriculum Consistency Map)
| Theme | John Passage(s) | Romans Passage(s) | Shared Mandarin Term(s) | Consistency Requirement |
|---|
| Deity/Sonship of Christ | John 1:1,14; 5:18; 10:30; 20:28 | Romans 1:3-4; 9:5 | 神的儿子, 神, 主 | Reuse baseline terms exactly; both curricula share the same Critical doctrine risk designations (deity_of_christ, sonship_of_christ). |
| Faith and its object | John 1:12; 3:15-18,36; 20:31 | Romans 3:22-28; 4; 10:9-10 | 信 / 信心 | Object of faith (the Son) must be explicit in both curricula; John’s dominant verb form (信) and Romans’s dominant noun form (信心) are two forms of the same baseline term family — teach as continuous, not distinct doctrines. |
| Grace versus merit | John 1:14, 16-17 (“grace upon grace”; grace vs. Law) | Romans 3:24; 4:4-5; 5:15-21; 6:14; 11:5-6 | 恩典 | Reuse baseline 恩典 exactly; both curricula share the identical Critical forbidden-alternatives list (功德, 阴德, 造化). |
| Law and grace contrast | John 1:17 | Romans 6:14; 7:1-6; 10:4 | 律法 / 恩典 | Reuse baseline 律法 exactly; John’s single-verse contrast previews Romans’s extended argument — cross-reference in teaching material. |
| Resurrection | John 2:19-22; 11:25; ch. 20 | Romans 1:4; 6:4-5; 8:11 | 复活 | Reuse baseline 复活 exactly; both curricula share the identical Critical forbidden-alternatives list (轮回, 投胎, 还魂). |
| Righteousness / the Spirit’s conviction | John 16:8,10 | Romans 3:21-26; 4; 10:3-4 | 义 | Reuse baseline 义 exactly, with the same mandatory Confucian-virtue distinguishing note at every occurrence. |
| Sonship/adoption into God’s family | John 1:12-13; 11:52 | Romans 8:14-17, 23 | 神的儿女 (John) / 儿子的名分 (Romans) | Two related but non-identical phrases for the same doctrine; teaching must explicitly cross-reference John 1:12-13 forward to Romans 8, and back again from Romans 8 to John 3:3-8 (New Birth), as a single doctrinal arc. |
| Sanctification | John 10:36; 17:17,19 | Romans 6:19,22; 15:16 | 成圣 | Reuse baseline 成圣 exactly, including the mandatory Neo-Confucian self-cultivation distinguishing note; note John 10:36’s unique sense (the Father’s setting-apart of the Son) versus 17:17’s believer-directed sense — both distinct from Romans’s believer-directed sense, requiring careful sense-disambiguation across the two curricula. |
| Judgment and universal accountability | John 3:17-19; 5:24-29; 12:48; 16:8-11 | Romans 1:18-3:20; 2:1-16 | 审判 | Reuse baseline 审判-adjacent vocabulary; both curricula must distinguish God’s personal judgment from the Chinese folk underworld-tribunal system (十殿阎罗/阎王) and from impersonal 报应. |
| Universal scope of salvation (“world”/“no distinction”) | John 1:29; 3:16-17; 4:42; 12:32 | Romans 1:16; 3:22-23; 10:12-13 | 世人/世界 (John) / (no direct baseline equivalent; new John term) | John’s 世人/世界 dual-valence term parallels Romans’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine (High risk in both); teach together to reinforce the shared “no ethnic or civilizational barrier” claim, resisting the Hua-Yi insider/outsider collision flagged in both curricula. |
| The Holy Spirit’s personal, relational agency | John 14:16-26; 15:26; 16:7-15 | Romans 8:9-16, 26-27 | 圣灵 | Reuse baseline 圣灵 exactly; John’s 保惠师 (Paraclete) is a curriculum-specific extension, not a baseline term, but must never contradict the baseline’s insistence on the Spirit’s full, personal divinity. |
| Confession of Christ’s Lordship as the salvation-defining act | John 20:28 (“My Lord and my God”) | Romans 10:9-10 (“Jesus is Lord”) | 主 | Both are cross-document consistency-locked confessions per baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md; John 20:28 should receive the same fixed-rendering treatment as Romans 10:9. |
| Isaiah 53:1 (shared verbatim OT quotation) | John 12:38 | Romans 10:16 | (Isaiah 53:1, CUV) | Direct textual overlap — see Part E rule 1 below; both quotations must be rendered with the identical Mandarin CUV wording. |
Part E — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Isaiah 53:1 (John 12:38 / Romans 10:16). Both curricula quote this verse verbatim from the Suffering Servant song. The Mandarin rendering MUST be identical in both curricula’s teaching materials: use the CUV wording exactly, “主啊,我们所传的有谁信呢?” and do not produce an independently retranslated variant for either curriculum.
- Recurring Psalm citations across the Passion narrative (Psalm 69:9 at John 2:17; Psalm 69:4/35:19 at John 15:25; Psalm 69:21 at John 19:28-29; Psalm 41:9 at John 13:18; Psalm 22:18 at John 19:24). Where the same Psalm is cited more than once within John, use one single fixed CUV rendering per verse throughout all John curriculum materials, and flag for teachers that Psalm 22 and Psalm 69 together form the backbone of the crucifixion’s fulfillment-of-prophecy argument.
- Passover-lamb typology quotations (Exodus 12:46 / Numbers 9:12 / Psalm 34:20 at John 19:36; the Lamb of God title at John 1:29,36). Render with a single consistent CUV wording and ensure both occurrences point back to the same typological chain rather than being treated as unrelated cross-references.
- Any OT quotation appearing in both the John and Romans curricula (Isaiah 53:1 currently identified; monitor for additional overlaps as further NT curricula are added, e.g. Isaiah 6:9-10 quoted in Acts 28:26-27 and echoed differently in Romans 11:8’s Isaiah 29:10/Deuteronomy 29:4 composite — NOT the same text as John 12:40’s Isaiah 6:10 quotation, and must NOT be conflated with it despite the shared “hardened hearts” theme). Any newly discovered verbatim overlap between curricula must be written into both curricula’s translation memory with a single shared rendering before either curriculum’s Phase 2 processing proceeds, per the baseline’s cross-worker translation-memory reload rule in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
- Divine-name echoes (Exodus 3:14 at John 8:58; Isaiah 6:1 at John 12:41; Psalm 82:6 at John 10:34). Because Mandarin surface renderings do not make these echoes self-evident, every occurrence requires a mandatory translator/teaching note explaining the OT connection — this is a structural requirement, not merely a stylistic preference, given these texts’ Critical/High doctrine-risk status.
- Fulfillment-formula consistency. Wherever John’s narrator explicitly marks a quotation as fulfillment (“that the Scripture might be fulfilled,” “this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet…”), render the introductory formula consistently across all such occurrences (John 12:38; 13:18; 15:25; 17:12; 19:24,28,36; and, where applicable, 12:15). Recommend a single fixed Mandarin formula (per CUV: “这是要应验…的话”) applied uniformly.
- Book-name and citation format consistency. Apply the Mandarin OT book-name mapping table established above uniformly across all John curriculum output documents, matching the baseline’s existing Romans book-name conventions and extending them for the additional OT books this Gospel cites.
Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage
All 21 chapters of the Gospel of John have been reviewed for OT quotations, allusions, messianic references, and typological correspondences. Chapters 9, 14, 16, 17, 18 (partial), and 21 contain no direct verbatim OT quotation; each is noted explicitly above as reviewed, with any relevant background allusion or typological continuity (e.g., ch. 21’s continuation of the Ezekiel 34 shepherd typology from ch. 10; ch. 17’s Day-of-Atonement typological background) recorded rather than silently omitted.
